LETTER FROM MAYOR JENNIFER CARROLL The secret is out. Erie’s parks are world class! If you are like me, you may gravitate towards your nearest park to enjoy a picnic, exercise or just enjoy our beautiful Colorado weather. In ELIFE, I want to share a few of my favorite Erie parks you may or may not have experienced to help spread the word about the incredible amenities we are so fortunate to enjoy here in Erie. Longs Peak Park Deserving a place on a postcard, this expansive park located at 339 Meadow View Parkway offers jaw-dropping mountain views and a wide range of amenities for the whole family. Grab your picnic basket and soak in the view or send the little ones on the scavenger hunt integrated into the modern playground. Lehigh Park Did you know Erie has a splash pad available for cooling down on those hot summer days? Located at 751 Eichhorn Drive in the Erie Commons neighborhood, Lehigh Park is an excellent choice to splash around and burn some energy.

Star Meadows Park

Erie Lake While many are familiar with Thomas Reservoir, Erie Lake is another great option for those seeking a tranquil walk around a lake. Located off of 287 north of Safeway, Erie Lake combines water and mountain views. For the anglers out there, fishing is available at Erie lake. Star Meadows Park This outer space-themed park enables visitors to go on an intergalactic journey with moon rocks, a solar summit and a human sun dial. Located at 777 Flatiron Blvd, Star Meadows is a go-to for sledding enthusiasts in the winter. Locals’ tip: Embark on a sunset stroll in the evening as the park is illuminated with fiber optic lights! Erie’s parks are world class! These four parks are just a fraction of the world-class portfolio of parks operated and maintained by the Town of Erie. I encourage you to invite your friends, families and neighbors to explore these parks or any of the other wonderful parks in Erie. Lehigh Park

Happy Holidays,

Mayor Jennifer Carroll

WINTER REAL ESTATE

Maximizing the Sale of Your Home in the Winter Every year the real estate market sees a decline in the housing inventory in late autumn as we near the holidays. Homes currently on the market are suddenly withdrawn or “off market”, as many homeowners are under the impression that waiting until after the holidays, in the spring is the best time to sell a home.

Buyers have more time off during the holidays, but they aren’t out looking for fun; they are looking because they need to move. They may be moving due to a family issue, an expiring lease or a job transfer. Many buyers also seek the advantage of tax write-off benefits of buying before the end of the year.

While there are certainly plenty of buyers looking for homes in the spring, there are also a greater number of homes for the buyers from which to choose. In the spring, sellers flood the market. That higher inventory means more competition for your home and consequently, sometimes a lower price. After all, buyers can afford to be picky when there is a surplus of homes. Winter on the other hand, can actually be a prime time to sell your home. With fewer homes on the market, competition is less fierce. You are far more likely to experience serious interest in your home during the winter than in the spring, as buyers during this time of the year are generally more focused and motivated.

As a Certified Relocation Realtor, during the fourth quarter of each year, I see an abundance of companies relocating their employees. The company’s goals are to have their workers settled into their new state and homes before the new calendar year begins. Selling during the holidays and winter months does not have to be a disaster. As the seller, you can set showing restrictions that are convenient for you if you are having parties and family in town, for example. Likewise, you can also determine the possession date that will work for your particular situation. Let’s say perhaps you close on your existing home on December 30th; you can easily rent back until March or April. This also enables you to have the flexibility >>>

and time to find your personal home as you already have the cash proceeds from the sale of your existing home. While the exterior of your home and its landscape may not be as appealing in the winter as the spring, if you have a wonderful yard, it’s quite feasible to use photos you or your chosen realtor has taken in the spring/summer. And let’s face it, the interior of homes show better when they are decorated for the holidays. So, deck the halls and make it inviting, but keep it tasteful, just not like the Griswolds’. Put up a few exterior lights to display seasonal tidings and pride in ownership. Keep the house warm and welcoming. If you have a fireplace, light a fire to enhance the cozy ambience. Your local real estate professional should be able to assist you with staging and creating the right look and feel. For buyers, sellers who have their homes on the market are typically equally as motivated as you are during the months of November through March, so don’t

IBUPROFEN IS NOT A CONDIMENT!

O by Erin Meyers

On my parents’ kitchen table, next to the salt, pepper and sugar, there used to be a bottle of ibuprofen. My Dad likes to ride his bicycle, but his knees sometimes bother him, so he’ll pop a couple of pills before heading out on a long ride. No big deal, right? Ibuprofen (brand names Advil or Motrin) belongs to a class of drugs known as non-steroidal antiinflammatories or NSAIDs. Other NSAIDs available over-the-counter include naproxen (Aleve), and aspirin. These drugs work in part by inhibiting certain enzymes that are necessary for the production of prostaglandins, a major contributor to the inflammatory process. Many people are familiar with the common gastrointestinal side effects of NSAIDs, but what you may not know is that they also increase the risk of heart attack and kidney disease, as well as increasing muscle damage during exercise. Prostaglandins play an important role in protecting the gut, maintaining cardiovascular homeostasis, regulating kidney function, and are a necessary component of the healing process, and by inhibiting them you may be doing more harm than good.

HEALTH & FITNESS

No big deal, right?

So, you’re in pain, but you’d like your stomach lining, heart, kidneys and muscles to remain intact. What can you do if you don’t want to take that seemingly innocuous pain pill? Acupuncture! The effectiveness of acupuncture for chronic pain is well-documented, and the American College of Physicians has recommended that acute or subacute low back pain should be treated with non-drug therapies such as acupuncture, massage, or heat. Studies have also demonstrated that acupuncture activates the body’s endogenous opioids and regulates other biochemicals such as ATP, adenosine, GABA, and substance P which are involved in pain reduction. “Cupping” involves the creation of a vacuum inside a glass, plastic or silicone cup. >>>

SO, YOU’RE IN PAIN, BUT YOU’D LIKE YOUR STOMACH LINING, HEART, KIDNEYS AND MUSCLES TO REMAIN INTACT. WHAT CAN YOU DO IF YOU DON’T WANT TO TAKE THAT SEEMINGLY INNOCUOUS PAIN PILL?

This suction increases blood flow, promoting circulation, reducing inflammation and resolving edema, all of which will help with pain relief. A 2013 study done in India found that the results from repeated cupping treatments were comparable to taking 650 milligrams of acetaminophen three times a day. Kinesiology taping is the application of an elastic therapeutic tape to the skin. Similar to acupuncture and cupping, it increases local circulation, reduces edema, and improves blood flow while also affecting sensory input to the central nervous system. Statistically significant improvements in pain and muscle strength have been shown in patients with myofascial pain syndrome. Home remedies such as heat therapy, high dose fish oil, wintergreen or peppermint essential oils, topical liniments and natural anti-inflammatories such as turmeric, tea or tart cherry juice can also provide some pain relief. Yoga and cognitive behavioral therapy have shown promise in helping with chronic pain, particularly back pain. Now that their daughter is a sports acupuncturist and an expert in acupuncture, cupping and kinesiology taping, my parents no longer keep that bottle of ibuprofen on the table. It’s now buried in the back of the cabinet, behind all the little-used spices. Erin Meyers is the owner and acupuncturist at Wild Blue Sports Acupuncture in Lafayette, as well as a danceenthusiast and fitness instructor. She loves to integrate Western biomedical science with Traditional Chinese Medicine to explain why acupuncture works. acefitness.org sciencedirect.com evidencebasedacupuncture.org

HOLIDAY BLUES

H by Lisa Nelson MA, LPCC, NCC

HAPPY HOLIDAYS!! ——- Well, perhaps they may not be so happy… When the holiday season is on the horizon, many of us find ourselves more and more emotionally and perhaps physically stressed than joyful. Often people express feeling overwhelmed and maybe even completely sad or depressed. The holiday season carries with it a great deal of joy, parties, enjoyable moments with family and friends-but for many people, it also brings a great deal of added emotional turmoil. There’s all the shopping, cooking, decorating, holiday parties and dealing with the pressure of budgeting for all of this! Then we need to think about the gifts we need to buy and how much to spend on every person, especially if this or that gift looks as expensive as the other gift for the other cousin! Don’t forget to worry about the weight gain from all the delicious food!!! (It seems the list never ends!) There’s also a lot of family stress, ranging from having to spend time with family members or in-laws that aren’t always easy to get along with….. or dealing with the loneliness of not having family to spend the holidays with…. or wanting to travel to spend time with family and friends and not being able to afford the trip. It is important that we take this topic seriously and that we find ways to ease the pressure and increase the pleasure.

SELF DISCOVERY

You know what makes you feel the most on top of the world- so put that on the top of your holiday list!

Here are a few Yuletide advice for all included: Make time for recharging your batteries

MAKE TIME FOR RECHARGING YOUR BATTERIES BREATHE MAKE A “TO-DO” LIST MAKE A “FUN” LIST GIVE YOURSELF A BREAK

Lisa Nelson is a psychotherapist in Erie and Longmont. She specializes in all things “relationship” marriage, difficult teenagers and children, and parenting concerns. watershedcounselingboco.com

Making time for caring for yourself is often be the most important thing you do when you’re feeling overwhelmed, stressed out and/or unable to focus. The research shows that we’re much more productive and efficient when we take time to talk with friends, spend time in nature, get some exercise, meditate or get a massage. Remember: you’ll actually get more done if you take a little time out once in a while for one of these activities. Try to take some time for yourself and do whatever helps you feel refreshed and rejuvenated. You know what makes you feel the most on top of the world- so put that on the top of your holiday list! >>>

Make sure you’re getting enough sun. As the holidays approach, the days also get shorter and colder. Sometimes it’s hard to get outside when the sun is up, if you work during the daylight hours, and sometimes it’s just plain too cold outside! However, a lack of natural sunlight in the winter months can lead to fatigue, low mood, weakened immune system and even apathy for some. Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD). Is a real disorder defined as the experience of feeling more sad and depressed in winter months of from any last of sun exposure. Yes, believe it or not this can even be true in sunny blue skies of Colorado! Exposure to the sun does two very important things in the body. First, it triggers a response that tells our brains that it’s time to be awake, productive and energetic. Second, it triggers the production of Vitamin D, which can also affect our mood when we don’t have enough of it. Exposure to natural sunlight, first thing in the morning is important as this aide in the production of serotonin which helps us to feel awake and energized in the day- and sleepy at night. (Seratonin is a part of medications given to people with depression- so go get your own 100% serotonin from the sun!) Perhaps the best way to combat the winter blues issues might be to consider a vitamin D3 supplement. Vitamin D seems to improve levels of serotonin, a neurotransmitter that affects mood and sense of wellbeing. Insufficient vitamin D can lead to a some levels of symptoms of depression. As a good idea about all supplements- speak to your health care provider, for not all things are good for all people. Breathe - yes - intentionally focusing on changing the rate and speed at which we do the most involuntary of actions can be profound! The way we breathe has a huge effect on our feelings of stress and to our whole system. It affects many aspects of the body from heart rate and blood pressure, stress hormone production. So, try this out- breathe in for a count of 5, and really allow your lungs and belly to expand as you breath in. Hold this breath for a count of 2. Breathe out through your mouth for a count of 7- yes I said 7…. while you are getting all the air out. Breathe in again for a count of 5 and hold for 2, out for 7. Repeat until your heart rate and the physical responses to stress are lessened. Put on your “to do” list lots of time for connecting with people who lift your spirits and make you feel good! Be open and honest with these few treasured people about the struggles. It will deepen these relationships-and may lead them to express to you their true hearts. Friends are the family that we get to choose, so care for them deeply and reward yourself by being around those friends that truly feel your soul. Make a list for the shopping for the cooking and cleaning and most importantly for the fun. Create balance by doing some of the most difficult cleaning or shopping on a day that you have something extra fun to do that evening. Not only will you feel accomplished, but the fun will also “feel” all the more fun. Balance in this season of business is worth prioritizing. Give yourself a break!! Really, are you so sure that your Mother-in-Law will care about the dust under your 5 year-old’s bed? Can she really see it? Really, your best friend will never speak to you again if you buy the side dish as opposed to picking up something from King Soopers on the way to the party? Really?? Give yourself a reality check and stay connected to thinking logically and leaving the overly emotional self talk in the “snow” bank! It’s very easy to feel that the holidays are great for everyone because you are working triple time to make it that way! This is your holiday time too. Be kind, forgiving and loving of yourself. There is no such thing as the “perfect holiday” and you are not in charge of completely manifesting it! Pour a glass of something festive and do your best to bring cheer-from a place of health and happiness, for this will make for a much better holiday season, if you do.

PET ADOPTION AND THE HOLIDAYS

H by Jamie Bessko

The holiday season is upon us and its that time of year when many people will be receiving animals as gifts. Giving a pet as a gift can either be a dream come true or an eventual nightmare. There are common scenarios that contribute to the success or failure of giving pets as gifts for the holidays. A few tips to consider: If you’re getting a new pet for your family for the holidays, make sure that everyone is in agreement about who will be responsible to take care of the animal. Most of the responsibilities will fall on the adults in the home. Just because you want to surprise your kids with a pet, does not mean they are ready for the responsibility to care for the animal. If the children cannot fulfill their daily animal care responsibilities, the adults need to step in and take over. If the adults are not on board with that plan, they shouldn’t be getting a pet for their kids. Don’t expect children to follow through on their commitments or make the animal a priority in their life. As long as the child is still a minor, the adults need to be actively involved in the animal’s welfare.

PETS

A few tips to consider:

About the Author: Jaime Bessko lives in Erie, Colorado with her husband, 2 boys, 2 dogs and 2 cats. She is the owner of ERIE DOG CO, LLC, specializing in behavior modification for dogs Colorado. Jaime’s philosophy on working with dogs is to communicate clearly, be consistent, praise your dog and HAVE FUN! Some of her favorite pastimes are hiking, snowboarding, painting

Take a realistic account of how much time you have to commit to your new pet. Some animals are much more maintenance than others. Choose a pet that fits with your lifestyle, schedule and most importantly, your ENERGY LEVEL. If you’re adding a canine friend, be sure to always pick a dog that has LESS ENERGY that you. In my experience, that seems to be the largest contributing factor towards either a fulfilling or frustrating relationship. There are many animals in shelters and rescues that are perfectly healthy, ideal companions and are waiting for the right home. Adding a pet to your home should never be an impulse buy. It should be a well thought out family decision to ensure a fulfilling and long-lasting, loving relationship.

ADDING A PET TO YOUR HOME SHOULD NEVER BE AN IMPULSE BUY. IT SHOULD BE A WELL THOUGHT OUT FAMILY DECISION TO ENSURE A FULFILLING AND LONG-LASTING, LOVING RELATIONSHIP.

TAKE THE STRESS OUT OF HOLIDAY COOKIE BAKING

Y by Connie Ruel

Yikes! Cookie season is just around the corner! Though you love the constant smell of buttery sweetness wafting from your oven, just thinking of holiday baking stress has you running for Prozac. You’re already lamenting the impossibility to “have it all”. The parties, shopping, holiday events, playing Santa and being Susy homemaker, pumping out dozens and dozens of Cookies has your head spinning already. Isn’t the season a time to share love, peace, joy and holiday cheer? All you’ve been known to do in years past is frantically run around the kitchen spewing green pea soup while your head spins in circles. I am here to help you with all that. Instead of taking one or two days to make 1,500 cookies, start now, and take your time, so that when the month of December comes, most of your cookie work is already done. Here are some pointers on making ahead and having fresh homemade cookies to hand out during the yuletide.

FOOD

Cookie season is just around the corner!

Freezing Drop cookie dough freezes very well before it has been baked. In fact, most drop cookies are better baked off chilled (it’s a butter thing). The best way is to flash freeze them. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper and ball or drop your cookies onto it (you don’t need to leave a space between them). Then put the sheet in the freezer for about an hour. Transfer the solid balls into a freezer bag and when your ready to bake, just pull them out, place on a parchment lined sheet (this time with a couple of inches between them) and pop them in the oven. This also gives you the chance to make as few or as many as you need for the time- they are always fresh. Most cookie doughs will last about 3 months in the freezer. Make sure you date the package and put the oven temperature and baking time on the bag (adjust your baking time a minute or two since they will be going into the oven frozen). >>>

Runny or cake like batters won’t freeze well so save those cookies for last minute baking. You can freeze them though, after baking. This works great with brownies, blondies or more cakey cookies. They should be stored in plastic storage containers lined with parchment and covered with a second parchment layer. Make sure you wrap the container in a few layers of plastic wrap. Thaw at room temperature outside the bag for about 10 minutes. Storing How you hold your baked goods is important too. Make sure your cookies have cooled completely before trying to store them. If you pack them warm, you will create condensation in the container and the cookies become soggy and wet. Make sure you pack cookies with like flavors together. For example, never pack a cinnamon flavored cookie with chocolate cookies or worse peppermint cookies. Their flavors all meld into one. If you have meticulously decorated or iced your cookies make sure you let the icing harden completely before packing and put a sheet of waxed paper between each layer. Hope these few tips were helpful. I wanted to share my favorite versatile chocolate chip cookie recipe, fool proof and fabulous! Connie’s Versatile Chocolate Chip Cookies (These cookies make great sandwich cookies filled with marshmallow fluff, whipped chocolate ganache, or peanut butter frosting (as examples). Sprinkle the top of the sandwich with powdered sugar.) 2 ¼ cup AP flour 1 tsp baking soda 1 1/4 tsp salt 1 cup unsalted butter, softened ¾ cup granulated sugar ¾ cup brown sugar 2 tsp hazelnut liqueur or amaretto 2 eggs, room temperature 1 1/2 cups semi sweet chocolate chips (or one cup dark chocolate and one cup white) (add 1 up of chopped nuts if you like) Combine flour salt and baking soda in a small bowl and set aside. In a mixer, cream softened butter with white and brown sugar, mix in hazelnut liqueur then add eggs one at a time mixing well after each one. Beat in flour mixture a little at a time until all combined. Stir in chocolate chips. Drop onto cookie sheet with parchment paper then put into the fridge for 5-10 minutes. Bake at 350F for four min then turn to 180F and bake four more minutes. The cookies should look undercooked. Remove from oven and cool on a wire rack. If you are making smaller cookies for sandwiches bake at 350F for 6-8 minutes.
