After a few years in Munich Hugo decided it was best he head to Spain where there were beaches and everyone spoke Spanish. Hugo had opened his first bar and restaurant, Carpe Diem and Victoira andher friends and her woould frequent it often. After the semester abroad she stayed the summer and then Hugo and Victoria made

the commitment to date overseas. They would spend 3 months in each other’s countries which was what visas allowed until she graduated in 2008. After Victoria graduated from CU the couple moved to San Pedro, a small town on an island in Belize. They decided to bring the Mediterranean cuisine to the Caribbean and opened their first restaurant together which specialized in Tapas, Paella and seafood. After four years they sold their first restaurant and built two more restaurants in a luxury resort nearby. With Piripi, Victoria runs the front of house and Hugo the back of house.

Q

Tell us about where you are from, your family and about what you do:

L

I am a Colorado native from the South Denver area. However, I’ve lived all over the State! I now reside in Erie Colorado with my family. I’m married to Justin Baker, an Erie native, and we have 6 kids. Our oldest is 14 and our youngest is 5 months old. I am a realtor with The Fowler Group and I have been in real estate for 17 years.

Q

L

What’s the most rewarding thing about being a realtor?

My absolute favorite thing about being a realtor is the people I meet. I have made some of my very best friends during real estate transactions. Finding my clients their dream home or helping them sell their house and having smiles around the table is so rewarding.

Q

What is the most kind thing people have said about you?

L

I’ve had many clients tear up at the closing table because I’ve helped them not only through the real estate process, but because we’ve become friends and they felt my whole heart was in the transaction. What multiple realtors have told my clients was impossible I’ve helped them find. I believe in making dreams come true, and my clients feel it!

Q L

Why do you love living on a farmette?

I’ve always loved animals. Growing up my parents weren’t big on pets. Sometimes I think I’m making up for lost time. I spent my

childhood pretending I had a puppy, dreaming of riding a horse and petting cows when I drove by farms and endlessly drawing sleeping kittens curled up in a ball. Now I have all the animals I dreamed of. The barn is my sanctuary, sure it’s LOTS of work, but a nuzzle from a goat or the special moo that my cows give only to me, fills my cup. Watching my kids jump and play with the dogs or dance around with the goats, sun glimmering in their hair makes me incredibly happy.

Q

goal in 5 years is to build our dream house on our family farm, enjoying bigger pastures and gorgeous Colorado mountain views.

Tell us something most people don’t know about you:

L

I bet most people think I grew up on a farm, but I’m really a city girl. I also met my husband online!

Q

L

What is your goal for the next five years?

My goal for the next 5 years is to grow my business significantly, to give my family financial peace. On a personal level my

Blakes's Taphouse

First step is to make the Jalapeno honey: Thinly slice 1/2 of a de-seeded jalapeno and place in a container with 1 quarter cup of honey and a day prior if possible in order for the honey to take on the jalapeno flavor. Next, take 2/3rd’s of the blackberries and puree. Then place in a saute pan and add a tablespoon of sugar. Slow cook for 7-10 minutes, set aside. Reserve the remaining 1/3 of the whole blackberries for topping the flatbread later. Thinly slice onions and saute in a small amount of olive oil or oil of choice until caramelized, set aside. Cook until crisp 3 slices of bacon and crumble. Thinly slice fresh basil for final topping when it comes from the oven. Time to build the flatbread: Spread a generous amount of the blackberry puree as your base to the Stonefire parbaked flatbread crust, add the goat cheese crumbles, caramelized onions, crumbled bacon and a few whole blackberries. Cooked on a pizza stone or sheet pan at 450 degrees for 4-6 minutes. When finished drizzle with Jalapeno Honey and thinly sliced fresh basil. Enjoy! This recipe should make 4 nice full size flatbreads.

• 2 pints of fresh blackberries • 1 white onion • crumbled goat cheese, one package • crisp crumbled bacon, 3 slices • fresh basil • jalapeno honey, 1 jalapeno

helpful hint: For home purposes it would be best to use a pre-baked flatbread crust from King Soopers. One could use what is called “Stonefire artisan flatbread” and can be found in the bread and/or bakery section.

PARENTING THE VIDEO GAME FANATIC: HOW TO ENCOURAGE OTHER INTERESTS

Parenting the Video Game Fanatic: How To Encourage Other Interests by Cheryl Maguire

“It’s time for karate class,” I said to my 13-year-old son. “Do I have to go?” “Yes.” This has been a common exchange between us for a variety of activities over the past 10 years. He has tried everything from baseball to cooking class—yet nothing holds his interest as much as video games. Every now and then I wonder if it is worth investing money and time into classes or sports he doesn’t want to participate in. But if I hold off on signing him up for things, he does nothing except play video games until we try something new again. It’s a never-ending cycle. ARE VIDEO GAMES HEALTHY? My son is not an anomaly. According to the Pew Research Center, 72% of teens— and 84% of teen boys—play video games. There is a lot of conflicting information about video game use, so it can be hard for parents to know what to allow. It’s screen time, of course, but video gaming is often also a social activity played together with friends either in the same room or online. And if it’s a popular pastime among a teen’s peer group, some parents may be inclined to let them play for an unlimited amount of time with their friends. Playing video games can have positive benefits, says Dr. Larry D. Rosen, a professor at California State University and author of The Distracted Mind. Gaming “can offer some skill-building, including reaction time, executive

functioning, and strategic thinking,” says Rosen. He cautions, though, that “playing video games can be very addictive and create problematic thinking, including desensitization to violence.” VIDEO GAME OBSESSION? Rosen recommends that video game play should be limited, since research shows physiological arousal increases when playing—and kids need breaks from that. He suggests limiting gaming for teens to 60-90 minutes at a time, even if parents decide to allow more total time daily. Maria Sanders, a licensed social worker and certified parent coach, also recommends creating clear boundaries with your teen regarding when and how long they are allowed to play. She says an example of boundaries might be letting teens choose to play an hour of video games either before or after completing homework. She encourages parents to learn more about their teen’s interest in video games. Sit down and play the games with them. “The child will see that you have an interest in what they are doing,” she says, “and you will learn about why they are so attracted to the game.” ENCOURAGING OTHER ACTIVITIES Teens should live “balanced lives and not live solely in the video game,” says Sanders. But if your teen doesn’t express interest in anything else, it may be difficult to figure out which activity or sport to encourage. Sanders suggests asking your teen about the type of video games they like to play. Then you might be able to figure out an activity that uses similar skills or gameplay. An avid Fortnite player, for example, might enjoy a laser tag league.

PARENTING

PARENTING THE VIDEO GAME FANATIC: HOW TO ENCOURAGE OTHER INTERESTS

Parents should avoid simply announcing which activities their teen must do. Rosen stresses the importance of including the child in the decision-making process. With your child’s input, create a list of the types of activities they could do at home during unstructured times or when they feel bored. Similarly, involving your child in discussions about organized extracurriculars will prevent them from feeling forced into participating in certain activities.

TOO MANY VIDEO GAMES: WHEN TO WORRY

STAY POSITIVE ABOUT VIDEO GAMES

Some signs parents should look for are:

Often parents make comments like “video games are a waste of time” or “video games are unhealthy” in an effort to decrease video game use. Rosen says this almost always backfires. Instead, parents could reward the child for responsible behavior. For example, when a child demonstrates that they can stop playing on their own without parent badgering, parents might loosen strict time limits on screen time.

• Isolating behavior or ignoring family and friends

Instead of making negative statements about video games, Sanders says, “The best thing a parent can do is guide their child down a path of self-reflection. Asking questions like, I notice you seem pretty tired after playing video games. How are you feeling? will help your child figure out their own beliefs about video game use.”

• An interest only in playing video games, at the expense of other activities

Parent negativity can make a teen feel as if they are being judged and misunderstood. Focus on their strengths while playing a video game—perhaps, for instance, their ability to help a friend get to another level. A parent should notice that ability and point out how it might connect to real-life situations. Next step: Parents can help them get out there and do just that.

This article was originally published on Your Teen.

Video game addiction is not yet a disorder recognized by the American Psychiatric Association. The World Health Organization, however, recently recognized the existence of “gaming disorder” for the first time. Excessive video gameplay and other types of addictions do show similar patterns, says Rosen.

• Sneaking video gameplay at night or at friends’ houses • Changes in eating or sleeping patterns • Decline in academic performance or not doing homework • A need to continue playing video games beyond a time limit

• Always thinking about video games If you are concerned about your teen, you can contact a mental health professional to discuss counseling options.

Q & A WITH A THERAPIST

SELF

Q & A with a Therapist by Lisa Nelson MA, LPCC, NCC

In the last issue we tackled some concerns about parenting during COVID-19. Here are a few questions relating to couples and how COVID-19 is impacting these relationships. Question: I am so very frustrated. COVID-19 is really getting to me. My partner expects me to act like nothing is happening, but I can’t even think straight! How do I help them to see that I am feeling very overwhelmed and need understanding and support?? Thoughts: You are looking for more support and understanding from your partner to help you manage the overwhelming feeling that come up for you during this crisis. Is it possible that you are not feeling that you can ask for this support? This often happens in relationships. It is usually based on past experience…. For example: I feel like I can’t ask Joaquin for help because when I have done so in the past, he will just shoot me down! Why would I want to try that again? Our past helps us to decide if the current idea is safe to move forward with. This is often not the most accurate way to think…. Is it possible that your partner has changed in this way? Is it possible that they would say yes to your request under these unusual times? What were the circumstances surrounding the last time you asked for support? Were you clear in what you asked for? What has changed in your relationship? Is it worth a try to ask this time? Timing and location- assuming you are going to ask again, the location and timing can make a big difference. When will your partner most likely to be in a good mood? What time of day/ when

in the week? You, as the asker, need to be up for addressing this when it will best suit your partner- not when it best suits your schedule and needs! How to address your concern- Begin by being open and transparent about your needs. Express that you are worried about all of this COVID-19 stuff and could use support and kindness as you are feeling very overwhelmed. Ask for specific help: “It would be so helpful for me if when you see me getting close to tears about having to go to the grocery store, you could respond with a hug or reassurance instead of rolling your eyes at me.” Question: My relationship was doing ok before the virus hit us, but now it seems like we are fighting and angry with each other all the time! How can we manage this time of pandemic better? Thoughts: As a couples counselor I can honestly say that this confinement has brought many couples closer togetherand torn more apart. (It’s kind of like what ever you have going on is now on steroids- great relationships are now on steroids... troublesome relationships are Now. On. Steroids!!)

>>>

Q & A WITH A THERAPIST

Check your own words/tone and reactions. No relationship is a one-sided affair with one perfect person and one evil partner.... a committed relationship is more like two people dancing-both responding to the other and responding to the responses of each other. You, yes you, are part of the problem; and part of the solution. What are you perhaps feeling and thinking these days? Are you stressed, sad, tired, depressed, wearing your heart on your sleeve? If so, you owe it to yourself and your partner to take accurate stock of your own emotions and feelings. Just to give you a weird little glimpse into my brain: If I am tired or stressed my poor hubby can simply ask me what’s for dinner and I take it to mean that I am not a good wife or mom, I am not doing my part and the world will crash in if I don’t come up with the right answer in 2 minutes! I’ll get stressed out because I am so sick of cooking so much food at home these days!!! His very mention of food will send my brain/emotions into overdrive..... This is not his fault, so I have to check myself. If I can step back for a moment and not allow his simple question to overwhelm me- I can react like a normal person. Ask for clarification -if you feel your partner is angry or stressed in what they are saying or doing, ask a few questions to help them express themselves more clearly. “I’m unsure what you are wanting to discuss.” “What do you mean when you say ______?” “When you say ______I feel like you are meaning _______. Is that true?” “WOW, that sounded really angry/frustrated/upset. Is that your intention?” Too much time together is often too much time together! Give yourself, and your family, time a space away from each other. A solo drive in the car with the windows down listening to loud music may be a good mental health move! Find space in your house or yard to have some alone time everyday. Walk alone, headphones

for your own listening pleasure, meals apart, time on Zoom with your own best friends, time on solo hobbies can be helpful to create a cooling effect during all this togetherness. 30 minute conversations - 30 min at the end or the beginning of the day talking with your partner can be a game changer! No need to have big or difficult conversations, but time set aside for the two of you to connect will allow you to remember why you are with them. This can be about the plan for the day/week, questions that you have never take the time to ask about, or even play a game of ‘What if?’. Be responsible and committed to spending this time together. At first this will feel awkward but it will soon be something that you look forward to doing... perhaps even crave this time together! Call for assistance- the above suggestions are for the small consistent arguments that creep up during COVID-19. If you are experiencing mental, emotional or physical abuse do not suffer alone! Do not protect the person who is causing this harm to you and your family. Please please reach out- National Domestic Violence Hotline @ndvh, Call 1 800 799 7233, TTY 1800 787 3224, CHAT @ thehotline.org. If you are in immediate harm call 911.Everyone deserves to be loved with respect and kindness. Reach out for help- couples counselors can be of great help to manage anger, frustration and difficulties that happens between couples. Talk to your friends and family or your pastor, about your concerns. We all need help at this time, COVID-19 is not a normal event and we need to support each other if we wish to survive it well.

Pets as Gifts by Jaime Bessko

The holiday season is upon us and its that time of year when many people will be giving animals as gifts. Receiving a pet as a gift can either be a dream come true or an eventual nightmare. There are common scenarios that contribute to the success or failure of giving pets as gifts for the holidays. A few tips to consider: If you’re getting a new pet for your family for the holidays, make sure that everyone is in agreement about who will be responsible to take care of the animal. Most of the responsibilities will fall on the adults in the home. Just because you want to surprise your kids with a pet, does not mean they are ready for the responsibility to care for the animal. If the children cannot fulfill their daily animal care responsibilities, the adults need to step in and take over. If the adults are on board with that plan, then go ahead and get the pet for their kids. Don’t expect children to follow through on their commitments or make the animal a priority in their life. As long as the child is still a minor, the adults need to be actively involved in the animal’s welfare. Only surprise your girlfriend or boyfriend with a pet if you are both in agreement and have discussed getting a specific animal together in the near future. Even so, some people want to be involved in selecting their next pet, so surprising a loved one can sometimes backfire. Take a realistic account of how much time you have to commit to your new pet. Some animals are much more maintenance than others. Choose a pet that fits with your lifestyle, schedule and most importantly, your ENERGY LEVEL. If you’re adding a canine friend, be sure to select a dog that has LESS ENERGY that you. In my experience, that seems to be the largest contributing factor towards either a fulfilling or frustrating relationship. There are many animals in local shelters and rescues that are perfectly healthy, ideal companions and are waiting for the right home. Some of my fondest memories include getting new pets and sharing wonderful moments with them. I hope these tips help you in creating beautiful holiday memories and long-lasting loving relationships!

10 Tips to Abundance by Janine Bolon

Step 10: Relax! Breathe! You are in Control! Here we are! The 10 Tips to Abundance. I’ve done my best to give you the Reader’s-Digest-Condensedversion of the systems and mindsets used by wealthy people to bring their finances under their control rather than being controlled by them. The Quick List Here is kind of a quick list that brings all the main points together to assist you in the step-to-step walk to abundance.

The most important fact about the wealth accumulation lifestyle is this:

Think marathon, not sprint. Make daily efforts to gain control of your financial life. Don’t try to change everything ALL at once. Do a little something every day and over the course of 1-3 years you will see that you have totally altered your financial life for the better. You will find that you are debt-free and living a life of financial stability and freedom. Stay in touch.

• Write down your goals and purpose statement. Create a Vision Board. Review your goals as frequently as possible. This keeps you focused despite the chaos of life. • Track all your expenses for three months. Then you’ll find you have so much control over your money...it will be a habit for life. • Open your savings accounts (both long term and short term) • Implement the 60/40 principle with money that is NOT your paycheck. • Live within your means, always. If you don’t have the cash to buy it, don’t. • Invest in yourself. Learn how money grows. Totally understand compound interest! If you don’t have an IRA, open one. If you don’t know what I’m talking about...go to www.ira.com and learn, learn, learn. You are welcome to watch my 3 minute money tips that will guide you through compound interest, the rule of 72 and calculating basic math http:// the8gates.com/3minutemoney/ • Declutter your purse, wallet, car, house, garage, and storage units. • Learn a new skill once a month. Make this month’s skill the use of a Price Book. • Keep learning, read a financial book once every six months. • Relax! Take a deep breath! Rome wasn’t built in a day. Know that the steady effort wins this race.
