But Fido always brings us closer. WHAT DOES A PANDEMIC, ECONOMIC CRISIS AND CHAOS IN THE STREET OF AMERICA HAVE
Greg and Susan Sims FIDO Friendly Magazine with Spokesperson Brandon McMillan for Get Your Licks on Route 66®
IN COMMON? Is it a sign of a world in desperation or is it a wake-up call? There isn’t a burden of all this change, FIDO Friendly included. As your dog travel magazine, we have had fun over the past 20 years bringing you hotel and destination reviews where both you and Fido are welcome. This summer issue is not different with the exception of due to COVID-19 we will be bringing you great editorial in a digital format only. The upside is that we can reach even more dog-loving travelers 24/7 with our digital publication. We are also gearing up for our 12th Annual cross-country pet adoption tour, Get Your Licks on Route 66® where we travel each year from Los Angeles to Chicago, stopping at shelters along the way to support adoption events and to raise money for the shelters. If it is safe to travel, you might see a difference at the events, social distancing, wearing masks to keep safe the more vulnerable amongst us but what won’t be different is our passion to help make a difference in the lives of shelter pets. In the first 11 years, we have helped to place over 14,000 pets into new forever homes. (see 2019 tour wrap up on page 22) Our cover features for the third time, Brandon McMillan, host of Lucky Dog on CBS. He is also our tour spokesperson for the seventh year running. We are grateful that he continues to lend his celebrity status to help shed light on the plight of shelter pets. Read his amazing story where he is candid about his life experiences to being where he is today, one of America’s most beloved animal trainers. (see story on page 16) There is a lot of good going on out there, sometimes it’s hard to remember that in the midst of so much uncertainty. One thing I know for sure is that the human heart has a lot of room for compassion, forgiveness and understanding. The Summer issue is dedicated to bringing out the best in all of us as we navigate these uncertain times together. Stay Safe!

Imagine a respected and beloved animal trainer with fans and friends all over the world. Then imagine this same person who only ten years earlier, contemplated suicide on a bridge in Pasadena, California. If you can’t imagine how someone who felt hopeless could become the well-loved and respected host of Lucky Dog on CBS, then Brandon can tell you how.

“She was in a Kentucky shelter and they were waiting for the perfect person to adopt her. She’s called a double Merle which is when they breed two Merles and when that happens it’s most likely they will have extreme health issues, kind of a no-no in the breeding world. If they have five puppies, two to three turn out well, the rest are often left with health issues.” Brandon got to work with her right away. “I dove into my arsenal,” he said. “I trained her on touch. A tap to her right side meant SIT. Tap left side; lie down; double tap the chest means stay. A slight rub on chin meant follow. Also trained her to a vibrating collar so if she was somewhere point location.” It normally takes Brandon two weeks to train a dog however, with Sapphire it took nine months. After training, finding the right forever home would be a challenge. “A woman in Missouri fell in love with her photo. I knew her and she has a lot of experience with dogs. Sapphire is trained to be a therapy dog and continues to train.” Just as the Pandemic hit, Brandon was in Egypt on the first vacation he had taken since forever. “I had planned this trip for six months. I noticed that I have become a workaholic. Unhealthy to put yourself in a position with sleepless nights thinking about work. All because I dedicated myself to something. My personality is I get fanatic about what I decide to dedicate myself to and it takes a mental toll. Took me years to realize that. Hadn’t had a vacation in years. Last one was 2010 when I went to Baja for four days.” Watching Brandon during Shark Week is a vicarious thrill and looks like a passion project. “It’s true,” he says. “I am on a boat and diving, things I would do on a vacation but still on the clock and working for a big network. Have a deadline. Not like I’m relaxing in the water; worried about getting the shots, come back on the deck look at views all day. Believe it or not I have been around the world to every single my career. 45 of those countries I have never seen it the way I should have seen it. I have worked in Peru for six weeks straight, right near Machu Picchu but couldn’t actually see it because I was working.” Brandon worked in Australia for months at a time, right next to the barrier reef but never

got to see it because he was working. “People often think that you get to work in the countries that you’ve seen the world,” he said. “I have seen the world but have seen it through the eyes of a production company, not through the eyes of myself.” “My vacation in Egypt was supposed to be about my time away from animals,” he says. “Kind of proud of myself, going to take a vacation and not see an animal the whole time. Bold statement for me. I don’t want to see a dog, get away by myself for two weeks and what did I end up doing 90% of the time? In every single day?? I found a pack of strays and fed them every day.” With his hotel located on the Nile and suffering from jet lag, Brandon decided to take a walk after he heard a pack of dogs through the window. “I couldn’t sleep with the time change anyway,” he says. “It was midnight, I had some energy so I’m just going to walk. but didn’t have any food. They were barking at me, protecting their territory trying to take shots at me and so I was like, alright I’ll be back in the morning. The next morning I ate breakfast and took toast, bacon, all kinds of stuff and went down there and started feeding the pack. They wanted no part of me the first day. I would throw bacon about six feet away and still they wouldn’t come. So day after day I started going to the store and buying big packs of salami, turkey, and took me five days and eventually they learned to trust me.” With 15 to 20 dogs around him and puppies jumping on him, he noticed all the locals were looking at him, their jaws were dropped. “They didn’t understand what I was doing,” he said. “They had never seen anyone do that, and I was thinking ‘what is everyone looking at, what’s the big deal?’ This guy spoke perfect English, said they think you are a sorcerer. Why? ‘Because no one has successfully lured the whole pack in.’ But I’m doing it with meat, it’s pretty easy. ‘That’s the other thing’ he says. ‘The average Egyptian is very poor and eats meat once a year. You have been feeding these strays meat every single day you’ve been here. You have fed them more meat than the average person will eat in a whole year here.’

12th Annual Cross-County Pet Adoption Event: Get Your Licks ® on Route 66 By Susan Sims, Publisher
The Pet Adoption Tour travels from Los Angeles to Chicago each year to support adoption events and to raise money for the shelters with our sponsor supported spinning wheel. My husband Greg and I along with our two rescued hounds, Junior and Honey, are setting off again for our two months on the road to support adoption events across the country. Even with COVID-19 looming in the headlines, we are excited to travel across the United States to work with shelters and their volunteers to help shed light on the plight of homeless pets. Legends Van Rentals is our official vehicle sponsor by providing us a Sprinter and Animal Radio is once again our media sponsor. DAPPER DOGS Teenager Sir Darius Brown helps dogs get adopted with his stylish bow ties.
HIS LOVE FOR ANIMALS INSPIRED HIM TO HELP THE NUMEROUS DISPLACED PETS.

DOGGIES ARE LOOKING DAPPER IN BOW TIES ALL ACROSS AMERICA in an effort to appeal to prospective

adopters. Thanks to 13-year-old Sir Darius Brown, who always looks dashing himself in these ties he creates, more of the animals have been finding homes. As a youngster, Brown was diagnosed with several developmental issues, which included a fine motor skills delay—a condition that makes gripping and other hand manipulations difficult. By the time the New Jersey youth turned eight, in an effort to improve movement in them, he assisted in cutting and stitching the fabrics needed for the hair ribbons his sister, Dazhai Shearz fashioned. In time, he developed an interest in bow ties. That interest quickly turned into a passion and has become a regular finishing touch to his attire whenever he heads out. Inspired by his sister’s hair accessory business, Brown established his own as people were taking notice and fancying the bow ties for themselves. After the devastations of the hurricanes Harvey and Irma his love for animals inspired him to help the numerous displaced pets—many of which were at risk of euthanasia. Some of those animals were moved to the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals in nearby New York. In hopes that dressing them in bow ties would increase their chances of finding homes, he donated a batch to the organization. Encouraged from the resulting success, he has since expanded his efforts to include other shelters in his region and beyond. Soon he was whipping up large quantities of his smart-looking neckwear. Though proceeds from sales help, to ease the financial concerns of the supplies needed, Shearz set up a GoFundMe account. Donations also help with shipping costs and travel between shelters. Brown has received numerous accolades for his efforts and has been recognized by the media in all forms. Even former President Barack Obama, in a letter of recognition, praises Brown for his entrepreneurship and kindness to others with added words of encouragement to continue. His goals include personally donating bow ties to shelters in all 50 states and to assist in adoption events. Brown regularly speaks at conferences to inspire and educate others. A venture that started because a devoted mom and sister wanted to improve their loved one’s life has turned into a unique and creative way to help animals. As for Brown, Shearz says, “My brother has improved not only physically, but I’m proud of how mature he has become and how much he is willing to give of himself.” ‹ CHERYL SMYTH enjoys exploring nature and finding travel destinations she can share with her best pal—her dog, Tessi.

A Hound and a Hacienda Spain is a great country for those new to housesitting, with thousands of 'sits' advertised there every year lasting from just a couple of days to months at a time. There are around a quarter of a million British expats in Spain and an extraordinary percentage of those have dogs. The long car drive combined with a ferry trip to get back to the UK means homeowners are frequently looking for a sitter: rural properties are best left occupied, and dogs are happiest when staying home. The statistics in Spain are alarming. Even the lowest figures show over 100,000 dogs being abandoned annually, and many of these are rescued and adoptions organised by groups set up by expats. The sun and the slow, gentle lifestyle of the countryside seem to soothe these damaged dogs, making Spanish housesits far and away some of the most hassle-free, relaxing times I have experienced.

Who’s The Better WHETHER OR NOT YOU’RE AN ANIMAL PERSON, it’s hard to deny that most people consider their pets as part of the family. In fact, some owners treat their pets more like children than a furry extension of the immediate family. Pet parents spent an estimated $32.7 billion on food and treats in 2018—with some owners even going so far as to pay for pet day care, pricey tech gadgets, and acupuncture. People definitely love their pets, but how do our four-legged companions feel about us in return? For a closer look at who’s the better pet parent, we surveyed over 1,000 people. Keep reading to learn whether men or women think their pets are more attached to them, how often couples argue over petrelated responsibilities, and how many people modify their homes for the sake of their furry family. I T ’ S D E F I N I T E LY A CO M P E T I T I O N It’s true that pets can’t verbally articulate how they feel about us when we say, “I love you,” but they do still have ways of showing us how much they care. When they climb up on the couch to cuddle, look at you for an extended period, follow you to bed, or greet you at the door, those are all signs of affection. Of course, if you share your pet with the rest of the family, you might at least be curious to know who they love the most. While men and women largely believed they and their partner are equally good as pet parents, men were quick to point out their partner (31 percent) might be a better pet provider than they are (16 percent). Women (33 percent) also saw themselves as more likely to contribute to a pet’s well-being than their partner (nearly 12 percent). On the matter of the favorite pet parent, women suggested they had the upper hand again. Compared to 44 percent of women who believed they’re more loved than their partner, just 36 percent of men felt the same. Less than 1 in 4 men and women believed their pets love both people in the relationship equally. However, 1 in 5 pet parents also admitted to getting jealous when their pets paid more at tention to their partner.
42 Summer 2020
Pet Parent? PLENT Y TO GO AROUND Both partners likely love their pets equally. But when it comes to pet-related responsibilities, it might be a different story. Of the more than 1,000 people polled, women were twice as likely as men to say they do more for their pets than their partner. When asked about their shared responsibilities, playing (71 percent), feeding (59 percent), and cleaning up after the pet (50 percent) were the most likely to be fairly distributed. In contrast, couples were less likely to split grooming and letting the pet in or out in the morning and at night. More than 1 in 3 women and 1 in 4 men agreed they would prefer to see their partner take on more pet-related responsibilities. As we found, couples who shared pet duties were more likely to be satisfied with their relationship (95 percent) than those who did not (almost 87 percent). T R O U B L E I N PA R A D I S E There are plenty of reasons why life with a pet is so much better than life without one. The unwavering devotion, constant companionship, and even extra physical activity all promote a healthier life. Owning a pet isn’t without its challenges, though, and deciding who should be responsible for what can occasionally cause strife between couples. According to our poll, 1 in 5 pet parents admitted to arguing about their furry companions at least once in the past year. The biggest cause of these disputes? Daily responsibilities (60 percent), spending on essentials (40 percent), and letting their pet sleep in the bed (31 percent). Couples who had both cats and dogs were more likely to argue about their animals than those with only one type of pet. And another 6 percent of respondents acknowledged ending a relationship over a petrelated argument.
Summer 2020 43
GOING THE EXTR A MILE When you truly love your pet, you probably want them to enjoy your home as much as you do. Whether for older pets or to make getting around more convenient, more than 2 in 5 pet parents chose their home to accommodate their animals specifically, and nearly 2 in 3 added features for them. The most commonly added features were climbing opportunities (34 percent), gates (33 percent), fencing (32 percent), and area rugs or carpets (30 percent). On average, these added features cost pet parents $375, although costs were typically higher for people with just dogs ($499) or those owning both cats and dogs ($515). A CCO M M O D AT I N G E V E R YO N E There’s no denying that people treat their pets as if they were real people. From the ways we pamper them to the ways we travel with them, our four-legged friends have truly become members of the family. Unfortunately, owning a pet isn’t without its responsibilities, and how couples choose to divide those tasks can trigger arguments and even separation. At Porch, we believe your home improvement projects should be stress-free—and that includes the ones you take on for Fido and friends. If you’re considering making improvements to your home to accommodate your pets, our team of Porch professionals is available to help get the job done quickly and exactly the way you want it. Start your project today, and learn more about our full range of services at Porch now. M E T H O D O L O G Y A N D L I M I TAT I O N S For this project, we surveyed 1,007 respondents in a relationship who lived with their partner and had one or multiple pets. Respondents ranged in age from 19 to 76 with an average age of 38 and a standard deviation of 11.3. 554 respondents identified as women, and 452 identified as men. One respondent identified as nonbinary. 316 respondents had cats, 295 had dogs, 248 had both cats and dogs, and 148 had other pets. Originally posted on porch.com
