Anova Books The independent publisher with heritage 2010 was a year of award-winning titles for Anova Books. We are proud to be working with such a range of truly amazing and inspiring authors. Warm Bread and Honey Cake (Pavilion) was winner of the ‘Cookery Book of the Year 2010’ category at The Guild of Food Writers Awards. With World Cup football reaching fever pitch in the summer we had our own sporting excitement with Feet of the Chameleon: The Story of African Football (Portico) winning the ‘Best Football Book’ category at the British Sports Book Awards. And not to forget our children’s list with Germs! (Pavilion), which was selected as one of the top fifty children’s books of the year by Scholastic Education Plus. Anova Books also had a fantastic year of successful BBC Television book tie-ins. 2010 started with Conway’s Empire of the Seas reaching No. 2 in the Sunday Times Bestseller chart. In the summer we had Victorian Pharmacy (Pavilion) and Britain by Bike (Batsford). For the winter schedules we have the major new BBC2 series Edwardian Farm (Pavilion) starting before Christmas. And then there is Arctic with Bruce Parry (Conway) still to come! Two exciting new publishing ventures for Batsford in 2011 will be a series of weekend walking guides and a major new series of London tourist guides. We will also be introducing a collection of beautifully designed notebooks in our new Anova Stationery range, in April. A big thank you and well done to all of our authors, customers and partners for their support in 2010! Here’s to 2011 and another year of publishing wonderful, award-winning books.

PAVILION HISTORY

Historian Ruth Goodman is an expert in nineteenth-century social and domestic history and has appeared in a number of television series, most recently Victorian Pharmacy. Alex Langlands is an archaeologist and historian and has had a fascination with the British landscape since early childhood. Peter Ginn is also an archaeologist and has been involved in a great deal of experimental archaeology; Edwardian Farm represents the third time he has dropped everything to become a farmer for a year – the first being with Alex and Ruth in Tales from the Green Valley, then Victorian Farm and now this exciting new adventure.

Alex Langlands, Peter Ginn and Ruth Goodman 9781862058859 | £25 | November 2010 | HB Over 150 colour illustrations and photographs | 288 pages | 245 x 190 mm

• Follow-up to the hit BBC series Victorian Farm • Victorian Farm sold over 40,000 copies (Nielsen Bookscan figures) and became a Sunday Times No. 1 Bestseller • Includes projects and recipes to try at home Following on from the hit BBC series Victorian Farm, this book accompanies a new 12-part BBC series. This time, Ruth Goodman, Alex Langlands and Peter Ginn take a leap forward in time to immerse themselves in an Edwardian community in the West Country. In the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, Morwellham Quay was situated in a bustling and commercially prosperous region – a stunning rural landscape encompassing rolling farmland, wild moorland, tidal river, coast and forest, which supported a vibrant and diverse economy. Ruth, Peter and Alex will spend a year exploring all aspects of this working landscape – restoring boats, buildings and equipment, cultivating crops, fishing, rearing animals and rediscovering the lost heritage of this fascinating era as well as facing the challenges of increasingly commercial farming practices, fishing and community events.

Sarah Fraser

9781862058422 | £25 | March | HB Over 150 colour photographs | 224 pages | 276 x 216 mm

• Beautifully illustrated and expertly written • Provides an insight into the styles and philosophies of the world's leading designers • Includes key plant choices for each garden We may be familiar with the gardens designers have created for their clients, but what happens in their own backyards? This fascinating book takes a peek at the gardens of some of the world's most influential designers, investigating how they differ from their commissioned work, the design process and how they reflect their owner's design philosophy. Private gardens are often places for experimentation, either with untried plants, novel construction techniques or innovative ways of handling space. Some designers use their gardens as 'gallery spaces' – perfect representations of the heart and soul of their work. Others may be radically different to a designer's commissioned projects. That private gardens are the site for experimenting with new ideas, suggests that a peek through the garden gate will be a privileged look into the future. Noel Kingsbury is uniquely placed to interpret the work of the leading garden makers. A respected designer in his own right, he has been influential in bringing new planting styles to the UK from Europe and the US. He writes for Gardens Illustrated and The Garden, and has a column in Homes and Gardens. Other books include The New Perennial Garden, Designing with Plants, and Gardens by Design.

9781862059108 | £15.99 | March | HB 80 colour photographs | 176 pages | 246 x 189 mm

• An inspiring book for both gardeners and cooks • Bring Italy to your table by growing your own produce • Simple gardening advice and delicious recipes In 2002 Sarah Fraser and her family moved to a ramshackle Italian farmhouse in Tuscany with dreams of self-sufficiency and a more ‘down-to-earth’ lifestyle. Seven years and three TV series later (Channel 4’s No Going Back, A Year in Tuscany and The Great Italian Escape), Sarah has amassed a wealth of knowledge about cultivating Italian produce and what you can do with it. This is the perfect book for anyone who loves Italian food and would like to know how to grow it – even on a small scale. Whether you have a balcony, a patio, or space for a full kitchen garden, Sarah provides a wealth of easy-tounderstand instructions and advice – tried and tested in her own garden. Basic information on how to get started, soil preparation, tools and choosing what to grow, is followed by information on individual vegetables, fruits and herbs, each with a delicious selection of recipes. If you’ve ever wondered why Italian food tastes so good, this is the book for you. Sarah Fraser moved with her family to Tuscany in 2002 to renovate a dilapidated farmhouse - Casa del Sole. The family's adventures adapting to Italian life, running a guesthouse business, and striving for self-sufficiency were followed in three series for Channel 4 No Going Back, A Year in Tuscany and The Great Italian Escape. Sarah founded Tuscan Living Magazine and runs the farm shop between editing, developing her kitchen garden and testing recipes on family and friends.

Nigel Rees is an outstanding author whose many books have mostly been concerned with the popular use of the English language and especially the humour that derives from it. As a broadcaster, he is best known as deviser and presenter of BBC Radio's Quote...Unquote programme, which has been delighting audiences for over 25 years.

Don’t You Know There’s A War On? Nigel Rees 9781906388997 | £9.99 | March | HB 256 pages | 188 x 117 mm

• Nostalgic and witty catchphrases from wartime Britain • From the now popular 'Keep Calm and Carry On' to forgotten favourites such as 'SWALK' • Describes the provenance of wartime phrases that still help us through life's little ups and downs today Nigel Rees presents a nostalgic and witty guide to wartime catchphrases, from the now ubiquitous 'Keep Calm and Carry On' to lesser-known gems such as 'lions led by donkeys'. Following his hugely popular survey of domestic sayings, More Tea, Vicar?, Rees returns with a examination of the catchphrases that saw us through wartime Britain and are still relevant in times of crisis today. Including domestic phrases of the time, propaganda, and slang developed by soldiers abroad, the book describes the provenance and notable uses of familiar phrases that we tend to trot out unthinkingly as a way of dealing with life's little difficulties and embarrassments.

Each season is introduced with an excerpt from a contemporary Victorian poem and accompanied by beautiful colour illustrations. Troubleshooting tips on protecting your hives and keeping your bees healthy are also covered. The book is packed with practical advice on using beeswax, as well as, of course, extracting and making the tastiest honey. Ron Brown (OBE) had over 30 years experience of keeping bees, both in Britain and central Africa. A former editor of the monthly journal Beekeeping, he travelled all over the world to give lectures on specialist beekeeping topics, and regularly lectured on beekeeping throughout the UK.

• New paperback edition of this bestselling book • Contains numerous step-by-step demonstrations • Covers a range of exciting techniques to encourage painters to be bold with watercolour

• New in paperback • Highly acclaimed experts John Hammond and Robin Capon teach you how to use acrylic techniques to express what you feel • Richly illustrated throughout

Watercolour is celebrated for its ability to produce subtle, variegated washes, but it is possible to use watercolour as boldly and powerfully as any other medium, and the wonderfully vibrant paintings of Annette Kane demonstrate this perfectly. The emphasis is on bold brushwork and strong colour, and Kane is not afraid to combine or enhance her effects in watercolour with other elements, such as ink, acrylic and gouache. With a number of step-by-step demonstrations in addition to stunning finished paintings, the book gives any painter confidence to be bold in watercolour.

It is not enough to learn just the techniques but to understand how to choose the right technique to express what you feel or how to interpret what you see. It is also important to paint the right element of what you see to give real impact. Using your instinct to simplify and exaggerate, the book shows you how to have freedom of expression with a paintbrush.

Chapters include the following: Essential Skills, Vibrant Colour, Sunlight and Shadows, A Personal Response, Freedom and Control and Ideas and Approaches.

One of the key elements of the book is the 'picture analysis' at the end of each chapter. A single painting is dissected to highlight – in summary – all the major points made within that chapter. Richly illustrated throughout with finished paintings, close-up details and step-by-step instructions.

Annette Kane is a celebrated watercolourist. She has had successful solo exhibitions in New York and Amsterdam and is regularly exhibited at the Catto Gallery in London. She appeared regularly as an art expert for Channel 4's Watercolour Challenge. Robin Capon is an experienced author and art journalist and a regular contributor to The Artist magazine and Leisure Painter.

John Hammond studied at Wimbledon School of Art and Bath Academy of Art. He began working as a professional artist in 1982, and his paintings have attracted interest ever since, with sell-out exhibitions in the UK's best galleries. Robin Capon is an experienced author and art journalist and a regular contributor to The Artist magazine and Leisure Painter.

BATSFORD TEXTILES

After 12 years in the fashion industry as a designer and pattern cutter, and then as a tutor on fashion subjects, Wendy Cotterill developed an interest in broader textiles-related subjects. She is now a teacher of textile art and exhibits her successful experimental work.

• Use spunbonded fabrics to create stunning effects that cannot be achieved with many other manmade or natural fibres • Covers a range of exciting fabrics, from Tyvek to Lutradur, plus new fabrics such as Evolon and heat-distressable tissue • Fabrics can be washed, dyed, painted, printed, stitched, burned, fused, foiled, stencilled and slashed to create beautiful and innovative effects Lutradur and Evolon belong to a category of manmade fabrics called spunbonded textiles. They have been available for a few years, but the explosion of their use in the textile world is very recent. They are spun-bound, non-woven polyesters, which are very strong and flexible, but soft to the touch and ideal for textile art. All the different types of spunbonded textiles are covered including Lutradur, Evolon, heat distressable tissue and some older textiles in this category, such as Tyvek, nappy (diaper) liner and kunin felt. The author introduces a range of simple colouring techniques, from painting and printing to dyeing. The book then guides you through heat-distressing, fusing and soldering techniques for which these spunbonded textiles are perfect. The other popular technique – image transfer – is also made simple with these manmade fabrics. Other techniques explained, step-by-step, include foiling and stamping.

The Museum holds a great breadth of material in its Collections, from film and oral history to historic works of art, including the Government War Art schemes of the First and Second World Wars, and large objects.

• New edition of the Sunday Times bestseller • Expands on all the themes raised by the hugely successful BBC2 series presented by Dan Snow • Timely reassessment of the role of the Royal Navy in British life

• A timely volume telling the remarkable story of HMS Warrior, published to coincide with the 150th anniversary of her launch • One of Portsmouth Historic Dockyard's most iconic attractions, Warrior was a revolutionary ship and the supreme symbol of British naval might in the Victorian age • A brand new photographic record of the entire ship complete with a newly commissioned set of detailed plans

The year 1588 marked a turning point in our national story. Victory over the Spanish Armada transformed us into a seafaring nation and it sparked a myth that one day would become a reality – that the nation’s new destiny, the source of her future wealth and power lay out on the oceans. This book tells the story of how the navy expanded from a tiny force to become the most complex industrial enterprise on earth; how the need to organise it laid the foundations of our civil service and our economy; and how it transformed our culture, our sense of national identity and our democracy. Re-issued in small paperback format Brian Lavery’s narrative weaves together all the threads of the story to create a compelling read that takes us from late Tudor times to the First World War, and which is every bit as engaging as the series itself. Brian Lavery was Series Consultant on the BBC series. He is a Curator Emeritus at the National Maritime Museum, Greenwich, and a renowned expert on the sailing navy. In 2007 he won the prestigious Desmond Wettern Maritime Media Award. His naval writing was further honoured in 2008 with the Society of Nautical Research’s Anderson Medal.

76

Built to underline Victorian Britain's supremacy at sea, HMS Warrior was the world's first iron-hulled, armoured warship. In 1979 she was rescued from ignominy as an oil jetty in Milford Haven to become the subject of an ambitious restoration programme, and for the last twenty years has been open to the public at Portsmouth Historic Dockyard. The story of her revolutionary design, career history and the strange twists of fate that enabled her to survive into an age when her significance in naval architecture would be fully recognised, is described in detail together with the meticulous research that went into faithfully restoring every aspect of the ship. Complete with archival illustrations and photographs, specially commissioned photography, lines plans and diagrams, this is a comprehensive and elegantly produced commemorative volume of a remarkable ship. Andrew Lambert is Laughton Professor of Naval History in the Department of War Studies at King's College, London. He has written numerous historical works, including the recent bestsellers Admirals: The Naval Commanders Who Made Britain Great and Franklin: Tragic Hero of Polar Navigation.

PORTICO HUMOUR

Moose is one year old and lives in Hoxton with his master. He enjoys snow, chasing squirrels and spending time in the park with Martin, who likes to take pictures of him. This is his first book.

200 black and white illustrations | 208 pages | 160 x 125 mm

• Timed to hit the shelves for Easter 2011, the zenith of the gardening year • A typical chapter - Pond Life - regales readers with tales of impossible-to-kill algae, blocked fountains, reclusive goldfish, useless heron deterrents, unflowering water lilies, leaking pondliners, solarpowered objets d’art and stupid, stupid frogs • A great point-of-sale title for every garden centre in the country

• From the Daily Mail's resident cartoonist, MAC • A brilliantly hilarious collection of golfing cartoons and one-liner captions as published in the Daily Mail • Following hot on the heels of MAC: The Political Years, also available from Portico

Following in the curmudgeonly footsteps of The Grumpy Driver’s and Golfer’s Handbooks, is a compilation of all things frustrating about maintaining the average domestic garden. Grump’s attempts to improve his extra room outdoors are thwarted at every turn. His lawn develops alopecia, his fruit trees are shunned by all pollinating insects, his veg is a big hit with slugs and his Indian sandstone patio becomes an ingenious sunken garden.

Best-selling Daily Mail cartoonist MAC has tickled readers’ funny bones for over thirty years, and in this collection he aims his sights on golfers. With his usual wit and one-liners MAC captures all the highs and lows of the game. From tee to bunker, golfers and those who love them will be laughing out loud at birdies, eagles and albatrosses. This is a book no golf bag should be without! Stan McMurtry (Mac) has been a social and political cartoonist for the Daily Mail since 1970. He has recently been honoured with an MBE.

Chapters include Pruning, Weeding, Compost, Sheds, Pond Life, TV Gardening, Pests and Living With ‘Leaf Lady’, a woman hell-bent on identifying every foreign leaf that is swept into her garden – and returning it... Amos Grump has been gently killing things in his garden since he was old enough to bend a trowel. Despite taking advice from TV and radio gardening programmes, magazines, seed packets and the odd training course, he has still managed to produce a horticultural bomb site in his back garden.

• 'The funniest book on bird watching I have ever read' – British Birdwatching review • A classic reference for all birders and twitchers, written in Bill Oddie's inimitable style • Revised and reissued in hardback in 2011 – a year in which twitching will be more popular than ever!

• The definitive biography of the longest surviving scene in the history of British music • An in-depth, insiders account of the culture, the music, the artists and the people that created the British Soul Scene • Contains rare interviews with artists from Motown right up to Fatboy Slim

'Bird-watchers are tense, competitive, selfish, shifty, dishonest, distrusting, boorish, pedantic, unsentimental, arrogant and – above all – envious'. So says Bill Oddie, and he should know! It's a tough environment out there on marsh and moorland, and this scurrilous little classic is a must for all devoted birders and twitchers (and as Bill relates, there is a mighty difference!). Whether discussing the birds he's seen, the birds that got away, equipment, apparel, sightings, cock-ups, places to visit or people to avoid, Bill's enthusiasm is infectious, and his knowledge unsurpassed. This little black book is one item that no serious birdwatcher can afford to leave out of the rucksack, and it will prove an essential companion when trudging the estuaries and riverbanks, in torrential rain and gusty gale, in search of that elusive rare beauty. Comedy writer, pop singer, musician, TV presenter, entertainer, naturalist, environmental campaigner and author, Bill Oddie is one of Britain's best-loved personalities. One-time star of The Goodies, he is latterly most famous for his popular BBC shows Springwatch and Autumnwatch. Bill is popularly acknowledged as one of the UK's leading experts on bird-watching, and in October 2003 he was awarded an OBE for his services to Wildlife Conservation.

What began as an underground 60s Mod scene in unlicensed, no-frills clubs in the north west of England became a youth craze that has long surpassed all others. The Northern Soul scene has confounded its critics by surviving and growing into an adult dance phenomenon whose followers share a passion for the music of Black America unrivalled anywhere else in the world. The Story of Northern Soul takes the first ever in-depth look at the culture, the music, the artists and the people frequenting the all-night venues which are synonymous with the British Soul Scene. Packed with memorabilia and anecdotes from the Twisted Wheel in Manchester to the mighty Wigan Casino, The Story of Northern Soul is the definitive history of a dance scene that refuses to die. David Nowell is regarded as a figurehead of the Northern Soul scene. He is also the co-author of Soul Survivors: The Wigan Casino Story with Russ Winstanley.

• A unique and entertaining mathematical approach to the Beautiful Game, and all your other favourite sports • Learn how to beat the odds, how to always win at tennis and how to take a penalty and score every time – using the power of mathematics • From bestselling author, and expert in the field, Rob Eastaway

• A side-splitting collection of literary blunders and horrendous howlers from author to publisher to printer • Portico's follow up to the bestselling A Steroid Hit the Earth • From bestselling author Peter Haining

The Hidden Mathematics of Sport takes a novel and intriguing look at sport, by exploring the mathematics behind the action. Discover the best tactics for taking a penalty, the pros and cons of being a consistent golfer, the surprising link between boxing and figure skating, the unusual location of England's earliest 'football' (in a parish church), and the formula for always winning a game of tennis. Whatever your sporting interests, you will find plenty to absorb and amuse you in this insightful and unique book. Rob Eastaway is an author and freelance lecturer. Several of his books have been on the maths of everyday life, and he has also written on cricket and memory. Dr John Haigh graduated in maths from Oxford University, where he was awarded an Oxford blue for football and played at Wembley Stadium. Sadly, the other side won 5–2. He lives in Brighton, teaches at Sussex University and reads the sports pages before the rest of the newspaper.

Following on from the hilarious collection of typos, gaffes and howlers in Portico’s A Steroid Hit the Earth, comes Wrotten English – a fabulously funny collection of literary blunders from classic, and not-so classic, works of literature. This book is an anthology of side-splitting authors' errors, publishers' boobs, printers' devils, terrible titles, comical clangers and all manner of literary lunacy dating back to the invention of the printing press. Painstakingly researched and tapping in to the public's insatiable general interest with the written word, Wrotten English contains curious opening lines, fantastic fictions whose titles are too terrible to be true and some of the most suggestive double entendres written by those who really should know better! A former newspaper reporter, magazine editor and publishing executive, Peter Haining was best known as a prolific author and editor, having contributed to more than 170 publications in his lifetime. He wrote both fiction and non-fiction, with a strong focus on horror and fantasy, but also on a variety of subjects from the Second World War to Doctor Who.
