Revolutionary War Hero’s Gold Medal

Goes On Display

A gold medal celebrating the Revolutionary War victory by Brigadier General Daniel Morgan over British Army forces in the

one-of-a-kind gold medal was among the items stolen in a burglary at the Pittsburgh Farmers and Mechanics Bank 1818. It was never recovered.

Morgan’s grandson, Morgan Lafayette Neville, was an executive of the bank. In 1819, he began efforts to get a replacement medal, including writing to former President Thomas Jefferson, who carried the original medal with him when he returned from Paris in 1789 to become the first U.S. Secretary of State.

Eventually, in July 1836, Congress approved “An Act to renew the gold medal struck and presented to General Morgan, by order of Congress, in honor of the battle of Cowpens.” But the grandson died three years later in March 1839 before the medal was created.

has been privately owned by others, including the family of banker, financier, and philanthropist John Pierpont Morgan Jr.

Known as the Comitia Americana (Latin for American Congress) series, Congress authorized only seven gold medals for heroes of the American Revolution. However, apparently only six were actually made for individual recipients, and the Morgan medal is the only one now privately owned.

The six who received medals were Gen. George Washington, Gen. Horatio Gates, Gen. Anthony Wayne, Gen. Nathanael Greene, Capt. John Paul Jones (whose original medal has not been seen since his death in 1792 and may have been melted), and Gen. Daniel Morgan. A medal authorized for Gen. Henry Lee

Potter & Potter Auctions held a signature early summer Books and Manuscripts sale on June 1. It featured 510 lots and had a 97-percent sell-through rate. All prices noted include the company’s 20-percent premium. This auction featured fine selections of groundbreaking first-edition publications.

Charles Dickens’ (1812-70) “Great Expectations” was estimated at $8,000-$12,000 and sold for $24,000. This first-edition, first issue copy was printed in London by C. Whiting for Chapman and Hall in 1861. Howard Phillips Lovecraft’s (18901937) “The Outsider and Others” was estimated at $4,000-$6,000 and made $11,400. This first-edition of

1781 Battle of Cowpens in South Carolina is making its first appearance since it sold at auction for $960,000 in April 2022. It apparently also is the first time it is available for general public viewing since its creation in 1839.

The winning bidder in the Stack’s Bowers auction was Brian Hendelson, president of Classic Coin Company in Bridgewater, N.J., who has loaned the historic medal and its original red leather and purple velvet presentation case to the Museum of the American Revolution in Philadelphia. It is a featured part of the exhibit titled “At War With a South Carolina Regiment, 17791782” that is currently on display at the museum through 2023.

“I’ve collected early Americana for many years, including historical treasures from the Revolutionary War period. Adding the Daniel Morgan at Cowpens gold medal to my collection certainly is a tremendous honor. It commemorates an important

years hidden away with previous owners, I’m delighted to loan this national treasure to the museum so it now can be seen and appreciated by many people,” he explained.

Morgan led his Continental troops in a decisive victory over British Lieutenant Colonel Banastre Tarleton on Jan. 17, 1781, at what is now the Cowpens National Battlefield in Gaffney, S.C. The museum’s description of the battle states: “The Battle of Cowpens turned the tide of the war in the South. While British forces still held the coastal cities of Charleston and Savannah, the Revolutionaries gradually reclaimed control of the countryside.”

In March 1781, Congress authorized the creation of a large gold medal to honor Morgan. Struck in Paris by the French engraver Augustin Dupre, it measured 56 millimeters in diameter and weighed 4.8 troy ounces.

Morgan received the medal in 1790. He died in 1802, and his

Finally, in December 1839, based on the design from Paris used to create the stolen and missing medal, the Philadelphia Mint struck a single Morgan at Cowpens medal weighing 4.79 ounces of fine gold. It was subsequently presented in 1841 to Morgan’s great-grandson, Morgan Lafayette Neville Jr., and it remained in the family until 1914. Since then, it

Morphy’s Toys And General Collectibles Auction

Merges Antique And Vintage Classics

Pop-Culture Categories Also To Be Featured In Big Aug. 2 And 3 Auction

Morphy’s spring toy auction, which took in $3.1 million, made headlines worldwide with its phenomenal single-owner collection of factory-boxed “Star Wars” figures and a sports card selection that included an $873,300 Topps baseball wax-pack brick. No other event in Morphy’s 20-year history could top that one for the amount of social media buzz or the number of pre-sale inquiries from prospective bidders. The fun will resume

on Wednesday and Thursday, Aug. 2 and 3, when Morphy’s presents its summer offering of Toys and General Collectibles featuring both classic toys and pop-culture favorites: vintage sports cards, comic books and early video games.

“We wanted to offer variety in this sale, something to please everyone, and to include collectibles categories that are in high demand and still growing,” said Tommy Sage, head of

vintage sports cards, rack packs, wax packs and boxes; and cello packs and boxes represent some of the alltime greatest professional baseball, football, basketball and hockey players and teams. An unopened BBCEauthenticated Topps NHL Hockey wax box from 1971 contains 24 packs of 10 cards each. There is a good possibility that the cards might include gem-mint examples of Ken Dryden’s rookie card or cards for Hall of Famers like Bobby Orr, Gordie Howe or Bobby Hull.

Another exciting prospect is the unopened 1956 Topps Baseball 1-Cent wax pack, PSA

that potentially includes cards for Mickey Mantle, Willie Mays, Sandy Koufax, Duke Snider, Hank Aaron and other legends of the sport. Only one other pack of its type has ever received a higher PSA grade than Morphy’s example.

Additionally, there are television and film-related wax boxes, including a 1975

appears to be all original, and has a working coin mechanism. Robot and space toy collectors, as well as vending machine aficionados, all know how rare this machine is.

The 1956 Topps Baseball one-cent wax pack, PSA authenticated and graded 8, unopened, potentially includes

Topps “Planet of the Apes,” 1978 “Battlestar Galactica,” and 1980 Topps “Creature Feature.” Each of the three boxes has been BBCE-graded, contains 36 packs and is estimated at $500-$1,000. A 1985 Topps “Masters of the Universe” 36-pack wax box carries a $750-$1,500 estimate.

Comic book fans might find some unexpected treasures in this sale, like Marvel Comics’ “Amazing Spider-Man #194,” published in 1979. CGCgraded 9.8, this book presents beautifully and is estimated at $3,000-$6,000.

From the world of sci-fi comes a scarce 1950s gumball-dispensing robot. Made in Italy, this coveted toy stands 55.5 inches tall,

Another fantastic design is the early replica of Gort, the robot from the 1951 film “The Day the Earth Stood Still.” A towering figure at approximately 8 feet tall, the Gort consigned to Morphy’s was purchased in 1996 from Fred Barton Productions, the firm that also made the “laser-eyed” Gort seen in the film. Sage, mentioned the auction example, came from the estate of a Pennsylvania collector.

“It was the most highly prized piece in his collection. Because he had kept the original sales receipt, we were able to locate the manufacturer in Los Angeles. I was pleased to be able to speak with Fred Barton, himself, who told me the Gort in our auction is one of the earliest ones he made, and that there are only a few of them like it,” stated Sage. The receipt will accompanythe Gort figure when it joins its new owner. The estimate is $6,000$12,000.

Nearly 100 lots of dolls,

dollhouses and furniture, and stuffed animals have been cataloged. The antique dolls are led by a near-mint 28inch Jumeau Triste or “Longface Jumeau” with a pressed bisque head. Its body is original and stamped “JUMEAU MEDAILLE D’OR PARIS.” The star of the vintage doll section is a sought-after 1959 first-issue brunette #1 “Barbie” with its original box, stand and complete set of accessories.

Hundreds of tin, pressedsteel, and cast-iron vehicles will cross the auction including American, European and German productions. Morphy’s is the place to go for all-original cast-iron mechanical banks, like the J & E Stevens “Two Frogs” bank to be offered on day one. A stunning specimen in nearmint-plus condition, it’s in fine working order and ready to “leap” to its next destination. A special treat for Marklin 1 gauge train collectors is the rare ca. 1906 handpainted clockwork swing bridge. Measuring 23 inches long, it appears to be all original, has two of its four original lamps, and is in working order. Currently assessed as VG-Excellent, it could achieve a higher grade with a proper cleaning, according to Sage.

Over 220 antique and vintage marbles will be in the

Superman Dies At Auction

same auction, a copy of Action Comics #1 graded 3.0 by CGC sold for $1,638,759.20. Both of these prices include a 15-percent buyer’s premium. It is easy to see that the most recent sale prices of these books represent a $965,990.80 loss on the Superman #1 and a $138,759.20 loss on the Action Comics #1. It’s not surprising no grading company or auction house touted the full disclosure of these sales figures.

On June 14, Goldin

Auctions sold two prominent golden age key comic books. The first was a copy of Superman #1 graded by CGC in 7.0 condition. The second was a copy of Action Comics #1 graded by CGC in 3.0 condition. Both books are very scarce and desirable and feature either the first appearance of Superman or his origin, depending on which book the buyer chooses. The Superman #1 sold for $1,620,000, and the Action Comics #1 sold for $1,500,000. Both sale prices quoted include a buyer’s premium of 20 percent. On the surface, it seems like this was a successful sale and that the vintage comic book market is robust and healthy. Unfortunately, the antiques and collectibles trade is not always a transparent market and, as such, when we look below the surface, the truth becomes apparent. And what is that truth? Back in 2021, both of these comics sold for a lot more money. In fact, these two sales show just how drastically the vintage comic book market has changed in the past two years.

In 2021, a copy of Superman #1 graded by CGC in 7.0 sold for $2,604,750 courtesy of Comic Connect. In that

To be fair, almost all pop culture collectibles are falling in price right now, compared to collectibles soaring during the pandemic. Unfortunately, when the pandemic ended and the age of what many in the field called “easy money” came to an end, prices for the vast majority of pop culture collectibles started to fall. Today, with interest rates higher, the collectibles marketplace is not immune. That said, some people in the vintage comic book community continue to dismiss these sales for reasons I would like to respond to.

The first criticism levied against these sales is that the consignor chose Goldin Auctions. Critics are somewhat correct in their analysis that Goldin Auctions is not known for their comic book sales as of yet. While it is true they are one of the top tier auction houses that cater to the sports memorabilia market, I can assure you that the final sale prices of these two books has very little to do with the auction house chosen and more to do with the overall state of the collectibles market at present time. Collectibles on every level are extremely volatile at present time, so these books could either rebound in price or fall further in subsequent sales. No one has a crystal ball, and anyone telling you to ignore these

sales because the results do not fit their rose-colored outlook of how high-end collectibles are supposed to perform should be ignored.

The second criticism levied against these sales is that we have to take into account the state of the overall economy. Again, anyone can see the overall post pandemic economy is different from what was occurring back in 2021. That said, certain markets on the antiques side of the trade are still going strong. Just look at the prices for higher end pieces of rare coins and currency. Those markets have not experienced the massive declines that pop culture collectible markets have overall.

That is not to say there isn’t a downturn in some of those markets, but not to the extent of pop culture markets in which certain collecting fields like graded video games are down over 60 percent on average at present time.

Pop culture collectors need to start to realize there are no guarantees in the antiques and collectibles trade. This should not imply that these comics, along with the overall vintage comic book market, cannot rebound. However, it could take years for that to happen, and deciding when and where to sell your cherished collectibles matters almost as much as how much you pay for them to

begin with. Most high-profile investors I know who operate in the antiques and collectibles trade are not selling pop culture collectibles at present time, and quite a few are not buying right now. There is a massive amount of risk in these markets. Due to the speculative nature of the antiques and collectibles trade, caution is advised. That said, don’t worry about Superman, as he isn’t going away anytime soon. I can assure you that the corporation who owns Superman and the rest of the D.C. Comics universe has no plans on letting that happen.

“The sale was truly remarkable all around. We more than doubled our low estimate, selling 97 percent of the 508 lots, which far surpassed the average that week of global sales. We already have our sights set on August when we bring to market the collection of Robin and Kathryn Smiley of Firsts

Magazine. After that is the important Chet Ross collection of Nobu Shirase and the Japanese Antarctic Expedition, most of which has never been offered on the market and is near impossible to find in the wild. We close out the year with the ‘Alice in Wonderland’ collection of Stephen J. and Nancey Farber, featuring choice offerings of presentation copies and rare first editions,” according to Christopher Brink, Potter & Potter Auctions’ director of Fine Books and Manuscripts. Wurlitzer Model 71 Tabletop

Two-Day Auction Included Toys, Advertising, Coin-Ops, Petroliana

A Wurlitzer Model 71 tabletop jukebox on a stand, made in America, ca. 1940-41, sold for $14,750 on day two of two days of online-only auctions held June 9 and 10 by Miller & Miller Auctions Ltd. The first sale was dedicated entirely to toys, and the second featured petroliana, advertising and coin-ops. All prices quoted include an 18percent buyer’s premium and are in Canadian dollars.

Headlining the auction was a pair of important collections, both offered in the second session. One was the Linden Johnson collection, featuring a treasure trove of petroliana and general store advertising. The other was the Dr. Don Gutoski collection, which included a fine assortment of Kuntz Brewery advertising, rare Wurlitzer jukeboxes and

speakers and assorted coin-ops.

“This sale was proof that the rule of investment collecting persists, condition is the foremost predictor of price,” according to Ethan Miller of Miller & Miller Auctions Ltd. “While mature market segments such as pre-1950 breweriana and toys fell somewhat beneath expectations, midcentury soda signs, particularly vertical signs and push bars, were on fire. Attendees hoping to build their advertising collections at yesterday’s prices took a walk down the boulevard of broken dreams.”

The Wurlitzer Model 71 tabletop jukebox on a stand was the overall top lot of both days. It was a mechanically functioning and nicely restored example with original toned catalin inserts and a refinished case and trim. It sat on a rare, restored original Wurlitzer model 810 stand. The wood base was painted with designs that simulated mixed wood inlays.

The top two lots of the toys category were a Marx Indian motorcycle with sidecar, made in America, 1940, 6.25 inches long, boasting original lithographed tin ($2,950), and a Canadian 1950s Lincoln TransCanada Air Lines pressed tin model airplane with four propellers, rubber landing gear and nice T.C.A. decals, 9.25 inches long ($2,950).

The June 9 toys auction, 272 lots, grossed $141,541 and attracted 230 registered users who combined for 4,439 bids. The June 10 petroliana, advertising and coin-ops auction, 377 lots, grossed $531,531; 429 bidders placed 8,852 bids. Online bidding was via LiveAuctioneers.com and MillerandMillerAuctions.com.

A Kuntz Park Brewery Waterloo factory scene beer tray (Canadian. 1900), lithographed tin, with vibrant colors and a rare factory scene (L. Kuntz Park Brewery, Waterloo, Ontario) brought $12,980, while an 1890s Kuntz Park Brewery lithographed tin Lager sign with factory scene, embossed lettering and design, also from Waterloo, Ontario, realized $12,980.

A Globe Amusement Lighthouse grip strength tester (American, 1924), featuring lights and a horn that sounded when the player reached the top level of the game, 84 inches tall, knocked down for $12,980. Also, a Caille Brothers five-cent Olympia Puncher strength tester (American, 1910s), cast iron with nickel plated trim and a painted top sign, designed as either a “puncher” or a “hugger” after inserting a coin, went for $8,850.

A monumental, singlesided porcelain building sign (“Drink Coca-Cola, Delicious and Refreshing”), made in Canada in 1935, 4-by-8 feet, the scarcer, earlier version of the iconic sign of the same size, reached $9,440. Also, a Frontenac Brewery “Buccaneer” porcelain corner sign (Quebec, 1900s), made to be mounted to a corner of a building, showing excellent gloss, found a new home for $10,030.

treasures from old collections, to include toys from the 1920s to the 1950s; early tin windups from Germany and France; tin windup character toys from America; hard-to-find Canadian tin, pressed steel and cast-iron toys; and Japanese friction and battery-op toys. Toy makers included Lehmann, Hess, Bing, Doll, Fernand Martin, Carette, Meccano, Bandai, Yonezawa, Schuco, Lincoln, and Marx.

The session’s expected top lot was a 1920 American preWWI style Samuel Orkin U.S.S. New Mexico toy battleship, the largest one made, a survivor made from pressed steel and wood, 25.25 inches long, in a glass display case ($2,124). But besting that lot was a German WWI Marklin U-Boat Submarine with pressed tin plate, 15.5 inches long and featuring adjustable diving planes ($2,242). Both toys were tested and were working.

still bank, possibly English, ca. 1880-1900, 13 inches tall, maker unknown, the church half octagon shaped with a tile roof, went to a determined bidder for $2,655. Also, a German pre-WWI-era Fleischmann pressed tinplate toy battleship, reading “GERMANY” on the stern, 16.5 inches long, with replaced key, lifeboat and flags, but otherwise excellent, hit $2,124.

A Canadian 1950 pressed steel Lincoln Auto Transporter, 25 inches long, with a nice set of cars (two of them original) with knobby tires, plus a Lincoln Auto Transporter decal, graded 8 out of 10 for condition, achieved $2,006. Also, a Roullet and Decamps pouncing white tiger, (French, ca. 188090), with a material-covered tin body and a key-wind mechanism that causes him to turn his head, slowly crouch and pounce, brought $2,006.
