Alvarez, Michael Carleton, and James FitzGerald with original music by Will Knapp. Rick Bronson, Jason Freeman, and John Timberlake will barrel through just about every Christmas story, movie, or Bass-Rankin TV special you can think of including such beloved classics as A Christmas Carol, Miracle on 34th Street, How The Grinch Stole Christmas, and It’s A Wonderful Life. This adaptation of Dickens’ immortal A Christmas Carol closely follows the original story but with a lively score written by academy award winner Leslie Bricusse. Songs include the Oscar nominated “Thank You Very Much,” the toe-tapping “December the 25,” and the wistful “Happiness.” The sometimes dark tale of the cantankerous Ebenezer Scrooge and his night of redemption and transformation is a Christmas staple that becomes more light-hearted in the hands of Carrollwood Players director Jeff Lukas. The production features Rob L’Ecuyer as Ebenezer Scrooge, Sam Burke as Bob Cratchit, Faith Clark as The Ghost of Christmas Past, Nicholas Knetxke as The Ghost of Christmas Present, Jeffrey M. Lukas as The Ghost of Jacob Marley, Bradley Clark as Tiny Tim, Adriane Falcon as Mrs. Cratchit, and Philip Houdesheldt as The Ghost of Christmas Future. SHOW REVIEW:

The Sword at The State Theatre By Keri McAlpine Backstage before the show, bands The Sword and their openers Royal Thunder were very different in their preparations to take the stage. Down a narrow corridor covered with graffiti and tags, Royal Thunder could be heard in a room at the end. Shouting to one another in encouragement to pump everyone up as they threw a small medicine ball around in a circle. Meanwhile, in a room at the opposite end of the corridor, The Sword was calm, sitting in chairs and couches chatting about different happenings. Coolers and tables served them blackberries, raspberries, and hummus. Royal Thunder, originally from Atlanta, took the stage. Made up of Milny Parsonz (vocals and bass), Josh Weaver (guitar), Evan Diprima (drums), and Will Fiore (guitar),

crowd, it is clear that The Sword is not some crazy, trouble-making rock band people may imagine. They are truly a group of friends that like to simply hang out and play music together. The Sword, made up of John Cronise on vocals, Kyle Shutt on guitar, Bryan Richie on bass and Santiago Vela III on drums were happy to come back to Saint Petersburg, they said. Shutt said they have been coming to the area for about ten years and always enjoy the people and the beach, if they have time for it. This was the southern-most stop on their east coast tour, and it was one for the books.

A bartender in the venue commented about the lead singer, “How awesome is she? Milny Parsonz energy was definitely undeniable. Her transitions from her hard-rock and rough vocals into sweet long notes resonated through the entire room, with green lights going over the stage. All four members stood in a line on the stage, giving a sense of unity among them. By the time The Sword came on stage, the venue was twice as full. A fog machine filled the stage with ambiance, and the crowd became captivated with the first song. The Dreamthieves, a band favorite, was the fourth song they played, and it was clear it was a crowd favorite as well. FERRYTALE WISHES

Disney’s New Fireworks Dessert Cruise at Magic Kingdom Story and Photos by Melissa Wolcott Martino and Al Martino

J

ust when you thought you could go back to your hotel after a full day at the theme parks, Disney throws a new fun event at you. This is Ferrytale Wishes — a fireworks dessert cruise which leaves from the Ferry Boats dock at the Transportation Center at 8:00 pm, and heads out into the Seven Seas Lagoon for a leisurely cruise past the Magic Kingdom resorts. Before stepping onto the ferry, a Disney castmember hands you a flashing glow glass of apple juice. Onboard while you are enjoying the cruise, you are nibbling on some delectible desserts created by Disney chefs. This is a family friendly event, but there are also alcoholic drinks available for the adults. Some of the dessert selections include a de-constructed Pineapple Upside Down Cake, a mini “Firework” Cupcake with a Pop, ice cream, Key Lime Tart, fruit and cheese tray, and a really cute Cinderella Sugar Skipper with a little orange cake. For those with allegies, there is a no sugar added Florida Mango Panna Cotta (also has no gluten, soy, eggs, peanuts or dairy added.) Beverage choices also include sparkling wine, punch, tea and coffee. A special plate and glow glass are yours to keep. The ferry stops at a strategic spot for viewing the “Wishes” fireworks over Cinderella’s Castle, then continues back to the dock. A lovely way to top off a lovely Disney day. DEAL ME IN with Mark Pilarski www.markpilarski.com/ Dear Mark: Recently, someone who wrote you was frustrated with never winning at slots. Your answer was excellent but you left something out that is probably also adding to his frustration: gamblers, especially slot players in my opinion, are notorious liars about their gambling outcomes. Although the examples of winners he gave sound legit, he doesn’t know how much those people put into those machines to get those jackpots. Many more people that tell you how much they “won” tend to leave out a lot of facts about that win, like how many hundreds they put in that machine to get the $100 jackpot. Or, they just outright lie to save face about blowing all their money, aka “Oh, I broke about even.” This can frustrate a person who hears all these (at best) half-truths about other peoples’ experiences, making a person think there is something wrong with him or her when, in reality, almost everyone else is in the same boat. Tom D. Your e-mail, Tom, is totally on target. Most players are notorious for overestimating their winnings and playing down their loses.

(Whitesnake), Paul Shortino [Lead Vocals] (Quiet Riot), Jay Schellen [Drums] (Badfinger), Andrew Freeman [Lead Vocals and Guitars] (The Offspring), Michael T. Ross [Keyboards] (Lita Ford), Hugh McDonald [Bass] (Bon Jovi), and outstanding female vocalists Carol-Lyn Liddle (Masters of Rock) and Stephanie Calvert (Starship). MONTE CARLO “BOOZE & BITES” DINNER SERIES www.montecarlo.com/boozebites/ Each month a different restaurant at the resort hosts a dinner in which a five-course menu is prepared and presented by the restaurant’s executive chef and paired with a sought-after spirit, wine or brew. During the dinner, a representative for the featured spirit provides insight to each pairing. The Booze & Bites series takes place the last Wednesday of every month. Tickets can be purchased on the Monte Carlo website. Guests must be 21 years or older to attend.

It’s uncountable how many times a player will enthusiastically tell me, “Look, Mark, I’m winning,” as they point to their credit meter. OK, but showing me 250 credits on a quarter machine is nothing more than $62.50 worth of credits that they will probably end up burning through. What always slips their mind is disclosing that they are into said machine a few Benjamins. That, Tom, is not to say that there are not a handful of winners. A winning customer is the most important asset to any casino. Casinos cannot afford to have all of their clientele leave in a huff. That small percentage that does walk out winners tells friends and family, and then those future players are caught in a trap by the idea that a jackpot for them just might be one pull away. Accept as true, Tom, the mathematics of the gambling business. The house is going to hold a certain percentage of every dollar wagered on a slot machine, and then grind additional monies out of either Joe or Josephine as those players cycle through their remaining bankroll. What I believe is happening is that most players confuse winning with what they are experiencing, the “possibility” of winning. What keeps the slot player tied to a machine is the prospect, no matter how remote, of that pot of gold at the end of the rainbow jackpot. Reality only sets in when they finally total out and find themselves lighter in the wallet than when they started. Then, of course, out comes the proverbial, “Oh, I broke about even.” Likewise, the most favored words the casino loves to hear from that same losing player is, “I’ll be back!”

Exemplify cool simplicity with over six washes, styles and fits. At Mott & Bow, they handcraft every finishing process of their jeans and make it look effortless. A lot of the cost of a premium jean is attributed to the amount of labor intensity in the finishing process. If the wash formula consists of resin application, each jean is either sprayed or immersed into a resin mix (the two processes create different looks and feels). And everything that goes through the resin process must be pre-cured and then cured afterwards in an oven. Jeans are scraped in different areas to replicate the distress of normal use. Christo is best known for the monumental projects he and his late wife and collaborator JeanneClaude accomplished over nearly four decades. These include the 24 1/2 mile-long Running Fence in California’s Sonoma and Marin Counties (1976), the Wrapped Reichstag in Berlin (1995), and the epic-scale crowd pleaser The Gates (2005), which comprised 7,053 fabric banners that spanned the walkways of New York’s Central Park. XTO+J-C will present the artist’s important Wrapped Package (1960) alongside many drawings and collages related to his early wrapped objects—chairs, road signs, motorcycles, and other commonplace items that disrupt our relationship to the everyday through their concealment. The exhibition also includes Christo’s large-scale Store Front (1965–66) and a related series of Show Windows from the early ‘70s, which signal an expansion of the artist’s sculptural practice to a new environmental realm.

From the rediscovery of ancient sites and artworks in the Renaissance until the present day, the world of classical antiquity lives on, continually fascinating and inspiring artists. TMA - 120 Gasparilla Plaza (Polk Street) Tampa, FL 33602.

This special exhibition highlights M.C. Escher, a renowned artist, whose visual illusions puzzle and delight audiences worldwide, and is best known for his “impossible constructions” and use of tessellation. The robust exhibit features 135 works covering Escher’s entire artistic career, including an array of his most recognizable works such as “Drawing Hands,” “Reptiles” and “Waterfall” alongside rarely exhibited early drawings of family members, panoramas of exotic landscapes and historic architecture of Italy and Spain, original preparatory sketches, mezzotints and more. “Escher at the Dali” features prints, drawings, a sculpture, wood blocks, a lithograph stone and posters drawn by the artist to explain his printing techniques. The exhibit delves into his exploration of infinity through tessellation, in which shapes fit together perfectly without overlapping, including an enormous woodcut “Metamorphosis” (193940) which spans 13-1/2 feet. 1 Dali Blvd, St Petersburg, FL 33701. Collecting Advent Calendars

rom the Latin term adventus, Advent means “the arrival.” For centuries, Advent has been a time of spiritual reflection for Christians in anticipation of the birth of Jesus Christ. It is believed that the period of Advent has been observed since about the 4th Century AD. In the early days of observing Advent, the time frame lasted from the feast day of Saint Martin held on November 11 until Christmas Day which takes place on December 25. Similar to the springtime season of Lent, Advent once included a six-week long fast for believers, however, that has since been discontinued. By the 6th Century, Advent no longer had a fasting ritual like Lent and the Advent season was reduced from six weeks to only four weeks in length. Today, the season of Advent remains a time of devotional prayer and anticipation of the Christmas holiday. Like many holiday collectibles, objects relating to Advent such as Advent wreaths and Advent candles mark the days leading up to Christmas. Advent wreaths, a circle of evergreens symbolizing eternal life, are widely used. The four red candles represent the four Sundays of the Advent period and a fifth white candle in the wreath’s center is called the Christ candle. The Christ candle is the last one to be lit and it is lit only on Christmas Day. Quite possibly the most recognized of the season’s traditions is the use of the popular Advent calendar. For many collectors, the chronological countdown to Christmas Day comes in the form of an antique or vintage paper, lithographed, felt, painting on canvas, or mixed media Advent calendar. The Advent calendar is particularly popular with children, many of whom spend the greater part of the month of December patiently awaiting the arrival of Santa Claus and counting down the days by opening doors of an Advent calendar in order. According to legend, the first known Advent Calendar

64

was handmade in 1851. By the 1880s, the Germanic tradition of the Advent calendar began to spread across Europe to North America. Typically made of printed images on paper or cardboard, Advent calendars boast 24 small numbered doors to be opened daily in anticipation of Christmas. Snow covered houses, holiday scenes, and winter wonderlands were common imagery used as the backdrop for the 24 miniature doors on Advent calendars. Each Advent calendar door is opened to reveal a holiday image, a Bible passage, a piece of candy, or a small gift starting on December 1 and continuing until Christmas Eve, that is December 24. The “father” of the modern Advent calendar was a German printer named Gerhard Lang. While working from his Munich, Germany printing office, Lang produced small colorful, religious images on paper and cardboard. Each image corresponded to one day in the month of December up to December 24. Circa 1908, Lang produced the first Advent calendar that had cardboard doors that opened to reveal the image inside. Throughout much of the early 20th Century, Advent calendars were exchanged as gifts around the Thanksgiving holiday in anticipation of Christmas. When it comes to value of Advent calendars, the characteristics you should look for are good condition (no rips, tears, or stains), intricate patterns or images of a winter scene or holiday events in bright colors, and famous printmakers like Lang, Sankt Johannis, etc. Today, Advent calendars have evolved from lithograph printed images on cardboard to free-standing dollhousestyle collectible calendars with hinged doors to hide small gifts, money, or candy. Some of these contemporary holiday collectibles are made of pressed board, masonite, and even wood. For collectors, expect to pay $50 to $500 for some of the traditional paper Advent calendars and several thousands of dollars for hand made or hand crafted Advent calendars. Happy holidays! Kentucky’s Garrard County Nature Preserves

E

xercising and enjoying the outdoors often takes a back seat during the cold, winter months. Yet, during this time of the year nature reveals that it is alive and well, and awaiting your arrival. The Nature Conservancy of Kentucky’s Garrard County nature preserves are open for hiking from dawn until dusk – even during these winter days. The nature preserves — Dupree and Sally Brown/ Crutcher/Wallace — each offer a number of well-marked hiking trails. Dupree even includes a trail designed to be easy to hike – especially well-suited to young kids and families. Snow and Ice – While these weather conditions often make the trails more slippery and require caution, they also create spectacular scenery. The ice formations along the creeks at the Sally Brown/ Crutcher/Wallace Preserve are especially noteworthy. Additionally, the animal prints in the snow at both sites will surprise you. Clearly there are lots of permanent residents that stay out of sight when you visit – deer, raccoon, coyote, fox, rabbit and turkey prints are usually visible along the hiking trails after a fresh snow fall.
