There’s something supremely satisfying about having the option of taking beers home or drinking them at the liquor store. Korea’s lax policies regarding public intoxication aside, The Hidden Cellar presents a whole new option. While the sign might say liquor store, the seating and friendly environment is very welcoming and begs an hour of your time. With over 60 different beers, a wall of wines and spirits, and a walk-in fridge along with custom orders, The Hidden Cellar has something for everyone. The interior has got a shabby chic sense of décor with bar seating and hollowed out barrels for gravitas. One of the main attractions is the barrel of wine which patrons can use to bottle and cork their own wine. Interestingly, the bottles don’t always get very far and sometimes are finished soon after being corked. While they don’t offer any food in-house, they do accept deliveries from various restaurants around the area including Bonny’s Pizza who’ll make the trip down with the pie of your choice. All of the drinks are priced at liquor store prices with a 15% discount for any combination of six pack beers. It’s the perfect place to have a beer and then carry home its five friends for later. Dracula’s Lounge, located just up the hill in Haebangchon, has brought Romanian food to Seoul. Located just before Phillies, it’s a short walk down a dimly lit stairwell before you run into the main man himself. The food is great with a large variety that is familiar enough to make ordering a plate a short gastronomic adventure. The current customer standout is the Paprikash, a chicken stew with paprika served with flour dumplings. The interior is decorated with paintings, photos, and mugs of the vampire himself; it’s one part classy decor and one part Halloween which is great year round. 2. ENERGY CONSERVATION DRIVE IN YONGSAN
“Energy Conservation Drive Seoul” is a campaign aimed at reducing energy usage for a greener Korea. Yongsan-gu will be participating in this drive by shutting off the lights of public facilities, street lights, and public zones from 8 pm to 9 pm on the 22nd of every month. Residents are also encouraged to join the energy conservation drive.

용산소식 3. CHILBO CRAFT CLASS AT ITAEWON GLOBAL VILLAGE CENTER
The Itaewon Global Village Center will be hosting a Chilbo craft class where attendees will be able to make a brooch using Chilbo. Chilbo means “seven treasures” and was used to make royal ornaments. It is similar to enameling. Participants will be able to put glaze on gold, silver, lapis, crystal, coral, agate, and pearls. 4. BEYOND IMPRESSIONISM: MASTERPIECES FROM THE MUSÉE D’ORSAY
The National Museum of Korea will be displaying over 170 pieces of art from the Impressionist movement that displays the shift in European art during the late nineteenth and early twentieth century. Photographs, sculptures, drawings, and crafts from artists such as Vincent van Gogh, Paul Gauguin, Claude Monet and Henri Rousseau will be on display. The exhibition will be available until the end of August in the Special Exhibition Gallery of the museum. Hours are from 9 am to 6 pm on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays and from 9 am to 9 pm on Wednesdays and Saturdays. Holidays hours are from 9 am to 7 pm. Upper Deck
The newest sports bar to enter the scene in Gyeongridan is the American inspired Upper Deck. The bar is decked out with sports apparel from boxing gloves to jerseys giving it an immersive athletic feel. Topped off with a great menu of food, including this month’s spotlighted “Inside Out,” Upper Deck is a great place to watch a game with friends. As one of the largest bars in Gyeongridan, Upper Deck has two floors worth of seating and enough big screen TV’s to ensure that everyone catches every fumble, card, blocked shot and shank. The best seats in the house are the balcony seats; with fresh air and views of multiple screens, they’re worth arriving early. As one of the few American bars on the list, it’s a good bet that they won’t be airing a rugby match in favor of an NBA game. Located in the middle of Haebangchon, Bonny’s Pizza Pub is great for watching the game while munching on some pizza and drinking a few beers with friends. Like the name suggests, it’s all about pizza here and they’ve got 14 different varieties of thin and crispy pizzas to satisfy anyone. Seating is limited and while Bonny’s has great food and drinks, it isn’t particularly large. It’s hard to get seats on a busy night, but just about everyone is guaranteed a great view of the game. Vanita Swart of Twiga
In South Africa, Vanita Swart worked as a waiter, bartender and floor manager at a steakhouse. It wasn’t just cooking that she learned, but management and the overall experience of running a business. Her newest venture, Twiga (Swahili for ‘giraffe’), sits five stories above the street nestled inside the streets of Itaewon. Within two months, early reviews for the Bobotie (Cape Malay curry baked into minced meat) has been great and patrons are absolutely over the moon for her cheesecake. As a rule, Vanita refuses to make compromises to the quality and substance of her dishes. This means that she uses only organic foods, never freezes her meats, and (most importantly) uses real cream cheese in her cheesecakes. It is difficult not be enchanted with the result of Vanita’s hard work. Twiga acquaints itself less like a formal restaurant or bar and more like the open dining room of a close friend. The tables are presented with an elegant chic accentuated by animal print table cloths, light colors, and small crafted giraffe figures; products of Vanita’s attention to detail. And after the plates and glasses are put away, it’s that attention to detail that’s sure to keep patrons thinking about a return trip. Although she’d been cooking all her life, Chef Row didn’t start her professional career until 2008 during a stay in Japan. It was there that a stint as a barista led to a whirlwind of work leading to her current status as caterer and entrepreneur of culinary design. For the recently opened “Pet Sounds,” Chef Row designed four main dishes meant to serve as finger food or small meals in a pinch. More than that, they take traditional and familiar dishes with new designs and flavors. The Red Hot Chili Beefs presents an interesting and new take on nachos by replacing chips with fried dumpling wraps. Similarly, the Meat Loaf Baguette, Thom Yorky Sausages, and Big Balls bring a new flavor to recognizable dishes. While still in the early stages of her career, Chef Row is bringing new taste to the culinary scene in Seoul with her forays at “Pet Sounds” and elsewhere through her catering group “It Table.” It’ll be interesting to see where she takes it from here, but for now “Pet Sounds” offers a prime example of how pub grub should be served. 1. Can you tell us about Used Cassettes; how would you describe your sound? Used Cassettes was formed four years ago in Seoul, South Korea. [There’s] Canadian members Matt Spence and Pat Walsh, South African Ollie Walker and from the mean streets of Detroit, Danny Arens.
2. Tell us about getting signed to Magic Strawberry and what that's been like for you. Signing with Magic Strawberry came after our producer, BA Wheeler, introduced us to BK! at AB Room who mastered our album “Users.” He liked our sound and sent it off to Magic Strawberry for them to take a listen. Its a very tight knit family there and that is a similar vibe to what we have in Used Cassettes so we think that it is going to be a perfect fit for both parties. 3. Where can we catch your shows? Anyway, they left me there and I was not at all happy about it! These other dogs were pushy and rude. I bided my time until just the right moment and then I bolted out of the gate as some nice woman held it open for me. I ran straight home. An hour or so later, my human gets back all sweaty and I ran out to say, “Bark!”. Crazy guy snaps me up and starts hugging me like he thought I was dead or something. Then he says, “ You know Itaewon so well, I’m making you our official guide!” Then they stuck my picture here and now I teach all of you how to have fun in this place with all the foreign people. Fun, huh?

Bulmer’s Apple Cider has been around since the 1930’s, though thankfully it doesn’t taste like it. Originally an Irish recipe, Bulmer’s has a soft beer flavor reminiscent of lighter ales with a light apple aftertaste; less like Sprite and more like traditional apple cider. While’s Bulmer’s has more than a few flavors available, the one you’ll find in Itaewon is likely to be their most popular apple flavor. With rising temperatures and the humidity being what it is, Bulmer’s is a great departure from everyone’s regular palate of lagers and pale ales. And while cider isn’t exactly what everyone is after, it’s hard to argue with how nice it is during the summer. Bulmer’s is widely available throughout the bars in Itaewon and it won’t be hard to find a bottle to suit your tastes. Bulmer’s Apple Cider는 1930년대 부터 나왔지만, 맛은 지금과는 달랐습니다. 오리지날 아이리쉬 레시피에 따르면 Bulmer’s 의 끝맛은 가벼운 사과맛으로 부드러운 향의 맥주입니다. Bulmer’s는 조금 더 많은 향을 가지고 있으며, 이태원에서 가장 쉽게 찾으실 수 있는 것은 사과 향 입니다. 온도가 올라가고 습도가 올라가면서 Bulmer’s 는 페일 에일과 보통이 라거로 부터의 일탈에 도움을 줄 것입니다. 그리고 아마 Bulmer’s 가 얼마나 여름에 좋은 맥주인지에 대해서 논쟁하기란 정말 어려울 것입니다!
