Is this 15m x 36m x 6.3m drive-through Monster Machinery Shed this year’s “Shed of the Year?” See inside to find out…

SHED OF THE YEAR EXPLAINED Once again it’s been a bumper year at Grant Sheds! We’ve helped over 200 farmers realise their shed dreams. And this year we thought we’d continue last year’s fun with Grant Sheds “Shed of the Year” where we pick the category of shed that has helped farmers the most. How did we choose “Shed of the Year”?

Which shed will it be?

We used three criteria:

Read on to discover the finalists and overall winner… PLUS… the “centrefold” reveals how Respected Farmers saw their 2023 calendar year.

1. Helpfulness of shed to farmers 2. Numbers sold (not necessarily the “most” sold)

And, if you’re looking for your own end of year reward, check out the “Shed of the Year” special offer on the back page. You deserve it!

3. What we really loved about the type of shed

THE YEAR IN REVIEW Respected Farmers look back on the year that was 2023 Andy Withers, Naracoorte SA

“Exmoor Grazing Company” Beef Stud Cattle Your year on the land: Ups & downs, typical of life on the land. Highlights: 12 months ago we saw the best livestock prices ever! Hay prices lower so its been a good time to buy and store good hay for future use. Beef exports very high in tonnage terms & fresh, new markets developed which is good for the long term and means higher prices will be more sustainable. Challenges: Best livestock prices plunged to half the prices we were getting 12 months ago.

“Another outstanding Grant shed. Our 7th over 50 years! Most organised builders I’ve even seen…” Andy Withers, 15m x 18m x 6.3m Hay Shed

Benefits of your shed so far: I have 7 Grant Sheds. I LOVE my dedicated workshop, set up for ease of getting stuck into projects. Hay sheds are great for storing hay I grow or buy in & store. Machinery sheds perfect protecting our expensive equipment. Plans for 2024: Finish build of new house. Shortages have made it a drawn out project.

Greg Lowe, Hamley Bridge SA Dedicated Cropping Farmers

Your year on the land: Appreciate having son Bradley working with us. His mechanical and technical knowledge is a huge benefit. Highlights: 3 record years in a row. Pricing &/or yields high in all 3 years. Changed to knifepoints & press wheels on air seeder. Bradley adding new farm ideas. Challenges: Keeping up with technology of modern farm machinery. Drier year but crops hung on well due to sub-soil moisture. Benefits of your shed so far: Last shed virtually paid for itself in providing space & cover for the big, multi-month project of fitting the new knifepoints & press wheels.

“I prefer quality & the ease of all the organising Grant’s do for me. I wouldn’t go anywhere else.” Greg Lowe, 15m x 24m x 6.3m Machinery Shed

Plans for 2024: Another new shed! Always need more storage space. We pay big money for equipment won’t leave it out in the weather. And hoping for a good 2023 harvest and kind weather in 2024.

Ashley Rowe, Kadina SA

“Kentash Park” Cropping + Livestock Farmer Your year on the land: Average crop yields on well below average rainfall probably sums it up. Highlights: New drive-through Grant machinery shed with doors each end. New baby, we now have 3 girls under 4 (funny that the highlight of the shed came before the baby .. Haha!)

“Always a pleasure dealing with the Grant Challenges: Only 205mm of rain for the year in our area that usually has 350mm team. I didn’t even bother to seek prices from average. Getting urea timing right due to only small rain events to wash it in. Overall, others.” Ashley Rowe’s 15m x 30m x 5.1m slightly below average yields but quality was good so that’s a bonus. Livestock prices Drive-through shed low. Sheep down 70% & cattle down 50% on last year. Paddock feed now running out fast. Smaller hay cut than normal so glad we have our own baled hay from previous seasons stored in another Grant shed we own so hopefully won’t have to buy in feed & shedded hay retains feed quality. Benefits of your shed so far: It’s a drive-through style for truck & trailer combinations so there’s no need to disconnect which saves time & frustration. Plus it’s a space to store long things like augers that have lots of moving parts to protect from sun damage. Plans for 2024: “Have another crack!” Every year I try to improve things (new crop varieties, better practices, more streamlined, easier to do or upgrade something). Investing in the new machinery shed this year is an example. It will save me time, make things easier and protect equipment from harsh sun damage and use for quick & easy cover of trucks etc during harvest if rain forecast.

4.

Mark Bigg, Balaklava SA

“Majula Farms” Cropping and Sheep Grazing Your year on the land: Better than expected harvest. Earliest start and end to harvest ever (finished 20th November). Highlights: To get an average harvest on only 9” of rain for the year is pretty good. Sub-soil moisture available from 2022 wet year certainly helped, along with modern cropping techniques. Summer weed spraying is ‘king’ for retaining sub-soil moisture. I can easily see the difference on the one paddock I didn’t summer spray. Got around 2.5t/ha wheat & 3t/ha barley. When I came onto the farm 35 years ago, we’d have got ‘Sweet F.A.’ on this amount of rain, probably only .6-.8t/ha. Challenges: Deciding whether to continue with sheep or go to cropping only. Tempted to replace sheep with lentil crop as we’re currently getting $950/t for lentils while sheep prices are extremely low at present. Sheep are labour intensive and prevent us taking a decent length holiday. I’m still concerned about ‘putting all my eggs in one basket’ though. Benefits of your shed so far: Everything is undercover and makes things easier for me. I used to have things in hay sheds and other sheds, now I just take my equipment home to the new shed. Logistically that makes it a lot better. “Grant Sheds are great to deal with. Shed is strong, communication was exceptional. Builders great.” Mark Bigg, 30m x 78m x 8m MEGA Machinery Shed 2023

Plans for 2024: Stop Procrastinating. Make my decision about the sheep.

Trusted Since 1952

rs in Review YeaYear Ali & Danny’s 1952 - 2022

Production business owners, Grant Sheds. Committed to family & community. 1952 - 2022

Years

Our year: Continued busyness in business. A houseboat holiday delayed Trusted Since 1952 due to River Murray flooding. Enjoying life through inevitable ups and downs.

Years

1952 -sold, 2022 especially to repeat customers who appreciate our Highlights: The ongoing high level of sheds sheds and the relationships we build. Working with farmers and farming communities is something we genuinely enjoy. Two short holidays. One along Victoria’s Great Ocean Road and a recent one on a River Murray Houseboat with interstate Trusted friends. So lovely to show them our part of the world. Since 1952

Challenges: Managing shed material shortages and scheduling with long lead times. Juggling business, family & community commitments; handling executor positions for parents wills. Renovating Ali’s dad’s house. Observations: The wonderful legacy we have from our parents. Taught us the value of hard work, riding the highs & lows of running your own business & taking well judged risks to become successful. And of course, Ali’s dad’s community legacy of the (old) Monash Playground that he built and was loved by hundreds of thousands of visitors and is still talked about today, 30 years after it closed. Doing community work gives you back much more than you give as long as you don’t get hung up on the inevitable frustrations that can occur. If you give, while expecting frequent appreciation and accolades, you’ll likely get disappointed. Always give with the goodness of your heart rather than any expectation of return and then the appreciation seems to occur naturally. Plans for 2024: Balancing our work and recreation time better (hmmm… we said that last year.) It seems that busy people just keep busy. Even when something is completed or delegated, we fill that space with something else! Can’t keep good people down, hey?

“YOUR” Year in Review Take time to review your year. Celebrate the highlights and your wins. Learn from your challenges or mistakes rather than dwelling on the negatives. Plan your new year and put your plan into positive actions. Reflect again next year.
