Hello from a very purple Gauteng – ok, we are not in the Jacaranda city, however Jozi is blooming too. So you can look forward to our usual colourful pages.

OUR “Little Boss” Carmen Che Jardim

This is our 18th Edition, and we are experimenting with the idea of completely splitting Child of the Universe between the Montessori Edition and the Conscious Living edition. In other words, removing everything to do with children, schooling methods and parenting into the Montessori mag.

While every effort has been made to ensure that the contents of this publication are both accurate and truthful, the publisher and editor accept no responsibility for inaccurate or misleading information that may be contained herein.

However, you will still have access to information from both editions, as they will be distributed side-by-side with content details on each cover. We have the lovely, lively Rosie Motene gracing this cover. We interview Rosie with some personal questions. Rosie is an amazing woman… amongst many activities she is very involved with POWA. We have included them as it is a cause that is close to our hearts as well. There is a creative and fun new activity that has finally taken South Africa by storm… people are taking delight in being colourful with various mediums of choice – and colouring in, just like we did as kids. Mandalas are the most popular as this is very therapeutic. It is also relaxing and a form of meditation. See our Hay House hampers that we are giving away further on in the magazine. Lisa is a regular motivator to get your body into shape with eating and exercise programmes. In this edition she takes us outdoors and into the pool. We touch on one type of Epilepsy along with the Ketogenic Diet and a supportive Product. Read about the dog that rescued a human and people, with the festive season upon us, please be vigilant about stray animals and their plight for help. Many of them have been ‘thrown away’ by unfeeling humans who are going on holiday. Time to step out into your gardens and do a Rain Dance, we are all roasting and the Earth is dry. Please keep hydrated and use your sun screen.

Enjoy the world blossoming around you. Until the next edition, happy days!

by Linda Navon The suggestion to invite Rosie to be on our next cover came from Pierre de Villiers – a man with a stream of achievements and experience (too many to mention – Pierre my hun, we will hold that off for another issue.) Much appreciated by the way.

… THIS IS ABOUT ROSIE MOTENE… I started by doing an internet search on Rosie and was overwhelmed by the amount of information that came up. I could have ‘cut-and-pasted till the cows came home’ but I wanted to know what makes Rosie tick. She has done and achieved so much for a woman so young. Fierce as a Tiger yet her heart is as soft as candy floss. If I was ever in trouble this is the woman I would want fighting at my side! ROSIE STRONGLY SUPPORTS POWA – People Opposing Woman Abuse – for which she has her own story.

THESE WERE MY QUESTIONS FOR ROSIE Q: HOW DO YOU FEEL ABOUT BEING IN LOVE? A: When I am in love, which I am not at present, I give the relationship my everything. It’s got to work both ways, mutual trust and respect and a strong basis of friendship. Q; WHAT ARE YOUR VIEWS ON KARMA? A: I absolutely believe in karma, I strive to respect the next person and believe in equality. I also believe that we are connected to our past lives. For some reason I feel a very strong connection to Uganda. Q: SO YOU BELIEVE IN LIFE AFTER DEATH? A: Yes, your body is just an empty vessel without the Soul. Our ancestors from past lives are always with us. Q: WHEN YOU HAVE CHILDREN ONE DAY, WHAT IS THE MOST IMPORTANT QUALITY YOU WOULD LIKE TO INSTILL IN THEM? A: To be fearless. To own their Power! Q: WHAT SHOULD SOUTH AFRICANS WORK ON TO IMPROVE LIVING HERE? A: Everyone should collectively ‘get over themselves. Q; DO YOU HAVE A FAVOURITE SPORT? A: Alas , not rugby. I like soccer and support the Kaizer Chiefs and Manchester United. Q: WHAT FORM OF SPORTS DO YOU PARTICIPATE IN? A: Dancing – tap, modern and jazz.

Q: FAVOURITE MUSIC AND BANDS? A: Lionel Ritchie and Janet Jackson. I enjoy classical music, funk and anything with a beat. I love Q: WHAT IS YOUR ‘OFF-DUTY’ DRESS CODE olives A: Comfortable kaftans and slops LOL Q: WHAT ARE YOUR ‘GUILTY PLEASURES’? A: Eating olives in the kitchen in my undies. I love olives. Q: WHAT IS THE OLDEST ITEM OF CLOTHING IN YOUR WARDROBE? A: A dress that belonged to my Foster Mother. I wore it to my Foster Brother’s Bar Mitzvah Q: SO WERE YOU BROUGHT UP JEWISH? A: Yes, Orthodox although I converted to Progressive Judaism Q: WHAT IS THE BEST PRESENT YOU EVER RECEIVED? A: It was not so much a present as a GIFT. After a funeral of a family member all my friends stayed with me for an extra night. That really meant a lot to me. Throughout our chat on Skype, Rosie didn’t stop smiling – she has the most infectious laugh and is so easy to be comfortable with. Thank you Rosie, for your time and for gracing our magazine with your presence. Much gratitude and love to you.

Her eyes met mine as she walked down the corridor peering apprehensively into the kennels. I felt her need instantly and knew I had to help her. I wagged my tail, not too exuberantly, so she wouldn't be afraid. As she stopped at my kennel I blocked her view from a little accident I had in the back of my cage. I didn't want her to know that I hadn't been walked today. Sometimes the overworked shelter keepers get too busy and I didn't want her to think poorly of them. As she read my kennel card I hoped that she wouldn't feel sad about my past. I only have the future to look forward to and want to make a difference in someone's life. She got down on her knees and made little kissy sounds at me. I shoved my shoulder and side of my head up against the bars to comfort her. Gentle fingertips caressed my neck; she was desperate for companionship. A tear fell down her cheek and I raised my paw to assure her that all would be well. Soon my kennel door opened and her smile was so bright that I instantly jumped into her arms. I would promise to keep her safe. I would promise to always be by her side. I would promise to do everything I could to see that radiant smile and sparkle in her eyes. I was so fortunate that she came down my corridor. So many more are out there who haven't walked the corridors. So many more to be saved. At least I could save one.

Our History

FACTS

Founded in 2006, Operation Smile South Africa (OSSA) joined Operation Smile, Inc. as its 25th partner country. Based in Cape Town, OSSA medical volunteers provide free surgeries to children and adults throughout Southern and Central Africa, as well as educational and training opportunities that promote sustainability and selfsufficiency throughout the region.

•Every 3 minutes, a child somewhere in the world is born with a cleft lip and cleft palate, and are often unable to eat, speak, socialize or smile. •One in 10 of children born with a cleft will die before their first birthday. •Approximately one in every 1000 babies in Africa is born with a cleft lip or cleft palate. •Children with facial deformities who do not receive reconstructive surgery often have difficulty breathing, drinking, eating and speaking. As a result, many suffer from malnutrition, medical and psychological problems. •Many children with untreated cleft lips and cleft palates develop permanent and significant hearing loss. •A cleft lip or cleft palate operation and follow up care costs approximately R5500. •In as little as 45 minutes, one cleft lip surgery can change a child's life forever.

•Operation Smile South Africa (OSSA) has treated more than 4 000 children since 2006. •Since 1982, more than 200 000 children and young adults have been treated by thousands of Operation Smile volunteers worldwide and thousands of healthcare professionals have been trained globally. http://southafrica.operationsmile.org/

What every grandparent needs to know

Time sharing your grandkids

Would you know how to respond, for example, if your grandchild asked where babies come from? Most of us have found ourselves in at least one of the following situations.

Are the “other” grandparents more involved with your grandkids than you are? It happens, and it’s tough to deal with. Step back to gain a little perspective, and cultivate other relationships and interests. You can also ask (nicely) your adult children and their spouses for more time with the grandchildren if you feel you’re being shortchanged. Also refrain from making too many comparisons to the other grandparents and know that your grandbabies will never know — or care — which of their grandmothers was most on the ball about nappy rash, burping, and gas.

Move beyond name pain

It’s not a popularity contest

It isn’t easy to embrace fully a baby who has been named after a relative you hated, or who was cruel to you, but experts say the process begins with forgiving the relative who wronged you. Forgiving someone is not the same as saying that their behavior was okay. It simply recognizes that they were in so much pain and confusion that he or she acted in ways that a loving person could not. This allows for the possibility that when you speak your grandchild’s name, you can do so with love and joy, not with waves of pain and hurt. The child may just be the catalyst that motivates you to do the healing that will help release the burden you’ve been carrying.

Are your grandchildren’s parents jealous of their kids’ affection for you? Do your grandkids throw a fit when it’s time to leave your house and go home? The intensity of their fondness for you can be a bitter pill for parents. Here’s some advice: • Let your daughter and son-in-law know that as flattering as it is to be so adored by your grandchildren, you are as eager as they are to take steps to reduce the outbursts and tantrums. • If your grandchildren insist on staying at your house, let them to express themselves but answer firmly: “I know this is not what you want to hear, but tonight you’re sleeping at your house.”

As joyful as grand parenting is, there will inevitably come a moment when you’ll be at a loss for words, or just wish you could leave the room.

Answering THAT question

Bedtime blues

Until adolescent hormones begin raging, a child’s interest in sexual behavior is usually nothing more than innocent curiosity. If your grandkids ask you questions, your responses should be simple. If your granddaughter asks why her little brother’s body is different from hers, don’t give her a college-level anatomy lecture; if she asks where babies come from, don’t give her a dissertation on intercourse. A straightforward answer that girls are different from boys, or that parents who love each other know how to make babies, will likely send the kids happily on their way.

Your grandchildren’s bedtime is 8pm but they refuse to go to sleep. You don’t want to punish them but you want to do what their parents have asked. So what can you do? Hold firm. For the kids’ own good, stay faithful to their usual bedtime routine. Try to be as consistent as possible to what goes on at home. Limit the bedtime drama by standing your ground. Letting things slide comes with a price, usually in the form of inadequate sleep for your grandchildren.

Interfering much? If your daughter (or son) tells you you’re a busybody, it will certainly hurt, but understand that they may have done you a favour by telling you their feelings instead of keeping them bottled up. Rather than taking the comment as an insult, look at it as a gesture they’re making to try to make things better. Ask if there are any specific examples of times when they felt you annoyed them, and then listen. Make the conversation into an information-gathering mission, an opportunity for you to understand specifically what they’re talking about. The clearer an idea you have of what they consider upsetting, the better you’ll be able to avoid doing those things in the future.

Awaken your Life’s Purpose by Helen Hansen

Have you ever spent time with some one who is gung-ho about what they love? You may have noticed that others around them soon become upbeat as creative ideas surge through their veins too. If children are in the vicinity, they will shine like light bulbs. You see, enthusiasm is catching and when you’ve got it, all you want to do is share it. Children whose parents are inspired by life, their career, an activity or a service, benefit immensely from such powerful frequencies that flow around them. Externally, they learn to be active with joy and positivity. Internally, oxytocin is released as a result from the inspiration and enthusiasm. Oxytocin is a nine amino acid hormone and neurotransmitter that promotes feelings of friendliness, caring, generosity and feelings of connectedness. You can see how vital oxytocin is for building relationships. The fact of the matter is that the majority of adults do not feel passionate by life, let alone their work. So how can a parent create an atmosphere of inspiration when s/he is not feeling that way? Naturally, it is impossible. Thus, the solution is obvious… in order to ‘rub off’ feelings that will benefit our children we need to first cultivate them ourselves. The first step is to bring into your life something, no matter how small, that excites you. Yes, life is busy but if something is important to us we will make time of it, even if only for a few minutes a day or for thirty minutes once a week. Secondly, share this experience with your child. Speak about it and let your child see and feel how you are feeling. Observe the response. Third is sometimes the most tricky: maintenance. We get used to our ruts and patterns and tend to forget how amazing we feel when we follow our dreams and instead we flop on the couch. Again, by observing you and your consistency and motivation, your child will, over time, acquire this life-long skill. Sometimes our natural inspiration becomes blocked by situations that disturb us, emotional grievances we carry with us and negative thought patterns. Many philosophers have suggested that the key to wisdom is to know ourselves, for when we know ourselves then we can transform into a colourful butterfly, radiating pure essence. Interestingly, the word ‘inspiration’ is defined in the Merriam-Webster online dictionary as “the action or power of moving the intellect or emotions”. If you would like to listen to more about how you can move your emotions and intellect, thereby creating inspiration … CLICK HERE FOR THE ‘INSPIRE YOURSELF’ AUDIO DOWNLOAD

12 Ways for Dad to Bond with Baby Bonding with a newborn can be overwhelming, especially for dad. We've gathered a few fun ways for him to spend a little extra time with his little one •Cradle Baby Close

•Make Silly Faces

•When mom is breastfeeding baby she cuddles him close to her chest and baby has a perfect view into her eyes. When you are bottle-feeding him make sure to hold him in the same position, allowing your little one to gaze up at you.

•You can definitely be the funny guy. Start by just making silly faces that will make your baby glow with a smile. As your baby gets older try fun games like peekaboo.

•Take the Night Shift •If you aren't home during the day to help soothe baby's troubles, become the "rescuer of the night" when baby cries. This will give you and baby precious alone time and give mom the chance to catch some extra zzz's. Be sure mom has left a few bottles in the fridge for late-night feedings.

•Soothe Her Tears •Even though it may be tempting to hand a crying baby back to Mom, take a try at soothing her tears (unless she's hungry, of course). Try singing to her, walking her around, gently rocking, or find the closest pacifier for her to suck on. She must learn that Mom isn't the only one who can give her what she needs.

•Take Him for a Walk •Babies love fresh air, so take your little bundle for a stroll around the block. Try using a sling or carrier instead of your stroller. This will keep baby close to you throughout the walk. Just be sure baby is slathered in sunscreen if it's hot outside and bundled up if it's a little chilly.

•Try a Baby Massage •Babies respond to touch, and a simple way to soothe and relax them is with a baby massage. When your baby is quiet and happy (you won't want to try it on a fussy baby) take 10 to 15 minutes to gently rub her legs, belly, arms, and neck.

•Special Play Time •Set aside time every night to play with your little guy. Make it part of his daily routine, so when you come home from work he expects his daddy time.

I have just celebrated my 89th birthday. I had another wonderful year. During this year, I transitioned more from Louise Hay—the author and speaker that you all know; to Louise Play— looking to enjoy more and more of what life has to offer, although I am finishing up a couple more books :) .

One of the things I have loved to do ever since I was a young girl was to colour in colouring books. I use colouring books just to relax and enjoy the process of creating something beautiful. I am very excited that we are releasing a colouring book for adults with wonderful pages to colour in accompaniment with my affirmations. Hay House did their first adult colouring book about 20 years ago. We have also released a second adult colouring book by Mike Dooley, one of our wonderful Hay House authors. I am looking forward to the year ahead. All is Well,

Coloring In is The Best Alternative To Meditation

According To Psychologists Currently, six of the top 20 selling books on Amazon are adult coloring books. The unlikely pastime for those of us who have successfully graduated from kindergarten has been gaining popularity of late, as an easy means to express oneself and de-stress along the way. Coloring allows to unlock your creative potential. Perhaps more important, it helps relieve tension and anxiety. It unlocks memories of childhood and simpler times. As psychologist Antoni Martínez explains: “I recommend it as a relaxation technique. We can use it to enter a more creative, freer state, done in a quiet environment, even with chill music. Let the color and the lines flow

Ben Michaelis, a psychologist, says, “There is a long history of people coloring for mental health reasons. Carl Jung used to try to get his patients to color in mandalas at the turn of the last century, as a way of getting people to focus and allow the subconscious to let go. Now we know it has a lot of other stressbusting qualities as well.” Basically, if you are having a rough day at work or just a bad day in general, then feel free to take out some crayons or colored pencils and start coloring! We’ve all known someone at some time or another who has been overly negative. It really brings you down. After a while, their negative energy is embodied in you and that’s never good. How can we protect ourselves from people like this? www.higherperspectives.com

1. React appropriately.

4. Be detached.

Don’t meet negativity with more negativity. Don’t just react. React the right way. Be mindful of what you say and how you say it. Don’t just react.

Detach yourself emotionally from them. Hear them out, be the listening ear they need, but don’t invest yourself in it in any way.

2. Keep it light.

5. Don’t try to change them.

When things start getting a little too heavy, change the direction of the conversation to something lighter. Find positive things to talk about. Don’t be afraid to steer them away from negative subjects.

This is kind of a more advanced version of #4. Some negative people either can’t or won’t be changed. They don’t want to. So don’t try to force them into it. This helps protect yourself from their negativity.

3. Find solutions.

6. Set limits.

If you have a friend or relative whose negativity stems from a problem, talk to them about solutions. If they don’t want to find solutions…

When all else fails, set boundaries with negative people. Limit how much time you spend with them. Never meet them in your personal space.

5 INGREDIENTS FOR HAPPINESS 1) Be Grateful 2) Be Helpful 3) Be Understanding 4) Be Kind 5) Be Yourself

Using Bars to Release Old Patterns! by Penni du Plessis

There are many different energy modalities that shift your healing journey out of the traditional (and often sterile) western paradigm into what is often a gentler, more ethereal eastern paradigm and into the world of energy, with Access Bars a relative new comer in South Africa. Simply put, bars therapy works by stimulating 32 bars of energy that run through and around your head. These connect into different aspects of your life and store the electromagnetic component of all the thoughts, ideas, attitudes, decisions and beliefs that you have ever had about anything. This last sentence is worth emphasizing – the bars store the electromagnetic component of all the thoughts, ideas, attitudes, decisions and beliefs you have ever had about anything. As humans we forget that what we think has an invisible energetic component which is stored in our bodies. We can get our minds around statements like “what you think about expands, but not so comfortable with the fact that thoughts have energy. But what if it were true ? What if you have stored the energy of every thought, belief, idea, attitude and decision you have had about anything ? What if that stored energy is acting like an invisible anchor, preventing you from moving from where you are to a new energetic space ? Simply touching the Bars on your head does just that - releases the stored energy locked up in that area or aspect of your life. There are Bars for every aspect of your life, for healing, body, control, awareness, creativity, power, aging, sex and money.

By touching a bar or series of bars you are able to clear away the energy locked up in that area or aspect of your life. When you touch bars in a sequence you clear up any issues and points of view about those two Bars in relation to each other.

This ability to erase stored beliefs is critical. When you function from a preconceived point of view about what is possible in life and what is not possible in life you create a series of limits that are often impossible to shift. Even worse, you are unable to even see other possibilities, all you can see is what matches your world view. Each thought, idea, attitude, decision or belief that you have fixed in place solidifies the energy and limits your capacity to create change in that area. If you can change the energy, you change how that part of your life shows up. This is the power of Bars – it opens you up to new possibilities. At worst you feel like you have just had the best massage of your life. At best your whole life can change into something greater with total ease. People often walk out of a Bars treatment feeling as if the world has suddenly lifted from their shoulders with more energy and a more positive outlook, ready to face the challenges in front of them.

Makes you think, doesn’t it ? Even better, bars does not require either the intensity of training that many other therapies require or the natural healing ability. The Basic Bars takes a day and a half during which you are introduced to what Bars is, the concept of clearing statements (something you will quickly find yourself using every day) and then give and receive 2 Bars sessions.

Why not try it for yourself ? Book a session with a Bars therapist or attend a Divine Space Bars course – I run them regularly. At the very worst you will walk away relaxed. Even better, this could be the shift you need to really get into creating the life you want to love.

By Paula Quinsee How many times have you said yes or committed to something and later regretted it? And then find yourself looking for every excuse in the book to get out

of said commitment…. We dread it as D day draws nearer where we are meant to be at the event or engagement we’ve committed to or to deliver on a task we said we would do. We find ourselves leaving things to the absolute last minute, trying to avoid it in every way possible ending up feeling stressed or running around like a headless chicken.

Why do we do this to ourselves? Usually it is because we fear letting people down or disappointing them, when in fact we end up letting ourselves down for not standing firm and speaking our truth.

Now there’s nothing wrong with being the nice guy and wanting to help others but when it comes at your own expense, you’re going to end up in trouble sooner or later.

We take on every request that comes our way whether its work related, to do with our kids or even family situations and before you know it we are so busy we don’t have time to blink. Then we get stressed and frustrated because we’re not getting to all things we’ve said yes to, and we drive ourselves ragged trying to cope with the pressure we’ve placed on ourselves to meet everyone else’s needs except our own….

Being ‘busy’ gives us a sense of identity and importance, that we are needed and wanted which talks to our very essence. On a deeper level we all crave a similar thing, to be loved and accepted, and being wanted or needed by others (even at the price of self) fulfills this desire. As a result, we allow our personal boundaries to be compromised in the process.

Sound familiar? You are a ‘yes man’, a people pleaser.

Running yourself ragged is only going to lead to a wave of emotions ranging from frustration, anger, resentment, unhappiness to possibly even illness as your body tries to cope with the pressure of it all.

So what can you do about this situation? 1.First of all you need to take in a deep breath. Breathing helps to regulate the central nervous system and calms us down. 2.Next, get a piece of paper and write down all the tasks or commitments you need to complete and by when.

3.Now prioritize them according to importance (0-low – 10-high), date needed by and what resource you need to help you complete the tasks (e.g. your bookkeeper needs to help you complete your tax return). 4.Now, go make yourself a cup of tea and take a walk around the garden for at least 10 minutes, then come back to your list.

Often when we are under pressure we find ourselves feeling overwhelmed and unsure of where to start, leaving us with a sense of inadequacy or procrastinating putting ourselves under more pressure and so the cycle continues. Right now that you’ve had your tea and cleared your mind, let’s tackle the list one by one. Look at the tasks that you have prioritized as a high priority (anything above a 6) and review them. Are they really a 6 and above or can some actually be ranked a lower priority? 5.Of those tasks you are confident need to be ranked high, what resources do you need in order to complete the tasks, what needs to happen for you to get the resources you need and by when? Create an action list for these tasks.

6. Anything ranked a 3 – 6 is considered a low priority. This is usually something we want to do yet the motivation to do it is low, so we need to ask ourselves how badly do we want to do this task? More often than not the answer involves a ‘should, must or have to’. A should, must or have to’ is born from expectations we perceive others have of us when in actual fact it is the expectations we have placed on ourselves. 7. Anything below a 3 is stuff that has been on your list for so long that it no longer warrants your attention. Delete it. Take it off the list. Do it now.

8. Time for another tea break and a walk around the garden for another 10 minutes. If you’re not used to tackling tasks like this you are possibly feeling a little guilty, maybe even doubting the ranking on some of the tasks on your list. Take in another deep breath and let it go. Know that all is well in this moment. 9.Now go back to the items ranked a 3 – 6. Look at them again, Are there any items here that you can say no to? In other words it’s those items you feel you should but deep down if you are completely honest with yourself, you know you don’t want to do them. Got any like that? Right – say no to them and cross them off your list. Do it. Now. 10.Once you have done that, focus on completing the tasks you have ranked 6 and above by acquiring the resources you need in order to complete the tasks within the required timeframe. 11.Congratulations! You’ve officially broken free of the shackles that have been wearing you down. Now you just need to keep the momentum going and not fall back into the same trap again.

Learning to say NO! Learning to say no is a liberating exercise; it gives you a sense of being control of your life vs. your life running away with you. The more you listen to your gut as to whether you really want to commit to a task or engagement, the more you will be speaking your truth and living your real essence. The hardest part about learning to say no is the first time you do it; from then on it gets easier. It also allows new opportunities to come into your space because you have cleared out all the baggage that was standing in the way before. Go forth and go free to be you and to do the things you want to do in your life and not what you think everyone else wants from you.

The Top 5 Benefits of Aromatherapy Aromatherapy, a widely used form of alternative medicine, utilizes an array of essential oils to bring about an incredible number of positive results for both the body and the mind. And while essential oils, coming from the pure essences of plants and flowers, are the primary medium used in aromatherapy, they are not the only ones. Sea salts, milk powders, muds and clays, herbs, and cold pressed vegetable oils are also often used. The various fragrances of essential oils and other natural ingredients used in aromatherapy have a direct effect on the olfactory system, or our sense of smell, which then triggers the limbic system within the brain that is connected with several vital functions of the body. Although the list is rather impressive, here are the top five most commonly known benefits of aromatherapy:

1. Eases Nausea The essential oils ginger and peppermint are commonly used for easing and relieving the discomfort of nausea. Inhaling the aroma of a few drops of either oil is said to relieve an upset stomach. Peppermint does double duty as it also helps to raise your feelings of alertness and concentration while easing the symptoms of asthma and sinusitis. Ginger is an equally versatile essential oil as it is said to help with arthritis, fatigue, and sore muscles in addition to easing nausea.

2. Increases Energy

4. Relieves Anxiety and Stress

To increase energy, alertness, focus, and concentration, aromatherapy with cinnamon, peppermint, or rosemary may do the trick. Also use black pepper to improve circulation, which then allows the brain to function better. And if depression is causing a decrease in energy or motivation, try rose oil, sandalwood, orange, lemon, grapefruit, or clary sage.

Aromatherapy has long been known as a natural way of relieving both anxiety and stress. To relax and calm your racing or worrisome mind, jasmine is perfect for relaxation while chamomile, lavender and rose are ideal for calming. To bring about a feeling of peace and contentment, try using lavender and rosemary together. For times of severe stress, use vetiver, ylang ylang, patchouli, neroli, geranium, cedarwood, or bergamot.

3. Improves the Quality of Sleep If you’re leery of using either prescription or over the counter medication to promote sleep, aromatherapy is one alternative to consider. Both chamomile and lavender are used in aromatherapy to bring about deep, quality sleep that allows you to awake feeling rested and alert.

5. Brings Relief from Headaches Headaches can range from the minor and mildly annoying to the severe and debilitating. Those who suffer from chronic headaches can build up a tolerance to medication, rendering it less effective. Others simply haven’t been able to find a remedy that really works. Try using the essential oil of peppermint for relief from headaches, and if PMS is the cause of migraines or severe headaches, chamomile may help ease the symptoms including irritability and mood swings.

Used for centuries to bring about both mental and emotional well being, aromatherapy is still used in conjunction with modern medicine. While it should not be looked upon as a magical cure-all, aromatherapy can be a viable, complementary tool to use along with any necessary medical treatments to bring about healing from within.

It’s become apparent that the ability to see various colors varies widely from person to person. The reason for this stems from differences in the number of cone cells each of us has inside our eyes. These cells function as photoreceptors; the number you have affects how many colors of the visible light spectrum you can pick out. The simple test published below was created by Professor Diana Derval. Answer the question and then check the answers, and you’ll be able to find out how well you see the world around you — and how much your perception differs from other people. Count the number of colors and shades you can see in the spectrum:

If you see… Less than 20 colors: You’re a dichromat. This means that you have only two types of cone cells. ’However, don’t worry — you’re in good company here, since dogs have exactly the same kind of vision’, jokes Professor Derval. Perhaps you like to wear black, beige or dark blue colored-clothing most of all. Twenty-five percent of the world’s population are dichromate. Between 20 and 33 colors: You have trichromatic vision. This means your eyes have three types of cone cells. You are able to perceive purple, dark blue, green and red colors well. This is great — 50% of the world’s population have the same kind of vision as you.

bodymindsoulspirit

Between 34 and 39 colors: Wow! You have tetrachromatic vision. Much like bees, you possess four different kinds of cone cells in your eyes and see the majority of colors in the visible light spectrum. The chances are you’re not a fan of yellow and you have next to no yellow clothing in your wardrobe. Only 25% of people can see all the colors in the spectrum. It’s always interesting to compare your results with friends.

Adam blamed Eve, Eve blamed the Snake! Who do you blame? Since the beginning of time most of us have been busy blaming others. The world has become full of people who wallow in self-pity. We have been conditioned to look for reasons and solutions outside of ourselves. The truth is we have become disconnected and through disconnect and blame we are sabotaging our desires. If you truly want to create a better life then it's time to change things, it’s time to take ownership. But HOW? Well, you need to acknowledge that you are a multidimensional being with 5 layers (or bodies). You are mind, body, heart, spirit and bliss (or oneness ) And if you know what the greatest vision of your life looks like, you can co-create it. But you can’t be a co-creator if you blame other people or circumstances.

Start paying attention to what sets you off, what triggers you, what makes you react, what makes you angry, sad or irritated? And then think of other times in your past when you felt the same. You will come to recognize that it's not the people or circumstances that makes you feel that way, but your response to them. Your response is determined by your belief systems (BS) So if your BS is making you react like a victim then HOW do you change it? It's time to take 100% responsibility for of all your experiences

To do this you must become aware of your thoughts and the words you use. When you are aware you will notice which ones serve and which sabotage your goals The days of blaming are over. The world is changing and these changes are affecting our relationships, health care systems, education, how we do business and how we raise our kids. If we don't take responsibility and change with it, it's just going to get harder. To take responsibility for the experiences that created the negative BS we need to go back in time to who we were when they was created. From that point, we can clear the mind-set and erase the consciousness that created it.

It's important to note, that we are not blaming or judging ourselves here, we are simply practicing one of the most powerful tools available to humankind; the act of conscious repentance. When you practice conscious repentance you practice forgiveness, love and gratitude. It will help you clear, cleanse and shift from victim-consciousness into proactiveconsciousness. When this happens you will begin to change your life's experiences. And in this space you can start co-creating “Your Powerful Life"

Life is about living. You are meant to be joyful, healthy and fulfilled. Everything you need is already within you. You just need to know how to find it and what to do with it.

"Authenticity is a collection of choices that we have to make every day. It's about the choice to show up and be real. The choice to be honest. The choice to let our true selves be seen. Brene Brown Every week, I have the privilege of talking to coaching clients who are learning to tell the truth. They sit in front of me, on Skype or sometimes in person, and they speak the most tender words about what they really believe, what they really want to spend their time doing, or what they are longing to walk away from. Often, I have the honour of being the first person to hear these tender new truths.

I applaud every one of these truth-tellers. They are courageous in their desire to be authentic and in their willingness to be witnessed by at least one person. It doesn't matter to me how long it's taken them to get to this place, or how long it will take them to speak it to an audience larger than one - I only care that they are here now and that they are saying it out loud. Always, they have walked through fear and sometimes through fire before coming to this place

Sometimes my clients are launching new businesses, sometimes they're learning to share their stories with the world, sometimes they're finding the courage to teach what has long been growing in their hearts, and sometimes they're stepping onto new spiritual journeys unlike what they've embraced in the past. There are differences in what they share with me, what they want me to help them with, and what they're transitioning into, but there are also many similarities

Sometimes truth-telling takes a long, long time. The similarities are these: they are trying to find the courage to live more authentically, they are seeking a witness who will hold space for them and help them see more clearly, they are admitting that something about their old way of walking in the world no longer fits what is emerging in them, and they are facing resistance (whether external, internal, or both) that tells them they should stay safe But these are not people who are comfortable with staying safe, or they wouldn't have hired me. The very act of reaching out for someone to witness them and help them find clarity was an act of courage. These are people who know they can no longer live with the status quo.

For most of these people, though, it takes a long, long time to get to the place where they are ready to hire a coach and do the hard work of articulating and growing whatever beautiful, tender green shoot they're holding. Some clients are in their sixties, seventies, or even eighties, and though they sometimes worry that it's too late to embrace a new way of living, they know they can't be satisfied with the old comforts anymore. And that, dear reader, brings me to what I want to say to you... Give it as much space as you can right now and forgive yourself for what you just can't do yet. This is not a race. Sometimes it takes a long time because you're afraid a change in you will hurt the people near and dear to you. Sometimes it's because you are busy raising children and you are too exhausted to do anything else. Sometimes the whispering is frighteningly counter-cultural and you know the risk of trusting it is just too overwhelming right now.

Sometimes you first need to extricate yourself from a bad relationship before you can dedicate time to your own growth. Or sometimes you find yourself in the kind of financial or emotional distress that just doesn't leave any energy for truth-telling.

It doesn't matter how long it takes. It only matters that you don't ignore whatever is whispering in your heart. It's not hard to find coaches or teachers who would give you "easy" answers for all of those things that get in the way, but none of that is truly easy and nobody else can know the challenge of your reality. Only you know what is holding you back and only you know when you are ready for the next step. Only you know the depth of your own fear or trauma or old baggage Good things take time to grow. Some bamboo plants grow roots for four years before anything begins to emerge above ground. You don't need to rush it and you don't need to take on anyone else's story of what you should be capable of right now.

Just take the baby steps you can take right now.

In the early days of my own emergence, when I was employed in a government job and raising small children and thought it was taking far too long to find the path I knew was searching for, I wrote many tender thoughts and ideas in my journal. For years, that was the only place those ideas found a home. I dared not speak what I didn't fully understand yet and what didn't fit with what was expected of me. It took several years before I started to find like-minded people to whom I could tentatively speak of that which I longed for. At first, there were only a few trusted people, and gradually, as I felt more and more safe, the circles grew. With each growth of the circles, I had to work through a new level of fear and practice stepping into a new level of courage. These things don't happen overnight. There is a lot of learning to do along the way and a lot of tiny acts of courage that take more energy than we expect. This is even more true if the growth includes healing from past trauma and/or grief, as it does for many of us.

Give yourself time. Take the step you are ready to take, and then when the time is right, you'll take the one after that.

ABOUT ME I am a teacher, writer, coach, retreat host, and facilitator. I am also a wisdom-seeker, edge-walker, community-gatherer, and story-catcher. I delight in gathering circles of people together to share stories, ask questions, co-create, and build community. I delight in holding space for people as they discover their courage and grow their ideas. www.heatherplett.com

If your doctor says you have refractory epilepsy, it means that medicine isn't bringing your seizures under control. You might hear the condition called by some other names, such as uncontrolled, intractable, or drug-resistant epilepsy. Ketogenic Diet The Ketogenic Diet was originally developed in the USA in the early 1920s and has recently been shown to be effective in a randomized clinical trial in children with treatment-resistant epilepsy (Neal et al., 2009). It is a highly restricted dietary regimen that is typically initiated in a hospital. The diet requires careful weighing of foods and is very high in fat, but restricts carbohydrates, protein and caloric intake. The Ketogenic Diet is now considered to be the recommended first treatment for specific types of epilepsy in children. Also, it is becoming an important alternative to drug therapy for children with medically intractable seizures. However, it is important to consider that the Ketogenic Diet requires a high level of dietary supervision, commitment and resources The management of epilepsy must be initiated as soon as possibly possible in order to prevent permanent damage to the brain, however 30% to 40% of individuals suffering from epilepsy fail to respond to antiepileptic drugs (AED).This is known as drug resistant, intractable or refractory epilepsy . The ketogenic diet (KD), which is a high fat and adequate protein diet, has been proven to be safe and efficacious in individuals suffering from refractory epilepsy. The KD for each patient is specified according to the patient’s diagnosis, age, lifestyle and nutritional status, a registered and adequately trained dietitian is required to assist in determining the specific dietary needs for each patient. While the mechanisms underlying the KD’s anticonvulsant effect remain elusive, the KD provides the brain with ketones formed from the fat metabolism instead of glucose such as in a normal diet. The ketones have an anticonvulsant effect and may alleviate seizures.

6 Benefits of Eating A Whole Foods Diet by Derek Henry People are catching on that a whole foods diet is a superior approach to achieving optimal health. Consuming plants directly from nature in an unadulterated format just seems to be the right thing to do and the way we feel confirms it. However, if one needs more convincing, here are six distinct benefits of eating a whole foods diet.

More nutrients

More fibre

Plant foods are richer sources of nutrients than their animal counterparts. Compare wheat germ to round steak. Ounce for ounce, wheat germ contains twice the vitamin B2, vitamin K, potassium, iron and copper; three times the vitamin B6, molybdenum and selenium; 15 times as much magnesium; and over 20 times the vitamin B1, folate and inositol. The steak only has three nutrients in greater amounts: vitamin B12, chromium and zinc. Plant foods also contain a higher probiotic and enzyme content, which is key to maintaining proper intestinal ecology. A thriving gut promotes proper nutrient absorption and proper disposal of waste, both of which are critical to a healthy body.

Most animal products, like meat, eggs, dairy and cheese, do not contain fiber, while brown rice, broccoli, oatmeal and almonds have six to 15g per serving. Fiber is the transport system of the digestive tract, moving food wastes out of the body before it has the chance to form into potentially cancer causing chemicals. These toxic chemicals can cause colon cancer or pass through the gastrointestinal membrane into the bloodstream and damage other cells.

Decreased sugar consumption Eating a diet high in natural complex carbohydrates tends to be more filling and decreases the desire to consumed processed sugars. Lower sugar consumption also decreases overall food intake. As with fat, sugar is a hidden and unwelcome ingredient in many processed foods. When eating primarily vegetables, a high sugar intake is automatically kept under control due to their low sugar content.

Increased variation

Balanced nutrients

A greater variety of vegetables also exposes consumers to, literally, more colorful foods, like red beets, chard, yellow squash, red peppers and cabbage. The variations in color are due to various minerals, vitamins and other nutrients that perform important health promoting functions in the body.

Foods grown naturally develop with the right proportion of carbohydrates, proteins and fats intended for that particular food. They contain balanced vitamins, minerals, phyto-nutrients and enzymes.

More food satisfaction and less over-eating Foods, such as vegetables, whole grains and beans, that are dense in nutrients and fiber require more chewing time and often result in the consumption of fewer calories. Eating whole foods makes a person more quickly satisfied, which means that the person will eat less. Eating less is associated with longevity and optimal health.

This natural balance within the foods ensures that the body can properly utilize the nutrients provided to it in order to balance and heal each and every body cell. Foods that have been refined, processed (parts of them removed or altered) or enriched/fortified (things added) upset this natural balance in foods and will do the same to your body and your body's cells. Transitioning from processed to whole foods can be a challenge due to habits and taste profiles that have been created over decades. However, adopting a whole foods diet and knowing which foods have the most benefits will provide a new energy that will keep one motivated to stay on the path to true health.

We're in For a Scorching Summer Here are some tips to protect your garden a little Everyone is talking about the heat we're experiencing, and it's only spring! We suspect we're in for an absolute scorcher of a summer. Which can take it's toll on your garden. Wilted plants, with burnt leaves, will be a common appearance. Of course though we know a few ways so save your garden from losing all it's moisture and over heating. 1. Water deeply. A deep watering that goes all the way down to the roots will encourage root growth to go downwards. A lighter watering causes roots to grow higher in the soil, and will cause your plants to dry out quickly. Deep roots, and deep water, helps plants be more drought tolerant. Which is important with el nino causing weather havoc. Tip: Use a rain gauge while you're watering to make sure you're giving at least 30mm of water weekly. 2. Mulch. Weren't we harping on about mulch for winter? Well yes. We were. It's just as important to insulate your plants and keep the root temperature stable. Mulch also prevents moisture loss. Almost anything can be used as mulch. We recommend hay because of the nutritional value it adds when it composts. A proper layer of mulch will prevent weeds from growing too. Which is a great help in the growing seasons! Tip: When laying out hay, it should be as deep as about the fist two joints on your fingers. Water deeply before, and then afterwards. The second watering helps to prevent hay fever from the hay. 3. Fertilise, anti pest and anti fungus. Make sure your plants don't go hungry! Last month was the month to add granular fertiliser for a slow release action. Monthly we add either worm castings or another liquid fertiliser. This is also the season for pests to start multiplying. So take care of that now before it gets out of control. With the warm, and the wet from watering, gardens are susceptible to fungal infections. Keep an eye out and treat if you see something fungal like. Of course you can use a product monthly to prevent a fungus from striking in the first place. Tip: You don't need chemicals to control your garden! We stock a range of effective anti pests and fungalcide's that are natural and organic. We keep our garden happy following all these steps. And we benefit with crisp and crunchy greens, and juicy fruits such as tomatoes. Yummy!

See you in the garden!

Rhubarb The root and rhizome of this vegetable have been used in medicine for many years to balance any digestive complaints, cleanse the colon and to stimulate appetite. It's also been used in pies. Which is what I think of when I think of rhubarb. This member of the buckwheat family is filled with potent anti oxidants such as resveratrol, lutein, and zeaxanthin. Rhubarb is also filled with B-complex vitamins, vitamins A, K and C, calcium, potassium, and manganese Research is being done on rhubarb's anti cancer properties thanks to emodin, which is one of the plant chemicals that has been shown to encourage the death of cancer cells in the body, preventing proliferation and metastasizing of cancer cells Rhubarb is low in calories, low in fat, cholesterol free, and is high in fibre, making it a great weight loss assistant. Interesting news for me is that cooking rhubarb increases it's anti oxidant activity. Raw rhubarb is also very healthy, and can be added to your favourite juice blend, or dipped in something sweet (like honey or coconut sugar) to sweeten the tart taste

Warning: eat the stems only! The leaves can be poisonous.

MOTHER LAUNCHES HER OWN READY-MADE FOOD COMPANY TO SUPPORT HER DAUGHTER’S GLUTEN INTOLERANCE My daughter was diagnosed with Ulcerative Colitis| Inflammatory Bowel Disease last year. In our search to find a cure it was recommended by doctors that she cuts out all wheat from her diet. The result of this was that my daughter was left with very little to eat. There is not an abundance of prepared READY made meals available in SA, which is very surprising as there are so many people that are gluten intolerant. The only available gluten free products available are dry foods such as pastas and breads. Of course if you had to go buy these expensive products, you still have to cook the food.

Available at selected stores. See website

This lead me to develop my own company, hoping to help people like my daughter and inspire change in our own diets as well. To your health! Francisca Cell: 0829017744

Can’t sleep? Insomnia and how to overcome it naturally

Sleep, according to natural medicine practitioner Dr Joseph Mercola, ‘is one of the great mysteries of life. We still don’t understand exactly why we sleep.’ We do know, however, that can damage our health. Those precious six to eight hours of good sleep every night are vital for good physical, mental and emotional health. Too little or too much can have the adverse effect. In truth, how many of us suffer with insomnia, lie tossing and turning at night, worrying about our problems and watching the hours pass with increasing anxiety?

The sleep cycle Do you tend to sacrifice sleep because your workday went on longer than planned and you want to watch some late-night TV to chill out? My hand is raised. Is yours? It’s no comfort to know that too little sleep can have serious, far-reaching effects on your health. Several studies have shown that healthy sleep habits are linked to better cognition, alertness and emotional wellbeing, says US neurologist Dr Ina E. Djonlagic. ‘It’s not just about the amount of time, but also about the timing of our sleep schedules, our biological clocks, that we need to be aware of,’ she says, and offers an example. ‘This is especially important in teenagers who, at the onset of puberty, undergo changes in their circadian rhythm, which regulates sleep. This is linked to the brain’s release of melatonin, the chemical that helps us sleep. Teenage brains tell the body to go to sleep at 23h00. At the same time, their bodies still require at least nine hours of sleep per night. So it’s unsurprising that studies show that students who have later start times get better results and are less depressed and irritable.’ The teenage study group reported being more motivated to do their schoolwork and more able to assimilate new information. The reason? When we sleep, our brains process information from the day, fixing the details in our heads and even finding new insights into problems. That’s why insomnia and other sleep problems need to be addressed.

Too little sleep? Restless sleep? Here’s the bad news….Insomnia or sleep problems can: 1.Weaken your immune system. 2.Impair your memory. Even one night of poor sleep (you’ve dozed for a mere four to six hours) can affect your ability to think clearly the next day. And the effects are cumulative. Persistent insomnia and sleep problems can severely impair your ability to function effectively, leaving you struggling to fulfil normal physical or mental tasks. 3.Make you moody and irritable. 4.Contribute to the development of some psychiatric disorders, such as depression. 5.Allow tumors to grow faster – according to Dr Mercola, ‘tumors grow two to three times faster in laboratory animals with severe sleep dysfunctions.’ When your sleeping patterns are disrupted, he continues, your body produces less of the hormone and antioxidant melatonin and ‘has less ability to fight cancer, since melatonin helps suppress free radicals that can lead to cancer.’ 6.Make you hungry, even if you’ve already eaten. That’s bad news for weight control and the possibility of diabetes. 7.Increase your chance of stress-related disorders such as heart disease, stomach ulcers and constipation. 8.Interrupt your growth hormone production, leading to premature ageing.

The good news: you can improve your sleep problems 1.Go to bed at the same time every night. Yes, on weekends too. This will help your body establish a regular sleep pattern, making it easier to fall asleep and get up in the morning. 2.Put your work away at least one hour before bedtime. Leave the last hour or two before bedtime to unwind. You’ll be less likely to feel anxious about the next day at the office and more likely to fall asleep. 3.Reserve your bedroom for sleeping. If you usually watch TV or work in bed, you may find it harder to relax and drift off to sleep, so avoid doing these activities in bed. They stimulate the brain, preventing you from falling asleep quickly.

4.Make your bedroom as dark as possible. Draw the curtains (blackout blinds are the best for sleep); switch off all lights in the house. Shafts of light pass directly through your optic nerve to your hypothalamus, says Dr Mercola, which controls your biological clock. ‘Light signals your brain that it’s time to wake up and starts preparing your body for action.’ 5.Keep your bedroom at a comfortable temperature. Studies show that the optimal room temperature for sleep is quite cool, between 15–20 degrees Celsius. Keeping your room cooler or hotter can lead to sleep problems and insomnia. When you sleep, your body’s internal temperature drops to its lowest level, generally about four hours after you fall asleep. Scientists believe a cooler bedroom may therefore be most conducive to sleep, since it mimics your body’s natural temperature drop. 6.Don’t drink any fluids within two hours of going to bed to reduce the likelihood of your needing to go to the bathroom, or at least minimize the frequency. Instead, eat a high-protein snack several hours before bed, Dr Mercola recommends. It can provide the L-tryptophan needed for your melatonin and serotonin production. A small piece of fruit can help the tryptophan cross your blood-brain barrier. Try not to have bedtime snacks, especially grains and sugars, which raise your blood sugar and delay sleep. 7.Take a hot bath or shower before bed. When your body temperature is raised in the late evening, it will fall at bedtime, facilitating slumber. The temperature drop from getting out of the bath signals your body it’s time for bed. 8.Wear socks to bed. Feet often feel cold before the rest of the body because they have the poorest circulation. A study has shown that wearing socks to bed helps prevent sleep problems. 9.Read something spiritual or uplifting. This may help you relax. Don’t read anything stimulating, such as a mystery or suspense novel, which has the opposite effect. In addition, if you are really enjoying a gripping book, you might be tempted to go on reading for hours, instead of going to sleep!

10.Keep a journal. If your mind races at bedtime, it might be helpful to keep a journal and write down your thoughts before bed. It’s one way to put the day’s events behind you and banish insomnia.

SA’s sunny skies in the festive season are enough to make anyone crave the outdoors, with gym routines being forgotten as a result. The irony of it? Summer is when we strive to be in the best shape possible! If you want to keep fit while still enjoying the feel good factor of the holiday season, here are some activities to get you there. Bounce it out: As adults, jumping on trampolines is often a foreign and forgotten pleasure to be re-enjoyed! The benefits are also endless, with rebounding improving everything from core strength, bone density and joint health to cellulite and skin tone! Join the kids and make the most of trampolines, whether at home or at your holiday destination. You can even pencil it in properly and try out the new bouncing facilities cropping up nationwide that are essentially wall-to-wall trampolines lined with foam.

Hit the water: Our warm weather should already have you in the water, so make the most of it! Stand up paddle-boarding remains one of the most popular, family-friendly and physically demanding watersports of the moment, but you can get back to basics and enjoy skiing and tubing – while torching a ton of calories. Kayaking and paddle-boats are easier options if you’re going it alone or just with a partner. Another firm family favourite is a nearby waterpark.

Join a community: It’s still scheduled exercise, but gathering at the beachfront or park for a communal run adds an element of festivity to your average 5km. Join one of the many free running or trail running clubs in your area and bring the whole family along. Keep an eye out for specific family events like colour runs and night cycles as well.

Make your home a playground: Gardens and driveways provide the perfect space for badminton or volleyball nets. Set them up for your kids and their friends – and for you and yours as well! Having a fun and social activity at home will encourage your kids to get active and enjoy time with the family as well, to up the fun factor.

Hit the roller derby: A little more alternative, maybe, but definitely no less fun! This typically American femaledominated contact sport is finally trickling down into South Africa and will have you sweating out your calories in a big way. If you’re confident on your roller-skates, you can sign up for weekly games at a small fee – and if the trend hasn’t hit your area yet, simply don your skates and hit the promenade instead!

Explore the sea: Snorkelling and diving are one of the most pleasant ways to exert energy outdoors. Start light with some easy snorkeling, or take it to the next level and enjoy a scuba diving course. If that’s a bit intimidating, rent a seawalker and enjoy walking on the ocean floor! The resistance of the water will tone without you noticing.

Explore by foot: Whether you’re in a new destination or home for the holidays, be a tourist and plan a walking tour. Pick a trail route, picnic site or a historical monument and plan a walking route around it.

Plan a DIY holiday project: This could be for you, or the family as a whole, but take on a fairly physical DIY project for the holidays. Maybe you want to build that veggie patch, make a small treehouse for the kids or use pallets for outside furniture. It could even be as simple as painting an outside wall a different colour for a fun upgrade. Get creative and physical at the same time and enjoy a tangible reward at the end of it.

Walk and talk: Do you and your bestie love your weekly catch ups? Skip the wine and chocolate on the couch and meet up in a nearby park or communal garden instead. Map a route and enjoy a brisk walk while catching up as usual – a coffee at the end of it could serve as a reward when you’re done

Hit the gym – outdoors: That’s right – all the benefits of a regular gym, cleverly structured for outdoor use! These amazing innovations may seem like a strange set of jungle gyms at first glance – but don’t be fooled. The outdoor gym equipment lets you train muscle groups with added resistance, and is both free and open 24/7! All our main cities are well-equipped with outdoor gyms, nationwide! Browse online for an outdoor gym in your area and enjoy a fully-equipped gym workout in the fresh air.

Fight the December heat and take your workout to the pool. Summer is the perfect time to exercise outdoors, and working out in water adds natural resistance. Here are a few exercises for you to practice at home, so you can tone up while cooling down. Tips for a water workout: -

Stay hydrated. Just because you are in the water doesn’t mean your body isn’t sweating! Sunblock is a biggie during outdoor exercise. If you’re happy to keep your head above the water, a hat is a good option to keep you safe from the sun. Wear your ‘sunnies'. Sun exposure is one of the most underrated contributions to deteriorating eye health. Look for sunglasses that are 100% UV ray preventative, remembering that the shade of the glasses is not indicative of the UV protection.

Tricep dip: Seat yourself on the edge of the pool, then slide into the water, holding yourself up with both arms. Slower lower yourself into the water, bending your arms to 90 degrees. Hold for a moment then return to your starting position. Aim for 3 sets of 10-15 reps.

Pool push-up: Stand at the shallow end of your pool, resting your hands on the poolside. Slowly pull yourself out the water, straightening your arms as you rise. Without locking your elbows, hold for a moment, then lower back down into the water until your hands are in line with your chest. Aim for 3 sets of 10-15 reps.

Leg sweep: Stand in the shallow end of the pool with arms held at shoulder height to keep your balance. Keeping your torso tight, sweep one leg up in front of you to hip height. Pause, then sweep it back behind you, again bringing it up to hip height. Aim for 3 sets of 10-15 reps, then repeat with the opposite leg

Leg lift: With your back against the poolside and arms along the pool-edge for support, touch your legs to the bottom of the pool. Keeping your abs and quads tight, pull your legs up to hips height, holding them in a straight line. Hold for a moment then return to your starting position. Aim for 3 sets of 10-15 reps, depending on your fitness level

Ab swivel: With your back against the poolside and arms along the pool-edge for support, bring your knees towards your chest. Stretch your legs straight in front of you, then swivel them to the left as you pull your knees back up towards your chest. Stretch your legs out as you return to the centre, then swivel them to the right, pulling your knees towards your chest again as you do so. Aim for 3 sets of 10-15 reps, depending on your fitness levels.

SPRING HAS SPRUNG AN HOLISTIC SOLUTION TO ALLERGIES AND FLEAS We, as humans, adapt to change in climate and amend our habits accordingly. For example, when the weather is hot we wear lighter clothing and we generally eat less bulky meals. We protect ourselves from the UV rays and we probably shower more often, especially after spending each day at Clifton beach or a trek through Newlands forest. Our pets rely on us for their daily activities and feed as well as their general exposure to the environment. It is, therefore, essential that we understand our companion and make the necessary adaptations to the change in climate. Offering your companion a variety of different foods or adding tasty tit bits may improve appetite. Identify whether your companion is a “hot” dog and then include cooling supplements into the meal. Remember, not to over do it with washing and shampooing, as their natural skin bacteria is very venerable. Rather rinse with fresh water or even a Natural Rooibos Soak.

Summer and hot weather impacts on the well being and behavior of our pets.

Spring affects our companion in many ways but the biggest irritant is fleas and itchy skin. This is both traumatic for pet owner and pet. Allergens are rife and abundant and our pets seem to react to everything:

Long grass, dust mites and flea bites – allergies It is important to boost your pet’s immunity during this season. Strong immunity is your pet’s sole protector against allergies. Supplementation is essential and should be administered religiously. The use of probiotics and/or spirulina would be well advised. A good quality omega 3 fish oil (not flax) is essential. Include apple cider vinegar daily in your pet’s water or food. Diatomaceous Earth is a natural parasite cleanser and will help rid toxins and parasites. A natural diet with vegetables and loads of cooling herbs like mints, sages, lemon balm would help to build immunity and calm and cool irritable skin.

Fleas and Ticks In the last few years we have seen an epidemic of fleas. They just will not go away. Whilst it is always tempting to use strong chemicals and poisons to rid these pets, it will certainly impact on your pet’s well being and sensitive skin. Here is the dilemma. If you choose to use flea and tick drops, it may rid fleas, but it certainly will impact on your pet’s immunity and ability to deal with allergens and thus may worsen skin conditions. The use of natural chemical free repellents is well advised and can be just as effective if applied regularly. Khakibos as a spray is fantastic to apply on your dogs. For cats we would recommend the khakibos powder. Knowing how rife fleas and ticks are at the moment, I would recommend daily use. When we go to the beach and sunbath we apply sun protection is advance. We don’t wait to get burnt and then apply a sun cream after. The same is true with regards to applying khakibos onto our pets. Let’s keep them off our pets as a first priority! Internally, I would recommend increasing the daily dose of fresh garlic. Another alternative would be the use of aloe ferox bitter crystals (they are extremely bitter and you would have to hide the crystal in some meat or snack). Only one small crystal taken every few days is necessary. Spring and Summer in South Africa is truly special but it can be problematic for our pets. Fleas and allergies can be contained naturally by boosting our companion’s natural immune system. Extra care and time is required during these months but the results are worth it. After all, a happy pet means a happy owner.

LEARN FROM THE ANIMALS Animals do teach us unconditional love. This is true. Imagine then, if we learned from them and treated each other with as much love, tolerance and patience. We are much more patient with our animals than we are with our spouses. We forgive our animals much easier than we forgive our spouses, friends, family and children. We rise up as one to defend animals, yet we often fail to rise for fellow humans. We tolerate snippy behaviour from our animals much more than we would from... our loved ones. We handle our animals 'off days' with more compassion than we do the people we love. I can only imagine how I'd react if my partner unrolled the toilet paper seven times a week. I know how I've reacted when my partner broke my special vase, or scratched my car. I know that I'd get irritated if my partner vomited up a hairball on my rug every other week. Yes, animals do teach us unconditional love, we just fail to learn that from them.

How do I introduce my new kitten to my older dogs? Before introducing a kitten to your adult dogs allow some time for your kitten to settle in her new environment and become comfortable with you. Introduce your kitten to the house slowly and provide a warm hiding place for your kitten to retreat to in case she feels threatened at any time. It may take several days or even a couple of weeks before your kitten is confident in her new home and closely bonded to you. During this time keep her separated from your dogs. By the time your kitten is comfortable with her new home your dogs will have become used to the presence of a new member of the household. Prepare to introduce your kitten and dogs by choosing a room in the house that no animals will feel particularly territorial in. Continue to keep all animals separated, if possible introduce them through individual cages so that they are all safe from scratches and bites. Try and introduce your pets slowly over several days - do not hurry your introductions, it may be a few weeks before you are confident that your pets will behave themselves once out of their enclosures. Once you allow your pets to interact it is important that you supervise your kitten and dogs so that you can intervene any of the animals become aggressive. During these interactions, it is a good idea to make sure that there is somewhere safe and secure for your kitten to retreat to if it becomes frightened such as a window sill or a bookshelf where your dogs cannot reach it. Do not leave your animals alone together until you are confident that they tolerate each other. Over time, your dogs should become used to the idea of having the kitten around and they should all be able to get along without you having to watch over them.
