While the Common Room might want to be known for their great selection of beers and delicious deep dish pizza, their interior is what’s been making waves. Visitors should try The Common Room’s near eccentric brands of brew that are unavailable at most bars, and the staff is more than friendly enough to talk visitors through their decisions. From brie to gouda, the friendly faces behind the counter were helpful enough to stage and populate the plate of any get-together their patrons had in mind. The store has slowly blossomed into something more with a wider selection of meats and wines to complement the stocks of cheese. The selection of cheeses has nearly doubled with a notable increase in sauces and crackers which are unavailable at regular markets and stores. Korean food shows have been continuously touring the alleys of Itaewon on their quest to revitalize the banner print industry with a new stop, Bonny’s Pizza Pub. Filming just wrapped up and the Gourmet Road episode will be broadcasted in early February (and uploaded to YouTube soon after). Jeong Jeon-ha and the crew were busy munching down on everything from the pepperoni to the Hawaiian with the Braai Republic-inspired Conquistador rounding out the lineup. Chef Jin-wook of Peppino Peppino recently completed their second season called Discover the Taste of Italy, which offered Seoulites a taste of authentic Italian flavors. Twenty-seven year old Chef Gino has been diligently delivering these experiences to the table— with Roman oval-shaped pizzas and beautiful pastas—using his keen passion for Italian cuisine which he has cultivated during the last four years of his career. Chef Gino’s interest in Italian cuisine began with his position at Molto, a reputable Italian restaurant in Shinsa, and he continued to refine his skills at Itaewon’s Sortinos as head chef. He also travelled to Italy to study the cuisine first hand at ALMA, one of the world’s leading training centers. In Italy he gained practical training in Piedmont and Sicily, Italy’s northern and southern regions, where he learned how to prepare different styles of Italian cuisine. The menu at Peppino mainly consists of Sicilian cuisine, which uses many nuts, herbs and spices. And Chef Gino doesn’t shy away from preparing fragrant dishes with bold, aromatic flavors. Although the cream or rosé pastas are available for the unadventurous, Chef Gino shares his passion for the delicious, unique flavors of Sicilian cuisine. THE LOCAL BAND FEATURE CONTENTS
The indie folk rock band from Cheonan has been hitting the road with a few recent trips to Seoul and making stops at Rocky Mountain Tavern and Thunderhorse Tavern. Formed in March 2013, the current lineup consists of Ben Tiner on guitar and vocal, Wynn Arellano on bass, Benjamin March on percussions (sometimes guitar), Karyn Harding bringing more vocals, and Chris Denny on the drums. The indie scene has been buzzing with Colin Phils taking a good chunk of the attention. While the scene is saturated with heavy rock or alternative bands, Colin Phils has been strumming a steady stream of indie folk reminiscent of a time when everyone wasn’t sick and tired of listening to Jason Mraz. See them live at the Thunderhorse Tavern on February 27th at 10 pm. Don’t forget to get there early for Karyn Harding’s opening joke; it’s a killer. Mocha Stout 5%-Hand & Malt Brewing Co. Aroma: With the initial sniff I get some chocolate fudge which quickly changes to cocoa notes reminiscent of bakers chocolate followed by molasses and a hint of anise. Appearance: Dark chocolate with a subtle walnut colored head that’s quick to dissipate. Flavor: Baker’s chocolate, anise, and a hint of vanilla with molasses on the follow through that sticks to the sides of the tongue. There is also an undeniable sassafras note that comes as a welcomed surprise. The hop presence is only noticeable in the balance with the flavor appropriately being dominated by the malt and yeast. Mouthfeel: A slightly grainy, astringent flavor derived from the dark malts. Low to medium light body with a dry finish. Overall Impression: The Mocha in the name is present from the initial sniff to the prominent follow through. There is also a certain earthiness that brings to mind an adult version of Root Beer with a lovely addition of cocoa nibs which reminds me of an A&W Root Beer Float from back in the day which I am now craving.
