30th Anniversary Celebration Since 1988

November 3, 2018

Dear Friends: Thirty years ago a group of committed community leaders came together to discuss the growing number of homeless families. Gaithersburg was changing, and along with the growth came a new set of challenges, including people across different populations experiencing homelessness. The Lord’s Table at St. Martin of Tours Church had been providing hot meals to the homeless for five years, but there was a real concern when the three highchairs they used were no longer enough for the children they were helping. The secretary’s minutes from the first meeting show the group was ahead of its time in helping families get back on their feet and break the cycle of poverty—but that could not be done by just providing a roof over their heads—they needed more. The Dwelling Place was born from that meeting, and thanks to a $5,000 donation from Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, a plan was put in place. The organization was officially incorporated in November of 1988, and thirty years later, we are still going strong making a difference in the lives of families with children.

In Memory of

Miriam K. Gandell

It takes a village to do the work we do. Over the last three decades we have grown, downsized, and evolved. We have helped families find the strength needed to become self-sufficient by increasing their income, improving their financial literacy, and even completing their college degrees. Some of our families have become homeowners themselves. We share in their successes, the most important one being that our families did not return to homelessness.

our former Executive Director who was a champion of our cause and believed in the potential of each family.

We have experienced tremendous financial challenges over the last few years, but just like our families, we remain resilient and hopeful as we look toward future. We thank you for having been a part of this amazing journey, and for those new to The Dwelling Place family, we promise you will have a special place in our work. We ask for your continued support as we tackle funding challenges and as we continue to progress with families. Times have changed—but the issues they face have not. Montgomery County continues to be an expensive place to live but the opportunities and support systems here are unlike any other. We are proud to have served over 300 Montgomery County families and hope to be here until there are no more families experiencing homelessness in the area. One of our favorite quotes is from Margaret Mead, “Never doubt that small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world; indeed, it’s the only thing that ever has.” On behalf of the Board of Directors, the staff, and the families we serve we thank you for your support in changing the world for our families. Thank you for joining in our celebration this evening! Sincerely,

James Bond James Bond Board President
