Hair News 7

Hair News What’s going on in the wonderful world of Hair?

Words Rhubarb Tuesday

head-line It’s oil the rage! Oil is making big silky waves in the hair ‘bizz. Every brand is trying to incorporate some kind of conditioning oil into their products. Whether it is the increasingly popular Argan Oil from Morocco or some unique, special blend they have created. It’s a must-try for any fan of silky locks; the nourishing benefits have to be seen to be believed! As mentioned, Argan oil is massive right now. Even Lee Stafford is getting in on the act with his new range enriched with the special stuff. Consisting of 5 new products, designed specifically to nourish and smooth tresses, it’s an affordable way of getting some of this magic oil from Morocco into your hair care routine. ALV love Lee Stafford’s Argan Oil Heat Defence Spray, £12.99. It protects against heated appliances whilst adding serious shine to your locks. The range is available exclusively at Boots.

Ojon products are infused with their exclusive golden elixir, a rare oil rich in essential lipids from Central America. It’s so powerful, Ojon are convinced it restores the look and feel of virgin hair! The hero product from the range has to be the incredible Ojon Restorative Hair Treatment that transforms damaged tresses into a hydrated, shiny mane.

What next… will we see other types of oil making headlines in the hair care industry? Instead of drizzling over pasta, will we all start pouring olive oil onto our barnet in a few years to come? alv

ALV’s Guide To Wedding WOW! Kate’s done it, Lily’s done it, Kim K’s going to do it and Beyoncé made it iconic. That’s right! I’m talking about putting a ring on it, getting hitched, yes those good old-fashioned wedding bells. Here at ALV we love a good wedding and that’s why we have put together a bride guide to have you looking divine on your big day! Words Frenchy Beckford issuetwo www.adonislovesvenus.wordpress.com

26 ALV Wedding Special

The Classic Bride Wedding Wisdom

Louise Wood, founder of L’Oréal Colour Trophy 2011 finalist salon The Hair Advice Centre, Englefield Green reveals styles and products perfect for the classic bride. Beehive Half-updo

The sleek half-beehive is a perfect look for a classic bride providing a slight nod to the sixties and is very flattering for a straighter look, while the height at the crown makes it perfect for anyone who wants to wear a tiara on their big day. You can wear the look with a smooth front section for a younger image, whilst maintaining a Hepburn-esque feel that oozes glamour. Half updos are a great option for brides who have dresses with bare-shoulder as they will soften the overall appearance whereas having a full updo could leave the neckline looking too exposed.

Hair Kit Smoothing blow-dry treatment, heat protector, sculpture paste (to create sleekness at sides), strong-hold but flexible hairspray and classic tiara.

Sleek Side Bun

Sleek side buns are another classic beautiful bridal style and give a ballerina type feel, which has proved increasing popular this year. Buns are a fairly strong look to have and therefore are most suited to brides with small, dainty features. Hair accessories tend to suit this style better than tiaras, but a veil over the top of the hair would really complement the look too. It’s a perfect hairdo for dresses with tight bodices and full skirts, further enhancing the ballerina theme and providing a classic wedding day style.

Hair Kit Straightening irons, strong-hold hairspray (gives natural hold and can be brushed-out), shine spray and crystal flower hair accessory.

Try This Alpha H Bespoke Facial

Each amazing bespoke facial treatment is based on a thorough skin analysis and includes a professionally formulated treatment mask. We love the Cryogenic Firming Mask as it regulates the moisture balance of the epidermis making the skin firm, smooth and super supple. issuetwo www.adonislovesvenus.wordpress.com

The Look The Classic Bride 27 “To make Lip Colour last longer, line and fill in lips with Lip Liner Pencil (£13.50) before Applying your Lipstick. If you like the less “done” look of a lipstain, but wish it would stay on longer, try this do-ityourself version using lipstick and blush. Dab lipstick on lips with your fingertip. To lock color in, rub your finger in powder blush that’s a similar shade, then press on lips.” Bobbi Brown

The Boho Bride Wedding Wisdom

Bridal hair is really relaxed and loose this season which makes a nice change from the structured harsh updos of late. No matter what style the bride chooses, it should be worn with a loose wave and with as little product as possible; lots of shine and movement. Braids and plaits are so on trend right now and a perfect way to remain in style on your big day without looking overly fashion forward which can date easily; from a full on French plait to subtle small braids throughout long, loose waves they can be incorporated easily and will look classic and chic in photographs. I always advise my clients to work with as natural a colour as possible on their big day as, the photographs are around for a very long time. This season, blonde’s should opt for vintage creams, champagne blonde and soft rose gold tones to warm up their colour. Similarly, brunettes should keep their hair natural and shiny; copper and caramel tones to add shimmer and depth.

The Glam Bride Wedding Wisdom

The voluminous half up half down style is the perfect ‘do for any glam bride, here is my step by step guide to creating this stunning bridal look. The key to this look is learning the art of backcombing so practice practice and invest in good tools; a backcombing brush rather than comb will care for your hair and prevent breakages. This style works best on hair a day old, but this isn’t always possible or suitable for important events, so begin by;

1 Preparing the hair with a Sculpting Lotion and then blow dry with volume and height by pulling the hair upwards using a round ceramic bristle brush.

2 Separate the front section of the hair and backbrush until the hair stands alone – don’t worry if this looks messy like a birds nest at this stage.

3 Smooth the hair lightly with your backcombing brush and fix in place using pins at your crown.

4 The lengths of your hair can either be worn long and wavy- keep this loose

by tonging the hair with a wide barrel tong to about 3 inches from the loose, or sleek and straight.

5 Finish with a mist of strong hold hairspray. This looks works well with a veil and can be altered depending on how daring a bride you are!

Ian Davies, Creative Director, Ocean Hairdressing

Try This The Strawberry Laser

The non invasve, 20 minute treatment that could make you a wedding dress size smaller! When the laser paddles are placed onto the skin, the cold red laser beams penetrate the skin, just deep enough to reach the layers of fat and basically get rid of it! Prices from £100 per session with 3-5 inches loss on average! issuetwo www.adonislovesvenus.wordpress.com

The Look The Glam Bride 31 “Don’t go to a tanning bed right before your wedding. If you want more colour, use a self tanner. Test the product weeks before the date. Apply it several days before the wedding in case you need to make corrections.” Bobbi Brown

32 ALV Wedding Special

The Retro Bride Wedding Wisdom

I absolutely love creating bridal styles; it’s the most important day of a bride’s life and everything must be taken into account when choosing a hairtyle from the dress to the venue and everything in between. Here are two trends which are very popular now and have filtered into todays retro bridal looks;

The low bun a la Natalie Portman

Separate hair into a middle parting and pull into a sleek, low ponytail. Use a bun donut to ensure the style lasts all day, and backcomb gently to add fullness and volume. If you have particularly fine hair, add some extensions for more thickness. Kirby the style in place, and spritz with a good shine spray for a natural and healthy look.

Vintage Marcell waves a la Dita Von Teese

This is perfect for those who want to look a bit different and unique on their wedding day, and suitable for those with short hair. Set the front of the hair and fringe in small rollers and blast with a hairdryer until dry. Remove the rollers, and brush into a smooth wave. Pin behind the ear, and style any longer length hair in a low bun. Add a chic accessory for a truly vintage inspired style.

Martin Crean, Artistic Director, Mode

Try This Ninas Hair Parlour for a 1-2-1 Vintage Hair/Make up Super Class For £370 you get: 1 A haircut and finished style 2 An old fashioned set under the original 1950’s dryer, accompanied by the glass of champagne and chocolate truffles 3 A tailored lesson on how to do 3 styles of your choice except finger/Marcel waving. 4 A make up class with a professional make up artist relevant to an era of your choice. The Look The Retro Bride 33 “Aim to have your wedding day hair trial at least 5 months in advance. This will give you an opportunity to get your colour sorted out and if you need a hair piece, then you have time to order it and match to your own hair colour. Plus if your ideas and your stylist are not inline, then it gives you an opportunity to shop around.” Gina Conway

Homedics me my elos

™

Introducing the next generation of hair removal! me my elos™ is a new, groundbreaking development in home-use hair removal technology bought to you by leading brand Homedics. Words Frenchy Beckford

issuetwo www.adonislovesvenus.wordpress.com

This issue Homedics me my elos 41 Lasers were actually invented in the mid-60s, but it wasn’t until the mid-70s that the technology had evolved enough to be used for dermatological applications. After years of research into how to develop the use of lasers further Dr Michael Kreindel and Dr Shiman Eckhouse invented elos™ technology in 1991. elos™ technology uses a combination of Bipolar Radio Frequency (RF) and Optical Energy. The Light energy is converted to thermal energy heating up the hair shaft and subsequently the hair follicle, whilst the RF energy is attracted to the pre-heated follicle, heating it further and inhibiting hair re-growth. Is it safe? Yes! Assuming the correct elos™ level was chosen according to skin tone and all instructions were followed using me™ should be safe and painless. At most removal of hair will cause localised redness or minor skin irritations, but this will only last a short time and as with any new treatment it’s advisable to test a small area before full use.

When can I expect to see results? You should see 89% hair reduction after four treatments, obviously this may vary from person to person, but following the full recommended guidelines of four treatments with intervals of two weeks will give you the bet possible results.

How do I know what elos™ level to select? me™ is suitable for users with Fitzpatrick skintones I-V: I - White, very fair, red or blonde hair, blue eyes, freckles II - White, fair, red or blonde hair, blue hazel or green eyes III - Cream white, fair with any eye or hair colour IV - Brown, typical Mediterranean caucasian skin V - Dark brown, mid-eastern skin types Users with blonde red or grey hair can also effectively use me™, however you will need to use the provided epilator attachment to achieve the full efficacy of the elos™ technology.

Can I use the me™ on my face? Yes! Clinical trials have shown that it is safe for use on the face below the cheekbones for skin types I-III. You must read and carefully follow ‘the’ instructions and use the included facial kit.

Where can I buy it? me is available in the UK and Ireland exclusively from Boots priced at £449.99 alv

1 Prep your skin with a light foundation, or if you’re lucky enough to have great skin a skin balancing primer is perfect! 2 Choose a bright shadow and apply on the crease of the eye in a half moon shape, bringing it right up to the brow-line and the out to the corners. Build up the pigment as much or as little as you want, for ultra-bright blend the shadow with a little water before applying. 3 Use a warm pink blusher concentrating the colour around the apples of your cheeks. 4 Make sure your lips are super smooth before applying colour! Brights Beauty 45

Top Tips If you’re not sold on bright make-up try introducing colour on your nails! Keep them long with a modern oval shape and add a glossy shine finish to protect the colour. Lips are a great way to do brights this season! To create the perfect pout apply a neutral colour to the lips first, try a light covering of foundation over the lips, this will neutralise the natural lip shade and make the lipstick last longer. Apply your colour over the top for long-lasting lusciousness.

A subtle line of bright eyeshadow is a great way to introduce colour to the face, be as daring as you like with the depth of the line and shade choice, but keep the rest of your makeup simple to avoid overdoing it

Cool Colour Are you ready to go bold with your hair colour? Whether it’s a dip-dye-do or coloured extensions, there are plenty of ways to nail this trend.

Get the look

Red as we all know is the biggest head turner when it comes to hair colour! Funnily enough there is a shade in the red spectrum that is for just about everyone. But getting it right is the most important thing! 1 For the pale girls with light eyes, the warmer coppery tones from strawberry blonde through to titian (think Florence Welch or Lily Cole) are a great option and compliment the delicate nature of their colouring. The juicy spicy colours work by warming up the complexion and intensifying issuetwo www.adonislovesvenus.wordpress.com

the eyes! 2 If you are olive skinned and have brown or green eyes then you can pull of the real intensive shades like fire, vermillion and true pillar box (Rihanna ) They really work well with the darker skins and can be a really fun flirty statement. 3 Dark skin and eyes can also carry of the vibrant reds for a real loud statement, but the deeper more damson reds and almost burgundy or at its darkest Black tulip (Cheryl Cole) can have a sultry and decedent effect. 1 The key to this look is femininity, use a mineral based foundation to create a soft natural looking base to the skin. 2 Curl your lashes and if you must wear mascara keep it to a minimum, the eyeshadow will do the talking. 3 Apply a light wash of eyeshadow into the crease of the eye up to the brow line. Then take a slightly darker shade of a similar coulour and apply at the outside corners of the eye blending into the middle and down to the outside corners. 4 Accentuate the eye colour by keeping lips very nude and simple. issuetwo www.adonislovesvenus.wordpress.com

Sorbet Beauty 53

Top Tips Keep pastels sophisticated by sticking to one placement, don’t go overboard! Before choosing a sorbet shade think about your skin-tone, pale girls avoid blues and dark-skinned girls go for it! You have the perfect base. If this look feels a little too ‘frosty’ for you try using a creamy matte shadow, it creates a much more delicate shade.

1 This look definitely calls for bronzed skin and a great foundation, apply this with a brush and skip the powder unless you need it on the t-zone to mattify shine. 2 To get the required ‘glow’ use a bronzer in the hollow of the cheeks AND above the brow, remember to blend well to ensure a natural gloss. 3 To create the perfect eye apply brown and gold shades with a slight shimmer, apply on the lid and inside corner of the eye in a half moon shape to give a 3d effect and take it around to the lower lash line to frame the eye. 4 Leave the lips neutral, a dot of natural pink lipstick will be more than enough for this look. issuetwo www.adonislovesvenus.wordpress.com

Marc Jacobs

70s Beauty 57

Top Tips The modern way to wear bronzer is to sculpt the hollows of the face and create contour with a cream colour shade, then use a sweep of bronzer on the nose, forehead chin and apples. This look is not about eyeliner, especially in an obvious way, just use it to fill in the gaps in the lash line by using dot-like strokes.

This look is a fantastic cross between a glamorous and boho ‘do. It has that s shaped curl that everyone is craving at the moment and is bang on trend for the summer season. 1 To re-create the easy, undone waves firstly put your hair into a centre parting, 2 Starting at the front of your head take sections of hair and using a styling wand wrap the hair around the tool away from your face. 3 Repeat this process, with other sections of hair and mirror this on the opposite side. The must have tool to achieve the look, is a styling wand. To ensure you choice the correct one, opt for a wand that starts thicker at the top and goes thinner at the bottom to give you the desired curl shape.
