Mars mission in ‘Stars on Mars’

Ever since Amazon magnate Jeff Bezos’ trip into space last year, there has been plenty of speculation about the rise of space tourism and which celebrities would be among the first to achieve liftoff. Well, for those wondering what it might look like to take things a step further and host a star-studded reality show in space, Fox has got you covered. The new reality competition series, “Stars on Mars,” premieres Monday, June 5, on Fox.

Equal parts Bravo and Star Trek, “Stars on Mars” features Captain James T. Kirk himself, William Shatner (“Star Trek: The Original Series”). While not actually filmed in outer space (give that a few more years yet), the unscripted series follows a group of celebrities who must spend an entire summer on a simulated, Mars-like planet together.

The series opens with the aspiring cosmonauts suiting up and settling into their new space mission-worthy digs, where they’ll “live, eat, sleep, strategize, and bond with each other” (per Fox) over the course of the series. Constantly assigned tasks by mission control — manned by Shatner, of course — each famous person will need to compete in a series of challenges with the aim of “colonizing” their out-of-this-world surroundings.

Successfully completing those tasks will prove to be key, because there’s a “Survivor”-like element to this competition: each week, they’ll vote to eliminate one of their crewmates and send them “back to Earth” (or rather, back to real life) until just one remains.

There is a good mix of skills among the 12-person crew, including actors, athletes, public figures and philanthropists. Actors Ariel Winter (“Modern Family”), Tallulah Willis (“The Whole Ten Yards,” 2004) and Christopher Mintz-Plasse (“Superbad,” 2007), for example, will be joined by reality TV stars Porsha Williams Guobadia (“The Real Housewives of Atlanta”) and Tom Schwartz (“Vanderpump Rules”), as well as singer/songwriter Tinashe. Rounding out the more athletic side are Tour de France multi-champion Lance Armstrong, UFC champion Ronda Rousey, former Seattle Seahawk Marshawn Lynch, former NFL cornerback Richard Sherman and Olympic figure skater Adam Rippon. Comedian Natasha Leggero (“Another Period”) joins from a category of her very own.

In a news release, Fox executives laid out their hopes for the celebs on their “Martian” mission: “During their stay, they will be faced with authentic conditions that simulate life on Mars, and they must use their brains and brawn — or maybe just their stellar social skills — to outlast the competition and claim the title of ‘brightest star in the galaxy.’”

When the series was officially announced in April, Allison Wallach, President of Unscripted Programming at Fox Entertainment, stated, “The moment I heard the pitch for ‘Stars on Mars,’ I knew a show this bold, this big and this outlandish simply belonged on Fox. Watching celebrities take giant leaps out of their comfort zone and step into the unexpected will no doubt be truly transformational and comical. Throughout, we will learn a lot about these stars, and when you factor in William Shatner leading the charge from Mission Control, we have the makings of a show that’s ready for blast off.”

This “analog mission,” as NASA typically refers to these types of simulations, is filmed in the South Australian town of Coober Pedy, a red-sanded desert town north of Adelaide that is famous for its opals. And while each celebronaut voted “off the planet” during the competition does still need to return to the United States, there remains the small consolation that the flight home isn’t quite as long as that from actual Mars.

Produced by Fremantle-owned Eureka Productions, the unscripted show is the kind of lighter fare that’s perfect for summer viewing. As for Shatner, the “Star Trek” icon has remained synonymous with space exploration since the original series (or “TOS” to fans) debuted in 1966; as Mission Control in “Stars on Mars,” he’s expected to offer support to the celebrities and add a bit of levity to the competition.

In a case of life imitating art, in 2021, the then-90-year-old actor was able to boldly go where no person his age had gone before, when he and three fellow passengers blasted into space aboard a ship built by Jeff Bezos’ Blue Origin company.

In his recently released book “Boldly Go: Reflections on a Life of Awe and Wonder,” Shatner described the effects of gravitational forces, explaining that, “at two g’s, I tried to raise my arm, and could barley do so,” and “at three g’s, I felt my face being pushed down into my seat,” before experiencing the relief of weightlessness.

Presumably, the memory of that feeling still lingers on, considering Shatner’s words of wisdom to the “Stars on Mars” participants: “Thanks to lower gravity on Mars, you’ll weigh 62% less. Bad news: the air is unbreathable, so if you’re from LA, it’ll remind you of home.”

Swiatek looks to continue strong season at French Open

Going into the 2023 French Open, it’s clear that 21-year-old Iga Swiatek has taken the tennis world by storm, rewriting history and quickly establishing herself as a fan favorite.

Born May 31, 2001, in Warsaw, Poland, Swiatek’s first taste of Grand Slam success came in October 2020 when she won the prestigious French Open title. It wasn’t just the victory that was impressive — it was how she did it, and whom she did it against.

Entering the tournament, Swiatek was ranked No. 54. Using her aggressive style and fearless approach, she defeated world No. 19 Marketa Vondrousova in the opening round, and followed it up in the fourth round by defeating world No. 2 Simona Halep, who was on a 17-match winning streak and was favored to win the tournament. Reaching the final, Swiatek defeated No. 6 Sofia Kenin, becoming the first Polish player, male or female, to win a Grand Slam singles title, and the lowest-ranked singles champion in French Open history.

Coming off a successful 2021 campaign that saw her enter the top 15 for the first time (she finished the season seeded at No. 4), she reached the semifinals at both the 2022 Adelaide International and 2022 Australian Open before winning the next six tournaments in a row. She finished the season with a won-lost record of 67-9, making it the most wins in a single season since Serena Williams accomplished the feat in 2013.

In 2023, she continues to impress with her outstanding performances on the court. Having established herself as one of the top-ranked female players (and the clay-court queen), she won the WTA Qatar Open 500 in February, successfully defending her title against American Jessica Pegula in the final in straight sets.

With her latest title victory in Stuttgart coming on the heels of No. 2 Arnya Sabalenka, Swiatek continues to build a legacy that would take a lifetime for most. Q: Why is “9-1-1” moving from Fox to ABC? — John Staples, via e-mail

A: Primarily, it has to do with economics and how those might or might not benefit each network. Though the rescue drama starring Angela Bassett and Peter Krause has been high-rated for Fox, the cost of making it has become that much higher as it approaches its seventh season, which diminishes the financial returns from it. As is commonly known, revenue for broadcasters has lessened in the streaming era, placing the price of a making a series (no matter how successful it is) under that much more scrutiny. Also, Fox doesn’t own the show in the case of “9-1-1,” but ABC corporate cousin Disney does (via its 20th Television brand), signaling a synergy that gives the latter companies a vested interest in keeping the series going. Interestingly, Fox is continuing the spinoff “9-1-1: Lone Star,” but the financial aspects are different for that program with it being newer.

Gene Kelly and company are “Singin’ “ again

A legendary film that serves as a great musical and a tribute to Hollywood’s golden age, “Singin’ in the Rain” — which Turner Classic Movies presents Tuesday, June 6 — is an essential entry in the MGM catalog that never loses its sense of sheer fun, thanks in no small part to the appeal of a fabulous cast.

Teaming him with Debbie Reynolds and Donald O’Connor, the 1952 picture boasts Gene Kelly as a movie star making the transition from the silent era to “talkies” … and needing a singer to help him with that switch. Kelly also co-directed with Stanley Donen, and among the fabulous numbers is O’Connor’s genuine showstopper “Make ‘Em Laugh,” which he literally throws himself into without reservation. Rita Moreno had one of her earliest screen roles here.

Hit the pit: Pitmasters face off in Netflix competition

This summer, the stakes (and the steaks) are hotter than ever, as this fan-favorite cooking competition heads outside to hit the pit – the barbecue pit, that is – for Season 2 of “Barbecue Showdown,” now available to stream on Netflix.

Just in time for grilling season, hosts Lyric Lewis (“A.P. Bio”) and Rutledge Wood (“Lost in Transmission”) return to the showdown’s outdoor stage, inviting eight new chefs to compete for the title of American Barbecue Champion, in what Netflix calls a “fierce but friendly faceoff” between some of barbecue’s very best.

The competing backyard barbecue enthusiasts, smoking connoisseurs and pitmasters range in specialty and experience level but share one thing in common: they all practise the art of “manning the grill,” with skills honed sharper than a boning knife. Challenges cover a variety of different cooking styles, forcing the chefs out of their comfort zones as temperatures rise in more ways than one. Adding pressure to the cookers, each task must be completed within a time frame that slices into the normal amount of time required to prepare and cook each given

dish. There are also “surprise challenges,” interrupting the ever-present need for chefs to maintain their ideal grill temperature, a job necessary to produce an evenly smoked and evenly textured slab of meat.

The completed dishes are then presented to a panel of celebrity chef judges, including barbecue restaurateur Kevin “Big Kev” Bludso (“Diners, Drive-ins and Dives”) and seven-time barbecue champion Melissa Cookston (“Food Paradise”). Each episode, one chef is named “Star Pitmaster” by the judges, while another is eliminated from the game, narrowing the competition until only two remain for a flaming-hot grill-off featured in the finale.

Last season saw competitors cooking meals for 50 ravenous firefighters — choosing between exotic proteins in a dish featuring either iguana, raccoon or hare meat and creating epic, one-of-a-kind signature sandwiches. This second season features more unique challenges (and just as satisfying a winner), having been released just in time for the barbecue season on Sunday, May 28.

For a mouth-watering taste of well-done competition, both seasons of “Barbecue Showdown” are now available to stream on Netflix.

“Meet Me in St. Louis” (1944): is the setting – at least initially – for this classic mu sical about a family about to relocate to New York because of the patriarch’s new job. Garland and Margaret O’Brien’s adorable crooning of “Under the Bamboo Tree” is worth the figurative price of admission on its own.

“Easter Parade” (1948): Berlin is the engine that drives this picture … which naturally tends to resurface every April. Garland, Fred Astaire and Ann Miller star as entertainers, and entertaining, they certainly are.

“The Wizard of Oz” (1939): You can’t do this list without this film. When 20th Century Fox wouldn’t loan out Shirley Temple to play Dorothy, MGM called in its contract player Garland – and the rest is history, very literally. The fanciful fantasy remains a favorite of every generation.

“A Star Is Born” (1954): accomplished performances of Garland’s career marks this third screen version of a famous showbiz story, adding a musical element as the actress plays a rising talent whose career soars while that of the actor she loves (James Mason) enters a downward spiral. Among the great numbers is “The Man That Got Away.”
