Breaking Mews

Dear Friend,

If you’ve been to the Animal Friends campus lately, you have undoubtedly noticed there is something new and exciting going on – perhaps the cranes, dump trucks and bulldozers gave it away! Yes, construction on our new Howard Ash Animal Wellness Center is underway and making great progress thanks to the hard work of our construction team along with an extra dose of nice weather compliments of Mother Nature.

The Howard Ash Animal Wellness Center, with an expected grand opening of early 2017, is designed to become a life-changing and lifesaving destination for hundreds of thousands of animals – and the people who love them. It is the embodiment of our commitment to do better for the pets who are struggling most in our region. All too often we see pets relinquished to Animal Friends simply because their owners couldn’t afford basic vet care or food. We receive call after call about stray and community cats who are relegated to a life on the streets fending for themselves and continually adding to the pet overpopulation problem. Or sadly, our Humane Police Officers are called to rescue pets who have become victims of neglect and abandonment because their owners didn’t know where to turn for help.

We believe affordable and accessible resources are the answer. And, that’s just what our new Animal Wellness Center will provide. With this progressive 18,400-square foot facility, we will be able to increase our commitment to affordable spay/neuter from 10,000 surgeries each year to 15,000 surgeries. We will reach into underserved communities to provide spay/neuter and wellness Howard Ash services along with education and, when needed, transport to our clinic. Our heavily demanded Chow Wagon Pet Food Bank will benefit from a storage and drop-off/pick-up area to ensure donated food And, our Humane Investigations is quickly distributed to the regional food pantries where it is needed most. , case management and review storage e evidenc for need tely Department will have the space they so despera our officers updated on cases keep who staff trative adminis our for areas and animal holding as well as work and community needs. lower level, the floor has been The Howard Ash Animal Wellness Center is beginning to take shape! But My Cat Stays Inside Why Even Indoor Cats Should be Vaccinated and Microchipped By Melanie Lippert , Low-Cost Spay/Neuter Lead Program Assistant While cats that are kept inside live longer and healthier lives than their outdoor counterparts they’re still at risk for contracting various diseases as well as slipping outside and becoming lost. Many states, including Pennsylvania, have laws requiring all dogs and cats to have current rabies vaccinations. Rabies is fatal and it only takes one incident with an infected animal to spread this devastating disease. Another important vaccination for indoor cats is FVRCP which protects against feline rhinotrachetitis virus, calicivirus and panleukopenia. These viruses can cause chronic respiratory issues, painful mouth sores and intestinal and immune system issues – and can sometimes be fatal. These can be brought into the home by people or animals and transmitted to your cat. Identification is often overlooked for indoor cats. While most cats are content to stay indoors, a strange noise, enticing bug or an open door can tempt them outdoors. Unfortunately, many indoor cats can’t find their way home once they’ve slipped out. A microchip is a permanent form of identification that will never fade or get lost. One study found that 38% of lost cats with microchips were returned home. Sadly, less than 2% of cats without a microchip were reunited with their owners. Vaccinating is smarter, safer and less expensive than treatment. And, microchipping could quite literally save your cat’s life. Vaccinating and microchipping your cat are small steps that can significantly improve the life of your cat! Animal Friends offers Low-Cost Vaccine and Microchip Clinics throughout the year. Visit ThinkingOutsideTheCage.org/Vaccine for dates and times.

GeNeral TaBBy Tabby is looking for a very active family to keep her on the move. Because of her high energy level, she’ll need to go home with children who are at least 14. She’s a super playful girl. In fact, playing with her is a great way to help her come out of her shell. Tabby can startle easily when outside but she’s more relaxed inside, which probably means she will make a great couch buddy! Tabby is sending licks and kisses to Mr. James Barva for his donation “for Harley and Winter.”

GooBer Goober is a sweet little guy with a silly personality to match his name! Fondly called Goofy Goober, this friendly guy loves to play. Goober becomes startled with loud noises, so he is looking for a home with children who are at least 10 years old. Although he can be shy at first, Goober quickly warms up and has yet to meet a human he hasn’t grown to love!

4

SeRena

General is a handsome Shepherd mix who can be somewhat independent and aloof when it comes to new people. He’ll need a patient family, but once he gets to know you, he is incredibly playful and sweet! He doesn’t do well with children but may be able to live with another dog to help him acclimate to his new home. General is wagging his tail over Mr. Rich Blattenberger and Melissa Emma Gosden’s generous donation.

Serena came to Animal Friends with a group of dogs that was rescued from a hoarding situation thanks to our Humane Investigations Department. She had an injured eye that needed to be removed. Once this was taken care of, this sweet girl started to come out of her shell. She can be shy at first but very much enjoys attention and people. Serena needs a patient home where she can learn to give and receive lots of love. Serena gives barks of appreciation to Ms. Paula Schaukowitch for her donation “in honor of Leonid.”

RuBy

sTaN

Ruby is a gorgeous brindle Hound mix. She can be nervous and a little shy, but given time she does warm up nicely to new people. We’re recommending that Ruby go to an adult-only home because of her nervousness with new people. She walks well and is an easy-going dog. We know this gem of a pup is sure to steal your heart, so stop by to meet her soon! Ruby says thank you to Mr. Henry Platts and Ms. Sherrill Shepler for their gift to Animal Friends.

This stunningly handsome boy is Stan, who came from a hoarding situation. Because of his background, Stan is initially very fearful of new people, noises and surroundings, but we’ve been socializing him with new people and acclimating him to indoor living. Stan needs a patient, understanding, adult-only home where he’ll be the only pet. Once comfortable, Stan loves to play, go on walks and take car rides! Open your home to this sweet boy today! Stan sends a woof of thanks to Ms. Lisa Moore for her donation.

Can you or someone you know provide a loving home for one of our animals? Visit ThinkingOutsideTheCage.org/Animals to give a pet a second chance!

Felix Mr. SeBastian Mr. Sebastian is a regal Boxer mix with a great smile and an ever-wagging tail. This great dog really enjoys playing with his toys, especially ones with squeakers! He’s not fond of being handled so he’d do best in a home with children at least 12 years old who can respect his space. While he can’t live with cats, Mr. Sebastian would be open to sharing a home with other dogs! Mr. Sebastian would like to thank Ms. Amy Adams for her donation “in loving memory of Scout.”

Felix arrived at Animal Friends in April of 2015. While he’s been with us he’s shown how sweet and loving he truly is. He adores people but needs a home with kids older than 8 years of age because he can be a bit rambunctious when he plays. Felix is an excellent copilot on car rides and is a wonderful officemate. While he cannot live with other animals he would be wonderful with the right human – could it be you?

Bonnie Bonnie is a friendly and social girl who absolutely loves to play tug of war and has an adorable wiggle. Since she is so friendly, Bonnie can be a bit much for young children and would do best in a family whose members are older than 8. If you have room in your home for a sweet dog with equal parts playful and cuddly, Bonnie is your girl! Bonnie is so grateful to Ms. Elaine GermontGavette for her donation “in honor of Jello.”

FREDDY Freddy is a sweetheart who’s old enough to know what he likes! He’s a very experienced walker and really enjoys the company of people. Although he’s quite social and friendly, Freddy will need to go to a home with children 12 and older and no other dogs, as he tends to be protective of his people. Freddy is a mature little guy who absolutely adores squeaky toys and is ready to show you how playful he still is! Freddy extends his thanks to Ms. Joyce Waltner-Barmak for her donation “in memory of Fluffy Waltner, beloved dog.”

DeNIm Denim is a beautiful brindle bundle of energy! He loves people and is happy to give kisses and hugs. At times, he can be overly enthusiastic, so he would do best in a family with children older than 12. Denim would prefer a home without cats. He does like dogs but can be choosy about playmates. He is the epitome of a friendly, active boy who loves to play indoors and out.

Boo Boo is a petite young Lionhead rabbit who is simply too cute! When she first got to Animal Friends she was shy and fearful but she has since gained some confidence and is much more comfortable with people and her surroundings! You can see Boo shine at one of our BunRuns or Bunny Yoga classes!

6

Allyse

Buck

Allyse is a lovely Dutch who came to Animal Friends from a home with many rabbits, so you can be sure that she enjoys the company of other bunnies a great deal! Allyse is a bit reserved at first, but with more socialization she’ll warm up to the people she is around. Although normally calm and relaxed, she’s been known to bound about and play with toys!

This beautiful rabbit is Buck. He’s a robust bunny with a wonderfully sassy attitude to match! He enjoys the company of other bunnies but can sometimes be overwhelming for shyer buns. He has a fun personality and an adorable bounce! Buck is so laid back and delightful – if there is such a thing as a perfect bunny, he’s it!

Give your pup a chance to meet some new buds! At Animal Friends’ Canine Socials, your dog can let out his or her inner social butterfly!

A Tribute to a Dear Friend

Joanna’s compassion, kindness and dedication were just a few of her admirable qualities. She selflessly devoted so much of her time to volunteer, often using vacation days from work to give back to those in the community that needed it most.

By Lauren Rimkus If you’re familiar with Animal Friends’ pet therapy program, Therapets, you may have crossed paths with one of our dedicated volunteers, Joanna Shaw, and her cherished therapy Beagle, Summer. But it is with a heavy heart that we must tell you, our dear friend Joanna has passed away. Joanna and Summer were part of Animal Friends’ very first graduating class of Therapets certified therapy teams. They quickly became one of the most active Therapets teams and rarely turned down an opportunity to make a positive impact. From schools and libraries to hospitals and nursing homes, we could always count

With Muttster Mash (see above for details) right around the corner – and in need of a mascot – we thought who would be better to fill that role than Joanna’s beloved Summer (who has since been placed with a new loving family – complete with canine sister!). Summer will not only become the face of the event but will be in attendance as a tribute to Joanna.

What Joanna did as an Animal Friends’ volunteer was truly invaluable to our region. Together, with Summer, countless smiles were brought to thousands of faces. We had to do something to honor Joanna’s commitment to Animal Friends and our community …

Know someone that could benefit from some pet therapy? Call 412.847.7026 to schedule a visit with a Therapets team.

We know Joanna will be with us in spirit and we cannot thank her enough for everything she’s done in her time at Animal Friends. Simply put, she is greatly missed. If you would like to run or walk in honor of a loved one at Muttster Mash, visit ThinkingOutsideTheCage.org/ MuttsterMash to register and form your fundraising team!

Wonka Mr. SnuGGles

CAsPer

Mr. Snuggles is just about as cute as they come and aptly named! He was brought to Animal Friends because of litterbox issues but has been doing really well as of late! He’s friendly and social and loves to play. He loves to snuggle! Give this charming boy a mouse toy to play with and you’ll both be endlessly entertained. Mr. Snuggles would like to thank Mr. Robin Hetzell and Mrs. Judith Hetzell for their donation to Animal Friends.

Wonka is a handsome gray tabby with a wonderful personality. He gets along very well with others and would have no problem going to a home with other cats. Wonka is FIV+ which means his immune system is weaker than most other cats, but with a little extra veterinary attention from time to time he still lives a perfectly happy and healthy life! If you have a cozy home with a window to watch the birds, Wonka would love to join your family. Wonka thanks Ms. Rebecca Zvolenski for her generous contribution.

Casper is a reserved cat who has had a difficult time finding a new home. He has some vision impairment, but he still manages to get around well. He responds well to voices and will roll over when he craves some attention! This beautiful white cat is a sweet boy who just needs a chance to melt your heart. Casper sends lots of cuddles to Ms. Bernice Yokim for her gift.

MaGic Magic was found by one of our volunteers. She’s a very sweet and social kitty who absolutely loves to have her ears scratched. Magic is extremely friendly and comfortable with people and would be the perfect family cat. She is ready to go home with a new family so she can show her sweet and sensitive side. Magic is purring over Ms. Selma Kowalski’s donation “in honor of Cookie, Lady, Ciffon, Pepper and Fancy.”

Aileen This darling girl is a wonderful cat! She was returned to Animal Friends because of litterbox issues, but a full exam showed that she was stressed by the environment in her former home. Aileen would be happiest as the only cat in her home and she loves people! All she wants is a second chance at a loving home! Aileen sends a grateful headbutt to Mr. Ernest Watt and Mrs. Della Watt for their donation “for [our two beloved cats] we miss so much.”

You can make a difference in our community and in the lives of our homeless pets by volunteering at Animal Friends. Visit ThinkingOutsideTheCage.org/Volunteer.

MeaDow This longhaired beauty is Meadow. She came to Animal Friends after being found as a stray. While she can be shy at first, Meadow warms up quickly and can be a real sweetheart. She has an increased risk of developing feline diabetes, but a special low-fat diet easily keeps her happy and healthy. Come and meet this sweet cat today! Meadow thanks Herman Fry for his generous donation.

Freckles

Peter Pan

Freckles is a big girl and an even bigger character! Although she has lived with other animals in the past, she seems to have gotten used to the single life and would prefer her privacy. This sweet cat can be a little shy at first but once she is comfortable she turns into a very active girl. If you’re interested in the perfect mix of a cuddle bug and a playmate, Freckles might be the cat for you!

Once he gets to know you, Peter Pan is friendly and affectionate! He is a laid-back kitty who loves one-on-one time with his humans. While he doesn’t care much for the company of other cats and is fearful of dogs, he does love people. Peter Pan is a sweet boy who is ready to get plenty of human attention from a loving new family! Peter Pan sends lots of nuzzles to Ms. Gloria Spratt as a thank you for her gift.

SeBastiaN anD FlouNDer Flounder and Sebastian came to Animal Friends after they were found together. These boys are very friendly and are fairly large – which means there’s more to love! Flounder has chronic dry eye but that doesn’t hold him back as it is easily treated with regular eye medication. Sebastian deals with some dental problems, but nothing that isn’t manageable. These two sweethearts are looking for a loving home where they can spend their lives together forever! Sebastian and Flounder give meows of appreciation to Dr. Jeff Gryn and Dr. Emily Grum for their donation.

StaNley Stanley is our resident ‘fat cat’ and we love him for it! At a whopping 20 pounds, Stanley has a lot of love to give! Staff and volunteers have witnessed his goofball personality firsthand. Stanley loves being gently petted but is initially shy with strangers and hides from dogs. Once he gets to know you he will plop down right beside you and beg for attention. What a ham!

You can help pet owners in financial crisis through our Chow Wagon Program. Drop off unopened, dry and canned pet food at Animal Friends.

Ah…summer! Warm days, cold drinks, long hikes – the glorious summer season is upon us! Battling the summer heat can be enough of a challenge for humans, but pets have an added layer of fur to deal with. And while we may have the option of taking a dip in the pool or escaping to an air-conditioned venue, our pets often don’t. That’s why here at Animal Friends we carry products that are designed to keep pets cool and happy through warm summer days.

Frozen Dog Delights for Warm Summer Nights! After a long walk in the woods or a day of gardening in the blistering heat, you and your dog deserve a treat that will really hit the spot. For you, this may mean a trip to your favorite ice cream parlor or fro-yo joint. And why not let your dog enjoy the same? Puppy Scoops ice cream is the perfect treat

to cool down your hot hound after an extended day in the sun. Just add hot tap water to this powdered mix, stir and freeze for a smooth and creamy treat your pup won’t be able to resist! Puppy Scoops are a grain-free, lactosefree treat that comes in four mouthwatering flavors: carob, vanilla, maple bacon and peanut butter.

A Cool Scratching Post that Will Keep Your Cat Engrossed! We all know that our cats would rather spend the day lounging in front of the fan or relaxing in an air-conditioned apartment, right? Well, we have just the thing! The Ultimate Cat Scratcher Lounge offers your cat a comfortable place to rest and scratch at the same time. This reversible scratcher is large enough to hold multiple cats and features a unique curved design for an easier, more stimulating scratching and stretching experience. cardboard scratching posts cannot match.

A Farmers Market Treat that Your Rabbit Will Love to Eat! Just in time for summer, we’ve restocked our supply of Oxbow Simple Rewards treats for rabbits. So while you are out shopping at the local farmers market for seasonal fruits, be sure to keep your rabbit in mind, and complement his diet with these healthy, freeze-dried fruits! All I Want for Christmas Is an Oreo By Jodi Lagoni, Oreo’s Adopter Such a sweet story came to us about a young lady named Lexi who wanted nothing more than for Santa to bring her a bunny for Christmas. We asked Lexi’s mother Jodi to help us share this wonderfully “happy tail.” “A couple of years ago, my daughter Lexi asked me if she could adopt a bunny. At the time, I thought it was just a phase, so I didn’t think much of it. Then, last summer when I asked Lexi what she would like for Christmas, she answered that she still wanted to have her very own bunny. As the months rolled by, the number one gift on her Christmas list remained the same.

16

“I was unsure about adopting a rabbit, especially since we already had two pets, our dog Bella and our cat Fred. Lexi was very persistent though, reminding me every opportunity she got that she wanted a bunny for Christmas. Finally, I told her that Santa would only bring her a bunny if her parents approved, so we made a trip to Animal Friends to meet the adoptable rabbit residents. “When we got there, we met with a wonderful adoption counselor named Erica. She was so helpful! As Erica began to introduce us to the adoptable rabbits,

we came to one named Oreo. Lexi fell in love with him instantly, and Erica and I could see the connection! While I was growing up, I had a rabbit that I loved dearly and after seeing the immediate bond between Lexi and Oreo, I decided that I wanted my daughter to experience the same joy that my sisters and I had with our bunny. “Our visit to Animal Friends was enough to convince me that Lexi was ready for the responsibility of pet ownership and since it was obvious that she wanted nothing more than a bunny – in particular Oreo – I gave Santa permission to bring Lexi the one thing she wanted more than anything for Christmas. I kept this small piece of information from her to be sure that she would be surprised! “Erica helped me coordinate everything and on Christmas morning, Santa successfully delivered our newest family member, Oreo. The decision to surprise Lexi with a rabbit that she had hand-picked is one that I am so glad to have made! She loves Oreo more than anything and has learned so much and grown into a very dedicated young pet owner. And, Oreo has been a wonderful addition to our family.”
