The Reading area is home to an abundance of hidden gems. Alvernia University is in the heart of many adorable cafes, beautiful art, cultural establishments, and plenty of other spectacular local businesses. If you are a resident student at Alvernia, or even a commuter from farther away, you might be missing out on some extraordinary local businesses right off campus. To get more engaged with the surrounding area, check out these fantastic spots. The first business is Swerl Design LLC, located at 438 Penn Ave in West Reading, about eight minutes from main campus. Swerl Design is a home decor store with unique pieces created by one of thirteen different artists. One of these artists is Jason Eyer, who started Swerl design early last year with his brother in his basement. It began as a woodshop but eventually grew into the beautiful store it is today. When asked how Swerl Design compares to other stores like it, Eyer said, “I never seen a store similar to it before.” What makes Swerl Design so special is that if one object sells, a different piece will take its place. “If you come in here on a Wednesday and then come back on a Thursday, it’s probably different,” Eyer said. “It’s always different from day to day.” You can find a one-ofa-kind treasure every day at Swerl Design. Next up is Mi Casa Su Casa, located just down the road from CollegeTown at 320 Penn Street. Mi Casa Su Casa first opened in October of 2007 as a coffee shop. Since then, it has grown into a lovely restaurant as well as a community hub specializing in comfort, conversation, and the creative arts. Owner Johanny CepetaFreytiz’s goal was to create an environment where everyone felt welcome, she said, “Everyone who comes in is treated like family, like genuinely. It doesn’t matter your background, what you look like, if you have a little

bit of money or no money at all, we treat everybody with the utmost respect.” Cepeta-Freytiz has created a comforting spot that is far more than just a restaurant. “Not only do we fuel your tummy with great food, I like to say we also fuel your mind, body, and spirit,” she said. Wi-Fi is provided, and guests may stay for as long as they wish; Mi Casa Su Casa can truly be your home away from home. The staff of Mi Casa Su Casa is friendly, the atmosphere is joyful, and the food is delicious. The final business is Double Sunrise Yoga located on the same street as Swerl Design LLC at 398 Penn Ave. Double Sunrise is a simple yet stunning yoga studio that is open to anyone willing to participate. Founder, Kristina Schurr, has a passion for the wellbeing and mindfulness of herself and others. She chose to leave her job and work with her passions; just before the covid-19 shutdown Schurr opened Double Sunrise. There is a wide variety of classes offered at Double Sunrise by a group of women who all practice different approaches to mindfulness. Schurr said, “They are all passionate as to what they offer, and I am simply grateful to practice with them and to hold a space for them to share in it.” Double Sunrise provides a distinctive experience because of the sense of serenity and unity among all the chaos in the world. Scurr emphasized this belief saying, “The peaceful energy experienced as the world is going on outside and then to step right back into it differently, that is a unique gift.” Double Sunrise is the perfect place to stop by when you get stressed or overwhelmed with the world. Especially during midterms, take advantage of this place of serenity just minutes from campus. Take a trip off campus and explore these local businesses. No matter what you enjoy doing, there is something for you. There’s something for everyone!

2021’s Banned Book Week was celebrated from September 26 to October 2 across the United States. Banned Book Week is an annual event celebrating the freedom to read. Banned Book Week was started in 1982 as schools, libraries and bookstores started to see a sudden surge in challenges in books. Due to the country trying to restrict access on important books by beginning Banned Book Week it drew national attention to the harm of censorship. Censorship was created so that books that people felt offended by either by certain words or content could not be read by anyone anymore, even if these books are not offensive at all to a majority of people. Books can even be banned in school districts by school district officials, it is not as big as county, state or national, small things such as school districts can make these decisions for their student body based off their opinions on the books. Many books are challenged by community groups each year, often driven by cultural grievances of one sort or another disguised as concerns about adult content and adult situations. A popular book that many Alvernia students may have had to read in high school but gets challenged often is To

Students at colleges and universities across the United States are participating in the discussion and education of Banned Book Week. At Arizona State University’s Hayden Library, whiteboards were stationed with the big words BANNED BOOKS? The displays also featured a drawing of a book where students on the campus could write how they felt about banned books and ways that students felt that changes could be made. After seeing the student interaction on campus with such an important topic I think that Alvernia students should also have the same opportunities to share how they feel about important topics as well; I spoke with a student at The University of Arizona, Felice, and she said that the “ASU library is one of the best she has been in and seen.”

2021-22 NBA Season Preview And just like that another NBA season is upon us. All NBA players received a full and proper offseason this year unlike the 2020 offseason before due to COVID-19. All players should be well rested and ready to compete for the Larry O’Brien Trophy this season. At the end of the shortened season Giannis Antetokounmpo and the Milwaukee Bucks were holding up the franchise’s first championship trophy since 1971. For the most part the Bucks retained their core players except for starter, PJ Tucker who signed with Miami in the offseason. They did gain veteran help with the signings of George Hill and Rodney Hood. The reigning champs will have hopes to repeat this season. 2021 was a very active offseason for the association. The biggest move comes from the Los Angeles Lakers acquiring future Hall of Famer, Russell Westbrook. The tripledouble king teams up with LeBron James and Anthony Davis in hopes of winning his first championship. The Lakers also acquired Carmelo Anthony along with numerous other exceptional veterans all trying to achieve the same end goal. “You know, you look at that piece of paper and say, Lakers are loaded, automatic championship. Nah man, we got a lot of work to do in terms of just gelling, finding our rhythm and being able to be cohesive as a unit,” assistant coach Phil Handy said. Long time Toronto Raptor, Kyle Lowry, is headed to South Beach to pair up with all-stars Jimmy Butler and Bam Adebayo. Most NBA experts rated Miami’s offseason acquisitions among the top in the league. Lowry might be the missing piece for the Heat to seriously contend again. To keep going with the Eastern Conference team moves, the Washington Wizards acquired Spencer Dinwiddie from the Brooklyn Nets. Losing Westbrook may or may not be good in the long run, but they did acquire Kyle Kuzma, Montrezl Harrell and Kentavious CaldwellPope from the trade. The Chicago Bulls also

got a lot better with the acquisitions of Lonzo Ball, Demar Derozan and Alex Caruso. Zach Lavine will be very thankful for some serious help, as they also acquired Nikola Vucevic midseason from the Orlando Magic. They can make some noise this season with hopes of going deep into the playoffs with all the talent they now have. Guard Demar Derozan was excited about the new opportunity presented to him this offseason. “You could see what they were working toward, and it was something I wanted to be a part of. It wasn’t too much of a pitch that they had to make after that,” Derozan said. After making the playoffs for the first time since 2013 the New York Knicks improved this offseason. Kemba Walker looks to finally find a permanent home and return to his old self in the Big Apple. Evan Fournier also signed with the Knicks after his short stint in Boston. After a disappointing season the Boston Celtics looked to upgrading their roster. Al Horford is back after playing in Philadelphia and Oklahoma City. Veterans Dennis Schroder and Josh Richardson also are looking to make Boston top contenders in the East again. The Western Conference made quieter moves than the Eastern Conference except for the Lakers. Stephen Curry and the Golden State Warriors

are looking to compete again this season. All-Star Klay Thompson will return midseason after numerous leg injuries. Andre Iguodala returns to Golden State after his stint in Miami. The old Warrior culture may come back in the building and can get them back in contention. Iguodala spoke with The New York Times about returning to Golden State where he won three championships. “I think I’ve got some more time left. Where I’m comfortable at is I can decide when I’m ready to go. I think I want to leave with just a little bit left. I don’t want to go out on one leg,” Iguodala said. The Los Angeles Clippers made some moves after another lackluster playoff run. Eric Bledsoe returns to LA. Injury-prone Justise Winslow signed with the Clippers as well. He can be a valuable role player if he can stay healthy and has shown he can be a great player early in his career. In this year’s draft the Detroit Pistons selected Cade Cunningham out of Oklahoma State with the number one pick. The Pistons hope he can rejuvenate their franchise and get other players to come play with the young hopeful star. Jalen Green went number two to the Houston Rockets who have looked awful since the departure of James Harden. Center Evan Mobley went to the Cleveland Cavaliers who are stacking their roster with

big men. While talking to the media after getting drafted Cunningham had this to say “I love Detroit. I’ve already been listening to Detroit music and things like that way before the draft lottery or any of that stuff. I was already hip to the culture in Detroit,” said Cunningham. It looks like the Pistons drafted a dedicated young star. Other than the draft, trades and free agent signings NBA fans have had their share of drama to keep up with on a week to week basis. The biggest ongoing story comes out of Philadelphia. Point Guard Ben Simmons has been the center of NBA drama since the 76ers loss in the Semifinals versus the Atlanta Hawks. After passing up an easy dunk/layup Philly fans have been completely done with the 6’11” guard out of LSU. Simmons wants out of Philadelphia and there have been rumors of trades for years now. It does not look good for the 76ers organization or its fans trying to get rid of his massive contract, terrible attitude, and his stubbornness to not shoot the basketball. Many Sixers got asked questions relating to the Ben Simmons ordeal. “That’s still our brother, still our brother as well. So we hope the situation can get resolved. If it doesn’t, we move on, we get this thing going,” forward Tobias Harris said. The team does not like the ongoing

and constant questions being asked. Other recent news comes out of Brooklyn with All-Star Kyrie Irving refusing to get the COVID-19 vaccine. It is a New York law for players to be vaccinated in order to play in the state. This means if Irving does not receive the vaccine, he will not be able to play in the Nets’ 41 home games. The Toronto Raptors are another team that will not allow players to play unless they are vaccinated. “I am doing what’s best for me. I know the consequences here, and if it means that I’m judged and demonized for that, that’s just what it is,” Irving said. “That’s the role I play, but I never wanted to give up my passion, my love, my dream just over this mandate,” said Irving. Irving’s intransigence creates a huge dilemma for the Nets. They want one of their best players to play to reach the NBA Finals but that will be hard to do with one of their top three players. This is an ongoing story in the NBA as the season is approaching quickly. The NBA Season tips-off Tuesday October 19th. Kevin Durant and the Brooklyn Nets go to the reigning champ’s stadium to play the Milwaukee Bucks. After that game, Stephen Curry and the Warriors play LeBron James and the Lakers.

Mackenzie Coombs Managing Editor How does a team spend 103 days in first place and finish the season with a losing record? Coming into this season, there were high hopes and players that were going to be bright stars on the New York Mets. But injury after injury, and players underperforming, it seemed that the Mets were destined to fail. But luckily for the Mets, they had what they called “Bench Mob.” These were secondary players who were thrown into starting positions, made the most of it and ended up being the backbone of the team. After Steve Cohen bought the team from the Wilpons, Cohen immediately went to work. He signed and extended SS Francisco Lindor, a blockbuster trade during the offseason. He also signed catcher James McCann, along with starting pitchers Carlos Carrasco, Taijuan Walker, and Marcus Stroman to strengthen their starting pitching staff. deGrom, Carrasco, Walker, and Stroman could have been the best rotation in baseball. Then the injuries started. Carrasco went out due to a hamstring tear and missed the first half of the season. Joey Lucchesi, another starting pitcher, was doing better after every one of his starts. But with the curse of injuries plagued upon the Mets, on June 19, Lucchesi was removed from the game against the Nationals. Later

that day, it was revealed that he was a partial UCL in his left arm, forcing him to undergo Tommy John surgery. Noah Syndergaard, a starting pitcher for the Mets, had Tommy John surgery in 2019. After missing the entire 2020 season, he was working his way back to the majors, but once he was starting his rehab assignments, he was shut down due to inflammation. Luckily for him, he finally made his way back to the majors on September 28. Although he only went an inning, he had a 1-2-3 inning with two strikeouts. Rather good for someone that has not pitched in the big leagues since 2019. But there were also Mets players who weren’t injured but still failed to live up to expectations. After being with the Mets for nearly six seasons, Michael Conforto had the worst season of his career with only 52 RBIs and 14 home runs. Conforto was not swinging the bat well like he has in previous years. In fact, he had fallen into many slumps at the plate, and while he got hot, he ultimately lost his groove. Another player to add to the list is Francisco Lindor. He was one of the many players who were underperforming at the start of this season. Although by the end he was looking like his old self, he understood that he was part of the blame and took accountability for it. In an article by Mike Puma, a writer for the New York Post, Lindor said, “I felt

like we had to good team coming into this year. We have collapsed, and I haven’t performed, especially. I know if I would have played a little bit better, I know we could have won at least five to seven more games, which we would be fighting for first place right now.” He placed a lot of blame on himself, because he knew that he was capable of doing better. After Lindor was sidelined due to a strained right oblique, he finished out September with a .230/.325/.403 slash line. One of the biggest heartbreaks of this season was Jacob DeGrom. Although during the season, he was his sharp self, he too was plagued with injuries. With many of his starts being pushed

back due to right forearm tightness, on July 7, he was start down. Although he had many rehab assignments and kept getting shut down with more forearm tightness, it was evident that he was going to be shut down for the rest of the season. Mets fans had hoped their ace would heal up, but their hope had finally dwindled. On September 28, NYDaily News reporter, Deesha Thosaar, said “Jacob deGrom will be shut down for the remainder of the season, says Luis Rojas.” If the circumstances were different and the Mets were in a playoff run, he would be in the pitching rotation. Without a playoff run, the Mets have some rebuilding and contract extensions to

decide. As of October 4, the Mets released skipper Luis Rojas, after two seasons. He ended his tenure with a 103-119 record, resulting in a fourth and third place finish over those two years. The Mets plan on interviewing possible baseball operations candidates over the next month, and the search for a new manager will proceed afterwards. All Mets fans can only hope for a better 2022 season. Hopefully one not plagued with injuries and maintaining a winning record.

Yesenia Maldonado Contributing Writer Occupational Therapy is a healthcare profession that aids individuals with physical, sensory, or cognitive issues. Occupational Therapists can help individuals regain their independence and create activities that support what they want or need in life. Alvernia promotes Occupational Therapy’s focus on activities that can bring meaning to the lives of individuals, families, and communities. OT majors may take classes related to pediatrics, adults, geriatrics, adapting and grading, and adaptive technology, all of which have some aspect of hands-on learning. OT majors are also required to complete fieldwork placements. Mackenzie Wieciech is in her fifth and last year in her Master of Occupational Therapy program. Wieciech found OT ideal for her because of her passion and shared interests in helping and teaching others. She has come to love the versatility in OT. It allows her to work with varying age groups,

“OT allows me to connect with my clients and use my creativity to guide them back to doing what they need and want to do as independently as possible,” she said. From birth to geriatrics, Wieciech focuses on what is most important to the client. Reilly Enos, a sophomore in Occupational Therapy, has been interested in the major since she was twelve and was inspired by her sister, “My older sister needed OT, and I would go with her to the sessions. Ever since then, I’ve wanted to be an Occupational Therapist!” she said. While Enos is not deep into the program yet, she shared that taking classes like Neuroscience has been insightful and interactive. She looks to OT to be able to improve someone’s life skills. Enos is currently focused on her coursework and values finding support with her peers in the program. Fieldwork in Occupational Therapy is like an internship. It is done in a sequence of experiences, which are referred to as levels, and completed during junior and senior years. Wieciech has

had three level-1 fieldwork placements at Millmont Elementary School, the Colonial Intermediate Unit 20, and the Reading House Association. These placements are meant to let you observe and learn to interact with different populations. The Paramount Recovery House, one of her level-II fieldworks, is traditional housing for those recovering from drug and alcohol abuse. It was one that she noted to be especially tough, “It really challenged me to ‘put on my OT hat’ and think of creative ways to engage the residents in activities,” she said. However, the work brought forth very positive results, “While this was by far one of my most challenging placements, it was rewarding to see a resident breakthrough and start to engage in our activities.” Currently, Wieciech is a rehabilitation aide at the University of Maryland Upper Chesapeake Medical Center. During her time as a resident assistant, she became interested in the

geriatric population, “I now have a passion for working in geriatrics to help bring a sense of independence and purpose back into their lives that many tend to lose as they age,” she said. From both Wieciech’s and Enos’s experiences, it is important to be open-minded in Occupational Therapy and think outside the box. It’s also helpful to make the right connections. In being open to the many populations and settings, you can find one you would not have otherwise

loved or become passionate about. OT welcomes creativity and taking advantage of that can deepen your learning and experiences. Occupational Therapy offers the chance to impact individual lives and allows for innovation. It focuses on improving the quality of life. It is an essential part of society. Even helping people complete the smallest of tasks, finding independence and meaning allow for much self-fulfillment.

I’m Happy You’re Vaccinated: An Opinion Piece

A wee-little intro Now that’s it’s finally fall and many of us have gotten the vaccine (and if you haven’t, move along, this article isn’t for you. Grow up and get your shot; we’re all tired of your nonsense), many are excited to get back to our “normal lives” from almost two years ago. Honey, I have bad news, we cannot go back to those times. It’s time to let go of the past. Time for flu shots as well, vaccinated or not, protect yourselves, they are different viruses believe it or not!! The Biggest Aspect of Time is Change Do you remember what your life was like when we all first got into lockdown? Because I do not at all. When I say this, I mean that I remember I was a senior in high school, but I don’t remember important things. How did I feel during this time? What was most important to me then? What were my principles and morals at this time of my life? I don’t understand the

obsession with living in the past. I understand that many things have happened in the world with coronavirus, and it has gotten dark during this time, but I wouldn’t want to hit a rewind button on my life. With each unfortunate thing that has happened during this pandemic, I’ve learned something, I think we all might have. I’ve learned so much about myself and whom I want to be as a person that I don’t think I would want to go back to my old self again.

I will admit that I have been privileged in this pandemic. Many people have lost a lot during this time, whether that be a job or a family member, and I do have a lot of sympathy for that and those who suffer. I understand that this is not a great time for a lot of people, and it should in no way be romanticized, but neither should the time before. Romanticizing a time in your life, no matter how easy or nice it can be, is detramental

for your mental health. There is no need to live in the past. The Big Daddy Delta Variant During the summer we have been introduced to the Delta variant of the coronavirus. The Delta variant is a mutated strain of the coronavirus that is even more infectious than the original. Delta may be more resistant to the vaccine because of its mutations, though being vaccinated will still most likely keep you

out of the hospital. Delta’s symptoms seem to mirror allergy like symptoms, which will lead to people being infected and also unaware.. The CDC recommends wearing a mask that covers your nose and mouth in all indoor areas even if you are vaccinated, to protect you and those around you. Please continue to wear your mask!! Bringing this article back to me, I’m fully vaccinated but I still wear my mask. I do this because I do not know the situations of those around me every day. When I am at my job, I am not sure who is sick, who is vaccinated or not, and there is the possibility that those germs could be spread to me and then be passed to the people I love. When I’m on campus, I will never be sure what is going on in the lives of my peers. What if I pass something onto someone or their loved ones who could be more effected by the virus? I believe that wearing a piece of fabric over your nose and mouth is worth it when you can prevent yourself and others from getting sick..

Netflix’s ‘Squid Game’ Has Record Breaking Launch Korean based Netflix thriller “Squid Game” is the biggest thing on television right now. Since debuting on September 17, the new drama series has racked up an astonishing 111 million views, breaking “Bridgerton”’s first-month viewer record at 82 million households set this past January. “In my opinion, the show is worth the hype it’s getting. It’s pretty wild and I recommend watching it if you haven’t yet.” Alvernia student Justin Mercogliano said. The show is about 456 players, all deeply in debt, that participate in a series of children’s games in order to win a massive cash prize equating to nearly $40 million USD. Seong Gi-Hun, the main character of the new Netflix hit series, accepts an invitation to make a

significant amount of money in order to pay off his debts with the South Korean government and various loan sharks around the country. However, he and the 455 other participants are unaware what they are getting themselves into. All the participants are gathered in a large room with a massive robot doll centered in the back of the room. The

first stage is a simple game of “Red Light Green Light” with a twist. Whenever a participant moves after the robot doll says “red light”, they are shot and killed immediately. Chaos begins to ensue which results in the death of most of the participants. Commented [RL1]: Good start. I would talk more about the themes of the show and

critical reaction to it. Be sure you provide captions and photo credits for screengrabs. Recently, Netflix’s voiced dubbed shows like Squid Game are receiving more popular attention. Other voice dubbed series include Money Heist, Lupin, and Dark. “This is the second voice dubbed series I have watched, the first being Money Heist.” Alvernia Student Jayson

Kelley said. “Personally, I think Money Heist was easier to follow due to their inclusion of an English narrator as well as English voice overs.” Since the show was originally produced in South Korea, English dubbing helps to make the show accessible to the English-speaking world. However, the true passion displayed by the original actors in the show is masked by the English voice over actors. Since it is very hard to display the same emotion presented by the original actors, moments of the show often came off as cheesy in serious scenes. “With how intense the show was, the voice over acting did not line up with how the show was meant to be portrayed. I could only imagine how much better the show was to Korean .” Squid Game gained popularity worldwide as soon as it was released by Netflix. Overall, the new hit drama series is a must watch!

A team of specialists who investigate cold cases says it has identified the Zodiac Killer. The “Zodiac Killer” was one of America’s most infamous serial murderers who terrorized communities in the San Francisco area in the late 1960s with a series of brutal slayings and unsolvable riddles. However, this latest claim has been heavily under dispute because the evidence isn’t airtight, and it has not been confirmed by the FBI. The Case Breakers, a team of more than 40 former law enforcement investigators, journalists and military intelligence officers, has tackled other mysteries such as the D.B. Cooper hijacking heist, the disappearance of former labor union boss Jimmy Hoffa and other unsolved cases. The group believes the killer is responsible for a slaying hundreds of miles away that was never linked to The Zodiac Killer.. The Zodiac Killer has been connected to five murders that occurred in 1968 and 1969 in the San Francisco area. Unlike most serial

killers, the Zodiac taunted authorities with complex ciphers in letters sent to newspapers and law enforcement, some that have still never been solved. . The deaths have spawned books, movies and documentaries in the years since, and amateur and professionals have poured over the case to unmask the killer. The Zodiac terrorized communities across Northern California in the late 1960s. The killer has been connected to five killings but claimed to have murdered 37 victims. The first of the confirmed Zodiac killings occurred in December 1968 when a man and woman were shot dead in a car in Benicia, California. On July 4, 1969, another man and woman were shot in Vallejo. He survived. In the decades since the first murder, many potential suspects have been investigated. The Case Breakers is now saying it has identified the Zodiac Killer as Gary Francis Poste, who passed away in 2018. The team’s years of digging uncovered new forensic evidence and photos from under dispute. The evidence here is not airtight, though it does seem to be

provocative. The appearance of the reward and the sudden appearance of the cold case breakers is something we ought to treat with some suspicion. As the saying goes, if your mother says she loves you, check it out. These pictures also need photo credits and captions. Poste’s darkroom. One image features scars on the forehead of Poste that match scars on a sketch of the Zodiac, the team said. Other clues include deciphering letters sent by the Zodiac that revealed him as the killer, said Jen Bucholtz, a former Army counterintelligence agent who works on cold cases. In one note, the letters of Poste’s full name were removed to reveal an alternate message “So you’ve got to know Gary’s full name in order to decipher these anagrams,” Bucholtz said. “Just don’t think there’s any other way anybody would have figured it out.” The team believes Poste also killed Cheri Jo Bates on Oct. 31, 1966, in Riverside, California, hundreds of miles south from the San Francisco area and two years before the first killing linked to the Zodiac Killer occurred. Bates, 18, was found dead in an

In 2020, a team of code-breakers cracked a 340-character cipher that was sent to the San Francisco Chronicle by the Zodiac. At the time, the FBI said the Zodiac case remained ongoing. This year, the Riverside Police Department offered a $50,000 reward for information leading to a conviction in the decades-old murder case. Multiple news programs have reached out to the Vallejo Police Department and the FBI and unsuccessfully tried reaching out to relatives of Poste. A wristwatch with paint splatter on it was collected at the murder scene and is thought to have been worn by the killer. Poste painted homes for more than four decades, the team said.
