PROGRAMME

The learning objectives of the workshop are to: 1.

determine effective strategies to reduce tobacco use, promote healthy eating, increase physical activity and decrease harmful use of alcohol;

2.

discuss the examples highlighted in the document;

3.

identify the social determinants of health and describe their impact on health promotion strategies; and

4.

discuss the challenges and opportunities to developing health promotion programmes in community settings.

OUTCOME The expected outcome of the workshop is to have strengthened capacity to develop and implement “Healthy Islands” faith-based health promotion interventions.

Social Determinants of Health

Exercise:

Identify the social determinants of health in your community. The purpose of this exercise is to give participants the opportunity to identify and address the social determinants of health in their community.

Scenario:

Your community leader is considering developing a policy to address the tobacco-, betel nut- and alcohol-free environment within your community. However, they realize there may be opposition and want to better understand the issues before moving forward.

Your task:

Prepare a brief summary of the issues for the faith-based leader, including the following: ❙

List the social determinants of health in your community.

Explain why healthy living is important in the community.

Identify the role of different sectors and communities in creating a healthy community.

You may choose to summarize these issues in writing (bullet points, no more than half a page), or you may prepare notes for a verbal presentation (no more than 5 minutes’ duration). You have 10 minutes to complete this exercise. You will then have the opportunity to review your work with one of the facilitators. The purpose of this exercise is to allow participants to practise using baseline information to assess a situation. Participants will look at the available data on this scenario and present back to the group. Your task: What steps do you recommend that Pastor John take to analyse the situation? You have 10 minutes to complete this exercise and present back to the other participants.

Presentation:

Adapting global guidelines CASE STUDY 4: Strengthening NCD prevention and control in Samoa Scenario: As a member of a church community, you are tasked to assist in promoting healthy lifestyle in the church. Based on the latest data provided by the Ministry of Health, the majority of Samoans are obese or overweight. Develop intervention methods to reverse these findings and identify ways to reduce obese and overweight amongst church members. The purpose of this exercise is to allow participants when developing their plan to adapt it to a global guideline and also align their work to the National NCD Strategic Plan. Your task: Participants will work in small groups to develop interventions and align these to a global guideline and to the National NCD Strategic Plan. They will then present these back to the group.
