‘IL GATTINO’ REBORN AS THE FAT CAT

Kevin Cyr, of Chili King fame, will be joining the crew at, the formerly, Il Gattino. A grand opening for the freshly dubbed Fat Cat is tentatively scheduled for mid-April. The change in name is especially accurate as Fat Cat will be dropping pastas from the menu. In exchange, there will be a renewed focus on sandwiches and smoked meats. New menu items will include smoked rotisserie chicken, ribs, barbecue, pulled pork, and an expanded brunch menu. Beyond the food menu, Fat Cat will also be sporting a new expanded pet-friendly patio along with a choice selection of draft beers.

MEET THE OWNER CONTENTS While Itaewon goes through rapid transformations, a few bars have stood the test of time and provided a home away from home for many expats living in Korea. Rocky Mountain Tavern (RMT) is among them along with Hollywood Grill, Gecko’s, and the former 3 Alley Pub. Ten and a half years ago, Tyler Deuling and a couple of his buddies jumped at the opportunity to open up a bar. Hailing from Canada, he met his partners through hockey and together they decided to open up a North American sports bar. After three months they relocated to RMT's current, larger, two-floor space. of Rocky Mountain RMT was founded on the simple idea of creating a place for expats to hang out and enjoy a beer with friends. One of the best moments at RMT, as Tyler recalls, was the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver. The final game between Canada and the US was being played live on the screens at 5 am on a Monday. “We were jam-packed from 11 pm on Sunday. You couldn’t get through the door. The atmosphere was absolutely crazy... People couldn’t get to the bar, and people were handing back drinks. Both teams went to overtime, and when Canada scored, this place went crazy.”

As Itaewon evolves and transforms, it inspires Tyler to change the menu up at the casual restaurant on their first floor, as well as host live music, comedy events, and parties on their 2nd floor to keep guests engaged. Canadian brewer Mission Springs has been a great source of beer since they opened in 1995. They specialize in a wide variety of beers with a wide variety of names sure to pique anyone’s interest. This month’s drink slot goes to the 2014 Canadian Brewing Award’s gold medalist, the Trailblazer Pilsner. A light color is a good sign of things to come as the Trailblazer is a traditional pilsner; no hops here but a light citrus and mild flavor that make for a smooth drink. The malt flavor hits strongest after the initial crisp bite and leaves with a neutral tone, perfect for another sip. You can grab a glass at the Springs Taphouse in Itaewon or Gyeongnidan just in time for warmer weather.

캐나다 스타일의 맥주양조집 Mission Springs는 1995년 오픈 이후 좋은 재료의 맥주를 제공하고 있습 니다. 그들은 여러가지 맥주를 연구하고 누구나 흥미롭게 생각할 맥주 이름을 지었습니다. 이달의 맥주는 2014년 캐나다 맥주 어워즈에서 금메달을 차지한 트레블레이저 필스너입니다. 밝은 색깔을 띄는 건 트레블레이저가 전 통적인 필스너 맥주라는 걸 알려주는 좋은 색깔입니다. 쓴 맛은 없지만 가벼운 씨트러스와 약한 풍미가 부드러 운 맥주로 만들어 줍니다. 한 모금 마신 뒤에 느껴지는 맥아는 강하고 잔잔히 남아 한 모금을 더 마시게 합니다. 따듯해지는 날씨에 이태원 또는 경리단길에 있는 스프링즈 탭하우스에서 맥주 한잔 즐겨보세요.

BEER OF THE MONTH

Elise - BBB Brewing Co. Aroma: The initial whiff after the pour has some strong tropical fruit notes: mango, papaya, and melon. It reminded me of a lovely, tropical concoction I once drank in Mexico. Then I was hit with the malt which added a nice, subtle biscuity note.

Appearance: A hazy, light orange hue with a subtle white head that hangs on just long enough to let you know it was there.

Flavor: Up front I get mango and papaya. The 37 IBUs become present on the sides of the tongue while on the follow through the malt lends some residual honey flavored sweetness which provides a good balance.

Mouthfeel: Very light up front with a somewhat heavy follow through which equals, you guessed it, a full bodied mid-pallet. Moderate carbonation.

Overall Impression: A very well balanced, refreshing, tropical interpretation of an American Pale Ale. The 37 IBU’s are balanced nicely by the sweet malt and the follow through leaves you ready for more.

It’s a slightly heavier version of an APA with a proper ABV at 5.3%; anything below 5 gets put into a different category in my mind. Well done.
