Amazing Spider-Man #1, CGC-graded 9.6 NM+, Could Rock The House At Hake’s Auction

Two-Day Pop Culture Sale Set For July 25 And 26

Hake’s Tuesday and Wednesday, July 25 and 26, auction of pop culture memorabilia serves as an exciting virtual showcase of “firsts.” There are first appearances of comic book superheroes, rare first issues, and first iterations of classic action figures. The 1,930-lot sale encompasses dozens of categories

president of Hake’s Auctions. Without question, the most buzzworthy comic book in the sale is a CGC 9.6 NM+ copy of “Amazing Spider-Man #1” (March 1963) with white pages. It is one of only five CGC 9.6 copies known to exist and one of only three at that grade level to reach the auction marketplace in over a decade. The most recently auctioned ASM #1, which had offwhite pages as opposed to the more-desirable white pages seen in Hake’s example, sold in 2022 for $336,000. “Even the most advanced comic book collectors are expected to go after the one in our sale with

This 1910 postcard is from the sought-after “PC796 Sepia Postcards” series. It depicts Ty Cobb (HOF) shaking hands with Honus Wagner (HOF) at the 1909 World Series, which pitted Cobb’s Detroit Tigers against Wagner’s ultimately victorious Pittsburgh Pirates, and is PSA-graded 2 (MK) Good, estimated at $10,000$20,000.

Marvel “Amazing Spider-Man” #1 (March 1963), CGC 9.6 NM+, white pages, one of only five CGC 9.6 copies in existence and one of only three in its grade to have been offered for public sale in the past 10 years, will be estimated at $350,000+

of America’s most sought-after collectibles, from political and sports to “Star Wars” and “Transformers,” with bidding now available through Hake’s online platform.

More than 300 CGC-certified comic books will change hands, including examples of nearly all of Marvel’s key Silver Age titles. “There are even multiple copies of some of the most desirable issues, so it’s definitely going to be a ‘collector’s choice’ auction,” said Alex Winter,

A Kenner 1978 “Star Wars” Luke Skywalker 12 Back-C action figure with double-telescoping lightsaber, AFA 85 NM+ (highest-graded example ever auctioned by Hake’s), 3.75 inches tall, card unpunched, no price sticker, archival case, is estimated at $50,000-$75,000.

Neal Adams’ original pen-and-ink art for Page 19 of the DC comic book “Green Lantern” Vol. 2, #80 (October 1970), inked by Dick Giordano and Mike Peppe, actionpacked depiction from the “Even An Immortal Can Die!” storyline, with Green Lantern’s power ring employed in all four panels and viewable in three of them, is estimated at $20,000-$35,000.

a vengeance, because a better copy might not come to auction anytime soon, if ever. This is a very rare opportunity for collectors to get their hands on an incredible, very high-grade example of this key book,” said Winter.

The CGC has graded a total of 4,688 “Spider-Man #1” comics. The one consigned to Hake’s, from the collection of John B. Goodrich, was

Dana Auctions LLC recently announced its next catalogued textile auction will include over 80 lots of vintage and antique quilts, quilt tops, and printed feedsacks from the living estate of noted Pennsylvania antique textile dealer and author Sharon Sheehe Stark. Also offered will be a collection of quilts and other bedcoverings and textiles from the late 18th century to the late 20th century.

This will be the first of likely three auctions to include textiles from Stark’s collection. Stark was a popular quilt and textile dealer in Berks County, Pa., for several decades. She may be best known for her vast knowledge and collection of vintage printed feedsacks. Her website, no longer available, www.Rickrack.com, hosted her online business, Sharon’s Antiques Vintage Fabrics and Textiles. She was one of the first to offer not just vintage textiles for sale but also a wealth of information and resources for researchers and collectors.

Printed feedsacks are still highly collectible, and her inventory includes many desirable examples. Prior to selling on eBay in 1997, she sold at local markets, while her partner, Bill, operated a used bookstore. He closed his brickand-mortar store to move his inventory online and assisted Sharon with her website. They scanned images, given this was fairly early in the digital era and cell phones weren’t advanced yet.

Stark is also the author of the novel “A Wrestling Season” and a collection of short stories, “The Dealers’ Yard.” Her stories have

Hindman’s summer American Historical Ephemera and Photography Auction on June 15 and 16 saw strong bidding for early photographs and material surrounding America’s westward

expansion. A halfplate daguerreotype of three gold miners realized $37,800, five times its estimate. The image of the three men epitomizes the gold rush itself, as their somewhat haggard appearance is offset by supremely resolute expressions behind their lit cigars.

“From early photography to manuscript archives, our team was excited to bring such a wide range of important historic memorabilia to auction. The strong prices achieved, particularly for historic images, demonstrate Hindman’s role as a market leader in the category of early photography,” stated Katie Horstman of Hindman Auctions. Overall, the

auction realized $913,752, and the majority of lots sold within or above the high estimates.

graded very recently and is one of the seven best copies documented in two decades of record-keeping, The issue will be displayed at Comic-Con from July 19 to 23 in San Diego, Calif., and is expected to draw huge interest from fans.

Another significant book from the Marvel universe, “Amazing Fantasy #15” (August 1962), features the first appearance of Spider-Man/Peter Parker and also introduces the agile superhero’s guardians, Aunt May and Uncle Ben. A CGC 7.5 VF copy of the book, also from the John B. Goodrich collection, is entered with an auction estimate of $100,000$200,000.

As original comic book art continues to wield its impact in fine art circles, increasing numbers of collectors are flocking to Hake’s sales to acquire choice pieces. The sale is packed with

important highlights, such as Neal Adams’ original pen-andink art for Page 19 of the DC comic book “Green Lantern Vol. 2, #80” (October 1970). Inked by Dick Giordano and Mike Peppe, the page is an action-packed depiction from the “Even An Immortal Can Die!” storyline. Green Lantern’s power ring is in use in all four panels and is viewable in three of them, including an incredible closeup view. The artwork is estimated at $20,000-$35,000.

Comic book, comic art and “Star Wars” collectors will likely engage in a crossover bidding war for Howard Chaykin’s penand-ink original art for Page 26 of the Marvel comic book “Star Wars #1” (July 1977), and also from Part I of the “Star Wars: A New Hope” movie adaptation. The six panels, the last of which is artist-signed, show Luke Skywalker searching for C-3PO and R2-D2 at the Lars Homestead. This offering marks another first for Hake’s, since

From a 1960 series of political campaign buttons known as the “JFK Big Four,” which will be auctioned by Hake’s as four consecutive lots, this is a very rare “Democracy For Jack Kennedy” portrait button regarded as the anchor to the coveted set. It is 3.5 inches diameter and estimated at $20,000-$35,000.

original art from this debut issue has never before appeared at any auction. It has an opening bid of $10,000.

The “Star Wars” thrills continue with action figures, led by a 1979 Kenner Boba Fett L-slot rocket-firing prototype. AFAgraded 75+ EX+/NM, the unpainted 3.75-inch-tall figure does not have its rocket accessory, but that should not deter fans of early “Star Wars” toy productions. “It should still hit six figures,” according to Winter. Accompanied by a notarized CIB COA, the figure will cross the auction block with an estimate of $100,000-$200,000.

The highest-graded (AFA 85 NM+) example of a 1978 Kenner “Star Wars” Luke Skywalker 12 Back-C action figure ever to be offered by Hake’s will make its appearance complete with its double-telescoping lightsaber, on an unpunched card with no price sticker. The 3.75-inch figure in its archival case is one of the nicest of any of its type known to exist and is cataloged with a $50,000-$75,000 estimate.

Obscure, sometimes previously unknown political memorabilia is routinely found in Hake’s sales, and the July event is no exception. A complete set of impossibly rare 1960 campaign buttons known as the “JFK Big Four,” arguably in the same league as the exalted Cox and Roosevelt jugate buttons, will be auctioned as consecutive lots. A 3.5-inch “Democracy For Jack Kennedy” portrait button, considered the jewel of the elusive set, will be offered with a $20,000-$35,000 estimate.

An original movie prop from “Star Wars: Episode IV – A New Hope: Destruction of the Death Star” ranks among the most iconic and immediately identifiable film props Hake’s has ever handled. Painted polyurethanefoam panel comes from the climactic “Trench Run” sequence in which Luke Skywalker and other Rebel Alliance pilots navigate perilous conditions to ultimately destroy the Death Star. It was created around 1977 by Industrial Light & Magic’s model miniature department and is expected to sell for $35,000$50,000.

An early treasure from the sale’s fascinating array of sports memorabilia is a 1910 postcard from the sought-after “PC796 Sepia Postcards” series. It depicts Hall of Famers Ty Cobb and Honus Wagner shaking hands at the 1909 World Series, which pitted Cobb’s Detroit Tigers against Wagner’s ultimately victorious Pittsburgh Pirates. Early Owego Antique Center Marks 10th Anniversary

Multi-Dealer Shop Business Expands To Include Live Auctions By Mead & Sons Auctioneers

There is a hub of activity at Early Owego Antique Center (EOAC), located at 43-45 Lake St., Owego, N.Y. This year, the business is celebrating its 10th anniversary and recently expanded to include live auctions. A multi-dealer antique mall, EOAC offers antiques, vintage collectibles, memorabilia, furniture, clothing, books, jewelry and much more. Looking back, Jim and Cornelia Mead, longtime residents of the area, wanted to bring new life to the iconic J.J. Newberry’s department store, so an antique mall was born. The property had sat vacant for some time and also fell victim to extensive damage from the flood of 2011.

Better days emerged, and on opening day, Feb. 14, 2013, crowds of people gathered at EOAC to welcome the new antique mall, just like the flood

of people that surrounded the opening of the J.J. Newberry’s department store in 1958. EOAC’s second floor opened the following year. Owego is the county seat for Tioga County and represents the gateway to the Finger Lakes region from the Southern Tier. Locals and tourists alike find it a romantic river town with Victorian era charm.

Today, EOAC is going strong with nearly 100 dealers on the two floors. There is a waiting list for new vendors. “It was always our goal to do something of value with the building, so the antique center is good for the Historic Owego Marketplace, and also good for the village. We are excited to be celebrating 10 years of providing our loyal shoppers with a broad assortment of ever-changing inventory with price points to fit everyone’s budget,” said Jim Mead.

One part of EOAC’s success, noted Mead, is the dedicated staff that makes customers feel welcome and assists them in finding items.”

Mead also credits his family, with a special nod to his wife, Cornelia, who has a finance background,

been anthologized in Best American Short Stories, Pushcart Prize Stories, and the O. Henry Prize Stories.

“Tunnels and Walls and Other Ways of Getting There,” one of her earliest short stories, explores the convoluted paths the psyche takes in achieving its goals.

“I remember meeting Sharon and Bill at a quilt study group in the Emmaus, Pa., area several years prior to Covid,” stated Dana Balsamo, owner and auctioneer at Dana Auctions LLC. “I felt like I had known Sharon for so long because we had both

been members of the early Vintage Fabrics Yahoo Group, and I utilized her website several times for research purposes. She also contributed to the www.Fabrics.net website on a variety of textile topics. She was always very generous with her knowledge. I now consider it an honor and privilege to assist Ms. Stark and her family with offering her inventory and collection to a new group of collectors and dealers as well as her longtime clients.”

The Dana Auctions LLC Antique and Vintage Quilt and Textile Auction will be live and simulcasted online on Saturday, July 29, starting at 11

and is, the “numbers person” of the business.

Yet a big part of EOAC’s success, Mead remarked, is from “the efforts of the vendors.” EOAC offers the opportunity for local vendors to display a menagerie of items, ranging from everyday treasures to the eclectic. For guests who walk through the front entrance for the first time, and for those who are regular shoppers, it’s always like a trip back in time.

EOAC has nearly everything you could imagine, and dealers choose things, Mead said, that appeal to as broad a range of buyer as possible. From interior decorators, the casual and the curious, to experienced collectors, Early Owego has the variety to suit every taste.

The business has now expanded to include live auctions on the lower level of the property, building on a long history of professional service in the auction industry. On Feb. 25, Mead & Sons Auctioneers hosted an inaugural live auction. Mead explained that 70 individuals attended the first live auction, and 50 of those folks walked away with a purchase. Since then, Mead & Sons has

held a consignment auction every month featuring a wide variety of furniture, antiques, jewelry and decorative arts. In the near future, additional renovations are planned on the lower level to update restrooms and add a small kitchen. The spacious area offers plenty of room for storage and extra chairs for the auctions.

The Mead family has an abundance of auction experience. Jim’s father, Col. Jerry Mead, founded Mead & Sons Auctioneers in 1946. Jim Mead brings to the auction block six decades of experience, and joining him are his son, James Mead, and auctioneer Lucas Kaczynski. James graduated from North Carolina’s Mendenhall School of Auctioneering in 2014, and Kaczynski is a graduate of the World Wide College of

Auctioneering located in West Des Moines, Iowa. Another team member, Fran Antalek, is the auction floor manager, and brings to the block nearly 30 years of professional industry service and experience.

Mead reminisced about his father, Jerry, who held the role of Owego Chief of Police in the early

1950s and also operated other businesses nearby, such as a bus stand where bus tickets were sold along with newspapers, tobacco, and sweet treats, hence the Mead family’s footprints still linger in Owego. “Here, I own a building now, and just a few steps from where my Dad worked in his formative years,” reflected Mead. In the near future, Jim envisions renting out vintage bicycles to the public, so that the Owego

experience can include taking a spin around the village. Housed on the lower level is a collection of balloon-tire bicycles, and once they are road-ready and several business-related aspects are worked out, he hopes to add this unique transportation initiative to the community.
