Newsy Neighbour fans, supporters and advertisers!! The Newsy Neighbour Team has been working on this magazine for over 11 years now.

We’ve gone through quite a few changes over the last 11 years, including staff members coming and going, creating our own Delivery Team, upgrading the magazine from news print to full-gloss, creating a digital magazine, events, galas, festivals, marriages, divorces, children, and more. We have worked tirelessly over the past 11 years and are extremely proud of what we’ve created for the towns and cities east of Calgary. There has been incredible ups and downs and changes on this adventure. We have tried to be involved in every event, gathering, fundraiser, new business opening, anything and everything in Chestermere, Langdon and Strathmore. We have always wanted show our support and make The Newsy Neighbour a household name. For example, In 2015 we saw a void in downtown Strathmore, so we created the Get to Know Your Neighbour Festival – a huge festival in downtown Strathmore created SOLELY for the purpose of bringing people downtown to see what businesses were down there. We created the festival, not with the desire to just promote the magazine, but to help the businesses who had told us they were hurting from lack of traffic. We made this a non-profit event and donated the money from the festival back into the community. In 2015 we also saw a need to showcase local businesses with an award commemorating all the hard work they’ve done to make a name for themselves, so we created the Readers’ Choice Best in Business Awards. Again, the Newsy Neighbour doesn’t make any monetary gain with the Awards, but we appreciate our place in these communities and all the support we have received from local businesses and want to do our very best to give back the value that is given to us. We have always tried hard to fill a void or need the Towns have because we have the energy and means to organize things, we need businesses to succeed so they choose us to advertise with, and because we enjoy it! Three years ago, in 2016, our personal lives individually took a drastic turn. In August 2016, Newsy’s Denise lost her brother in a tragic car accident that rocked her life and changed her family forever. Two short months later, Newsy’s Aleesha and her husband split up.

The Newsy girls broke. Prior to these two events, the Newsy girls were doing everything they could to get the Newsy name to be the #1 go-to print media for all local businesses. Any time there were complaints or difficult people to deal with, the girls worked together to appease the situation. After the exhaustion that 2016 put on the Newsy girls, complaints of any kind tore them down even more. There were complaints about the Festival, including downtown businesses creating a petition to keep 2nd Ave from shutting down for the festival and some businesses on 3rd Ave complaining to the Town and other media about the Festival. There were complaints about the Awards, calling it a “popularity contest” and that “no small business has a chance to win against the larger businesses.” 3 years ago, we would have taken these complaints and responded with a very positive, energetic response. Unfortunately, after 2016, complaints of any kind were like a sucker punch in the stomach and knocked them down even more. It has taken 3 years for us to write this letter to our readers and explain to them why we went from “being everywhere” to “being nowhere.” Denise being in public meant people asking how she’s doing, how her family is doing, and bringing her brother into the conversation – not to mention, noticing her “new look” as she lost all of her hair due to the stress (literally!). Aleesha being in public meant hearing rumours, judging eyes, and complete disregard for human decency. We lost our drive, we lost our fight to be “the best”, version that we were before all this. Last year, Aleesha opened a restaurant/bar in Langdon – the Langdon Firehouse Bar + Grill, in order to continue her passion and drive for owning and running a small business and serving and helping people in these communities!. Currently, Denise is opening a store in Strathmore, Lil Hoots Consignment Boutique – again, because of the drive, dedication and passion she has for growing and running a small business in these amazing communities we live in. We are writing this message to our devoted readers to tell you one thing: WE’RE BACK! We have taken the last 3 years to feel sorry for ourselves, crawl out of the hole’s we fell into, grow stronger and more passionate then ever before, and come back with a force to be reckoned with! We have changed a lot in the past 3 years. We have literally met face to face our limits the past 3 years, but instead of it turning us into angry, resentful people, we have been able to create something beautiful: a friendship that allows us to have the strength and desire to go out into the world with our heads held high and smiles on our faces. If I’m having a horrible day, she’s the person who makes me feel better. If she’s having a horrible day, I’m the person who jokes about running away to Mexico. We are bringing the drive and amazingness of The Newsy Neighbour Magazine back. We will be at events, we will work hard to remind you that print and digital advertising is integral to the success of any business – and why you should choose us over the very many alternatives. The Newsy Neighbour Magazine isn’t going anywhere, and we will always work hard to make sure we bring you the very best magazine every single month.

“Carrying the Delicate Flower of Morale”: The Complicated Relationship Between the Patriarchy and American Women’s Homefront Efforts During WWII

The debate on marriage, especially those initiated in wartime, was deeply divided. With the imminence of death looming in the lives of young men and young women, wartime marriages and courtships, though prevalent, were widely discouraged. In spite of the probability of losing a romantic partner, the desire for companionship pervaded the consciousness of the young generation at war, serving as a form of emotional salvation in a period fraught by uncertainty and fear. Unsurprisingly, war marriages nonetheless occurred and the rate of such instances healthily increased, with the year 1940 charting more marriages in America than any year previous to it. Gladys Gaylord, a marriage counsellor during the Second World War, suggested wartime makes people “appreciate the deep values of home life” (‘home’ constituting a dwelling and a family) and thus, when death seems imminent, marriage is a means of envisioning and securing a future. This, to many, was a difficult task, suggesting those in the ‘anti-war marriage’ camp were merely disgruntled and confused by the alteration of normal social life. The normalcy of romance and family life had been ostensibly paused due to the war making the concept of waiting for marriage until war’s end a justifiably sound one; however, rationale for marrying in spite of this reality was equally prominent. Those in favour of war marriages often argued more from a morale point of view than necessarily a practical standpoint. This led to marriages formed to proactively prevent spinsterhood and its future social consequences, to fabricate a homefront family, and to express love in the face of death. In the vein of socially constructed femininity, marriage remained a critical part of an American woman’s life, even amidst the Second World War. In the face of a gravely depleting male population and the strong correlation between age and marital eligibility in the early twentieth century, many young women hastened matrimony to servicemen. During World War II, there existed a host of women who were of ripe age to marry; however, with the prolonged absence of men as well as their future worth and stability in question, women feared marital ineligibility in the postwar era, and undoubtedly, the prospect of spinsterhood. This socially accepted notion that women could not permit the war’s endurance to inhibit the standardized path into adulthood was, indeed, one of the leading factors in women’s desire to marry deployed servicemen. Despite the economic self-sufficiency required of wives on the Homefront, the immense emotional cost of losing a partner, and the social stigma of war widows and orphaned children, couples continued to choose marriage and the pursuit of virtual normalcy. For servicemen with complicated or dysfunctional home lives, marriage seemed to be a man’s sole opportunity to have a family and ‘secure’ someone meaningful at home. Thus, prior to leaving for a largely woman-less war front, many men propositioned young women to marry them as little as a few hours after they had met. It is important to note that this was not seen as a desperate plea for sexual intercourse, but a way of fabricating a family on the Homefront in spite of the probability that a man may never actually live to interact with it. In examining this pattern of desperate behaviour exhibited by some servicemen and some women’s decision to oblige, it becomes clear that outwardly cursory war marriages were both a means to carry a serviceman through the emotional turbulence of the war and satisfy him with the comfort that “someone of his own (had been left) behind.” Similarly, some men hurried to the altar not solely to attain a wife, but to guarantee descendants. Many women indeed obliged, as statistics would prove, and wartime American saw a 20 percent increase in the US birth rate from 1939-1943. Hereditary reasons aside, children were universally revered during war time as the Americans feared their nation’s future rested in the hands of the surviving population; therefore, continuing to bear children during war aided in the perpetuation of a strong, stable population.

lovers.” Though interactions with servicemen were brief and ostensibly frivolous, hostesses sent away “[smiling] and [hopeful]” servicemen to the warfront who had arrived at USO events “[depressed] and [downhearted].” In several cases, said interactions between servicemen and women were so successful, enchanted and love-stricken men eventually returned to marry the hostesses they had become acquainted with. In addition, men with girlfriends or wives who had been separated by the war were thought to be passionately convicted to a decisive American victory. Women were traditionally viewed as feeble and defenseless, and thus, having a sweetheart on the Homefront provided servicemen with a newfound vigour to serve fearlessly in order to protect her. Two usually gender segregated camps arose in the war marriage debate: hesitant servicemen and eager young women. Indeed, the mortality rate of servicemen was high, thus provoking anxiety about leaving war brides at home. Nevertheless, young women on the Homefront were eager to tie the knot and “be the part that goes with [them] on the battlefield,” an extension of the argument about the effects of a ‘USO sweetheart’ on a serviceman’s conscience. This would contrast war marriage contrarians’ view that married men would be hesitant to give themselves entirely to the war effort so to not leave wives as widows or children without fathers. Regardless, the holistic impact wives and girlfriends, or even USO sweethearts, had on servicemen would not only be a reminder of tenderness; it would ultimately serve as the microcosm to “Americans’ endurance in the face of a lengthy war.” Movies to Complement this Section: - This is the Army (1943) - Anchors Aweigh (1945) -State Fair (1945)

Particularly in war-stricken America, the themes of love and romance were propagated in popular culture as a coping mechanism and a means of weathering the sizeable emotional, social, and economic strains of war marriages. Indeed, attraction had not paused in war times and, thus, it seemed inane to expect a halt of romantic relationship formation. The role of romance, or otherwise affection from the opposite sex, was widely acknowledged as a morale booster for servicemen. By examining American popular culture and USO hostesses, it becomes evident that the American population fetishized romance and courtships, however brief. Servicemen and young women often maintained letter correspondences in periods of separation, and popular culture played a pivotal role in the success and continuation of these mail relationships. While warfront experience was difficult to fathom for women on the Homefront and vice versa, film, radio, and music served as the antidote to separation between parties. By providing plotlines, characters, news, songs, and other forms of universalized culture, servicemen and Homefront women could conduct and easily maintain enjoyable conversations with one another. While the probability of losing one’s lover or companion was likely and equally feared during the Second World War, many romantic companionship and war marriages were justified with “sympathy … (for) young facebook.com/TheNewsyNeighbour

This is a great mental stimulation activity for pups and keeps their mind and palate active!

Bee Problems Now, this is a little story all about how my life got flippedturned upside down and I’d like to take a minute so just sit right there, I’ll tell you how I got stung by a bee. A couple of weeks ago, we went for a walk. I did my normal routine – smell everything, pee on everything, and rub my bum on the bushes. You know, normal stuff. Then I yelped. And wouldn’t walk. Mom rushed over to me and apparently there was a little bee stuck to my paw. She caaarrreeeffuuulllyyy removed the bee, while I screamed in pain. You see, it’s important to scream as much as possible because it REALLY turns on the love. Like, you can’t get enough pets after you really exaggerate how in pain you are. Mom then CARRIED me (see? So.Much.Love) home. I am NOT light, people. I got a little husky (pun intended) over the years and I am very grumpy when people carry me. But I let her. I mean, I REALLY milked it. They were feeding me from their hands while I laid on the couch, whimpering in fake pain. I limped everywhere in the house. I even made them CARRY me outside to go pee. Then… I did something really stupid. I FORGOT about the sting and started jumping around for a treat. Their faces… I knew instantly what I had done. I forgot to make them think I was in pain. SHOOT!! The game was over. No more love, no more empathy. They took me for a walk and wouldn’t carry me anymore. I’m not impressed.

How Alcohol Affects Your Body I love having a glass of red wine with my dinner every night and a second glass of wine after dinner as I relax and watch some television. But I wonder, even though they say red wine is good for you, is it also bad for you? They say something in red wine called resveratrol might be heart healthy and, in moderation, it has long been thought of as heart healthy and the antioxidants may help prevent coronary artery disease. I think the key here is “in moderation”. I choose to drink Pinot noir, which has the highest concentration of the antioxidant resveratrol. The American Heart Association recommends one glass a day for women and two glasses for men. So, I am one glass over apparenty! And my research has told me that wine doesn't make you fat, but eating pizza with your wine does. Drinking dry wine actually causes your blood sugar to drop. This is because your body focuses on metabolizing the alcohol calories first before food calories. This information got me thinking, what about drinking other alcoholic beverages? What does alcohol actually do to your health? This is what I found and it truly is very interesting. Thirty seconds after your first sip, alcohol races into your brain. It slows down the chemicals and pathways that your brain cells use to send messages. That alters your mood, slows your reflexes,

Your brain gives off a hormone that keeps your kidneys from making too much urine. But when alcohol swings into action, it tells your brain to hold off. That means you have to go more often, which can leave you dehydrated. When you drink heavily for years, that extra workload and the toxic effects of alcohol can wear your kidneys down. Your liver breaks down almost all the alcohol you drink. In the process, it handles a lot of toxins. Over time, heavy drinking makes the organ fatty and lets thicker, fibrous tissue build up. That limits blood flow, so liver cells don’t get what they need to survive. As they die off, the liver gets scars and stops working as well, a disease called cirrhosis. Normally, this organ makes insulin and other chemicals that help your intestines break down food. But alcohol jams that process up. The chemicals stay inside the pancreas. Along with toxins from alcohol, they cause inflammation in the organ, which can lead to serious damage. After years, that means you won’t be able to make the insulin you need, which can lead to diabetes. It also makes you more likely to get pancreatic cancer. Alcohol makes you dehydrated and makes blood vessels in your body and brain expand. That gives you your headache. Your stomach wants to get rid of the toxins and acid that booze churns up, which gives you nausea and vomiting. And because your liver was so busy processing alcohol, it didn’t release enough sugar into your blood, bringing on weakness and the shakes. One night of binge drinking can jumble the electrical signals that keep your heart’s rhythm steady. If you do it for years, you can make those changes permanent. And, alcohol can literally wear your heart out. Over time, it causes heart muscles to droop and stretch, like an old rubber band. It can’t pump blood as well, and that impacts every part of your body. Alcohol widens your blood vessels, making more blood flow to your skin. That makes you blush and feel warm and toasty. But not for long. The heat from that extra blood passes right out of your body, causing your temperature to drop. On the other hand, longterm, heavy drinking boosts your blood pressure. It makes your body release stress hormones that narrow blood vessels, so your heart has to pump harder to push blood through. Alcohol puts the brakes on your immune system. Well it seems if you're looking to be healthier while drinking alcohol occasionally, these are the healthiest alcohols you can choose from. Tequila is number one on the list (YAY! I love tequila!) and it is lower in calories than vodka. Red wine is number two and I have already told you why. Rum and Whiskey come next, which surprises me, but as it turns out, rum is a blood thinner and can prevent peripheral artery diseases. Rum can increase good cholesterol, also known as HDL cholesterol, and combat artery blockages, helping to prevent heart attacks and heart disease. The antioxidant boost from whiskey aids in coronary heart disease prevention. The phe-

Hello All. Larry here! Well, Happy September, everyone! It is one of our favourite times of the year… Kids are back

in school, fall sports are ramping up, nights are getting cool, leaves are turning colours, gardens are being put to rest for the winter, canning and preserving and pickling have been kicked into high gear, attention starts to gravitate from summertime activities to fall and winter activities, and Roger continues to spend his allotted daily reading time looking for new thoughts and ideas and guidance to live amazing lives as good diabetics. As some of you know, Roger and I have been bringing monthly thoughts to you for almost three years now. Back in December 2016, we recognized a need for easily accessible and understandable information that would make daily diabetic living easy to understand. According to the most recent data, about 3.0 million Canadians (8.1%) were living with diagnosed diabetes in 2013–2014, representing 1 in 300 children and youth (1–19 years), and 1 in 10 adults (20 years and older). The prevalence of diagnosed diabetes generally increases with age and is higher among males (8.7%) than among females (7.6%), both overall and in most age groups. – adapted from the Government of Canada Website This data is quite dated, but it is the best that Roger could come up with in his travels through the internet, from Canada Statistics. Why Am I Tired

All The Time? Lately, I have been tired all the time even when I get a good night’s sleep; what is wrong with me? Well, it seems it could be a number of different issues. Apparently, being dehydrated can do more than just make you feel light-headed and dizzy — it can also make you feel really, really tired. Being dehydrated messes with your blood volume, which can make your heart less efficient, leading to exhaustion. I have always tried to drink water throughout the day, but it is hard! Just this past week, as soon as I woke up in the morning, I had a glass of water. Then I told myself to try and drink a glass just before lunch and again just before dinner and then another one just before I went to bed. But what I say and what I do seem to be two different things. So, then I decided I would always have a glass of water sitting on the counter or beside my desk during the day so I would be prompted to look at it and have a sip every now and then; but because I still feel tired all the time, I get the feeling I am still not up to my quota. I need a better plan! Maybe it’s not a lack of water causing this problem. There are a lot of different things that can make you feel tired all the time. One of the most common symptoms of depression is exhaustion. This mental disorder can leave you feeling tired all the time, no matter how much sleep you get — people often don't realize they're depressed until they realize how sleepy they are. Healthline says, "People with depression often feel very tired and aren’t interested in doing any activity, regardless of the task or the required amount of effort.” Pay attention to how you're feeling, and if you think depression could be the reason, consider seeing a doctor. Maybe I do not get enough physical activity and this could also be part of the problem. In fact, not incorporating any physical activity in your day will make you even more tired. According to Science Alert, "doing light exercise just a few times a week can leave you more energized." Regular movement helps your body work better overall, and over time, it will help you feel more awake. I know this is not my problem but it could be yours—stay off your phone before bed! In fact, stay away from all electronics, including your television. Blue screens, like the ones on smart phones, can trigger a "wake-up" hormone even when you're about to sleep for the night. Again, you might not realize it's messing with your rest, but it could be keeping you from getting a deep enough sleep and leave you tired the next day. We have all been told this over and over again—breakfast is the most important meal of the day! According to Health.com, "The food you eat fuels your body, and when you sleep, your body continues using what you consumed at dinner the night before to keep your blood pumping and oxygen flowing.” So, when you wake up in the morning, you need to refuel with breakfast. I have considered taking a multi-vitamin for quite a while now and perhaps I might have to take this seriously because maybe my body is low in something. I don’t eat a lot of red meat and an iron deficiency can make you feel tired and weak all the time. It also could be I need more B vitamins as it is the B vitamins that

In the meantime, while we are trying to figure this all out, here are a few things you can do to increase your energy level. • Get as much sleep as you can, even take an afternoon nap • Try to reduce the stress in your life • Remember to get exercise every day, even go for a quick walk • Don’t smoke • Don’t drink a lot of alcohol • Eat healthy nutritious food – no junk food – they have no nutritional value • Don’t eat sugar – sugar is not your friend • Drink as much water as you can even if you start small – just drink water • Check out energy supplements – I plan to take a serious look at these Since we are on the topic of energy supplements, I thought I might let you know what I found out about all this. About 6 good-sized beets About 3 large carrots ½ large cabbage 1 package of stewing beef 1 large onion 1 Cup sour kraut 3 cloves garlic fresh dill salt and pepper to taste ½ Cup red wine vinegar

In a very large pot, brown the beef and onion about 10 minutes. Take the beef from the pot and cut up into small, bit-sized pieces and throw back into pot. Peel and cut the beets into small cubes. Peel and grate the garlic. Peel and slice the carrots. Chop the cabbage – not too small. Add everything to the pot and cover with water. Add salt and pepper to taste and fresh dill. You can be as generous with the dill as you like. Bring to a boil – reduce heat and cook, covered, until the carrots and beets are tender – the key is the longer you simmer the soup, the more intense the flavor becomes. Add the red wine vinegar and sour kraut about half way through. Be sure to taste the soup – you will know if you need a little tang or not and can add the desired amount, a little at a time until you get your desired flavour. This is one of those soups you can experiment with – use your imagination. You can add beef or vegetable stock instead of water. Add cream at the end for a creamier texture, and a spoonful of sour cream in the bowl when it is served. Borscht freezes well – so you can save some for a cold, rainy day.

RASPBERRY VINEGAR BEETS 1 ½ lbs. medium beets 1 Tbsp (15mL) brown sugar 1 Tbsp (15mL) butter 1/3 Cup (80mL) raspberry vinegar

In large saucepan, cover beets with water, bring to boil, then reduce heat and simmer covered until tender, approximately 35 – 40 minutes. Drain and cool slightly. Slip skins off and cut into slices. In same saucepan, combine butter, sugar, and vinegar. Stir until butter is melted. Add beets to sauce and simmer until heated through – stir to coat beets with butter.

1lb beet greens 1 strip of bacon ¼ Cup (60mL) chopped onion 1 garlic clove, minced ¾ Cup (185mL) of water 1 Tbsp (15mL) brown sugar 1/6 cup (30mL) of red wine vinegar ¼ tsp (1mL) crushed red pepper flakes (optional) Wash and prepare tops and cut into bite-sized pieces. Cook diced bacon slightly in large pan and add onions – cook until onions are softened and brown. Add garlic, water, sugar and red pepper flakes, then bring to a boil. Add beet tops and toss until well coated – reduce to low heat, cover and cook for approximately 5 minutes. Stir in the vinegar. Have a taste and decide if you would like to add salt and pepper – otherwise you are done and can enjoy the tangy, delicious flavor of this most healthy dish.

the weeks fly by and before you know it the geese and seagulls are congregating, the leaves are changing into their autumn wardrobes and yes, we are just a blink away from the pumpkin-spice plethora that assaults our taste buds this time of year.

Of all the bodily functions that could be contagious, thank goodness it’s the yawn. Dog food could say it’s any flavour it wants; you’re not going to test it. You mostly use your driver’s license to buy stuff that impairs your ability to drive.

I profoundly believe that when I leave this mortal shell behind and end up before St. Peter and the Pearly Gates (although some may believe I am more likely to end up before Charon and his ferry) I will not wish that I had spent more of my time on earth dusting and vacuuming. I may have once bought into the theory that cleanliness is next to Godliness, but I no longer do, and while I have maybe – possibly-most likely- muttered the Lord’s name while trying to fold fitted sheets, I have not once felt the presence of God while vacuuming. However, one day as I wrestled with a queen set – deep pockets, I had a wee epiphany of sorts, a moment if you will, that might have been divine inspiration. I discovered that by putting a fitted sheet and a flat sheet into the matching pillowcase it takes a tenth of the time and frustration of trying to fold a perfect square – and it makes it easier for the kids to find sheets to make their beds. (ha-ha, that’s a joke – teenage boys making their beds.) This is what I have now come to know to be true: my family will not perish from sleeping in wrinkled sheets. The boys will not look back on their childhood and bemoan the fact that on occasion they went to school in unmatched socks. I will not enter September thinking, drat I should have spent more time washing walls instead of driving my kid to camp. “Oh! Woah is me! I spent too long roasting marshmallows in the backyard and not enough time scrubbing floors.” Really, what keeps me up at night now is not piles of laundry that need folding, but the worry that I didn’t spend enough time with each of my boys (husband included) that day. Listen, if the boys' mix-matched socks were sticking to the floors, then that would be a different story, but I refuse to sacrifice family time so that people that visit my home as guests won’t run the risk of getting a bit of dog fur on them. Don’t like it – don’t visit. This mindset has not come easily, in fact, my twenty-year-old-self would have freaked at the state my house currently is in. In no uncertain terms, the college version of me would go absolutely “ape sh!t” over the collection of dust bunnies behind the tv. (They like it there, it’s nice and warm and no one disturbs them and occasionally a piece of popcorn rolls under the stand to sustain them). She would have had a daily task schedule and the kids socks would not only The Newsy Neighbour Magazine

be matched, folded, and put away they would have been ironed too. (Sadly, I kid you not.) In university, my type A personality drove my roommates insane. My textbooks were alphabetized, my laundry freshly folded and always put away and if so much as a speck of dust appeared, war declared with no prisoners taken. The only pledge taken in my dorm came from a can and smelled lemony fresh. I vacuumed every-single-day. I dusted every-single-day. And that was okay because back in my good old college days, my list of responsibilities included passing my classes and not passing out in classes. (Who decided 8am political science classes were a good idea?) I had a 300 square foot door room and the only living thing that depended on me was a dieffenbachia I bought from Zellers (that may or may not have died and been reincarnated with another $2.99 blue light special approximately twice a semester.) Life has gotten so much bigger and better and busier since college and I wouldn’t give up a single fleeting second of it, but in order to remain Zen and not zany, some things had to change. No, not somethings – me. I needed to change. I needed to let the dust bunnies win a battle or two because the war is lifelong and right now, while raising my kids I need to admit that I’m no superwoman, or if I am my cape is wrinkled, there’s a hole in my tights and I’ve left my whip in the car, alongside my reusable grocery bags. So, I will sacrifice folded fitted sheets for family time and I’m okay with my houseplants looking like they are in palliative care, one missed watering away from the compost bin. Because right now my mission is to get the lads to the stage of life where they can go off to college and be successful in keeping their own dorm rooms from being condemned, their grades high enough to pass, and perhaps keep a dieffenbachia from dying of dehydration. Once they're gone, I’ll get around to matching all the socks and evicting the dust bunnies – but nope, not tonight. Tonight, I shall roast marshmallows in the back yard with my family, because childhood – like summer - is too short and I refuse to regret a moment spent with my family once I’m gone - and if in the end dusting matters, I’m willing to take Pledge to the Pearly Gates.

Tribbles

“Rosa Parks inspired me to find a way to get in the way, to get in trouble… good trouble, necessary trouble.” ― John Lewis For those of you unfamiliar with ‘tribbles’, they are cute, purring balls of fluff introduced in an episode of the original Star Trek series that first aired in 1967 called The Trouble with Tribbles. They were in instant hit with viewers and sparked the creation of Tribble merchandise, fan clubs, songs and the Times newspaper listed this episode as the eighth best cult moment of all time (in 1998). The premise of the episode is that a single adorable Tribble is given to a member of the crew as a gift and once onboard the Enterprise, it quickly begins to reproduce (they are born pregnant). Seen as a gentle, cooing creature, other members of the crew accept one of the growing number of Tribbles. Soon the Tribbles are everywhere, including the air vents and food storage bays. They are eating up all the food and continuing to multiply in huge numbers. What began as an accepted addition to the starship’s community has quickly become a huge problem, and yet as the plot proceeds, they also protect the good guys. You see, they are ‘wired’ to react violently to the presence of a Klingon (the bad guys) and are able to detect an undercover Klingon on the Enterprise who is up to no good. The Tribbles started out as cooing balls of cuteness, became a

threatening menace and ending up being the surprise weapon that saved the day. So what does this have to do with you… or with anything, for that matter? As it turns out, it is a great analogy for something we all experience to varying degrees at times in our life: negative thoughts. Imagine for a moment that you experience something that at first, seems harmless (a Tribble). Then, as that experience continues, it begins to cause negative thoughts (the Klingon) and those thoughts start to multiply… and multiply until there are so many, that how we show up in our lives is affected. In our distress, we look for ways to rid ourselves of this situation and discover that a wonderful surprise is found. For example, a business owner may get a perfect new client who soon becomes very demanding. Afraid of losing this well-paying client, the owner gives more and more time to meet their extreme needs. This causes the owner to develop negative feelings, which effect how they do business. They look for ways to be rid of the client and in the process, they discover new, improved ways of doing business that would have been otherwise missed. Business profits rise. Turns out that the difficult client was a blessing in disguise. On the personal side, imagine you meet the ‘perfect’ person and you enjoy every minute you spend with them. Soon you are spending most waking moments together and doing everything you can to make them happy, including taking responsibility for the troubles in your relationship. This leads to feeling poorly about yourself and those thoughts quickly lead to more disempowering thoughts. You finally find the courage to say, ‘enough’, and start a self-discovery journey that leaves you feeling more empowered and confident than you have ever been. Each month at Women Talk in Strathmore, women tell their real-life stories in which their used their experiences to learn, grow and expand themselves and their lives. Some are traumatic, some are sad and some are introspective while others are simply so humourous that the audience is crying with laughter. One thing they have in common, is that they are all inspiring and encourage everyone to, as a TALKer at the last event said, “put your toe into a new world’. We can do this by “not letting life squeeze us out, by claiming space in our life”, as shared by WomenTalk Founder, Brigitte Deyell-Lessard. Cell Phones And Children

It amazes me at the number of children that own a cell phone these days. I am talking about small children 10 years of age or younger. I get that parents want to stay in touch with them and to know where they are and what they are doing, but there are dangers in those cell phones that parents should be aware of, like predators looking for ways to lure your unsuspecting children into possible dangerous situations. I was reading an article the other day on this subject and I really want to share this information with parents whose children own a cell phone. Before kids go back to school, police around the country are reminding parents about these potentially dangerous apps. The scary part in this article was that they listed 15 apps as ones that parents need to know about. (Six of them were used by suspected predators who were recently arrested.) • The first is 'MeetMe,' an app where teens can easily be in contact with users much older than them, with an emphasis on dating. • 'WhatsApp' and 'SnapChat' are for messaging, but what you should know is teens can send unlimited messages, have video

chats and even share their live location with other users, people they may not even know. • 'Skout' is a flirting app that's used to meet and chat with new people. Teens and adults are in different groups, but ages aren’t verified. • 'TikTok' is used for sharing user created videos that can contain bad words, even adult content. • 'Badoo' and 'Bumble' are dating apps for adults, but teens can still find ways to join. • 'Grindr' is geared towards the LGBTQ community. It allows users to share photos and meet up based on phone’s GPS location. • 'Kik' is specifically for kids, but anyone can join and anyone can contact or direct message your child. • 'LiveMe' is a live streaming app, but you don’t know who’s watching and your child’s location is revealed. • 'Holla' is all about connecting strangers around the world through video chat. Enough said. • 'Whisper' is a social confessional where kids can remain anonymous, but still share their feelings. And it can reveal your child’s location for a meet up. • 'ASKfm' encourages people to allow anonymous users to ask them questions, which opens the door for online bullying. • 'Hot or Not' rates users on attractiveness. There’s no age verification and users can send each other messages. • And lastly, 'Calculator%' apps are several secret apps that allows kids to hide their photos, videos, even browser history. The good news is that there are also Apps that can help parents manage their child’s cell phone. One great one I found is “Google Family Link”. It is a free app that parents can download on their iPhone or Android phone to manage their child’s Android phone. Parents can limit how much time their child spends on the phone, schedule the phone to be inaccessible at bedtime, and block their child’s access to the phone with one tap. Google Family Link, however, is usable only for children under the age of 13. Once kids reach this age, they can sign up for a Google account on their own and opt out of monitoring. Though parents can completely block the use of individual apps, Google Family Link does not allow them to set time limits for individual apps. An annual subscription to “Qustodio” is the best way for families with kids aged 13 and up with an Android phone to track and manage usage. As with Google Family Link, parents can use Qustodio’s app to set a daily overall screen time limit for their child, and block access to the phone with a single tap. If your child owns an Apple cell phone, the Apple’s “Screen Time” is a free set of parental controls built into iOS 12, the iPhone’s latest operating system. It allows parents to manage their child’s iPhone or iPad remotely; set a daily limit on the time they spend on specific apps, on categories of apps, or generally on the phone; and automatically limit access to the phone at bedtime. Setup can be confusing, but no other software gives you as much insight into and control over the use of an iPhone or iPad, in part because Apple has such tight control over its software and hardware. Just like anything, there is always good and bad. Not wanting to give you only the bad news, here is some good! There is a ton of FUN apps for your children for their cell phone and there are a lot of them out there. Learn about music, exercise their brains with puzzles and even learn other languages.

A handful of popular children’s songs recorded especially for the app are featured, including Mary Had a Little Lamb, Pop Goes the Weasel, and Skip to My Lou. Kids will also hear instrumental versions of Twinkle Twinkle Little Star, Wheels on the Bus, Old MacDonald, and more. Trust me I could list FUN apps all day long. Educational, Science, Language, Games, Art, Music and they can even learn about programming and coding – crazy. So just a word of caution if your child has a cell phone: be aware of what they are using it for so they do not get themselves into trouble. I found a wonderful site called “Common Sense Media”. It is a good website to keep handy. It gives parents a break down on what they should know about each and every app out there. And it provides advice on monitoring your children’s apps. Technology has truly changed all our lives and cell phones have also enabled families to keep in closer touch with each other and helped to make our lives more convenient. Shapes Toddler Preschool (free) This app gets kids ready for preschool with puzzles and games involving shapes, colours, numbers, and letters. The app is laid out so that a young child can click around without getting out of the game or ending up at a menu, and the controls are easy enough for anyone to use. There are four ways to play but all of them are educational and should help with development. This game is perfect for parents looking to teach their child more than one language, as the Rosetta Stone app reinforces English reading skills while simultaneously introducing Spanish. The app casts the child as a saviour for trapped toys. Kids have to speak Spanish to control the actions of different characters on screen, matching the correct starting

Emotionally Surviving a Motor Vehicle Collision By: Tiffany Mitchell, Provisional Psychologist

Here is Jane’s story. I was recently in a car accident, I walked away with only mild injuries, but I just can not seem to relax. My physiotherapist keeps telling me that I should be healed and back to my regular activities, but I am still in so much pain. When I am in the vehicle, I am tense and constantly checking my rear-view mirror, worried I am going to get hit from behind again. My shoulders are constantly tight, and I am avoiding driving whenever I can. When I must drive, I feel my focus is always on my mirrors and other drivers, I am so scared of what could happen. At home, I am irritated and grumpy with my loved ones, I struggle sleeping constantly tossing and turning and my mind is spinning. Does this story sound familiar? It is an often experienced but not talked about occurrence after being in a motor vehicle collision. Research has demonstrated that up to 67% of people in a motor vehicle collision with resulting physical injuries, such as whiplash, concussion, or resulting chronic pain, suffer some variance of adverse mental health. As well, 20% of people in a motor vehicle collision without physical injuries have been surveyed and found to display post traumatic stress, depression, anxiety, or emotional dysregulation. A collision is a form of trauma, and like any trauma, everyone will respond in different ways. When having experienced trauma, we do not always bounce back in ways we expect or desire. Understanding and accepting that there is a change can be hard but knowing how to cope with the after-effects can be even harder. People often want professional help to learn how to deal with the trauma, but a barrier is often cost. One thing that many do not know is that majority of vehicle insurances cover different services to varying amounts. Some of the more common services covered are; Psychology, Chiropractic, Physiotherapy, Acupuncture, Massage, Dental,

Occupational therapy. These coverages are often more extensive when compared to general extended health care benefits. For example, with psychology the amount of sessions approved is often based on the Psychologists recommendation rather than a blanket amount set by the insurance company. There are no guarantees or specific predictors to suggest who will be more adversely affected by a motor vehicle collision compared to others. Some examples of possible predictors are; manner of the accident, past stress or childhood trauma, and severity of the accident – including damage to the vehicle. How an individual perceives the accident, or how others describe it can have more of a detrimental impact than the accident itself. For example, an emergency response provider comments how lucky you are to be alive. Or yourself looking at the events of the accident and thinking “wow it could have been so much worse if I did ‘y’ instead of ‘x’.” In understanding why there is an adverse effect to a motor vehicle collision, it is important to not just consider the physical impact but also the perception of the accident. Both provide pieces to the puzzle and influence trauma and coping strategies. Motor vehicle collisions can be very traumatic and impactful on an individual’s mental health, which in turn can have a major impact on one’s ability to physically heal and function in daily living. Speaking with a professional can be very helpful and can help walk you through the struggles being encountered and help in understanding why. It is important to remember that it is common to struggle emotionally and physically after a collision. If you want help, there is help available, and money is accessible through your vehicle insurance, like the funding available for physical health recovery.

2. Walk the route to school or the bus with your child a few times before school starts. Help your child identify places they could go if they need help. 3. Make sure your child knows your full name and phone number and theirs. 4. Do not put your child’s name on their backpack. Instead, put their name and phone number inside, where its not visible to the public. 5. Teach your child to walk with confidence; head up, looking around for people or situations that maybe risky. Making eye contact also implies confidence. 6. Discuss intuition and instinct. Remind your child that they can stay out of harms way by noticing these ‘Chilly Willies or Creepy Vibes’ and leaving the area to seek help from a trusted adult. 7. Teach your children the “Safety Cheer”: NO, GO, YELL, TELL. Practice it with them and remind them to shout it loudly to let people know they need help. 8. Create a Family Password with your children. If someone tries to entice your child to go with them, have your child ask that person for the family password. If the person does not know the password, instruct your child to not go with them, but to run back into the school or to find help immediately. 9. Arrange for a SafeNeighbour. This is someone near your home or school who can be a safe person for your child if they feel frightened or have ran from an unsafe situation.

Now let’s put words together

As long as I can remember, I have always said I want to learn Spanish. I am a “Snow Bird” and trade the cold winter months here for warm and sunny months in Arizona. Now, as you know, Arizona is located right along the border to Mexico. We can cross the border after a short 15-minute drive and we cross at “Los Algodones,” a Mexican border town, best known for its dentists, pharmacies and optometrists. I can honestly say, with no doubt in my mind, that there are at least 25 dentists on each street in the downtown core of this beautiful little town. I have been going to Arizona now for 8 years and the transformation of Los Algodones has been incredible. They now have hotels and new restaurants. I try to go there as often as I can, just to walk around and visit with all the vendors and have an always-incredible Mexican lunch! Getting back to the Spanish; I would love to converse with the Mexican people with more than my very small Spanish vocabulary. So, guess what? I am now teaching myself Spanish with Rosetta Stone Spanish lessons. A little intimidating in the beginning, but you can play the same lesson over and over until you get it. I figured it is always way more fun if you learn something new with friends, so I am going to share my Spanish lesson with you and we can learn together. So, I figured before I started this course that they would start with the easy stuff that we all know, “Hola” (hello), “Adios” (goodbye), the first Mexican word you should learn “Banos” (washroom) and of course “cerveza” (beer). But they strike out in a bold new direction, which is good; mix things up a bit. This is where we will start with lesson one. Now you can read the words but may not know how to pronounce them, just go to your search engine, type in the Spanish word and hit the little microphone icon and they will pronounce it for you. This is going to be fun.

I have been through the first lesson 4 times and every time I go through it, I learn something more. That is the beauty of Rosetta Stone — you can go through the same lesson until it is drilled into your head, which is great for me because I need to have my memory jogged every single day when I am learning a new language. They say learning a new language might be one of the hardest things you will ever do and I believe it. SNC-Lavalin wanted to avoid criminal prosecution for things like corruption and fraud, and Trudeau evidently was not at all worried about any of that, he just wanted to make sure that they got the bid to build infrastructure in Quebec. His Finance Minister Mr. Morneau failed to disclose his private corporations for a house he has in the South of France, our Prime Minister decided to take an all-inclusive trip to visit the Aga Khan on the tax payers dollar, for which he was found guilty for breaking a federal statute, oh and though this is not part of his ethics violations, my favourite is how those who have been groped or touched inappropriately by him just “interpreted or experienced the moment differently”. The Ethics Commissioner has only been in operation since 2007, put in place by former Prime Minister Stephen Harper, so only 2 Prime Ministers have been subjected to the rules. It’s quite possible that previous Prime Ministers and others may have also breached statutes, but let’s look at what we are dealing with today. Prime Minister Harper had several MPs face ethics investigations and 3 out of 8 of them were cleared of any wrong-doing, yet aren’t you happy that the office exists? But our Prime Minister has hit the jackpot! Not only did he breach the ethics and conflict of interest statutes, he lied to parliament, to the media and to all Canadians about it. He wanted to undermine the justice department in by seeking to have them stop criminal prosecution of SNC-Lavalin, and to further their interests. He also tried to influence the Ethics Commissioner by forwarding a report by Anne McLellan who was a former justice minister in advance of the outcome. This could be seen as interference as well. There are no legal consequences at this time, as the Ethics Commissioner can simply levy nominal fines and shame the people who try and take advantage of our people and our country. Our only power is in our power to vote. Congratulations Mr. Trudeau for being the first Prime Minister found guilty of violating a federal statute. Hello Newsy Neighbour readers! The days are getting shorter and as you read this, our kids will be back in school. Unfortunately, in the Internet and email age, our work rarely truly leaves us but a change of scenery helps recharge your batteries. The first quarter fiscal update makes sobering reading, with flat revenues and rising costs. Albert’s debt will hit 60 billion dollars this year (a 50 billion increase in the past 4 years and almost $15,000 for every person in Alberta!) and the interest on that debt will hit 2 billion dollars. We have to get our fiscal house in order as this is not sustainable. Well, my friends, our Prime Minister Trudeau has faced 5 ethics violations in 4 years. To pressure or not to pressure Ms. Wilson-Raybould was the latest question and he chose to do the bidding of SNC-Lavalin and pressure her. He buried a change of law in a bud-

Seniors Abuse A friend told me of some happenings that she had heard about at a senior’s place in another town and province that she knows well, about workers stealing money and the unhealthy environment these precious seniors live in. Anyway, what she told me maybe rumours and hearsay, but it happens so often that you know there must be some truth to It. I feel when you work in a Facility with people, whether it be disabled people or seniors, you are working with people. So, it’s not a job; it’s an honour that you get paid to do. Compassion goes a long way. When seniors are put into a home, they may not get the same level of care as they would if they were into a private home. The staff are overworked and they don't have enough people to give seniors the quality of care they need. I worked in a senior’s home and I felt that most of the workers looked at it as a job. To me, it was an honour that I got to spend time with these precious people; there was no compassion whatsoever from some of the workers. Everything was timing, not time well spent.

Please, folks, let’s start being more loving and caring to one another and maybe, just maybe, sit down and have a talk to our precious seniors and listen to a story or two. Seniors abuse does not just happen in seniors’ home, it happens everywhere. Solicitors calling them trying to scam them and taking the last cent they have. These people are on a fixed budget and have worked hard to have the money they have. There is also physical abuse as well, and seniors may be too weak to defend themselves; it is heartbreaking. And then there is the family who abuses their own, as well. From living with them, yelling at them, and taking their money, manipulating them for their own personal gain and physically harming them. CLASSIC CRAB CAKES

I love watching cooking shows. The truth is, I never used to watch them. Then I found myself channel surfing, trying to find an interesting show to watch instead of all the garbage and news channels, and found myself watching the cooking channel. Diners, Drive-ins and Dives can be fun and I love all the different cities Guy visits. But what I like the best is all the different cooking ideas I get from watching these shows. Like, whoever would have thought to add pineapple to coleslaw or to make your own garlic mayonnaise? I have learned a ton of different recipes when it comes to cooking seafood. I LOVE SEAFOOD and it just might be one of those foods I could eat each and every day. Now, I do also know that it can be very expensive. So I thought in this Luscious Joys I would share with you some ways in which you can have your fish and eat it too! Sometimes the canned stuff can be just as good; well, not really, but when you just cannot bring yourself to lay out the cash for fresh, you can still enjoy your seafood. All these recipes are quick and easy and perfect for when you get that desire for seafood. This first one is one of my very favourite dishes because I absolutely LOVE crab and you do not have to deal with all the work of cracking the shells but still enjoy the flavour of delicious crab.

8 oz canned lump crab meat 1/4 cup finely chopped celery 1/4 cup finely chopped onion 1/2 small clove garlic, finely minced 1 tsp garlic powder 1 tbsp finely chopped red bell pepper 1 egg 2 tbsp mayonnaise 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce 1 cup soft bread crumbs 1 tsp Creole seasoning 4 tbsp butter Pea Shoots Fresh Grapefruit Drain crab meat trying to leave lumps as large as possible. Heat 2 tablespoons butter in a large skillet over low heat; slowly sauté finely diced onion, celery, red pepper, and garlic until tender. Whisk egg in bowl, add mayonnaise, Worcestershire sauce, and Creole seasoning. Combine with sautéed vegetables and soft bread crumbs, mixing well. Add the crab meat and form into loose patties; place on waxed paper-lined plate. Refrigerate for about 1 hour, or until firm, heat remaining 4 tablespoons butter in large skillet over medium-low heat. Gently place crab cakes in skillet and cook for about 5 minutes. Turn and cook for 4 to 5 minutes longer, until cooked through. Slice your grapefruit and llay the grapefruit and pea shoots on top of your crab cakes. Serve with a remoulade sauce or tartar sauce.

CRABBY CRAB DIP

6 oz. cream cheese, softened 1 cup sour cream 1 tbsp chopped green onion few drops hot sauce (to your taste) 1/2 tsp paprika 1 envelope Ranch Dressing mix Salt and black pepper, to taste 6 to 8 ounces crab meat, drained and chopped

Beat cream cheese with sour cream until well blended. Blend in the green onion, hot sauce, paprika, dressing mix. Stir in crab. Taste and adjust seasonings with salt and pepper, if desired. Chill until serving time or heat in a 350°F oven to serve hot. Now, if you do not like the classic seafood, there are at least a million different canned salmon recipes and salmon is sooo good for you. It is an excellent source of vitamin B12, vitamin D and selenium. It is a good source of niacin, omega-3 fatty acids, protein, phosphorus and vitamin B6. It is also a good source of choline, pantothenic acid, biotin and potassium.

Boil the macaroni pasta by bringing a pot of water (2 quarts) to a boil. Add 1 tbsp salt. Add the dry macaroni pasta and cook, uncovered, in a rolling boil for about 10 minutes, or until the macaroni is al dente (slightly firm). Remove from heat, drain, rinse briefly in cold water (macaroni should be still warm after rinsing) and drain again. Mix salmon, mayonnaise, mustard, lemon zest, and lemon juice in a large bowl. Mix in the shallots, parsley, dill, and celery. Stir in drained, warm macaroni, mix while it is still warm. Add Tabasco and freshly ground black pepper to taste. As the macaroni absorbs the mayonnaise, you may need to add some water to the salad to keep it from being dry. Adjust seasonings. Chill before serving.

Finally, and with some difficulty, the woman and the police officer got Jack into the cafeteria and sat him at a table in a remote corner. It was the middle of the morning, so most of the breakfast crowd had already left and the lunch bunch had not yet arrived. The manager strode across the cafeteria and stood by his table."What's going on here, officer?" he asked. “What is all this, is this man in trouble?” “This lady brought this man in here to be fed," the policeman answered. "Not in here!" the manager replied angrily. “Having a person like that here is bad for business.” Old Jack smiled a toothless grin. "See, lady. I told you so. Now if you'll let me go. I didn’t want to come here in the first place.” The woman turned to the cafeteria manager and smiled. “Sir, are you familiar with Eddy and Associates, the banking firm down the street?” The Newsy Neighbour Magazine

“Of course I am," the manager answered impatiently. “They hold their weekly meetings in one of my banquet rooms." “And do you make a good amount of money providing food at these weekly meetings?” “What business is that of yours?" “I, sir, am Penelope Eddy, president and CEO of the company,” she replied. “Oh." The woman smiled again. “I thought that might make a difference." She glanced at the cop who was busy stifling a giggle. “Would you like to join us in a cup of coffee and a meal, officer?” "No thanks, ma'am," the officer replied. “I'm on duty." “Then perhaps, a cup of coffee to go?" "Yes, ma’am. That would be very nice.” The cafeteria manager turned on his heel, “I’ll get your coffee for you right away, officer.” The officer watched him walk away. “You certainly put him in his place,” he said. “That was not my intent. Believe it or not, I have a reason for all this.” She sat down at the table across from her amazed dinner guest. She stared at him intently. “Jack, do you remember me?" Old Jack searched her face with his old, rheumy eyes. “I think so -- I mean you do look familiar.” "I'm a little older perhaps," she said. “Maybe I've even filled out more than in my younger days when you worked here, and I came through that very door, cold and hungry.” "Ma'am?" the officer said questioningly. He couldn’t believe that such a magnificently turned out woman could ever have been hungry. “I was just out of college," the woman began. “I had come to the city looking for a job, but I couldn’t find anything. Finally I was down to my last few cents and had been kicked out of my apartment. I walked the streets for days. It was February and I was cold and nearly starving. I saw this place and walked in on the off chance that I could get something to eat.” Jack lit up with a smile. “Now I remember," he said. "I was behind the serving counter. You came up and asked me if you could work for something to eat. I said that it was against company policy.” “I know," the woman continued. “Then you made me the biggest roast beef sandwich that I had ever seen, gave me a cup of coffee, and told me to go over to a corner table and enjoy it. I was afraid that you would get into trouble. Then, when I looked over and saw you put the price of my food in the cash register, I knew then that everything would be all right.” "So, you started your own business?" Old Jack said. "I got a job that very afternoon. I worked my way up. Eventually, I started my own business that, with the help of God, prospered." She opened her purse and pulled out a business card. “When

you are finished here, I want you to pay a visit to a Mr. Lyons. He’s the personnel director of my company. I’ll go talk to him now and I'm certain he'll find something for you to do around the office." She smiled. “I think he might even find the funds to give you a little advance so that you can buy some clothes and get a place to live until you get on your feet. If you ever need anything, my door is always opened to you.” There were tears in the old man’s eyes. “How can I ever thank you?” he said. "Don't thank me," the woman answered. Outside the cafeteria, the officer and the woman paused at the entrance before going their separate ways. “Thank you for all your help, officer," she said. "On the contrary, Ms. Eddy," he answered. “Thank you. I saw a miracle today, something that I will never forget. And, and thank you for the coffee.”

With this more traditional form of advertising, your choice of print media should match your specific target demographic. Also, clients often tell me that they ran an ad and got little to no response. A single ad is not going to generate business. You need to commit to one of these two methods. Run an ad on a regular basis. Ask to have it on the same page or area each time, be consistent with your branding, choose the ad size and frequency that fit your budget. Basically, it becomes your business listing and a source of reference for those in need of what you are offering. The other campaign is more targeted. You run ads for a season, event or a specific time of the year where your business is most relatable. Again, it will take multiple ads and the copy must address the customer needs. Flyers in mailboxes can target a specific geographic area. Make sure your promotion reaches them at the right time before your sale or promotion. Some homeowners will discard the information, however those who do respond may be enough for a good return on your campaign investment.

Newsletters

Despite complaints about overfull email boxes, newsletters remain a powerful way to get in front of your customers or clients. The secret is in creating the right format to ensure they are read and not deleted. With this in mind I am going to be devote an upcoming column to newsletters. Whether the consumer is looking to hire someone or searching for a specific product they will take a path. It might start with them checking your print ad, then visiting your website or social media and then looking for online references. It is not easy to know how they are going to come to the point of doing business with you. Asking new customers how they found you is a good start. The key to success is in knowing who your target market is. Have a picture of their age range, income, likes/dislikes, lifestyle and social media habits. It is through this data that you can design an advertising strategy to reach them.
