Promoting self-sufficiency...

OUR CHALLENGE

Imagine you can’t provide even the most basic needs for your family. Where do you turn?

The innocent victims of homelessness are children. 40% of Maryland’s homeless are families, and at least half of all the homeless children are under the age of five.

Since 1988, The Dwelling Place has provided housing and intensive case management to help families move toward self-sufficiency. We keep families together.

Homelessness in Montgomery County: ■ 1,123 people are homeless on any given day ■ 27% are children ■ 74% have disabilities ■ 34% work but can’t afford housing ■ You would have to work 160 hours per week at minimum wage to afford the basic costs of living in a fair-market rent two-bed room apartment

...through education, life skills and housing Getting families to stand on their own requires that we address the underlying causes of their homelessness. We work with families to develop and make progress toward individual goal plans specific to their situations and needs.

We provide the following to each of our families: Life Skills Education Academic Support for the Children

Individual Employment/ Education Counseling Intensive Case Management Services

We define success as a family’s return to independent living – with a job, a home, a support system, and a sense of self-respect and dignity.
