The kids and parenting issue is one of my favourites of the year. Maybe it’s all the cool sustainable-crafted toys, clothes and baby bum creams that I get to scope out. Maybe it's the exploration that I love, of different perspectives on parenting and parenthood. And I’m always inspired by the entrepreneurial parents that I get to interview. I still often wonder how do they do it all, and still look so good? This year, what has struck me personally and most particularly has been exploring early education. With my little one entering pre-school, I’ve become fascinated with the methods of Dr. Maria Montessori. On my bedside table you’ll find her book, The Absorbent Mind. Beyond being a woman so far ahead of her time, in the early 1900’s, she touched on principles that are more relevant in today’s world than ever before. I love the principles of a holistic education. It’s the idea of offering our kids an environment where they can grow and be nourished physically, emotionally, socially, and spiritually. If we can focus on creating more peaceful children, it could change the world. Especially when we grown ups tend to focus so much on achievement and less on the joy of the moment. So, instead of getting all worked up about #stressfulSeptember this year (myself, included), take

A more organic way of Being time to consider the beauty and magic of the season. I hope that this issue can inspire you to take more time for fitness as a family (see page 53), introduce your little ones to the world of spices (page 60), and above all, put on your own oxygen mask first (read Desiree Nielsen’s article, Parent, feed thyself on page 45). As the colours change and the air cools down, allow yourself and your family a fresh start. Breathe deeply, feel the crunch of the golden leaves below your feet, take a big bite of a freshly-picked (organic) apple, and enjoy the space that you inhabit.

Their human right to play Play allows children to use their creativity while developing their imagination, and physical, cognitive, and emotional strength. In fact, play is so important to optimal child development that it has been recognized by the United Nations High Commission for Human Rights as the right of every child. Research from The Center on the Developing Child at Harvard University has shown that early parent-child relationships have powerful effects on children’s emotional wellbeing, and play offers an ideal opportunity for parents to fully engage with their children. Despite the benefits of spontaneous play, it has been noticeably reduced in favour of organized, achievement-oriented activities. But according to the Association for Childhood Education International, this is a mistake. Children’s sugar consumption around the globe The World Health Organization recommends a daily intake of roughly 50 grams of sugar for someone of normal weight. For children between the ages of 4 and 6 years old, that number drops to no more than 19 grams of sugar daily. Pennsylvania State University researchers found that the more added sugar children had in their diets—like a single can of soda that contains a whopping 39 grams of sugar—the less likely they were to eat the foods that contain healthy sugars such as grains, vegetables and fruits. Essentially putting them into a state of malnutrition, with kids eating to many calories, but not enough nutrients.

Said to cure every disease but death itself, Nigella sativa—more commonly known as black cumin seed—is one of the most revered medicinal seeds in history. It is no surprise then that black cumin seed, and black cumin seed oil have been used by practitioners of Ayurveda and Traditional Chinese Medicine for over 5000 years to treat an extensive list of mild to extreme health conditions. But in recent years, it has truly been put to the test with several

scientific studies confirming its long list of reported health benefits. Studies have found that black cumin seed has anti-asthmatic effects, and in some cases is more effective than conventional treatment. These same anti-inflammatory effects are helpful in relieving allergies and skin conditions such as eczema and psoriasis. Black cumin seeds are carminative, which means they aid in digestion and can help decrease gas, bloating, and stomach pain. It has been used as a remedy for intestinal parasites, and according to researchers from the University of Mississippi Medical Center it may even be an alternative to chemotherapy as it has also been shown to

inhibit the growth of colon cancer cells with no negative side effects. A study from the University of Ohio and two separate Malaysian studies came to the same conclusion: black cumin could kill cancer cells. It suggests that Thymoquinone, a key compound found in black cumin seed, helps to induce cell death in leukemia cells, breast cancer cells, brain tumour cells, pancreatic cancer, cervical cancer, and even oral cancer cells as well as cavity forming bacteria. We chatted with Nadin Elkhalil, Head Directress and founder of the Peregrine House School. How did you learn about the Montessori Method? NE: I grew up with a passion for performing arts; from a young age I was prancing around the house pretending to be Fräulein Maria from The Sound of Music. So needless to say my early education was a result of theatre and the arts. But it wasn’t until 2004—in my third year of Theatre—that a family friend introduced me to

Before I knew it, I was completing the Association Montessori International assistant course in Vancouver, and then moving to Toronto to complete the Primary Teacher AMI course. Tell us about your thoughts on holistic education? NE: Holistic education is a way of life. Our society is collaborative; it’s all about being a part of a community. Neuroscience has proven that we are “hard wired” to connect with others;



2 I ended up teaching myself AutoCAD over a few years and designed a floor plan that followed Dr. Montessori’s findings. I researched environmentally safe materials for children. I promised myself in one year I was going to find the right property and build a Sprout Space for my program. I applied and was successful in obtaining a grant from the Ministry of Children and Family Development to make this vision of mine happen. I was also able to obtain another grant that allowed me to create Peregrine’s Infant House, opening Winter 2017.

3 and we need education that reflects that. Children at Peregrine are given the opportunity to connect with their peers, work together in a community, be heard, and understand the world around them one day at a time. Education needs to create lasting impressions through peaceful education.

How did Dr. Montessori’s discoveries influence the design of your space? NE: Montessori always spoke of the “prepared environment” being the vital piece to the child’s whole development. This prepared environment had to be beautiful, with natural daylight and direct contact to the outdoors. Children were to be surrounded by real objects, nature and mathematically correct

How did you turn this idea of a “prepared environment” into reality? NE: In 2012, I had come across the Sprout Space Modular that was designed by Perkins+Will in Washington DC. I was so happy to see what architect Allen Post had created. He has worked with educators from around the world, creating healthy environments for children.

What’s your vision for the future? NE: As a mother of two, I understand the importance of providing a safe and nurturing learning environment—rich with opportunity. My vision is to build a school community serving everyone from one-year-olds to high school aged students, with a reputation as a place where students thrive in their intellectual, emotional and social pursuits. My ultimate goal of creating a healthy sustainable and flexible environment has just begun and I am excited to finally bring this dream to reality. At the end of the day, my inspiration—the child—has brought me to where I am today. The children deserve only the best, and I hope this motivates others to build healthy environments for our children, and our future. f

When Marie-Josée Richer and Alon Farber set out to create Prana in 2005 they wanted two things: for their nuts, seeds, dried fruits, trail mixes, and superfoods to taste delicious, and to be certified organic. And in the last eleven years they have refused to compromise on their beliefs to create an amazing product while making positive and meaningful changes to the planet. Prana’s mantra is “If you are what you eat, then we must be awesome!”—We couldn’t agree more.

Have you always been interested in food? MR: I was always very interested in the body and mind, simple health and doing what the body wants. Even at eight years old, I was making vegetarian meals for the whole family. So did you know you were eventually going to be involved in the food industry? MR: No, I was raised with a very conditioned way of thinking that I would go to university, get married, get a house, have a couple of kids and that’s it. I was studying biochemistry and physiotherapy. But then I started doing yoga and I felt so complete. I thought, “I want to do this all day.” So I picked up and moved to Asia, and was doing yoga and meditating; and I started meeting all these amazing people who were totally off the grid, living in this different and inspiring way. I really followed my heart, and ended up opening a vegan restaurant just north of Goa. The restaurant was a lot of fun and then I met a man—now my husband—at a Tai Chi class there. We were both travellers that had this vision about having an impact on food culture and on the planet. Together we moved back to

Canada and we began the early stages of what would become Prana. Was that an easy transition? MR: Definitely not! When we came back to Canada in 2005 our master plan was to spend a couple of months, make a bunch of money, and then go back to Goa and open a health centre. When we came back to Canada though we were like, “oh god, we’re so poor!” We moved in with my mom and started Prana with not even ten thousand dollars in the bank. For the first three or four years we really experimented. Learning where the gaps were and where we could have more of an impact. We were a business that was about more than making a profit, it was very mission driven, about making organics more accessible and bringing it to the masses.

We have found amazing people who can really carry the mission. Especially with children, we have to have outstanding people around us. It’s give and take though. When you do good you receive good. I feel very fortunate.

How has Prana grown and changed since then? MR: We started out as two employees—my husband and I. And now we have 65 employees. We’re definitely growing, but we’re growing organically, always thinking about our social and environmental impact. We’re changing the world one nut at a time, but it’s a marathon, not a sprint.

Speaking of children, you did all of this while raising three boys! MR: Initially I was working seven days a week, and then I became pregnant and was like “I need at least a Sunday to relax!” I was a bit of a workaholic. I remember interviewing people from home while breastfeeding, I thought “if they can’t handle this, they aren’t for us!” But having children really brought

me to a more balanced life. I realized what my priorities were and that life isn’t all about work. To be a mom and an entrepreneur is an everyday challenge. But I feel this energy that comes from it. You gain a lot when you put your heart on the table and take risks. Shit happens, but I wouldn’t do it any other way. What’s your best advice for budding entrepreneurs? MR: Have no fear. When I was travelling alone I had this mindset of “what’s the worst that can happen?” You have to be okay with being vulnerable. Just do it. Worst case you’re going to learn from it. Or maybe that’s the best case, you learn and grow.

What kind of culture do you have at the Prana offices? MR: No micromanaging, lots of liberty and ownership. I don’t want people to feel like to make a decision they have to put it upwards. We’re also very focused on transparency. All of our books are open. We value authenticity, caring, integrity, and a holistic mindset. We want employees to be able to take a sabbatical. There’s no clock in, clock out kind of thing, I trust our people to obtain the goals they set for themselves. And fun! We spend 40 hours a week here; it’s got to be fun! You’ve created a really loyal following. What about Prana resonates with consumers?

MR: I really believe its authenticity. Walking the talk. Integrity. People can feel when a corporation is just looking for quick revenues. I’m not here for a quick exit, or to make a lot of money, I’m here to make a better planet for my kids. What’s next for Prana? MR: We’re always working hard on environmental programs, and becoming more involved with our farmers. Crossing the border into the US is huge for us. The idea for Honest came to Alba when she was pregnant with her first daughter, Honor. Alba was washing her unborn baby’s onesies with a detergent her mother had recommended when she broke out in hives. And thus was the beginning of her mission to create affordable, safe and effective consumer products, that are easy to get, and to top it off, beautiful. Along with her business partner Christopher Gavigan, Alba sought to create an amazing product without harming people or the planet, making products that were as environmentally friendly, nontoxic, and healthy as possible. Launched in 2012 with only 17 products—primarily diapers and wipes—which were delivered to subscribers’ homes on a monthly basis, the company now boasts more than 135 products from toothpaste to vitamins to nipple balm, and sells both online and in more than 4000 retail locations. Last year, the company launched in Korea—with plans to move into more international markets. In addition, Honest Beauty was launched, adding makeup and skin care to the company’s eco-friendly portfolio. These moves raised the valuation of the company up to $1.7

JA: Being an entrepreneur is a 24/7 job. It requires endless creative and strategic thinking to do something that hasn't been done before! And, you always have to be thinking in a way that keeps you ahead of your biggest competitor: yourself.

How do you balance your life and what does a typical day look like? JA: No two days are alike. I’m often in back-to-back meetings with different departments. When you're building a CPG company [consumer packaged goods] that’s as diverse as ours, there are lots of different touch points and a ton of moving parts. Never a dull moment, that's for sure! What’s the most challenging part of motherhood for you? JA: Time management. Quality time with my kids is paramount, so I'm always working to get that balance just right. How did you become interested in natural health and natural products? JA: When I was a teenager, I filmed a TV show in Australia. There are so many natural remedies that have come out of Australia, one example is tea tree oil. This was my first exposure to homeopathy and homeopathic

Two steps to effortless weight loss There are many factors contributing to our expanding waistline and that is why dieting generally does not work. Most dieters gain all the weight they have lost and more, within 60 days of halting a calorie reduced diet. parents, the University of Melbourne found that while the emotional and mental health of children raised by heterosexual couples was essentially the same as those raised by gay parents, children of same-sex couples tended to be more open-minded and empathetic. They have more self awareness, and are better at communicating their feelings; and because they are typically not subjected to rigid gender roles, they are freer to pursue a wider range of interests.

leading them to split up their workload based on skills rather than gender. The traditional nurturing role is shared and so is the traditional breadwinning role. It’s not one parent over the other. Dr. Simon Crouch, the lead researcher of the University of Melbourne study noted that everyone contributing in an equal way led to a more harmonious household and happier children. Crouch also examined the difference between heterosexual parents where the mother was the primary caregiver, versus homosexual couples where both parents shared the role of primary caregiver. Of the heterosexual couples, moms tended to have much higher amygdala activity—responsible

Interestingly, the homosexual parents who both served as primary caregivers had both sides of the brain light up. Crouch described these findings as “liberating,” with children reaping the benefits of parents breaking instead of conforming to stereotypes. These findings back up research performed by Dr. Peggy Drexler—a psychologist who has spent her life studying sex and gender. She observed that the adult children of gay moms and dads—who were raised in loving, nurturing homes—were emotionally literate, socially evolved, and thanks to growing up without ingrained and preordained ideas of gender roles, felt that nothing was beyond their reach—including exploring life with generosity and creativity.

Raising smart and empathetic children According to a seventeen year study in Pediatrics, the official journal of

the American Academy of Pediatrics, children raised by same-sex parents may also have an advantage in the classroom. The study concluded that children raised by same-sex parents do better academically, are more confident than their peers and have fewer behavioural problems. And the differences don’t end there. While there is little difference in achievement, mental health, and social functioning between children raised by heterosexual and homosexual parents, the latter may have the advantage when it comes to open-mindedness and acceptance. Drexler’s research also confirmed that children of same-sex parents were more self-aware, more adept at communicating their feelings, and exhibited more empathy for people different from themselves. Through the support of their families, children of gay parents developed stronger skills at thinking independently and standing up for what they believed in, distinguishing them from many children with straight parents.

“The study concluded that children raised by same-sex parents do better academically, are more confident than their peers and have fewer behavioural problems.” Choosing to become parents In general, same-sex parents tend to be more motivated, more committed, and more thoughtful parents than heterosexual couples, because they usually have to work very hard, and plan accordingly to become parents. It rarely

The choice to become a parent “translates to greater commitment on average and more involvement in parenting” says Abbie Goldberg, a psychologist at Clark University in Massachusetts. If a same-sex couple wants to start a family, they need to find the non-traditional means to do so. This process is often laborious and time consuming. So when a child does come into their lives, that child is very much wanted, and the family is prepared for them—both emotionally and financially. Because samesex parents often have to work very hard to become parents, their children will know that they were very wanted, which is critical in a child’s development. The keys to a healthy childhood are stability and love. Two good parents are better than one good parent, but one good parent is better than two bad parents, and anyone who says that children need both a mother and a father in the home is “misrepresenting the research” says Judith Stacey, professor of Social and Cultural Analysis and Sociology at New York University. Good parenting is not influenced by sexual orientation; it is influenced by a parent’s ability to create a loving, nurturing, and supportive home for their children, and in that regard it doesn’t matter whether they’re being raised by two mothers, two fathers, or one of each.f V I S TA M A G A Z I N E . After roughly five and a half hours of sleep (total), you are feeding your wee one a homemade breakfast of organic porridge and fruit… and the only thing you manage to get down is half a lukewarm coffee. Does this sound familiar? It’s time for a nutritional intervention. Parents work so hard to keep their children healthy and happy but sometimes, we lose our own self-care regimes in the process. As a dietitian—and the mother of a six-year-old and one-year-old—I know this all too well. Leisurely yoga classes and jaunts to the farmers market to pick up food for a dinner party get replaced by harried last minute updates to your grocery delivery service and convincing yourself that a soy milk latte is practically a vegetable. As challenging as it can be to remember to feed yourself well, it is more critical than ever: lack of sleep and increased stress exacts a heavy toll on your body. Think of it this way: even though you may not be training for a marathon, parents need high performance nutrition… and a realistic strategy for getting it sorted. From one parent to another, consider this your nutritional game plan for, oh, the next couple of decades.

This is not the time to spend hours chopping… or you won’t get all your veggies in. Go for zero prep fruits and veggies as often as you can. Think frozen berries and chopped greens, pre-washed salads and cherry tomatoes. These little helpers will mean the difference between one daily serving of veggies and ten. STEP TWO:

Take the night shift.

Sleep-deprived and time-crunched mornings are crazy enough without scrambling to get

breakfast and lunch prepped in an hour. Stop the morning madness and prep the night before. As you prep dinner, you prep lunches for the whole family. Yes, pack yourself a lunch. Ditching take out will save you money—and save you from poor choices. S TEP THREE:

Sit and eat.

No matter how busy you are, don’t skip a meal. Set an alert in your smart phone if you have to. If you are running on fumes, you are going to burn out. Now that you have your meals prepped, you can sit down and enjoy them. Even if all you can spare is five minutes, those will be five minutes well spent.

Life is busy, and as my 11 and 13 year old daughters remind me everyday, kids just make it busier. As a dad, I know that my own health is key to providing for my family’s wellbeing—both short and long term. But taking the time to exercise often felt like I was taking time away from my kids. The harder I tried to create more time, the more frustrated I became. So, I gave up trying to create time and started leveraging the time I did have to provide opportunities for my family to play together. A number of years ago, I surveyed just over 1000 of my blog readers and asked them “what prevents you from exercising on a consistent basis?” The top 5 responses included: being exhausted after a long day; lack of time due to

Of course, I hear from parents all the time that they feel they have to force their kids to move nowadays. So rather than volun-telling them what to do, I know you can recruit them with these 4 simple tips to make family fitness fun:

1. Make it fun While parents might watch their kids run around on the playground and think “what a great workout they’re getting,” at no time does a kid think of this time as exercise or working out—to them it’s just play time! And we can all learn from their outlook. If you make your activities fun, like throwing a Frisbee, flying a kite, hiking, or playing tag, your kids will love it. When was the last time you heard your kids say they didn’t want to play and have fun? If they’re like my kids the answer would be never! All our kids want is time with us, so get out there and play.

2. Move with Purpose

Ideally you are getting a little bit of a ‘huff and a puff’ in your movement, feeling your core temperature rise and maybe a little glow on the brow. This means you’re working! And if you’re working so are your kids. Don’t be afraid to split the play into two 30 minute session. Make it work for your schedule.

4. Make a schedule, but allow room for spontaneity Setting a time each day to move with purpose, have fun and connect with the family is important. If I block the time in my calendar, then I can’t book anything else in its place. It’s our time. But of course, you can’t plan for everything. Leave room for complete and utter spontaneity. While on a road-trip across Northern Ontario we were passing through a torrential downpour. After 20 minutes of sheet-rain, we found ourselves in Old Women Bay right as the sun broke through. It seemed like a perfect place to pull over and take 30 minutes to swim. It was amazing and something my family and I will remember forever. Bottom line, you can’t always plan for everything, and that’s what makes life so freaking cool. Your family will love the time together and instead of being the excuse why you can’t fit in exercise, your kids can be the reason why you choose to stay healthy today, tomorrow and for life. f

Harvest fruit and vegetable snack strips Essentially fruit leather, these strips are easy to make and the ingredients are much cleaner than most store-bought varieties. This version includes vegetables, which don’t really affect the taste but add an extra punch of nutrition. MAKES: 6 PREPARATION TIME: 25 MINUTES COOKING TIME: 5–6 HOURS INGREDIENTS:

• 4 medium sized apples, peeled and roughly chopped (I like using Galas for their sweetness) • 1 small beet, peeled and sliced • 1 cup frozen blueberries

• 1 cup chopped kale leaves • 2 tbsps honey PREPARATION:

Preheat the oven to 200°F and line a 12" x18" rimmed baking tray with a Silpat (silicone) baking sheet or parchment paper. 2. Put the apples, blueberries, beet, and 2 tablespoons water in a medium size lidded pot and cook over medium heat for about 10–15 minutes, until the apples and beet have softened. Stir occasionally to make sure the fruit doesn’t start to burn on the bottom of the pan. 1.

Place the cooked fruit and veg in a blender with the kale and honey and blend until smooth. 4. Pour mixture onto your prepared tray and spread evenly. Giving the whole tray a gentle jiggle can help. (It will look quite thick at this stage but thickness will decrease once it’s dried.) 5. Bake in the oven for 5–6 hours, until dry to the touch. 6. Allow to cool on the tray, then cut into 2 inch wide strips. Roll up the strips and keep in a sealed container at room temperature. They will keep for at least 1 month. 3.

LCO sugar-free pumpkin yogurt muffins Naturally sweetened with dates and no added sugar, these hearty spiced muffins are perfect for fall. Kids will love them for breakfast, in their lunches, or as an after school snack. MAKES: 12 PREPARATION TIME: 15 MINUTES COOKING TIME: 30 MINUTES

Pumpkin Raisin Cinnamon Yogurt pouches. (Note: you may substitute ½ cup applesauce, ½ cup pumpkin puree, ½ cup whole milk yogurt, and 2 tbsps raisins if you like.) • 1 cup pitted dried dates • 2 tbsps pumpkin seeds

plus the dates in a high powered blender until smooth. 5. Pour wet ingredients into dry and mix to combine. 6. Fill muffin cups 2/3 full, sprinkle with pumpkin seeds if using and bake in oven for 30 minutes.

Place almonds in a jar or bowl with a pinch of sea salt, then cover them with water. Allow to soak overnight. 7. Drain the almonds and rinse well. 8. Place cold water in a blender. Add the soaked almonds, honey, cacao, vanilla and sea salt and blend until smooth. 9. Place a nut milk or fruit straining bag over a large measuring cup or bowl. 10. In two batches, pour almond mixture into the bag, then use your hands to squeeze almond milk through the bag, into the measuring cup. Discard pulp or save for another use. 11. Pour almond milk into a reuseable bottle and keep in the fridge for up to four days. f 6.

Many years ago, a relative was visiting with her two young children and they pleaded to go for a burger. The youngest, a curious six year old, asked where a burger really came from. He was horrified when I told him it came from a cow. His mother had kept that from him hoping to avoid his distress as a sensitive animal lover. Needless to say the gig was up as he made a rightful fuss about not being told this profoundly basic knowledge. Children want to know what and where their food comes from. They are wise, curious and tuned in. Adults may believe that they are protecting their children by hiding facts, or neglecting to educate them about what’s real in the food universe. But connecting them in an intelligent way gives them respect for what they are being fed, as well as what they will later on choose to put into their own bodies. It will instill in them a reverence for the sacredness of nature. Our society is becoming more conscious around food and therefore children are more connected to nature’s bounty. In the world of plant food, there are many wonders waiting to be explored:

Spices Aromatic spices are filled with intriguing qualities that encourage children to eat adventurously and appreciate diversity in their diet. They also stimulate their curiosity. The question of giving spiced foods to babies and young children has always been controversial. But pediatric dietitians, pediatricians, and pediatric gastroenterologists confer that spices are actually beneficial to young children and even babies, as these fragrant seeds increase nutrition diversity and decrease ‘food fussiness’ when they’re introduced at a younger age.

Seeds Seeds are filled with magic and mystery. These aromatic gems have emerged throughout history through stories and mythologies. Seeds build creative, strong, beautiful structures in the developing tissues and cells of children’s bodies. Teaching young children about the lifecycle from seed to flower to fruit is an education that will inspire and illuminate their minds. Herbs While I agree with the no-salt, no-sugar practice for babies and toddlers, I don’t think that means baby food has to be bland. As the preference of some young children for ‘white foods’ aka pasta, bread, and more pasta (sans anything nutritious added) may be the result of a lack of herbs and spices in their young diet. Certain cultures introduce herbs very early on, which influences the child’s palate for a more diverse diet and reduces picky eating in most cases. Introducing spices and herbs from around 6 months may prepare taste buds for broader flavours and tastes. From an Ayurvedic perspective, there are three characteristic stages of life. Birth to sixteen years is the Kapha (earth and water) stage. During this stage children are attracted to and crave the anabolic Kapha foods that support the incredible growth of their young bodies. These are the sweet and grounding foods such as grains, legumes, milk, fruits, and sweet earthy veggies. During this time, they are unfortunately very often exposed to sweet

processed foods that are not wholesome but have similar characteristics and can cause early imbalances. This Kapha phase is when our immunity is built and the quality and diversity of food is especially important. Children suffer from the Kapha excesses of their sweet diet through common Kapha-type imbalances that include recurrent colds, congestion, and runny noses. Aromatic spices and herbs act as medicine, balancing the heavy Kapha nature of these foods while enhancing their benefits. The best spices to add to food for kids are the aromatic variety, which are not too hot and stimulating. Cinnamon, cardamom, coriander, fennel, cumin, turmeric, saffron, and fresh ginger are all good choices. Start with moderation and allow at least four days before adding anything new, ensuring there are no allergies or adverse reactions. Including spices or as I like to call it, aromanutrition, is beneficial to the whole family and your kids will connect through all five senses. f
