SUMMARTÓNAR 2017 This year we celebrate the 26th Summartónar festival This year it is 25 years since the Associ ation of Faroese Composers (Felagið Føroysk Tónaskøld) organized the very first Summartónar festival. Summartónar 2016 – the 25th festival – focused on Faroese music. For 2017 we go global. The Association of Faroese Composers is a member of the International Society of Contemporary Music (ISCM) and this year we will hear music from six continents, including works by composers from Argentina, USA, New Zealand, Europe, Japan, and South Africa. Come and join us on our musical journey as we open our windows onto the world. A brief history of Summartónar Beginning in 1984, Faroese composers started organizing concerts of their own music together with works by international composers. After establishing the Association of Faroese Composers (Felagið Føroysk Tónaskøld) in 1987, these concerts became more regular, especially with the annual Spring Concert and a

series of concerts over the summer in collaboration with the Listasavn Føroya. In 1991 a concert with works by several Faroese composers was presented at the St Magnus Festival in Orkney. After participating at a festival in a community comparable with the Faroe Islands, we decided to establish a similar festival the following year in the Faroes. We used the name Summartónar from the beginning and in 1992 15 concerts were held in Tórshavn, Kirkjubøur and Runavík with compositions by William Heinesen, Edvard Nyholm Debess, Alti K. Petersen, Pauli í Sandagerði, Heðin Meitil, Bjarni Restorff, Ólavur Jøkladal, H.J. Højgaard, Esmar Jacobsen, Sunleif Rasmussen, Kristian Blak, Richard Stanley and Graeme Rudd in addition to classical repertoire. Since these early years, the musical scene in the Faroes has gone from strength to strength and our festival reflects the diversity and creativity of today’s musicians who bring Faroese music to the world and international music to the Faroes.

During the last several years, Birgir Enni, skipper of the vessel Norðlýsið, and Kristian Blak have arranged trips with musicians and audiences to caves, into which – weather permitting – one can enter in smaller boats, utilizing the natural sounds and unique acoustics of the caves as integral parts of the music. These concerts have taken place in collaboration with Summartónar, which brings visiting musicians in additional to local performes into these unique Faroese concert halls. See programme for these concerts on Tuesdays from June 6th to August 15th – and Sundays from June 18th to August 20th NORÐLÝSIÐ, Schooner, departs from Vágsbotnur, near Bryggjubakka 14, Tórshavn at 1 p.m. – Returns to Tórshavn approx 6 p.m. depending on wind and current. welcome to gjáargarður

Live like a local IMAGINE a hotel, that doesn’t feel like a hotel. Where you instantly find you’re at home, and not a paying customer. Where you make friends with the staff and become part of the family. You have just pictured living at Gjáargarður. Nestled between the high mountains, the drive alone makes it worth a visit. In the lush summer months you may feel like you’re in the Austrian Alps – in the winter, you are struggling to make it through Mordor. Once you’re there just feel yourself unwind. This is Gjáargarður. We like to call it a Guesthouse. You will like to call it Home.
