Rare Japanese Robots And Space Vehicles

Dominated Top 10 At Milestone’s $700K Spring Premier Toy Auction

Boxed “Gang Of Five” Target Robot, Jupiter Robot, Space Patrol Car, Walking Batman and Batman Jeep Among Big Winners

Many hundreds of absentee bids were already on the books by the time Milestone Auctions’ coowner and principal auctioneer Miles King stepped up to the podium to officially open the Ohio company’s May 27 Spring Premier Toy Auction. The 835-lot event, which featured virtually every popular category in the antique-toy realm, was on many a collector’s radar and had been closely monitored online, especially after word got out about a stellar collection of rare Japanese robots and space toys featured in the sale.

example of one of the most soughtafter of all classic robots. Offered together with an attractive repro box, it was chased to $20,400 against an estimate of $6,000$8,000.

The auction waters were also favorable for a great-looking Nomura battery-operated Walking Batman. The super-clean, all-original battery op appeared never to have been played with. Even its cloth cape looked as crisp as the day it marched off the factory production line. Importantly, it retained its visually appealing

As predicted, it was the postwar Japanese rarities that added the most fuel to the fire, helping to push the one-day total to a pleasing $700,000. The undisputed leader was a Masudaya 15-inch batteryoperated Target Robot from the famed “Gang of Five” series. The alloriginal bot came with its correct dart gun and two darts, as well as the pièce de résistance, its original pictorial box. Entered with an estimate of $20,000-$25,000, it went the distance and then some, selling for $34,440.

Target Robot’s wingman was a rare Yonezawa battery-operated Jupiter Robot. All original and complete with its correct remote control battery box, it was a well-preserved

original box, which has exciting graphics of Batman in crimefighting mode, with Robin visible in the background in the Batmobile. The toy sold for $12,915 against an estimate of $6,000-$8,000.

Also emerging from a Gotham City garage was a very scarce tin friction Batman Jeep. Decorated on all panels with Batman and Robin graphics plus bold Japanese writing, the lithographed vehicle came with its original box decorated with similar iconography in bright primary colors. Estimated at $4,000-$5,000, it more than doubled expectations, commanding a winning bid of $10,455.

Another extraterrestrial vehicle that captured bidders’ attention

was a rare Daiya tin friction Space Patrol Car. The jaunty red convertible with two astronaut drivers “dressed” in spacesuits and helmets doesn’t come up for sale in the marketplace very often. The toy was all original, complete, and offered with a nice repro box. It more than tripled its high estimate,

selling for $9,900. Whether it was intended to race to fires on present-day Earth, in prehistoric times or in the future, Yonezawa’s 15-inch-long tin friction Magma Ambassador Fire Truck ignited auction competition at Milestone’s event. An unusual

Two-Day Americana Sale Brings In Nearly

$2 Million

Marklin New York Paddle Wheel River Boat, From Museum Deaccession, Sells For $252,000

Pook & Pook held its second successful Americana sale of 2023 on May 4 and 5, achieving a 97.84 percent sellthrough rate and a final total of $1,991,077 for 510 lots. The auction was strong in the categories of Pennsylvania German furniture and decorative arts, Philadelphia Chippendale furniture, Philadelphia pewter, Pennsylvania quilts, a collection of Indian Peace medals, and a variety of fine art. Marquee items from big collections, museums, and institutions brought worldwide bidders and top-drawer prices.

The first lot in the sale,

the Marklin New York paddle wheel river boat, was also the top lot, crossing the block at $252,000. In the weeks prior to the auction, the item garnered considerable attention. In exceptional condition, it had been in institutional storage and hit a marketplace hungry for rare Marklin boats. Auctioneer and vice president Jamie Shearer summarized, “Pook & Pook realized premium value for this toy, more than equal to the largest auction platforms. Our work with museums and noted collectors is proving

The English Staffordshire slipware decorated doll cradle, dated 1698 and initialed “MC,” decorated in brown, cream, and russet with dotted tulips and pinwheel flowers, sold for $22,680. An early tag accompanying reads, “This pottery cradle was made in England in 1698. It belonged to Mary Logan Smith who lived 1838 to 1889.”

Inscribed on inside of door was “Eshelman family, Oley Valley, PA.” The early piece brought $39,100 in 1997 at Sotheby’s sale for James Keene and also $52,140 in 2013 at Pook & Pook’s sale for Pastor Fred Weiser.

Concluding day one was the last installment of the famed pewter collection of the late Drs. Donald and Patricia Herr. Heavily featuring the works of John, Henry, and William Will, America’s illustrious family of pewterers, the collection had bidders flocking for their last chance to obtain an object. A New York pewter tank-ard, ca. 1760, attributed to family patriarch John Will, is one of his few tankards known, and sold for $25,200. A New York flagon, ca. 1770, by brother Henry Will, sold for $17,500. Bidders chased works by William Will. Recognized as the most talented of American pewterers, his highlights included a rare Philadelphia pewter flagon, ca. 1780, selling together with an unmarked chalice for $20,000. A rare Philadelphia porringer bearing his touch crossed the block for $15,000, and a tankard for $16,250. A William Will Philadelphia footed teapot attained the highest bid at $27,500.

Collector Anecdotes And Antics

Is It Really That Precious?

Welcome to the matrix known as the antiques and collectibles trade. Today, I am offering you a choice between two different worlds. The world on the left is blue in color where everything is just as it seems. Things make sense, and the world seems to be governed by a mystical invisible force where everything works out in the end. This is in stark contrast to the world on the right that is red in color and where things don’t always add up. Visiting this world is almost like a trip down the proverbial rabbit hole. Given a choice, which world would you choose? I am offering you a choice between only two worlds, so please choose wisely.

On June 23, Wizards of the Coast released a new unique expansion for its “Magic: The

Gathering” (MTG) collectible card game. According to the promotional materials being put out by the company, this new set will not be like anything to come out before and is based on a very popular and familiar theme. The set is aptly called “The Lord of the Rings: Tales of Middle-Earth,” and fans are eagerly awaiting its arrival. This is the first crossover “Magic: The Gathering” expansion set that is based on “The Lord of the Rings” franchise. Unfortunately, things are not at all as they seem with the release of this new set.

Taking a cue from the sports card trading world, Wizards of the Coast, owned by toy giant Hasbro, announced this new set will have something never before seen in an MTG product. Buried deep within the premium collector booster boxes being sold with the release of this set is a notso-well-kept secret that has speculators, collectors, players, and enthusiasts excited.

It is here that the company announced the release of a special, unique game card of which there will be only one, making this, by default, the rarest MTG card in existence.

The card is currently being referred to as the special one ring card, due to the fact that it is a one-of-a-kind

game card that has generated massive amounts of excitement and media attention. Within the first several days of the announcement, many high profile collectors and dealers placed various bounties on whoever finds this card. The first bounty was offered for a mere $100,000. It did not take long, however, for that bounty to be eclipsed by someone else offering $250,000 for the mystical card. On June 7, it was announced via Twitter and several major news outlets that trading card dealer Dave and Adam’s would offer a bounty of $1 million for the card, assuming it is found by July 17, 2023. Given the fact this card released in sets on June 23, that is not much time to locate it. From a business perspective, it makes perfect sense for Dave and Adam’s to place an expiration on the offer, as they are trying to get the purchasers of this product to open the sealed product, while ensuring they are buying it at the height of demand.

Assuming this card is found and sold for $1 million, it would become the most valuable MTG card ever produced, eclipsing even the ultra-rare Alpha Edition

Black Lotus that is now documented as being sold for more than $500,000 in nearmint condition. Unlike the special one ring card that was just printed this year, the Alpha Edition Black Lotus was printed in 1993 before anyone knew that MTG was destined to become a pop culture juggernaut. As such, almost no one bothered to save the earliest “Magic: The Gathering” cards upon their release in 1993. These cards have true organic collectability as a result and are quite valuable on the secondary market today. This is different than the special one ring card that currently has a bounty of $1 million, even though it was printed in 2023, while demand for other MTG products is at an all-time high. Isn’t it amazing what people will pay for a mass-produced collectible that simply had its print run reduced by the manufacturer after the collectible already became a multi-billion dollar brand?

It’s almost like this is the result of some hype-driven promotional campaign to ensure all these collector booster boxes of this particular product sell out in record time (sarcasm implied). This is everything that is wrong with the current

state of the collectibles trade. It is almost like a mystical invisible force is guiding the market where everything works out in the end—at least for the manufacturers, high profile dealers, auctions houses, and grading companies. And here you thought I was taking you to the red world where things don’t always add up? Don’t I wish? Happy speculating

“Magic: The Gathering” collectors, and may the power of the special one ring card be yours. I already know how this ends, as do your wiser and older collectors with a lot of experience in these markets. That said, let’s just say Hasbro is about to hit pay dirt!

Fans of Bedrock City’s most famous residents didn’t miss the chance to bid on a boxed example of Marx’s battery-operated Fred Flintstone on Dino, accompanied by its colorful original box. “Flintstones toys have never lost their appeal,” said Miles King, coowner of Milestone Auctions. “Three generations of cartoon fans have enjoyed the Flintstones on TV, and the toys strike a chord with all of them.” The Fred on Dino was in fine working order and appeared never to have been played with. Against an estimate of $1,000-$1,500, it was off to a new owner for $2,829.

The Man of Steel also muscled his way into the top 10 in the form of a toy known as the Superman Rollover Plane. Made by Marx, the tin windup depicting Superman coming to the rescue of a piloted singleengine plane was a desirable color variant (blue airplane) and presented at auction in excellent, alloriginal condition. Together

Ever-popular pressedsteel toys had a good day at the auction. A scarce Buddy “L” windup replicating a “Scarab,” an actual streamlined car made by Stout that was a precursor to the minivan, was in flawless condition with bright red original paint and decals. It came with its original Buddy “L” box imprinted with primitive lettering and imagery and sold for $2,706 against an estimate of $400-$600.

Also, a scarce Kingsbury motor-driven pressed-steel stake-bed truck, measuring 25 inches in length, displayed excellent paint, original white rubber tires, and J.C. Penney “Little Jim” decals. It sold well above estimate for $4,080.

After the auction, Miles King remarked, “We were extremely pleased with the results, which reflected how strong the toy market is right now, not only for robots and space toys, but antique and vintage toys in general. We see new buyers at each successive toy sale, and that’s definitely a good sign for the toy hobby.”

Bryn Athyn, Pa., Museum Currently Closed For Renovations

The Philadelphia Museum of Art is presenting “Medieval Treasures from the Glencairn Museum,” a rich display of 18 works of French Romanesque and Gothic art on loan from the museum in Bryn Athyn, Pa., which is renowned for one

McIlhenny curator of European Decorative Arts and Sculpture. “This exciting collaboration further enlivens our medieval galleries with astonishing examples of stained glass and sculpture that bear remarkable narra-

12th- and 13th-century France, and Spanish Romanesque ivories. Highlights include one of the most important and best-preserved pieces of early Gothic glass in America, showing the “Flight Into Egypt” (from the Abbey Church of St. Denis, north of Paris, ca. 1140); the “Head of a King” attributed to Gislebertus, sculptor of the 12th-century portal of the Cathedral of Saint Lazare at Autun, France, ca. 1130; a capital from St. Guilhem le Désert in southern France, late 1100s–early 1200s; and limestone reliefs of the “Temptation of Christ” from the Collegiate Church of Saint Gaudens, France, ca. 1150.

“The Flight Into Egypt” (detail) is from the Abbey Church of Saint-Denis, around 1145, made in France, and on loan from Glencairn Museum, Bryn Athyn, Pa.

of the world’s finest collections of medieval sculpture and stained glass from 12th-century France. Glencairn Museum is currently closed to the public for extensive infrastructure renewal, presenting the opportunity to display highlights from its collection in context in the medieval galleries of the Philadelphia Museum of Art through October.

Glencairn Museum, located in the 1930s home built by collector Raymond Pitcairn (1885–1966), has a long history of generous loans to the museum’s medieval galleries, and often lends work to the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Met Cloisters, the J. Paul Getty Museum, and major museums across Europe, including the Louvre Museum. This is the first major loan grouping to a U.S. museum from the Glencairn Museum since 1982.

The installation is organized by Jack Hinton, Henry P.

tives intended to teach and inspire the faithful. The juxtaposition of the two collections also sheds light on the broader histories of early medieval and Gothic art and how these important gatherings of medieval art came about,” shared Hinton.

“We are proud of the nearly 100-year history of lending between our two institutions, and we are honored that the Philadelphia Museum of Art is exhibiting significant works from our collection. This is an exciting opportunity for audiences to engage with works of art with which they may not be familiar, and I am grateful for the opportunity to keep our treasures in the public eye while Glencairn is closed for renovations,” said Brian Henderson, director of Glencairn Museum.

Among the works on view are exceptional limestone and marble sculptures and figurative stained-glass panels from

A particular strength of the installation will be a group of narrative stained-glass panels from the Gothic period. The stories depicted will be

deciphered for visitors and placed into a broader context of their significance within the decorative schemes of their churches of origin. Similarly, the framing elements of some glass panels and the related decorative designs on the stone sculptures will show how narratives could be heightened by certain ornaments. The historic architectural interiors of the museum, including its Cloister and monumental portal from the Abbey Church of Saint Laurent, near CosneCours-sur-Loire, France, will lend further context and depth to the presentation. The installation will also offer insight into the story of medieval art in the United States, its relationship to faith, and how the Pitcairn family amassed the extraordinary Glencairn collection.

About Glencairn Museum

Glencairn Museum houses the collection amassed by Raymond Pitcairn (1885–1966) in the 1920s and 1930s. The house and collections came about through Pitcairn’s work on Bryn Athyn Cathedral, built for the New Church community (inspired by the teachings of Emanuel Swedenborg) of which he was a leading member, and his collecting of examples of medieval art to inspire its craftsworkers.

Glencairn is now part of Bryn Athyn Historic District, a National Historic Landmark, which comprises four buildings: Bryn Athyn Cathedral, Cairnwood Estate, Cairncrest, and Glencairn Museum. Built between 1892 and 1929, this

district contains rare and outstanding buildings of Beaux Arts and Arts and Crafts architectural styles in a rural landscape. The National Parks Service of the United States Department of the Interior named the surrounding grounds a National Historic Landmark in 2008.

About the renovation at Glencairn Museum

Glencairn Museum is currently closed to the public for major renovations. The main components of the renovation project are replacing the electrical supply and rewiring most of the building, replacing all domestic water plumbing, and replacing the heating system and adding air conditioning throughout the building. The anticipated reopening for Glencairn Museum is slated for the Christmas 2023 season.

Carlisle Import And Performance Nationals Brewed Up A Record-Setting Event

Over 2,000 Cars Converged On Carlisle Fairgrounds For Fun-Filled International Showcase

The Carlisle Import and Performance Nationals car show, in its current state, was launched in 2016 when the former Carlisle Performance and Style and Carlisle Import and Kit Nationals car shows became one. Since then, there’s been a steady growth of participation and a gradual evolution in the quality of vehicles showcased indoors and on the showfield. For 2023, the eighth offering of this mashed-up masterpiece generated an all-new showfield record of 2,097 vehicles. This total topped the previous modern-day record by 78 show cars.

Import and Performance Nationals. From general showfield participants to special vehicle displays, the participation was nothing short of aweinspiring. When showgoers entered Gate 3, the main entry point to the Carlisle, Pa., fairgrounds, they were met immediately by dozens of porsches. From there, the German showfield continued to the mid-point of the grounds and transitioned to an even more international flavor from fence line to fence line that included Italian, Ukrainian, Japanese, French, British, French, American, and Swedish cars too.

Outdoors may have looked great, but indoors was even

better. Building Y hosted a gallery of nearly a dozen RollsRoyce cars from the Rolls-Royce Museum in nearby Mechanicsburg, PA. At least two of the vehicles had a Hollywood

pedigree too, having been used in conjunction with Adam Sandler’s 2022 movie “Hustle” and the Amazon Prime program “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel.”

Adjacent to Building Y was Building T and its multi-focused gallery of cars. Another indoor display (Building R) featured French and Eastern Bloc vehicles.

Car clubs were also a big part of the two-day event, with the SAABs at Carlisle club earning the largest club honors, Volvos at Carlisle coming in second, and the Audi Club coming in third. Further, Citroens at Carlisle picked up Coolest Club honors. Additional awards were handed out by way of Carlisle Elite selections and kid’s choice, plus competition awards in low car limbo, drift limbo, rolling exhaust, and the second annual rolling burnouts and donut contest.

Additional fun elements of the event included the automotive flea market, pop-up ongrounds parades, a grand entrance by the Audi Club, and the passport program, where guests can travel the automotive world and get a stamp, special treat, and a prize at the end of their journey.

As the final hours of the 2023 event concluded, awards were posted for those who participated in professional judging; www.eJudged.com was back at it this year, offering its expertise to a few hundred car owners. Those who didn’t win still had the chance to talk with the judges to better their chances for future consideration.

The 2024 version of the event is happening May 10 and 11, and registration for it is now open.
