While recently scouring the fields for any good pottery or other treasures at the Spring edition of the antique shows in Brimfield, Mass., I came across an intriguing 19th century salt-glazed stoneware figure of a reclining lion that measures over 12 inches in length. The dealer told me that it was recently discovered in an old estate in New Hampshire.

My initial reaction when picking the lion up was that it reminded me of some pottery examples attributed to the Thomas Haig Pottery and John Fritz in Philadelphia, however, a little different. But, I suspected that it was at least an American-made object, possibly from Pennsylvania or Ohio, although I would not rule out New York as an origin either.

Red earthenware and

stoneware examples made at the Haig Pottery are displayed today at the Philadelphia Museum of Art and the Wadsworth Atheneum Museum of Art in Hartford, Conn. Furthermore, I also found a red earthenware lion that is most likely from the Haig Pottery this past winter near Portland, Maine. The career of John Fritz as a potter in Philadelphia and elsewhere in America is less-known today.

According to the Amana Colonies Visitors Bureau in Iowa, “The Amana Colonies are a group of settlements of German Pietists, compromising seven villages. Calling themselves the Ebenezer Society of the Community of True Inspiration, die Gemeinde der wahren Inspiration, they first settled in New York State near Buffalo in what is now the town of West Seneca. However, in order to live

out their beliefs in more isolated surroundings they moved west to the rich soil of east-central Iowa (near present-day Iowa City) in 1855.

They lived a communal life until the mid-1930s.

The Historic Reinholds Station Trinity Chapel Annual Summer Arts Festival will take place Saturday, Aug. 5, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. This small event is held at the West Cocalico Township Building, which also serves as the Reinholds Fire Company’s Banquet Hall, located at 156 W. Main St. (Route 897), in the village of Reinholds, Pa.

Local artisans who will be showcasing their work for sale include Doug and Susan Shaw (wood carvings), Ned Foltz (redware pottery), Ginny Good (beewax), Barbara Strawser (folk art paintings), Mike and Donna Brown (paper mache and chalkware), Janice Sonnen (hooked and penny rugs), Cynthia Baker (weaving), Helen Reinhold-Gordon (oil paintings), Frances Foltz (paper cutting), Randy Meckley (broom making), Janet Fasnacht (fiber angora art), Steve Good (metal works), Barry Bennecoff (furniture and accessories), and Lorah’s Handmade Candy.

There will also be regional folk art for sale from artists such as John Long, Walter and June Gottshall, Lester Breininger, James and Verna Seagreaves, Luke and Fannie Gottshall, and Mildred Keyser.

A food stand will be on-site, and there will also be a bake sale. Items donated from exhibitors will be raffled off at 2 p.m. Ticket buyers do not need to be present to win. For further information, call 717-336-6846.

Passionate. That one word and ten letters is the best way to describe and summarize those who attend and/or participate in the world’s largest all-Ford-themed car show: the Carlisle Ford Nationals. The 2023 offering presented by eBay Motors (June 2, 3, 4) became the second-largest Ford Nationals ever and did so in more than one way. The all-time showfield mark was set in 2022, but this year’s total of 3,434 show cars, combined with a stellar vendor and spectator turnout, means that since 2014, this

was the largest gathering of Ford lovers at the Carlisle Fairgrounds.

Now, why did all these blue oval lovers migrate to Carlisle, Pa.? Where does one begin? Maybe it was the two-dozen new product walkarounds from industry experts being introduced two and sometimes three times an hour, or the half a dozen or so new vehicle unveilings. It could have also been the special guests, unique displays, competitions, parades, and, of course, parts shopping within the

Magic Auction Conjures Up $425,000

Extravaganza Of Vintage And Modern Magic Apparatus And Advertising Sold

Potter & Potter Auctions is pleased to announce the results of its sale held on June 17 offering 568 lots and realizing a 99 percent sellthrough rate with total gross of $425,000. All prices noted include the company’s 20percent buyer’s premium.

Posters promoting legacy performers of yesteryear took several of the top lot slots in this signature sale. Lot #12 traded hands at $45,600. This three-sheet, linen-backed poster of Harry Houdini with folded arms was printed by The Strobridge Litho. Co. in 1911. Its image was dubbed “Houdini for President” thanks to similarities in its design to political advertising of the era. “Ehrenerklärung! Im Namen des Königs Wilhelm, II. Kaiser v. Deuschland (Declaration Of Honor! In The Name Of King Wilhelm, II. Kaiser V. Germany)” made $36,000. This linen-backed poster was printed in Leipzig around 1902 by Atelier J. Zier. It pictured Houdini in handcuffs

standing before a tribunal of judges, as helmet-clad police looked on. The poster “Thurston. Do the Spirits Come Back?” realized $5,280. This oversized, three-sheet stone lithographed poster was printed in Cleveland by The Otis Lithograph Co. around 1928. It pictured the illusionist conjuring spirits and demons from a skull clutched in his hands.

Pre-war apparatus made by legacy manufacturers was another premier category in this magicana auction. A checker cabinet was estimated at $4,000-$8,000 and scored $22,800. It was made in New York by Okito (Tobias Bamberg, 1875-1963) around 1922. It was detailed with painting and decals, a flared foot design, and a b rass maker’s plate.

A ringing alarm clock production stand, estimated at $1,000-$2,000, realized $13,200. It was made in New Haven, Ct., in 1939 by Petrie & Lewis. With this trick, six alarm clocks were produced from an

Collector Chats With Peter S. Seibert

This Week: Are We Really Becoming The Jetsons?

Do you remember the Jetsons, whose super modern world was seen in the 1960s and 1970s as the harbinger of what we would be like in the

2020s? No books, but everyone reads from a computer screen. No old things, just modern furnishings that were built into your house. Robots were there to accomplish all the domestic tasks. It was a utopian world where, in theory, one was free for the nobler pursuits because life’s chores were taken care of. Except, of course, that this would not have been very good television. The Jetsons were the postmodern version of America and a response to both the Flintstones in their prehistoric world and the Honeymooners.

The sense over the last decade has been that antiques are anathema to the modern world and in particular to Gen Z and Millennials. Experiences are held highly over material things as to where you spend your money. These new generations were predicted to be the death of collecting. And yet, I don’t believe it. As much as paid pundits have pontificated about how grandmother’s china needs to be thrown out as valueless and lacking interest, I would argue that the opposite is true.

This past Sunday my eldest daughter wanted to go over to South Street in Philadelphia to do some shopping. I tagged along as the bearer of the overused credit card. The stores that she and hundreds of others her age were going into specialized in vintage fashions from the 1950s onward. And from those vintage fashion stores, we walked to others that sold vinyl records. And from those record shops, we went next to nostalgia shops selling everything from lava lamps to Mexican pottery.

Now for the collectors of Chippendale and Old Paris, I hear you. This is not collecting early antiques, but, it is still about collecting. It is the pursuit of a hidden treasure, to find a unique item that you can share with others, or maybe even to purchase an item that has a low carbon footprint (since it is now 100 years old). The death of collecting for 20- to 30-year-olds was not apparent on South

Street. It was alive and well and fitted out in balloon pants, Roy Orbison records and waterfall dressers.

So I am being a wee bit melodramatic with this column, but I do think it’s important that we separate out reality from hyperbole. The other week I was in a group shop in Lambertville, N.J., and heard a dealer loudly proclaiming that all young people hate antiques and that they would not know quality if they saw it. They only wanted IKEA and things they could put in a backpack. Not hardly is what I would say to that. They know what they like and can afford, and perhaps that is not what

The Importance Of Historic Barn Preservation

Have you been to barn/yard sales looking for antiques? Do you remember onsite auctions with an old barn full of treasures? Do you shop in a barn that’s been converted into an antique store? Did you ever consider that the most valuable antique you’ve seen is the barn itself?

The value of a barn does not just rest in its monetary worth. These structures hold historical information of an inestimable amount. When historians want

to learn about a location, they often search out old barns for answers.

This country’s agrarian past held barns in high regard. The barn was often the first building built by our farmer forefathers when they settled on their land. It housed their most valuable assets, the livestock and food that sustained their family. Once they secured those items, they could move on to constructing shelter for their loved ones.

A barn can reveal so much about those settlers. The size and style of the barn lets us know how it was used. Did it support a family’s needs or a commercial enterprise? How that building’s owner contributed to the larger community is brought to light.

The methods of construction give clues to the owner’s

country of origin as they varied from place to place. A barn built by an Englishman is constructed differently than one built by a German immigrant. Joinery and roof lines are just two examples of hints to the owner’s ancestry. This helps disclose the traditions and culture of those that settled there. It sets the tone for what life was like in that town hundreds of years ago.

The materials used to build the barn expose what was growing in the area during the time it

was built. Farmers used the wood from the trees felled when clearing the land as building material for the rafters and walls. Historical horticulturalists and entomologists learn what species of trees, insects or botanical diseases were thriving when the farm was settled.

Sadly, many of the historical barns built by our forefathers are disappearing from the landscape and along with them valuable information about our country’s past. Urban sprawl and development are the cause of

many barns being torn down. The cost of maintaining older barns often leads to neglect, so time and weather take their toll. New farming practices can make them obsolete so, even on active agricultural sites, they may disappear from neglect and ignorance.

Fortunately, some do find ways to repurpose these structures into antique stores, wedding venues and even wineries. These are the lucky barns that live on and continue to share their robust stories of the past.

Old barns hold many secrets, and if one observes

carefully, much can be learned from these agricultural cathedrals. The next time you find yourself in an historic barn, look up at the rafters, examine the details and see what you can uncover. Make a pact to save an old barn when you have the opportunity to voice your opinion or offer help.

Painted china plates made their first documented appearance in 9th century China (hence the name) and eventually became a desirable European trade item. By the 18th century, Europeans had learned the secret of creating porcelain and began turning out their own decorated china plates, many of which had the look of oil paintings. During the reign of Queen Victoria, plate painting became a “parlor craft” for ladies of the upper classes.

However, during the heyday of the painted plate (18801920), manufacturers, both in

To learn all about “Birds of the World?” To relive scenes from “The Sound of Music”? Modern collectible china plates cover themes like these, and lots more. If you like them and want to assemble a collection, great! However, if they’re part of the “stuff” you’re trying to get rid of, options are limited. It is too bad, because collectible china

the United States and abroad, employed a multitude of less financially fortunate, yet remarkably skilled women to paint plates. artists moved from freehand painting to stencils, speeding up production and ensuring uniformity of design. Later developments, such as transfer printing, screen printing, and lithography, made mass production possible but eventually replaced individual paintwork. Intended for display, plate diameters ranged from 8 to 10 inches.

Nature-themed plates from the early 20th century fare better, as do plates which appeal to specific interest groups (there always seems to be a “Star Wars” fan in need of another “Star Wars” collectible). Even these, however, rarely top $100.

“What should I do with these?”
That’s the question I’m often asked by folks who’ve inherited a “collection of collections.” Sometimes it’s phrased less delicately: “How the heck do I get rid of this stuff?” I generally respond with my own question: “Do you like it?” Many times, the answer is “no.”
Usually, the “stuff” they’re talking about falls into the category of “intentional collectibles.” These were items created with just one purpose

Colonies is that for 80 years they maintained an almost completely self-sufficient local economy, importing very little from the wider, industrializing U.S. economy. The Amanians were able to achieve this independence and lifestyle by adhering to the specialized handcrafts and farming occupations which they had brought with them from Germany.”

Additionally, it is published in Mark C. Wiseman’s book, “A History of the Des Moines Potteries, with Additional Information on Boonesboro, Carlisle, Hartford, and Palmyra,” “The potters (at the Ebenezer Society in upstate New York near Buffalo) made dinnerware and cookware for the community kitchens as well as containers for daily tasks. Pottery was produced in the shop until 1855 when the society moved to its present location in Amana, Iowa. No pottery shop opened at the Amana location because all men were needed to help build the new community.”

New dinner ware or containers that were needed in Amana would be purchased from the outside. Both bone china and stoneware pottery

was available through the general stores in each village.

Elizabeth Reitman Zuber, granddaughter of John Fritz, recalls: “John Fritz was my grandfather who married a daughter of Martin Shoup. He was Swiss; he originally was a silk weaver and then learned pottery as an apprentice with a master. He came over to the United States on a ship that took 45 days to cross the water. He lived in New York, where he learned of the Ebenezer Society and decided to join.

“In Ebenezer, he had a pottery shop. Children would come into the shop and get scraps of clay and pottery. A young lady by the name of Dina Shoup was told by Opa (Grandpa), You like nice dishes, I’ll make you a pitcher. He made pitchers, tea pots, crocks, milk pots and flower pots, as well as other items.

“He came to Amana in 1855 and was a builder of houses for a number of years. He was also associated with clay in the making of clay bricks. At the age of 60, Chrisian Metz (the community leader) again asked Opa to be a pottery maker. He was living in Middle Amana. He had a pottery wheel, I think in the washhouse, where he made pottery. The local clay was not to good for pottery as it seemed to warp a great deal. However, it

worked well for the making of flower pots. He made many of them. The clay came out of the backyard where he lived. I think he had an oven at this home that was heated by wood. He may have fired some of the pottery in the clay brick kilns.”

Interestingly, there is also a John Fritz documented as a potter in Philadelphia in the late 19th century, whereas this may be the same Fritz. For instance, one of Fritz’s business cards recently surfaced that indicates he operated a “Fancy Terra Cotta Works, No. 836 St. John

Contradictory to this address, though, some rustic stoneware mugs that were made by John Fritz or at a business he owned in the late 1800s reveal a different address, inscribed on the base, “John Fritz / 5th R. Somerset St. / Phil.”

However, there are also some similarities found in the rustic stoneware mugs that were signed by Fritz and others that were made at Jacob C. Cassell’s Fair-Hill Terra Cotta Works in Philadelphia about

1880, which was located at 2341 N. Seventh St. For example, my nephew, Jason, and I found a complete set that consisted of four mugs and a pitcher a few years back in southeastern Pennsylvania. But it is unclear if they were made by Fritz or at Cassell’s company, but they do closely resemble each other’s production. This type of mug and pitcher set was also produced by Richard C. Remmey in Philadelphia, the Wingender Pottery in Haddonfield, N.J., and possibly other American potters about the same period.

Jon Martin’s (1882-1968) butterfly silk production was estimated at $2,000$4,000 and sold for $9,000. It was made in England in 1933. This illusion consisted of a lazy tong-like metal frame with a sequined accented, hand-sewn butterfly. It was originally conceived by Karl Germain. Lot #86 was a goodnight candle trick, estimated at $100$200 and selling for $1,140. It was produced in London by Harry Leat around 1940. In performance, the candle was lit when the performer left the stage. It then burst open, revealing a banner reading “Good Night” and then spun around to reveal another banner reading “Thank You.”

“Chung Ling Soo Mysteries. A Rare Bit of Old China” made $5,040. This color poster pictured Soo standing on a jade demon platform on stage, with the “Mysteries” overprint of “Li Sing Foo.” It was published in London in 1915 by J. Weiner Ltd.

Mid-century apparatus was also well represented at this event. Lot #113 was a top hat and cane connected to a table. Estimated at $200-$400, it sold for $1,920. Produced in London by Yimka in the 1950s, here, a wood and metal cane was spun, revealing three legs. It was set onto the stage and a silk collapsible top hat was placed on top to form a

table. This finely curated auction came full circle with newer to modern tricks and illusions. A Ouija prediction watch was estimated at $3,000-$6,000 and climbed to $21,600. It was made in Arizona by Richard Gerlitz around 2010. This mechanically complex timepiece allowed the performer to pre-program the watch so the hand would spell out words or reveal information chosen by a spectator apparently at random. A Knife-Er illusion was estimated at $200-$300 and made $7,200. It was made by Abbott’s Magic in the 1970s. In performance, a gruesome-looking knife was thrown at a young lady standing in front of a target.

The knife passed through her body and lodged in the bulls-eye behind her.

“This sale proves that the interest in magic collecting continues to be strong, and in some cases, is stronger than ever before,” followed up Gabe Fajuri, president at Potter & Potter Auctions, after the sale.

Potter & Potter, founded in 2007, is a Chicago area auction house specializing in paper Americana, vintage advertising, rare books, playing cards, gambling memorabilia, posters, fine prints, vintage toys, and magicana - antiques and collectibles related to magic and magicians.

The Guggenheim Presents “Young Picasso In Paris”

Part Of The Picasso Celebration 1973–2023, Exhibition Features “Le Moulin de la Galette”

The Guggenheim Museum presents “Young Picasso in Paris,” an intimate exhibition comprising a total of 10 paintings and works on paper executed during Pablo Picasso’s introduction to the French capital. Created over the course of one pivotal year, these works explore a critical juncture in his artistic development, as Picasso encountered novel contemporary subjects and styles.

Picasso (b. 1881, Málaga, Spain; d. 1973, Mougins, France) arrived in Paris from Barcelona in autumn 1900, during the final weeks of the Exposition Universelle that included his 1898 painting “Last Moments in the Spanish Pavilion.” The ville lumière, or city of lights, captivated, and ultimately transformed, the 19-year-old Spaniard. He absorbed much of what Paris had to offer over his initial two-month stay and during his return the following May through the end of 1901.

making a final decision, you may really want to think it over. Those china plates may mean nothing to you. But they meant something to Grandma. And who knows? That “stuff” might, someday, mean something to your

art galleries, but also the bohemian cafés, raucous nightclubs, and sensational dance halls in the hilltop neighborhood of Montmartre.

Coinciding with the 50th anniversary of Picasso’s death, “Young Picasso in Paris” highlights a significant work, “Le Moulin de la Galette” (ca. Nov. 1900), from the Guggenheim collection. The famous dance hall, formerly a mill engaged in the production of a brown bread, or galette, had also been depicted by such avantgardists as Ramón Casas, Pierre-Auguste Renoir, Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec, and Vincent van Gogh. In his titillating version, Picasso rendered a vibrant cross section of Paris society mingling under the dance hall’s lights.

One of his first paintings executed in Paris, “Le Moulin de la Galette” was also recently the subject of an extensive conservation research and treatment project at the Guggenheim. Findings of

analytical work and imaging, conducted in collaboration with the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, and the National Gallery of Art, Washington, D.C., informed the removal of accumulated surface dirt and a nonoriginal, discolored varnish. The treatment unveiled previously obscured subtleties in Picasso’s painting, including the brushwork, colorful palette, and spatial definition. Furthermore, technical imaging revealed that at an earlier stage “Le Moulin de la Galette” included a lapdog seated on a chair in front of the table at the bottom left of the painting. As the final composition evolved, Picasso hastily covered the dog with strokes of brown paint, leaving the contour of its head evident and allowing hints of the underlying colors to show through. Picasso directed more attention toward the figures and the space by eliminating the canine. Nevertheless, he left visible clues of the compositional change, which would become a frequent practice for the artist.

The young Picasso was fascinated with unconventional aspects of modern life, finding

automotive flea market. The reality is, it was all of that, and more.

Day one included a special one-day-only visit by two-time Formula Drift Champion Vaughn Gittin Jr. Vaughn and his RTR Vehicles team came to showcase their new fleet of vehicles, meet fans, sign autographs, and have some drifting fun on the Carlisle track. In addition, another automotive giant, Steve Saleen, made Carlisle home for the weekend. Steve and his team showcased a handful of Saleen customized rides, including the S7 and an all-new SA-40 Mustang, including one that supports a charitable cause. Steve was also part of a special evening dinner and auction that benefited the Chip Miller Amyloidosis Foundation.

Further love of Ford branded products came from Kyle Sargent of Ford Performance Racing Parts as well as Gary Patterson and Tracey Smith from Shelby American. Sargent showcased a pair of 700+ HP F-150s, while the Shelby leadership not

only introduced but also reopened production of the Shelby Dragonsnake with its former driver Bruce Larson, while also pulling the covers off a pair of Centennial Edition trucks on the Carlisle stage. KTL Restorations also got in on the walk-around game, showcasing their award-winning 1970 Aruba Eliminator two different times as amazed showgoers looked on.

The wheels were in motion at Carlisle, not only from Gittin Jr. drift exhibitions, but from rides via Gateway Mustang, the Real Street Shootout (autocross), a rolling exhaust contest, rolling burnouts and donuts presented by Atturo Tires, on-grounds parades, monster truck rides from the Virginia Giant, and the Ford Downtown Parade, Park and Party.

As the final hours of the 2023 event concluded, awards were posted and presented to those who were available to receive them, while others celebrated the success of the weekend with late-day photos

The year 2023 marks the 50th anniversary of Pablo Picasso’s death and thus is devoted to the celebration of his work in France, Spain, and internationally. To celebrate Picasso’s legacy today is to question what this major work of Western modernity represents today; it is to show its living, accessible, and current part.

The Picasso Celebration 1973–2023 was initiated by the Musée national Picasso-Paris, the main lender of the event and its coordinator, and Bernard Ruiz-Picasso, grandson of the artist and president of the Fundación Almine y Bernard Ruiz-Picasso para el Arte (FABA) and the Museo Picasso Málaga. It is structured around some 50 exhibitions and events that will be held in renowned cultural institutions in Europe and North America and which, together, thanks to new interpretations and approaches, will make it possible to review the current state of studies and understanding of Picasso’s work.

The French and Spanish governments have decided to
