S: What are the cultural differences you noticed between Saudi Arabia and Finland?

N: Group work, cooperative learning, digital learning, critical and deep thinking. I will teach my students how to be more motivated to want to be independent and show them skills to get the information instead of feeding them information.

N: Segregation in education and most work forces. Transportation. No public transportation in my city, there’s a lot of cars though and traffic jams. Emphasis on respect for teachers. In Saudi Arabia students sometimes are not motivated so they only come to school to pass.

Y: Teachers in Saudi Arabia are killing themselves in the classroom, and this is wrong. We give so much effort in just explaining, doing and acting. And at the end of the day we’re almost dead. What I’ve seen here that I like is having the student take care of his own responsibilities and carry his own learning. I will take this approach of independent studying.

Y: A lot of people seem to think Saudis are rich, ….. no taxes.. but they will be applying taxes and they already have VAT.

In Saudi Arabia smart phones are not allowed in schools, but this is about to change soon. We like this as teachers because I want to teach my students how to research and they have little access to the internet- freedom of receiving information outside of the classroom and in textbooks. It’s something we see here, students in their free time with their laptops just studying in isolation, which is great. N: Also after school, they still stay, just to study because they are motivated.

M: Final question, how would you sum up Finland in 3 words?

Y: No, only for joining universities. However, for schools, they’re free of admissions tests and follow the same format for all local schools. However, if you're VERY VERY gifted then there are special schools for these pupils.

Y: Hmm...great, promising, little cold. N: In school ; inspiring, progressive, successful. S: Why little cold?

S: Can you describe the attendance and school days in your schools?

Y: Because I love the cold, cause it’s too hot in Saudi Arabia!

Y: If a student skips more than five lessons, their parents are warned. If more, let’s say fifteen days, then the student is suspended or kicked out of the course. Secondary school days last from 7.30-14.00.

S M: Thank you for your time and participation. Y N: No, thank you for the hospitality.

N: In contrast to Etelä-Tapiola, morning assemblies are held everyday for about 15 mins in our schools. S: Is there anything you want to ask us or is there something we haven’t asked? Y: I want to say this, I appreciate your interest and your effort here with us and what we’ve seen in the classrooms with your classmates. We understand now why the education in Finland is so strong, because it relies on students like you, who are motivated. You’re good examples of students who have the values and standards set by the Finnish school system and you’re representing the good future for your families and the

“WE PUT SO MUCH MORE EMPHASIS ON CAS HERE. WE USUALLY ACTUALLY DO DOUBLE THE REQUIRED 150 HOURS, AND THEREFORE HAVE LESS FOCUS ON ACADEMICS.” - JOEL HELLEN

The view from Elias’s room

IB LIFE ABROAD Elias Tenhula and Joel Hellen are both 18 years old and currently doing their final year of IB abroad, in England and India respectively. Both completed their Pre-DP year at Etis, so we asked them to compare and contrast their experiences in Finland and abroad. What school do you go to? E: Bradfield College, England J: UWC Mahindra College, India What are the similarities and differences between Etis IB and your IB? E: The main similarity is that both schools have the same basic IB structure. What the schools offer is where they differ. Bradfield has more variety in subjects offered. We have subjects like Economics, Psychology, ESS ( Environmental Systems and Societies), History of Art, Geography, Chinese and Spanish in addition to the subjects offered in Etis. The only subject Etis has and we don’t is Business Management. J: The similarity between these schools is the IB diploma programme. For differences, I think !13

we put so much more emphasis on CAS here. We usually actually do double the required 150 hours, and therefore have less focus on academics, we don’t really even have the minimum required amount of classroom hours. We instead do a lot of independent work and see high success, our average points last year were 36.9. The teaching we do get is very high standard, though. Most of our teachers aren’t actually teachers, but instead specialists in their subject. For example, our biology teacher is not an actual teacher, but instead a biologist who happens to be teaching at our school.

What are the days/schedule like? E: There are two different timetables we go by. During the summer timetable we

attend school Monday thru Saturday. Mondays, Students older than 16 will be given their own Wednesdays and Fridays we start at 8.30 and end room. That being said, I have my own room. I don’t 16.10. Tuesdays and Thursdays we start 8.30 and have my own bathroom though, just a sink. On the end 12.40. Saturdays we start 8.30 and end 11.55. plus side, I do have really good views from my Tuesdays before classes we attend church and room! spend a lot of it with my friends, we like to cook. On the weekends, on Saturdays there are no planned activities, and then Sundays I have some CAS hours.

J: I wanted to go to a truly international school, which definitely came true considering our school has people of over 69 different nationalities. It was a no brainer to go there. The pros of boarding school are that you get to live with your friends and you become so much Why did you decide to go to boarding school? Pros/cons? And why specifically IB again? How did closer with them than you otherwise would. You you decide on your school specifically? also get much more support academically since you live with your teachers - if it’s 8:30PM and you’re E: I decided to go to boarding school because I struggling with homework you can just go to your wanted to go to school in England, and I knew a teacher and ask for help. The cons are that you boarding school would have great opportunities to can’t do whatever you want whenever you want, study, get to know people and experience new such as going to a restaurant for a nice meal or things. I also knew attending a school like this would getting coffee with your friends, as well as the fact help me get into my dream university. I would say that you are always surrounded by people and the pros easily outweigh the cons in my school. The there is a lack of privacy. pros include great opportunities to meet new The reason I decided to do an IB boarding school people, a variety of is because boarding options for schools in the US are “THE PROS EASILY extracurriculars, no need very heavy on academic to wake up early since I and I wanted to do a lot OUTWEIGH THE CONS — I live in school, all inclusive of service and DON’T NEED TO WAKE UP treatment, learning the extracurricular activities, language, having a pub EARLY SINCE I LIVE IN and British A-level on campus, different schools don’t really offer SCHOOL.” kinds of traditions and scholarships… -ELIAS TENHULA excellent food. I ended up choosing Bradfield and England in Since 8th grade I’ve known that I want to study in general because my cousins live there. We asked England, so I had been prepping for a possible my cousins principal about good schools for me transition since then. Altogether, to get in to and he pointed towards Bradfield. After that the official application process began. !15

The process consisted of an application where I had to explain why I wanted to come to Bradfield,

Environmental Systems and Societies, and Finnish Language and Literature which I did as a self taught subject. Future plans? E: My future plans include army next year and then studying law in a university in the UK. I hope to attend Oxford or King’s College London. J: I’m planning on pursuing a liberal arts education in the United States. Right now I’m aiming for Connecticut College, Trinity College, and Pittsburgh College. IA’s, EE and CAS? E: My favourite IA was in economics. My topic was “Is the consumption of e-cigarettes more likely to lead to a negative or a positive externality of consumption?” My least favourite IA was in ESS. For that one my topic was “How does the abundance of pepper dulse change on an exposed and a sheltered beach, and how will this change due to global warming?” For my EE I chose to write about history. My topic for that was “To what extent is Lorenzo de’ Medici deserving of the title ‘The Magnificent’? For CAS, finding activities to do wasn’t particularly hard. The interviews were the hardest part of the process, waiting lists are triple figured, so you really had to make an impression. I don’t think I’ve ever had think that hard for anything. J: Getting in is relatively hard. You first submit an application which includes a personal essay and recommendations. After that, out of the hundreds of applicants they invite around 25 people to interviews. That means a day of interviews and discussions both in English and Finnish, and then they choose 12 who get in. What do you study? E: I study History, English Lit and Economics as higher level subjects and French, ESS and Math Studies as standard level. J: At higher level I do English Language & Literature, Global Politics, and History of Asia and Oceania, and at standard level I do Math Studies,

J: I did my EE in history, and my research question was “To what extent was Soviet influence significant in the Finnish presidential election of 1962?”. For IAs, my Global Politics IA was an engagement activity and I did that on the role of nongovernmental organizations in human rights education in Finland. My ESS IA is on particulate matter and its effect on the human body, and my history IA is on a UN border commission after the partition of India. So at MUWCI we call our CAS “triveni” which comes from the local language and means when three things come together. There’s so many things you can do; for creativity and action we have things like football, drawing, book club. Service activities are very important at my school. You can tutor a staff member (i.e. help a cook learn English), you can do social entrepreneurship projects where you help small business startups with marketing etc, you can organize events and raise funds for different causes, teach people how to swim.

REVIE WS:

ALADDIN

was “surprisingly” enough the Genie. The actor of Genie had a great attitude and threw himself out there, cracking all the jokes like there was no tomorrow and making the audience laugh so hard their lungs started hurting. Every scene the Genie performed in was full of color and excitement and his performance captured the whole audience with no exception.

Aladdin (written by Chad Beguelin, 2011) is a colorful musical full of glitter and gold. The viewer is taken through a well-known Disney story as the poor street rat Aladdin falls in love with Yasmine, who also happens to be the sultan’s daughter. Fortunately enough for Aladdin, he is tricked into a magical cave where he meets Genie, a powerful spirit, who grants him three wishes. Knowing the limit of his wishes, Aladdin starts planning on how he could win the princess’s heart over.

It was amazing to just sit there and listen to all of the songs from my childhood being sung by these amazing singers. The storyline was brought to life stronger than ever and the viewer could leave the theater with a smile on their face. If Aladdin should be criticized, I would have to point out that the ending seems a bit hurried. The first half of the musical was so captivating it out shadows the second half which is a pity.

What should be mentioned about Aladdin is that it is not a musical meant for kids only. Anyone with an open mind can enjoy it fully to their heart’s content and laugh so hard their muscles hurt afterwards. Aladdin’s comedy is honestly one of the greatest I’ve seen in theaters so far and it does take the viewer by surprise as the Disney classic has been so radically spiced up. References to new jokes and popular memes are present and the performers make it so natural one starts looking for the references from the original storyline too.

If you are even the tiniest bit interested in joining this cheerful journey from your childhood, you really should! Aladdin has something for everyone and makes you fall in love with all of the characters, regardless of how evil they are.

STRANGER THINGS 2 The much-awaited sequel of the blockbuster hit series, Stranger Things 2 failed to disappoint. With its usual homage to the 80s, the sophomore season delve into the horror genre as much as it does with science fiction. It did not disappoint fans, as it resolved some leftover conflicts from the first season and ultimately surprised the viewers, especially on the dynamics between characters. The great thing about this season was that even though it tackled more serious themes such that of possession and abuse, it gave us more insight into most of the characters. The show did that by pairing off a character with another and giving it its own subplot. ElevenHopper, Mike-Will, Max-Lucas, and definitely the most talked about and meme-worthy, Dustin-Steve. This adorable duo latched onto viewers hearts as these characters found comfort and support in each other when they seemed to be left in the corner when all their companions were preoccupied with other matters. The introduction of new characters changed the dynamics of the plot as they were essential in creating new conflicts. If Millie Bobby Brown was the breakout star of the first season, it was Noah Schnapp who unquestionably blew everyone away with his acting skills in the second season. While every actor did their utmost best in portraying their characters, it was Noah who stood out the most. His character, Will, dealt with a much larger force this season which turned him from being sweet and sensitive to a possessed exasperated boy. Being just twelve years of age when they shot his scenes, proves that he is a force to be reckoned with.

KINGSMAN: THE GOLDEN CIRCLE (2017) Director: Matthew Vaughn

Cast: Taron Egerton, Colin Firth, Julianne Moore, Mark Strong, Channing Tatum Action/Adventure/Comedy Synopsis: After the Kingsman headquarters in London blow up, Gary ”Eggsy” Unwin (Taron Egerton) and Merlin (Mark Strong) follow the doomsday protocol which leads them to the Statesman, another secret spying organization, in Kentucky. After a huge revelation, Eggsy and Merlin work together with the Statesman to take down Poppy, the leader of the biggest drug cartel in the world. A deathly blue rash caused by drugs is spreading all over the world and the Kingsman only have a limited amount of time to get the antidote from Poppy. Review: Kingsman: The Golden Circle, offers action, comedy and welldressed Brits all in one film. It´s the second film of the Kingsman series, all based on comic-books. Since the movie is a sequel to Kingsman: The Secret Service, it is left to compete with the quality of the first installment. The sequel was definitely more focused on the comedic aspect of the story and took it overboard. Very predictably the movie was filled with fighting, but even the fights were overly laughable and executed in a comical way. The full-on destruction got tedious from time to time.

The agony of waiting for Mike and Eleven’s reunion was excruciatingly slow. This was the most anticipated scene this season, as die-hard fans of the first season had to deal with the depressing effects of the characters’ separation on each character. It was a bit disappointing that they had to wait that long to meet each other again, but their reunion scene and the Snowball ultimately makes up for it.

The film brings some fascinating characters to life, like a menacing drug cartel leader who makes hamburgers from human meat and a president ready to commit genocide on the drug users suffering from the blue rash. Along great actors, also a great musician is featured, as Elton John is trapped in ”Poppy Land” performing for non-other than Poppy.

Overall, this season was arguably better than the first. It explored more on character development while also building up the much-needed suspense for the appalling influence of the upside down once again. As season three was just recently confirmed and is in the works of being written, all we could hope for now is that the succeeding season will be as brilliant if not more.

The movie contains a bit too much of everything and didn’t match the level of its predecessor. Even though it occasionally felt a bit drawn out, the action-packed movie was entertaining. A sequel is in the working that I would like to see and there is even talk of a Statesman spinoff.

"So indecisive I can't even figure out if Ross and Rachel were on a break."

IB à la carte WICKED Wicked (written by Stephen Schwartz, 2003) starts from a celebration: the wicked witch of the West has finally died! As the singing crowd circles one of our protagonists, well-liked Glinda, to party the victory over evil, she soon reveals that the truth the crowd has heard of the wicked witch might not be the whole truth. As the shaken crowd demand for an explanation, Glinda shares the hidden story of the wicked witch of the West, also known as Elphaba. I had been waiting for Wicked for such a long time and when I was finally able to have the experience of seeing it performed in the Victoria Apollo Theater in London, I was bewildered. My expectations were higher than the clouds and I was really looking forward to the musical; lucky for me, Wicked didn’t let me down. The storyline starts off really slowly, which was a bit numbing at times since the viewer would like to get to the juicy part of the story right away. The slow start is understandable though as there is a lot of the story to be covered before the plot can be clearly understood. It was good that the musical took its time and didn’t rush to the end since that could have easily ruined the whole musical in a matter of minutes. Besides, the slow start was easily compensated with one of the greatest endings I have ever seen. Wicked takes the viewer in an emotional rollercoaster where one finds oneself smiling, laughing and crying – possibly even at the same time. The songs are catchy and will end up playing in your head for the rest of the day which I consider a positive; this is a musical after all. All of the performers did a great job singing and dancing and really got into their roles and showed real emotions that the viewer could relate to. In just a couple hours the viewer finds themselves keen on every single one of the characters and in the end it is clearly hard to find personalities that are too ugly to follow. Every character has their flaws and even if they annoy one from time to time, even the most selfish characters will stay in one’s heart. I would recommend Wicked for everyone, whether or not musicals are your type of entertainment. It is a classic which everyone should become familiar with and its popularity can be easily understood as one sees the musical. It is an experience of a lifetime with beautiful voices and characters and shows how every story has two sides – even the wicked ones. Nita Savolainen

SPICY GLÖGI CHEESECAKE Ingredients:

Preparation:

Cake base:

Crush the gingerbread. Melt the butter and combine with the gingerbread crumbs. Attach the parchment paper to the springform pan (24cm) between the bottom and the edges. Press the gingerbread crumb to the bottom of the pan into a smooth layer. Put the pan in the fridge.

150 g gingerbreads 75g butter Filling:

Sink the gelatin leaves into cold water and let them soak for 10 minutes. Whip the cream. Combine the icing sugar, spices, and zest with the cream cheese. Gently mix the whipped cream into the cream cheese mixture. Heat the orange juice and dissolve the well squeezed out gelatin in the juice. Let the gelatin mix slightly cool and pour it into the cream cheese filling while mixing. Spread the filling onto the gingerbread base and let the cake set in the fridge for a minimum of 4 hours.

4 gelatine leaves 2dl whipped cream 180 g natural cream cheese 1dl icing sugar ½ tsp cinnamon ½ tsp cardamom 1 grated orange zest 3tbsp orange juice

Soak the gelatin for about 10 minutes in cold water. Bring the water to a boil in a saucepan. Dissolve the well squeezed-out gelatins into the water. Pour the gelatin mix in with the mulled wine in a thin stirp while stirring. Let the mixture cool down for a moment in the fridge while occasionally stirring. The mixture needs to be as cooled down as possible, but not set before adding it on top of the cake. (If the glaze starts to set, gently heat it so that it turns runny again.) Carefully add the glaze on the cake, so that the cheese filling doesn't get mixed. Set the cake in the fridge for at least 4 hours, preferably overnight. Garnish the cake with cinnamon sticks.

Glaze: 4 gelatine leaves 1dl water 3dl Glögi concentrate Garnish: Cinnamon sticks

SPRING IS COMING - AND SO IS THE EE ARTICLE BY NITA SAVOLAINEN The extended essay is probably one of the most talked about aspects of the IB, as every graduating IB student has to have written their 4000 word essay about their chosen topic. My EE journey is about to come to its end, as the only part of the process I am yet to face is the final interview with my supervisor. Because of this I wanted to construct a recap of the whole process to guide and encourage those who are yet to start working on their EE and perhaps for those who are just curious about the concept in general.

opposite – I even found many parts of the process enjoyable.

TIPS AND TRICKS FOR EVERY STEP ON YOUR WAY TO SUCCESS

1. The beginning… - During the spring before the EE summer, you’ll be informed of the timetable of your decision making and how you should go about choosing your subject. Your EE subject is preferably an HL subject, and you need to ask from your EE subject teacher if they would like to supervise you (everyone needs a supervisor so yes, you need to start thinking about this). But keep in mind that there is a limited amount of students (approximately five) one teacher can take under their wing so be quick to ask for your supervisor so your options aren’t limited any further! - To add to the Hunger games of getting a supervisor, it is much more likely that your teacher will say yes to your request of them supervising you, than turning you down (unless they already have the maximum of students to supervise, that is). So be brave

Now, I know that starting a 4000 word essay sounds like a rather depressive/stressful task to many. And I am not going to lie, due to my own mistakes and planning problems, I myself faced a couple instances where having a Britney Spears breakdown and shaving my head sounded like the only possible option (adding to this, my hair is still doing good and attached to my scalp). Maybe this is the very reason I feel like writing this article is important: there is no better way to learn than from the mistakes of others. In the end the extended essay is not the next level of torture – quite the !25

and go ask, since you need to do it at some point anyway!

3. The second meeting - After some time (a couple of weeks or so), you’ll sit down with your supervisor again. This interview will be the last one before the summer and thus I cannot highlight enough how important it is for you to listen and ask questions when you still can. - The second interview is very much like the first one, except this time you have done some more research on your sources and methodology and should have your exact topic in mind. - Your supervisor is likely to discuss the possible pitfalls of your investigation, as well as ask about your plan of writing your paper.

2. The first meeting - Let’s say you got a green light from the supervisor of your dreams. The step that comes now is crucial. If you have not thought of a question yet, you should start brainstorming on that ASAP. Before you go to the first meeting, it is likely that you are asked to turn in a format that has three possible EE topics you would like to take on. When going to your first interview with your supervisor, make sure that you have an idea of which question you would like to do the most (as the two other questions are merely backups in the case of 4.Writing the EE your dream -Now, I know that just topic being thinking about starting unsuitable for your EE may sound like the EE). a rather daunting task - During the first but it has to be done in meeting with order to graduate! The your supervisor key strategy of your you will discuss extended essay is to your possible start EARLY so you’ll topic and your - NITA SAVOLAINEN be able to meet the supervisor will deadlines with no give you ideas problems. No matter of how to narrow it down (if needed). The which subject you picked as your EE subject, supervisor wants to know more about the starting early will reduce your stress later topic of your choice, how you think of going and will give you more time to prevent about it and so forth, so it is advisable to dumb mistakes and solve problems, big or ACTUALLY give this a thought before small. walking into the interview. But what you should also to impress your supervisor by knowing what consider is that your supervisor is an you want to do, it will certainly look fantastic individual who also is on a holiday, thus they in the eyes of the IB! are not going to sit in front of the computer - Your supervisor is likely to give you tasks to waiting for you to send them a message. The last aspect of working on the essay during summer is to make sure that you work but also have free time. While you should be working on the essay almost weekly, you can spare yourself days from here and there where you just chill around and enjoy summer. To make sure you still succeed with getting your time managing right, creating a specific timetable is going to be more than helpful!

-

5. The first draft - This is the moment the summer of your EE has been preparing you for. As there is not too much to say about the first draft as an occasion itself, I have created you a checklist to go through while preparing for your first draft submission: A) ALWAYS make sure you know the criteria. The EE book is a great help so make sure to use it. If not read it entirely, make sure you are familiar with the criteria and tips and pitfalls of your subject of choice!

After reading and having the time to comment on your work, you will meet your supervisor again and they will give their comments to you. During this meeting it is best for you to make sure that you understand all of their comments on your work. If you miss some point they are trying to convey, ask immediately. This commenting session is priceless which means you should take it seriously if you are aiming for the higher marks on your EE. Thus pay attention to every single point your supervisor brings up. You do not have to agree on everything they want to correct but it is advisable to give their word some worth as they know what the IB is looking for with the EE meanwhile you are merely a student who is just about to begin learning about the IB ways.

7. The final draft - Imagining that you have not completely failed to follow the steps above, you should be able to see the light at the end of the tunnel by now. There is no need to emphasize how crucial it is for you to actually focus on your final draft: naturally after you have returned your final EE, you won’t be able to change a thing. Thus start working on your EE again almost immediately after getting your first draft back. Trust me, the time available might seem like a lot but before you notice it, you are running out of minutes to spend with your extended essay. - It is highly possible that you got a variety of comments from your supervisor on your first draft. Still, if you have anything to ask, keep in mind that you can ask your supervisor for help at any time. - For heaven’s sake, do NOT miss the deadline this time. The final draft is not any ordinary essay. If you don’t return it on time, you will find yourself in real trouble and trust me: that is not the place you want to end up in.

B) Read your text through multiple times and let a friend or family member read it. You might have skipped some spelling errors or are not being as clear as you think you are being. C) Create your EE for a person who might not be familiar with your topic. This means that you need to stay specific at all times and EXPLAIN your points. Do not take the knowledge of the reader for granted. D) Try to imagine that the first draft is the last draft. By trying to make your first draft look as polished and final as possible you will give more space for your supervisors commentary, thus you’ll benefit more (as your supervisor will be able to give you more detailed comments on your draft).

6. The commentary on your first draft

!27

8. The EE day - Soon after your final draft submission you’ll have to face your EE once again – this time publicly. But don’t worry, the EE day is nothing to fear. You have done so much work on your extended essay that you know more about it than the majority of your audience. It is a great time to show your knowledge to everyone. Let that knowledge shine! - Your supervisor is going to ask you some questions regarding your EE but keep in mind that this is not an exam of any sort. Your supervisor wants to make you look good in the eyes of the audience and tries to give you the opportunity to show off your new skills. Don’t stress too much about what your supervisor might ask, as you will be able to answer everything as long as you just take it easy and don’t panic. Besides, it’s only going to be ten minutes on the stage so it’ll be over before you acknowledge it. - There is not too much to do for the EE day, but it’s advisable to go through your essay one more time before going in front of the class.

-

maybe assess it for yourself. Then when asked for your views on your own work it will be easier for you to elaborate on your essay. Just like the two other formal interviews, you should comment on this interview on Managebac as well! And remember, your comment can get you more points for your EE so doing a precise work will only benefit you!

And that is it! You have now completed your EE in the time span of approximately seven to eight months! It is a huge project to take up on but believe me, after you have gone through it all, you’ll feel so much more confident in your own working abilities. The extended essay is not a task every high school student goes through and learning these new aspects of research and creating a longer work will only benefit you later in life. So when it’s your time to start your EE, keep your mind open and remember that it is all worth it. And most importantly, try to take it as a learning opportunity. The probability of your work being 100% perfect is fairly nonexistent but absolute perfection never was the ultimate goal of the EE. Instead, focus on the aspects of the work that taught you more new things: how to build a clear bibliography, referencing and citing in general, how to build graphs or maybe how to find new viewpoints for analysis. These newly learnt skills might help you later in life which makes the extended essay a beneficial experience. So start your EE with a positive mindset and follow the path it takes you on: the most interesting part is how the path usually takes you somewhere completely different than you initially thought.

9. The third meeting - This is going to be your final interview with your supervisor. During this meeting your supervisor is going to give their feedback on your final draft and talk about their thoughts of how you did in the extended essay. - As preparation for the final interview it is a great idea to go through your work and

Lack of proper sleep can cause the brain to eat itself. When we are asleep, our brain does a lot of housekeeping like removal of the toxic byproducts of neural activity. Studies in mice suggest that persistently poor sleep causes the brain to go overboard with the cleaning, and start to harm itself instead. This destroys healthy neurons and synaptic connections. Recovering sleep might not be able to reverse the damages. Research to verify if the process is replicated in human brains is still required. If so, chronic lack of sleep may put at risk of Alzheimer’s disease and other neurological disorders. Journal of Neuroscience 2017

Genetically modified skin could replace insulin shots for diabetes. Type-2 diabetes is a lifelong condition where the pancreas does not produce enough insulin. Scientists have now genetically altered skin cells that can trigger the production of insulin. They indirectly trigger insulin by controlling the production of a hormone called GLP-1. Scientists have tested the system in mice and found that it increased insulin secretion and reversed high-fat-dietinduced weight gain and insulin resistance. They think the same method could also be used for correction of various other metabolic diseases. Cancer stem cell, 2017

recording took an hour and filming took two hours. There were a lot of abruptions in all phases of production, but this group did not give up and diligently finished the project on time. There were several arguments on the lyrics and the whole piece, chord progression wise. We did not have professional equipment either, meaning that we had to e.g. record the vocals on our phones, default DAW sound presets and samples which do not sound too pleasing to the ear which had to be modified heavily to sound more natural, etc.

Where did the idea come from? Being an IB student, the daily struggles of this tedious program occupies the mind constantly, thus being the main inspiration for our song. Our main intention with this song was to deliver a musical experience depicting the struggles and emotional and mental impacts caused by the program. The lead singer (Jami Suominen), who performed the chorus and bridge of the song, explains the overall struggle in the IB.

What were the reactions like? The video suddenly went viral and gained worldwide attention within a matter of hours. There were a total of 24 likes, two dislikes and three comments in one day. Could you believe it? The feedback was-unexpectedlyoverwhelmingly positive.

Song production: Composing the actual song took one hour, coming up with the lyrics took 15 minutes,
