Mel Cotton Mel Cotton meet the creative

“I feel like every decision I’ve ever made has led to this outcome,” said Mel Cotton, owner and curator of Rose and Eugene Presents.

After working at a non-profit art gallery while studying studio art and art history at South Dakota State University, Mel got a job as a photographer. Leaning into styling and lighting led to marketing, which led to management.

After nearly a decade of buying, selling, and marketing, Mel said she felt ready to make the leap to owning her own gallery.

In April of 2023, Mel and her husband, Les, opened Rose and Eugene Presents in downtown Sioux Falls in The Cascade at Falls Park

The driving force behind Rose and Eugene Presents lies in Mel’s firm belief in the power of art to shape local culture and enhance the community.

“Art is an expansive scope that shapes local culture, bolsters the economy, and fosters a sense of community,” explained Mel. “The sheer variety of styles and perspectives within the art world is nearly infinite.”

Witnessing the untapped potential of local creatives and the limited opportunities available to them, Mel says she knew there was a need for a platform that could rebalance the scale.

Thus, Rose and Eugene was born, with a focus on offering an array of creatives, a stage to display their work, and connecting likeminded individuals whose values align with the gallery’s ethos.

Read more about Sioux Falls’ newest gallery and its owner.

The reason behind the name Rose and Eugene Presents is that…

Rose is my middle name and Eugene is my husband Les’s middle name. Both are family names. It’s both of us and neither of us, and it's kind of fresh and also has a history.

The pieces and products we carry are…

a curated selection that is primarily sourced from the Midwest, Great Plains, and Rocky Mountain regions. This includes a diverse range of items such as art, gifts, jewelry, skincare, and even pet supplies. Most of this goodness is crafted by passionate creatives and dedicated entrepreneurs right here in the Heartland. Rose and Eugene is a place where people can find items that truly express their individuality while supporting their community.

My

day-to-day at work is…

structured, yet fulfilling. One day a week is split between marketing and finances. The rest of the week is all about operations, customer service, and filling my dog Minnie’s snuggle quota. It doesn’t sound glamorous, but serving my customers and being surrounded by inspiring art and music makes every day rewarding. I love it and couldn’t see myself doing anything else.

My favorite place in Sioux Falls is…

after Rose and Eugene, my couch! I’m an ambivert, and love bringing high-vibe energy to my customers and clients. When it’s time to rest, I go hard.

The best part of my job is…

all of it! My customers, artists, and vendors are amazing. We’re a legit community, and have shared values and interests and truly enjoy supporting each other. My space is flooded with natural light, which allows me to bring botanical life into the space. I’m surrounded by inspiring art and music every day. Don’t even get me started about my neighborhood. I have the best neighbors in the most beautiful location.

Minnie Cotton serves as the Director of Barketing & Customer Relations. She’s shy, but loves cuddles!

Staff Spotlight

How I would describe my style is…

artful. Eclectic. Bohemian. Granny-core. Gallery walls, plants, natural wood tones, color, covered tissue boxes.

Someone I admire is…

my ride-or-die, Les Cotton. Dr. Norman Gambill (RIP). Bob Dylan Kimberly Drew Spock . I’m sparked by fiercely independent, wildly unconventional passionate folks, and I admire people who are in a perpetual state of growth. The unstuck. People in motion.

My go-to coffee order is…

black coffee. My morning doesn’t start until The Daily from The Breaks Coffee Roasting Co. starts dripping. When I need a break from the gallery and I’m feeling fancy, I hit up my neighbors at La Luna Café. I’ve never taken the time to get to know specialty coffees, but I do like trying new things. Luna’s team is great at surprising me with caffeinated bangers. I couldn’t name a single beverage they’ve made me, but I’ve loved every one!

The process of how I curate is…

by emphasizing locally made items from surrounding areas while ensuring they aesthetically align with the gallery’s vibe and further display narratives. Most importantly I look for pieces that delight and support creativity, growth, belonging, or self-confidence.

My mission is… to celebrate Midwest creatives in a warm, inclusive space.

Something I want people to know about Rose and Eugene Presents is that…

we’re family owned and operated. We have all kinds of out-of-towners that wonder if Rose and Eugene is a franchise. It isn’t. We’re one little shop. I curate goods and handle the day-to-day, Mr. Cotton is in charge of all things brand-related in addition to being an expert gopher, and Minnie is our director of “barketing” and customer relations. THE LODGE AT DEADWOOD

Luxury Redefined

Nestled at the north end of Deadwood, The Lodge at Deadwood has become a sought out destination for those exploring the Black Hills.

The resort recently undertook renovations to create a new era for the lodge with the recent addition of the Executive Suite

“Our Executive Suite provides a little bit of luxury right in the heart of the Black Hills,” said Patrick Sanders, director of sales and marketing.

The expansion stemmed from frequent full occupancy, says Sanders, but with the addition of 44 rooms and the Executive Suite, future and returning guests can experience the unique amenities the lodge has to offer.

“It gives an extra amenity and experience to offer people who’re wanting to take in the Black Hills for the first or fiftieth time,” shared Sanders. “It’s unique to the area and isn’t found anywhere else.”

The long-awaited Executive Suite exudes a blend of sophistication, contemporary elegance, and subtle hints of rustic charm.

The color palette draws inspiration from the surrounding landscape, with earthy tones, light wood finishes, and gold accents.

Stretching over 2,000 square feet and two stories is a spacious living room, glass fireplace, master bedroom featuring a king size bed paired with a spa style bathroom, with a large soaking tub, walk-in shower, and an in-house kitchen.

Floor-to-ceiling windows encompass the main floor featuring a 300-degree panoramic view of Deadwood.

“The deck is also a show-stopper," added Sanders.

The expansive private deck opens up to a full view of Deadwood Park and is equipped with a fireplace and an outdoor television.

“It’s the perfect spot for gathering with friends and family, having a fire, or sipping cocktails,” said Sanders. “It’s overall a beautiful experience.”

“Our renovation consisted of taking off the existing wing the suite is in

and expanding straight out. We

didn’t want to disrupt our day-to-

day operations, so throughout the

entire construction process we

were still able to rent out rooms.”

According to Sanders, the Executive Suite is suitable for anything and everything. The Lodge at Deadwood as a whole welcomes anybody to enjoy the suite, from couples celebrating a wedding anniversary, to companies hosting a board mixer, to a bachelor party.

“It’s extremely dynamic in what it can host,” stated Sanders.

Other room options include standard double queens, queen deluxes, suites, standard king, and walk-out king rooms.

“The walk-out king rooms are also very unique to the Deadwood area,” said Sanders. “With those rooms, you’re able to pull your car right outside and have an outdoor entrance directly into your room.”

“This is a special development because there’s a variety of styles of lots, such as walk-outs, gardens, and flat slab on grade homes,” said Danielle. “That style of home has become popular for us, so we’ve had the opportunity to continue building those.”

The Thompson Place Twin Homes at Nine Mile will feature 20 beachfront lots and 22 additional lots featuring a concrete wall between them, ensuring ultimate privacy.

The two-story floor spans over 2,3000 square feet and offers elevated and spacious living space with three bedrooms, office space, and a lofted area. The floor plan provides a balance between open gathering areas and private spaces.

NICHOLS PAINTING CO.

Founded with a commitment to their trade, their city, and their clients, Nichols Painting Co. serves the city of Sioux Falls with high-quality custom painting services.

Owners Andrea and Sam Nichols hold strong backgrounds in different art mediums, and the husband and wife believe their degrees and experience have instilled a passion for design, color, and the quality of work.

When the pair met, they say they practically fell in love with paint brushes in their hands. Along with Andrea’s younger years growing up painting with her dad, the two gained valuable experience working at a large painting company, which led to their business endeavor today.

“Painting has been a part of our entire relationship,” shared Andrea.

As the Nichols were developing into their painting careers after college, Sam started to take hold of a passion for working in the housing industry.

“I started to get a love for learning a skill and a trade, while finding a tangible way to serve the community,” said Sam.

The young couple had fallen in love with the city of Sioux Falls, interacting with numerous communities, and residents who hold a unique pride in the city. Sam and Andrea thought providing their talents would be a new way to serve the area.

THE HOME & DESIGN ISSUE september 2023

In 2020, the couple began their residential painting company. Over the past few years, Nichols Painting Co. has embarked on a journey of unwavering commitment to excellence.

“With our own business we could control more and be able to hone in on certain types of painting and quality of work,” explained Sam. “We’ve been able to slow things down and go from high production to high service.”

Nichols Painting Co. provides interior, exterior, cabinetry, trim, and front door painting services, as well as unique finishes such as limewashing and whitewashing.

“We love incorporating artistic finishes into our work. It really sets us apart from the average paint job of just a color change,” said Andrea.

With 20-plus years of experience combined, The Nichols are ready to help take their clients' homes to new heights of creativity and quality.

“Serving people in their homes is more personal,” said Andrea. “You’re in their space, especially on larger projects, and you’re a part of their daily lives. That's something Sam and I both love."

She continued, “Some paint jobs require a higher level of skill and prep work in order to achieve the final product. Our services take on that higher level of quality and are long-term. It’s what we want to be known and hired for.”

Over the years, the couple have painted a wide variety of homes, different architectural styles, and have gotten to know the different areas of the town.

As Andrea and Sam have grown, they say they have grown fonder of historic homes around town, particularly in McKennan Park.

“We’ve done so many homes all over the area, but we really love those neighborhoods with older established homes,” stated Andrea. “Every house is so different and holds its own charm and history.”

She adds that those homes hold an immense amount of character, and to be a part of updating and preserving the history the home holds is special.

This fall, Andrea & Sam are working to offer weekend classes to teach DIYers how to paint their cabinetry themselves with the use of professional finishes & products.

“My favorite project of mine was with a young family in the McKennan Park area. They had us paint the interior, including all the trim, cabinetry, walls, ceilings, and the whole exterior of their home. We were able to leave an impact on the house as a whole and update this hundred year home. It’s always satisfying to see those spaces after we’ve done our work there.”

“My favorite project was this past winter when we worked on a remodel with a local builder whose clients are bold with their decisions. It was a stunning remodel of the master bedroom, bathroom, and living space. They chose a ton of fun, bright, and bold colors that spoke to them and really brought personality and energy to their space.”

“We love to create a space, curate a room, or a surface that elicits an emotional response,” said Sam. “Painting is visual and accessible. Transforming a space can be great, but improving the quality of the painted finishes by going beyond a client’s expectations is incredibly rewarding.”

FISHER & CO. REAL ESTATE

At the heart of Fisher & Co. Real Estate are two bold sisters who bring their unique strengths to the table, forming a partnership that blends experience and knowledge.

With over 30 years in real estate combined, Danielle Konechne and Dana Fisher have crafted a narrative of success that reflects their dedication to serving their clients.

Previously known as Fisher Sisters Real Estate, the siblings wanted to reflect their mission of enhancing the lives of their clients into a new brand.

“Our main goal was to improve the quality and status of our brand, matching the mission of our company,” said Fisher. “We aimed for it to be clean,

stately, aesthetically pleasing, and overall elevated. I think we’ve been able to achieve that.”

With the help of their director of operations, Jenny McMillen, the real estate company was able to take on their new persona.

“My strengths are organizing and checklists, so once I had our foundation I went to work with the building blocks,” said McMillen. “It was a lot of work, but very rewarding to see the final results.”

Fisher added, “She was able to take our ideas and put them into motion. We were able to use our own talent that’s local and in-house. Jenny is the backbone of our business.”

For Fisher and Konechne, buying or selling a home or property is more than just a transaction; it’s a life-changing experience for their clients.

This philosophy drives the pair to go the extra mile to understand their clients' distinct needs, preferences, and aspirations, allowing them to calm clients' nerves.

“When buyers and sellers meet with us, we discuss the challenges and benefits and help advise them,” shared Fisher. “We build a level of trust with expertise and strong skill sets and I think that puts our clients at ease.”

“We’re a full spectrum-type of company,” said Konechne. “Whether our clients need contractors, help with movers, affiliates to come touch up details before listing a house, or a staging service. There are just many moving parts to everybody’s real estate needs.”

Fisher continued, “We often work with clients who want an advisor and someone to care for them and a high level of service.”

Every interaction is marked by professionalism, dedication, and a comprehensive understanding of the unique demands of the real estate market.

“Danielle and I know exactly how many homes or properties are on the market, how many are pending, what the average days on the market are, what price range is selling quickly, and what changes are taking place in Sioux Falls,” said Fisher.

“Every transaction is different, and there are many moving parts. Sometimes it can be challenging, but it’s worth it.”

VISIONS

EYE CARE

92 | 605MAGAZINE.COM

605 STOPS BY

Even as a high school student, Dr. Angela Gulbranson knew she wanted to work in the medical field. After shadowing some professionals on the job, she began to nurture a love for pediatrics.

More job shadowing brought her to a field of work she truly loved: optometry.

After completing optometry school at Indiana University, Gulbranson moved back to Sioux Falls

and opened Visions Eye Care + Therapy Center in 2004 on 69th Street.

In 2018, the company moved down the road and opened the doors on a new facility.

The clinic performs routine primary vision care for all ages, but Gulbranson’s early passion for pediatrics carried over into her practice, and the clinic specializes in pediatric vision care.

“We work with little kiddos that are having trouble reading, to concussion patients or stroke patients,” said Gulbranson.

THE HO ME & DESIGN ISSUE september 2023

Though Visions was started by Gulbranson, the business is a team effort. Dr. Jennifer Hupke and Dr. Ashley Gentrup share ownership of the company with Gulbranson, and optometrist Dr. Christian DeJongh has recently joined the team.

For the last 20 years, Gulbranson and her partners have been developing a curriculum of care that goes beyond primary vision care: Vision Therapy.

“Vision Therapy is a rehab program to help retrain the brain on how to use the eyes more efficiently,” said Gentrup.

Patients who benefit from Vision Therapy might be those who have learning-related vision issues, uncoordinated vision, developmental delays, or those who have endured a concussion. The process is similar to physical therapy or rehab.

“Therapy students of all ages visit our office weekly to build important visual skills for daily life,” explained Gentrup. “We help with headaches, double vision, loss of place with reading and blurry vision. Vision therapy enhances reading, sports performance, and visual comfort when looking at all distances." she said.

The clinic works with all kinds of disciplines and developmental delays, like down syndrome and autism. The doctors study the connection between vision and learning, treating patients in ways that will help them succeed.

“Everybody is special, and each program is individualized to what they need,” said Hupke.

In the Vision Therapy process, the patients undergo an evaluation that helps the therapists design their treatment program and work with them on a weekly basis.

“I feel like it’s evolving all the time,” Hupke expressed. Despite the challenges, Gulbranson expressed that it’s very gratifying to walk with a child through their specific issues and watch the therapy process change their life.

“People’s success stories are why I started doing it,” she stated. Though the clinic’s staff is small, Hupke says the doctors all share a love for kids and helping others, all while maintaining close working relationships with each other and with the people they serve.

SAY HELLO TO DR. DEJONGH

We’re proud to announce the addition of Dr. DeJongh to our growing team. Dr. DeJongh received his Doctor of Optometry degree from Pacific University College of Optometry and specializes in the treatment of ocular and dry eye disease. Dr. DeJongh is now accepting appointments.

“Making sure the patient has a good experience from when they call for the exam, to the follow through on any services they might need, is essential,” she said.

The clinic also has its own in-house shop called the Optical Boutique, which contains specialty lenses, unique frames, and high quality brands.

From exams to therapy programs to the boutique, the doctors prioritize thoroughly caring for their patients.

“Meeting and working with people to make whatever they need better, even if it’s just a pair of glasses or contacts, is what we love to do,” said Gulbranson.

“Helping people each day is the most rewarding thing.”
Angela Gulbranson
THE HOME & DESIGN ISSUE september 2023

“Since 1941, Black Hills Federal Credit Union has been dedicated to providing the great success and excellent products you and your family need to succeed,” said Amber Zandstra, mortgage originator with BHFCU serving Rapid City and Spearfish.

For over 82 years, the credit union has helped members purchase vehicles, move into homes, insure assets, start businesses, retire comfortably, and more.

“Black Hills Federal Credit Union has products and services made to fit our members’ unique needs,” said Zandstra.

In the past nine years, Zandstra has helped members accomplish their home mortgage goals, ranging from purchasing a new home, refinancing to consolidate debt, to obtaining equity for home improvements.

“I love being able to help members with one of the largest purchases of their lives—their homes,” shared Zandstra. “I enjoy meeting and building friendships with our members. I couldn’t ask for a better career.”

Zandstra shares more about BHFCU's loan offers, the mortgage loan application process, and tips for first-time homebuyers.

What interested you in becoming a mortgage lender?

My mom worked for a credit union while I was growing up, so I was able to witness everyone she helped firsthand. I knew when I got older, I wanted to do something similar; I wanted to help people and make a difference in their lives. I went to college and graduated with a degree in business and immediately began working in the financial industry.

What type of mortgage loans does BHFCU offer?

At BHFCU, we offer secondary market lending and “in-house” lending. We offer conventional financing, government financing, and partner with the South Dakota Housing Association for the First Time Homebuyers program. Some of our unique products include conventional financing up to 100% LTV, single-close construction loans up to 100% LTV, land loans, and renovation loans.

What advice would you give first-time home buyers?

My best advice is to make sure you’re ready. A mortgage is a commitment, and you must be comfortable taking on the commitment a mortgage holds. Then I recommend setting up an appointment for an in-person pre-qualification. That way the entire process can be discussed from start to finish.

Where are your favorite local places to eat?

Spearfish has a lot to offer! I love Killian’s Food & Drink , Sawyer Brewing Co., Barbacoa's, Guadalajara Mexican Restaurant and Bar, Nonna’s Kitchen, and Steerfish Steak and Smoke. When I’m out and about in Deadwood, I love grabbing a bite at either FLYT Steakhouse or Legends Steakhouse

What can customers expect when working with you & BHFCU? Homeowners and future homeowners can expect that I’m committed to listening to their needs and utilizing my 12-plus years of mortgage knowledge to ensure a successful and clean mortgage loan transaction. I believe every member deserves the best care and service when purchasing or refinancing the home of their dreams.
