Curiosity Can Create a Career By Kelly Carson, Editor, The Link Magazine We've all heard the saying: Stay curious. Studies have proven that curiosity can lead to a broader understanding of one's career and life in general. "When we become curious about something that makes us uncomfortable, we might notice things we didn’t see before. This can cause us to shift our thinking," Dr. Henry Emmons and researcher Aimee Prasek write for the website Experience Life. "We might realize that we don’t know what we thought we knew. Or that a person or situation is completely different from what we assumed. Or that we still don’t understand someone or something, but at least we know we don’t understand, and we accept it." You may not like this feeling. It can be uncomfortable, "but it’s that very discomfort that can create new neurological connections," the pair write. "Think of this as trampling a new path through unbroken snow instead of grass. It’s hard work, but it makes a big difference in the landscape. The effort might raise your stress level temporarily, but it’s a good stress. That stress gets quickly resolved and the new pathway can start to be reinforced. Pretty soon, you can walk that way with ease — and your mind can go places you never knew it could."

To develop a curious mind, follow these tips suggested by Christina LeClaire from the website Bold Orange. ■ Make time for learning. Set aside time in your day to explore new ideas and perspectives about topics that interest you. This can include reading books and articles, listening to podcasts and getting inspired by videos like TED Talks. ■ Ask questions. Don’t be afraid to ask questions for fear of “looking dumb.” This will help you understand the project, contribute your top strengths and lead your team to new ideas. ■ Take risks. Go outside your comfort zone and approach projects from a new angle. This will help you develop new skills and create new opportunities for yourself and your organization. ■ Be open to feedback. Be open to feedback from others and use it as an opportunity to learn and grow. ■ Embrace failure. Don’t be afraid to make mistakes and learn from them. This will help you become more resilient and less hesitant to try new things. "The people who change the world and lead in their industries have one thing in common: they follow their curiosity," LeClaire writes. "By being open to new ideas, building a deeper knowledge base and creating human connections, you will increase your creativity, job satisfaction and experience new opportunities. By consistently encouraging a curious mindset in the workplace, employers will unlock their employees’ potential, foster innovation and drive productivity." If you have not already, have you considered adding hair restoration to your skill set? To feed that curiosity explore the AHLC's website at ahlc.org where you will find stories from a variety of articles about succeeding in the hair restoration industry as well as educational events. Success, the 'I' Gen, and ... Doing the Right Thing By Dave Fatula, Events Coordinator Franciscan University; Principle Centered Customer Service Trainer and Presenter In a scene from the 1947 holiday classic "Miracle On 34th Street", R.C. Macy, former president of Macy's Department store, institutes his "controversial" goodwill policy. "We'll be known as the helpful store, the friendly store, the store with a heart ... the store that places public service ahead of profits ... and, consequently, we'll be more profitable and successful than ever." Success. Clarence the Angel, George Bailey's "appointed" guardian angel in "It's A Wonderful Life" wrote to (a now appreciative and grateful but previously despairing) George Bailey. "No man is a failure who has friends," Clarence said. Success. Different success stories — different levels of success — in a different era. However, Macy's success and George Bailey's success are both closely related to doing the right thing. Most of us, most likely all of us, are doing the right thing and exercising integrity in our business dealings, acting with compassion toward all our customers, internal and external employees, and paying customers all while having the unique opportunity to do what no one else

in history has done ... work with and serve seven generations of customers. It's a stretch, but possible when you consider those generations: ■ The Greatest Generation — those born between 1901 and 1924, known for "doing the right thing." ■ The Silent Generation — born between 1925 and 1945 were "stable and loyal." ■ Boomers — born between 1946 and 1964 were " change and progress." ■ Gen X — born between 1965 and 1980 are "independent and tech-savvy." ■ Millennials — born between 1981 and 1996 are "smart and flexible." ■ Gen Z, the I Gen, born between 1997 and 2012, the "I phone and internet generation." My personal favorite, Gen Alpha, born between 2013 and 2025, could be known as the "Al Generation"??? This is an impressive list of generations of customers. But they come with a lot of different needs and lots of different expectations. How is it possible to serve them all? None of us play generational favorites, but if we did, we'd be wise to favor the I Gen. Why? The I Gen makes up 25% of America's population. That's the most of any generation in America. In addition, the untapped potential and the possibilities of this generation are unfathomable. How do we care for and serve this group in our changing technological world?

Jean Twenge, an authority on generational differences says the I General is super connected, less rebellious, more tolerant, less happy, and completely unprepared for dealing with adults. The best way to deal with this new cohort of clients is simply to do the right thing. ■ Listen, first to understand, with empathy and compassion. ■ Seek their advice and input. ■ Ask for and accept their opportunities for improvement. ■ Have the courage to admit to them that we don't have all the answers. ■ Expect more from them than anyone else. ■ Keep our promises to them. ■ Make sure they know our clear expectations and that we know theirs. Some of the things I believe that will help you build your clientele and business: ■ Always exercise integrity. ■ Never forget the enormous potential and promise of this generation. ■ Always apologize sincerely when needed; the power in this is immeasurable. ■ Attend to the little things ... the little kindnesses and courtesies. ■ Keep the promises. ■ Listen to understand. Knowing the minds of our customers, especially this I Gen, is the key to our success. Doing the right thing will just about guarantee this success. ou'll attract clients who appreciate your expertise and are more likely to become long-term customers. THE LINK MAGAZINE

Tell, Don't Sell Understanding 'Thinning Hair Space' Revenue Drivers and How to Capture $$$ for Your Salon By Colleen Camp, Global Education Director, BosleyMD

engage in conversations, answer questions, and build relationships.

Educational selling, also known as consultative selling, is a strategy that focuses on educating potential clients about their needs and the solutions your product or service can provide.

BUSINESS TIP #3

This approach is often more effective than traditional sales tactics because it builds trust and positions you as an authority in your industry. Here are my top tips for attracting new clients through educational selling:

BUSINESS TIP #1 Create valuable content that is meaningful to your client. Potential and existing clients want to know the “why” behind hair thinning before they want to know how to treat it. Offering your expertise in an educational format will be much more engaging and will entice them to learn more from you, your services, and what you can offer in support of their hair-thinning challenge.

BUSINESS TIP #2 Utilize social media support groups. Share your knowledge on social media platforms where your target audience is active such as support groups. I can’t emphasize enough how effective this can be if approached correctly. Utilizing social support groups and platforms helps you to

Tell don’t sell. Most online support groups do not allow selling of any kind; however, if your knowledge is posted, powerful and helpful, potential clients can be reached through a private message.

BUSINESS TIP #4 Offer workshops and webinars. Host workshops or webinars to provide in-depth knowledge on relevant topics. This interactive approach allows you to showcase your expertise while directly addressing the concerns of your audience.

BUSINESS TIP #5 Use testimonials and case studies. Clients trust more with scientific substantiation and proven-to-work products and services for their hair and scalp health. Highlighting real-world examples of how your product or service has helped others builds credibility and provides social proof.

BUSINESS TIP #6 Provide complementary service. Offering a free scalp analysis or complementary bang trim entices clients to come to your salon, giving you the opportunity to have direct conversations with new clients.

BUSINESS TIP #7 Know industry trends and category growth drivers. Did you know that consumer spending is approaching $4 billion per year seeking effective solutions for fine and thinning hair?” That’s right. $4 billion, with a B. It’s also interesting to note, that women are now seeking and purchasing as many products as men with the purchasing ratio now reaching 50-50. Being in tune and understanding trends regarding the “thinning hair space” and its revenue drivers offers direction for your development of social media content. Remember, the key to educational selling is to genuinely help your clients solve their challenges rather than simply pushing a product or service. By positioning yourself as a valuable resource, you'll attract clients who appreciate your expertise and are more likely to become long-term customers. THE LINK MAGAZINE

Anticipate Customer Needs By Nazy Curtis, Newport Hair Loss Center, Newport Beach, California

To make informed decisions regarding both the inventory and marketing packages of a hair loss salon, it is crucial to adopt a strategic approach to inventory. By anticipating the typical needs of customers, salons can effectively determine what types of wigs, top pieces, lengths, and colors, and most importantly, different cap sizes, should be included in their inventory.

reducing reliance on a rapidly changing market.

The expense of keeping inventory pays off when your client needs something and doesn't have to wait weeks or even months for it. It is one advantageous aspect of owning inventory; the ability to guarantee the desired pieces. This flexibility allows salons to acquire the items they need precisely when needed, eliminating any potential obstacles or delays in providing top-notch service.

Strategic inventory management entails proactively building a comprehensive inventory that includes the essential "bread and butter" pieces. Get to know your clients well and have what they will need on hand.

Establishing a collaborative relationship with a supplier who does not compete with your studio is paramount. By aligning interests and relying on a supportive supplier, salons can ensure a mutually beneficial partnership focused on delivering exceptional customer service while minimizing potential conflicts of interest.

By being well-prepared, salons can maintain a consistent level of quality and have control over the variables, thus

Most suppliers have programs that give qualified hair professionals the chance to promote their products

through a preferential program, allowing them to maintain inventory and curate their assortment of top pieces and wigs. Inventory management involves proactively building a comprehensive stock that includes the essential pieces customers commonly look for. This ensures that your studio always has the necessary items readily available. By being well-prepared, you can maintain a consistent level of quality and availability of rapidly changing styles. Why is it worthwhile to maintain even a small inventory? Diversification: Having a diverse inventory at your disposal allows you to serve a greater variety of clients; male, female, short term and long term. Accessibility: Having a back stock on hand will help keep costs down from shipping and handling. One advantage of owning inventory is the ability to guarantee the desired pieces without incurring immediate costs. This flexibility allows salons to acquire the items they need precisely when needed, eliminating any potential obstacles or delays in providing excellent service to your clients. THE LINK MAGAZINE

Randy Clark Title: Owner Salon: Randy Clark & Associates City: Dallas, Texas Question 1: Tell us about where you grew up. Answer: While I grew up in the city, I spent a lot of time on the family farm. In high school, I rode bulls and now I make a living "shooting the bull."

Question 5: Who have been your most substantial influences in life? Answer: My father. He was always there for me, no matter what. Question 6: How would friends and acquaintances describe you? Answer: Tough, fair, resourceful and loyal, but when taken to limit, brutal.

Become a member and get featured! Question 7: What would you do differently if you had a chance? Answer: Not a thing. Question 8: Describe a scene of your vision for the future. Answer: Whatever life throws my way. Randy is a member of the AHLC board of directors.

Question 2: What was your favorite cartoon growing up, and why? Answer: "Three Stooges." It was funny. The slapstick, goofy, lighthearted humor made me laugh. As I look back it is a good reminder to not take life so seriously Question 3: If a movie were made about your life, who would play you?: Answer: Kevin Costner. He plays a good cowboy. Question 4: Describe your high school years. Answer: Didn’t go much. Honestly, I skipped school a lot. I had a 1966 Chevelle SS. And at 16 I took a 45-minute drive to take a 6-hour test so that I could be certified to inspect cars. That way I could get a job at a service station so I could work on my car for free. My senior year I broke my leg playing football, which changed what I thought I might do for a career. Shortly after that, I picked up my mom from a hair appointment and saw the stylist really having fun and doing well. At that moment I thought, I could do this. And if I didn't make a lot of money, at least I would enjoy life. THE LINK MAGAZINE

Exploring the Pathways to Discovering the Main Cause of Hair Loss as a Certified Trichologist

Dr. Shawon Gullette ND,I.A.T, Certified Trichologist | Naturopathic Medicine Dayton Trichology Hair Loss Control Clinic, Kettering, Ohio

laser therapy treatment, nonsurgical hair transplants, consultations, and herbal hair treatments. After witnessing my positive impact in Dayton, I expanded my practice and inaugurated the Cincinnati Trichology Hair Loss Control Clinic in 2021. The Cincinnati clinic boasts state-of-the-art facilities, including a reception area, laser therapy treatment room, consultation room, and herbal hair treatment room. With these two locations, I aim to reach and help a broader client base, providing optimal hair loss solutions.

As a certified trichologist, our main objective is to uncover the causes of hair loss and hair and scalp conditions. Throughout my experience, I have found it highly advantageous to network with professionals from various fields such as dermatology, nutrition, gynecology, hematology, and more. This collaboration has enabled me to provide comprehensive care to my clients and offer effective solutions to their hair loss concerns.

My Trichology Journey With a passion for helping individuals with hair loss, I have dedicated my career to becoming a certified trichologist.

Throughout the years, I have gained extensive knowledge and expertise in this field. In 2007, I established the Dayton Trichology Hair Loss Control Clinic, which has been serving the community for 15 years. The clinic offers a wide range of services and features specialized rooms for

dermatologists, nutritionists, gynecologists, hematologists, and other experts, I have been able to offer my clients a multifaceted approach to their hair loss concerns. As most of my clients come as a referral from health care professionals and we comanage hair loss in some cases.

Dermatology: Unraveling the Role of the Scalp Working closely with dermatologists has been instrumental. Dermatologists specialize in diagnosing and treating conditions that affect the skin, including the scalp. Through their expertise, we can identify underlying skin disorders, infections, or inflammations that may contribute to hair loss. Collaborating with dermatologists allows us to develop tailored treatments that address both the scalp condition and hair loss simultaneously. As a team I take the lead on the internal side such as the different body systems, and a thorough in-clinic comprehensive consultation, I perform 90% of the treatment protocols by getting to the root cause of hair loss.

Nutrition: Nourishing the Hair from Within Nutrition plays a crucial role in maintaining healthy hair. By collaborating with nutritionists, we can identify any deficiencies

or imbalances in our clients' diets that may be contributing to their hair loss. Nutritionists help us develop personalized plans that include essential vitamins, minerals, and nutrients to promote hair growth and overall scalp health. I earned a doctorate in naturopathic medicine where I’m able to exchange knowledge as it relates to hair loss and nutrition. One of my main tools is a tissue mineral analysis.

Gynecology: Hormones and Hair Loss Hormonal imbalances can have a significant impact on hair health in both men and women. By partnering with gynecologists, we can explore the connection between hormonal disorders, such as polycystic ovary syndrome and hair loss. With their expertise, we can develop targeted treatments that specifically address the hormonal factors contributing to hair loss.

Hematology: Uncovering Underlying Blood Disorders Certain blood disorders can manifest in hair loss. Collaborating with hematologists allows us to investigate any underlying blood conditions that may be affecting our clients' hair health. By addressing these disorders, we can promote healthy blood circulation to the scalp, ensuring optimal hair growth. It should also be noted that

learning to read blood panels is important.

Coaching Trichologists for Success Alongside my trichology practices, I also serve as the director of Triborne Marketing Solutions. This role allows me to coach trichologists on how to build systems within their business and leverage their income. By sharing my insights and experiences, I aim to empower fellow trichologists to excel in their careers and make a difference in the lives of their clients. As a certified Trichologist, my journey has been marked by a relentless pursuit of knowledge and collaboration with experts from various fields. Through networking with dermatologists, nutritionists, gynecologists, hematologists, and others, I have been able to offer comprehensive care to my clients and uncover the main causes of their hair loss. My passion for helping trichologists advance in their careers has led me to create coaching programs for them through Triborne Marketing Solutions. By uncovering the pathways to discovering the main cause of hair loss, we can provide effective solutions and support individuals in regaining their confidence through optimal hair health.y positioning yourself as a valuable resource, you'll attract clients who appreciate your expertise and are more likely to become long-term customers. The Right Mix: Choosing the Ideal Trichology Training for Your Success By Tabitha Fredrichs, Owner, Tabitha F Hair LLC, Plymouth Minnesota Becoming a trichologist is like mixing the perfect blend of expertise, empathy, and practical skills. It's a journey that demands the right mix of education, mentorship, and support. To excel as a trichologist, you need the right training that offers not just information but also a recipe for success. Experienced Instructors: The instructors are the master chefs: Seek out seasoned educators who have tasted the trichology world. Their insights, like the perfect seasoning, will elevate your learning experience. Practical Skills: The right amount of spice: No dish is complete without a bit of spice, and in trichology, practical skills encompass a range of hands-on abilities and techniques necessary for assessing, diagnosing, and treating hair and scalp conditions. These skills are essential for trichologists to provide effective care to their clients. Trichologists should be adept at visually and tactilely examining the hair and scalp to identify issues like hair thinning, scalp conditions, and hair loss patterns. Access to Special Tools: The cooking utensils: Trichologists have

their special tools, much like a chef's favorite kitchen utensils. Make sure your training includes access to diagnostic tools such as dermascopes, hair analysis testing, lowlevel light lasers, growth factors, TED (a new ultrasound-based system), and more. Learning how to use these tools effectively is like mastering the art of chopping and dicing. A Dash of Values and Ethics: The secret sauce: Every great dish has a secret sauce that makes it exceptional. In trichology, that secret sauce is ethical, professional values and you. You wouldn’t be looking into becoming a hair loss specialist if you didn’t care for your clients. Choose a program that emphasizes ethical standards, and gives you the support to be yourself in everything you do. Take all the knowledge and put your own spin on it. I believe that people are searching specifically for you to help them with their hair loss. And once they hear that you can help, then you will have a line out the door. Ongoing Support: The recipe for success: After you've completed your training, ongoing support is like the icing on the cake. Find programs that offer post-training support, access to a network of professionals, and continuing education opportunities. The best motivation to eliminate self-doubt is to be able to connect with likeminded people who are on the same path.

As the old saying goes, “Individually we are one drop but together we are an ocean.” Imagine your journey to becoming a trichologist as preparing a gourmet meal. Your training program is like a recipe that combines all the right ingredients. The information is your flour, giving structure to your knowledge. The instructors are the master chefs, guiding you with their expertise. Practical skills are the spices that add flavor to your learning. The special tools are your kitchen utensils, helping you create your magic. Values, ethics, and you are the secret sauce that makes your service exceptional, and ongoing support is the icing on your career cake. Just like in cooking, the right mix is the key to your success. Becoming a trichologist is a unique journey that requires a blend of knowledge, practical skills, and mentorship. I'm looking forward to witnessing the growth and evolution of this industry. In the future, I believe trichologists will emerge as the next generation of cosmetologists, reshaping the beauty and wellness industry. THE LINK MAGAZINE

Get Ready, Get Set . . Wait A Minute By Glen Michael Millett, Owner, Business Communications Expert The dream of owning and operating a successful business of your own creates an amazing emotional rush of excitement and anticipation. However, the nightmare of going out of business can create immense emotional fear, stress, frustration, and depression. Understand that going into business is fun, yet, going out of business is not. One of the first things to decide is what will be your role in this new venture. Will you work as a technician in the business, handle leadership and management, or some combination of both? Opening and owning your new business is like having a new baby whose happiness, success, growth, and well-being are both your responsibility and your priority. Know the role you most want to perform and what you are best at. Then assign everything else to those who possess the skills to get it done. Consider the answers to these questions. Do NFL team owners play on the field? “NO.” Do employees in the front office of an NFL franchise play on the field? “NO.” Do NFL coaches play on the field? “NO.” Each member of your team must possess specific skills, talents, and assets. Therefore, learn and apply these skills, talents, and assets and it will be “Game On” for your new business success. Today’s research suggests that 20% of new businesses fail during the first two years, 45% fail during the first five years, and 65% during the first 10 years. Controlling every aspect of what supports business growth and success or business decline and failure is like trying to

light a match in a hurricane. Not an easy task as the variable winds of constant change means being prepared for the unexpected. Know that certain aspects are constants and will not change. Yet, being prepared for the variables will provide greater confidence and peace of mind. Simply stated, the better prepared you are from the get-go the higher the probability that you will achieve your business success and avoid becoming a business closing casualty. Here is a short list of why businesses fail and what essentials must be in place (both legal and operational) to avoid frustration and stress while achieving greater peace of mind.

Once created, your business plan will become a trusted guide map on your journey to business success. Yet, like any good game plan, you must be able to adjust, pivot, and redirect when your original plan becomes ineffective, obsolete, or stifles production. In addition, what good is having a business plan that you do not review in a consistent and timely manner? One must review their business plan frequently to confirm that it is working as planned or doesn't require adjustments. Keep in mind that no two business plans are exactly alike and that your business plan is not etched in stone. It's more etched in Jello. Basically, it’s gotta have some wiggle room. No Business Plan or Inadequate Planning It has been said that “failure to plan is a plan to fail.” No professional sports team goes out to play the game without a game plan. Opening a new business based on emotion and wishes is a recipe for disaster. Simply stated, you must have a business plan. If you are not skilled in outlining your business plan, hire a business coach with experience to assist you in writing your business plan. Additionally, know ‘before you go.’ This means doing your online homework on how to create a business plan as well as confirming that the person you are considering for guidance is qualified. Failure to Know and Define Your Target Market Client Base Think about it like this, if you could only service one type of client, who would you most want to service, is there a strong need for what you offer, and will you turn a highprofit servicing that market? Consider your desire to go out to dinner, do you search for a particular type of restaurant (seafood, steaks, Italian, Asian, Mexican) or do you look for one restaurant that tries to be all things to all diners? In most cases, you have a particular desire and search for restaurants that will best deliver the taste happiness and dining experience you are looking for.

sales they make. Therefore, have a reliable software program that tracks your inventory effectively in order wisely and slay this silent business killer.

throw it away. Why would you invest time or money in anything that is pie-in-the-sky or unable to guarantee a positive return on your investment?

Although you can do anything you cannot do everything. Therefore, begin by determining what jobs and tasks will need to be done on a recurring basis and who will be responsible for the results.

Next, let’s look at column C. This is a task’s only column and if you can assign the task to someone else at a lesser hourly rate than what you or other higher hourly productive team members generate it will greatly benefit your time while increasing productivity and profitability.

Begin by making a list of all tasks and responsibilities decide which tasks you want to be responsible for, and then delegate the remaining tasks to other team members or outsource to other business professionals.

As a new business owner, your two primary responsibilities will be sales and leadership. Therefore, your focus is column A anything that is guaranteed to generate sales and income.

The salon and studio experience are no different as clients look for businesses that deliver the emotion of happiness with both their service and product offerings and an amazing client experience.

Consider the key individuals you should have in place before you open the doors, such as your banker, CPA, insurance agent, financial planner, and most importantly, your business coach.

Not Having Predictable, Measurable, and Profitable Internal Systems

Therefore, define your target market client, know the challenges and pain points that they are experiencing right now that would make them want to purchase what you sell and create a distinctive message with your irresistible offers that inform, influence, and inspire them to want to do business with you.

Every MVP, rockstar entertainer, or business VIP relies on the benefits coaching brings to stay number one in their field. For more insight and clarity I recommend reading “The E Myth Revised” by Michael Gerber. This will be an eye-opening read that will help you develop your responsibility structure.

Use market research to define and find your ideal clients. (Search both state and federal resources for the information you require.)

Time Bandits

Know your audience and remember, you are not in business to sell what you want to sell. However, you are in business to sell what your prospective client wants most to purchase.

Inventory A failure to have a grasp of your inventory can hurt your business in two ways. First, not having sufficient inventory can cost you sales and drastically affect your sales and cash flow. Having too much inventory can tie up valuable cash needed for operations, payroll, and marketing. Too much or too little inventory is a silent cash flow business killer. Studies show that U.S. retailers are sitting on $1.43 of inventory for every $1 of

Trying to go it alone.

Time is the one commodity that none of us have the power to purchase more of. Therefore, prioritizing your time is a business life or death must. Try this simple exercise to create "Incredible Productivity." Make a primary list of every task that will need to be done each day, and I do mean every task. Now divide your primary list into three columns. Column A, column B, and column C. In column A list everything that needs to be done that is guaranteed to generate income. In column B list everything that might, could, or would generate income if the stars and planets were in perfect alignment. Lastly, in column C list all those things that do not generate any income at all. Now, begin with column B — the might, could, and hopefully would column — and

As marketing creates the external perception of your business to your target market client, it will be the internal reality systems such as operating, and policies and procedures that will provide the efficiency and effectiveness of your operations. When external perception and internal reality are working together you will have a recipe to build, grow, and sustain your business and profitability. Try this exercise. Close your eyes and visually walk through a day in your salon or studio. See everything from opening the door, running credit card transactions, and turning off the lights at the end of the day. Now, make a list of every step and every client touch point that took place during that day and write down exactly how each task and client touch point is to be handled. This will help you avoid challenges and provide clear and precise operational systems for every team member to follow.

the ideal client you want to attract it is essential to build a profile of your ideal hire. Make a list of the skills, qualities, and traits required of the perfect hire. Now assign a rating number to each, such as 1-5 with 1 being the lowest score and 5 being the highest score. As you interview, rate the interviewees on each requirement. Then, total up the scores and make your best decision on who stands out from the rest. In addition, do your research on what your potential hire wants most to take away from working with you. Just as you are not in business to sell to your external client what you want to sell but you are in business to sell what they want to buy, the same holds true for your internal client (your team members) who are your potential new hire. Research shows that today’s new hire wants more than just a job. Today’s potential hire wants: ■ Flexible work hours. ■ Real ongoing training. ■ To be heard. ■ To be recognized. ■ To work with like-minded individuals. ■ Guaranteed income and incentives. ■ Opportunities for advancement. ■ Benefits. ■ A voice in how the business operates. When seeking to add to your team to stand out from everyone else looking to hire refrain from posting the same old "me too" ads that stress what you want but instead stress more about what a potential hire will take away. Lastly, position yourself as a careerbuilding expert and not simply a salon

owner looking to fill a chair. Remember, perception is reality, and a career-building expert has a much sweeter sound.

Know Your Numbers Either you will control your numbers or your numbers will control your life. Be sure to invest in software that provides the type of data you need to pivot and make adjustments when necessary. Ask your accountant or CPA what they would recommend as they will be your resource for figuring out what your numbers are telling you. Know your goals, objectives, challenges, and revenue streams. Exercise: Decide the gross dollar goal you want your business to achieve in one year. Then make a detailed list of the products and services you plan to sell to hit your one-year gross dollars goal. Consider add-on hair systems, treatments, color services, wig sales and repair, general salon services, retail products, etc. Now, estimate how much potential revenue you believe each revenue resource will bring in and what percentage of the gross dollar goal each resource is. This will give you an idea of what revenue streams will produce from the highest to the lowest amounts of income and where you want to concentrate your time, money, and marketing for maximum effect.

Failure to Perform Your Due Diligence Although opening your new business can be fun and exciting, know that there will be certain government requirements you will need to meet before you open the doors. ■ Choose a business structure. (sole-proprietorship, partnership, LLC, C-corporation, S-corporation, or B-corporation, etc.)

■ Choose a business name, preferably something that your potential client will relate to and not a name that simply appeals to you. Register the name to protect it. (entity name, trade name, DBA, and domain name. ■ Get your federal and state IDs ■ Apply for local licenses and permits ■ Open a business banking account (Do Not mingle your business money with your personal money.) This makes for bad bookkeeping and Uncle Sam does not like it.

Understand There Are No Entitlements The success of your business is up to you. Transforming your dream into a reality will take a lot of work, passion, and dedication. However, you can do it and it can be done. Remember, in the worst economy in the history of the U.S. someone was making money and in the best economies of the U.S. someone was going out of business. As your business progresses know that chaos and challenges will happen. When they do you will have three choices. ■ Your first choice is to wait for the cavalry to show up and save you. Hate to tell you but, “They aren’t coming.” ■ Your second choice is to hunker down and hope that things will fix themselves and go back to how they used to be. Again, this is not going to happen. ■ This leaves your third and only choice which is to evaluate, collaborate, educate, and innovate because change is inevitable. It’s your baby, it’s your game, it’s your business. Prepare to win by preparing to win. Now get out there, live your dream, and get ready to make it happen. THE LINK MAGAZINE

Achieve the Most Natural Hairline When hairpieces are visible it can often be a source of self-consciousness, making you feel less confident. Milano Illusion Spray can step in to help.

What is Milano Illusion Color Powder Spray? Milano Illusion Spray is a temporary hair color product designed to cover and camouflage the visible regrowth of hair at the roots as well as give an illusion of fuller hair. It comes in the form of a spray, similar to a hairspray, and is available in three colors to match various hair roots. Whether you're dealing with stubborn gray roots, want to create a fuller hairline, or simply need to extend the time between salon appointments, Milano Illusion Spray can be a game-changer.

area, apply on the scalp and roots. To cover a larger area, hold the spray can about 6-8 inches away from your roots. Spray evenly along your visible regrowth, starting from the hairline and working your way back. Use a light, controlled hand to avoid overspraying. Let dry for a minute (or longer). To remove any excess color on the forehead, wet the Illusion Spray Removal Pad with water, and gently wipe where needed. Styling: Style your hair as desired. You can use heated tools, such as straighteners or curling irons, on the sprayed area after it dries for added versatility.

Application: Shake the Milano Illusion Spray several times before applying to create a dry consistency. For precise application spray the bristle side of the hairline brush and brush and rub into the desired areas – such as on either side of the part line and at the front hairline. This step ensures a seamless transition between your natural hair color and the sprayed area. If you need a root touch-up, apply it to the roots. To create the illusion of a fuller scalp

Temporary: Unlike permanent hair color, root spray is temporary. It washes out after shampoo, giving you a softer, cleaner solution without permanent dyes. Camouflage: For those with graying hair, Milano Illusion Spray can effectively hide gray roots, allowing you to maintain a youthful appearance in color and density without the need for frequent color touch-ups. Cost-Effective: Colored root spray is a budget-friendly alternative to salon appointments or at-home hair dye kits. It provides an affordable way to maintain your hair's appearance without breaking the bank.

Here's a step-by-step guide on how it works: Preparation: Start with dry hair. Make sure your hair is free from excess oil or product buildup to ensure the spray adheres well. Then, place the Illusion Protector Band on your forehead in front of your natural hairline. If you have a straight defined part, align the thin band on your natural part line from front to back. If you have an undefined part, rotate the thin band so it is not on the part line.

covers up roots or thinning hair without any long-term commitment.

Why Colored Root Spray is a Beauty Game-Changer Convenience: Colored root spray is a quick and convenient way to refresh your roots without the need for a salon visit. This is especially useful if you have a special event or want to maintain a polished appearance between color treatments. It also aids in blending a thinning hairline with a topper or wig or giving an illusion of a fuller head of hair. With three color options available, Milano Illusions Spray helps your hair look fuller and

The illusion of fullness at the transition points effectively hides the hairpiece. Milano Illusions Spray is a beauty innovation that has gained immense popularity, and for good reason. Its ease of use, versatility, and temporary nature make it a musthave tool for anyone looking to maintain their hair's appearance or give an illusion of fuller hair on top or hairline. Launching Our New FeatherWeft Extensions After three decades in the hair industry, I've been at the forefront of numerous hair extension techniques and products. Among these, the OnStage Beaded Weft has been a standout innovation. This unique product, which uses beads instead of sewing to secure hair wefts, has already made waves in several countries, although it was relatively unknown in the United States until recently.

A few years back, Andy Wright, the original founder of Hair Visions (previously known as OnRite) contacted me about a novel hair extension product from abroad. Initially skeptical, especially upon hearing it involved beads — reminiscent of the I-tip method I was familiar with — I was pleasantly surprised when I received the samples. The OnStage Beaded Weft was different. It used beads to secure wefts and strands, eliminating the need for sewing, a technique I found to be cumbersome and outdated.

and feedback from our diverse clientele.

The success of the OnStage Beaded Weft in the U.S. market has been remarkable over the past three years. Its ease of use, speed of application, and innovative approach have made it popular among hair professionals and clients. Building on this success, we are excited to introduce the FeatherWeft in 2024. This new addition promises to be lighter, more natural-looking, and even easier to blend with one's natural hair, addressing the evolving needs

Looking ahead to its launch next year, the FeatherWeft is poised to be a gamechanger in the world of hair extensions. We are committed to offering a range of options, including the original OnStage Beaded Weft and Beaded Strands, to cater to the diverse preferences of our clients. The FeatherWeft is not just a new product; it's the future of hair extensions, offering a blend of tradition and innovation that will transform how we think about hair styling.

The FeatherWeft represents the culmination of my experience in the hair extension industry, incorporating the best aspects of previous techniques while introducing groundbreaking improvements. As a seasoned professional recognized in various large hair shows across the U.S., I've had the opportunity to test and promote various hair extension products. The FeatherWeft, however, stands out for its innovative design and potential to revolutionize the industry.

Unleashing Innovation: How Walker Tape’s Dedication to Safety is Changing the Industry

“What tapes are safe for skin?” “Is wig tape okay for my skin?” “What tape is safe for skin?” “Will this tape make my skin break out?” “What’s the safest tape to use?”

everyone they interact with, and through their products via a standard of constant improvement and refinement.

These are just a few of the questions that barely scratch the surface of client concerns regarding the safety of hair system adhesives. Questions like these can plague stylists and hair system professionals across salons worldwide, sending them on a quest for answers.

Certified through an advanced cosmetics clinical lab, Walker Tape sent in 10 of their most popular products to be clinically tested through a repeated insult patch tests (RIPT) panel. Those included eight tapes and two preparation products.

These questions are legitimate and concerning. Limited long-term studies have been undertaken on the topic, and while the ingredients in the adhesives can be weighed by their individual safety, it isn’t a concrete answer. For wearers, there can be an unattractive amount of risk involved. For stylists, it can be helpful to have additional knowledge in fielding safety-related questions. As an industry leader and manufacturer of hair system products since before the first "Top Gun" movie showed on the silver screen over 35 years ago, Walker Tape is committed to empowering confidence in

For 2023, Walker Tape to set out to find an official answer to the questions. But did they? Absolutely.

A patch test is a method of reaction testing in which a small amount of a product (this can be tapes, liquid adhesives, and other hair system products in our case!) is placed on an inconspicuous area of the client’s skin, then covered with a patch and left to its own devices for either 24 or 48 hours. A test is considered successful if there are no reactions from the client once the patch is removed. The RIPT panel was performed over a one-month span, with 67 subjects who met the standards for inclusion in a study (i.e., free of dermatological disorders, free of chronic diseases, and passed a preliminary medical history with the lab) participating.

The 67 were then tested with our products under a full patch three times a week in their lab for that month's timeframe. The results of the September panel came back in the final weeks of October, and all ten products were officially classified as “Non-Primary Irritants or Non-Primary Sensitizers”, which means that over repeated usage, they cause no reactions to the skin. “No evidence of any effect” was noted across all 67 study participants of various races, ages, and backgrounds. Once the study was completed, all results and data were sent to a licensed dermatologist for a final approval and painted with a beautiful signature. Walker Tape was ecstatic to hear the results of the study. Each of their tested products will now have its own special “clinically tested” symbol next to its location on their website. The symbol will also be featured in their upcoming 2024 wholesale catalog, along with many other new features and educational information that they’ve added to help stylists and distributors. The hope is that these beginning stages and explanations of RIPT and patch testing will help to relieve any worries stylists and clients may have regarding adhesives or other hair system products. Walker Tape is committed to continued safety initiatives going forward and creating a new standard of assured adhesive safety. Because not only should your clients feel confident in themselves, but they should also feel confident in the products that are used! THE LINK MAGAZINE

Get on the List for These New Product Training Sessions CRLAB will host monthly hair restoration training sessions nationwide in 2024 introducing its new product line, Simply Natural. The inspiration for these training sessions stemmed from our successful introduction of the Michelangelo stock hair system, a 100% all-natural, unprocessed hair system, at the AHLC conference in Nashville in September 2023. The enthusiastic reception from hairstylists, barbers, and hair restoration centers prompted us to develop comprehensive classes that cover topics such as scalp care, application, cut-in, and removal. We are working on the class schedule for our Simply Natural training sessions in 2024. Master stylist and hair restoration expert Danielle Marzella will conduct this training. This training will be offered to all barbers and hair stylists. You do not need to have our CNC or CRLAB license to attend. This training is open to everyone, and our Simply Natural hair systems may also be purchased without having our exclusive partner license and we will be adding more stock system options in the new year.
