If you've been down to Haebangcheon lately, you’ll have noticed a new kid on the block. In partnership with Pilsner Urquell, the boys from Hidden Cellar have expanded upstairs with a new pop bar, The Workshop. Unfortunately, they’ll be calling time on their upstairs sojourn come April.

This month, Chip’s Maps sat down with the District Mayor of Yongsan to ask him some questions! Mayor Sung Jang-hyun first served in 1998 and was inaugurated again in 2010, serving as the district mayor ever since. 1998년도에 처음, 그리고 2010년에 다시 구청장으로 부임해 지금까지 용산구를 책임지고 있는 성장현 용산구청장과의 만남을 소개합니다.
1. For readers who may not be familiar, could you first introduce yourself and the Yongsan District?
Yongsan is a city that celebrates diversity, as it is home to people of many different nationalities and religions. Itaewon, in particular, is more known to foreigners than any other area in Seoul. It is a popular tourist destination and a place of great cultural and historical merit, as it holds the War Memorial and the National Museum of Korea. I’ve lived almost half of my life here in Yongsan and have worried over its issues together with the rest of the citizens. I am well aware of Yongsan’s value and the potential it holds as a truly global community.

용산구청장과의특별한만남 2. Of your accomplishments, which are you most proud of?
One of the first things I worked on was the scholarship program, so that none of our students have to give up their studies because of financial difficulties. We are also pouring a lot of effort into the preservation of history, and completed a memorial statue in honor of independence fighter Ryu Gwansun earlier this year.
2. 지금까지 하신 일 중에 가장 자랑스럽다고 생각하시는 일은?
100억 꿈나무 장학기금을 조성하여 750여 명의 학생들에게 장학금을 전달하는 성과를 거뒀습니다 -- 30만 용산가족이 수여하는 장학금이라는 데서 의미가 크죠. 교육사업과 함께 역사에 많은 관심을 가지고 있습니다 -- 특히 올해는 광복 70주년이 되는 해로, 용산구민의 정성을 모아 유관순 열사의 추모비를 세웠다는 것에 뿌듯함을 느낍니다.
3. What are some of the less well known benefits for Yongsan citizens, particularly for the foreign residents?
A Yongsan touring program is offered every Friday from 2 pm for free. We’ve also created and distributed a food hygiene guide for foreign businesses, offered in English, Chinese, Arabic, and Japanese. The Global Village Center would be a great resource to use if you wish to receive more information regarding the benefits.
3. 아직은 잘 알려지지 않은 구민을 위한 혜택, 특별히 외국인 구민을 위해 어떠한 혜택이 있는지.
용산의 숨겨진 매력을 알리기 위해 ‘해설이 있는 용산문화 탐방’이 매주 금요일 오후 2시부터 진행되며, 무료로 참여할 수 있습니다. 또한 외국인 영업자를 위해 영어ㆍ중국어ㆍ아랍어ㆍ일본어로 <외국인 전용 식품위생 가이드>를 제작, 배포했습니다. 그 밖에도 글로벌빌리지센터를 통해 다양한 정보와 혜택을 제공받을 수 있습니다.
4. Places all around Itaewon and Gyeongnidan are rapidly being developed into shopping districts. What are your thoughts on this issue?
Even just about 10 years ago, the general perception of the area was that it was dangerous. It has now become a unique and popular destination, and I think positively of that. It is my dream to make what is now the antique furniture road the Montmartre of Seoul. I would like to see it become a place where visitors can freely wander, shop, celebrate art, and simply enjoy themselves.
4. 이태원, 경리단 주변 및 해방촌이 급격하게 주택에서 상가로 변하고 있는데 어떻게 생각하는지. 물론 장단점이 많죠?
10여 년 전만 해도 이태원, 경리단, 해방촌이라고 하면 위험하다는 인식이 많았습니다. 특색 있는 상가들이 들어서면서 사람들의 발길이 늘어나고, 밝고 역동적인 이미지가 형성되었다는 데서 긍정적으로 생각합니다. 지금의 앤티크 가구 거리가 한국의 몽마르트가 되었으면 하는 마음으로, 사람들이 자유롭게 걸어 다니며 예술을 즐길수 있는 멋진 곳을 만드는 것이 저의 바람입니다.

5. What are some of the things you are doing to remedy the various parking issues in Itaewon?
We consider the parking problems to be one of the most pressing issues and are currently working on the construction of a parking lot. It will comprise four aboveground levels and two basement levels, holding up to 250 vehicles and 17 coaches in total. We hope that many of the parking issues will be resolved upon the completion of this project.
5. 주차 문제는 어떤 방안을 검토하고 계신가요?
교통난과 주차 문제를 해결하는 것을 가장 시급한 과제로 생각하고 있습니다. 내년 완공을 목표로 공영주차장을 건립 중에 있으며, 지하 2층, 지상 4층 주차 복합시설로 대형 버스 17대를 비롯하여 총 250여 대를 주차할 수 있어 이 일대 주차난 해소에 많은 도움이 될 것으로 예상됩니다.
6. Besides the already popular Haebangchon, Gyeongnidan, and Central Itaewon, is there a destination you would like to recommend?
I would like to suggest the Hyochang Park. It is a place of great historical value and contains the family shrines of several important figures in Korean history. We are working on the construction of a park square to celebrate the 70th independence anniversary this year.
6. 용산구의 대표 거리인 해방촌, 경리단길, 이태원 중심가 외에도 추천하고 싶은 동네가 있다면.
애국선열들의 정신을 가장 가까이에서 느낄 수 있는 효창동에 위치한 효창공원을 추천합니다 – 조국 독립을 위해 목숨을 바친 한국의 많은 영웅들의 가묘가 있는 유서 깊은 공원으로, 특별히 광복 70 주년을 맞아 태극기광장과 무궁화 동산으로 ‘광복 70주년 기념광장’을 조성하고 있습니다.

The highlight is probably our Yongsan Global Village Festival. We’ve had about 730,000 visitors last time and about a million this time. The General Nami Shrine Festival is also noteworthy, as it celebrates the legacy of General Nami with an impressive going-to-war ceremony.
7. 매해 개최되는 용산구의 특별한 행사들을 소개해주세요.
하이라이트는 매년 10월에 개최되는 ‘이태원지구촌 축제’가 아닐까 싶습니다 – 지난해 73만 명에 이어 올해도 100만여 명의 국내외 관광객들이 다녀갔습니다. 11월 9일부터 열리는 남이장군사당제도 용산구의 대표적 향토문화축제입니다.

I would sincerely like to see more people making use of the great resources we offer. We’re pouring a lot of effort into making Yongsan a better place, and we want to make sure that we’re doing what actually needs to be done.

Celebrating the Release of Combat Zone 2.0 with Bill Miller The man behind the recipes for some of Itaewon’s most loved craft beers sat down with Chip’s Maps to tell us about his newest beer recipe release, the Combat Zone 2.0 – Bill came to Korea in 2006 after a six year stint in Hawaii, where he first developed a liking for craft beer. Bourbon Barrel Aged Mocha Stout 5.4% -The Hand & Malt Brewing Co. Aroma: The first sniff is dominated by bourbon, followed by a medley of vanilla, booze, oak, dark chocolate, black cherries, and a subtle hint of smoke. Appearance: Deep dark brown to jet black, with a subtle mahogany head lingering on the sides of the glass. Flavor: A hint of bourbon with some vanilla, dark cherry, and a sherry like oak follow-through. The balance is clearly tilted to the malt, as it should be. Mouthfeel: Lightly carbonated and light bodied with a subtle warmth. Smooth, creamy, and slightly slick. Overall Impression: This beer provides another glimpse into the future of Korean beers. It’s a bit lighter and easier to drink than your typical massive barrel aged Russian Imperial Stouts, but for an intro to barrel aged beers the shoe fits.
