Wizards Of Winter yuletide ensemble was formed by multi-faceted keyboardist Scott Kelly back in 2009 as a way to give back to their home town community. The local town’s food pantry was in severe dire straits and in response, band leader Kelly was looking to hold a holiday concert event to support the cause. Unlike TSO, The Wizards Of Winter play original music. Their full length album “The Magic of Winter” has just been released, and the new single is called “The Spirit of Christmas.”

Doom-Rock Band THE SWORD Coming To St. Petersburg By Keri McAlpine

A

Austin, Texas native rock band, The Sword, is heading to St. Petersburg to play the State Theatre on November 20th. This will be their first time headlining in the Tampa/St. Pete area. The group is made up of John Cronise on vocals, Kyle Shutt on guitar, Bryan Richie on bass and Santiago Vela III on drums. From record label Razor & Tie, their new album, High Country, was produced by Adrian Quesada and Grupo Fantasma, and was engineered by Stuart Stykes of The White Stripes. (Razor & Tie also manage Yellowcard, The Pretty Reckless, and Hatebreed.) I spoke with guitar player Kyle Shutt (far left in photo) about their tour and the new album. This is The Sword’s fifth full-length album and, according to Shutt, has been getting rave reviews from fans and is possibly their best yet.

www.AccentOnTampaBay.com

Q: So, how’s your tour going? A: We went to Europe first right after the album came out, and after that, we just got back from the west coast. We were just kind of in the western U.S.… from San Diego all the way up to Vancouver. It was really great, man. It’s been really cool to see people’s reactions to the new record. Going to Europe first was a little weird because people over there kind of have a different attitude towards the record we released. It’s been cool over here just to see people’s faces already knowing all the words to all the new songs and everything. Just kind of seeing the reception we’ve gotten has been pretty great. Q: What is something you personally like about this album that you hope translates to listeners? A: This record especially, I feel like it was much more of a reflection of who we are personally instead of us just trying to create some albums that were going for a particular sound or something. I feel like we finally sound like ourselves now. Everyone wants to categorize music when they hear it, like ‘Oh, who do they sound like?’ or ‘What kind of music is it?’ I think we have reached a point in our careers where we just sound like The Sword, and that’s what I’m most proud of. Q: Have you noticed a difference in your audience with the new album out compared to previous tours? A: Well I wouldn’t say a new audience, per say. It’s just the shows have definitely been bigger—there’s just more people. Our story’s always kind of been this little snowball that just keeps getting bigger and bigger the longer we keep rolling it along, you know? Everybody’s career has ups and downs. Ours has just been a slow and steady increase every time we go out so it’s been really cool to see that continue to grow. It feels great too, because we actually feel like we are doing something with our lives, instead of just killing ourselves on the road. Q: Do you have any favorite songs to play live, old or new? A: It’s been a lot of fun doing the new ones because we sort of made them up in the studio. I mean, not entirely, but we definitely embellished a lot more in the studio than we had in the past and it was kind of like we made this record that we didn’t know how to play live. Having figuring out how to play those songs live was a lot of fun. “The Dreamthieves” has been really fun to play live. Also the instrumental one right in the middle, “Suffer No Fools,” is one we have been playing some nights… and it’s, I mean, it’s just riff city. You just solo for days and it’s a lot of fun. I like the higher energy numbers. Q: Have you been to the Tampa/St. Pete before to play? A: We have been to Tampa actually. We played the skate park in Tampa back in, I think 2006. That was a really

good time back then. We have played the State Theater before, too. But yeah, we love St. Pete and we always, you know, find a chance to go down to the beach or just have a crab cake somewhere or something. Q: Who have you been touring with? A: “We just finished touring the western U.S. with Kadavar and All Them Witches, which was a great line up. But the whole eastern tour is going to be with Royal Thunder. Q: So have you played with Royal Thunder before? A: No we haven’t, but I’ve seen them before…. maybe a year ago. I was really impressed though, I had never seen them before that. We have a lot of mutual friends actually because they are from Atlanta and we have a lot of friends from there. I’m excited to hit the road with them. We’re a fun-loving bunch. We just like to go out and have a good time and play music. So, as long as that’s their m.o. I think we are all gonna get along just fine. Q: Will there be anything unexpected or any surprises we should look forward to at your show? A: We are playing a lot of our new songs. Not all of them, but a lot of our old songs we are kind of playing in new tuning that we started playing with. So some of the songs really do feel a little brighter and more energetic, and it’s made it a lot more fun for us playing. I think you can even see it in our faces probably that we are actually having a lot more fun than we have been having in the past couple years. We took about a year and a half off and then we kind of just wrote this new record that we’re really proud of and we started playing some old songs in a different way. Q: Growing up, was there a rock concert or other show you went to that really blew your mind and made you want to pursue music? A: There were a few different things, honestly. I grew up in a really tiny town in West Texas. MTV really was my saving grace… Once I saw Nirvana videos, alongside Snoop Dogg videos and stuff like that, it really blew my mind. I was into all kinds of music. Anything I could get my hands on I would listen to. When I saw the Green Day video for “Basket case,” that was the first time I remember being like ‘I can do that! I could totally do that.’ Then I started playing guitar when I was 10 or 11. And we didn’t really get a whole lot of concerts out in West Texas. But the two bands that did come through a lot were Pantera and ZZ Top. So going to see those guys, yeah it really was mind blowing. The first time I thought I was going to die was at a Pantera concert. They started playing “Walk.” I was 14 years old and I was in the middle kind of where this giant pit broke out. I literally thought I was going to die. I just turned around and ran out, I think I lost one of my shoes. I wish I could go back and see that show again.

DEAL ME IN with Mark Pilarski www.markpilarski.com/ Dear Mark: I am a freak of nature. Of the 50 times that I have played slots, maybe twice I left with $20 to $40. All the other times I have lost big. One time, I went with a lucky elderly teacher friend of mine and she won $300. I lost $50. So, she gave me another 20, and again I lost. She then gave me yet another 20, and again I lost. She got tired of giving me 20s And who can blame her. Another time, I had spent an hour on a machine with no luck at all so I moved over to the next machine. Along came an elderly woman who sat down at the machine I had previously been playing on and within 20 minutes she won a $400 jackpot. The casino Gods just refuse to let me win! Mark G. I begin with casino secret #1: Slot machines can have such a bloodthirsty appetite that they can attack your bankroll with ferocity akin to a school of piranha consuming a cow. Now let’s move to your playing timeline, the “50 times that I’ve played slots.” Well, Mark, that is relatively short, especially against slot machines, which are notorious for being the toughest game to beat in the house. Which leads me to what I believe your problem is. It is called, The Grind. For example, suppose you are playing on a slot machine that is pre-programmed to return 88% of wagered money back in wins. If you were to cycle through a $200 bankroll, which you can easily do in mere minutes, you

Now here’s dirty little casino secret #2. The casino knows full well that “you ain’t goin’ nowhere.” The casino anticipates with almost 100% certainty that you will be re-playing that $176 and they will happily give you, in return, $155 for doing so. Play the $155, and your return will be $136. Playing through the $136, will get you back $120. Against that kind of math, Mark, you’ve got some nerve trying to be a winner. It’s understood/assumed, this is based on a pre-programmed computer chip in the machine tuned to return a certain percentage back as wins. But, Mark, can you see how the casino is grinding away at your capital? Now here’s casino secret #3. The casino is NOT in the gambling business. It is in the math business. On preprogrammed slot machines that give the house a certain percentage return, you are the only one doing the gambling here. Granted, you may happen occasionally to be the one who gets well over an 88% return, but in all probability you will be among the countless who are contributing the 12% to the casino. Casino secret #4: Casinos LOVE winners. Winning customers are the most important asset in the world to someone involved in selling chance. Winning players tell future losers of their good fortune. Hope, Mark, springs eternal. Alexander Pope (An Essay on Man, 1732) The huge house advantage on slot machines will always grind away your bankroll at a lickety-split pace. The more time you spend front and center in front of a slot machine, the better the casino’s chances of liquidating your bankroll. Consider your play normal, Mark, and not some unusual, unexpected natural phenomenon.

Christo is best known for the monumental projects he and his late wife and collaborator JeanneClaude accomplished over nearly four decades. These include the 24 1/2 mile-long Running Fence in California’s Sonoma and Marin Counties (1976), the Wrapped Reichstag in Berlin (1995), and the epic-scale crowd pleaser The Gates (2005), which comprised 7,053 fabric banners that spanned the walkways of New York’s Central Park. XTO+J-C will present the artist’s important Wrapped Package (1960) alongside many drawings and collages related to his early wrapped objects—chairs, road signs, motorcycles, and other commonplace items that disrupt our relationship to the everyday through their concealment. The exhibition also includes Christo’s large-scale Store Front (1965–66) and a related series of Show Windows from the early ‘70s, which signal an expansion of the artist’s sculptural practice to a new environmental realm.

This special exhibition highlights M.C. The robust exhibit features 135 works covering Escher’s entire artistic career, including an array of his most recognizable works such as “Drawing Hands,” “Reptiles” and “Waterfall” alongside rarely exhibited early drawings of family members, panoramas of exotic landscapes and historic architecture of Italy and Spain, original preparatory sketches, mezzotints and more. “Escher at the Dali” features prints, drawings, a sculpture, wood blocks, a lithograph stone and posters drawn by the artist to explain his printing techniques. Collecting Advent Calendars

rom the Latin term adventus, Advent means “the arrival.” For centuries, Advent has been a time of spiritual reflection for Christians in anticipation of the birth of Jesus Christ. It is believed that the period of Advent has been observed since about the 4th Century AD. In the early days of observing Advent, the time frame lasted from the feast day of Saint Martin held on November 11 until Christmas Day which takes place on December 25. Similar to the springtime season of Lent, Advent once included a six-week long fast for believers, however, that has since been discontinued. By the 6th Century, Advent no longer had a fasting ritual like Lent and the Advent season was reduced from six weeks to only four weeks in length. Today, the season of Advent remains a time of devotional prayer and anticipation of the Christmas holiday. Like many holiday collectibles, objects relating to Advent such as Advent wreaths and Advent candles mark the days leading up to Christmas. Advent wreaths, a circle of evergreens symbolizing eternal life, are widely used. The four red candles represent the four Sundays of the Advent period and a fifth white candle in the wreath’s center is called the Christ candle. The Christ candle is the last one to be lit and it is lit only on Christmas Day. Quite possibly the most recognized of the season’s traditions is the use of the popular Advent calendar. For many collectors, the chronological countdown to Christmas Day comes in the form of an antique or vintage paper, lithographed, felt, painting on canvas, or mixed media Advent calendar. The Advent calendar is particularly popular with children, many of whom spend the greater part of the month of December patiently awaiting the arrival of Santa Claus and counting down the days by opening doors of an Advent calendar in order. According to legend, the first known Advent Calendar

76

was handmade in 1851. By the 1880s, the Germanic tradition of the Advent calendar began to spread across Europe to North America. Typically made of printed images on paper or cardboard, Advent calendars boast 24 small numbered doors to be opened daily in anticipation of Christmas. Snow covered houses, holiday scenes, and winter wonderlands were common imagery used as the backdrop for the 24 miniature doors on Advent calendars. Each Advent calendar door is opened to reveal a holiday image, a Bible passage, a piece of candy, or a small gift starting on December 1 and continuing until Christmas Eve, that is December 24. The “father” of the modern Advent calendar was a German printer named Gerhard Lang. While working from his Munich, Germany printing office, Lang produced small colorful, religious images on paper and cardboard. Each image corresponded to one day in the month of December up to December 24. Circa 1908, Lang produced the first Advent calendar that had cardboard doors that opened to reveal the image inside. Throughout much of the early 20th Century, Advent calendars were exchanged as gifts around the Thanksgiving holiday in anticipation of Christmas. When it comes to value of Advent calendars, the characteristics you should look for are good condition (no rips, tears, or stains), intricate patterns or images of a winter scene or holiday events in bright colors, and famous printmakers like Lang, Sankt Johannis, etc. Today, Advent calendars have evolved from lithograph printed images on cardboard to free-standing dollhousestyle collectible calendars with hinged doors to hide small gifts, money, or candy. Some of these contemporary holiday collectibles are made of pressed board, masonite, and even wood. For collectors, expect to pay $50 to $500 for some of the traditional paper Advent calendars and several thousands of dollars for hand made or hand crafted Advent calendars. Happy holidays! K

ansas recognized the sunflower as official state flower and floral emblem in 1903. Excerpt from Kansas legislation: Whereas, Kansas has a native wild flower common throughout her borders, hardy and conspicuous, of definite, unvarying and striking shape, easily sketched, moulded, and carved, having armorial capacities, ideally adapted for artistic reproduction, with its strong, distinct disk and its golden circle of clear glowing rays -- a flower that a child can draw on a slate, a woman can work in silk, or a man can carve on stone or fashion in clay; and Whereas, This flower has to all Kansans a historic symbolism which speaks of frontier days, winding trails, pathless prairies, and is full of the life and glory of the past, the pride of the present, and richly emblematic of the majesty of a golden future, and is a flower which has given Kansas the world-wide name, “the sunflower state”... Be it enacted ... that the helianthus or wild native sunflower is ... designated ... the state flower and floral emblem of the state of Kansas.
