Editorial Welcome to the the Premiere Issue of vlife! Located in Erie, Colorado, north of bustling Denver and due east of earthy Boulder, Vista Ridge and Vista Pointe are unlike any other planned communities. Friendly neighbors, picturesque surroundings, and endless outdoor adventures make the Ridge and the Pointe great places to raise a family. These tight knit communities have a reputation for thoughtful interaction through volunteer service, recreational activities, and cultural events. Erie’s economy is thriving. Area business leaders and residents are dedicated to driving the region forward. A balanced diverse combination of natural, cultural, educational and business resources make an ideal location for growing businesses, entrepreneurs and families alike. Amazing Erie has become a hotspot for local artists through A.C.E. (Arts Coalition of Erie). Building the future by preserving the past is one of Erie’s highlights. Taking a tour around the Spirit of Flight Aviation museum you become instantly aware of our country and the community’s rich heritage and deep historical roots. Architecturally, Vista Ridge and Vista Pointe is a relatively new community which includes arts and crafts style and contemporary homes. This magazine is a labor of love. It was created because I felt that we needed a stylistic, informative magazine to highlight all the creative , talented and awesome residents and local businesses. As a city chick, I was residing in Manhattan and made a visit to Colorado . Much to my surprise, I instantly fell in love with Erie. It had a mix of a western spirit, small town charm and a promise of an excellent quality of life. Married to my husband, Tom and with our one year old, I did something I never thought I'd do; we left the hustle and bustle of Manhattan to move out west. Three years later, I'm still smitten with Vista Ridge and enjoy all the friendships our family has made. Our first issue of vlife celebrates what we, at Vista Ridge, Vista Pointe and the Erie Air Park stand for: family, humanity, culture, and progression. Warmly, T!"a Ventker

Message from Mayor Joe Wilson You feel it when you get here. Whether you’ve come to do business or simply to enjoy the amazing array of recreational opportunities, the arts, or history and dining in "Old Town," you feel welcome in Erie! The folks who live, work and play here are a key part of our distinctly rich quality of life, adding to it with their friendly, thoughtful manner and regular smiles. The welcome you feel in Erie is not just a casual attitude, it’s our culture. For over a century, business and people have come to Erie and stayed to make it their home. In the beginning, natural resources, spectacular views and western freedom drew people from far and wide who would decide to make a future in our fair town. These days it’s clear; our greatest resource is the people of Erie who make all feel welcome, eager to share their delightful town with visitors and new residents alike. Our growth has been strong and consistent as more businesses cater to our excellent customer base and strategic location along the I-25 corridor - adjacent to the 4 million consumers of the Denver metro area. Employers have discovered our talented and educated work force as well. Families regularly report making more friends (and faster) after moving to Erie, than at any other point in their life. If it’s quality of life, recreation and enjoyment or finding the perfect spot for your business, you are welcome in Erie! - Mayor Joe Wilson Joe Wilson at the annual Erie Balloon Festival photos: © Trisha Ventker 2011

tech n o lo g y by Robb James There have been many incredible discoveries and inventions over the last couple hundred years but we are really living in exciting times. We are living in and witnessing an incredible digital-technology revolution that is moving exponentially faster every day. This digital era is evolving so fast that the sooner we embrace it, if we already have not the better. All of us are users of digital technology in some form and many of us embrace technology in our jobs and personal lives. I have a 97 year old neighbor who is very proficient on the computer and it has helped her stay connected with friends and very relevant in their lives and it has helped her live a much longer, happy life. Quality of life is one of technologies greatest attributes. The ability to work remotely from anywhere in the world provides freedom and choice. Technology also allows primary employers the ability to locate in beautiful rural areas like Erie. Erie has much more though than just being a beautiful rural area with some of the most incredible views on the Front Range. Erie is located in the heart of the Colorado version of ‘Silicon Valley’. In the mid-‘90’s and the early 2000’s, Colorado was a large participant in the dot.com era

16

which ended quickly and became known as the ‘dot.bomb’ era. High-tech talent flocked to Colorado during this time and many of these people fell in love with Colorado and stayed. This is one reason why Colorado continues to be a technology leader with more and more, well known technology companies moving business to Colorado. There are also still a number of Venture Capital firms that call Colorado their home to help new technology start-ups in Colorado. Erie finds itself right in the middle of the action, surrounded by Downtown Denver, Boulder, Golden, Broomfield, Fort Collins, Longmont, Louisville and many other great cities. In addition, Erie is surrounded by great universities such as University of Colorado, Colorado School of Mines, University of Denver and Colorado State University. Erie also enjoys its very own airport and is only 30 minutes from an international airport. I have been in many different technology sectors over the last 25 years and currently work for Hewlett Packard focusing on cybercrime and security. My responsibilities are nationwide but thanks to technology I can accomplish most of my work from my home in Erie, CO.

In future columns I would like to focus on different areas of technology and also on specific devices that affect our everyday lives. It is my pleasure to call Erie home and to call Erie residents my neighbor. Please share your comments with me via Robb@RobbCapital.com. I look forward to sharing your ideas in future columns.

WHAT IF YOU FOUND YOURSELF IN SIBERIA, RUSSIA WHERE ONE MINUTE YOU’RE SURROUNDED BY KGB SPIES...

Or another minute flying in a helicopter into the mouth of an active volcano while dangerous sulfuric gas fills the cabin or perhaps risking your life to acquire a rare World War ll aircraft? This exactly what Gordon Page, founder of the Spirit of Flight Center, a world class aviation facility experienced when he embarked to Russia in hopes to acquire a rare airplane to fulfill a childhood dream. Gordon Page is also the post president of the Colorado Aviation Historical Society. Through Gordon’s memoir, the best selling book, Warbird Recovery, he tells us about his amazing journey. Warbird

Recovery deliver’s Page’s gripping

true story with action, intrigue and danger. While touring his flight center and museum I felt as if I had taken a trip in a time machine and was immediately back to the 1930‘s, 1940‘s, 1950’s and 1960’s. Gordon and his lovely wife, Tracey shows passion and enthusiasm to keep this precious history alive. Starting out as high school sweethearts, Gordon and Tracey now run all the facets of the museum. Gordon flies all over the world trying to recover these pieces of history. Tracey splits her time as a partner and art director. She is also the owner of Create-A-Stitch Embroidery, located in the center. Her business specializes in corporate logo design

and digitizing. She is extremely talented and has a keen sense of style. The Spirit of Flight Center celebrates veterans and is dedicated to educating the public. The museum is made up of 3 phases: Recover, Restore, Re-fly. It is a non-profit, world class aviation facility. The museum had approximately 1,000 artifacts of rare aviation gems. It is located at 2650 S. Main Street, Erie , Colorado. It is adjacent to the Erie airport. Museum hours are 10:00 am- 2:00 pm. Grills Gone Wild! by

My earliest childhood memories of food include pressure cooked chicken, overcooked pot roast with mushy gray veggies, pot pies, fish sticks, meatloaf and TV dinners in aluminum trays. TV dinners back in the 60’s were so cool, they were futuristic and compartmentalized. The entrée was front and center (usually fried chicken or Salisbury steak), to the upper right was the mixed veggies and contained in the upper left compartment was referred to as dessert but in reality was a molten blob of artificially colored sugary goo. What was my relationship with food back then? Or was there a conscious one? I never thought about my relationship with food until I was much older. I believe most people are either too busy or just haven’t been educated on the benefits and importance of having a positive connection with what they eat. As you read this article, consider your relationship with food. What I want to accomplish through this article is either a reinforcement of a healthy relationship that you already have with food, or an identification of changes that need to be made in order to begin to enjoy a healthy relationship with food. I have realized that our relationship with food is much like our relationship with other

people, it can be a loving, nurturing relationship or a toxic one. One of the first questions you should ask yourself is, “What am I hungry for?” Is it your body that needs nourishing or is it your spirit that

healthy, satisfying way may be easier than you think. Initially, identifying a bad relationship with food is absolutely crucial. This includes consuming inorganic foods, fast foods and processed foods which are, in my opinion, all dead foods. Food cannot retain vital life energy and nutrients after being in an airtight can or vacuum packed, hermetically sealed and frozen. Furthermore, these dead foods are generally microwaved and/or eaten while driving, talking on a cell phone, and steering with your knee. Besides

there’s a reason for the season. Spring and summer foods are lighter and cooling, while fall and winter foods are hearty and warming. Eating as much organic food as possible eliminates disease-causing pesticides, which will make you live longer and healthier. Eating slowly and with purpose helps the digestion process. A simple prayer of thanks or just a moment of silence before enjoying your meal is a way of gratifying the mind and spirit as well as calming the body so it can utilize its fuel more effectively.

I’m convinced that global warming is really caused by everyone cranking up their Weber’s stoked with charcoal and mesquite. I love Summer and all the grilling I get to do. I have no hesitation about grilling year round, but it is the season when 3 out of 4 dinners at friend’s houses are prepared on a grill. There is something both primal and elegant about the BBQ. It’s a ritual enjoyed by a multitude of back yard cooks

and foodies around the globe. Beef, fish, seafood, poultry and veggies are all subject to delectable grill marks and that savory smokey flavor obtained only by an open flame and glowing coals. Here are some of my favorite grilling recipes, cooling side dishes, refreshing beverages and delicious desserts:

For all the grilling techniques: Preheat gas grill or if you’re using charcoal, the coals should have a nice coating of white ash over all the briquettes and perhaps glowing a bit. Make sure the grate is clean. With a paper towel and tongs, oil the grate so whatever you are cooking releases nicely.

Grilled Steak Serves 2

Ingredients: 2 Cuts Free Range / Grass Fed / Organic Steaks (1/2” thick – Room Temperature) (make sure they have nice marbling) To Taste Fresh Ground Pepper and Kosher or Sea Salt To Taste Worcestershire Sauce, A-1, or Steak Sauce (you won’t need much if any with quality beef)

Directions: Pre-heat grill to medium heat. Season room temperature steaks with fresh ground pepper and a little sea salt. Place on grill for about 2 – 2 1/2 minutes on the first side and about 1 1/2to 2 min. on the other side for rare (for 1/2” thick steaks). Time and temperature will very from grill to grill, so get to know your grill. It’s better to take the steak off too soon than too late. You can always put something back on the grill, but you can’t un-cook something.

BOOK NOOK summer edition

by Kristina Leonard

What are you reading now? “What are you reading now?” That’s a question I hear often, and even though I don’t (yet) own a cool Kindle/Nook/reading contraption, I usually have a book with me. I will happily tell you what I’m reading but first please let me back track a moment and say thank you to my parents for encouraging me to read for pleasure. They pretty much began supporting a book habit that might first be blamed upon Carolyn Keene, the pen name for many authors of the adventures of Nancy Drew. After devouring that series and those adventures of Frank and Joe Hardy, I delved into young adult literature, honors literature reading titles (and to this day I still detest Portrait of an Artist as a Young Man and most other titles from Joyce. Love of reading helped me in college, grad school and pretty much every teaching assignment I have had for nearly twenty years, but one thing slowed my passionate love of reading down…children. I sympathize with glassy-eyed parents who question where I find any time to read. My first response is, “well, it’s less time I have to clean my house” but where I used to stay in bed reading good books until the wee hours of the morning, having children suddenly introduced me to a parent form of something akin to narcolepsy and I swear it took me thirteen months to finish The Lovely Bones. It eventually got easier to find and finish books I’d abandoned during a pregnancy or even consider those 500 page titles described as “epic” on the back book blurbs. Additionally, while I will never read as fast as my spouse, I also can point to all the laundry I have done during the day, papers I’ve graded and smirk back at him. Yeah, he doesn’t care about those accomplishments either so help me out there, dear vlife readers! Going back to my original query, “What are you reading now?”---the answer is more likely to be, “What am I NOT reading right now…” As an instructor of communication and composition/literature, I am finally over the book whore thrill of publishers sending little ol’ ME free books! Still, receiving several Norton editions of The Count of Monte Cristo, The Awakening, and my favorite epics ever Homer’s Iliad and Odyssey, is still a cheap thrill. Many folks roll their eyes at me when I recommend Robert Fagles’ translations of The Iliad, The Odyssey, but they are readable, infinitely enjoyable stories about dudes who behave badly quite often, die tragically and are often reprimanded by the gods and goddesses they have a tricky relationship with.

30

About Kristina Leonard Kristina Leonard, a professor of communication and English literature, has been teaching college for 18 years. Kristina acquired a Master of Arts in Journalism and Mass Communication; and another , a Master of Science in teaching English literature and composition. She’s also a sevenyear resident of Vista Ridge. She can be located at local coffee shops, Metropolitan State College of Denver and various bookstores in the Denver Metro area. Kristina is mom to two school aged children and is married to graphic designer, Aaron Leonard.

If some readers don’t like Homer, then might I suggest Rick Riordan? This wonderful young adult-niche author’s done a wonderful job of introducing bright, capable young men and women who just happen to be Demi-Gods and the adventures of Percy Jackson, the Kane siblings and the kids who congregate at Camp Half-blood are bound to delight readers of any age just as JK Rowling managed with Harry Potter series. Young adult novels in particular are great for busy lifestyles as most of us have quite a bit to do each day with work, families and activities. Most YA books hover around 300 pages at most , but are jam-packed with action and dynamic characters. As a teacher of children’s and young adult literature of many years, I am a big proponent of the CASE method (“Copy and steal everything!”) and when one of my college students simply could not stop reading a book with a big apple on the front of it, I was then introduced to Stephanie Meyer and the first of the “Twilight” series. I realize these novels in par ticular polarize readers but Ms. Meyer tapped into a niche that has attracted readers all over the world. I read each one compulsively---then I threw the last one at a wall after it annoyed me and I will show you the dent in my wall for good measure. Look to others for suggestions. In the good “old” days, many of us probably read the New York Times book section. I then grew cheap and frustrated at my inability to read one paper before a week had passed so I follow their writers on line…There are so many great resources online from NPR to Entertainment Weekly to social networks such as Twitter and Facebook (where you can follow the book blog suggestions from NPR and Entertainment Weekly). My favorite spot for pilfering great titles would be Goodreads.com, the Facebook for book lovers. You can learn more about your favorite authors by becoming their fan and get great tips on what they are reading as well.

Asking others. I am certainly not the most original person so I ask strangers and friends alike about what they are reading and we certainly don’t lack for book clubs in the great community that is Erie, CO. Some mention must be given to Oprah’s talk show and her movement to have a national book club that first began in 1996. Oprah’s book selections got a nice branding indicating her seal of approval and usually raced to the top of the best-seller lists. Many of them left me wanting a hug and a blankie to recover… Great book suggestions are found anywhere---Target now lists their favorite book club reads as does Costco via their Costco Connection magazine. Some great book blogs to read include www.bookclubgirl.com and www.booksonthenightstand.com. Finally, in response to the fir st q u e s t i o n - - - m y fi v e b o o k s t o recommend to anyone looking for good reading material include the following— 1. The Hunger Games trilogy: Why, yes, I’m cheating by listing three books here, but once you start The Hunger Games, it’s likely you’ll want to finish the Suzanne Collins series. Considering how these books have been passed around Vista(s) Ridge and Pointe, the question more likely is who has not yet read them. My thanks to the wonderful ladies in a certainly Kenosha Farm book club who first told me about this YA series more than two years ago. 2. The Help by Kathryn Stockett: Just a readable narrative of what “the help” went through in running the well-to-do white ladies’ homes in early part of 1960s Mississippi. I thought this one was for certain a “chick” lit book, but I encounter as many men who have read and loved it, too. 3. The Devil in the White City: Murder, Magic, and Madness at the Fair that Changed America by Erik Larson. I get teased for offering up more fiction choices, but this non-fiction title is as page-turning as any fiction thriller I’ve

picked up and the look at Chicago’s 1893 hosting of the world’s fair as first (known) serial killer HH Holmes terrorizes the city is going to make history lovers happy. 3. Anything by Rob Sheffield. Yes, I am cheating again, but this popular Rolling Stone writer first recounted his courtship of his wife in the beautiful, sad Love is a Mix Tape and more recently discussed his time in the 1980s in the humorous memoir Talking to Girls About Duran Duran: One Young Man's Quest for True Love and a Cooler Haircut. 4. The Glass Castle. VR resident Laura Faulkner recommended this one to me and, boy, this amazing tale from Jeannette Walls recounting her itinerant youth and living in the id parents certainly made me appreciate my own upbringing more. Walls’ prose is vivid, funny and hear t-breaking and the anecdotes about her childhood where food was scarce, and moves were frequent is not to be missed. 5. Internet Dates from Hell. Our vlife editor/publisher Trisha Ventker once was a pioneer in the early years of online dating. In many humorous accounts she painstakingly details all the wisdom she gained with each and every date, and best of all---she found a wonderful pr ince waiting after encountering 400 plus frogs… Thanks for listening, bibliophiles, and see you around hood.

How a Broken Marriage and Garbage Led to Happiness and Success for This Amazing Artist and Mom of Two by Kristen Philipkoski from www.stylenik.com

Sondra Ferrari Parker recently placed her artwork in a gallery for the first time. It was one more milestone that added to her unexpectedly happy and satisfying 40th year of life. Unexpected because just a few years earlier, she found herself alone with two kids and a missing husband who had walked out on the family leaving no financial support. She resorted to salvaging scraps of wood to paint on because she couldnʼt afford to buy canvas. But the hardships turned out to be fortuitous events in both her life and her art. She began experimenting with covering the wood with shapes, painting over the barrier, then removing it to reveal the wood grain. It launched a whole new direction for her work, and has led to interest from galleries, Sothebyʼs staging agents, and private clients. And after accepting that her marriage was over, she met the love of her life, Greg, two years ago on Match.com. Iʼve known Sondra since we were kids growing up in a very

small, rural town in Pennsylvania. I graduated from high school with her older sister Dottie, and always knew her as the “kid sister” (albeit a stylish and creative one). When I recently saw her amazing paintings and she told me her story of difficulty and ultimate success and happiness, Sondra suddenly came into focus as an amazing mother and artist who is setting an admirable example for all of us. This is how things went down.

SMART SUMMER FUN by Bet

As a child, I remember summer being the best part of the year! “no more pencils…no more books…no more teacher’s dirty looks” As fun as it is for a parent to plan a summer of fun and play, on average, students lose approximately 2.6 months of grade level equivalency in mathematical computation skills during the summer months. Additionally, the International Reading Associating and NAEYC (National Association for the Education of Young Children) have found the early years, (from birth through age eight) are the most important period for literacy development. For children summer is a time of fun and play and many families spend less time on learning activities and more time on play. As a parent, I constantly wonder, what more should I be doing. To battle this loss of knowledge, I recommend adding educational value to the fun and playtime that you have carefully planned for your family.

KIDS

1. Introduce your kids and your family to some creative endeavors. They might discover a hidden talent or interest. Craft projects are always a perfect way to encourage learning through play. There are countless of books and websites with plenty of craft projects that are kid appropriate and fun to make. Don’t forget the fun, messy projects like finger painting, tie dying and outdoor chalk masterpieces!

2. Expand on the special locations you may be visiting. Visiting the zoo? Pick a favorite animal and read a book about them. Take an internet search about the particular animal. Can’t choose one favorite? Try choosing a type – like felines or reptiles, or location like North American or Australia and read about them ahead of time and discover one or two new facts while there.

3. Perhaps your summer includes some travel. Involve your kids prior to the trip. Let them help map out the trip on Google Maps or even better with an atlas or map. Help them to research the location you are headed. Let them help plan some of the activities. Figure out distances and estimated length of travel. Encourage them to keep a travel journal so that they can practice their handwriting as well as creative writing.

4. Don’t forget reading with your child over the summer break. Join a reading club through the local library or book retailer. Both Borders and Barnes and Noble have Summer Reading programs. If you are reading together, have your child try to “stump” you by asking comprehension questions. They have to concentrate on the reading to find the “tricky” questions. Don’t forget to discuss the story, what would you do if you were that character? How do you feel about what has happened in the story? It makes perfect dinner table conversation.

5. Spend some time in the kitchen together. Cooking is an amazing place for learning. Measuring and fractions as well as time are all topics that are necessary for the cooking experience. Have them split the recipe or double the recipe. Have them help you shop for the ingredients needed. Figure out if it fits in your budget; pick the proper brands and types of ingredients. Discover healthy choices and choose good meals.

6. Science comes to the backyard. Try some science experiments in the backyard. There are so many great kits ranging from “Gross out” experiments to Mythbusters. There are also plenty of websites with detailed directions on plenty of fun experiments.

7. Ready for a movie? Have the kids if they are old enough to read the newspaper and find the section with the movies. Have them find the theater and the show times.

8. Go outside and play! Give your child paintbrushes and rollers and a bucket of water. Allow the children to “paint” the house, deck, sidewalks, driveway, etc. This helps strengthen large muscles that will be used when your child begins to write. Sidewalk chalk is great! Ask your child to write letters, their name, the names of friends and family members. If your child knows their letters, ask them to write simple words (consonant, vowel, consonant that are phonetic are the best to start with - meaning they sound just as they are written). Play the Rhyme Time Ball Toss Game with your children. While tossing a ball, the first person says a word and throws the ball. As each person following throws the ball, they think of a word that rhymes with the word. The words can be real or makebelieve, it doesn’t matter. The ability to hear and create rhymes is part of phonological awareness, which is vital pre-reading skills.

9.

Plan some educational places to visit. In Colorado we are lucky to have lots of fun places to learn while we play. Take a trip to the Denver Art Museum or Natural History Museum. Visit and learn about animals at the Aquarium, the zoo, the Butterfly Pavilion or the Wildlife experience. Visit the US Mint or tour the State Capital Tour. Take a trip to our past, visit the Dinosaur Ridge or visit the Littleton Historical Museum.

10. Don’t forget the good ole flashcards. There are countless games you can create with flashcards! Create a road and the cars can roll over them as the flashcards are answered correctly. Play card games with flash cards. Try a game of “War” or “Go Fish” with math flashcards. Play Board Games like Boggle or Scrabble or work on puzzles, word searches, crossword, etc. Keep them thinking but make it fun!

Summer is here. You don’t need the weatherman to tell you that. You can see for yourself with everyone out running and riding their bicycles. Many of us have been dormant all winter so getting back on the road will take some warming up and conditioning. One of the most common issues that cyclist and runners face while being active is with the iliotibial band or “IT” band. To locate the IT band, place your hand on the outside of your upper thigh and continue down the side of your thigh to the knee. This band or tract is a piece of fibrous tissue that helps to stabilize the knee during activities such as running or cycling. The repetitive motion involved in these types of activities creates irritation and friction causing thickening of the band and inflammation. As the band gets tighter and more inflamed, it can cause pain on the outside of the thigh and along the outside of the knee. As the problem progresses, the kneecap (or patella) may track abnormally resulting in additional knee issues

and the inability to participate in running and cycling activities. What can you do? Unfortunately, the first thing to do is stop activities that will aggravate the condition. You need to let the muscle rest and bring the inflammation down. A foam roller can also help to break up the adhesions in the IT band. I’m not going to lie. The foam really is going to hurt at first. Start slow. Lay on your problem side and use your upper body to roll the foam roller from your hip down the side of your leg. Go back and forth a few times. Apply ice to bring down the inflammation. Because IT band syndrome is usually caused by biomechanical issues, you should also consult a chiropractor or physical therapist to help correct these issues.

Is There Any REAL Reason You Can’t Achieve A Total Body Redesign? I’m sitting in the JFK departure lounge having spent the last four days with other like minded fitness experts and in four days we’ve talked, discussed, argued and analyzed the patterns and goals of the successful people we train. The over riding factor is that the people who actually achieve a new body and what I call a full body redesign are the ones who actually BELIEVE they can. The simple fact is that the tools are there to use, and they’re good. The success of others is

there to view and respect. But the one thing that no one can force upon an individual who is about to get going on a workout program is the fact that deep down that person needs to actually believe they can do this.

40

They need faith, confidence and a belief in themselves. These are the tools, before any workout program, exercise structure or fitness program, that will put them onto a road that is heading towards nothing but success. Fitness training and body redesign is not the only area where self belief is the ‘important ingredient’, I have also spent the last four days with many brilliant people in my industry who have different clientele but preach the same thing: if you don’t believe you can do something then its likely you won’t do it. But listen, why on earth should YOU not be the one who does it? Why shouldn't you be the successful person who achieves an stunning physical and emotional makeover through your own hard work and guidance from the program of your choice? The reality is that there is NO REASON at all why you cannot do whatever you want. I am a big believer (no make that HUGE) believer that there are no limits, you can have what you want (as long as it doesn’t hurt someone else) and as long as you believe and focus on your goal. This is not some wishy-washy BS that’s makes you feel warm and fuzzy but in reality is ineffective, NO. this is the reality of why people succeed.

I could talk on this all night. I’m passionate about it. I do not believe for a moment that some people are here to ‘make up the numbers’ and others are here to set standards and be the ‘stand out people’. I believe that ANYTHING you want to do is achievable. And anyone is CAPABLE. Obviously I don’t think its ever a simple process or a case of waking up and the ‘new body or physique’ is there in the mirror. It requires hard work, make no mistake. But that very need for real hard work and a desire to face challenges and come out the other side stronger is one of the most incredible lessons of our life. We grow and we change for the better by facing bigger challenges and succeeding with them by knowing going in that we are good enough to do anything we set our minds to.

join the party Synergy Fitness Studio owners, Coreda and Nick Ehrhart, began with a vision to bring the most popular and most desired fitness programs to people in a very comfortable, encouraging and fun environment. The instructors and studio alike needed to be engaging and motivating. The classes had to be amazing and fun, but also deliver results. In a leap of faith, the Ehrharts launched the studio in the spring of 2010, with an opening class schedule that included yoga, Pilates, stroller fitness for new moms, Zumba and group fitness training. The class schedule quickly changed as the interest centered around Zumba and dance fitness specialties. Coreda, having a strong background in dance, has always dreamed of owning her own dance studio. She and her most senior instructor, Shalea McDonald, truly understand the attraction and desire to have a place to foster relationships with others who share the same love of dance and music. Building their brand around the Zumba fitness lifestyle, they have learned that people are searching for activities that make them look and feel good about themselves as well as foster a community of like-minded people to share the experience. Nick and Coreda named the studio “Synergy” after that very concept. The sum of the parts when working in

42

synchronicity is greater than the sum of the individual working alone.

Zumba Fitness classes break all of the exercise rules. A fitness workout has never been as fun and inspiring. Zumba fused dance and full body movement with aerobic exercise to create a fitness programs that is lovingly referred to as a party. The hour-long experience leaves people feeling great and hungry for more. A great sweat, this form of fitness not only burns an unbelievable amount of calories, but research shows that social interaction and vigorous exercise increases the activity of neurotransmitters that positively affect mood, attention span, perception and motivation. All of this increases the likelihood and willingness of clients to return again and again, leading to achieving amazing results in their weight loss

goals. “People feel sexy and sultry when they can move this way,” Coreda said about the Latin inspired movement of Zumba. “Our clients are feeling their Mojo for sure !” “The smartest thing we ever did,” Coreda said about their decision to offer a Beginning Zumba Steps Class. Open to everyone for just five dollars, this class eliminates any anxiety about walking into a Zumba class. Students learn the four basic rhythms used in Zumba broken down step by step. They are taught that although there is an organized flow to Zumba, they do not have to follow each step or move perfectly. They do not have to pay attention to counts or turns, but just feel the beat of the music and let the beat move their body. Quickly becoming a popular replacement for outdated and intimidating group training programs, Zumba Circuit brings the hypnotizing rhythms of Zumba together with an effective, fat burning calisthenic workout. With great music, and no barking trainer pushing painful limits,

movement feeling energized and inspired. Adding Planet Motion and Hip Hop Hustle to the repertoire seemed a perfect fit and is bringing more dance-inspired exercise options to the studio patrons and a new level of interest to newcomers. Whether looking for a multi-cultural free flowing style or a more urban pop style, these two classes are a great groove and offer the same benefits as Zumba. Today, Coreda and Shalea are feeling inspired by new ideas for new classes and hope to add more danceoriented classes to the schedule this summer. These two Dance Divas are getting the dance itch again that they once had as young girls. They foresee a schedule filled with

traditional dance classes as well as dance inspired fitness programs and unexpected fusions of fitness and music. Nick expects that through their love of dance and dedication to inspiring others as well as encouragement of each other, Coreda and Shalea will no doubt grow this little small town studio into something larger than life. “We still want to bring the most popular and most desired fitness programs to people in a very comfortable, encouraging and fun environment,” shared Nick. Coreda added, “But now we want to break the mold of fitness forever by stamping it with intoxicating dance grooves, and music that moves you, inside and out.”

Don’t forget to join the party, The White Hot Zumba Party on Saturday, July 30th at 6:00 p.m. Admission is $10 per person which includes 2 hour Zumba Master Classes and refreshments. BEAUTY:THE 5 MINUTE FACE

by Danica Jardien Having been in the makeup industry for over 10 years, our local makeup artist Danica Jardien is no stranger to the makeup needs of the everyday woman. She has worked with stay at home moms, career women and celebrities such as Barack Obama, Tyra Banks, Tatyana Ali and Carmelo Anthony. Her passion is to bring beauty to women with a realistic approach of a natural yet glamorous look using minimal products. Below is an example of one of Danica’s makeup lessons that any woman use as her makeup routine.

Makeup Essentials

The 5 Minute Face

I believe that every woman should have a 5 minute makeup look as well as a daytime look. The 5 minute face or “grocery store” makeup is great for looking finished without being bare. No one wants to leave the house with absolutely nothing on... right?

The basics for a 5 minute face include concealer, powder, blush, mascara and lip gloss/ conditioner.

Daytime makeup should be appropriate for your work environment and most importantly be durable to last throughout the entire day. It is

You want to create an even and natural skin color tone, a pop of color on the cheeks, a little mascara to brighten the eyes and a sheer lip color to finish the lips. This is your makeup look at it’s most natural. look. A nighttime look is a must for an evening out so your makeup can stand out in the dim lights. This is the time to add a little drama to your look!

mDaytime Look The biggest complaint that I hear from women about their makeup on a daily basis is… “I wish that my makeup would last throughout the day!” You may be using the wrong product, formula or not applying it correctly. So many things can affect your makeup’s lasting power.

eyebrows are the frame for your face and not a step to skip.

5.

6.

Here are the steps to creating a flawless daytime look: Moisturize the skin with a lightweight moisturizer that contains sunscreen. If your skin is oily to combination or you have large pores or fine lines, use a primer to even out the texture of the skin.

1.

Apply a liquid, cream or powder foundation foundation beginning at the center of the face. Then set with a loose powder by buffing it into the skin for a long lasting effect.

2. Add dimension to your face by applying a bronzer to the hair line on the forehead and into the temples. Continue under the cheek bones, the nose, chin, neck and decollate.

3.

4.

Apply your pink or apricot blush on the apples of the cheeks. Smile! Define your eyebrows with a powder for a soft look that will last. Your

7.

Prep your eyelid are using a water-proof/resistant eye shadow base. This is a very important step so your eye shadow will last all day long without creasing or wearing off. Begin by applying your lightest eye shadow on the brow bone and towards the center of the eye to highlight and brighten. Frosted textures are great on the brow bone! Define your crease with a matte texture brown. This is a great way to enhance your eye shape. Choose a brown that is light to medium and avoid charcoal browns.

8.

9.

10.

Next is your eyelid color which can be a variety of shades, such as golds, peaches, neutrals, etc. Eyeliner is very important to enhance the lash line. Applying eyeliner on the top only will create a brightening look for the eye. A waterproof eyeliner is always a great idea so you can avoid any touch ups throughout the day. When applying mascara don’t be afraid to curl those lashes and apply an extra coat or two. Lashes can really make a huge

difference! Waterproof mascara can be great to avoid any smudging throughout the day.

11. Now that your eye makeup is finished, apply a concealer around the eye area to clean up and brighten. Set with a loose powder to avoid creasing.

12. Moisten the lips with a lip conditioner and apply your lip liner in a natural shade followed by the lipstick or gloss of

your choice.

*Remember to carry touch up products with you throughout the day so you can look fresh and feel more confident. Skin and lips are the two areas that may need the most touch ups. so your makeup can stand out in the dim lights. This is the time to add a little drama to your look! Most women do not need to own hundreds of dollars worth of

L o r e m i p s um d o l o r s i t a me t What are the benefits of wearing lash extensions? Most women choose Lash extensions to lengthen their natural lashes while others want their lashes to look fuller. Extensions can create a younger appearance on many clients. These semi-permanent eyelash extensions create the appearance of a brighter, more open and rested eye, thereby creating a more youthful and rejuvenated look. Above all the main advantage of lash extensions is how much time you can save during your beauty regimen. Extensions allow you to spend less time with makeup; mascara is certainly no longer necessary. The added benefit is that they look beautiful morning and night, all day, every day. Say goodbye to the application of mascara, stained tears and mascara masks around the eyes. With lash extensions you can look and feel gorgeous from the moment you wake up until the moment you Your main investment in Xtreme Lashes is the initial set. The Wonderful World of Fashion Denver’s Trendiest Fashionista, With a Bit of Erie! Fashion, like breathing is second nature for me. My outfits, hair styles, and sunglasses are always premeditated. I usually don’t wear an unplanned outfit. No matter the occasion, I have to have my sunglasses. They probably define my signature the most. I’m unique with my style. People may not understand my outfits or sunglasses at times, but that’s simple, they haven’t been “fashion-ized,” or in a sense looked deeper into what fashion is really about. People focus so hard on what society tells them to wear, that everyone ends up wearing the same outfit. For example, the 52 “jock style” is very typical for

teenage boys ages 15-20: hat, Abercrombie & Fitch logo shirt, cargo shorts, and Phat Farm shoes. It’s extremely boring seeing these outfits over and over again, and what’s worse is that generation and society allows it. Why can’t society transform into something a little more out of the ordinary?

Random Thoughts to Share: I’ve noticed that feathers have become more popular these last few months. I’ve seen them almost everywhere: in people’s hair, in department stores, boutiques, even on the clothing

them selves. I absolutely hate this new trend. Although I like different; feathers just don’t scream “new” or “fresh” to me. A new hair style that I recently created has gotten me a lot of attention. I call it the “Who Hair,” Which I now base off the movie, How the Grinch Stole Christmas. I curl my hair, and because my hair is so thick, it sticks up like the mountain top from that movie. It was an accident to start off with, but I started to really like it. I have had people tell me it looks “classic” and “over-the-top,” which excites me because it’s not played out, and it’s never been done before.

what is your home really worth? by Danny & Jen Hoeft

is what me o h r you rth? o w really

It is quite simple - your home is worth what you as the seller is willing to sell your home for, what a buyer is willing to buy the home for, and what the appraiser says it is worth… which could be what you have agreed upon, or less than that amount. We have had a lot of fun these past few years with appraisers. We have sold houses for more than the appraised value and have fought tooth and nail to get the appraisers to see our side. Most of them are not willing to budge. Is this a lack of knowledge or stubbornness? I don’t know. The problem is - there are no strict guidelines on how they determine the value of your home. One will say the home is worth $330,000, while the next appraiser will say the home is worth $348,000. But the good news is this is only the case in a few instances. For the most part, you can still sell your home for fair market value or even above that.

With these tips and strong negotiator on your side, your chances of getting your home sold in the shortest amount of time for the most amount of money is greatly increased. This is still a buyer’s market, but it doesn’t have to be. 56

There are a few things to remember when selling your house:

1.

Less is more… The less stuff in your house, the house looks bigger and the more money you could get.

2. Staging is KEY! When you hire Danny and Jen, you get the advice of

professional stager for FREE! Yes, FREE!! Whether it is 30 minutes or 3 hours. 3. Pictures are your first impression. Along with the staging Danny

and Jen provide you with a professional photographer who can make your home shine on the internet. Quality pictures definitely equal more traffic for your listing. 4. Exposure. 99% of buyers use the internet today to look for houses.

We advertise your home on over 300 websites – can you imagine the activity that kind of exposure generates? 5. Communication. Don’t be left in the dark. Danny and Jen have a

goal to talk to you once a week. Update you on the showings on your house, the neighborhood market and what is being done to get your home sold.

What happens when a bunch of middle aged guys get together for a game of soccer? While most people are thinking about spending the day relaxing at the pool or hiking in the mountains, there is an ever growing number of local residents lacing up their cleats and playing soccer every Sunday morning. What started out as a few neighbors playing three on three behind the Skyline Pool has grown into a full fledged Adult Soccer League in Erie. None of this would have happened if Benny Manut hadn’t invited me to play with a group in Broomfield in the fall of 2009.

60

While driving back to Vista Ridge, we started discussing the idea of starting our own group. Why drive 15 minutes and play with people we don’t know when we can walk to the field on Skyline play with neighbors. So we started making some phone calls and managed to drum up enough for a game of 3 on 3. This initial group was quite diverse with more foreigners than Americans. The following countries were represented: Romania, France, Germany, Holland, England, and the US. We were the United

Nations of Soccer. Most of us were in our mid 30’s to mid 40’s and hadn’t played competitive soccer in ten to twenty years. Over the winter of 2009-2010 we slowly built a following and our numbers grew to about a dozen, playing in the harshest of conditions. I remember shoveling snow from the field and playing in 11 degree weather. By the summer of 2010 we were ready to take our game to a larger venue. Mitchell Field, next to the Rec Center in Erie was completed just in time.

It didn’t take long before we started having 11 on 11 matches every Sunday. I started an email list and as popularity grew, I decided to reach out to the Director of Parks and Recs and see if they were willing to start offering an Adult Soccer League. By midsummer I had almost 50 people on the email list and most were interested in a competitive league. We opted for a 6 on 6 format with a smaller field and Field Hockey sized goals. Three others and myself agreed to be captains and we formed teams of 10 to 12. Fall 2010 was the inaugural season with Squad Nunez, Orange Crush, Leones Rojos, and Alive and Kicking, playing each other twice, followed by a positional playoff. The overall winner was Leones Rojos with Bernard Lefang as captain. In the Spring of 2011, we were able to add a fifth team, with Bernard’s former Team (he couldn’t play this Spring due to injury), winning it all for the second time. We are continuing to play during the summer, with a consistent turnout of 20+ players and are looking forward to an even larger league this fall. Anyone that played soccer in their youth and interested in some good cardio, camaraderie, and fun, please show up on Sunday mornings at 8am at Mitchell Field or email me at vistaridgefc@gmail.com. I have included some photos from both the fall and spring season, as well as a couple of videos of our early days at Skyline field. I hope to see more soccer enthusiasts showing off your skills and having fun with the rest of us. Don’t worry about how long it has been or what your age. All you need is a set of cleats and a good attitude! photos on left side by Derek Lewis videos by Tom Ventker
