ou often describe music as a “release like no other”. Can you elaborate on that? For me music gives me the space to feel what I need to feel at that moment. It is not something you can really describe to someone because that release is different for everyone. I just hope that my music can allow some release for those who listen. You are known as a pop singer with millions of downloads on many platforms, but I know you also love jazz. What is it about jazz that moves you? I grew up singing jazz and being trained mainly as a jazz singer. That began really because I have a very raspy and low voice which fits for jazz music. When I sing jazz I feel the most as myself as a singer. One has so much freedom and movement within jazz music and it gives you the space to be creative with your voice and most music does not do that. There is a video on Instagram of you singing a Joni Mitchell song that was so beautiful it brought tears to my eyes. What inspired you to perform something from her oeuvre? That performance was actually for a play I was in so the song wasn't my choice. The first time I sang it which was a few years ago, something just clicked. Those are my favorite moments… when you hear a song, you sing it and it just fits your voice perfectly…you feel like it's yours. That is how I feel with a lot of old music and especially with this song.

I know that philanthropy is important to you. You have done work in Africa related to AIDS and have been involved with The Michael Phelps Foundation. How did you choose these causes? My work in Africa and with Global Livingston Institute came as an opportunity when I was 15 years old. The organization's founder, who has become a lifelong mentor and friend, told me I should come to Uganda since I was so passionate about international work and relations…I did and never looked back. My work with GLI is truly my passion and has guided me on the life path that I am on today. I focus mainly on sustainability of education in rural villages. This work has led me into my work in teaching and international relations. In terms of The Michael Phelps Foundation, I was a competitive swimmer until I was 18 years old, so swimming is really in my blood. Water safety also became a passion of mine. When my family was introduced to Michael Phelps, it was a dream come true. Getting involved with his foundation and ensuring that all children have access to water safety programs is so important to me. In addition to music and your charitable work, you are now also a teacher. How did you come to that calling?

If you could only listen to one genre of music for the rest of your life what would it be? If I could only listen to one genre of music for the rest of my life, it would probably be classic rock or indie pop. But truth be known…I grew up with the classics and that is truly what I love the most! Who are the singers in history that most inspire you and which contemporary artists do you follow?

Lucky for me I absolutely love teaching and I fell in love with it. Education is truly a path to liberation…I am dedicated to ensuring that for the children I teach.

Growing up I did a lot of international travel and work. It was all centered around education. While in college I studied International Relations (including nonprofits). My goal was to be in Education Policy. My thoughts were that in order to reach that goal, I needed to start in the classroom. Lucky for me I absolutely love teaching and I fell in love with it. Education is truly a path to liberation…I am dedicated to ensuring that for the children I teach.

Elton John is my idol and I do not hide it. My room is a bit of a shrine to him. His music is truly what inspires me the most and it has since I was a little girl. I was also raised on music by Prince, The Beatles, Queen, Red Hot Chili Peppers, John Denver, etc. My parents instilled this love of the classics into me at a very young age. Hence I would say that those are the artists that inspired me to sing. Now my favorite band is the Lumineers and music that falls into their genre. I am not a big fan of mainstream pop but I get most of my song recommendation from my sister. She has an amazing way of finding hidden gems that are not always the norm. Is there a type of music you would never sing?

No, not that I know of! Although, I am not a big fan of singing country music. Which of your songs is your personal favorite? It is a tie between “All We Had” and “Shine Through the Rain”. Both of those songs really spoke to the place I was at in my life at the time…they mean the world to me.

Denver is on the rise with young, vital residents in addition to a multitude of new arrivals bursting with passion and a longing for the Colorado lifestyle. The Rocky Mountain setting is a huge draw with some of the world’s top ski resorts, challenging hiking trails and an outdoor lifestyle that is unsurpassed. Before “green” was the trendy catchphrase, Denver was an enormous step ahead of the pack with conceivably more green space and parks than any other large city in the country as well a magnitude of historic neighborhoods with capricious personalities. South Pearl Street gives the impression that a huge blanket infused with magic was tossed over the neighborhood where Americana dances with the mom and pop boutiques, the superlative dining selections, and moving in a sprightly two-step with the South Pearl Bohemian lifestyle. A 10 minute drive southeast from downtown Denver, the neighborhood stretching from Buchtel to Jewell avenues is a step back to the late 1800’s and early 1920’s with homes dissimilar in style and concept. It appears the builders of the day - each with huge egos - were trying to one-up one another with Colonial Revival, Neoclassical and Mediterranean Revival architecture, using red brick as a favored material. Many of the houses were designed with a front porch where residents would sit in the evenings as they watched the horse and buggies pass by and chatted with the strollers. A forest of towering leafy trees with 20 shades of green border both sides of the residential streets and have left their mark where strong legs can skip over a minefield of sorry sidewalks. But regardless, South Pearl is a precious jewel where builders have not moved in with claws bared and demolished an historic collection of architecture. Farmers Market Supreme One of Denver’s top farmers markets with character and charisma to spare opens for business every Sunday, early May to mid-December, from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. South Pearl Street is closed to traffic between Iowa and Arkansas streets, and this is where Denverites take great pleasure in a clean and refreshing market. They can be seen lugging boxes of peaches to their cars and shopping farm-fresh Colorado produce such as sweet corn from Olathe. Stands offer tasty treats from Guatemala, Mexico and Poland as well as and French-style crepes. People are standing in line at the popular Latin stand headed by Columbians from Cartagena who love Denver and know the secrets for a tasty tamale. Visitors can have their garden tools sharpened or get a shot of B12 for a quick energy boost. Tables are available where customers can relax and enjoy the setting while they listen to live music from a two guitar trio with a vocalist showcasing a two octave range.

The D in Denver is for Dogs. The “D” in Denver is without a doubt for Dogs and their dog-loving owners who know how to cleverly manage a leash. It’s a city of canine aficionados, and when they visit the South Pearl Street Farmers Market, many of the dogs know one another, sniff noses and gossip about the new dogs who haven’t yet figured out how to dodge clumsy feet. The Pearl Street shopkeepers leave bowls of water for the dogs and chairs with cushions and a table overnight on the sidewalk for strollers. It’s that kind of place. Beyond the Farmers Market, South Pearl is jumping with the Second Star to the Right Book store covered with colors Disney would love, and Stella’s Coffee House serving tasty lattes with a dog-friendly patio, live music, and photos of their employees proudly displayed. Three friends from Japan opened Tokyo Premium Bakery, which is great for breakfast, a full expresso bar, freshly baked croissants, brioches, shokupan milk bread, matcha and green tea lattes, and other appetizing Japanese specialties. Steps away is Kaos Pizzeria which has been honored for Denver’s Best Garden Patio and serving wood-fired pizzas Naples-style. Uno Mas Taqueria with take you to Mexico, while Izakaya, is recognized as the best restaurant in Denver for sushi. Long lines patiently wait on the sidewalk for a table in the attractive two-level restaurant, where the executive Chef and staff serve small plates, a popular catch of the day sourced from a Japanese fish market, and other aquatic specialties flown direct from Japan. During the summer and fall there is even more fun on First Fridays, June 1, to October 1, from 4 to 9 p.m. South Pearl Street is alive with local artists, live music, dining, shopping and loads of smiles throughout an artsy cultural evening. “South Pearl Street is a secret oasis in Denver,” said Mike Schrobo, a businessman, and his attractive wife Joanna, an RN working at the Swedish Medical Center, living in a 1904 home on South Pearl Street with two energetic dogs. “It’s a cozy street with boutique shops and restaurants that’s perfect for date night without the hustle of the city. It’s an incredible charming area with a must-see farmers market every Sunday, the city’s best sushi restaurant and a great mix of quiet cafes and fresh bakeries. What else do you need.” southpearlstreet.com

Gaby Aghion – Chloe Exemplified Richard Carroll

“The world was opening up before my eyes, and I believed I could do anything. I felt I had wings” -Gaby Aghion (cofounder of Chloe)

“Gaby Aghion – Chloe Exemplified” Richard Carroll

Gaby Aghion, unrestrained, innovative, and remarkably motivated, was ahead of her time by a generation: her insightful and perceptive vision transformed the world of fashion across the globe with a monumental swath of ingenious marketing. Change and transformation persistently embody the essence of fashion, yet her artistic heritage and mode is closely related to the brilliance of Coco Chanel, modification being the visualization for both Aghion and Chanel. Gaby Aghion confronted global views of the day and moved fashion beyond musty and tired boundaries, inspiring a merger and multiplication of talents among the designers she hired.

Alexandria, Egypt Gabrielle Hanoka, born March 3, 1921, to a high-achieving and affluent petite bourgeoisie Jewish family in Alexandria, was fortunately blessed with a compassionate and fashion-forward mother and a hard-working father, prosperous and educated with Greek and Italian ancestries, who managed a thriving cigarette plant.. The second largest city in Egypt, Alexandria lies along the northern coast of the Mediterranean Sea and was cosmopolitan with a large and vibrant Jewish population that was flourishing during Gabrielle’s years there. The youngest of seven children, her given name, shortened to Gaby, held throughout her lifetime.

Aghion understood that creating forward-looking, fashionable attire was among the world’s most diverse artistic endeavors and was an obvious necessity for expanding fashion horizons. She flipped the switch to a daily cue that fashion is unpredictable, like the fleeting seasons and life itself. Devising an inspired concept created for mass appeal, she was driven to achieve a fresh look and inspired to embark on a unique crusade to introduce affordable, high-quality fashion from individual designers, well-constructed clothes that were factory-made with deliberate choice of fabric color and placement of accessories. Free spirited, attractive, and innovative, she was the proud forerunner of Pret-a-porter, her term for the luxury readyto-wear garments which revolutionized the fashion industry. “Conformist” was an adjective that Gaby readily tossed aside.

Madame Hanoka Gabrielle’s elegant and fashionable mother, a huge influence in her daughter’s life, was a la Parisienne and shared with her young daughter a love of France and French fashion. With her mother’s appreciation for everything French, Gabrielle was predestined for a French-style education: her parents enrolled her in a French school and, having a good ear, Gabrielle soon became fluent in French. Madame Hanoka, avidly admiring the world of French fashion, obtained duplicates of the latest Parisian couture, and had them carefully copied and sewn to measure, and at that time must have been among the best dressed women in Alexandria, if not all Egypt. Gaby’s mother introduced her to a diversity of fine fabrics, and instilled an appreciation and respect for superior design patterns while Gaby was still a young teenager.

Her French schooling was a significant chapter in the life of Gabrielle Hanoka, influencing her destiny like a passage plucked from a romantic teenage sweetheart novel. If it was not love or enchantment for Gabrielle and Raymond Aghion, it is something yet to be defined. They first met in the French School when both were seven years old. Raymond was born into a wealthy and well-known leading Jewish family of prosperous cotton exporters, and throughout their school years, despite all the drama and havoc of youth, they clung together, first as school mates and then as life-long lovers. Hometown Chaos Gaby’s first visit to Paris came at age 18 when she was a foreign student and she essentially fell in love at first sight. A year later she married Raymond in Paris, beginning her one and only marriage in the city that would eventually pull her away from Alexandria. The couple moved permanently to Paris in 1945, a year that was both momentous and devastating. With anti-Jewish riots fomenting in Cairo and Alexandria alongside the rise of Islamic fundamentalism, Alexandria Muslims were creating turmoil for Egypt’s Jewish families in 1945 and years following. Jews were gradually forced out of public jobs, their schools placed under observation, and teachers forced to adopt an Arab-dedicated curriculum. When Israel declared independence in 1948, thousands of Egyptian Jews were arrested and placed in camps, while thousands of others managed to flee Egypt for Israel. Thankfully, Gaby and Raymond chose Paris instead.

Paris – Gaby’s Pret-a porter Far from the chaos and restrictions deepening in Alexandria, Gaby was experiencing a newly unrestricted Paris. World War II had just ended, and a battered Europe was searching for new life. Gabrielle, described as a darkhaired avant-garde beauty, settled with her husband on the Left Bank where they mingled with writers, artists, and the literary elite of the day. Raymond was avidly left-leaning and active politically, while Gaby was eager to move out in the world on her own. Inheriting a love of fashion from her mother, she devised a fashion movement while shrewdly analyzing the effects of the war, the buying power of the public, and the limited supply of fabric. She was on the outside of conventional or predictable fashion, looking in with a sharp eye and a perceptive fashion sense. In 1952, working from a small room in her flat, she employed an accomplished seamstress and created a collection of affordable and feminine cotton dresses that could be effortlessly altered to fit and quickly made ready-to-wear. She was enamored with the name Chloe and decided her label, unlike the eponymous labels of most designers, would be tagged ‘Chloe’, a name she borrowed from her animated and vibrant friend, Chloe Huymans. With visions of growth, she piled her collection into her car and visited Parisian boutiques with great success.

Café de Flore Gaby’s Pret-a porter first Spring-Summer fashion show in 1956 with business partner Jacque Lenoir was a smash at the legendary Café de Flore. The art deco café, deliciously unpredictable and among the oldest café’s in Paris dating to the 1800’s, was the center of intellectual life and a place to be seen, hosting literary meetings and famous clientele including Truman Capote, Brigette Bardot, Belmond, Hemingway, Picasso, and the pillars of Parisian artistic life. With her elegant bohemian spirit and her expertly tailored, youthful, and feminine ready-made garments, Gaby offered a clear contrast to the dull fusty style of the 1950’s and was warmly welcomed by the French press and the Parisian women she designed for. With a brilliant eye for skill and proficiency, she selected excellent designers such as Phoebe Philo, Stella McCartney, and Hannah MacGibbon, along with Karl Lagerfeld who became a close friend and the pillar of her label. Gaby opened her first Parisian boutique in 1972, followed by countless others world-wide, and has dressed such fashion icons as Princess Grace Kelly of Monaco, Brigette Bardo, Madonna, and Jackie Kennedy Onassis, an avid client. Awarded the French Legion of Honor in 2013, Gabrielle passed away in 2014, age 93 in her beloved Paris. Gabrielle Aghion possessed a happy spirit and always followed her heart.

Of Note Today, in Gaby’s hometown of Alexandria, there are only a handful of Jewish citizens remaining. chloe.com

Q A

Tell us a bit about your background: My parents met at Southern Illinois University, married and moved to St. Louis, MO where I lived until I was 5 when my younger sister was born and we moved to my mom’s hometown of Princeton, Illinois. My mom, dad, grandmother and grandfather were in the retail business together for many years. My great grandfather was a mortician in Princeton. I met my wife in college and after I graduated from Illinois State University my wife and I moved to Princeton. My wife worked for my dad. I worked for Pioneer Hi-Bred (a seed company for the farming industry) as “MIS Director.” My wife’s from Plainfield, which is a Chicago suburb. We moved to Chicago and I worked for the Midwest Stock Exchange as a software developer. Oracle Software recruited me away from the stock exchange. At Oracle I met 2 amazing guys who became my business partners of 23 years. We owned and operated the largest Oracle consulting firm in the county, The Ultimate Software Consultants (TUSC) until we sold it to Rolta, an India-based. I spent 3 years traveling to India every quarter. I started, owned and operated 3 other software as a service companies. IntelliReal, which we sold to Equifax; Intelivideo, which is still independent today; and Onemata, which is a data company based here in Denver.

Q A

How did you get in the jam business? I’ve always been interested in food businesses. I always thought I would make candy, but after trying an amazing homemade Raspberry Jalapeno jam in California I knew i needed to start Brad B Jammin. At first it was a hobby, but like most things I do, if the concept works, I can’t resist scaling it up to a real business. We’re in our 4th year of business now.

Q A

How do you distribute and market the goods? We started at farmers markets - specially the South Pearl Street Farmers Market in Denver. Our 2nd year we went from 1 market to 25 a week! Last year we scaled back to about 12 markets a week and this year we scaled back up. We also do a number of holiday events. I bought Blue Owl Preserves from Katie and she was already in Whole Foods and about 100 other stores. We market directly to stores and we go through distributors.

Q Where do you get the ingredients and how many flavors do you offer? A We have over 100 flavors believe it or not! We source everything we can locally.

Jalapeno Jam Cocktails • 1 tablespoon of jalapeno jam • 3 ounces of vodka or tequila • ice Servings: 1 Instructions: What else can I do with my Jalapeno Jam other than put it on cream cheese? Consider a cocktail! Simply add a couple of tablespoons of Jalapeno Jam to a shaker, add your preferred amount of vodka or tequila ( I find 1 tablespoon of jam to 3 oz of liquid about right myself) add some ice... shake until the jam dissolves... and VOILA! Refreshment with a Jalapeno kick! bradbjammin.com 303.513.1149 6518 S. Broadway Littleton, CO 80121

Colorado Luxury Ranches Trisha Ventker

The Colorado weather gods were smiling upon me as the fluid expression of climate urged me to enjoy that unique moment when dusk gently settles, the mountains change from a bustling nature hike to a warm sensuous waltz, and the sparkle of the evening lights reflect on the changing landscape in effortless mosaic-like patterns. Gazing across the expanse at the sculptured mountains that appear with astonishing immediacy, I realize that nature truly refreshes my being. After months of lockdowns and cancelled events, the spirit of the evening calls me to silence my cell phone, embrace the setting, disconnect with the everyday stresses of life, and enjoy Devil’s Thumb Ranch Resort & Spa. It’s not my first visit here, and this trip reminded me that Devil’s Thumb’s rugged individualism and robust scenery, only 75 miles west of Denver, is a world set apart. I like to think that when the pioneers selected the location for their homes and ranches they chose Tabernash for the magnificent vistas, for the elk and moose who calmly linger in the meadows where horses have open land to enjoy a romp, and for an astonishing night sky that seems to sit low on the horizon. The family-owned hotel dates to the 1930s when Margarite Ratcliff built the original homestead in the community of Tabernash and opened a working dairy ranch with the tastiest Jersey cow milk this side of Denver. Over the years, the property evolved, becoming a vacation hotel in 1946, and a five-star destination in 2001, when Bob and Suzanne Fanch restructured Devil’s Thumb to preserve its history and make sustainability a top priority. Paramount for me is that the Ranch revolves around open space which I feel encourages a sense of freedom with sweeping views of 6,500 acres of Rocky Mountain wilderness, and the sense of returning to the days before cars replaced horses. Fashion West Photoshoot Devil’s Thumb’s architectural ensembles are rooted deeply in the traditions of Colorado and I selected it as the perfect background for a Fashion West photoshoot that debuted August 15 & 16. Denver’s largest fashion show emphasizes national brands, bourgeoning designers, handcrafted art from local artisans, boutiques, dazzling runway models, makeup artists and hairstylists, all celebrating fashion from the insight and essence of the American West. I’m also honored that Denver Colorado Luxury Magazine was a sponsor of this wonderful Denver showcase.

Denver Colorado Luxury Magazine’s Fashion Director, Charlie Price will be using the photoshoot images for his new and stylish Fashion West Magazine that will showcase the Fashion West Show. His crew, consisting of photographer Chad Chisholm, talented makeup artist, Tiaja Pierre, and two male models, one of whom is Charlie’s partner, made the most of the setting working with wonderful drive and dynamism, shooting both interior and exterior locations and keeping the splendor of Colorado shining. An Inspired Executive Chef Executive Chef Ernest Bledsoe indeed comprehends the pleasure of Colorado ranch cuisine. After a day’s wrap, I dined with the crew at either the historic Ranch House Restaurant & Saloon or Heck’s Tavern with its floor-to-ceiling fireplace, our favorite gathering place for light bites and craft beers which were de rigueur. Executive Chef Bledsoe features New American Mountain Ranch fare, prepared with fresh, locally sourced, seasonal ingredients, and suggests the famed Wagyu Burger. Devil’s Thumb, a working ranch, is home to a herd of 150 Wagyu cattle that originated in Japan with a genetic strain dating back over 35,000 years. I was told the ranch is one of very few locations in the nation to breed and serve full-blood Wagyu, arguably the finest beef in the world. During my three-day stay, I enjoyed the Chef’s lightly grilled Colorado Striped Bass, a tasty Stuffed Sweet Potato, a delightful salad created with baby iceberg lettuce, bits of bacon, red onions, tomato, and gorgonzola drizzled with a light vinaigrette dressing, a succulent Rocky Mountain Sausage Flight, and a steaming dish of Wagyu Chili. It was rise and shine with Wagyu Steak & Eggs or a Veggie Benedict, and during the evenings under a starry sky, I had my share of the complimentary s’mores at the outdoor fire-pit. The Ranch House Restaurant and Saloon was honored with Open Table Diner’s 2020 choice for Best American and Best Special Occasion Restaurant. I was told the restaurant is situated on the original homestead, and when dining there are views of grassy open land and bird life. The heavy interior beams first caught my eye and no wonder, the design was inspired by the famed Timberline Lodge, Mt. Hood, Oregon, using the same style of craftsmanship with large posts and beams sourced from 800-year-old Douglas Fir from Vancouver Island. Dining in the Ranch House. The tradition of ranch house cooking is alive and well here and absolutely over the top appealing. Sometimes we did make our own breakfasts and lunches, but the friendly Hallowed Grounds Coffee Shop at the south end of the lodge across from the ski shop serves freshly baked breakfast pastries and bread from their bakery, sandwiches, coffee, beer, and wine, which are ideal if heading out for a hike, horseback jaunt, or a sunbath at the pool.

Lodgings The ranch offers 105 bedrooms with Native American and Scandinavian accents, and western, antique-style furnishing throughout. I stayed with Charlie and his crew in a rustic, yet lush four-bedroom cabin with three baths, spacious soaking tubs, living area, kitchen, and heated flooring from environmentally friendly geothermal sources. The cabins offer privacy and your own space for peaceful reflection. They also have rooms in the lodge if you prefer more social interaction, or at the Guest House which is mountain-rustic with a touch of modern vibe and the option of all-inclusive packages or lodging-only, if you desire. Salient Sustainability The Ranch has a genuine feeling of being tied to the earth and nature: throughout 13 years they planted an incredible 10,000 trees, installed Colorado’s largest privately-owned solar panel system and a state-ofthe-art water filtration system, and for those who love honey, retained a certified beekeeper on property. The stone used to build the fireplace came from a nearby rockslide and from the fireplace in the original 1937 Ranch homestead, which is now the Ranch House Restaurant & Saloon. Thankfully, only two percent of the 6,500-acre resort has been developed. I feel these elements connect the Lodge to its natural environment, details I hope you’ll appreciate as much as I do. This trip was part work but lots of relaxing, too. I soaked in the Hot Tub, as did the others. Charlie enjoyed a hike and a dip in the pool, and Tiaja booked a horseback lesson. There are miles of hiking trails, zip-lining, cross country skiing, and fat tire mountain biking, too. For me, Devil’s Thumb is a stress-free luxury property without an ego, a Colorado destination that sparkles with passion. When You Go If looking to build your own mountain home, homesites start at $750,000 with only 24 currently available. Weddings and meetings can accommodate up to 250 guests. devilsthumbranch.com (970) 726-5632 ext. 716 3530 County Rd 83, Tabernash, CO 80478

Strolling about Vista Verde, my imagination wanders creating vivid images in my brain of roughly clothed, dust-covered explorers on weary horses, creaky wagons with families of pioneers wondering if this is the place, Ute Indians standing guard in the thick forest of pines, a lumbering bulky black bear and her cubs foraging for food, all beneath a brilliant sky filled with enormous ominous clouds. It’s that kind of place. I’m wowed by Colorado history that comes vividly to life before my very eyes, the mindful log cabin architecture, and the blend of design and innovation stirring emotions of years gone by. The all-inclusive 540-acre ranch, at 7,720 feet altitude, dates back to those resilient and determined Homesteaders looking for a new life. History reveals Vista Verde was first a cattle ranch; the time-worn homestead cabin near the lodge was constructed in 1936, then later the Ranch was a rural getaway destination for fishing and hunting aficionados, and finally in 1970 a guest dude ranch was in place. Yet I cannot think of Vista Verde as a dude ranch; it is in my mind, an authentic Old West Colorado Luxury Ranch, a comfortably remote oasis with both soft adventure and a calming quality that is so in need these days. The 50-guest property tucked away in the Elk River Valley, within the Routt National Forest, 25 miles north of Steamboat Springs, gives adventurous visitors a chance to make the most of the picturesque mountain environs, while others who take it slow and easy will also be rewarded. A Horse Named Hank Routt National Forest, a rarefied setting for Vista Verde, encompasses 1.1 million acres of wilderness stretching to the Wyoming border with a profusion of mountain ranges, lakes, rivers, and ponds, miles of trails for hiking, biking, and guided horseback outings, cross country skiing in winter, fly fishing for the skilled, rock climbing for the fit, and amazing ever-changing weather patterns. An enormous enjoyment and a surprise to me, are the Ranch’s 100 American saddle horses whose wranglers work the herd, keeping them strong and vigorous. I learned to communicate with a horse named Hank with gorgeous eyes and a colossal tail. Hank seemed to know that I was sensitive and adored animals. He would put his head on my shoulder when I asked him to give me a hug. I enjoyed a short ride and led him around the large indoor riding arena designed for riding lessons and clinics. On another day, I vigorously brushed down some of the horses in a nearby pasture, while Wendy my travel friend, enjoyed a trail ride.

Vista Verde is aptly named, from the Spanish for Green View, and the area is a destination in its own right with endless options and a close connection to nature, but what most seduces at the Ranch are the little details that make one feel comfortable such as responsive and amicable service, and attention and consideration to your specific choice of activities. One of my favorite moments was soaking in a hot tub watching birds flying overhead in a cloud splashed sky. Vista Verde has 12 log cabins each with a deck hot tub, plus three additional guest rooms in the lodge, all named after nearby rivers, lakes, and mountains. Our cabin was named Hinman. I checked the name and there is a Hinman Park Creek Trail, Hinman Lake, Hinman Creek, and Hinman Park Campground, so I guess we’re in good company. Cabin Distinction The sizeable two-floor Hinman cabin speaks to quality, with a warm and comfy homeaway-from-home ambience, a bedroom and bath for each of us, pine wood beds, finely crafted, handmade log furniture, western art, a gas fireplace to relax in front of with a sip of wine on a chilly evening, and, thankfully, a coffeemaker to help start the day. Creature comforts come full circle in the Italian linens, a spa robe and, of course, the outdoor hot tub. The authentic character of the cabin’s comes full force when you discover there is not a jarring television or telephone to be found. Vista Verde sincerely wants guests to relish a sense of place, feel the spirit of nature, and revive the art of conversation. The Lodge is an equally lux experience. When I first entered the Great Room, it looked like the elaborate set from a block-buster Hollywood movie designed to spark curiosity about life on a luxurious ranch estate and revive the tickle of an incessant travel itch. A large stone fireplace amidst a wall of windows, a complex crisscross of ceiling beams, a chandelier to set the mood, and the art of carpentry and craftsmanship from top to bottom, combine to create a Lodge jam packed with personality. Culinary Stimulus The impressive duo of Executive Chef Jonathon Gillespie, originally from Virginia, and Food & Beverage Director Cholly McGlynn have earned a sack full of awards for their Ranch Cuisine, and for cooking classes and wine tasting events sourced from their private wine cellar. Breakfast is ranch-style hearty, lunch can be enjoyed on the deck with forest views, and in the evenings after a day on the trail, a stylish dinner to rival any in Denver is graciously served. I sipped a 2018 French Sancerre and took great pleasure in a mixed organic Baby Green Salad with herbs, fresh cracked pepper, and a splash of zippy Frantoia virgin olive oil and aged balsamic vinegar. A Scottish salmon, lightly miso glazed with a classic and creamy Beurre Blanc butter sauce, accompanied by spiked Israeli couscous organic spring vegetables, supports the high quality upheld in the kitchen.

They also offer highly marbled Kobe beef certified from Kobe, Japan. The Ranch is filled with joy and pleasure. The two of us experienced an abundance of natural beauty while embracing the kindness and positive energy of the staff. When You Go Vista Verde, all-inclusive with tipping included, also offers a romantic adult-only vacation with a guest capacity of 30. vistaverde.com 800-526-7433 PO Box 770465 Steamboat Springs, CO 80477

Don’t Forget the Hands Tiaja Pierre

Don’t Forget the Hands Tiaja Pierre When we are born, we have the prefect skin. As we age hormones change and we experience different things that affect our skin. For example one might think that they are helping by ensuring they have enough sunlight exposure to ensure they have enough Vitamin D. Unfortunately it is a double-edge sword as too much sun exposure without sunblock can lead to sun damage. Even though skin is the largest organ of the body, each area of skin is different. Some skin is thinner than others. Many times people think to only put sunblock on the face and body and forget the hands. The hands are one of the body parts that show ones true age as they are exposed to the elements. There are not currently many modalities to reverse the aging process of the hands. Knowing this, it is vital to not only use sunblock for the hands during the day but to moisturize them as well. There are several types of sunblocks and moisturizers that work differently depending on what one is looking to achieve. Here are several suggestions for various issues when it comes to ones hands; Sunblock: Supergoop Hand Screen This product is not only rated as a SPF 40 but is specifically for ones hands. The product if quickly absorbed and does not leave a film. Age Spots: Strivectin Volumizing Hand Treatment This cream is formulated with a brightening complex that helps to minimize age spots while hyaluronic acid and volumizing spheres work together to nourish the skin and prevent the loss of elasticity. Crepey Skin: Medix 5.5Retinaol + Ferulic Acid This richly formulated cream works to shrink the appearance of wrinkles and dark spots while improving skin tone and elasticity. Anti-aging: Goldfaden MD, Hands to Heart This cream has the ability to even out skin, diminish age spots and the appearance of wrinkles using Retinol. Of course there are other issues that people experience with damage to their hands, but if one starts when they are younger and makes good habits, damage to the fragile skin of the hands can be minimized.

Moore For Life Michael Moore has worked in the cosmetics industry since 1988 with brand leaders such as Bobbi Brown Essentials, Chanel, and Estée Lauder. In New York City, he was often seen backstage during fashion week, supporting major designers such as Oscar de la Renta, Bob Mackie, and Vera Wang. Michael’s client list included Oscar winners, First Ladies of the United States, and royalty. Eventually, the quality of the Colorado lifestyle—the healthy, natural atmosphere that inspires his technique— drew him out west, where he opened Moore For Life in Denver’s own center of chic, Cherry Creek North.
