I love adoption announcements here at Animal Friends. That beep comes over the intercom and the adoption counselor starts with “It’s a great day for <insert name of animal here> who has just found her loving home …” For me, that intercom beep is like the tinkling of a bell in that old Christmas favorite “It’s a Wonderful Life,” except our angels are getting their wings in the form of homes – and their own little piece of heaven. We check in with our adopters to see how things are going. We hear great stories of the bonds that are being formed and see videos of their silly antics. And, yes, we help them through the inevitable struggles ... and the occasional chewed couch. But we also hear about the need for access to affordable wellness care. Routine care (excluding food and treats) can cost hundreds of dollars each year. If a pet gets sick or injured, it can easily turn into thousands. The easy solution would be to just take the pet back. If the adopter can’t afford it, then maybe they shouldn’t have a pet. But is that in the best interest of the pet – or the person – to break that critical, heartfelt bond? To cycle the pet back through the sheltering system? It can’t be. And I know we can do better.

ANIMAL FRIENDS DIRECTORY

That’s just one of the reasons I’m so proud of our commitment to build the Howard Ash Animal Wellness Center at Animal Friends. Providing affordable spay/neuter, wellness care and food for financially strapped pet owners not only helps the people, it also ensures that the pets stay healthy and right where they belong – in their home. And, it allows Animal Friends to focus on the thousands of stray, homeless or abused animals that really need us. Progress on the Howard Ash Animal Wellness Center has been great over the past 60 days. The roof is on. The parking lots are complete. The Center is taking shape and, thanks to the diligent work of Burchick Construction, we are still on track for a grand opening in spring 2017! Keep your eyes open for more updates, details and even opportunities to see our progress in person over the coming months. And, of course, you will be hearing about how you can support this important project. After all, it’s not good enough to help our residents get their wings … er … homes. We have to make sure they keep them.

It’s Hip to be T ipped! One of the most overlooked and often misunderstood members of the animal kingdom are community (also referred to as feral) cats. Many of these cats have spent their entire lives outside with little to no human contact and are happiest staying outdoors. With a little help from their human caregivers, they can live perfectly safe, happy and healthy lives while staying in an environment that is familiar and comfortable for them. Animal Friends is committed to humanely reducing feral cat populations with our Trap Neuter Vaccinate Return (TNVR) program. Through our TNVR program, we offer a full spectrum of services – including education, trapping, vaccinations and surgeries. Before being returned to their colonies, the cats are given a small “ear tip” so that they can be identified in the future – which is why it’s hip to be tipped! In honor of National Feral Cat Day, Animal Friends invites you to It’s Hip to be Tipped, an educational celebration of community cats on Fri., Oct. 14. You’ll receive plenty of information about being a community cat caregiver including trapping tips, how to make a cozy winter cat house and even how to successfully transform a feral kitten into a lovable and adoptable friend! By the time you leave, you’ll have the information you need to get to work helping community cats in your area. And, if that’s not enough, guests will leave with free cat food and straw – while supplies last. Visit ThinkingOutsideTheCage.org/Events for details.

CHloe

PatcHes Tee Tee is an older Boxer mix who still has plenty of energy and loves to play! This boy enjoys going for walks, so he would love to find an active family. Because he’s a high-energy guy, Tee would do best in a home with children 6 years or older. Give Tee a chance to show off his great manners and he’ll gladly be your co-pilot on the next road trip!

APacHe

SeNeca Seneca is a handsome Collie mix who was rescued by our Humane Police Officers. He had spent his entire life living outside and hadn’t interacted much with humans before coming to Animal Friends. Over time, he has learned to love people and is ready for a family to call his own. Seneca would love to meet his future family soon, so come see him today!

4

Patches is a sweet little lady who needs a loving home. She’s been trying to shed a couple pounds before winter, so having a family who will help her exercise would be a perfect fit! She’s very friendly with people and dogs alike and would be a great addition to a family with children of all ages. Whether out walking or cuddling on the couch, Patches would love to be your new best friend.

Looking for the perfect companion for your next outdoor adventure? Apache is a handsome Lab mix who enjoys long walks and loves to swim! Because he’s a young dog, Apache is still working on some of his manners, but is well on his way to being a great dog – he just needs the right guidance. If Apache sounds like the one for you, come and meet your future outdoor buddy today!

Chloe’s mix of Shepherd and Alaskan Husky has given her a beautiful black and tan coat. She is a sweet, calm girl who is looking for an adult companion. Chloe may prefer a female adopter because she is timid around men. But, she is working hard to build this confidence. She gets along well with other dogs and wouldn’t mind sharing a person! This sweet girl is just looking for a best friend to help her enjoy her golden years.

Marie Marie has been with Animal Friends for far too long. This special girl was rescued after being abandoned outside without food or water. Thankfully, she has long since regained her health and is now as spunky and enthusiastic as ever! Because of her lively play style, Marie should go to a home with children 12 years or older and without cats, but she certainly wouldn’t mind having another canine family member to burn some of that energy with!

Can you or someone you know provide a loving home for one of our animals? Visit ThinkingOutsideTheCage.org/Animals to give a pet a second chance!

koala

TallulaH This ravishing American Bulldog is Tallulah. She is a very social girl who loves the company of people. Tallulah is still learning the finer points of sharing, so she will do best in a family with children 10 years or older who can be patient and understanding with her. As much as she loves people, Tallulah doesn’t care much for other dogs, so she would prefer to be the only dog in your home … don’t worry she has plenty of love to give!

Koala is a friendly and affectionate girl who loves playtime. She’s a strong dog who is hoping to find an owner who has had experience with Rottweilers. The perfect home for Koala would be adult-only and without cats or other dogs. She wants all of your attention for herself! Koala just needs someone with a big heart to give her a second chance.

Beau This beau-tiful Treeing Walker Coonhound is Beau! His friends will tell you that his true love is food, but he enjoys working off those meals with some rambunctious play sessions. Beau has a ton of energy so he would be best-suited for a home with children 12 and older. If you’re searching for a well-trained and active pup, stop by Animal Friends to meet this good-looking guy today!

PaRNey

JaDa Jada is a gentle dog who would be comfortable going to a home with children of all ages. She has plenty of energy and looks forward to playtime but also loves to show off her “sit!” This beautiful girl wants to be the only pet in your life and would prefer not to go home with cats or other dogs. Stop in to see this amazing pup for yourself and you may just go home with your new best friend!

Parney is a beautiful 9-year-old Border Collie looking for a patient family that can give her lots of love. Meeting new people can be scary for her, so she needs a little time and some yummy treats to help her warm up. Once she’s comfortable, you’ll see what a sweetheart she is. Because of her timid nature, Parney needs a home without cats or children who are younger than 12. Don’t let her age fool you, this girl loves to play and would welcome a family that enjoys outdoor activities!

SaxoN Saxon is a very dapper boy with his smooth brown and black fur. He was rescued from a hoarding situation and is shy and a little fearful because he has had minimal interaction with people. He has worked hard to learn to trust and is now looking for a home with an older canine companion who can help show him the ropes. While he would prefer to go to a home with children 12 and older, he will be a great companion for the right family – could it be yours?

Twitch

Patton anD Holt Patton and Holt are a bonded pair who will need to go home together. These best friends complement each other perfectly – Holt is the sweet and shy one while Patton plays the role of protector, always looking out for his brother. Both of these young boys are social and active, always hopping around looking for their next adventure. When you meet these two, you’ll quickly see that they are inseparable. Keeping Patton and Holt together will help them grow and allow their unique personalities to really shine! If you bring these fun-loving guys home, you’ll be sure to get twice the love and twice the fun!

Twitch is a robust bunny with a gorgeous, headturning black coat. This big guy doesn’t care to be picked up. But he’ll gladly snuggle up next to you, especially if you’ve got a handful of treats – his personal favorites are dandelions and dehydrated bananas! If you’re looking to add a great rabbit to your family, come see why Twitch is a fan-favorite at Animal Friends!

Continued from cover.

These dogs and puppies are overlooked because of the stereotypes that are associated with their breed. This is often times why Pit Bulls are one of the most prevalent breeds in shelters across the country. And tragically, many of them are never given a chance simply for that reason. Take Marie (bio on page 4) for example. She’s been waiting for a home for more than two years. Through no fault of her own, she was abandoned by her former owner and ended up at Animal Friends. Since she’s been a resident, we’ve gotten to know Marie as the incredibly sweet, intelligent and spunky pup that she is today. We don’t see Marie as just a Pit Bull but rather we see her as the wonderful dog that she is. We’ll stay committed to finding Marie – and our other Pit Bulls – a loving home. And if that means breaking down myths and stereotypes about Pit Bulls then so be it. But we can’t do it alone. We need your help to make a change. Learn more at ChangeTheTail.org.

Animal Friends University testimonial:

Angelo was adopted from Animal Friends in July 2015. At first he was extremely shy and fearful of people, but through Animal Friends University, Angelo is coming out of his shell and becoming a shining star.

10

“I remember one class in particular tha t Angelo actually jumped into the arms of one of the men and cov ered his face in kisses. This was a dog who used to shake unc ontrollably when he’d see a man approaching. That moment I rea lized that Angelo was making progress! The other people in the class were so supportive and understanding of him. All of the inst ructors have been phenomenal – they’re all so kind and knowledgeable. When something isn’t working, they always hav e great input and suggestions. I’ve learned so much from them. “We will shortly be taking another clas s at Animal Friends. Angelo and I both enjoy these classes so much. We’ve met so many nice dogs and great people. When I think of all the classes we’ve taken through Animal Friends Uni versity, I know that I’m giving Angelo a pretty fun life.” - Kathy Morrow

FeLine PURRSONALS

Petsburgh Press sponsorships are a great way to honor or say thanks to a friend or pet. If you would like to sponsor the adoption of an animal, please contact our Adoption Department at 412.847.7002.

Blackie Blackie is an older girl who wants to show you that age really is just a number. This lovable and energetic girl has the spunk of a kitten. She found her way to Animal Friends after being rescued as a stray and now this lucky girl wants to take full advantage of her second chance! Blackie absolutely loves people and is looking for the perfect family to help her enjoy her golden years.

PePPermint Aptly named, Peppermint’s frosty white coat makes him quite the catch! This affectionate boy is friendly with adults and children of all ages and even gets along with dogs – as long as they can respect his personal space. If you are looking for an outgoing cat who loves to nuzzle and is sometimes overtaken by uncontrollable purring, Peppermint might be the one you’re looking for!

CANDice This beautiful domestic shorthair is looking for a caring home. Candice is FIV+ which means that she copes with a slightly weakened immune system. Although she may require an extra visit to the vet every once in a while, nothing is stopping Candice from living a normal, healthy life. She just needs the right family to help her get started!

FoxTail

WHirlyBirD

Foxtail was rescued from a home where he had been living in a hoarding situation. Since coming to Animal Friends, he has become much more social and has learned how much he enjoys to play. This handsome young guy loves his toys but would love to find a family to share them with even more!

Whirlybird has bright green eyes that are sure to capture your heart. When she’s not intently tracking every dust bunny, shadow or curious sound she encounters, you can find Whirlybird curled up in a ball napping. Because she can be timid at times, Whirlybird wouldn’t be an ideal fit for a home with young children, but a loving family that doesn’t mind the occasional play session would be just right!

You can make a difference in our community and in the lives of our homeless pets by volunteering at Animal Friends. Visit ThinkingOutsideTheCage.org/Volunteer.

ZoRRo

CHA CHA This young, outgoing kitty is Cha Cha. At just over a year old, she is as playful as they come. And, she enjoys a good cat nap just as much as the next kitty! Cha Cha is ready to live a long and happy life where she can get all the love a caring family has to give. Come and meet Cha Cha today – she may just dance her way into your heart!

Zorro was once a very shy guy, but is really starting to come out of his shell. He was rescued from a home where he was living with a large number of other cats, which causes him to be a bit hesitant around new people. Zorro would benefit from another cat to show him the ropes and help him continue to learn to trust people. This sweet guy is patiently waiting for the right family to scoop him up!

Kit Kat

DoLi

Kit Kat is a senior cat who takes her playtime very seriously. Give this girl one of her favorite toys and she’ll keep you entertained for hours. When she’s not showing off her playful personality, this cutie is also the perfect lap cat. Kit Kat doesn’t care much for the company of other cats, but that’s just because she wants you all to herself!

Doli is a cute orange tabby with big beautiful eyes that are sure to grab your attention. After being rescued by our Humane Police Officers from a house with dozens of other cats, she’s looking for a quiet and calm household. Doli is a friendly cat who is becoming more social each day. Stop by and meet Doli to see if she’s the right companion for you.

NecTar If you are looking to add another feline friend to your family, Nectar could be your guy! He is currently living in one of our free-roam rooms and is very friendly with his kitty roommates. This attractive Tabby will chase toys all day long, but isn’t opposed to curling up on a lap for a good snuggle. Take the time to show Nectar some love and he will return the favor ten times over!

GoDric This handsome white and gray tabby was found as a stray by a Good Samaritan. He was a bit underweight when we first met him, but he is working to regain his size. Godric is a great kitty who does very well with his litterbox and absolutely loves to be petted – as long as it is on his terms. As he continues to be more comfortable with people, Godric is ready to take the next step and become a lovable house cat!

You can help pet owners in financial crisis through our Chow Wagon Program. Drop off unopened, dry and canned pet food at Animal Friends.

By Jenn Geibel, Retail Coordinator If you haven’t heard by now, the presidential election is upon us! Certainly you cannot miss the campaign signs in neighboring yards, political ads infiltrating your favorite television programs and the constant water cooler chatter about building walls and email scandals. It is likely that by now, you’ve already made up your mind as to who you are going to vote for (if you will be voting at all, that is), but have you stopped to ask your furry friends which political candidate they’re supporting? This year, let your pet have a voice in the election with one of Fuzzu’s Presidential Parody Pet Toys! These 17-inch canvas dog toys feature triple-

stitching for durability and a squeaker in the body for hours of political jabber and fun. Bring your dog into our Retail Store and let him get a feel for the 2016 presidential lineup. Amongst the candidates, we have: The Bernie toy, features wild hair, rolled-up sleeves and an array of political buttons. Your furry friend will undoubtedly be “feeling the Bern” after a lengthy chew session. With your vote, your pet will be ready for the revolution! The Donald toy is stylin’ with his golden tan, plush comb-over and flashy dollar sign socks. His well-heeled foot will inevitably end up in your pet’s mouth. With your vote, your pet will “make America great again”! The Hillary toy is the heat to beat with her red pantsuit ablaze and her fiery gaze fixed on the

Oval Office. Fling her into the ring and watch the fur fly. With your vote, she and your pet will “be stronger together”! And finally, if you would prefer to remain neutral this election season, forget the candidates and show your patriotic pride by picking up a selection of our smallbatch, all-American Pawtriotic Dog Treats. Choose from four all-American flavors including apple and pumpkin pie, and rest assured knowing that your pooch will be indulging in the best all-natural, limitedingredient treats on the market. If you think the political fun stops there, think again. Stop into Animal Friends’ Retail store to check out the rest of our election season lineup featuring bandanas, candidate costumes, plush toys, dog cookies and more!

Desi

Positive Thinking

For Little Bear and me, good fortune had struck. Not only has Desi’s integration into our home been seamless, but she and Little Bear have quickly become best friends. To Little Bear, the best bed is one with another cat in it and lucky for him, she has the same sentiment. Now, Desi livens up my days with her beautiful soprano voice, chirping and trilling when she has something to say. She’s fascinated by TV, and like me, enjoys binge-watching sci-fi shows. As I write this, Little Bear is snoozing on the desk and Desi is inspecting my office supplies – yes, as a matter of fact I do store my pens on the floor.

By Carol Concelman, Desi’s adopter Sadly, in April and May of this year I lost two dear friends, Andy and Sully. They had lived long, relatively healthy lives, which was especially wonderful because they were each affected with feline immunodeficiency virus (FIV). Cats that have FIV cope with a slightly weakened immune system. Because of this, they are more susceptible to certain illnesses and infections, but many of these ailments are very treatable. After Andy and Sully had passed away, I found myself with my one remaining cat, Little Bear, who also has FIV. Since he is a very social cat, I was worried about Little Bear being alone. Fortunately, the Saturday after we said goodbye to Sully was a gloomy, rainy day – perfect for finding a new feline companion to adopt. I visited Animal Friends and met with two

16

adoption counselors and let them know that I was looking for another FIV cat that would get along with Little Bear. We spent some time getting to know some of the cats in the free-roam room where the FIV+ residents live. And, I fell in love with a pretty black and tan Tabby. I adopted her and she is now known as Desi.

So why do I adopt cats who have FIV? Because for the most part they’re perfectly normal cats and with proper care, they can lead happy, healthy lives. These cats are often overlooked by adopters, because of health concerns. But I’ve learned from working with them (and adopting four of my own) that outwardly, FIV+ cats are really no different than any other cat – and they have just as much love (maybe even more!) to give.
