ED BUCK ARRESTED, CHARGED After Third Alleged Meth OD Victim Survives, Calls 911 LGBTQ political activist and prominent donor to the Democratic Party Ed Buck was arrested Tuesday, September 17 after a third alleged victim of meth overdose called 911 after nearly dying in Buck’s apartment last week. Prosecutors are calling Buck a “violent sexual predator who preys on men struggling with addiction and homelessness,” according to the LA Times. Buck is accused of injecting the 37-yearold victim with methamphetamine on Tuesday, September 11 at Buck’s West Hollywood resident, where the man over dosed, but survived and called 911. “I remain deeply concerned for the safety of people whose life circumstances may make them more vulnerable to criminal predators,” Los Angeles County District Attorney Jackie Lacey said. “With this new evidence, I authorized the filing of criminal

charges against Ed Buck.” Buck was charged with one felony count of battery causing serious injury, one felony count of administering methamphetamine and one felony count of maintaining a drug house, according to the LA County district attorney’s office. The arrest came months after activists and relatives of Buck’s previous alleged victims called on Lacey for criminal charges for the suspicious deaths of 26-year-old Gemmel Moore in 2017 and 55-year-old Timothy Dean this past January. Buck has not been charged with anything for either previous deaths in his home. “Me personally, I demand a full investigation. I really think this man, Buck, was involved,” Dean’s sister Joyce Jackson said shortly after Dean’s death, according to the New York Daily News. “I really believe he preyed on people. I think he’s sick. He

night and began acting “in a bizarre way” after he arrived at Buck’s apartment, as reported by Fox News. “This was just a longtime friend of 25 years, a longtime resident of West Hollywood,” Amster said, as reported by the New York Daily News. “He’s torn up. He’s devastated. He just lost a longtime friend.” “As far as we’re concerned, this is an accidental death,” Amster said shortly after Dean’s death. Last year, when the police ruled that there was insufficient evidence to charge Buck for anything regarding Moore’s death, Gemmel’s mother LaTisha Nixon, family friends and supporters were upset. They pointed to evidence that included a diary in which Moore claimed Buck paid him to inject the drug. In a December 2016 entry, Moore wrote: “I’ve become addicted to drugs and the worst one at that. Ed Buck is the one to thank. He gave me my first injection of crystal meth it was very painful, but after all the troubles, I became addicted…” In his final entry, on Dec. 3, 2016, Moore

wrote: “If it didn’t hurt so bad, I’d kill myself, but I’ll let Ed Buck do it for now.” Prosecutors are recommending bail be set at $4 million. If convicted as charged, Buck faces a possible maximum sentence of five years and eight months in state prison. Buck is due in court today for his arraignment. Deputy District Attorney Cynthia Barnes of the Major Crimes Division is prosecuting the case. The case remains under investigation by the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department. THE DATA IS IN

LA First County to Record LGBT+ Suicide, Murder Violence against the LGBTQ+ community is nothing new. This year, however, L.A. County has decided to do something about it. Thanks to a new motion passed on September 3, Los Angeles will become the first jurisdiction in the U.S. to start recording suspicious, violent, or unusual deaths of LGBTQ+ community members. While in the past, medical examiners weren’t encouraged to factor in sexual orientation and gender identity as part of their intake, L.A.’s step to record and study trends in anti-LGBTQ+ hate crimes marks a serious dedication to getting to the root of so many violent hate crimes and suicides. According to the motion: “The Federal Bureau of Investigation’s (FBI) statistics show that in 2017, 7,175 hate crimes were reported, 1,130 of which were based on sexual orientation bias and 119 on gender identity bias. According to the National Center for Transgender Equality, one in Coping with Dementia – This UCLA four transgender people have been assaulted research study provides group edusimply because they are transgender.” cation and counseling for families to Keeping tabs on LGBTQ+ murders, suiCoping with Dementia – This UCLA research provides group education andcides, counseling for families and assaults won’t just help raise help understand the diagnosis of dementia andstudy adjust to life changes. awareness of the issue. to help understand the diagnosis of dementia and adjust to life changes. that such actions are no longer tolerated,” writes Christopher J. Lyons, in a 2006 issue of Social Psychology Quarterly. Simply put: if the perpetrators of these crimes know they’re being watched, they’ll be less likely to endanger their own freedoms by engaging in hateful, violent acts against the queer community. The motion has had a lot of support in California, and in fact all over the country. In the United States, 68% of people favor including sexual orientation and gender identity in federal hate crimes law, according to a recent report by the Human Rights Campaign. If you look at the statistics, you’ll soon see why. This year alone, 18 trans women, mostly trans women of color, have been murdered, the most recent being Bee Love Slater, a young woman in Florida who was found burned to death in her car last week. Though investigators say it’s Queer youth are over three times as likely to attempt suicide or entertain suicidal thoughts as their straight counterparts. Suicide and hate crimes aren’t the only things endangering the community, either. According to the HRC, 30% of anti-LGB hate crimes are committed in the home, while transgender homicides are more likely to occur in public. Between homicide, suicide, and domestic abuse, the queer community has a lot to shield itself from, even in liberal areas like New York and Los Angeles. This motion represents a giant step forward on the part of concerned L.A. citizens, community members, and allies who want the violence to finally stop.

Christine Jorgensen in Los Angeles Meet the woman who changed everything.

The Chateau Marmont is nothing short of an L.A. institution. Home (at one point or another) to some of the world’s biggest and most scandalous stars of the 20th century, it’s the place where James Franco apparently rejected Lindsay Lohan’s advances, where Paz de la Huerta flashed half of Hollywood’s elite, and where Heath Ledger got high of an evening. It’s also the place where Christine Jorgensen, possibly the most famous trans woman in history, decided to settle for the long haul. If you don’t know who Jorgensen was, here are the Cliff ’s Notes: After World War II, in which Jorgensen served as a G.I. in the United States Army, the young woman travelled to Copenhagen in Denmark. There, after being diagnosed as transsexual rather than homosexual by her doctor, the “transsexual specialist “Christian Hamburger, she would undergo a two successful sex

reassignment surgeries in the early 1950s. During this conservative time in America, Jorgensen might have hid the details of her life from the world. Instead, she went public. Jorgensen burst onto the scene in 1952, causing a flurry of interest, shock, controversy, and sparking a national obsession that would change the course of history forever. “Ex G.I. Becomes Blonde Beauty!” newspaper headlines exclaimed, launching Jorgensen and her story into the spotlight. The young woman was offered acting roles in film and on the stage, as well as the chance to become one of the world’s first reality celebrities. Jorgensen, however, shied away from the spotlight, trying her best to live a vivacious, yet normal life, performing at cabarets and nightclubs. Later, becoming a distinguished speaker at schools and institutions all across the country. Jorgensen used her power to do good, creating a platform for people to talk seriously and without judgment about transgender issues. The filmmaker and transvestite Ed Wood used her story as inspiration for his 1953 “Glen or Glenda” (also known as “I Led

Though born in Utica, New York, it’s no surprise that Jorgensen chose Los Angeles as her home in the last few decades of her life. First at the Chateau Marmont, where she wrote her autobiography “Christine Jorgensen: A Personal Autobiography.” In her lifetime, Jorgensen was mocked, made fun of, and treated like a joke. She walked off her spot on the Dick Cavett show after the host’s rude questions got to be too much. A dignified, private person thrust into the spotlight, Jorgensen handled her ascension to fame with grace. Until the end of her life, she refused to be disrespected or treated poorly because of her difference. Instead, the paved the way for trans folks everywhere, showing us how glamorous, rich, and beautiful life could be, no matter your assigned gender. Toward the end of her life,

LILY THE PINK: Helping Women Look Their Best Sandy Allbright’s permanent makeup studio in Brentwood By Staff Writer For women who want to look their best all the time, a brow artist’s boutique studio in Brentwood offers the perfect solution. Lily The Pink, established by Sandy Allbright, a talented Los Angeles brow artist at the chic Sola Salon Studios on Wilshire Boulevard in Brentwood, creates, through permanent makeup and microblading, the ideal eyebrow that perfectly enhances her client's unique facial features. “Permanent makeup is for women who want to look their best all the time. For women who struggle with traditional makeup. For working moms who would like to save time every day. For active people: swimmers, divers, tennis players, sailors, gym-goers, hikers etc. For women who like to travel, its such a hassle to lug around makeup and mirrors. For people who have lost eyebrow hair due to alopecia and chemotherapy,” Allbright, said. “Every client is a unique individual with different aesthetics, bone structure and skin. We custom design the permanent makeup to naturally beautify each face while collaborating very closely with the client to make sure she is 100 percent happy before we begin.” According to Allbright, eyebrows are vitally important to the overall aesthetic of the face and can make or break a look. There is no need to appear tired or unpolished or spend hours trying to get brows even and symmetrical looking, permanent makeup is the perfect answer to this daily dilemma. Out of the many brow artists in the Los Angeles metro area, Allbright and Lily The Pink stands out for its attention to detail and professionalism at her sanitary, spotless, clean and OSHA compliant studio. “Lily the Pink is my passion. It merges my love of make-up and my love for helping people look and feel beautiful. As an eyebrow challenged individual, I found myself having to face the day with

a startlingly bare forehead or spend hours (yes, hours) getting my eyebrows to even look like actual eyebrows. I knew there had to be a better way,” Allbright said. “Enter the amazing world of permanent makeup and microblading. When I saw what could be done with this miraculous art form I was floored, I had to be a part of it, I had found my raison d’être.” Permanent makeup is less invasive than traditional tattooing and lasts between 1-3 years and Allbright works with only the highest quality pigments especially formulated for the face. “Permanent makeup has come a long way in the last five years, gone are the days of harsh and unnatural looking permanent makeup, we at Lily the Pink specialize in soft and natural-looking work that looks just like regular well-applied makeup except it does not smudge or smear or come off at the most inconvenient of times. It is a perfect marriage of art and science.” Allbright, who has lived in Santa Monica for 16 years, needless to say, loves her work and also serving her own community. “I am so glad to be able to serve the Westside with my talent in permanent makeup, I love this wonderful, active and engaged community and am excited to elevate their lives with my expertise. My aesthetic is natural, I want my clients to feel beautiful and confident and for people to not even realize that they had anything done, Allbright said. “So natural no-one will know but you.” For more information about Lily the Pink, visit LilyThePink.com, call (310) 592-6337 and follow on Facebook @lilylovespink, Instagram @ lilythepinkla and at https://www.yelp.com/biz/lilythe-pink-permanent-makeup-la-los-angeles

Relieving Pain with Gyrotonic at Body Rythm Shevi Baruch is using Gyrotonic and Gyrokinesis to help patients reduce pain and improve their lives. By Keldine Hull For twelve years, following a surgical procedure, Beth was often unable to stand or walk without some discomfort or pain. “It was sciatic nerve pain,” Beth explained. “It had to do with the lower back. I had my muscles in my abdomen cut because of a surgery. It’s really hard to engage your abdominal muscles so you’re incorrectly using your back muscles.” Even with a professional background in yoga, meditation and working with patients who suffered from chronic pain, Beth still struggled with learning how to use her body correctly to address her own pain issues without re-injuring herself. A friend introduced Shevi Baruch.

her to Gyrotonic®, a method of exercising that simultaneously stretches and strengthens your body with minimal efforts, while increasing range of motion, creating space in the joints, and strengthens the muscles around the bones. Beth decided to experience it for herself and started at Body Rhythm, located on Wilshire Boulevard in Santa Monica, working with the founder, Shevi Baruch, and Betty Townsley. “They really knew what they were doing,” Beth explained. “What I loved about working with Shevi is that she had the patience to meet me where I was at. While I felt better right away, it took a while before the pain that I came in for was completely gone. But it is. It’s really a miracle. To feel happy in my body is huge. I’m going to be 70 years old. I feel better than I did 20 years ago.” Shevi’s’ journey into the Gyrotonic method began after years of studying anatomy, physiology and kinesiology in Israel. She received a Bachelor’s degree in Speech Therapy and Clinical Audiology and a Master’s degree from the Program of Brain Sciences at the Bar-Ilan University. After experiencing a serious injury, Shevi started taking

Pilates classes and eventually began teaching Pilates. “I realized that by helping people with their body, I could actually help with many other problems,” Shevi explained. “Reducing or eliminating pain changes the way we approach life.” After moving to the United States, Shevi was introduced to the Gyrotonic and the Gyrokinesis® method and eventually became a master trainer in the method. The Gyrotonic method utilizes unique equipment, the Pulley Tower, for example, is made up of handles, pulleys and weights. The equipment is important because it gives you a resting place, a guidance, a support, so you can have multiple joint articulations without compression. Gyrokinesis, utilizes only a stool and a floor mat. Participants are guided through all the natural movements of the spine with corresponding breathing patterns. This approach systematically and gently works the joints and muscles through rhythmic and undulating movements similar to those done on Gyrotonic machines. Instructors at Body Rhythm are highly trained certified Gyrotonic,

Gyrokinesis instructors and rehab specialists. While they are capable to work with people suffering from varying degrees of pain, many of their clientele are athletes and active people. Gyrotonic is essentially for everyone. For all ages and all physical conditions. “Juliu, the creator of this system says that Nature gives you the potential but you have to do the work. You have to practice. - It’s the clients that do it

Fierce, determined, committed, impassioned, empowered – these are all adjectives used to describe the breast cancer community over the past two decades. But as multi-day events come and go, many alumni are left searching for a community to embrace – one that can help fuel their passion to make a difference in the lives of those affected by breast cancer. That's where Walk 3to9 can help. Established in 2018, Walk 3to9 is a 5k,10k, 15k charity walk organized by fellow alumni and walker coaches who share a common passion in the fight against breast cancer. Through the scenic trails of Kenneth Hahn State Recreational Area, walkers, survivors and volunteers from all over Southern California will came together on Sunday, September 15th to raise funding and awareness to benefit the Dr. Susan Love Research Foundation, an

organization that funds Breast Cancer research, including Metastatic. “So many emotions from today, but the main one is gratitude! Gratitude to the walkers who braved the humidity and hills to walk in the fight against breast cancer. Gratitude to the fearless crew who did anything and everything to make the day a special one. Gratitude to our fabulous sponsors who gave so much to the Walk. But mostly gratitude to all of our fabulous donors who donated so generously to the Dr. Susan Love Research Foundation! We’ve raised almost $55,000 to help end breast cancer, and we’re still going strong! Donations accepted through 12/31/19, so keep the momentum going!” Walk 3to9 said in a Facebook post. Headquartered in Los Angeles, the Dr. Susan Love Research Foundation is dedicated to achieving a future without breast cancer by engaging the public and scientific communities in innovative research on cause and prevention. The Foundation is highly-respected worldwide and receives 4/4 stars on Charity Navigator, the highest rating awarded. For more information about Walk 3to9 visit www.walk3to9.org

The Link Between Hearing Loss and Dementia Dr. Melissa Alexander helping patients minimize effects of hearing loss By Keldine Hull The ability to hear can have a significant impact on all aspects of life, from someone’s emotional and physical well-being to their professional career and activities they enjoy outside of work. Despite research proving the link between untreated hearing loss and increased risks of falls, depression, anxiety, hospitalization and dementia, millions of people let their hearing loss go untreated. According to Dr. Melissa Alexander, an audiologist based in Santa Monica, “Twenty-five years ago a case-control study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association first reported that hearing impairment in older adults was strongly and independently associated with the likelihood of having dementia- raising the intriguing hypothesis that age-related hearing impairment may contribute to dementia risk.” Alexander added that over the last four years, growing epidemiologic and clinical research studies have bolstered that theory. “Longitudinal studies of community-dwelling older adults have demonstrated that hearing impairment is independently associated with a 30-40% rate of accelerated cognitive decline,” Alexander explained. Compared to individuals with normal hearing, individuals with varying levels of hearing impairment had an increased risk of incident in dementia over 10 years of follow-up. Alexander continued, “Neuroimaging studies have also demonstrated that individuals with untreated hearing loss have reduced neuron volumes in the auditory cortex, responsible for speech processing and understanding, and accelerated rates of whole brain atrophy.” According to a study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association

(JAMA), failing to treat hearing loss can also have a financial impact. Alexander explained, “The University of California San Francisco, Johns Hopkins with AARP, and Optum Labs also ran this study. They looked at data from 77,000 to 150,000 patients over the age of 50 who had untreated hearing loss. People with normal hearing created 26 percent less health care costs compared to people who were recently diagnosed with hearing loss.” Alexander continued, “That number continues to increase over time. After a decade, healthcare expenses increase by 46 percent. Those numbers, when broken down, average $22,434 per person.” Factors associated with the increase include dementia, decline of cognitive ability, depression, lower quality of life, and falls. Alexander also added that a second companion study done by Bloomberg School suggests a link between untreated hearing loss and higher morbidity. Through the study, it was revealed that people with untreated hearing loss had 3.2 more diagnoses of dementia per 100 over the course of 10 years, 6.9 more diagnoses of depression, and 3.6 more falls. And hearing loss continues to rise. According to the National Institute of Deafness and Other Communication Disorders, hearing loss is prevalent in 55 to 64 year olds at a rate of 8.5 percent and approximately 2 percent of individuals 45 to 54 are significantly deaf. Alexander continued, “The number rises to 25 percent for individuals aged 65 to 74 and 50 percent for anybody above the age of 74. Those numbers are predicted to rise in the future. As many as 38

million people in this country could have hearing loss by the year 2060.” Even younger demographics experience hearing loss. About 15 percent of 18-year-olds have a hard time hearing and 2 to 3 out of 1,000 children have hearing loss. “I am now seeing younger and younger patients coming in for hearing testing, many reporting tinnitus. Noise exposure is a major problem and it is causing younger people to experience hearing loss in their teens and twenties,” Alexander explained. Using hearing aids can change these figures and help with some of the health issues connected with hearing loss. Alexander continued, “When I diagnose a patient with a hearing loss, I discuss with the patient how their hearing impairment affects their life. I routinely request a significant other be present to take part in the consultation, not only to obtain their feedback, but to inform them of the detrimental effects of untreated hearing loss.” Alexander continued, “Because hearing loss

is typically insidious, it isn’t always evident to the patient how much they struggle to hear. And because hearing loss is essentially an invisible disability, it’s important that I share with the patient’s loved ones how to effectively communicate, why it’s necessary to wear hearing aids consistently and what they can realistically expect the patient to hear with their hearing aids on.” It’s important that hearing tests occur as early as possible to provide a baseline of hearing. Alexander continued, “Because the ramifications of hearing loss are so detrimental, hearing testing should be taken seriously and performed on an annual basis. Hearing protection, such as custom earplugs, ear muffs or over the counter hearing protection should be a routine staple of every household. For even younger children, parents should make sure headphones have a limiter so that even if their child turns up the volume, the sound cannot cause damage to the ears.”

More Effective Treatment for HIV, Drug-Resistant TB LA BioMed’s Dr. Richard Murphy’s holistic approach By S taff W riter Dr. Richard Murphy is studying a new approach that shows promise for two deadly diseases Patients infected with both HIV and multidrug-resistant tuberculosis (MDRTB) have historically had an uphill battle with low success rates and high mortality.

Making things worse, until recently, the therapy for MDR-TB has been difficult, involving months of painful injections. But there’s a promising new oral treatment regimen for MDR-TB that could make a huge difference to patients in resource-limited settings. Dr. Richard Murphy, an investigator at the Los Angeles Biomedical Research Institute (LA BioMed), is leading a team studying this new short-course regimen to determine why some patients are achieving success –with the intent of creating more effective treatments for everyone. To accomplish that goal, Dr. Murphy and

ARE YOU SUFFERING FROM DEPRESSION? ARE YOU OVER THE AGE OF 60? The UCLA Late-Life Mood, Stress and Wellness Program in the Geriatric Psychiatry Division is conducting a 12-month research study involving 12 weekly 60-minute sessions of either a health and education wellness class or a Tai Chi class. Participants will undergo three functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) scans. A complete psychiatric evaluation will be provided. Subjects will not be charged for participation and will be compensated. You must be at least 60 years old. If you or anyone you know is interested in participating, call for an appointment to see if you qualify, or for more information at: (310)-794-9523. The study will be conducted by Helen Lavretsky, M.D.

his collaborator, South African physician Thiloshini Govender, are comparing patients co-infected with HIV and MDR-TB who have not responded to treatment with those who have responded in order to better understand what’s working. Pill burden could be an important factor, so to determine if patients are having trouble keeping up with the demands of treatment, the team is using dried blood spot to monitor drug levels and estimate adherence. Dried blood spots are minimally invasive and allow specimens to be safely stored even in tropical climates. A major advantage of this short-course program is that it requires fewer interactions with the formal health care sector for injections. Reducing visits to clinics may be a good thing both for patients with MDR-TB as well as for other immunocompromised patients at clinics who are at risk for MDR-TB exposure. “Patients suffering from HIV and MDRTB face a difficult path back to health, but this new therapy could make things much easier,” Dr. Murphy said. “It is critical to study why some patients succeed and others do not, so that we can continue to improve treatment outcomes and reduce community TB transmission.” Dr. Murphy’s cohort study is funded by a grant from the UCLA AIDS Institute and Center for AIDS Research. Earlier this summer, he and his team began the study

of MDR-TB and HIV co-infected patients in South Africa at a hospital outside of Durban, South Africa. LA BioMed has been responsible for innovations that have revolutionized health care worldwide, such as the invention of paramedic training protocols. Dr. Murphy’s work is another example of the wide reach of LA BioMed’s research. “Dr. Murphy’s research could save thousands of lives,” said David Meyer, PhD, President and CEO, LA BioMed. “We are so proud of our investigators who consistently look to help those in need.”

WHAT IS MAKING US SICK? Ananda Integrative Medicine takes a holistic approach By S taff W riter The Westside of Los Angeles is known for having residents that put health and wellbeing at the forefront of their day-today routines. Ananda Integrative Medicine, a health center located in the heart of Brentwood not only helps patients feel healthy but also allows them to get to the root cause of any ailments to answer the question: what is making us sick? “Integrative Medicine treats the root cause rather than just treating the symptoms with increasingly expensive pharmaceuticals and or surgery. This more patient-centered approach allows for greater time with patients to identify their main sources of discomfort or barriers to optimal health,” said Reshma Patel, P.A., CEO & Founder Ananda Integrative Medicine. Patel, who received her B.S degree in Biological Sciences from UC Irvine and a Masters Degree in Medical Science from St. Louis University earning Physician Assistant degree, Nutrition Genomics (understanding how the whole body responds to food), Pharmacogenomics (how genes affect a person’s response to drugs), bioidentical hormone replacement therapy (reduce side effects of hormone imbalance such as hot flashes and fatigue), Precision Medicine, Detoxification, Anti-Aging, Restorative Medicine and Nutrition. Before opening Ananda Integrative Medicine, located at 11950 San Vicente Blvd, Suite 110, Patel spent 14 years practicing family medicine, urgent care and occupational medicine in the Los Angeles area. It was her experience practicing “traditional” medicine that led Patel to get involved with Integrative Medicine and gives her a unique perspective when it comes to helping patients get to the root cause of health issues. As fall and winter illnesses begin to creep back into the reality of people throughout the Westside, Patel offers five factors that may be making us sick. Environmental Toxins “Environmental toxins are cancer-causing chemicals and endocrine disruptors, both human-made and naturally occurring,

that can harm our health by disrupting sensitive biological systems,” Patel said. Examples include BPA, Dioxin, Atrazine, Phthalates, Perchlorate, Fire Retardants, Lead, Arsenic, Mercury, Perfluorinated chemicals, organophosphates and pesticides (Monsanto's RoundUp that contains Glyphosate, for example) “All of these compounds can negatively affect human health. Many of them are known to, cause cancer (radon, formaldehyde, benzene), act as endocrine disruptors (BPA, pesticides, phthalates), cause organ failure or developmental problems (lead, mercury, cadmium), infertility (glycol ethers, pesticides),” Patel said. Unhealthy Microbiome (Gut Health) Gut Dysbiosis typically occurs when the bacteria in your gastrointestinal (GI) tract — which includes your stomach and intestines — become unbalanced. Hippocrates the ‘Father of Medicine’ famously stated over 2,000 years ago that, “All disease begins in the gut.” According to Patel, there are 19 conditions that begin in the gut: anxiety, depres-

sion, eczema, rosacea, psoriasis, dermatitis, heart disease, dementia & Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease, autoimmune diseases, migraines, allergies, asthma, cancer, chronic fatigue syndrome, obesity, type 2 diabetes, osteoarthritis and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease Lifestyle “Nutrition, sleep, exercise, stress, mind/ emotional state, community, all impact optimal health. I discuss all these areas in great detail with patients as these items are pillars to longevity!” Patel says. Hormones “Are your hormones balanced? Do you have estrogen dominance?” Patel asks. Symptoms of hormone imbalance in women include decreased sex drive, weight gain, menstrual irregularities, Uterine fibroids, fatigue, fibrocystic breasts, headaches, infertility, irritability, depression and anxiety. Symptoms in men include: sexual dysfunction, enlarged breasts and infertility According to Patel, risks associated with estrogen dominance range from: cancers, candida (yeast) overgrowth, thyroid dysfunction, auto-immune diseases. For men, too little testosterone can cause erectile dysfunction, muscle loss, weight gain, fatigue and mood-related problems Genetics According to Patel, one diet cannot suit everybody and at her practice, patients can develop a nutrition plan tailored specifically to their DNA. “Nutrition genomics is valuable to ascertain if you have genes that prevent proper

detox pathways, genes that predispose you to certain diseases, genes that favor a certain diet, genes that favor different types of exercise. Your genes are not your destiny. We can use nutrition to help turn ‘on’ or ‘off’ the expression of your genes,” Patel said. Other services offered at Ananda Integrative Medicine include infrared sauna treatments and vitamin injections, both of which provide patients a wide range of health benefits. HIVE Mentality for Seniors Living with HIV/AIDS Celebrate National HIV/AIDS and Aging Awareness Day. By Amy Patton Those in the LGBTQ+ community living in the late ‘80s to the early ‘90s did the unthinkable: they survived the AIDS Crisis. Now, they are aging and thriving. But living with HIV/ AIDS is no easy feat. September 18 is National HIV/AIDS and Aging Awareness Day—a day to call attention to the growing number of people living long and full lives with HIV and aging-related challenges of HIV prevention, testing, treatment, and care. That’s where the HIVE (HIV- Elders) program comes in. HIVE launched in 2018 and is tailored for men who have sex with men (MSM) of all ethnicities who are 50 years of age and older and living with HIV. The program is designed to improve the health and well-being of this growing population of men by addressing stigma, social isolation, social support, and empowerment. Each week HIVE orchestrates meetings and events with purpose--meaning, topics are based off of an in-house study that identified the needs assessments for this group, including housing and food insecurity, stigma, isolation, depression, comorbidities, and other issues affecting people with HIV 50 and older. Meet Frank Gulli, who currently lives in LGBT Triangle Square – the very first senior housing for LGBTQ people in the United States. It is managed

by the Los Angeles LGBT Center. Frank is longtime survivor of HIV and a member of HIVE. The Pride LA spoke with Frank about his experience. Check it out:

Can you introduce yourself? My name is Frank Gulli. I’m 68 years old and a proud gay man living with HIV who has fought for my rights for a long time. In one sentence, what is the HIVE program? The HIVE Program addresses some of the psychosocial issues that people like me, who are over 50 and living with HIV, are dealing with. Can you elaborate? HIVE offers social connection, so we don’t isolate; life skills to deal with past trauma, coping and stress; conversation so we stay current with each other, and health education dinners so we can eat and learn about managing co-morbidities. What is a HIVE exactly? HIVE is an APLA Health program that stands for HIV-Elders. It is also a group with members who share the same interests in being empowered while living with HIV over 50. What was the reason/driving factor to launch the HIVE program? Mainly that the majority of people living with HIV in the United States are now over the age of 50 and that number will continue to increase. We have different needs than someone who is 25 who was just diagnosed with HIV and can access new medications and an established continuum of care in Los Angeles. How does someone apply/get accepted to the HIVE program?

There is no screening process. You just choose to participate in one or more weekly HIVE events and treat each other with the respect that we deserve. Why is HIV/AIDS and Aging Awareness Day important to the LGBTQ+ community? It celebrates the struggles we overcame in the 80s and 90s with the AIDS crisis, the fact that we are alive when so many are not here with us, and that we are survivors, growing in numbers, here to stay. Can you talk on being a long-time survivor of HIV? What unique challenges come up? How do you overcome them? I was living in San Francisco when it became ground zero of the AIDS epidemic. By 1985, the city was full of heartbreak. I

was diagnosed with HIV that year, forever making 1985 a pivotal year. There were no medical treatments, other than some antibiotics that seemed to prolong death for many. For whatever reason, maybe by the grace of God, I never got sick from HIV and I held on to hope for a better day. In 2000, I moved to Los Angeles and was on effective medication that suppressed my virus. Life in LA was cautiously optimistic for me. I was living pretty well, despite my diagnosis, and my fear of death had gone away. Life went on like that, but then suddenly, my new gang of friends started getting older. I started to see a lot of isolation and unhappiness take over. I did what I could to stay healthy, connected and relevant. I got more educated on HIV, I socialized as much as possible and entertained. I believe that we are now in a place where HIV is no longer chaos and an uncontrolled crisis; however, the HIV/AIDS epidemics is still a topic that needs our attention and requires everyone’s attention. There are several organizations that do not have the funds for programs that benefit clients like me. For me it is essential to come together as one community and be able to show support and show that we are there for one another. Is there any new or exciting information about the program or being a HIVE? HIVE events continue to increase. There is something every week to participate in. There is a big HIVE HIV & Aging Summit for consumers, like me, on December 7 at the new LA LGBT Senior Center. There is also a fun screening of Rocketman: the Sing Along version, on the Paramount lot for HIV/AIDS & Aging Awareness Day.

Destination: Healthy Skin, The Skin Cancer Foundation’s mobile skin cancer education and screening program, has wrapped its third annual journey around the U.S. Local volunteer dermatologists conducted 1,827 free skin cancer screenings aboard the Foundation’s 38-foot Destination: Healthy Skin RV. Program participants also received The Skin Cancer Foundation’s educational materials and sun protection samples. The Destination: Healthy Skin RV traveled more than 10,000 miles between May and August, making stops for educational events in New York, Florida, Louisiana, Texas, Arizona, California, Utah, Colorado, Nebraska, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Tennessee and Connecticut. Together, 59 dermatologists teamed up to donate more than 175 hours of free, full-body skin exams at Destination: Healthy Skin events. The dermatologists identified 578 potential skin cancers and precancers, 40 of which were suspected melanomas. “Keeping this program on the road and providing this vital public health service has been one of our greatest accomplishments,” says Deborah S. Sarnoff, MD, president of The Skin Cancer Foundation. “Many people who came by the RV told us they wouldn’t have gotten a screening this year

if we weren’t in town. These and other heartfelt comments motivate us to continue our efforts to reach as many communities as possible.” Skin cancers that are found and removed early, before they’ve had a chance to spread, are easier to treat and lead to better outcomes for patients. The Skin Cancer Foundation recommends all adults see a dermatologist at least once a year for a skin exam while consistently checking their skin at home for anything new, changing or unusual. For the second year in a row, Walgreens collaborated with The Skin Cancer Foundation on the program. In each city, Walgreens representatives gave attendees the opportunity to receive a hightech facial image scan to examine sub-surface sun damage utilizing our Canfield Reveal® Imaging system. They also hosted interactive skin care experiences featuring Walgreens beauty consultants specially trained in sun care. These experts were on site to distribute sunscreen samples, educate visitors on the importance of sun protection and provide advice for staying safe in the sun. The Skin Cancer Foundation is the only global organization solely devoted to the prevention, early detection and treatment of skin cancer. The mission of the Foundation is to decrease the incidence of skin cancer through public and professional education and research. Since its inception in 1979, the Foundation has recommended following a complete sun protection regimen that includes seeking shade and covering up with clothing, including a wide-brimmed hat and UV-blocking sunglasses, in addition to daily sunscreen use. Older You Get, Harder You Fall With Barbara Bishop

I’ve always heard that as you age, “avoiding falls” becomes an important part of your life. According to the National Council for Aging Care, every 11 seconds an older adult is treated in the emergency room for a fall. Add me to the “Every 11 Seconds” list. At 60 years old, I now understand what all the fuss is about. A couple of weeks ago, I was coming out of an event, navigating the parking lot. Instead of looking two feet in front of me, I was looking 50 feet in front of me, trying to locate my car. All of a sudden, I tripped, without any warning, on a concrete block, the kind used in parking lots to organize the cars. (I hate those blocks; I have a small car that sits low, and I’ve hit those mo-fos several times, scraping the underbelly of the front end.) I flew over the blockade; I tried to break my fall by putting my right arm against a parked car next to me. Because of the force of the fall, my arm violently bent backward. I then fell on my left knee and elbow to the parking lot ground. I felt pain in my right arm that I had never experienced before. OMG! My arm is broken, I thought.

I couldn’t move. I started to cry, embarrassed, scared and in intense pain. My friend ran to get help. It was decided that I needed an ambulance to take me to the ER. 20 minutes later, they arrived. The paramedics lifted me on to a stretcher. I screamed in pain, but they remained calm and continued their protocols. I was then quickly lifted into the ambulance, and whisked off to Saint John’s. We were close to the hospital, thank god. And, on a Saturday night at 10 p.m., it wasn’t jammed. Thank god! I was put into a room almost immediately. The attending nurse was trying to find a vein in my left arm, and kept poking me in the wrong place. I had to show her where, at the same time begging her to get it done, so I could be relieved of some of the pain with an intravenous pain killer. (Later I had a massive bruise on my arm. Hopefully she’ll get better.) Once I was gently numbed, they took me for x-rays. They determined that I had a dislocated shoulder! Wow. Throughout my entire life, I’ve never had a broken bone, torn cartilage, sprained ankle, nothing. When I was younger, I was kind of jealous of the kids that got to wear casts. Not any more. The ER doc came into my room. Her plan was to put the shoulder back into place. Hopefully with me “asleep,” which she made arrangements for. I guess I fell asleep right

away, because before I knew it, she woke me up to tell me she was done. It took less than five minutes! There was no additional damage. I was lucky. And they were great caregivers. In and out within two hours. A few days later, my right arm was covered in deep, dark bruises. My elbow and my knee were a black and blue mess as

well. A week later, the bruises were 80 percent gone. I had a follow up with my orthopedic surgeon. He said that I was a “bad ass” because I was healing so well. Little did he know how much of a baby I was a week ago. Whether you’re 50-plus or not, be careful out there!

DEAR AIDAN

DEAR AIDAN: Feeling Idle in Los Angeles

Dear Aidan, I know it seems like a stupid simple problem but I just moved to Los Angeles area and I literally cannot STAND the increase of time I spend in the car! I find other drivers to be so rude and I can't help but get all tense behind the wheel. Is there a driving technique or something that I can employ to make driving easier? Or a way I could cut down the driving time?

Dear Driven to Madness! I feel you! I used to absolutely hate driving! I hated driving so much in fact that I had 8 car accidents in the first 3 years of driving! 8 CAR ACCIDENTS is a lot even for an Asian Driver (Kidding I'm a comic). For those readers out there who do not have issues with "Driving" I want you to read this article and place some other area you are discontented with your life because the advice crosses over. I think whenever we have to do something that we generally do not like to do and

we have to adjust to a new environment we all have a tendency to jump straight to the "ELIMINATION OF THE NEW FACTOR THAT'S CAUSING US STRESS".I see people do this with boyfriends all the time... My girlfriends will be hemming and hawing over the fact that they don't have a boyfriend for months at a time, then they will get one and once they do, they blame the boyfriend for her insecurities (there are issues to work through every relationship) and so they ELIMINATE that thing that they have been wanting all along. So in a scenario like the one you presented, it is good to take a look at what aspects of this is controllable and what is uncontrollable. If you live in Southern California, you are more than likely to be in your car more and that is probably uncontrollable unless you are willing to take the bus (which I would not recommend). The car IS the most effective way to get around in general so getting out of driving altogether is not the answer. In a situation in which an unpleasant option is unavoidable, the best thing that you can do is to "make the best of it". But @ROMANCEATTACKRH

I would actually recommend taking this a step further. Just in the linguistics alone, "making the best of it" implies a dreadful event that must be stomached at best. The thing to do is to try to create a TERRIFIC environment for yourself every opportunity you can get, not to merely settle for "being able to handle it" As much as I used to hate driving, I really love driving now truly! When i discovered this concept of trying to create a terrific enviroment within an unpleasant situation and not just "geting by". Of course there are practical things that you can do to feather your nest such as picking good tunes, and putting up photos of loved ones... but I also think it is important that you pick a narrative that helps you every chance that you get. Once your start directing your thoughts with purpose to a place of gratitude and appreciation such as "I know this traffic jam is awful but at least I have a car and it is air conditioned. I can just relax in the COOL AIR" before you know it all of the positive aspects that you will have been pointing out will become the truth for you!

THEATRE PREVIEW: “A Kid Like Jake”

IAMA Theatre Company opens its 2019-20 12th anniversary season with an award-winning play about a mother and father trying to do right by their son. Jennifer Chambers directs Sarah Utterback (Grey’s Anatomy), Tim Peper (Amazon’s Jean Claude Van Johnson), Sharon Lawrence (NYPD Blue, Shameless, The Ranch and much more) and Olivia Liang (One Day at a Time) in the West Coast premiere of A Kid Like Jake by Daniel Pearle. Newly revised by the playwright for this production, A Kid Like Jake opens Oct. 3 in a Pasadena Playhouse guest production at The Carrie Hamilton Theatre, where performances will continue through Nov. 3; low-priced previews begin Sept. 28. Pearle’s acclaimed play is a study of intimacy and parenthood, and the fantasies that accompany both. On the eve of the admissions cycle for New York City kindergartens,Alex and Greg have high hopes for their son Jake — a precocious fouryear-old who happens to prefer Cinderella to G.I. Joe. But as the process continues, Jake's behavior becomes erratic and perplexing, and other adults in his life start to wonder whether his fondness for dress-up might be cause for concern. The Pride LA spoke with playwright Daniel Pearle and director Jennifer Chamber about what to expect. Check it out: Daniel Pearle: In one sentence, what is this play about? The play is about two Brooklyn parents, Alex and Greg, who are trying to find right school for their four-year-old son, Jake, who happens to prefer Cinderella to G.I. Joe. Can you elaborate more? The kindergarten application process prompts

them to think about Jake and how he's seen by the outside world, something they haven't really discussed much until this point. And when Jake's behavior starts to become more troubling and erratic, other adults in his life begin to wonder whether Jake's fondness for dress-up might be more than just a phase. Alex and Greg have differing instincts about how best to parent and protect their son, and this gradually starts to cause a rift in their marriage. What was your inspiration for writing this play? I wrote the play back in 2013. At that time, I was still tutoring high school students in New York City and so I was often encountering parents at a similar precipice moment, getting ready to send their kids off to college and out into the world. I was very interested that fundamental separation anxiety, and all the ways in which it manifested. Around the same time, I was also reading articles on gender expression and gender identity as it related to younger and younger children, which brought up memories from my own child-

hood. I was struck by how much the conversation around gender identity had changed since I was Jake's age. Can you talk a bit on gender identity and children? I think what always struck me is how mysterious kids are at this age (4 and 5) when they're just starting to really differentiate themselves from their parents and conceptually organize the world around them. Gender of course is a huge piece of that. I don't pretend to be an expert by any means, but I was amazed in doing research, even back in 2013, by how rapidly the language and the conversation was changing -- which has only accelerated the past six years. I was most interested in how adults respond to a child who's maybe old enough to express themselves, but not quite old enough to define themselves. Why is this an important topic to bring to the stage? We talk a lot about tolerance and acceptance but one thing I don't think we think about enough is how difficult it can be to tolerate ambiguity and uncertainty. This is true in all aspects of our lives, but I think certainly when it comes to gender roles and gender expression it's especially fraught. I think because it's so immediate, theater is a place where you can invite an audience to sit in that uncomfortable place where there aren't easy answers. What has been your favorite part to see come alive on the stage? For me it's always the actors and what they bring, all the things that maybe you didn't even hear when you wrote a scene. I think this play is, above all, about intimacy -- so it's really all about the actors and the performances.

What do you hope the audience takes away from the play? That's always tough to say because personally I don't usually write from a place of wanting to teach or preach. That said, I think the best you can hope for with any play is that an audience comes away with greater empathy and curiosity. I hope it encourages an audience to think about sitting in uncertainty, letting go of the need to know all the time. I know for me, that's a tall order...

What was your favorite scene to direct? There is a moment when the parents really break down and have one of those honest, raw, “if we were thinking about what we are saying we would never say these things” kind of fights. It is heartbreaking and so so real. It is very exciting to direct. What was one of the more challenging scenes to direct? There is a scene inside of a restaurant where the actors never move. So I have to find ways to go deep inside the intention and conversation of the scene.Without the luxury of movement, that can be difficult. What can the audience expect? Courageous, honest performances. Feeling this story in their heart and their stomach.

ON STAGE

PREVIEW,

What interested you in directing this play? The beautiful, cut to the heart, writing. The graceful way the play unfolds. As a director, it requires both restraint and creativity to bring it to life and that is really exciting to me. What kind of themes does this play touch on? Parenting. Gender identity. Breaking through old paradigms of thinking as the whole landscape of gender identity changes. How do you do what is best for your kid? How, as a parent, you get out of the way and really listen to where you kid is at and what they need? Marriage. Why is this kind of story representation important in the Arts? It really looks at the conversation around gender identity from all sides and it does not pass judgement or hammer down a bunch of “shoulds”. Daniel has crafted the play so we never actually see Jake and that theatrical device allows us to illuminate the conversation from a different perspective. There is something incredibly powerful and informative when the title character of the play is never seen. We learn so much about the agenda and biases we bring to the table around the issue.

STAR GAZING By Samuel Prince

ARIES (March 21-April 19) Aries should not leave open a conflict with one of their relatives. You and this person will never reconcile if you delay dealing with today’s dispute. Instead of shouting loudly, accusing your opponent of all the sins of humanity, try to understand his personal position. TAURUS (April 20-May 20) Taurus on this day will be slow getting to matters related to planning their Friday’s leisure. It is likely that you need to take this question to someone close to you. If you don't, do not start grumbling if this evening disappoints you completely. GEMINI (May 21-June 21) Gemini on Friday will experience a lot of pleasant excitement. In the morning you will be invited on a date by a person you can only look at with awe. Preparation for the meeting will seem to you to be a very important matter. CANCER (June 22-July 22) Cancers will become generators of fresh ideas about their close environment. During the day, while you are at work, it is your ideas that will create enthusiasm in each of your colleagues and will form the basis of a collective project. LEO (July 23-Aug. 22) Leos today are not recommended to overload themselves with an excess of intense or exciting experiences. This will lead you to need to take a sedative. It will be much better if you give up your natural sentimentality when watching a sad film or listening to a best friend’s story. VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22) Virgos today can significantly expand their horizons, thanks to a sudden trip. This spontaneous event will be held at the request of a close family member, and at first you will react to this idea without much enthusiasm. LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 23) Libra on this day will be very pleasant and courteous companions. It is a pity only that you forget about the politeness and courtesy in communicating with your soul-mate. You will respond with an angry tirade to one of her questions. SCORPIO (Oct. 24-Nov. 21) Scorpions on this day should avoid aggressive encounters. It’s not that somebody will succeed in offending you. You will get infected by such people with a bad mood, and Friday will end for you not as you originally planned. SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21) Sagittarians on this day will take care of planning their next purchases. Do not forget to include in this list a gift for the elder members of your family, a pair of whom are coming up on an important date. CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19) Capricorns will enjoy today in a beautiful mood. At work, without hassle, you finish a very complex project, over which you and your partner fought for several months. Having decided to celebrate this event, you and your colleague will go to the bar, where you will spend this Friday night. AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18) Aquarians today can safely spend a little more than their budget allows. You will receive a major award (not now, but at the beginning of the coming week). However, you should take care that money is not wasted. PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20) Pisces today cannot refrain from judgment toward their new colleagues. You will find these people to be nearly simpletons, who quite by chance turn out to be part of your work team. This you make clear to them with just a short communication.
