AMERICAN VICTORY will host viewing of Tampa’s annual July 4th Fireworks aboard this historic World War II merchant steamship and national landmark, Tuesday, July 4, 2017, 6:30pm – 9:30pm. The S.S. AMERICAN VICTORY offers the “best view in Tampa” for watching the celebrated fireworks display. 2017 HEROES BALL “Under the Big Top”
T
he 2017 Heroes Ball, held at the Bryan Glazer Family JCC recently, featured a tribute to Joan Steinbrenner, who was recognized for her contribution to the Steinbrenner Children’s Emergency and Trauma Center at St. Joseph’s Children’s Hospital. Chaired by Robert and Lorraine Dutkowsky, the event raised a lot of much needed money for the St. Joseph’s Children’s Hospital while providing guests with a rousing good time. The circus theme of the black tie event included arcade-style games and silent and live auctions. After passed hors d’oeuvres and an open bar in one tent, guests were guided to another tent with lovely set tables and a delicious sit-down dinner. The entertainment for the evening was provided by Party On The Moon — one of the BEST party bands we’ve ever seen. The 12-piece band kept the crowd up on their feet dancing for hours, covering favorite tunes from the 70’s through today. They are well-known in the private party circuit for their great vocals, musicianship and showmanship. So it will be a win-win for Universal. We caught up with Wade at the July 15th Shave or Not Shave event at Steinbrenner Field at a Tampa Yankees game, where he threw out the first pitch. How does he feel about keeping or losing his beard? He’s a bit mum on the subject, but did say his wife likes the beard. He also said he’s been growing it for about 6 weeks. Wade has always been a bit of a “beard rebel” having gone up against George Steinbrenner, who Should he or shouldn’t he? wanted him to shave before the Yankees 1996 World Series. He said no. The 3rd baseman had a long amazing career in baseball before retiring from the Tampa Bay Rays in 2009. Starting out in 1982 with the Boston Red Sox where he won all 5 of his career batting titles, then with the Yankees with whom he won the World Series, and finally with the Rays where he scored his 3,000th hit. Where does his loyalty lie these days?

Oldsmar Cares For Their Own Story and photos by Barbara Mcgovern
I
love small towns. There are quite a few charming towns in the Tampa Bay Area but I think Oldsmar is unique. They hit all the right buttons. Several years ago Oldsmar was considered rather dull, and it was. Lo and behold, the ugly duckling became a swan. Oldsmar has an amazing dining scene, fine hotels, beautiful new homes and a great commute to Tampa, St. Pete and the beach. One thing that is unique about Oldsmar is the way it takes care of its own. There is a organization in town, Oldsmar Cares, that was started in 1997 by Sharon Patch at the Oldsmar Community United Methodist Church. They provided help to their neighbors in town that needed assistance with rentals and utilities. Soon they added a food pantry that gave out 100,000 pounds of food each year. Over the years they added additional services such as a “clothing closet”, dental services for children, legal counseling, health screening, educational grants, holiday programs and Oldsmar Works, a job service. Last year Oldsmar Cares

provided more than $75,000 in food and financial assistance. Oldsmar Cares is an all-volunteer, non-profit 501(c)(3) charitable organization. For the past several years they held a Wine and Food Gala which has become their main fund raiser. The entire community has supported this and the other events that they hold. This support has helped this amazing organization grow to what it is now. Due to

their success, they have outgrown the tiny cottage and recently, to celebrate their 20th Anniversary, Oldsmar Cares broke ground on a new building so they can continue their mission to help all of their neighbors. The new 3,000 square foot building is being built adjacent to their present location on State Rd 580. The new building will provide more room for food storage, an expanded food pantry, and a bigger Clothes Closet. There will be an area for tutoring children and an office for Career Counseling. This Premier group will have their names on the bronze plaque in the new building. The groundbreaking event was held on Friday, June 16. he Clearwater Jazz Holiday announced their exciting lineup for the 2017 Festival being held October 19 - 22 at Coachman Park, and revealed the 38th Annual CJH Poster at their celebratory party hosted at Lokey Motors Clearwater recently. Such stellar acts as Kenny Loggins w/Michael McDonald are on the CJH roster, as well as The Avett Brothers, Scott Bradlee’s Postmodern Jukebox, Big Bad Voodoo Daddy, The Temptations w/The Four Tops, and many more artists filling out the 4-day festival. Silent and live auctions brought in money to support their programs. Also attendees brought in food donations of rice and beans for the Pinellas Community Foundation to help children in need. his album from artist/composer Max Richter is music crafted from Wayne McGregor’s ballet production Woolf Works, a ballet triptych inspired by the life and works of English novelist Virginia Woolf. It features powerful, compelling, emotional music, encompassing electronic textures and soundscapes, as well as orchestral episodes. ‘Woolf’ showcases different sides of Max’s vast palette of sounds, including upbeat, Arpeggiator pieces. It shows Max’s passion for both lavish string and piano melodies, but also his electronic side. The first track on the album features spoken words by Virginia Woolf herself, from a BBC recording from 1937.

he Florida The Florida Orchestra is boldly going where it’s never gone before: combining the Music of Star Trek & Star Wars into one stellar concert as part of its Raymond James Pops series. arnival Paradise made it’s inaugural voyage to Havana on June 29th with a sendoff held in the Queen Mary room aboard the ship. Carnival’s Executive VP of Guest Shipboard Operations Gus Antorcha; Paul Anderson, president & CEO, Port Tampa Bay; and Ybor City Museum Society reps and guests enjoyed some of the sights, sounds and tastes of Cuba before departure. A feature of the event was a 10 foot-long Cuban Sandwich — “The World’s Largest Cuban Sandwich At Sea”. Because of a rivalry as to who makes the “original” Cuban between Tampa and Miami, half of the sandwich was made the Miami way and the other half the Tampa way. The whole thing was made with white bread, five pounds of sliced ham, 50 pounds of marinated and roasted pork, six pounds of Swiss cheese, one gallon of dill pickles and mustard and mayonnaise, but the Tampa half had one extra ingredient— Genoa salami. (We prefer the Tampa style!) A buffet set-up also presented a delicious selection of Cuban-inspired food. Guests enjoyed the live Cuban music while indulging in food and specialty cocktails. Also on hand were the folks from Tabanero Cigars who demonstrated the age-old technique of hand-rolling cigars. Paul Anderson noted that the economic impact of Carnival’s operation in Tampa is substantial. A single port stop from an average size cruise ship generates more than $350,000 in direct economic input to the community. Carnival also made a $25,000 donation to Tampa’s Ybor City Museum Society, a non-profit which preserves the unique heritage of Ybor City. The send-off celebration certainly whetted our appetite for a cruise to Havana to experience some of the exciting port excursions they offer, as well as the ship itself, which offers plenty of amusement and relaxation — and, of course, lots and lots of great food! Carnival Paradise makes four- and five-day cruises to Havana through October. Five-day voyages add a stop in either Cozumel, Mexico; or Key West, FL. ig Cat Rescue is the world’s largest accredited sanctuary devoted to big cats. The nonprofit sanctuary is home to more than 70 lions, tigers, leopards, cougars, servals, caracals, and various other exotic cats. BCR has built enclosures in a natural habitat with foliage and shelter on 55 acres in the Citrus Park area of north Tampa. They provide the best nutritional and medical care possible, and have conditioning and enrichment programs to provide the cats physical and psychological well being. MENUS: THE EPICUREAN EXPERIENCE Thru Dec 23

his exhibit uses original menus as a starting point to explore the fine dining at the Tampa Bay Hotel and other grand Florida resorts from 1891 to 1932. These rarely exhibited menus draw visitors into the conversation of Victorian food, the source of food, its preparation, etiquette, fashion, and utensils that blend together to create the Victorian epicurean experience. They will briefly touch on menu art and children in the Hotel dining room. This exhibit displays original artifacts, including menus, photos, clothing, and utensils from the Tampa Bay Hotel and other Florida hotels. At the Tampa Bay Hotel, and other Florida resorts, meals were not simply about eating, but instead were a fine dining experience. Thought and care were put into food choices, decorations, place settings, music selection, and of course, menu design. Dressing for dinner often took over an hour, and meals could be a full ten courses. Meals for special events and holidays were even more elaborate. Included in the exhibit are menus from holidays.

PANDORA: The World of Avatar High Expectations Are Met And Surpassed

he long wait is over. Pandora: the World of Avatar is now open in Disney’s Animal Kingdom at Walt Disney World. People who liked the movie “Avatar” will love Pandora. People who loved “Avatar” will be blown away by Pandora. With the combined genius of James Cameron, Joe Rohde (the design and production of Pandora) and Disney imagineers, the movie set has been brought to life (minus the actual floating worlds, which would have been impossible even for Disney.) Strange vegetation mixed in with earthly vegetation creates the feeling that you are, indeed, somewhere else. We got to experience Pandora with a media sneak peek before opening day, and so were able to explore everything without too much of a crowd. Disney Chairman and CEO Bob Iger and Avatar director James Cameron opened the new $500M park. Several of the cast members were on hand, including Zoe Saldana, Sam Worthington, and Sigourney Weaver, as well as some other film dignitaries.

e entered into the Valley of Mo’ara, and first came upon a Flaska Reclinata, a Pandoran plant that receives it’s energy from touch. Rub certain glowing parts of the plant and it shoots out watery “spores” to the delight of passersby. The impressive “floating” tall mountains are the centerpiece of the park. Tied together with “vines” for support, they give the illusion of floating. There are not a lot of wide open spaces, and very little signage, so you feel more immersed in the world of Pandora. Waterfalls and babbling streams complete the experience. A drum circle built into some rocks is available for anyone to let their inner rhythm out. The rides are amazing. The Na’vi River Journey is a gentle boat ride through Pandora at night, with all it’s glowing splendor. So much is going on all around you, you need a few more rides to take it all in. You see fantastical beasts running through the forest, and little critters scampering in the glowing leaves overhead. All complete with the sounds of the night. Towards the end of the ride we meet an animatronic Na’vi singing a native song. cont’

ove over Soarin’, you have just been beaten as BEST. RIDE. EVER. by “Avatar Flight of Passage” — just WOW! There is a very long walk from the beginning of the queue to get to the ride, but it’s very interesting. You walk through Pandoran caves full of colorful cave drawings, and into a lab where avatars are being made. There is a fully formed avatar floating in a tube which is quite fascinating. The ride itself is like Soarin’ on steroids. Rather than hang-gliding, you are riding the back of a large banshee (a fierce bird-like creature). Instead of a chair, you are straddling a seat (think motorcycle). The imagery in front of you is breathtaking and loaded with detail all around. There are swoops over thundering rhino-type animals, riding under the crest of a huge wave, and many more thrills. As you swoop and turn, your seat mimics the banshee’s movements. When he stops, you can hear his heavy breathing. As you ride, you feel blasts of air and smell a woodsy aroma timed to coordinate with where you are. All this and it’s 3-D too! We rode it 3 times during our stay, and it still was not enough time to take it all in.

here is only one restaurant in the new park, Satu’li Canteen. It’s has a “build your own meal” concept. You choose a protein, vegs or grains, and a sauce. Options include chicken, sliced beef, fish and tofu. There are dumplings filled with cheeseburger or veg curry. Desserts are a choice of blueberry cream cheese mousse or chocolate cake. In keeping with the Pandoran theme, the food is artfully presented and tasty. Satu’li is open from breakfast, lunch and dinner. A beverage stand near the restaurant, Pongu Pongu sells green beer and frozen drinks. The gift shop, Windtraders, is also fun. You can make your own avatar, “adopt” your own banshee that sits on your shoulder while you operate him with a control unit, and find lots of Avatar related souvenirs. A kiosk in the park also does face painting and sells Na’vi ears and tails if you are so inclined. cont’

ur suggestion would be to enjoy the park in the daytime, then tool around in Animal Kingdom, then return to Pandora at night. It’s a whole different looking place. A lot of the Pandoran plants come “alive” with bioluminescense, and the sounds of creatures fill the night. Even the ground is glowing. James Cameron announced four sequels to Avatar are to be filmed at the same time and released at the end of 2020, 2021, 2024 and 2025. The new park should have a good long run way beyond the movies.

Concerning your question about being screwed, I doubt you were unless, of course, your legitimate win of $1250 for hitting five numbers was not honored. When the boxman supervising a crap game invalidates a roll, he or she will call “no roll” or “no dice.” Usually, this happens when one or both of the dice fail to cover much distance, they bounce off the game, a player tries to slide them, or the dice do not land flat. More than likely one of those possibilities happened on that fateful roll. I can tell you first hand, John, that in a fast paced game like craps, a boxman needs to make split-second decisions that won’t always be favorable to you. True, John, I wasn’t there boxing the game. Yard Sale Tips
I
have been advising people about at yard sales for decades. Here are my top tips for those of you who love yard sales, both buyers and sellers. Many of us have spent a weekend driving around your favorite neighborhoods to shop on other people’s lawns. Typically, you end up buying a few things that you really don’t need but you just can’t leave on a neighbor’s lawn like a watering can, vintage poster, and bunch of silk napkins. You spend $12 and call it a day. As an expert appraiser, there are many things that people don’t know about yard sales. The first thing that most people don’t know about yard sales is that it is big business. You think it is just small time stuff with neighbors cleaning out the basement of old junk, but in reality, yard sales are the source of objects that command six figure price tags in other markets far from someone’s freshly mowed front yard. That’s right, the elite auction houses and internet markets for art, antiques, and collectibles use yard sales as a major source for their inventory. And, many of the major auction houses and smaller estate auction houses regularly send people known as pickers or runners out to yard sales to get some of their auction inventory from yard sales. These people are sent to neighborhoods where the homes have reached the 50-year old mark assuming that their original owners are ready to
move on to assisted living facilities, in with family members, or on to smaller, downsized residences. Most unknowing yard sale hosts just think that they are just selling their stuff to naive shoppers. Well, be warned if you are a yard sale seller or shopper. Yard sale buyers and sellers are competing with the pros out there. These big time buyers know what you’ve got, know what it is really worth, know where to sell it for top dollar, and they are not in the game to tell you that you just made a big mistake putting out that Eastlake table or vintage Guerlain perfume bottle on the front lawn for $25 dollars or 50 cents respectively. And your asking price is all wrong too! These guys are going to get you down on the asking price and take away something very valuable that was once in your house as a treasured family heirloom. Know what you’ve got before you schlep it out to the front lawn. Super Bowl winning head coach Jon Gruden will be inducted at half time at the Atlantic Falcons game on December 18. The Buccaneers open their preseason home slate against the Cleveland Browns on Saturday, August 26. Halftime entertainment will be provided by the teams junior cheer leaders program. The Buccaneers are celebrating their 20th season of the Junior cheerleaders, which is a program designed to promote self esteem, commitment and discipline for girls ages 6 to 14 years old. Tampa Bay will conclude it’s preseason schedule by hosting the Washington Redskins on Thursday, August 21. The team will celebrate NFL’s football initiative, which is focused on providing kids safe places to play, as well as programs that address importance of proper coaching, health, safety and wellness, academic and life skills development, and character education programs. On September 17 the Buccaneers play the Chicago Bears in the regular season home opener. The game will mark the regular season debut of a host of new Raymond James Stadium renovations. Two weeks later, on October 1, Tampa Bay play host to the New York Giants at 4:05 PM. The Buccaneers will host the first primetime ring of honor games just four days later, On October 5 when they will face-off against the New England Patriots. Well I hope everyone is as pumped about this season. Will this be our Super Bowl year? Just a little side note. It seems there are players in the NFL that are wining that the aren’t getting as much money as they think they deserve because the players in the NBA make more. Really? They are kidding right? First they play very few games compared to the NBA and their season is much shorter. A kid gets millions to play a game and he might not even be any good but he’s complaining that he’s worth more? He needs to get a life. That‘s my opinion, sorry if you don’t like it. GO BUCS!

Shiprock New Mexico
S
hiprock is a monadnock rising nearly 1,583 feet above the high-desert plain of the Navajo Nation in San Juan County, New Mexico. Its peak elevation is 7,177 feet above sea level. It lies about 10.75 miles southwest of the town of Shiprock, which is named for the peak. Governed by the Navajo Nation, the formation is in the Four Corners region and plays a significant role in Navajo religion, myth, and tradition. It is located in the center of the area occupied by the Ancient Pueblo People, a prehistoric Native American culture of the Southwest United States often referred to as the Anasazi. Shiprock is a point of interest for rock climbers and photographers and has been featured in several film productions and novels. It is the most prominent landmark in northwestern New Mexico.
