Cheers To 19 Years For The Rivertowne Antique Center

The Rivertowne Antique Center opened its doors in June 2004 and is throwing a big anniverary party to celebrate the good times. “Come on down by the river Friday, Saturday and Sunday, June 23, 24 and 25, as we say thank you to our customers with big discounts up to 50 percent off items throughout the store,” said coowner Ron Madar. “This three-day sale event is a don’t-miss opportunity to find that unique item at a great price,” continued Madar.

Rivertowne is a multi-dealer shop featuring 90 quality dealers and consigners offering a huge selection of authentic 18th-, 19thand 20th-century items. Shop goers will find painted country

furniture, folk art, Americana, primitives, stoneware, glassware, trade signs, general store items, mid-century and industrial pieces and decorative smalls.

“We’re enjoying our 19th year in business thanks to our great dealers and the support of our loyal customers who appreciate the good stuff,” stated co-owner Georgia Townsend.

Located along the banks of the Susquehanna River in the restored Bachman-Forry Tobacco Warehouse, Rivertowne is Columbia’s longest operating antiques center and helped set the stage for what has now become the hottest destination in the region for antiques,

First-Edition Jane Austen Novels Soar Past Estimates At Hindman

First editions of each of Jane Austen’s major novels led Hindman’s Fine Printed Books and Manuscripts Auction on May 11. The five books, including Austen’s “Pride and Prejudice” and “Sense and Sensibility,” realized more than $300,000. Overall, the sale realized more than $1.1 million and was over 94 percent sold.

“The passion of private collectors for rare works of literature and first editions led to very competitive bidding on the Jane Austen novels,” commented Gretchen Hause, Hindman vice president of books and manuscripts. “We are thrilled with the results, and to see

that the market for literature, and particularly for literature written by women, continues to gain strength.”

Jane Austen First Editions

Highlighting the five first editions was Austen’s “Pride & Prejudice” (lot 138), which sold for $107,100, more than double its high estimate. The work, written by Austen at the age of 21 and published 15 years later in a small edition of approximately 1,500 copies, stands as one of the most enduring and beloved works of 19th century literature. Austen’s first novel, “Sense and Sensibility” (lot 137), sold for $81,900 against a $20,000$30,000 estimate.

The Americana session achieved outstanding results, continuing to underscore the firm’s strength in the category. A presentation copy of the first octavo edition of John James Audubon’s “The Birds of America From Drawings Made in the United States and their Territories” (lot 362) led the Americana session, realizing $88,200. The double-elephant folio edition of Audubon’s “The Birds of America” (1827-1838) established his reputation as the greatest ornithological artist of his time, and

collectibles and vintage shopping.

On May 20 and 21, the Pewter Collectors Club of America (PCCA) held its annual meeting at the Historic Publick House Inn in Sturbridge, Mass. After the board met to discuss the business of the club, Rick Benson, one of the club’s knowledgeable members, gave a presentation titled “Introduction to Pewter.” Following a buffet dinner, the group listened to another talk by Tom Kelleher, the curator at the Old Sturbridge Village (OSV) Museum. He spoke about the history and the mission of the OSV. Tom’s talk was followed by a presentation from club members Michael and Suzanne Payne. They spoke about a pewter church flagon used by Henry Muhlenberg, the pastor who established the first Lutheran church in the United States, The Augustus Lutheran Church in Trappe, Pa.

On day two, membership went to the OSV to view their extensive pewter collection such as American and English tankards, flagons,

this octavo edition adds 65 new images for a total of 500 plates, making it “the most extensive color plate book produced in America up to that time.”

A copy of the Bible (lot 360), owned by John Adams’s granddaughter and with a partial presentation note in Adams’s hand, soared past its pre-sale estimate to realize $25,000. In addition to Adams’s warm presentation note to his granddaughter, the Bible included several leaves of family marriage, birth, and death records. Highlights also included a pair of signed 1913 letters (lot 411) from President Woodrow Wilson to Senator James A. Gorman, regarding the appointment of the “Collector of the Port of New York.” Competitive bidding drove the letters significantly above their $800-$1,200 estimate to realize $16,380.

Bidding for the auction was available in-person at Hindman’s Chicago Bid Room and via telephone and absentee bid, and online via the Digital Bid Room. For more information, visit www.hindmanauctions.com.

Collector Chats With Peter S. Seibert

This Week: Buying Art

YouTube videos of young couples talking about making their first art purchases. The narrative usually entails one or both talking about how they purchased a Salvador Dali or Marc Chagall limited-edition signed print. This spurred them on to collect more and more, and now they are committed buyers.

The topic of this column has been one that I have written about extensively over the years. Usually the topic comes to my attention when I watch

I cringe at these stories. The book “The Great Dali Art Fraud and Other Deceptions” by Lee Cattrall does a masterful job of exposing the deceptive advertising around many of the prints by modern masters being sold. It is a book worth

reading if only to make you wince and shudder a few dozen times at the nature of the frauds that are outlined on the pages.

Buying art is intimidating, and I would be remiss in not addressing that right up front. Budding collectors are often accosted by overtly enthusiastic salespeople who are busy trying to make the sale rather than educating the buyer. Buying art does take time and an investment in building your individual eye to identify pieces that you like and are also of quality.

To me, the toughest part about buying art is suspending your knowledge of an artist in order to make an assessment. People will know to look for a given artist, and when they find a painting by them, they will mentally

whoop with joy about the discovery. “Look, it’s a Walter Emerson Baum,” or, “Hey…it’s a Victor Shearer.” That discovery of a work by named artists can then blind your ability to understand the quality of the work. In particular, I call out Walter Emerson Baum (Bucks County School painter) and Victor Shearer (Reading, Pa., painter), whose respective volumes of work are substantial and sadly the consistent quality of the works is often lacking. To be blunt, when they were good, they were very good, and when they were having a bad day, their paintings were lacking. Thus all Baums or Shearers are not equal. Buying one just because of the signature is to risk getting a work that is not a beauty to behold.

One of the toughest tests of any budding art collector is to purchase an unsigned painting solely on the basis of the quality of the work. This requires one to really hone your eye and test your resolve that what you see in the work, albeit being unsigned, is worthy of bringing home. I would encourage every budding art collector to find such a work. Analyze it, study it, acknowledge its strengths and weaknesses, and then buy it!

Hanging in our dining room is a massive painting of a stream with a snow scene. The painting came from an auction run by my old friend Ted Wiederseim. The quality of the brushwork is magnificent, the scale of the painting is substantial and the composition is well balanced, but it is completely unsigned. I gambled on the work because I saw a painting of quality. It looked to be of the Bucks County School style in terms of its brushwork and subject matter, but it was unsigned. and bought it for less than I had thought it would sell for. The reason it was not a big seller was the absence of a signature. Did that make the painting less good? Not at all. It will hang in our dining room for a very long time as a great landscape by that incredibly talented and prolific artist, anonymous.

decades. By day, he is a museum director and has worked in Pennsylvania, Wyoming, Virginia and New Mexico. In addition, he advises and consults with auction houses throughout the Mid-Atlantic region, particularly about American furniture and decorative arts. Seibert’s writings include books on photography, American fraternal societies and paintings. He and his family are restoring a 1905 arts and crafts house filled with years’ worth of antique treasures found in shops, co-ops and at auctions.

An important, ca. 1820 Quebec armoire in alligatored yellow paint with the family nickname “Armoire Crocodile” sold for $29,500, and a Louis XIII armchair from the Bastien family on the Huron-Wendat reserve in Loretteville, Quebec, rang up $21,240 at the sale of the Jean-Marc and Danielle Belzile collection held May 13 by Miller & Miller Auctions Ltd., online and live at the Marriott Courtyard West Island in Quebec, Canada. All prices quoted are in Canadian dollars and include an 18-percent buyer’s premium. The current conversion rate is 1 Canadian dollar to .74 U.S.

“The Quebec audience is like none other,” observed Ethan Miller of Miller & Miller Auctions Ltd. “These people have passion. Seeing those live expressions of joy and disappointment simultaneously was invigorating. While many of the armoires fell beneath our expectations, others soared well beyond their estimates. It was the first auction held outside of Ontario for Miller & Miller, which typically holds online-only auctions, but the Jean-Marc and Danielle Belzile collection was too excellent to pass up. Beginning in the 1960s, the couple set out to find the rarest, most iconic and most unusual antiques in all of Quebec. They retained most of what they found in their personal collection, and many of the highlights from their collection are documented in reference books.

A ca. 1820 Quebec armoire, the case, doors, cornice, frieze, and stiles all in a strong alligatored yellow paint, sold for $29,500.

with what we expected. The honesty and integrity that is synonymous with the Belzile name instilled buyer confidence.”

The 72-inch-tall “Armoire Crocodile” in exceptional polychrome paint featured a layered dentil cornice, deeply molded raised panels on the doors, two raised panels on each side, a shaped base, and eight recessed panels on the center stile. The yellow paint was in dramatic contrast with the deep blue found on the moldings, panel edges and lower rail.

The ca. 1800-25 HuronWendat Louis XIII armchair in old green paint from the Bastien family had slanted back posts that were topped with prominent wings and carved flat finials. The back had three slats, two of them cut in the capucine manner. A hand-cut sawtooth skirt supported the edge of the original pine seat; the rungs were hand skived.

There were 359 lots of 18th and 19th century Quebec furniture, folk art, sculpture and Canadiana in a sale that grossed $351,079. More than 100 people attended the event live at the hotel, while 398 others registered to bid online (via LiveAuctioneers.com and MillerandMillerAuctions.com) and placed 7,900 bids. Ninetynine percent of all lots were sold, and 50 percent of the top 50 lots exceeded estimate.

An 18th century Quebec pine armoire with the rare feature of four Louis XIV hourglass shaped panels, nicknamed “the peanut,” constructed with thick pine planks and hand hewn/pit sawn backboards, fetched $17,700, while an 18th century Joliette, Quebec, bonnetiére (single door cupboard) with a shaped foot and paneled back, constructed of thick pine and having a natural surface with great patina, reached $11,800.

A rare, ca. 1820 bow front Quebec corner cupboard with a large single-door having an applied diamond motif and alloriginal blue paint, constructed with a base molding in the Louis XIII manner, with gorgeous patina, rose to $10,620. Also, a small, ca. 1810-25 storage cupboard having original slate grey paint, the Neoclassic influence in the applied molding on the panel and the tombstone (chapeau gendarme) cut-out base, made $5,015.

A ca. 1880 exterior sculpture by Louis Jobin (1845-1928) of Joseph with the Christ child holding a globe, meticulously covered in lead-tin, 57 inches tall, realized $5,015. In the late 19th century in Quebec, it was Jobin who introduced the meticulous process of applying sheets of lead, copper and tin to sculpture designated expressly for outside use.

A bronze sculpture by JeanJulien Bourgault (1910-96) of a woman in the manner of an early ship’s figurehead, from Bourgault’s original 1978 pine sculpture titled “Vent du Nord (The North Wind),” the bronze #1 in a series of 15, cast at Fonderie d’Art d’Inverness, Quebec, in 1988, standing 20 inches tall (minus the base), changed hands for $4,130.

An early Ursuline crucifix on a stepped base with a sculpted corpus (Christ on the cross), having a head and body resembling religious carvings from the medieval period, 23 inches tall, finished at $4,720, while a late 19th century carved corpus in original paint, likely from a religious institution due to its quality and size, 43 inches tall, boasting great detail with the “crown of thorns” fashioned from a hawthorn branch, also

brought $4,720.

An early Bellechasse rocking chair with the two upper back slats having heart cut-outs while the lower slat has a capucine profile, boasting superb surface and great wear to the rockers from many years of use, achieved $5,015. Also, a two-tone stepback cupboard in

untouched, original condition with the original paint, displaying great wear and patina, made in Papineauville, Quebec, ca. 1830, earned $4,425.

A ca. 1830-40 Quebec raised 12-panel armoire in as-found condition, with “waterfall” cornice and bracket base, all in old white paint over the original

dark grey, the doors having three raised flush-mounted panels, garnered $5,900. Also, a ca. 1825 Quebec armoire in asfound pristine condition, the red paint applied in the late 19th century over the original coral/salmon paint, commanded $4,720. A late 18th century Quebec Louis XIII blanket chest

in original grey and blue paint with a detailed base molding and the top having overlapping breadboard ends with a molded edge and affixed with forged snipe hinges was sold to a determined bidder for $3,835. For more information, visit www.millerandmiller auctions.com.

Vermeer? A Conversation Through Time

“Lady With A Guitar” Currently On View

Throughout the 20th century and to the present day, the Philadelphia Museum of Art’s “Lady With a Guitar” has been the subject of deep fascination and many questions. Long catalogued as a “Copy after Vermeer” in the John G. Johnson collection at the museum, the work is a replica or close duplicate of Johannes Vermeer’s “The Guitar Player” (ca. 1672) today in the collection of the Kenwood House, London. The

It was a great day at the village enjoyed by all. In the evening, another buffet-style dinner was held, and a talk by members Bob and Arlene Diercks. They spoke about their efforts to manage the group’s Facebook page and the Pewter Forum they host. Finally, the show-and-tell portion of the

hairstyles of the sitter are different, the PMA’s musician does not have corkscrew ringlets, but otherwise the images are nearly identical.

Since the 1920s, scholars have puzzled over the relationship between the two pictures. Complicating the comparison is the fact that the London painting is one of Vermeer’s bestpreserved works, while the PMA version is in a compromised condition. Most scholars have

forum was held. This is the time when members bring pieces of pewter they own and feel have some important aspects to highlight or pieces they wish to learn more about. A lively discussion usually ensues regarding each piece. At the end, club president Eric Lanka thanked everyone, especially vice president Ed McManus, who arranged and planned the annual program.

felt that “Lady” is a copy by another artist. In March 2023, however, against the backdrop of the definitive Vermeer show at Amsterdam’s Rijksmuseum, researcher Arie Wallert claimed that the PMA painting could be by Vermeer himself, altered at some time in its past by aggressive cleaning attempts that removed much of the artist’s uppermost, finishing layers of paint.

In light of the new findings, Philadelphia Museum of Art scientists, conservators, and curators are pursuing further study of the painting in collaboration with colleagues at other institutions, experts on

Vermeer, led by the PMA and using the most advanced analytical tools available. The aim is to add to knowledge of the work’s construction and materials and, it is hoped, shed more light on who made it.

“The Philadelphia Museum of Art is grateful for the past and continuing contributions of scholarship to the mysterious discourse of our ‘Lady With a Guitar,’” commented Sasha Suda, George D. Widener director and CEO. “Our conversation at the museum now is focused on the future of the painting, embracing collaborative research, seeking more knowledge, and inviting the public to

be part of the process.”

“The possibility of working even more closely with Vermeer scholars in 2024 to shed further light on PMA’s ‘Lady with a Guitar’ across centuries is incredibly stimulating,” added Carlos Basualdo, Marion Boulton “Kippy” Stroud deputy director and chief curator. “We look very much forward to a process that is collegial and open, while we continue to care for this extraordinary painting in our collection.”

“Lady With a Guitar” recently went on view in Gallery 364 and will be up through late 2023. This is a unique public opportunity to see the painting in unrestored condition prior to the previousily mentioned continued research.

“The Guitar Player,” also called “Lady With a Guitar,” done around 1670–1720, possibly by Johannes Vermeer, Dutch (active Delft), 1632-75, is an oilon-canvas, at the Philadelphia Museum of Art, John G. Johnson collection, 1917, cat. 497.

The Philadelphia Museum of Art is located at 2600 Benjamin Franklin Parkway.
