The best kind of day at Animal Friends is a day when a long-term resident goes home. Procedurally, there is nothing to distinguish these adoptions from any other. A family visits us, our adoption counselors work their magic and that family leaves with more fur than they came in with. But emotionally, the mix of joy, relief and a touch of sadness make these adoptions feel so much more special. Gia Marie and Gulliver Gia and Gulliver, two lovely Pit Bull mixes, were confiscated from a terrible situation on Aug. 3, 2012. They were adopted by a wonderful family on Sept. 21, 2014 – that’s a total of

779 days! For those 779 days, they overcame behavioral and medical issues with the help of our staff and volunteers. And when they finally found that perfect family, our volunteers threw their new parents a going-home party. Gia and Gully’s new parents keep their fan base updated on their antics through their Facebook page.
Paul A white, Californian bun, Paul, had a tough time finding a forever home. With beautiful, white fur and striking pink eyes, we think some may have been taken aback by his looks. Paul spent nearly a year and a half with us at Animal Friends, waiting for just the right people to take him home. It was a very happy day when Paul (renamed Jeckyll) hopped through our front door, new family in tow.
Steven Foster Steven Foster, an 11-year-old Domestic Shorthaired feline, was originally adopted from Animal Friends as a kitten. He came back to us in February of 2013. Our volunteers worked diligently to help him to overcome his fears of people and new places. This past October, we were visited by a couple with a specific request: to see the cats who had been with us the longest. They chose Steven and he has been quite happy in his home ever since.
Paul The holiday season is full of activity; attending parties, shopping, decorating and running around. Sometimes, it can be difficult to focus on what really matters most – family – this time of year. Our long-time shelter residents are still waiting (impatiently at that!) for their families to meet them. And please, adopt – don’t shop – this holiday season and open your hearts to an animal who needs you.

With the holidays in full swing, we’re really getting into the spirit here at Animal Friends – even our residents have been barking, meowing and hopping along to the melody of “Jingle Bells” lately (kidding of course!). This really is a wonderful time of year at the shelter. We’re witness to so much love and compassion. And it’s just that much sweeter when a family finds their new member and takes him or her out of our care and into their home forever. These families are the perfect embodiment of hope during this magical time of year. While we’d love for every family to be able to adopt one of our merry pets, we know that’s not always possible. So here are other ways to support our animals: • Underwrite an adoption Consider underwriting an adoption fee. That hopper, feline or pooch will be forever grateful as you’ll make their adoption truly priceless. • Stuff our residents’ stockings Our shelter pets have a wish list just like anyone else! They have a list of items that they love and use each day. By donating specific items that our residents need it enables us to use monetary donations on quality care and services. • Become a little helper We can always use volunteers. If you want to work with the animals you can choose the species that appeal to you most – or all of them! We have plenty of other areas that could use your help as well. From data entry to greeting visitors to helping with special events, there’s a niche that fits every interest.

Keep your pets healthy and safe by updating their vaccines. Every month, the Low-Cost Spay/ Neuter program at Animal Friends offers low-cost vaccine clinics. This perky-eared, wide-eyed senior is the perfect low-maintenance companion. Ginger is a sweet gal who just enjoys being cuddled. Ginger relishes leisurely strolls on shelter trails. Be careful though. Because of her coloring and petite stature, she can easily become lost in piles of autumn leaves! This gentle soul is looking for a home in which she can spend her golden years. Ideally, her forever family would consist of children older than eight. Because Ginger enjoys playing with other small dogs, she may also welcome a canine sibling. She, however, prefers a home without cats.
This energetic, young Terrier mix is sure to make a great family dog. Gage is a friendly, wiggly guy who loves to play and go on walks. Gage would make a great companion animal for an active family who is willing to work with him and make sure he learns the behaviors he needs to be a great canine citizen. This endearing senior has so much going for him! Sushi exudes a spirit of gentleness and calmness. He will happily sit or give paw in hopes of an affectionate pat on the head. Sushi’s exercise requirements are minimal—his jogging days are behind him, but he does find leisurely strolls appealing! Zoe Sweet, shy Zoe was a well-loved pet whose owner passed away. She does best when she can approach people on her own terms, and she would grow to trust and love the people who gave her the space to do so. This gentle senior never expected to find himself at a shelter. Kudzu was abandoned by his family and brought to Animal Friends. This loving, laid-back guy can only be described as the perfect companion. He enjoys leisurely walks and playing with stuffed toys. The excitement of preparing for the arrival of a baby should not be dampened by concerns about your pets’ reactions. With some planning, preparation and training, introducing your newest family member to your pet can be very successful and rewarding. The Baby-Ready Pets! This class will teach you the life-saving skills and knowledge that will enable you to be there for your pets when they need you the most! Class size limited to 15 students to allow for individualized instruction. Certification provided upon completion of the class. AF 122 Canine Courage For families whose child is afraid of dogs To assist families whose child is afraid of dogs, Animal Friends will provide a meeting space and a child-friendly therapy dog accompanied by the dog’s handler. The family will provide a therapist who will co-teach the sessions with Animal Friends’ Education Coordinator. Parents should contact their child’s pediatrician who may be able to recommend a therapist to work with the family. It will be the family’s financial responsibility to pay the therapist for his/her time. AF 125 Dogs 101 For kids age 5+ and their grown-ups Children and dogs can be best buddies, with a relationship based on mutual respect and communication. Families with dogs or who are considering adopting a dog are encouraged to attend this class. Interact with a kid-friendly dog and learn how to tell when a dog is annoyed, happy, nervous, ready to play or ready to chase. Learn what to do when your dog jumps on you, what games are okay to play with dogs and when your dog needs privacy. Workshop for Boy Scouts

Instructor: Dana Schultz, Merit Badge Counselor Date: Saturday, January 31 TIME: 10:15 am – 2:15 pm TUITION: $25 per scout RESERVATION DEADLINE: Tuesday, January 27 by 5 pm AF 131 Pets and Vets For students in grades 2-5 Kids who are thinking that they might like to be a veterinarian when they grow up are invited to attend. The lesson will include an overview of the use of the stethoscope and other veterinary equipment, basic anatomy, and the pet exam. It will also include how to safely greet a dog and practice with a humane education visiting dog and his/her handler. Enrollment is limited to eight students.

Veterinary Career?
For students in grades 6-9 Animal Friends’ veterinarian and veterinary technician will present an overview of veterinary careers and their work at Animal Friends. We’ll explore schooling options, the how and why of our residents’ initial physical exams, and the importance of microchipping. Students will participate in analyzing x-rays and testing blood for heartworms. We’ll also provide a snack and a behind-the-scenes tour of the surgery suite. (Surgery will not be taking place during the tour.) This six week class will develop skills needed for you and your dog to conduct therapy dog visits to a variety of facilities including hospitals, nursing homes, residential treatment centers, hospices and more. Dogs should be people and dog friendly and have basic obedience training. We will build on those skills to develop a visiting team of dog and handler. Focus will be placed on team compatibility to ensure that dog and handler work well together. The class will include a visit with your dog to a local facility for a therapy visit. Do you love to draw? Love animals? Looking to get artsy on a cold winter’s day? It’s not too soon to start thinking about Animal Friends’ 2015 poster contest! Our poster contest, held annually in celebration of Be Kind to Animals Week, is for students in grades 1-8. This year’s theme is Pets are our Friends. In 2014 we received 255 posters, and our judges chose eight grade-level winners and 23 honorable mention winners. Want to check out the 2013 winning posters for inspiration?
