YONGSAN NEWS Shenanigans Shenanigans, started by an Irishman and a Korean-American, has established itself as a popular nightlife destination for expats in Itaewon. This month, the fun and casual bar has added two new items to their menu, which is separated into two sections -- Grub and Finger Grub. Under the Finger Grub section, priced at W9,000, you’ll find Chips and Curry – potato wedges smothered in a mild Indian curry sauce. Their other new menu item, Chicken Tikka Masala Skewers with vegetables and a house salad, falls under their Grub section for W11,000. Glasses of flavored soju and generic beer seem to be overflowing in Korea, but when it comes to single malt scotch, the selections are few and far between. When it is available, a few glasses will run you a week’s worth of groceries. Luckily, this area has a few bars with well stocked and reasonably priced selections. 싱글몰트스카치 BURN IN HAL
Not only is it the only cigar bar in the area, Burn also happens to have the largest selection of single malt scotch, with over 85 varieties. With their impressive selection, it’s not surprising that Burn stocks some rare finds. The Yamazaki 12 is now off the market but you can find cases of it at Burn, as well as the even more illusive Yamazaki Distillery Reserve. The limited edition Port Ellen 34, composed of rare malts from American and European oak casks that were filled in 1978, is the oldest release to come from the Port Ellen distillery (Est. 1825). Their rarest find, marked ‘rare’ on the menu, is the Clynelish filled. Rare finds aside, you don’t need to fork over your rent money to enjoy single malt scotch at Burn. Their best seller, the Oban 14, is priced 40% lower than their competitors’, and the Talisker 10, despite import prices having doubled, is priced at only W165,000 a bottle and W12,000 a glass. Those looking for their favorite bottle of reasonably priced single malt scotch, can be sure that Burn will have it. While it is well-loved for its excellent selection of craft beers, Oak & Barley also offers over 14 different single malts with popular and rare finds alike. Their popular single malts include the Oban 14, Glenlivet 18, and the Glenmorangie 18, along with the Glenmorangie La Santa 12 which has been aged for ten years in an oak cask and two years in a sherry cask. This impressive collection continues on with the Laphroaig 18 from the Isle of Islay and the Craggenmore 12, which have all been popular amongst the customers. Oak and Barley also has new arrivals coming often, and they are able to order special items for customers upon request – all things considered, there is something for everyone in this large selection of scotch whiskies. If you’re interested in their scotch, you’ll find it worthwhile to visit them on a Tuesday night, as they’ll be offering discounts on all single malts and whiskies. Even without the discounts, however, you will find their prices to be incredibly reasonable, as they range in general from W8,000 to W19,000. Craftworks Taphouse & Bistro, located in Gyeongnidan, was integral to starting the domestic craft brew craze when it opened in 2010. With their craft beers, great appetizers, and brunch menu, it didn’t take long for them to become a popular spot amongst both Koreans and expats. Although they may be known for their great-tasting selection of Korean-crafted, unpasteurized microbrews, Craftworks also boasts an impressive selection of 22 scotch whiskies. With each single malt order, you can expect an ounce of scotch in your glass. Their rare find is the Auchentosan 12, a Japanese scotch whisky that is now off the market much like the Yamazaki. If you want to try it, you might want to hurry because their bottle is only three quarters full. Their most popular whisky is the Macallan 12, as the taste appeals to a broader audience. Recently, customers have also been frequently ordering the Laphroaig Quarter Cask and the Balvenie Doublewood. Suji’s Chef Presents New Menu This October marks Chef Park Young-bin’s sixth year at Suji’s. While he was reluctant to pursue anything other than Italian food before his brother who worked at Suji’s suggested that he try something else, he decided to start as Suji’s chef in the hopes of learning more about Western cuisine. Chef Park soon found himself growing fond of being able to experiment with various kinds of foods, and has constantly strived to launch new menu items at least every 3-4 months.
