The members of the Asian-American Cultural Circle of Unity have earned the admiration and respect of those in their community, working diligently to provide vital programs and services that contribute to the quality of life on Long Island. This wonderful organization is to be commended for providing the means through which generous acts of public service and hours of dedication can be demonstrated. Key Artists & Performers Chi Wang: Born and raised in Taiwan, Indigenous Taiwanese pianist Joy Chi Wang has presented abundant musical performances as a piano soloist, chamber musician and singer at the National Taiwan Concert Hall, Carnegie Hall and other prestigious venues. In 2009 and 2010 she won first prize with exceptional scores in two competitions and also won second prize in the Taiwan division of the Japan Classical Music International Competition. In 2014, she received a piano performance Master's degree from the Manhattan School of Music. Ms. Wang is now actively working in piano pedagogy, multi-art collaboration, chamber music and promotion of indigenous Taiwanese music. Chia Yi was born and raised in Taiwan where she studied to become an artist/actress/musician. Her dream was to share everything beautiful with the world. She began piano lessons at age 7 and received classical vocal training when she was 12. At the age of 21, she began to think about how to combine different kinds of art to become a better artist. After graduating from the National Taiwan Normal University with a Bachelor of Fine Arts (majoring in Voice with a Minor in piano) she went to New York City to study at the American Musical and Dramatic Academy. There the theater world totally expanded her mind. The radically different styles of art combined together had a huge influence on her. It brought her to where she is today – a performing artist who joyfully shares all kinds of beautiful stories with the world. Chia Ying Kao: A native of Taiwan, Chia is a 2012 graduate of Sarah Lawrence College. She is recognized as an emerging choreographer who fuses her Chinese/Taiwanese dance roots with the cutting edge styles of the West. Her work has been presented at the Tribeca Film Festival, New York Union Square (dance and installation art), and the New York Chinese Consolidated Benevolent Association. As a dancer, she has performed with the Bill T. Jones/Arnie Zane Dance Company, Topaz Arts, Dance China New York, Chinese-American Arts & Culture Association, Hou Ying Dance Group and at major events such as the Lincoln Center 2006 Out of Doors Dance festival, American Dance Festival and National American College Dance Festival. She has also toured internationally with Taipei Li-Yuan Chinese Opera. Chia Ying was awarded the “Most Outstanding Asian Artist” Award in recognition for Excellence in Dance” from the Chinese- American Arts Council in 2006. She is the recipient of the 2012 Topaz Arts’ Space Exploration Dance Residency, and was invited to take part in the 2012 International Choreographers Program at the American Dance FestivalHenan. Chien-Lun Clare Lee: Originally from Taiwan, Chien-Lun Clare Lee is a versatile artist in New York City. She has university training in Musicology, Pedagogy, and Theatre, all of which provided the foundation for her professional career as a musician, vocalist, and actor. She is an avid performer who sang the vocals for the Chinese movie Tiny Times I (小時代) soundtrack, the World Games in 2009, the Night of the Arts and Malan Breton's 2015 NY fashion show as a soprano

soloist. Recently she was in the off-off Broadway show Midnight Kill as Zhao (Lead, World premiere). She has opera credits in the National Theatre in Taiwan: Sapho (Andalouse Taiwan premiere) and Lucia di Lammermoor. NYC Theatre credits include Exile 5.42 (Lead), Comfort Women - A New Musical (OffBroadway), Behind the Mask (Lead, US premiere), 4@15 - Octopus Heart (Sea Siren/Lead). Short film credits are: Forever Shakespeare (Lead), Ecstasy Boulevard (Lead). MM: Vocal Performance – Music Theatre, New York University. Her website is www.chienlunlee.com. Fujima Nishiki-mie was introduced to the art and practice of Japanese Classical Dance in Japan when she was 8 years old. She began to study it in earnest in New York, and has practiced it here for over 12 years. Fujima Nishiki-mie received both Natori and Shihan licenses in the Soke Fujima style of Japanese Classical Dance, as well as her professional name from Grand Master Fujima Kanjuro VIII. Fujima Nishiki-mie has been teaching on Long Island since 2006, and now has 3 classes in Greenvale, Glen Head and Huntington. Joanna Del Giudice lives and works on Long Island. She is a Mixed Media EcoArtist who crochets plastic bags and other recycled materials. Using the natural hue of the materials, she transforms them into wearable art - clothing and accessories. Joanna completed her Master of Arts degree in Art/Mixed Media at LIU Post as well as her Bachelor of Fine Arts in Art Education. She incorporates recycled arts in her teaching throughout Long Island and New York City. Her artwork is known as “Uniquely Dipherent by Joanna Stella.” For more information, contact the artist at uniquelydipherent@gmail.com. Ling Yan Zhou: A native of Shanghai, she graduated with honors from the People's Liberation Army of Arts University. She was a leading soprano at the League of China Air Force. Ms. Zhou appeared in China's most prestigious musical program, The CCTV's New Year Celebration many times and won numerous vocal awards throughout her singing career. Ms. Zhou possesses a pure and sweet voice which won her the nickname The Songbird. Nancy Wong is a mixed media artist who was born and raised on Long Island. She completed her Bachelor of Fine Arts in Art Education in 2010 and Masters in Art in Studio Art in 2013 from Long Island University, C.W. Post Campus. Her most recognized pieces involve a theme of “swirls” on discarded cardboard, which have been known to be as long as six feet. Since her Master’s Thesis exhibition in May 2013, Nancy has shared her perpetual movement of emotions, symbolism, and culture in a range of mixed media - explored in oil paintings, printmaking, sculpture, and ceramics. For more information, contact the artist: NancyWong45@gmail.com. Long Island Chinese Dance Group (LICDG) was founded in February 2011. Since then, they have performed a variety of Chinese folk, traditional, and modern dances and have taken every opportunity to promote Chinese culture through their hard work. Currently the group consists of fourteen members who come from many different backgrounds, but the one thing they all have in common is

their love of dance. In the past five years, they have been invited to perform at a variety of events including the Journal of Love at the New Jersey State Theater; the Annual Asian Pacific American Heritage Month Celebration organized by the Suffolk County Asian-American Advisory Board (SCAAAB); the Chinese New Year Celebration at the Charles Wang Center organized by the Stony Brook University Confucius Institute; the Chinese New Year Celebration at the Student Activity Center organized by the Stony Brook University Chinese Students and Scholars Association; the Asian Pacific Celebration Month at Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL); the International Conference and Expo on Emerging Technologies for a Smarter World organized by the Center of Excellence in Wireless and Information Technology (CEWIT); the Dragon Boat Race Festival at Port Jefferson; and the Chinese New Year Celebration at Coe Hall in Planting Fields organized by the Long Island Chinese American Association (LICAA). Every year the LICDG also participates in many cultural events organized by local community organizations, universities/schools and libraries. Sandip Bhattacharjee was born into a family with a deep rooted love for music. He was initiated into music by his mother Smt. Krishna Bhattacharjee at the age of four and he continued his talim under Smt. Amita Dasgupta later on. At sixteen, Sandip began his talim at the ITC Sangeet Research Academy under tustad Mashkoor Ali Khan and Ustad Mubarak Ali Khan, sons and disciples of the late legendary Sarangi Maestro Padmashree Ustad Shakoor Khan. In 2003 he joined ITC-SRA as a residential scholar and in 2012 he became an acknowledged musician at the academy. Under both his gurus, Sandip was nurtured in the true guru shishya parampara system of training in the Kirana Gharana. Sandip has accomplished a rare feat: he has lived up to the promise and talent he showed as a child prodigy. He holds a Bachelor’s degree from Rabindra Bharati University (Kolkata) in classical music, where he ranked First Class First. Aside from pure classical music he is highly skilled in singing numerous semi-classical forms like Bhajans, Ghazals, Nazrulgeeti and other regional songs as well. He has performed on stage with many renowned musicians and has been honored to share the stage with the Kathak Legend Pt Birju Maharaj at the John F. Kennedy Centre in Washington DC. Sandip has 3 commercial releases: a CD on Khayal by Sonic Octaves, Mumbai, a CD of Bengali songs by R.P. Techvision, Kolkata and a CD on Bhajan by Sonic Octaves, Mumbai. He has just released a fourth album of Khayal by Bihan Music. He has performed across India and abroad (United States, Europe and Bangladesh). A recipient of the Title Surmani from Sur Singar Sansad Mumbai, Sandip also broadcasts regularly over the All India Radio as an “ A “ Grade artist. He is also a music teacher and travels regularly to Guwahati, Tinsukia and Digboi where he has a substantial following of students in Indian classical music. He has been a faculty member at AAICM in New York since 2013. SOL Y SOMBRA SPANISH DANCE CO. & Artists Sol y Sombra Spanish Dance Co, was established over twenty-five years ago to promote the exciting art of Hispanic music & dance. Under the artistic direction of Maria Loreta, the

company presents programs of Flamenco, Spanish Classical & Folk, Mexican, Argentine Tango and Latin Dance as well as traditional dances performed throughout the Hispanic world for concert series, arts-in-education programs, colleges, cultural and entertainment centers. Sol y Sombra's members are recognized as outstanding professionals in the field of Hispanic music & dance, and have performed extensively both nationally and internationally. In recognition of its quality, value, and achievements, Sol y Sombra has been a recipient of numerous grants from the New York State Legislature., NYSCA, the Nassau County Office of Cultural Development, the Suffolk County Office of Cultural Affairs and JP Morgan Chase Bank. Maria Loreta, founder & Artistic Director of Sol y Sombra, has studied Spanish dance both here and in Spain with some of its foremost artists including La Tati, Paco Fernandez, Ciro, Azorin, Paco Romero, Carmen Cortes, Guito & Tomas de Madrid. Besides her work as principal artist with Sol y Sombra, Maria Loreta has performed with numerous other Spanish dance companies including Estrella Morena's Ballet de Madrid, the American Spanish Dance Theatre and Jose Molina's Bailes Espanoles with which she toured for many years throughout the U.S. and abroad. Her credits include appearances at the U.N., Lincoln Center Out-of-Doors, Town Hall, the Chateaux Madrid, Constitution Hall and the Kravis Center, Jacob’s Pillow and innumerable colleges and cultural centers throughout the U.S. Maria currently teaches Spanish, Latin and Flamenco Dance at SUNY Stony Brook’s Center for Dance, Movement & Somatic Learning and is a teaching artist for the Tilles Center of the Performing Arts. Arturo Martinez - playing the blues and electric and jazz guitar at an early age, the young Mr. Martinez was soon attracted to the Flamenco guitar. He is now an acknowledged, accomplished professional in this art form and has accompanied such well known Flamenco artists as Jose Greco, Jose Molina, Maria Alba, Joaquin Fahardo, Chuni Amaya, Concha Vargas and Pilar Rioja. Recently, Mr. Martinez has received the American Music Center’s award for his original compositions. Mr. Martinez is also a consultant for the World Institute of Music’s annual Flamenco Festival at City Center in NYC. His group, El Spiritu Gitana, recently performed as part of Lincoln Center's Summer Arts Festival. Dominico Caro studied the art of Flamenco singing in Sevilla, Madrid and while living among the gypsies in Maron and Jerez de la Frontera. He studied with such renowned masters as Antonio Mairena, Fosforito, Fernanda de Utrera and Diego del Gastor and has sung for the legendary Jose Greco as well as Maria Benitez’s Estampa Flamenca, Teo Morca and Jose Molina’s Bailes Espanoles. He has appeared in Columbia Artist’s Concert Tours, Julliard’s production of “La Vida Breve” and Cable Television’s “Live from Atlantic City.” Ricardo Santiago: Ricardo began his training at an early age with the Ballet Hispanico of N.Y. He soon received scholarships to attend SUNY Purchase, Alvin Ailey’ American Dance Center and the Dance Theater of Harlem. Besides Flamenco, he has also studied Ballet, Modern, Afro-Caribbean and Argentine

Tangos. Recently he has performed with Carlotta Santana, Flamenco, Ole, and Andrea del Conte’s American Spanish Dance Theater. He frequently works with the Washington Opera and is performing this season in Zefferelli’s production of Carmen & La Traviata at the Metropolitan Opera. Sofia Islam: A native of Pakistan Ms. Islam received her initial dance training in her native country studying classical Western dance forms as well as Indian Kathak & Bharata Natyam. Upon her arrival in the U.S. she worked for many years in the medium of Argentine Tangos and other Latin dance forms as a member of Ballet Argentino de Raices. Subsequently, she toured both nationally and internationally as a member of Jose Molina's Bailes Espanoles. She has also danced as soloist with Andrea del Conte's Danza Espana and Charlota Santana’s Flamenco Vivo. Currently she is dancing in the Metropolitan Opera's production of La Traviata. Alfonso Cid: Born & raised in Sevilla, the heartland of Flamenco, Alfonso became a member of one of its most significant Flamenco clubs - the Pena Flamenca Torres-Marcarena in 1987. As founder/member of Al Bano Maria, the resident group of this Pena, he toured Andalucia in connection with the Universities of Sevilla & Edinburgh in an effort to introduce Flamenco to high school and college students. After training as a classical flautist at the Sevilla Conservatory, he joined the world renowned Flamenco show, FLAMENCO PURO touring with them as singer & flautist throughout 1997. Alfonso is the featured vocalist on Miguel de la Bastide’s CD “El Cambio” for LB Records and worked on Jesse Cook’s CD “Vertigo” for Narada Records. Mr. Cid is currently the lead singer & director of Gazpacho Andalu, a popular Flamenco/fusion quintet that is active in the NYC musical scene. Peter Suarez: An accomplished dancer in many styles, Mr. Suarez has danced or choreographed for the Cincinnati Ballet, the Louisville Ballet, the Connecticut Opera, the Miami Ballet and Ballet Arkansas. Last year he had the distinction of being the only dancer ever hired to perform a live solo with the Gipsy Kings at Radio City Music Hall. Residing now in New York, Peter has studied and worked with such well known Spanish dancers as Jose Molina, Manolo Rivera & Victorio. He has recently appeared in the Metropolitan Opera’s production of War & Peace. Gisele Assi: Born in Sao Paulo Brazil but living in New York since 1999, Gisele traveled to Madrid and Seville to study Flamenco dance and sung with the most reputable maestros throughout 1991, 1995/6, 2005 and 2009. Gisele taught Flamenco dance to children and adults at Ballet Hispanico, Third Street Music Settlement and Fazil’s Studio in NY between 1999 and 2007. Since 2008 she taught at Piel Canela School in NY, Every Little Movement Academy of Art in Hoboken and Yolanda’s Studio in NJ. She is a member of Alborada Spanish Theatre Company where she has been an Assistant Director/Choreographer, first dancer and singer since her arrival in New York. She has also appeared in TV shows and Flamenco Tablaos within the Tristate area as a featured Dancer and

Singer for Alborada and various other companies in NYC, Long Island and New Jersey since her arrival in the USA. She was given a scholarship to study Flamenco singing at the prestigious FUNDACION CRISTINA HEREEN in Sevilla in the summer of 2009. Barbara Martinez began her voice training in the classical tradition at a young age, singing in the children’s chorus of the Metropolitan Opera. Since coming to Flamenco, she has worked in the companies of Charlotta Santana, La Conja, Andrea del Conte & Pilar Rioja. She has appeared in Lincoln Center Out of Doors and Carnegie Hall’s Weil Auditorium. The Ryu Shu Kan was founded in 1989 by Gerard & Hiroko Uraga-Senese and offers an extensive schedule of Japanese cultural and martial arts. Hiroko Uraga is from Japan and met Gerard in NYC while attending Baruch College. Hiroko plays the “Koto” (Japanese Harp) with world renowned Masayo Ishigure and her Sawai Koto Ensemble of NYC. Hiroko was awarded a “Shihan” Master-Teachers License in the Art of Ikebana from the Misho-Ryu Ikebana Kai of Japan and also holds an Instructor’s license in Sho-Do. Kyoshi Senese holds an 8th degree Black Belt in the art of ‘Shin Shu Ho’ “Original Okinawan Karate Life Protection”. He has travelled with the founder of the art, Taika Oyata, to NYPD’s Defense Instructor Academy and Washington DC’s FBI seminars to teach Self-defense. He has been the Director of the Town of Brookhaven Sachem Youth “Children’s Self-Protection” program since 1990, which honored him with Volunteer awards for his 20+ years of service to the youth of the Sachem community. Together, they formed the Ryu Shu Taiko Drum group in 1999 which consists of Karate students, their parents and other enthusiastic members of the Long Island community. Ryu Shu Taiko presents Karate and traditional Taiko drumming and Folk dance throughout the Long Island and NY metro area to corporations, local schools, libraries, Festivals and Multi-Cultural events. In 2007 Dr. Ojima, President of the Japan Center at Stony Brook, invited Hiroko and Gerard to become the Directors of Community Outreach programs for the Japan Center at Stony Brook and in that capacity they organize Japanese Cultural events throughout Long Island. The highlight of these events is the Sakura Matsuri- Cherry Blossom Festival. They were awarded the 2010 Suffolk County “Asian American Lifetime Award” for personal achievement and outstanding contributions to the Asian American Community.
