DAN BLOCK Block Party A St Louis Connection

lock Party is a joyous event, and the latest album from saxophonist and clarinetist Dan Block on Miles High Records. The album spans several generations of jazz. The musicians are fellow transplants from Block’s native St. Louis to the jazz mecca of NY City, along with his brother and guitarist, Rob Block. Block feels comfortable expressing himself in traditional Dixieland jazz bands as well as bop, modal jazz and beyond. That scope is relected on Block Party. The album also features bassist and St. Louis native Neal Caine, Tokyoborn pianist Tadataka Unno and drummer Aaron Kimmel. www.danblockmusic.com

Kye’s crisp playing, layered in swirls of pizzicato arpeggios and percussive elements, forms the foundation for clever and reflexive lyrics and a tender, urgent voice.

LESLIE PINTCHIK You Eat My Food, You Drink My Wine, You Steal My Girl!

I

t is a perfect fit for the sharp-elbows vibe of the title piece by pianist/composer Pintchik, with its sambafunk groove, understated humor and fender-bender of an ending. It is also the perfect title for Pintchik’s new album, which features six of her original tunes and two standards. Pintchik has penned a collection of songs overflowing with warmth, humor, tenderness, depth and smarts—without forsaking her razor-sharp edge.

SABATON The Last Stand

T

he Swedish band, Sabaton, researches their battle topics to ensure the songs paint accurate and objective portraits of the historical event they’re singing about, which are narrated from a first-person view as a soldier caught in the line of fire. Sabaton aims to remain politically neutral in their role as musical war historians. They have reached their position as heavy metal’s AAA-torchbearer after playing endless amount of unforgettable live shows. The Last Stand is more evidence of Sabaton’s abilities. www.sabaton.net

JUSTIN TIMBERLAKE Man of the Woods

Man of the Woods” thrusts Timberlake into the funk, soul and disco of the 1970s. Timbaland and the Neptunes handle the vast majority of the production. Check out “Higher Higher,” a brilliant 70s homage. Chris Stapleton shows up a few times as a songwriter, on guitar, and on “Say Something,” in duet. His writing, especially on “The Hard Stuff,” is evocative, and on “Say Something,” he sings with a true purpose. The guitars and basslines on this album are quite punchy. But Timberlake is at his best on the title tune, “Man of the Woods.” www.amazon.com

New 2018/19 Season

E

xpecting a bit of a letdown after our grand 50th anniversary celebration? Don’t. Music Director Michael Francis has put an enormous amount of thought into programming every concert in our most wide-ranging season yet, which starts in the fall. “It’s our first chance to show where we’re going as an orchestra in our new era,” he said. Looking beyond the big-name works – Beethoven’s Symphony No. 5, Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue – there’s so much more to adore. Here’s the inside scoop on 5 Tampa Bay Times Masterworks concerts you’ll fall in love with. A CHILD OF OUR TIME (Nov. 9-11) Don’t know it? Understandable. This is the first time TFO will perform Michael Tippett’s oratorio, featuring The Master Chorale of Tampa Bay. What’s to love: A beautiful work with a meaningful story. Tippett, a pacifist, was inspired by Kristallnacht when he composed the oratorio, so it was a natural choice to commemorate the 80th anniversary of the “Night of Broken Glass” in partnership with the Florida Holocaust Museum. THE PLANETS (Feb. 15-17, 2019) You probably know Holst’s The Planets, but this concert includes a hidden gem that is dear to Michael Francis’ heart: music as a living art form. He and his wife, Cindy, are sponsoring a new work by University of South Florida Associate Professor Baljinder Sekhon, as yet unnamed. What’s to love: When Francis programs a season, his mission is two-pronged: explore the Masterworks in a new light and discover new music. A MIDSUMMER NIGHT’S DREAM (Feb. 22-24, 2019). Everybody can hum Mendelssohn’s famous “Wedding March” from this work, but the orchestra will go all out to perform a complete and enhanced version based on William Shakespeare’s play. What’s to love: Pretty much nothing excites Francis more than Michael Francis collaborating with local organizations, because it uses music to unite the community. BRAHMS’ PIANO CONCERTO NO. 1 (March 29-31, 2019) Even if you’re already a fan of the Brahms, the rest of this program is more awesome than you realize. What’s to love: First of all, Michael Francis is stoked about working with pianist Benjamin Grosvenor in his TFO debut. “He is one of the great talents of our time. He’s now playing with all the major orchestras -- and he’s coming to play with us.” MAHLER’S SYMPHONY NO. 1 (May 3 & 4, 2019) No matter what you think of Mahler’s Symphony No. 1, you’re sure to love the two percussion pieces on this program: Steve Reich’s Music for Pieces of Wood and Andrew Norman’s Switch, featuring pioneering classical percussionist Colin Currie. What’s to love: There’s an impressive percussion setup stretching across the front of the stage for Switch, with Currie constantly on the move. The Florida Orchestra: Performs regularly at the Straz Center in Tampa, Mahaffey in St. Petersburg and Ruth Eckerd Hall in Clearwater. Most tickets start at $15. Available at floridaorchestra.org or 727.892.3337 and 1.800.662.7286. www.AccentOnTampaBay.com

JIKO’s “The Cooking Place” at Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge

Story and photos by Melissa Wolcott Martino and Al Martino

O

ne of the most popular dining spots at Walt Disney World’s myriad choices of fine restaurants can be found at the Animal Kingdom Lodge — Jiko “The Cooking Place.” Folks seem to gravitate to the cuisine that is not commonplace. Traditional inspirations coming from the continent of Africa are fused with Indian and Mediterranean cuisine into the dishes you will find on Jiko’s very appealing menu. The decor has a modern, comfortable motif, with soft lighting and artistic touches of Africa.

W

e hadn’t been to Jiko’s in years and decided to see what’s new. The food choices are seasonal, so you can always look forward to new taste treats. The wines you will find at Jiko’s will also be from Africa or use grapes grown in Africa, providing some provocative tastes with over 135 to choose from. Some African beers are available, and the cocktails are also African inspired. Za’atar Spiced Beet Salad

B

reads and flatbreads utilize common African ingredients like flax seeds and goat butter and are all made in-house. Dips such as the hummus with garlic, cumin and sundried olives, the mayo chutney, and the butternut squash with fried spices and vegetables bring the already flavorful breads alive.

Clever wine display

O

ne of the most popular appetizers is the Grilled Wild Boar Tenderloin with mealie pap (sort of a gritty corn), chakalaka (vegetable relish), truffle oil, and micro cilantro. The wine we tried with the boar was a Warwick Old Bush Vine Pinotage, grapes of which were grown in Africa. This wine goes great with pretty much any food. The Za’atar Spiced Beet Salad with roasted heirloom beets, yogurt, and Asian pear tasted as pretty as it looked. If you like Greek spanakopita, you will like Jiko’s Inguday Tibs in Brik. It’s a crispy filo filled with mushrooms, spinach and cheese, with an apple and curry vinaigrette. Manti Dumplings have a spicy tomato sauce, saffron yogurt and mint chutney. This was served with a Cederberg Buketraube wine. The grape is only grown in Africa, and Jiko’s is the only resort in the USA to serve it. continued on next page

T

he entrees are amazing and bursting with flavor. The Moroccan Mrouzia-Style Lamb Tagine elicited the most oohs and ahs at the table. It was cooked with saffron and had a sweet/salty taste. Served with parsnip silk, root spinach, Medjool date smoor, and a slightly acidic pomegranate glaze. The melt-in-your-mouth Oak-grilled Filet Mignon was served with pumpkin pap isidudu, Brussels sprouts, and caramelized onions. Seared Hokkaido Sea Scallops were sweet and buttery and were served with a delicious braised pork belly, red kuri squash smear, wild mushrooms, and chermoula (relish marinade). A crisp, sweet, Morgenster Sauvignon Blanc/Semillion Blend wine was served with this dish and is also only found at Jiko’s. Another lovely entree was the Durham Ranch Elk Loin, with celery root puree, hibiscus-candied apples, turnip atjar (vegetable pickle), and lemon-elk jus.

You can enjoy watching the cooks prepare meals in the open kitchen area. 82

by Ben Montgomery

he GIs called her Joey. Hundreds owed their lives to the tiny Filipina woman who was one of the top spies for the Allies during World War II, stashing explosives, tracking Japanese troop movements, and smuggling maps across enemy lines for Gen. Douglas MacArthur. Josefina Guerrero walked through gunfire to bandage wounds and close the eyes of the dead. Her valor earned her the Medal of Freedom, but the thing that made her an effective spy was a disease that was destroying her.Guerrero suffered from leprosy, which so horrified the Japanese they refused to search her. After the war, army chaplains found her in a leper colony and campaigned for the US government to welcome a foreigner with leprosy. The fight brought her celebrity, which she used to speak for other sufferers. However, the notoriety haunted her after the disease was arrested, and she had to find a way to disappear.

THE BEEKEEPER’S DAUGHTER

Black Opal Books www.blackopalbooks.com

by Jane Jordan

A

nnabel Taylor, a beekeeper’s daughter, grows up wild and carefree on the moors of England in the late 1860s, following in the footstep of her mother, a beautiful witch. Annabel’s friend is Jevan, who lives his life on the verge of destruction. His devotion to Annabel is full of twists and turns. But when Jevan travels to London to receive an education, Annabel is devastated. Then Alex-the heir to the Saltonstall legacy--comes into her life. Alex is arrogant and self-assured, but is bewitched by Annabel’s beauty, and feels drawn to her by something he can’t explain. Alex and Annabel are worlds apart socially, but that doesn’t stop him from demanding her hand in marriage. When Annabel refuses, she is forced into an impossible situation, which leads Jevan to believe she has betrayed him, regardless of the fact that her decision saves him from the hangman’s noose. Disturbing revelations thrust Annabel into a startling reality, where nothing is as it seems. Jane Jordan began writing seriously in 2004, after she first visited Exmoor in England. She was captivated by the local myths and legends, and her first novel, Ravens Deep (her gothic vampire trilogy) was released. Gaining more insight into the history and mysteries of ancient places, and having been intrigued by the supernatural, inspiration came for The Beekeeper’s Daughter. www.AccentOnTampaBay.com

Why Would Anyone Be at a 6:5 Table? Dear Mark: Using Basic Strategy, I am a firm believer in never taking even money on a blackjack. I detest games that offer a 6:5 payout vs. the normal 3:2. If one is forced to play a 6:5 game due to availability, is it still correct not to take even money on a 6:5 blackjack using basic strategy? Herb C. I begin with Pilarski’s rule #5: Never sit at a 6:5 table. Rule #9: At a 3:2 table, never take even money/insurance. Let’s begin with even money: Players who are risk-averse, or proverbially put, “plus valet in manibus avis unica quam dupla silvis,” which loosely translated from Latin means, “A bird in the hand is worth more than two in the woods” tend to always take even money. They figure this maxim points out that by passing up even money for your blackjacks, you risk losing a sure thing. I also recommend NEVER playing 6:5 Blackjack. Using the

math of the game, and using a 3:2 payoff as a baseline, a reduction to 6:5 payoffs on blackjack increases the house edge by 1.39 percent. Here’s the thing, Herb. Giving an additional 1.39 percent back to the casino is humongous, making it a larger percentage return than the entire house edge on the rest of the game.

Furthermore, because the math for an even money payoff on a 6:5 game isn’t advantageous for the casino, the even money option is typically prohibited on a 6:5 game. Although I haven’t personally seen it offered, if you come upon it, then I am neutral on taking an even money payoff. Although its expected value (EV) is even, the casino still has a sizable edge over your play. My best advice, Herb, is to let the casino pay their own light bills, and for you to take the 65 game out of your gaming repertoire altogether. www.AccentOnTampaBay.com

Dear Mark: Are you allowed to ask a dealer if he or she is running hot or cold? Jenny S. Of course, you can, Jenny. Just ask. As to whether that information will do you any good on a randomly shuffled game, sorry, it won’t. Besides, whatever answer you do get from a dealer doesn’t necessarily mean you’ll be getting the truth. For example, if a dealer is standing on a dead game, arms crossed in a standoffish position, it is a certainty he or she will say HOT! That uninterested stance is a dead giveaway that the dealer doesn’t want to be bothered. Likewise, some dealers will recognize a player from the past – for instance, a nontipper – and will articulate, unequivocally, how HOT they are, hoping the inquiring player will move along. Personally, I always found it amusing that most players would NOT wander off to avoid the wrath of my dealing when I told them “I’m hot,” but instead, saw me as some gambling conquest to be made. “Okay, Buddy, take your best shot.” Yet, in the end, I’d beat them hardheartedly, but not because of my averred “I’m hot” reference. Their eventual beat down was always based on the combination of the math of the game and their poor play.

The Market for Frank Lloyd Wright Designed Objects

F

rank Lloyd Wright (1867-1959) designed private residences, buildings of worship, office buildings, schools and ateliers, urban civic architecture, and even art museums. Wright united the indoors with the outdoors in his buildings. He highlighted landscape vistas, gardens, and waterfalls. His Prairie style structures focused on what he called organic architecture which made his buildings stand out in the realm of 20th Century architectural history. Wright was interested in devising architectural plans that encouraged visitors to make a pilgrimage to the front door of his private homes as is the case with the famous Robie House on the campus of the University of Chicago. He thoughtfully designed stained glass windows to fit within an overall design aesthetic. For instance. Wright’s colorful stained glass windows for the children’s playhouse of the Avery Coonley House in Riverside, IL focused on the family’s active lifestyle with young children. Wright’s buildings made the hearth the center of the home. The nucleus of his residential structures, the fireplace served as a meeting place in Wright’s home designs with ample seating and room for a large roaring fire as is the case in Wright’s architectural design of the massive hearth in the Darwin D. Martin House in Buffalo, NY. Wright designed all aspects of his buildings which became a mainstay in the history of architecture. It follows that while many of Wright’s buildings have been on the real estate market for high prices, his furnishings and design elements from these houses are captivating to collectors. The market for Wright’s design objects indicate the current interest in architectural salvage, vintage and antique furnishing and accessories. Wright was a highly respected designer from the foundation of his buildings to the furnishings. Wright designed windows in stained and leaded glass, chairs, tables, serving pieces, built in seating spaces and storage areas,

textiles, carpets, light fixtures, planters, sculptures, etc. These objects have become of great interest to collectors. Some interesting Wright objects demonstrate the interest in architectural elements as a sector of the antiques market as well as the way collectors are engaged to live among Wrightian objects. Popular Wright objects range from light fixtures and stained-glass windows to lounge chairs and carpet remnants. Here are the top Wright objects that have sold on the market in the last year showing the interest in Frank Lloyd Wright as a designer: • Hanging lamp, John Storer House, Hollywood, CA, 1923 - $36,000 • Lounge chair, Clarence Sondern House, Kansas City, MO, 1939 - $15,000 • Stained glass window, Lake Geneva Hotel, Lake Geneva, WI, 1911 - $10,000 • Stained glass window, Avery Coonley House, Riverside, IL 1908 - $8,500 • Leather chair, Francis W. Little House, Wayzata, MN, circa 1902-03 - $4,750 • Standing oak desk, Frank L. Smith Bank, Dwight, IL, 1905 $4,500 • Upholstered bench, Unitarian Meeting House, Madison, WI, 1951 - $3,500 • Waste basket, Larkin Building, Buffalo, NY, circa 1906 - $2,100 • Bound carpet remnant, Arizona Biltmore, Phoenix, AZ, 1929 - $300 • Buffalo Pottery china plate with Larkin Co. logo by Wright, circa 1905 - $150

As Wright enthusiasts consider taking on the project of buying and updating a Wright home or building, many lovers of modern architecture are quite satisfied with a planter, waste basket or rug designed by Wright. Today, these architectural elements are become much easier to find and afford. os Mastiha is a unique spirit from the island of Chios, Greece. It is a clear spirit with a sweet taste, which derives from the rare and natural tree resin cultivated exclusively on the small island. The Mastiha Tree, which is also known as the Crying Tree, only grows and is cultivated on Chios. Nowhere else in the world has it been able to take root, which makes it exclusively Greek. Created by the Ambrosia Group, Fos Mastiha is made from the best ingredients and tradition involving a delicate process of aging, distillation, secret ingredients and special formulas. Fos Mastiha can be enjoyed by itself of mixed in different cocktails. It is great as an aperitif or digestif as the Matiha has many digestive benefits. During the Byzantine years, Chios becomes famous, and Mastiha is known as a luxury item, and the emperor’s favorite drink. Multnomah Falls, Oregon

magnificent 611-foot-tall waterfall is located just a 30- minute drive outside of Portland, Oregon. Visiting Multnomah Falls lets you experience the power and beauty of nature up close. From the parking area, it’s only a 5-minute walk to the base of the falls. According to Native American lore, Multnomah Falls was created to win the heart of a young princess who wanted a hidden place to bathe. Although you can see the top portion of the falls from the highway, to view both tiers you have to walk to the viewing area located in a carved-out opening in the rock face. For an even closer view, walk another several hundred feet up to reach Benson Bridge, which spans the falls at the first tier’s misty base. The bridge is named for Simon Benson, a Portland businessman who owned the falls in the early 1900s. Before his death, Benson gave Multnomah Falls to the City of Portland, which later transferred ownership to the USDA Forest Service.
