Preparing For Imbolc Imbolc is recognized as the start of Spring in the Celtic calendar while Ostara, the vernal equinox is recognized as the beginning of Spring. When the snowdrops start to appear in the United Kingdom, you know winter won’t last forever. It’s a major sign of Imbolc and represents that warm days will come again soon. The cycle of the year is turning still. Imbolc is also known as Imbolg, Oimelc, and the Feast of St. Brigid. It’s the halfway point between the winter solstice, Yule, and the vernal equinox, Ostara. Imbolc is often used interchangeably with Candlemas which is a Christian reinterpretation of Imbolc. Take this time to thoroughly clean and organize your home. Take out the things you no longer need for donation. Once you’ve stripped away the excess or old baggage from your home, you may choose to preform a home cleansing ritual and set new intentions. Imbolc is a time of new plans, new ideas, and getting rid of the old. Imbolc is also a time of magickal energy related to the goddess Brigid, new beginnings, and of fire. Because of its proximity to Valentine's Day, Imbolc also tends to be a time when people start exploring love magick. The following pages will teach you about love magick ethics, origins, and more.

mbolc Incense Blend

Burn incense before your Imbolc ritual or celebration to aid in cleansing your altar space and attune with the goddess Brigid. This mix calls for dried herbs. Ingredients: 2 parts cedar for purification 1 part basil for cleansing and protection 1 part cinnamon for focusing and energy 1 part peppermint for purification Add your ingredients to your mixing bowl one at a time. If the leaves or twigs need to be crushed, use your mortar and pestle to do so. As you blend the herbs together, state your intent. You can store your blend in a glass mason jar or bag to preserve the blend.

Preparing for The Imbolc Milk & Honey Ritual By Quinn Dyer Milk and honey have long been symbols of prosperity and abundance; a Biblical reference to the promised land, a place of riches and luxury. Of course, the associations of milk and honey go further back than the Bible; honey was viewed as a gift from the gods in many places in antiquity and often used in ritual. Milk is the liquid of life; suggestive of swollen wombs and motherhood. It is our first food; a substance that exists purely to nourish. Both milk and honey suggest fertility; and a ‘land flowing with milk and honey’ is metaphoric of the divine female, an earth mother capable of providing for her people, or a land blessed by her. This is my Imbolc ritual for fertility, not

necessarily in the sense of procreation, but in the sense of renewed inspiration and spiritual rebirth. It is for bringing the stirrings that are happening in the belly of Mother Earth into your own belly and inviting the renewing energy of the season into your dreams and plans. For at its core, this is what Imbolc is. This Imbolc ritual falls on a waning crescent Moon in Capricorn; a perfect time to banish those things that are holding you back from being successful monetarily. The ritual itself is simple, using items that may seem mundane: milk, herbs, honey, and hot water. I also like to save some of my Yule greens for use in my Imbolc ritual, but other herbs will serve for smudging if none are on hand.

The ritual begins with a bath. Imbolc is the perfect time for purification rituals; both a symbolic and spiritual cleansing as well as physical. To prepare, ring your tub with candles, crystals, and whatever other magickal symbols that speak to you. The candles are important though; yellow or white in particular. They act as a symbol of the light and warmth returning to the earth. The time of year to ignite change within ourselves and to shake off the stagnancy of winter and prepare for the rebirth of spring and of ourselves. Long before I begin to draw the water for my bath, I have my honey infusion prepared, using chamomile, lavender, and rosemary.

18

Chamomile has associations with the sun and used with lavender it can help bring on visions and be purifying. Lavender honey is also particularly potent for magical use, while rosemary is also purifying, as well as protective and restorative. They all have muscle relaxing properties that also aid in bringing on a trance state.

Whole springs are easy to strain and look pretty too. Always try to use raw, local honey. The darker the honey, the more potent its properties.

Bay, basil, or thyme make good additions as well. They are herbs of courage and strength; ready to help something manifest into the world and banish the obstacles in your way.

Cover herbs with honey; you’ll want to use 1-2 tablespoons of herbs per cup of honey. Seal and store in a dark, dry place. Shake daily, or as much as needed to keep herbs coated, as they may float to the top. Let sit until the desired potency is achieved (2-3 weeks, though sometimes I go an entire moon cycle) and strain out remaining plant matter. Heating the honey and herbs will quicken the process.

To create an infusion, place the dried herbs in the bottom of a mason jar. Fresh herbs can cause mold and bacteria to form and compromise safety. Herbs can be chopped or whole. Chopped herbs will infuse into the honey more quickly, but are harder to strain out.

Some of this honey infusion I will mix with milk into hot cider to sip in the tub. The element of fire is central in the celebration of Imbolc; and I will be using it to brew up a vat of hot mulled apple cider. Mine will be alcoholic, though that’s certainly not necessary. I

personally, enjoy using substances that open the senses for ritual use; in moderation. Milk, as well as honey, are gifts from our animal companions. While I am not vegan, I understand the reasons behind it. The care and well-being of an animal is important. Abuse or neglect or even just ambivalence can taint the ingredients in a spell. So while these items are pantry staples, it may be worth going out of your way to find the real deal. Personally, I love hunting down local farms and dairies to get the my milk and honey. Visit me on the next page for the details of my Imbolc Milk & Honey Ritual. -Quinn

mbolc Milk & Honey Ritual By Quinn Dyer

With this simple ritual, a smudge, a soak, and some candles, we can take the time and effort to honor the Goddess; let her fill our lives with renewed purpose and nourishing energy. You’ll Need:

Ritual beverage- hot mulled apple cider with herb infused honey is preferred Herb infused honey

Candles and crystals to create a sacred space Prepare your bathtub with candles and crystals, and draw a bath. Then add in a dollop of

infused honey into the hot bath, at least enough to let loose the smell of the honey and herbs.

Then, stir the steaming water clockwise three times. Light your candles and lean back and sip your drink. While relaxing in the steaming water, it is time to consider what you wish to bring about and manifest.

With your mind focused and your body at ease, take a small bundle of Yuletide greens,

rosemary and pine and hold them up to the candles’ flames until they ignite. Smudge and then, sit and soak until the hot water drives out the winter’s chill and burns away any self-doubt and emotional baggage from the previous year.

Once you are finished with your bath, unplug the drain and allow all of your worries dissolve into the water that is trickling down the drain. And remember, new growth doesn’t happen

overnight. Blossoms do not burst into full bloom in a day; it is gradual. It takes nurturing.

Origins of Valentine’s Day Every February 14, across the United States and in other places around the world, candy, flowers and gifts are exchanged between loved ones, all in the name of St. Valentine. Valentine’s Day originated from the pagan festival Lupercalia which is a celebration of fertility and purification. It’s a 3-day event that runs from the 13th to 15th of February. Lupercalia is a festival honoring the birth of Romulus and Remus, the twin founders of the city. As Lupercalia evolved and time went on, it morphed into a festival honoring fertility and the coming of spring. Lupercalia survived the initial rise of Christianity but was outlawed as it was deemed “unChristian”at the end of the 5th century, when Pope Gelasius declared February 14 St. Valentine’s Day. It was

not until much later, however, that the day became definitively associated with love. During the Middle Ages, it was commonly believed in France and England that February 14 was the beginning of birds’ mating season, which added to the idea that the middle of Valentine’s Day should be a day for romance. Who was St. Valentine? Valentine was a young priest that lived during Emperor Claudius’ reign. In his desire to perform his Christian duties of administering wedding ceremonies and aiding prisoners, he disobeyed the orders of the emperor.

was regularly visited by his jailer’s blind daughter whom he later fell in love with. Before Valentine’s execution, he wrote her a note and ending it with the phrase “From Your Valentine.” No one knows if this story is true, but the romantic gesture has stayed throughout history. LOVE SPELL ETHICS By Ambrosia Hawthorn Casting spells for love is one of the most popular forms of used magick. When you think of casting a love spell, what comes to mind? Is it creating love potions or sachets? Love magick is often blown out of proportion in various media outlets. And as nice as it sounds, you need to fully understand what it is you're going to be doing to another being. Do you believe that it’s unethical to cast love spells and in doing spells similar to this, you’re trying to take away another’s free will? Or do you believe casting these love spells to be similar to just catching someone else’s attention by any means? While I don’t promote casting love spells on others, it’s important to look at all sides of the situation. I have a 25

Wiccan background and I can still hear part of the Wiccan Rede, “An’ it harm none, do as ye will.” ring in my ears.

spell ethics and to also be driven by our emotions. Extreme emotions can prompt us to do extreme things.

However, with that being said I’ve seen many who believe it’s unethical but when their hearts are the one in question, they dive headfirst into love magick against or for another.

If you look to history in old forms of magick, you will most certainly see different types of love magick and spells.

Love can make us crazy at times and warp our view of what is right and wrong. I think it is truly important to reflect and discuss your own ethics about this matter and decide what is right for you and your practice before you get yourself into a situation of casting a love spell. To do this, clearly define your own morality regarding love magick before you really need it. When casting spells for love, it’s easy ignore

Magick helps us gain control in areas of our lives which may feel like utter chaos. Does that remind you of any of your relationships? I know it did for me. Have I wanted to hex someone? Yes. Did I? No. Have I worn a love sachet in my pocket? Yes. Finding where your lines are is extremely important when practicing love magick. Take time and decide where your ethics are. -Ambrosia

LET LOVE LEAD THE WAY By Stefanina Baker

Imbolc is a time of midwinter. This is a season when we are home with loved ones, snuggling under cozy blankets and next to crackling fires. It’s only natural that feelings of love come about, all of that closeness is bound to spark romance, or the desire for love. It is for those reasons February brings to mind feelings of love. This an excellent time to do love rituals of all kinds, self-love, romantic love, friendship, familial love, etc. A caution however: When doing love spells, it is wise to invite the right lover to you, instead of forcing someone (a stranger, an ex, a friend) to love you with magick and energy. Those types of workings don’t come easily and are not recommended for the beginner. A seasoned practitioner may avoid control spells of this kind as they are harder to manifest, because it is about bending someone else’s will. In other words, making “Jonny” fall in love with you is not as productive as attracting the right lover for you.

S

elf-love & Embracing You Talisman By Stefanina Baker You will need:

3 pink or white candles

Jewelry piece that’s close to you

A smudge bundle of rose and/or lavender (if you don’t have either, use what incense or smudging spray you have)

To begin, light your smudging material. Make a triangle with your candles

around your jewelry piece. As you light the candles, say to each, one at a time, “Beauty… Power… Respect.” Then say,

“Beauty, power, and respect are already mine, So I shall treat myself in kind.”

Let the candles burn out and then wear your charged jewelry as a talisman of beauty, power, and respect.

A

ttracting Love With St. Valentine By Stefanina Baker You will need:

One large red 7-day candle

A smudge bundle of rose and/or lavender (if you don’t have either, use what incense or smudging spray you have) A Pinch of dried lavender

One dried petal of rose, crumbled Love oil blend *

Picture of St. Valentine Offering of honey

To begin, smudge your space. Then, add a drop of oil to the candle, and use that

oil to dress the top of the candle. After that, sprinkle your dried herbs over your candle, letting them fall where they may.

Then set up your candle and picture of St. Valentine on your altar. Asking for help with attracting the right lover to you. Leave an offering of honey for St. Valentine. Let this candle burn until it is finished. If you cannot leave it burning, you must use a plate to smother the flame out, do not blow it out. *I sell love oils in my shop.

A love sachet is a great way to inspire attraction towards you. Create a small drawstring pouch out of fabric. This can be red or even a piece of your partner’s clothing. Fill it with cinnamon, rosemary, and a piece of rose quartz. Carry it in your pocket or purse.

Ancestor Love & Abundance Spell By Rebecca Troy I love spell casting. There is nothing about the process that I don't enjoy. But, I am fiercely protective over my time and effort, so, if I choose to cast a spell, I'll make sure it truly reflects the deepest desires of my heart, and, therefore, will be ensured to be a powerful and successful endeavor. This is the reason I only cast self-love and healing spells. To truly attract one's soul mate I paradoxically only focus on myself and my needs. Heal thy self and you will attract all that you desire, a soul mate included. For February, the month of love and light, I am going to share with you a profound spell that calls on your ancestors not only for support but to clear old, even ancient energy that might be holding you back from attracting all that you desire. We all hold both beauty and darkness from our ancestors, why not work with them to release old karma, leaving a clear path for love, and all that life can offer you. 33

For the spell you will need two candles- tea light candles, spell candles, or even birthday candles work well as they burn down within an hour. Use any color candles you deem fit, white candles for purification, black for dispelling negativity, or, pink to encourage self-love and femininity- a way of being needed for initiating internal and external love. To prepare for the spell, anoint the candles with homemade cinnamon oil or any household or kitchen oil with cinnamon spice added will do. Cinnamon is great for all-round abundance, including attracting wealth of all kinds, and it's sweet and spicyperfect for partner attraction. Walk in light, and embrace your shadows. -The Merry Way Witch

A

ncestor Love & Abundance Spell By Rebecca Troy

Prepare yourself and your altar for spellwork as you normally would. This is a good time to open your protection circle utilizing the elementals if you wish. When your circle is complete and you have called on those you wish to for protection, be seated. Place your anointed candles on either side of you then light them. The candle on the left represents your past and your ancestors. The candle on the right is your future, free from anything that can hold you back. Close your eyes and imagine a rope or cord tied to your waist; it reaches all the way back into time. The cord might appear to be gold in color to begin with. Ask for the ancestors who wish to receive healing to step forward and grab onto the cord. Through the cord send healing back to all. Send extra healing back to your female bloodline if that feels comfortable to you. Be still. There might be messages or images for you. When the time is right and you'll know when, give thought to everything you want to achieve, sum these desires up in one word, freedom, love, abundance etc. Write that word in the air over the candle located to your right. And, as you do declare (internally or externally) that you have the beauty and the self-love to know you deserve what you desire. Breathe.

Ask for any final messages from your guides or ancestors. Thank them for being there for you. Close the circle by releasing the elements if you chose to do this when creating your circle. Either place the candles on your altar or watch them as they burn down. In the days to come, light a white candle on your altar for the memory of your healed bloodline. Hold onto your new-found desire, take it with you everywhere until you begin to see it manifest in all aspects of your life.

Brigid’s Sacred Fire

By Bridget Engels

Brigid is a powerful and ancient Triple Goddess and associated with healing, poetry and smithcraft all united by her element of fire- fires of inspiration, fires of the forge, and fires of the hearth. Her origins are complex and varied. A daughter of a Celtic chieftain who rose to power and popularity by healing the sick and uniting tribes in Ireland during the pre-Christian era. She became so popular and ingrained in Celtic Pagan history that she eventually transitioned into Christianity and was canonized by the Catholic church. She was known by many names. The Irish called her Brighde; she was Bride in

Scotland, Brigantia in Northern Britain, and Brigandu in France. Her eternal flame was kept alive in Kildare, Ireland by 19 vestal priestesses who guarded over her flame at her sacred fire temple until the 6th century when a monastery was built on the same site. All wells are sacred to Brigid for they are the doorway to the Underworld and the womb of our Mother, the source of all life. She is both goddess and saint. The Sisters of the Brigidine Order in Kildare currently embrace her goddess aspect and merge the old world with the new. The sabbat of Imbolc on February 2nd, is sacred to the goddess Brigid- St. Bridget’s

Day and Candlemas. Here we can see the indications of winter slowly turning the corner to spring. The days get slightly longer even though we are still within the deepest of winter here in North America. On this day the ancient Celts held their Fire Festival in honor of Brigid. Brigid has also been beside me through some very dark and tough times when I needed a light that seemed to be hidden from my path. She is ever-present within me- guiding and blessing me with her flame of inspiration as I strive to keep an open connection with her fire within myself.

36

I personally have been guided by Brigid (my namesake), throughout my life and career as a painter, artist, Art Director, Wiccan Priestess creating and leading women’s Moon rituals, and as a writer with my Moon goddess meditations. Goddess Brigid is essentially the sacred flame within all of us. These are not only the flames of inspiration, passion, and creativitybut also of purification and transformation. Brigid’s truth is sometimes not easy because to make way for the new and original- we need to realize and consciously let go, or burn away what no longer serves us. Brigid knows this and can be with us on our path. She helps ignite

Brigid’s Sacred Fire 37

this flame so that we can remake, reimagine and make new again moving with the unending cycles of life.

All acts of creation are ways to worship Brigid and connect with her energy. Be open to her inspiration within you.

I invite you to take a journey with this guided Brigid-New Moon mediation from my book, The Oracle of Luna: Meditations with the Moon Goddess.

Hail Brigid and Blessed be! -Bridget

Brigid February New Moon Meditation From: The Oracle of Luna: Meditations with the Moon Goddess – Vol. I By Bridget Engels Take a few deep breaths and close your eyes. Release all your cares and concerns from the day. Get comfortable. Ground and center and gently go within. Let it all go. We are going on a journey. See yourself walking on a ridge. Your white, long, wool robes flapping in the chilly wind. The late winter sun is setting over the tops of the highland hills. Here and there snow and ice are scattered from the last storm over the rocks and brushes. You make your way to the top of one of the ridge and notice the steep drop down. A wild wind rips up from behind you and throws your footing off balance. Your arms flail out to try and balance and catch yourself from falling but it is too late. You are twirling and falling down, down, down the steep dark ravine. After slowly falling, your body lands on a grassy mound with a thump. The surface is a curved roof top made of solid earth. You try to stand up and dust yourself off but again slip and then slide down the top of the mound and land at what looks like an entrance into a dark tunnel. Afraid and breathless, you gather your courage to enter this dark doorway. Darkness surrounds you outside and it feels like the entrance may lead you to shelter. You enter the doorway into the tunnel of the mound. Carefully you move forward placing your hands in front of you. It is silent and the only sound is your breath and your slow footsteps. The tunnel now leads to a stairway down that opens to a dark circular cavern. There is no light except for a tiny flame emanating from the middle of the floor. You move closer to the flame and gaze at it for a while feeling its hypnotic pull. The flame begins to grow a little higher as you feel entranced. It grows slightly higher and now you see the surface of the ceiling and walls have reddish, deep orange hues. Still staring into the flame- you can now make what looks like a shape of a woman’s face contorting with the flame as it grows ever taller and brighter. A pair of eye flashes out of the flame. You jump back in fear. Suddenly the flame bursts up into a full height of a flame-like woman shape before you. Stepping back from her heat and unearthly force you try and look away but her piercing eyes are locking deep into your soul now keeping you frozen in your place before her. There are sounds of feet moving soft and steady somewhere near the stone cavern walls now. The footsteps grow closer and closer. Into the cavern come thirteen shrouded and wearing all white priestesses forming a circle silently around the tiny central flame. Humming a low chant they stand facing the flame which appears to be getting higher and larger by the minute. The shadows of the priestesses on the walls of the cavern leap and grow- their shrouded faces are illuminated. The flame now expands and shoots up into a flaming woman with golden flame-like hair and a green mantle over a white flowing gown. She is radiant and extremely powerful. She moves towards you. You feel her heat.

38

She speaks now: “I Brigid, now charge you all to enliven your passions and know that within you is an invincible flame that will always be there to give you courage and inspiration. Prepare Sisters, to reach within me and find where you can heal, grow create and love for yourself in your own lives.” One by one each Sister comes forth and touches Brigid’s flame and then cradle a little fire with their cupped hands. They are holding sacred flames that do not burn their hands. Each sister steps back into circle surrounding the Goddess Brigid cradling their sacred flames and their humming turns into a chant: “Follow the light within…follow the light within…”. Over and over as it becomes more powerful and you lose yourself in the intensity. Feel this enchantment permeate your being. Just then, Brigid fixes her glowing eyes directly onto you. She speaks into your mind: “What will your flame look like Sister? What special passion do you carry within you that you want to express? Come forth and take from me…cradle this flame. May it kindle your own passion and inspire others to do so when you leave here. Honor this flame and never let it go out…let it shield and surround you!” You walk forth to her and reach your hands into her flaming body even though you fear being burned- you are unhurt and the sacred fire you cup into your hands fills your heart with strength and love. You stand in circle now with the other priestesses are all chanting a little quieter now. Soon they begin to move out of the sacred fire chamber up the stairs and so you follow them. You turn back to look at Brigid but she is gone and just a tiny flame is lit in the center again. You follow the other priestesses out of the cavern and into the dark, crisp new moon night. Carrying all the sacred flames in their cupped hands still they make their way up to a hilltop with a clearing. You see the circle of large ancient stones as they all gather within it. They begin to dance slowly intertwining in and out of small circles and linking their arms while still holding their flames in one cupped hand. Gaily smiling and laughing you join this unique and mystical dance beneath the ancient stones. Suddenly they stop their dance and begin one by one to walk out of the stone circle in different directions. You walk out too guided by your little flame. You walk into the dark hilltops and snow begins to fall gently. You now make out the ridge that you walked on that you came from earlier. Gradually a glowing light blazes a pathway before you to the ridge and so trusting that Brigid is guiding you… you follow the lighted path in the dark snowy night. You step over a ledge and fall gently in the air, unafraid… deep into the void. You land gently onto a snowdrift and breathe deeply. You are safe and feel honored, eternal and inspired. Slowly take a few more breaths and gently let yourself come back to present time and place. When you are ready; open your eyes…Thank Brigid for her wisdom of fire and your journey with her. Blessed be! Brigid February New Moon Meditation 39

Goddess Brigid

Brigid is a Celtic goddess known throughout Europe as “the bright one” because of her inspiring beauty and fiery qualities. She is also associated with healing, poetry and smithcraft all united by her element of fire- fires of inspiration, fires of the forge, and fires of the hearth. She is known by many names, Brigit, Brighid, Briget, Brighde, Brigantia, Brigandu, and including Saint Brigid who is, perhaps, the most powerful religious figure in Irish history. Brigid’s Day, Imbolc, or Feast of St. Brigid is usually February 1st or 2nd because it is the traditional first day of spring in the Celtic calendar. It’s a time when lingering winter shadows are banished by the radiating Sun. To work with the goddess Brigid, call on her for creativity, divination, fertility, inspiration, and healing magick. You can honor this goddess by making yourself a warm soup or even a warm cup of tea, calling on Brigid, and setting your intentions then drinking or eating your preparation. Themes: Health, fertility, and inspiration. Symbols: Cauldron, fire, poetry, Brigid’s cross and knot, and milk.

Rhodochrosite is the "stone of love and balance". It’s a pink stone banded with white. It is used to attract and nourish love. It is also particularly powerful in healing issues of the past, including past lives. Rhodochrosite heals the heart and cleanses the aura of unhealthy emotions.

TOP CRYSTALS FOR LOVE

Amethyst is the “couples stone” and has always been associated with February, the month the Romans dedicated to Neptune, their water god, and is the traditional birthstone of that month. A stone of pure, true emotional love.

Rose quartz is the preeminent love stone. The color comes from titanium tinting the naturally clear or white quartz, and with this addition, the quartz carries the vibration of unconditional love. It is used in all manner of self-esteem and confidence spells and is the heart of charms for true magickal love.

Serpentine is used as an amulet to protect you from harm, particularly the bites of poisonous animals and insects, yet it is also used as a charm for love and romance, being a green stone ruled by Venus. Serpentine can help prevent poisoning a relationship with jealousy or mistrust.

Azurite is a deep-blue stone with properties associated with peace, healing, and unconditional love. While it doesn’t have traditional correspondence with romantic love, it forms with many other copper compounds that do, such as turquoise, malachite, and chrysocolla. 42

GETTING TO KNOW Author,

Aisha Amarfio Aisha Amarfio is the author of CRYSTALS: A Guide to Using the Crystal Compass for Energy, Healing, and Reclaiming Your Power

Can you tell the us a little about you and your practice? I am shamanic healer by trade, I have had a healing clinic in London since 2011. Shamanic healing is concerned with restoring wholeness, harmony and balance, working in communion with spirit and nature. It is an ancient form of energy medicine and addresses the spiritual or energetic root causes of imbalance. Working with nature allies, such as plant medicine or crystals, is common in shamanism. I have been working with crystals for around 12 years. Crystals were actually an entry point for me into healing and energy work. In the book I combine my experience from shamanic healing with my knowledge of crystals to offer the reader a guide to using crystals for e n e r g y, h e a l i n g a n d reclaiming your power.

43

“ Although the book is about crystals, the bigger message is about how we relate with our soul and the world around us.

How do you incorporate crystals into your work? Crystals are energy conductors and have a correcting effect on our energy field according to our needs and the properties of the crystal. They have the power to clear us of blockages and channel life force energy to emergent parts of our soul, so that we can express the fullness of who we are. Shamanic healing is all about unlocking people’s gifts through clearing energies that are no longer serving us and realigning our energy to be in harmony with our soul.

Crystals can become powerful tools in shamanic healing sessions, and I often use black tourmaline for clearing and clear quartz, rose quartz and hematite for soul integration, amongst others, but those are the regulars in my tool box!

What inspired you to write your new book, CRYSTALS: A Guide to Using the Crystal Compass for Energy, Healing, and Reclaiming Your Power?

the process of deepening my relationship with the crystals so that they could tell the story. I learnt so much more than what I knew from the writing process.

Since my first encounter, I have had an affinity with crystals and I have always known that they would play a huge part in my life and what I did for a living, but I never envisioned I’d have the opportunity to write about them!

There are lots of great books and resources out there that catalogue the properties and qualities of crystals, so I wanted to create a book that was a little bit different and the crystals inspired me to do that. The book takes the reader on a holistic spiritual healing journey, though practical exercises and tools that enable the person choose the right crystal at the right time. The crystals are ordered by a compass that is divided across the elements of Earth, Water, Fire and Air, with each element representing key areas in our life.

It was just over a year and a half ago, in a shamanic journey that I received spiritual guidance that it was time for me to write a book. Lo and behold, a few days later a publisher reached out to me out of the blue and asked me if I’d be interested in writing a book about crystals. Of course it was a resounding yes, and I began

Earth relates to our body, and our strong foundations in the world such as home life and security. Water relates to our emotion, intuition and our relationship with ourself and others. Fire relates to the mind, and our ability to direct our power and will in the world. And Air relates to our spirt and our connection to something greater. When we encounter a block in one of the elements it can manifest in many ways in our life. The book allows you to identify where you are encountering a block and how you can use crystals to heal that part of yourself and reclaim your power.

Who is your book aimed at? The book is aimed at anyone who wants to deepen in their spiritual journey and implement crystal healing in their life. I really wanted it to be accessible to anyone wherever they were at on their journey. Is there anything else you would like Witchology Magazine readers to know about you or your book? Although the book is about crystals, the bigger message is about how we relate with our soul and the world around us. The more we can connect to our soul, the more we can live our authentic self and make decisions that serve the whole. Crystals give us a safe space to check in with the more soulful parts of who we are; the parts of us that can often get hijacked or suppressed by conditioning, beliefs, societal pressures, fears or relationships that are just no longer serving us. The book is about prioritizing self-love and self-enquiry so that we are able to respond to what our soul is asking of us. No-one has ever taught us how to do that, but crystals can. Crystals help us to amplify our wisdom and harness the power of our intuition, so that we can listen to the intelligence of our bodies, work with rather than against our emotions, reclaim our power from that which oppresses us, and come in to wholeness to express our soul dream. I hope that readers can unlock these powers from reading the book and using the compass.

Sarah

is The Merry Way Witch, a writer, and occultist. She is dedicated to making the dreams of future badass modern witches a reality. @rebecca_alchemywitch

has been practicing personally for 16 years, but it wasn't until a year ago that she started her witchy business, The Tiny Cauldron. @tinycauldron

Q: How did you come to be a witch?

Q: How long does it take to be a witch?

A: Short answer: Fate. In my experience witchcraft finds you.

Many will share that as soon as you decide that being a witch is what you want to be, then you are one.

I was lucky to be raised in a household that embraced occultist values. It was in many ways an environment rich with the ideals of Witchcraft; I guess I was born into the Craft. My mother used the Ouija board often and told stories of psychic experiences, tarot readings, and ghost sightings, so, when myself and my sisters also began to work within these realms we were given space and respected.

If you'd like to take on that title from the beginning of your practice, then that is your choice. It’s no different than when you’re given a new job, you take on that job title. Calling yourself a witch functions the same way.

When I fully embraced witchcraft as a way of life, it felt like a second skin, so natural that the personal power I always felt within me finally had somewhere to be nurtured and grow, magickal practices became my soul's desire. I had finally found a home among the ancient, herbal, and feminine-respected beliefs of my ancestors. 47

I believe that if you call yourself a witch, you have to work consistently for that title to be accurate. Actively seeking knowledge about what witchcraft means, practicing your craft, incorporating it into your life, and understanding the weight and history of what you're engaging in is all a part of the title. When you do these things consistently, that's when I believe that you've crossed the path from dabbler in magick to witch.

Q: Do you have any advice for witches in the closet? Most Witches that are "in the closet" are usually there because they are afraid of what people may think once they come out. I know this feeling all too well. Even now, I am 31 years old and it is 2019 and people still openly (to my face) judge me and my choices. For example, I recently had two co-workers ask me to think of my daughter and what raising her "differently" from all the other kids would do to her. They tried to tell me that I should be more quiet and less open about my religious path because it would affect her negatively. Lucky for me, I was raised by a strong mother who taught me to have more faith in humans than that.

K. Freeling

is a devout Pagan witch and a working mother in the military. Her passion is to create one of a kind florals and crystals that pay homage to the Gods. @wiccanology

We only get one life; filled with 70-80 good years to make the most out of. I ask you- why would you want to spend those years hiding who you are to make someone else feel‌ whatever it is they need to feel. You are a witch, a beacon of light, a Goddess in her own right, and this is YOUR life. Surround yourself with like minded individuals and live your life the way you were meant to. Praise whomever you want to and teach your children to be proud of who they are. My daughter will be raised in a Pagan household. She will know the Gods, she will know her craft, and as her mother I will make sure she has likeminded friends and people around her. I will never be ashamed of who I am and I will never let anyone make me feel any type of way about being a Witch, being Pagan, and simply being me because by coming out of the closet that's what you are doing, you are being the most authentic you that you can be. Now, if staying in the closet and being private about your craft is something that you personally enjoy. Then stay in there, make it cozy and decorate those doors. You could light candles, meditate, set intentions, speak to your deity every day and flow with the cycles of the Moon without anyone knowing about it. You will come out in your own time and when you are ready. As I said, this is your one and only life in this realm as the person you are today- so do whatever you want, be whomever you want, and be damn proud of it.

FAMOUS WITCHES: GERALD GARDNER (1884-1964)

Gerald Brousseau Gardner was an English civil servant, amateur anthropologist, writer and occultist born in 1884. He was instrumental in founding Wicca and Neopag anism, published three books, High Magic’s Aid (1949), Witchcraft Today (1954) and The Meaning of Witchcraft (1959) and is described by many as the “Father of Modern Wicca”. Gardner claimed to have been initiated himself into a coven of New Forest witches by a woman named Dorothy Clutterbuck. In the 1940s, being an open Wiccan was seen as radical and get you put in jail. This didn’t stop Gardner for being an open Wiccan, he moved to London to to share his knowledge and in 1949 published his first book,

High Magic’s Aid. His fictional book was filled with rituals and ceremonies, slowly but surely baiting society with his craft. Some think this book is what lead to Britain banning their hate and laws against witchcraft. When England repealed the last of its witchcraft laws in 1951, Gardner went public with his coven. It proved to be a turning point for Gardner. Gardner soon became a media celebrity, and he was dubbed “Britain’s Chief Witch” by the British press. He made numerous public appearances, making it his mission to attract young people to the Old Religion, rather than older people who would let the craft die with them.

In addition to Doreen Valiente, he initiated some of the most influential wiccans of society into his covens, including Eleanor Bone, Patricia Crowther, Monique Wilson and Raymond Buckland, who were to go on to spread wicca to a whole new generation. There was a good deal of debate within the wiccan community about whether the Gardnerian path was the only “true” wiccan tradition. One thing seems to be for certain- they were the first. @theutopianflow ISABELLE GLORIA

Interview with Isabelle Gloria of Utopian Flow We’re excited to have you Isabelle! Can you tell us a little bit about your business and service or services do you generally offer? With my project The Utopian Flow I create content together with my lovely co-founder Myriam for people who seek spiritual and holistic information. We want to inspire people to live out of a place of co-creation rather than looking for a “guru” in the external world. I believe that there are many misconceptions in the spiritual field which separate us even more instead of communicating wholeness. I just like to share what I’ve learned and continue to learn along my own spiritual journey by offering my perspective. I feel like a lot of people who become spiritual put on a mask of love and light so they can run away from the darkness. But there’s a difference between running into the light to get away from the darkness and remembering our inherent light that just has been overshadowed. The Utopian Flow has a blog section with frequent posts about spiritual, holistic, and galactic topics. We also offer monthly free downloads such as guided meditations or manifestation worksheets that our readers can work with in order to connect with themselves more. Our project also includes an actual practice that one can do at home, similar to yoga or meditation that we haven't released yet. In the future we plan to do whole programs that can been worked through within a few weeks to self-heal trauma, to learn how to love oneself more, or to better one’s self worth. We're still working on these things and I can't wait to share them! 57

What inspires you in your work? Life itself. I’ve always been spiritually interested, but after I had my open heart surgery at the age of 19, I felt like the cosmic veil had been lifted for me and my spiritual journey skyrocketed. Since then I simply attract knowledge and information into my life and also attract people who I can exchange information with. Through connecting on a spiritual level, I also learned to connect on a deeply authentic level with myself and others. I started to identify as a soul, not as a personality and I realized that every single being is playing an absolutely fundamental role in the unified field. There is a bigger picture and we’re all part of it. Through looking inside rather than searching on the outside, I could answer my biggest questions about existence for myself and I wish to inspire people to look for the same thing in themselves. It is nothing I could ever teach, because it can't be understood, it must be felt. But I can open doors for those who want to walk through them.

For The Utopian Flow, who is your intended audience? I love talking about the divine feminine and divine masculine energies because all things that go wrong in the world, in essence, come back to a disharmony of the male and female energies within each one of us. Because I am a woman obviously, I feel very inspired to share wisdom and perspectives about the Divine Feminine and I easily connect to that. I think women are more drawn to The Utopian Flow because it's all about reconnecting, soft sensual movements and receiving energy in the flow of life. Our project does not exclude men though, they are very welcome! Is there anything else you would like our readers to know about you and your business? The Utopian Flow was launched on New Year's 2018/19 and within this short amount of time we already built an amazing community of beautiful, inspired, engaged individuals and can count over 500 downloads. I am more than thankful for this and I hope our tribe will continue to grow; it is such a safe and beautiful place already. I saw many people who used to solely follow me for my modeling, join me on The Utopian Flow and I got countless sweet messages from lovely people who just started their spiritual journey.

You can find Isabelle and her business, The Utopian Flow on the following platforms: Website IG: Isabellegloria IG: Theutopianflow FB: Isabellegloriaofficial FB: Theutopianflow

My heart feels that this is a path I am supposed to go and I've never done anything creative with more love and passion than this.

uickening Moon February

Also referred to as the Ice Moon, Storm Moon, Cleansing Moon, or Hunger Moon. Some say that the name of the month of February comes from the Roman goddess Februa, who was also known as Juno Februa. Others say that the name came from the god Februus, who was later identified with the Roman Pluto or Dis. It is often a time of spiritual purification and initiation. It’s the perfect time to do give yourself love and to focus on what changes you would like to make as the cycle of the year rotates through the seasons. It’s also a good time to get crafty and work on magick with your hands. Correspondences: Colors: Light blue and violet. Gemstones: Amethyst, rose quartz, and jasper. Trees: Rowan, and myrtle. NOURISHING IMBOLC OATCAKE By Miss Wondersmith

I was inspired to develop the oat cake recipe by two of my favorite wild food bloggers - Thorn & Wonder, and Gather Victoria. Oatcakes were traditionally eaten all over Europe, both as a daily fare and dressed up with spices, fruits, or sweeteners as a celebratory dish to mark ceremonial feast days. They are particularly associated with the Celtic holiday of Imbolc, celebrated at the beginning of February. T h i s d a y, h a l f w a y b e t w e e n t h e Wi n t e r Solstice and the Spring Equinox, was when the world first starts seeing the glimmers of spring. The sap in the trees is just starting to flow then, and many farm animals have begun producing milk. It is a time of fertility, hope, and light what better to celebrate with than fertile grains and delicious herbs? But first, let’s get to know our players: Thyme is an easilyaccessible and aromatic

65

herb that can be used in many ways. It is slightly bitter and spicy and thus is great for stimulating digestion. It’s antibacterial, so helps fight off colds and fend off infections. It helps clear out the lungs and sinuses. Most supermarkets carry it in the herb section. Rosemary similarly stimulates digestion, relaxes the body, and can be a helpful herb to use when treating headaches. It’s also said to improve the memory, making it known as the “herb of remembrance” and used as part of many cultures’ funerary ceremonies. It, too, helps fluids move through the body and a steam or a tea of rosemary can help drain lungs and soothe sore throats. Wild rose is optional in all of these recipes if you don’t have a stash of petals in your cupboard like I do, but it provides a lovely and gentle floral contrast to the bitter aromatics mentioned above. Rose is the most well-known herb of love,

and that includes selflove. I always think of it as a soft and gently nourishing reminder to let us know that we are worthy, we are loved, and that all bad things shall pass. Bathing and eating foods flavored with it feels particularly luxurious, even when said food is a humble oatcake! Oatmeal has proven skincare benefits, in addition to being healthy and filling. It’s very gentle on the skin so it’s a good choice for sensitive skins. Oats are a great source of skinn u r t u r i n g avenanthramides and beta-glucan, which can treat acne, relieve itching, lower inflammation and redness, firm, and moisturize. A sticky mask will stick to any irritants on the skin too, and will help rinse them away. It’s good for your body, inside and out! -Miss Wondersmith

Intention Truffles

These intention truffles are a treat unlike no other. They are a traditional French dark chocolate dessert. These luxurious truffles make a delightful gift for the chocolate lover in your life. If you add in your intentions you can create a spelled truffle to inspire emotions. INGREDIENTS FOR 16: 2/3 c heavy cream 12 oz chocolate bittersweet, chopped 1 tsp vanilla extract 1/3 c premium dark cocoa

DIRECTIONS: -To make the truffles, in a small saucepan over medium heat, bring the heavy cream to barely a boil and remove the cream from the heat immediately. -Add the chopped chocolate and vanilla extract and stir with a wooden spoon until the mixture – now a ganache – is completely smooth. -Put the pan into the fridge and chill the ganache until it is hard enough to roll into balls - do not use the freezer, this will make the ganache unworkable. -Prep the cocoa powder into a shallow dish. -Once ganache is workable, measure out using a heaped teaspoonful, and roll the ganache into a ball. -Take each chilled chocolate roll and quickly roll the ball in the cocoa powder. Pop the coated ball onto a plate and place back into the fridge to chill down again. Optional: Focus on your intent, and create an incantation to say in your mind or out-loud. Wrap in a chocolate box or gift bag to give to the one you want to inspire emotions from.

Colcannon By Deborah Mesdag Colcannon is a traditional Irish dish of boiled potatoes and cabbage mashed together with onion and cream. The name comes from the Gaelic cal ceannann which means white-headed cabbage. I think it is too heavy with cream, but reducing the soy milk by half gives the same creaminess without the extra calories. (Which means you can add lots of vegan butter on top!) Colcannon is a lovely dish for Imbolc and I like to serve it with pasties and bean salad.

68

Colcannon By Deborah Mesdag INGREDIENTS: 2 c Silk Unsweetened Soymilk 8 large green onions 3.5 lbs (9 medium) russett potatoes 1 Tbsp Salt 1.5 lbs (1 small head) Cabbage 4 Tbsp Vegan Butter 3/4 tsp Salt 1/4 tsp Black Pepper Water for Cooking

69

DIRECTIONS: - Heat the milk and add in the green onions over medium-low heat while stirring continuously, until the mixture comes to a boil. Reduce the heat, and simmer until the milk is reduced by half. Stir every few minutes while the milk is simmering to keep it from forming a skin. - Once the milk is simmering, peel and cut up your potatoes into one inch pieces. Add them to a large saucepan and sprinkle the 1 Tbsp of salt. This is just to make the cooking water salty and very little will end up in your colcannon. Add enough water to cover the potatoes by at least half an inch, then cover the pan and bring the water to a boil. - Chop up the cabbage into strips about 1 1/2″ long by 1/2″ wide. Add the chopped cabbage to a medium-sized saucepan and add an inch of water to the bottom of the pan. Cover the pan, and heat on medium-high until the water is boiling. Reduce the heat, and simmer for about three minutes. The cabbage should be softened, but not mushy. Transfer the cooked cabbage to a colander to drain and set it aside for now. - Once the water with the potatoes is boiling, reduce the heat, and simmer for 10 to 20 minutes until your potatoes are fork tender. - Once the milk has reduced by half, add the vegan butter, the 3/4 tsp salt, and the pepper. Stir until the butter melts, then set aside for now. - When the potato pieces are fork tender, drain them in a colander, then add them back to the pan. Cook for several more minutes to dry them out. Add the dried potatoes pieces to a large mixing bowl, and beat on high speed with a hand mixer until they are smooth and fluffy. - Pour in the reduced milk and onion mixture, then stir them into the beaten potatoes. - Add the cooked cabbage and stir again. Your colcannon is done, but may not be hot enough depending on if your reduced milk and cooked cabbage had cooled down too much. So, if needed, heat your colcannon in the microwave until piping hot. - Serve the traditional way with lots of melted vegan butter and black pepper. Enjoy!
