In the Athens Seminars, students will participate in experiential team-building and fundamental leadership skills development activities. They will explore! “Ethical Challenges” in a series of seminars, simulations and role playing workshops. Non-ACS Athens participants can connect with this strand of the program through a series of on-line activities. In the St. Louis University strand of the program, students will learn to fly in state-of-the-art flight simulators and develop teamwork skills in an amazing air traffic control tower simulation (picking up a bit of applied math and physics along the way). They will learn about the nature and power of storytelling, how to structure a good nsrrative and how to turn the story into a well made documentary film in an adaptation of SLU’s Digital Narratives class. In the process, they will learn practical research, interviewing, IT and filmmaking skills: all essential 21st century communications skills. They will be active participants in one of SLU’s student service projects, and they will have the opportunity to engage with a number of leaders in the St. Louis community who have had a positive impact on the life of their community. Students will keep a learning journal in which they record and reflect upon the questions that arise and the discoveries that they make throughout the program. By the end of their time in St. Louis, students will have completed a digital storyboard for and a rough cut of a short documentary film that tells some form of “leadership story,” drawn from the students’ experiences in the different strands of the course. They will present their work-in-progress in a public setting at the end of the St. Louis session. By September 1, 2013, they will submit their completed documentary film to both St. Louis and Athens faculty. Films will be screened in a minidocumentary film festival in the Theater at ACS. (The festival will be live-streamed so that non ACS Athens participants and St. Louis faculty team can be part of the celebration.} Upon successful completion of the program, students will be awarded one ACS Athens elective credit.
