In the past five years, she has raised more than $130,000 to place nine dogs that are helping children and adults conquer the challenges of paralysis, Cerebral Palsy, and PTSD. As always this time of year reminds us of how lucky we are to work and play with our dogs, Junior, Jake and Honey. As Barketing Officer’s for FIDO Friendly, they have the opportunity to sniff out properties for purposes of review and earlier this year, Honey was ensconced at the Hilton Los Angeles/Universal City property the night before we were guests on the Hallmark Channel’s Home & Family show to promote our 11th Annual Cross-country Pet Adoption Tour, Get Your Licks on Route 66®. C H R I S T M A S AT T H E C A S T L E The iconic Fairmont Banff Springs, tucked in the Canadian Rockies, celebrates Christmas at the Castle and welcomes you and Fido to join in the fun. The hotel’s Canine Ambassador, Bear, greets visitors and makes sure your dog is welcomed with a bed, bowl and treats. With the Christmas at the Castle package, you can also enjoy an in-room Christmas tree and, throughout the season, the resort is decked out in holiday style, a perfect backdrop for merry photos of your dog-friendly getaway. Winter fun includes snowy dog walks on the grounds of the “Castle in the Rockies” that has greeted guests for over 125 years. BIG APPLE FESTIVITIES All through The High Line Hotel, not a creature was stirring, not even a mouse—because the dog guests are tired after a day of holiday fun. This historic Manhattan hotel is located on Clement Clarke Moore’s 17th-century estate, the site where the author penned “Twas the Night Before Christmas.” The fun kicks off with a Christmas tree lighting on December 4 but the holiday spirit continues all month. Fetch a dog treat in the lobby on your way to the nearby Chelsea Waterside Dog the hotel bar that features non-alcoholic dog beer served in a travel bowl for you to take on your next adventure. The Seattle Barkery – A Treat Truck (and more!) for Dogs!

Urban Crush Winery dog Oliver

24 Fall/Winter 2019

F

Five years ago, the Fords had a simple idea which started with a quest to provide high-quality treats for dogs. Today their business has grown and is thriving!

OOD TRUCKS ARE ALL THE RAGE IN MANY AREAS ACROSS THE NATION, and Seattle, Washington, is no exception. It’s no surprise that these mobile

restaurants are such a hit – no matter what your culinary preference is, you are almost assured to find something to suit your palate. What you may not know is that if you visit or live in the Seattle area, there is a specialty food truck just for Fido! For five years, the Seattle Barkery has been providing upscale, high-quality treats for dogs with discerning taste.

By Penny Eims

The Seattle Barkery is the brain-child of owners, Ben and Dawn Ford, who came up with the idea after running a dog walking business in the area for several years. The couple liked to give special treats to their clients’ pets after walks and treks to the dog park, but they were disheartened that most of the treats marketed as “high quality” were actually from China, where there are few regulations, and little to no quality control.

as their own. Dawn tells FIDO Friendly, “some recipes were clear winners and some were not!” After nailing down the taste-test stand outs, the couple set up shop at a farmer’s market and realized that they were on to something big – their treats were a hit! The farmer’s market success inspired the Fords to venture into the dog food truck business. They outfitted a sky-blue 1968 Chevy van, dubbed Buster the Treat Truck, into a canine meals-on-wheels business and the rest, as they say, is history. Today, the Seattle Barkery operates Buster the Treat Truck, as well as a Treat Trailer that is permanently parked at Magnuson Off Leash Park, as well as a Treat Bar which is located inside of the Dogwood Play Park in North Seattle. This winter, the business is expanding to South Lake Union where a Seattle Barkery Treat Shop is scheduled to open on January 15, near a new, dog-friendly Amazon office building and a public dog park! Lucky pooches who visit the Seattle Barkery have a wide-variety of delicacies to choose from. Dawn tells FIDO Friendly that there are 12 recipes which are always available, and right now, the Bacon Pupcake, Chicken Hearts, and Pb Paw Cookie are in a three-way tie for being the most popu-

lar treats. Fidos fortunate enough to visit during the holidays can nosh on a seasonal treat, such as the Pumpkin Pup pies available at Thanksgiving, the Naughty Gingerbread Coal at Christmas, or the Apple Pup Pies which are available on Memorial Day. Four-legged customers from near and far visit the various Seattle Barkery sites, and some have made the gourmet treats part of their expected routine. Dawn tells FIDO Friendly, “We have a number of “regulars” and we LOVE to see them every week! We are a regular if not demanded stop after they play at the dog park!” Some pups are sneakier than others, Dawn explains, “We have had a number of hop-ons and thefts, but we always laugh, if they can figure out how to get on board and steal something to eat, they deserve it!” With a two to one ratio of dogs to kids in Seattle, and two passionate dog lovers at the helm, it’s no surprise that the Seattle Barkery has met with success in the area. Dawn says, “we love our doggos in the PNW!” ‹ PENNY EIMS is a Freelance writer who shares her love of dogs (and all animals!) on the Pet Rescue Report and Shelter Me TV.

Our favorite part of vacation was going to the beach. It’s so peaceful looking at the water and feeling the sand in our paws. There are all kinds of strange things in the sand and some of them move which really surprised me and I jumped about a foot, I think. All in all it was a great vacation and I hope I get to go again next year.

Instead, I concentrated on exercising our leg muscles as some of the approximately mile-long pathway involves stairs and slopes. Exploring the Peloponnese with Fido A journey to the mythical south of Greece. By Maria Himmich

HE PELOPONNESE IS THE LARGEST PENINSULA IN GREECE. It is connected to the mainland by the famous Corinth canal. This region is filled with sun-kissed

beaches, historical sites, vibrant cities, picturesque villages, snowcapped

mountains and olive tree fields. Indeed, Greece is not only about its famous islands. This Mediterranean country hides a lot of gems in the legendary Peloponnese. The most pleasing way to explore the Greek peninsula is by car, so I took a one-week road trip with my dog Shark and my two best friends in early summer. This destination is delightful in every season though, especially in fall. The Peloponnese hosts many significant archeological sites. Unfortunately, pets are not allowed inside them. Since I was traveling with my friends, we made arrangements to visit our favorite places in turn to stay with my dog outside. Among the must-see attractions figure Ancient Olympia, the birthplace of the Olympic Games, Mystras, a former Byzantine capital, and the Theatre of Epidavros, one of the best-preserved ancient Greek structures in the country. Surprisingly enough, one of the most impressive castles in Greece is Fidofriendly. Methoni Castle was built by the Venetians in the 13th century in the southwestern end of Peloponnese. The ruins are facing the pristine waters of the Mediterranean Sea. We all had a deep crush for this peaceful and fascinat-

ing fortress. About half an hour east, we accessed for free and with my dog into another Venetian Castle called Koroni. The view was spectacular! As we decided to explore the Peloponnese along the coast, we could relax on some of the most stunning beaches in Greece. Voidokilia, near the city of Pylos, is a nature’s masterpiece. The shore has a perfect shape of a semi-circle. Its lagoon features white sand, lush vegetation and a cliff. The atmosphere was magical at sunset. Another original beach offered us an unforgettable sight near the charming village of Gytheio. Indeed, Selinitsa has its own unsubmerged shipwreck called Dimitrios. There are many rumors about the ship′s origins and how it got stranded on the beach. By the way, in Greece, dogs are allowed on leash on every beach. They can swim only if nobody is bothered. The Peloponnese is also renowned for the fortified medieval town of Monemvasia. It is erected on the side of a dramatic rock just off the eastern coast and the exclusive access is via a causeway. Vaulted alleys, cobblestone streets, Byzantine churches and Venetian mansions compose a fairy tale scenery. Here time stands still. We enjoyed exquisite Greek dishes on the terrace of Taverna Matoula. Pets are not allowed inside eating places by law but most Greek restaurants have a lovely outdoor space. I use to ask the waiter if it is possible to The olive tree fields near Mystras.

sit with my dog out of politeness. Our road trip ended in the city of Nafplio, the first capital of the newly born Greek State between 1823 and 1834. Locals consider this stunning seaport town as the most romantic city in the country. We walked along Arvanitia promenade, with its view of the Argolic Gulf, and the picturesque bougainvillea clad lanes of the lively centre. Nafplio is around a two-hour drive from the airport of Athens.

The enchanting Peloponnese represents an underrated destination in Greece. It offers an off-the-beaten-path opportunity to immerse in Greek life far from popular islands. Plus, it was easy to find Fido-friendly accommodation. In a nutshell, it is a perfect getaway for humans with their dogs! ‹ MARIA HIMMICH is a travel blogger who explores the world with her dog Shark. She loves sharing her stories to inspire other people to take their dog along on vacation. After visiting Mauritius, Morocco, France and South America, they both currently live in Greece. The housesit had worked its usual magic of conjuring up unexpected moments and opportunities and I left there with a satisfying list of ‘firsts’: a Hell Garden; the witnessing of Buddhists releasing trapped birds into the skies; a greater understanding of Thailand and how it is changing rapidly in the 21st century and, perhaps most importantly, a remarkable ability to balance a 50cc scooter on a dusty road with two large pooch pods on the back. Traveling to the back of beyond I am a huge advocate of people going to new places – even if it just means finding a different coffee shop to adopt for a while. Familiarity is comforting, but we learn much more rapidly about ourselves and the world around us when placed in new situations. Housesitting is a wonderful way to start exploring new corners of the world. Homeowners provide local contacts, and houses can be viewed in advance over video chats. Looking after dogs and walking their familiar routes provides an easy way to settle into a routine and create a sense of purpose and belonging. Dogs are the finest non-judgemental buddies for travelers, too. There are no withering looks after a long morning spent in bed, and they will never tell anyone that a local museum packed with interesting artefacts never quite made it onto the day’s schedule. They can be cafe companions, hiking pals, and excellent partners for movie marathons. Housesitting provides the perfect opportunity to try on a new life for size, and reveal unexpected secrets of both ourselves and the world.

Doggy Gets a Day Out Field trip programs allow dogs needed time away from the shelter.

was developing kennel anxiety. An outing was just what this wanderer needed. And thanks to Doggy Day Out, he was able to enjoy one. Like many humans, canines need a change of pace. They require exercise, exploration and discovery with a variety of social interactions to keep them content. The monotony of a shelter can bring on restlessness, which can result in anxiety and bad behavior. Time away, even for a short spell, relieves these issues and can help dogs become more adoptable. For a solution, Stephanie Jackson, Foster Coordinator of Louisville Metro Animal Services started a day out program. Jackson was provided with ideas to initiate a strategy for official doggy excursions while taking a three-day training course through Maddie’s Fund® at the Austin Animal Center in Austin, Texas. She had been granted an apprenticeship for the course, which specifically covered the difficult challenges of medium to large adult dog fostering. The resulting field trip program proved successful and caught the attention of Mutual Rescue™. They asked Jackson to coordinate a Doggy Day Out toolkit for other interested shelters to facilitate their own versions. The toolkit offers practical advice, discusses common misconceptions and concerns that the organizations and interested parties may have. There are assorted templates of forms and waivers. DOGGY KENNEL vs. PET SITTER FOR HOLIDAY TRAVEL The holidays are arriving and we will be doing a lot of traveling. We have two young dogs, ages one and two. They get along great. Groups hosting events can invite Winston and Churchill to join the party (for up to one hour) as part of a $250 donation to a local Los Angeles animal shelter. stress relief to fellow employees. Her owner, Rusty Dahler, the Hilton Milwaukee’s “human” concierge, brings Millie with him to work Tuesday through Saturday – many guests book at the Hilton Milwaukee just to receive cuddles from Millie while visiting. Millie spends 40 hours a week working at the hotel – welcoming guests and playing with employees and visitors in the lobby, riding on luggage carts and assisting with deliveries, and visiting business and meeting attendees during conference breaks held at the hotel. Since arriving at the hotel, Millie has become a mini celebrity in Milwaukee, also participating in city parades and special events held at the hotel. In celebration of their lovable and huggable employee, the hotel also has Millie stuffed dogs for $10, Millie socks for $12 and pub sockets for $5. instagram.com/millieatthehilton

backpack full of supplies. Tabitha knows firsthand how service dogs can change lives. Diagnosed in fourth grade with a debilitating form of Muscular Dystrophy, she endured six surgeries yet still found herself struggling to physically navigate her middle school campus. She reluctantly began studying at home; a wheelchair seemed the next best option. All of that changed when her parents purchased Sunny, a German Shepherd and trained service dog. Tabitha was able to walk confidently into eighth grade holding tightly to Sunny’s harness. She resolved to help others gain their mobility and placed her first service dog with Mary, a 14-yearold who began walking without her arm braces and mother’s support, thanks to her golden retriever. “As I’ve faced the disabilities in my own life, I’ve discovered my ability to organize and motivate others,” says Tabitha. “I’ve learned the joy of offering hope and that as I reach out to help individuals, our strength is multiplied.” The Barron Prize was founded in 2001 by author T. A. Barron and was named for his mother, Gloria Barron. Each year’s 25 Barron Prize young heroes reflect the great diversity of America. They are female and male, urban and rural, and from various backgrounds. Many of them have focused on helping their communities and fellow beings; many others have focused on protecting the environment. “Nothing is more inspiring than stories about heroic people who have truly made a difference
