Country comes to city at show Hooves, Horsepower and Heritage are some of the main themes as the Sydney Royal Easter Show returns in 2017. The largest ticketed annual event in the Southern Hemisphere runs from April 6 to 19 at the Sydney Showgrounds at Sydney Olympic Park with a blend of fresh attractions and the traditional family favourites. Each year the Sydney Royal Easter Show attracts an average of 850,000 visitors and with the 2017 show coinciding with NSW school holidays, there is every opportunity for that number to be exceeded. The Royal Agricultural Society of NSW (RAS), the convenor of the Sydney Royal Easter Show works tirelessly throughout the year to preserve and display for all showgoers the nearly 200 years of proud show heritage. At the same time presenting the most contemporary rides and entertainment from around the world. "We get one shot every year at entertaining and educating our domestic and international visitors and we love sending them home having had the best experience possible," RAS General Manager Murray Wilton said. "That fortnight each year when the country comes to the city is our opportunity to educate our visitors about the importance of the agriculture sector while at the same time making it fun and engaging. In 2017 we are confident we have the formula just right." For the first time in 65 years, the Grand Parade will be held in the middle of the day at 1pm on Saturday, April 11. New attractions include "Little Hands On The Land", a kid-sized working farm aimed at teaching children all about agriculture from the crop to the shop. "The Beast" is being introduced to carnival at the Sydney Royal Easter Show for the first time in 2017, a thrilling Europe-sourced attraction which swings riders 43 metres above the crowd below. By popular demand, the "Man from Snowy River" spectacular returns to Spotless Stadium with each night performances. The very best stockmen and 100 animals combine in a thundering display which brings Banjo Paterson's iconic ballad of the Australian outback to life. The RAS has always been very proud of its history and in line with this, for the first time, visitors will be able to wander back in time through the Heritage Pavilion where iconic trophies, decades-old sample bags and other show mementos are on display. The Sydney Royal Easter Show is all about providing value for money and with 12 hours of free entertainment each day and is definitely the best value in Sydney. All tickets have been frozen at last year's prices for purchases online prior to the opening day of the Show. Family tickets purchased pre-show will remain at $99.50. Doomben hosts racehorse retraining triequithon An Olympian and three junior champions will compete at Doomben Racecourse on 25 March The Aquis Racehorse Retraining Triequithon will see equestrian champions battle it out on their retrained racehorses in the spectacular and enthralling event at Doomben Racecourse on March 25. EQ holds annual awards More than 300 passionate equestrians of all disciplines converged on Southbank for the 2016 Equestrian Queensland Annual Awards Evening. Preparing your horse for the dentist By SAMANTHA GUNTER, AEDP Clients regularly ask me about how they should prepare their horse for a dental visit - should they eat? Can they ride before or after? Every dentist is different and they all have their own personal preferences and every owner has different horses and properties but the following are some common things that can help you and your horse get through the dental appointment with ease! Like every horse professional that travels to clients, dentists are usually running very tight on time. In fact there is rarely a day I don’t fall behind for one reason or another. With this in mind, preparing your horse physically as well as mentally is very helpful for your dentist as well as for yourself and your horse. Doing dental work is not painful for the horse but it isn’t the nicest of experiences. Keeping your horse relaxed and comfortable is essential if your horse is going to put up with their annual dental visit. A lot of people ask me whether their horse should miss breakfast the day of the visit, or they skip their usual morning ride. But considering horses are creatures of habit, these small changes in the day can affect the horse a lot. When the dentist arrives midmorning, they meet a hungry or restless horse that wants nothing to do with the scheduled dentist appointment. Keep to your usual routine. We dentists don’t care if your horse has a mouthful of hay when we get there so long as they are as relaxed as they can be. With the above in mind, try to have your horse out and tied up by the time of the appointment. If you have more than one horse being treat-

There is nothing worse than standing at a client’s property, watching them chase their horse around a paddock for 30 minutes in the hot sun. Similarly, if you have a large property, try not to have your horses spread at different ends of the property. Dental gear is heavy and if we have to amble around your five-acre property, it’ll definitely be slow-going. Water is a must for dental work to maintain hygiene and cleanliness, as well as to wash the mouth and tools efficiently. I carry water with me but it is very helpful if the owner has a clean water source close by. This saves my water for properties that are low on water or places I’m unable to get
clean water. Finally, you know your horse better than we do. If you know where he’ll be the most comfortable, let us know. If he needs to be able to see his friends, if he likes to stand in his stable or yard, or if he’s spooky in the wind or rain let us know. If you have a new horse and you wouldn’t know him from the next-door neighbour’s cow then tell us that too. Little things like they hate their ears being touched or hate worming are all helpful little clues that we will take into account. Dentists will use different tactics to make the visit as pleasant as possible for your individual horse. Every horse is different and they all have their own eccentricities but the more relaxed you can get your horse, the better their dental experience will be.

However, many horses that have temporary sweating problems will respond normally to these tests giving many false negatives. I believe clinical signs and history are probably enough to make a diagnosis. The most common question or symptom that clients see is the panting or rapid respiration. Many owners suspect that there is a respiratory problem with their horse. Continued page 11

ture. As we all know, horses are very powerful animals with an enormous muscle mass. As these muscles work, an unbelievable amount of heat is generated in the muscle mass. Nature dictates that for survival, the body temperature has to be maintained at very close to 38 degrees and so it is very important for the body to be able to get rid of this wasted heat energy when exercising. In the horse, most heat dissipation is via the evaporation of sweat and radiation from the skin into the surrounding atmosphere. When the environmental temperature is in the mid 20s and humidity is low, this process is quite efficient and the horse remains comfortable. In mid summer when the temperatures are in the low 30' and humidity is high, heat loss is very inefficient and the horse overheats. Nerve centres in the brain respond to this and in an attempt at self-preservation, the horse starts to pant and breathe rapidly as another attempt at heat loss by exchange of heat with the environmental air breathed into the lungs. Compare this with the dog, which does not sweat at all and relies entirely on panting for heat loss. Anhydrosis or "Puffs" is a condition in horses where basically - m the sweat glands lose the ability

This has been one of the hottest summers on record and none of us has enjoyed it. Most of us hide in the shade, avoid any strenuous activity, and do whatever we can to keep cool. All animals are stressed by heat, but most are able to similarly take steps to adapt to the climate. Our horses are the same, and if left alone, they cope well enough. However, the nature of their primary use, being ridden in some form of human pleasure activity, (rarely work these days), places them in a position where they are particularly vulnerable to heat. When the horse commences to exercise and muscle contracts, energy must be utilised to power the muscle contractions. Biochemical pathways in the muscle fibres process energy stored in the tissues. This energy is obtained from feed in the digestive system and stored as fat and starch. The

In particular, racehorses can be very severely affected because of the tremendous energy requirements for a race. T hey very often overheat and it is a very common cause of poor performance and loss of form. all horses adversely and most are uncomfortable during the hot time of the year. Fortunately very few of these horses in this area progress to true clinical anhydrosis. Places like Townsville and Cairns and in particular, Singapore, have many clinical horses. In our climate, most horses can be perfectly functional during the rest of the year when conditions are more equitable.
If your horse is seriously affected, the simplest thing is simply to spell the horse over the really bad months and plan your training and competition for the rest of the year. Fortunately most of the competitive year in most sports complies with this approach. If you have to train your horse during the bad months, most people tend to get up and work the horse early in the morning. I firmly believe this to be an
incorrect approach and very often the early mornings are extremely hot and humid, the horse heats up, and then the day simply becomes more and more oppressive. It is usually much more satisfactory to work the horse in the early evening when at least the worst heat of the day has passed and in most cases, there is at least a strong breeze to help dissipate the heat and evaporation from sweat. If you feel your horse is having some problems, you should consult with your veterinarian. The horse should be examined to ensure there is no underlying respiratory system problem, and then a plan developed to allow the best management of the horse. Nearly all horses with heat intolerance can be managed to allow them to perform satisfactorily for the rest of the year. The majority of horses will commence sweating again later in the cooler months and be perfectly normal until the next summer.

Locating and identifying lameness in horses is crucial in determining the correct method of treatment.

When a horse suddenly rotates a joint this can result in tearing or stretching of ligaments. A strain is more often less severe than a sprain and is the result of overstretching of ligaments or tendons through unwarranted use or unsuitable movement. These types of injuries are quite common in competition horses, but they can also occur via a direct blow. Continued page 15

So, you are aware that your horse is lame, but are not sure what may be causing it and is the horse lame behind, in front, where exactly? Trying to identify the location of lameness can be quite frustrating and not so easy, even if you are very experienced or a professional practitioner. In many cases lameness, can appear to be moving around, by that I mean that being lame in front could in fact be coming from a soreness issue behind, in other words it could simply be a reaction. Put simply lame in front does not always mean this is where the problem is. It is so important to be aware of your horse's body, so if there is something different in the horse's movement from one day to the next, you will notice it very quickly. It is normally easier to notice and perhaps identify front limb lameness as hind limb lameness tends to be harder to diagnose. There are many cases whereby two legs can appear as being lame. In a recent three-year study, 37 horses with hind-limb lameness were selected for the study, 19 had hind-limb lameness alone, 10 had lameness in both legs of a single side (ipsilateral limbs), and eight had one lame hind-limb and a lame forelimb on the opposite side of the lame hind limb (contralateral limbs). They found that the horses with ipsilateral limb (Located on or affecting the same side of the body) lameness, as determined by inertial sensor analysis, improved when the hind limb alone was anesthetized. Understanding injuries determines treatment  From page 14 The most common injuries tend to be the tendons and ligaments that run from the knee down to the hoof. This will often include the superficial digital flexor tendon, the deep digital flexor tendon and the suspensory ligaments. Muscle strains by overstretching more commonly occur during competition, sore backs and loin injuries can occur with racing horses and often eventing and show jumping horses. The muscles become tight, quite hot and painful. This pain will be reflected by a shortening in stride and perhaps an altered hindquarter soreness. Injuries from falling or rearing up and falling over backwards can create quite severe back injuries and can often cause the spine to impinge on each other and even overlap, these injuries often occur in the saddle area. Horses with poor confirmation or who are perhaps long in the back possibly may be more prone to back related injuries. Laminitis, which is also known as founder, is generally related to diet. Very commonly this condition occurs when horses consume an excess amount of carbohydrates which can alter the bacteria balance in the caecum. This can lead to the release of lactic acid and endotoxins. The lactic acid and endotoxins cause the large digital arteries in the hoof to expand, the blood flow is then increased and causes a large amount of constriction of the smaller capillaries which nourish the laminae. The laminae become deprived of oxygen and begins to swell, this then damages the delicate tissues of the hoof. If this situation is not attended to immediately the inner structure of the hoof may die. The horse's stance begins to change by placing the two front hooves out in front to take weight. It is important to attend to this condition as soon as possible and treat accordingly. There are many extremely effective ways to manage laminitis in horses. Pain management is one of the most important factors here and a very good hoof specialist. Factors that tend to bring laminitis on in
horses are an excess consumption of too much grain, overeating of rich grass and excessive amounts of protein. There are many other complications that can occur with laminitis and if not attended to quickly there can be permanent damage to the horse when the coffin bone becomes detached from the hoof wall and rotates. In severe cases, it can penetrate the sole of the hoof. In the case of acute laminitis, it becomes a medical emergency and veterinary attention must be immediate. Arthritis is very common in horses and is generally referred to as degenerative joint disease, this disease takes several different forms but usually begins with an inflamed joint capsule and can progress to a much more serious condition with even fusion of the joint. Degenerative joint diseases can affect old and young horses, the most common symptoms associated with arthritis is stiffness and a reduced range of movement and then lameness. Swollen, tender and fluid filled joints are generally a result of joint stress or injury this condition is known as Acute serous arthritis, and is also known as acute synovitis, this condition may not progress to degenerative joint disease When bacteria from the bloodstream invade the joints, they can destroy cartilage and cause irreversible damage, this condition is known as infectious or septic arthritis. Bone spavin and Osselets are other forms of arthritis. Another common form of arthritis is shoulder joint arthritis this is generally caused by a fracture from a horse being

kicked or perhaps running into a stationary object, whereas osteochondrosis of the shoulder joint may lead to degenerative arthritis. Osteochondrosis generally occurs in younger growing horses. Eventing celebrates 60 year milestone Sixty years ago, Neale Lavis and his mount Benalong were awarded the Three-Day Horse Trial Trophy at Australia’s first threeday event. It was the beginning of a proud tradition of the sport in Australia and the Sydney International Horse Trials remain a premier fixture on the eventing calendar to this very day. To mark the 60th anniversary of the event, the Sydney International Horse Trials will be celebrating the achievements of eventing champions, both past and present, on the national and world stage. This year the Sydney International Horse Trials will be an intimate affair, tailor-made to eventing enthusiasts, running eventing classes only. Neale Lavis
Neal Lavis at the 1960 Rome Olympics where he won gold in team eventing and individual.
Neale Lavis was a member of the four-man Australian equestrian team that made history by winning gold in the three-day team event at the 1960 Rome Olympic Games. Lavis, a former rodeo rider who farmed cattle, finished second to Morgan in the individual event. Lavis, 30 at the time, was the youngest of the Rome Olympic team. Riding 'Mirrabooka', he was almost faultless over the three days of competition. He bought the horse in Cooma for £100, and after the Olympics was offered £10,000 but refused to sell
him. Lavis won the inaugural Australian three-day event in Sydney in 1957 and the Great Auckland one-day event in 1960. He went to England in 1960 and competed successfully in jumping, fox-hunting and team events in Surrey, White City, and Badminton. Lavis competed again at the 1964 Tokyo Olympic Games. In 1999, Lavis was awarded the Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM) for his service to the equestrian sports as a competitor, coach, and administrator, and to the community. Neale Lavis was inducted into the EA Hall of Fame in the Individual Achievement.

Apollo's passion for horses started at a young age watching his mother, the wellknown Sue Spence, compete in everything from cross country show jumping to equestrian. The family horse 'Socks', a beige Quarterhorse who was named after his four white legs, would eagerly fly over the jumps around the course with ease then shower the young aspiring performer in horse kisses. The screen star learnt at a young age the powerful connection between a horse and its owner and naturally gravitated to Natural Horsemanship following in the steps of his mother. At age 11 his parents brought him Mindy, an affectionate slightly over weight white miniature pony with an untamable appetite for apples. The family began to grow with Yogi coming soon after, followed by Sunny the 17 hand

What to do when your horse says ‘no’ By TANJA KRAUS At some point in our journey, we will come across a situation in which our horse says ‘no’ to what we are asking him to do. Without addressing each individual situation, here are some ideas to help you work through this with your horse. First, we need to make a decision as to why we think the horse is saying no. Does he understand what we are asking ? Sometimes the horse truly doesn't 'get' what it is we are asking - which could be because we are asking the wrong way (our body position is telling him to do something else), or simply because he hasn't been asked to do it before, or if he is fairly new at a task. I see it in things like lunging, moving the hind, backing up pretty often - the handler thinks they are asking the horse to lunge, but their body is pulling the horse on top of them. If you think the horse doesn't understand, you need to go ahead and teach him what the correct response is to what you are asking, by asking, and then releasing when he makes a move towards what it is that we want. **Note - more pressure is not the answer in this situation. Patience and waiting is. Is he worried ? Sometimes our horses say no when they are worried about something. Float loading, crossing a creek, even cantering can all be an issue that can cause worry in your horse. It is important to look at the horse and see if there are any signs that he is worried - worry lines, tightness in the jaw or lips - you must look at his body language to determine if he is

worried. If he is worried you will need to build trust between him and you, so he feels that he can do something he may not want to, because he trusts you that he is not going to get hurt from doing it. Use your skills to build trust between you and your horse, so he feels empowered to do what you are asking. ***Note - Adding more pressure here is not the answer. That brings us to - If you feel that he does understand, and he is not worried, he is just saying no. Does he believe you ? The simple answer is no - if he does understand what you are asking, and he isn't worried - it means that the question (or the ask) is not important enough to act on, (when it comes from you). So what that means is, you must establish enough respect, so the horse does believe you. You may think that the horse has respect for you, and he might in certain circumstances.
What we need to establish is enough respect so he is happy to do things you are asking in any circumstance. Respect is established by us being consistent, and following through with our requests. I must stress here - you may think that your horse is not worried but he is worried. I see it all the time on a trail ride - the horse stops at a certain point and the rider will say "oh he just doesn't want to leave his paddock, he is being naughty". No, he doesn't want to leave the security and safety of his paddock and his herd and he doesn't trust you enough to lead him away from them. This is just one example. We need to think like horses, so we can understand what motivates their decision making process'. Here are the top five things that I see regularly, which compromises your relationship; 1. Allowing your horse to rub on you. 2. Allowing your horse to 'take' 'his' feed from you (for example his head in the bucket as you walk along to put it in his paddock). 3. Allowing your horse to lead you - (for example you are going somewhere and your horse wants to go that way - he leads in front). 4. Allowing your horse to graze in hand, and following him around as he moves to new grass (he is leading you). 5. Allowing your horse to move your feet (for example, you stop to talk to your friend, your horse moves close into your space, you move away as you are claustrophobic). I’m sure a lot of you will have your own set of ground and ridden exercises to help you build trust, respect and confidence in both parties (rider and horse).

Introducing Young Judges Competitions 10 – 13 yrs and 14 – 17 yrs at the following shows
RIDING PONY JUNIOR JUDGING The Queensland Riding Pony Committee will be introducing Junior Judging into their programs in 2017. The Riding Pony Stud Book Society (RPSBS) Qld Young Judges Scheme is a new trial scheme that aims to increase our young members' sportsmanship, knowledge of the Riding Pony breed and their involvement in the RPSBS Society. RPSBS Young Judges Classes will be run for two age groups. Young Judges 10 and under 14 yrs and Young Judges 14 and under 18 yrs. In 2017 four shows will host qualifier Young Judges classes. These shows include Toowoomba Royal, Northern NSW SHC Hack Championships, RPSBS State Show and Brisbane Royal plus a final to be held at RPSBS Qld Champion of Champions Show In September at Park Ridge. Young Judges who enter competitions at these shows will receive an emailed Young Judges Information Package from RPSBS Qld Development Committee to give them information on the event and how it will be conducted. The RPSBS Qld Development Committee is aiming to plan more youth development opportunities that may include training days and seminars, but these are still in the planning process. Equine Assisted Therapy can help with depression How does Equine Assisted Therapy help people with depression? It's a normal part of being human to feel sad and down now and again, life is full of high points and low points, however, depression is a condition characterised by feeling low for an extended period of time, sometimes for no apparent reason. Depression is a condition that can impact your whole life - you may feel like you have no motivation, you can't seem to get stuff done, you don't like who you have become, you don't want to see your friends and family or socialize and the things that used to make you feel happy no longer please you. You may feel overwhelmed, irritable, angry, indecisive, sad, miserable, tired, wound up and tight with a churning gut. You may notice that you rely on drugs and alcohol to get through and it might be difficult to concentrate or sleep. Depression impacts how you feel about yourself- you may feel hopeless, useless and like you are a burden to other people, you might feel like nothing good ever happens to you and that you just can't get it together. You might even feel like there is no point to anything. It's really important to reach out and get help - no one is immune to mental health issues and we all need a shoulder to cry on, someone to talk to and a place to feel heard and supported from time to time. Depression can be a very isolating, lonely condition and generally humans need other

They are also wired for relationship and provide non-judgemental, caring support and honest feedback in a therapy session. Equine therapy generally doesn't involve a lot of talking- it's more about remembering how to get in touch with what you are feeling and allowing those feelings to inform your life rather than stuffing them down and
staying out of touch with who you are. So how does Equine Assisted Therapy help? 1.You get to talk to a mental health professional- someone who is trained to provide support and to listen to your story. It is amazing how helpful it is to have a neutral person that you can talk to and just get it out rather than have it constantly going around in your head! They will also teach you tools that you can implement yourself to help you deal with your depression. 2.It occurs outside in the fresh air in a paddock or arena with horses - nature heals us, our biorhythms change, our breathing slows down and we have space to calm down and re-gain perspective. 3.Horses are very aware and present and they ask that of anyone around them, so working alongside the horses you are encouraged to be in the here and now- there is no space for all of those thoughts, you have to be present to the horse and to your relationship with the horse. 4.Horses provide immediate feedback, they respond to our body language and to our feelings or to the suppression of our feelings. Horses encourage us to feel, they feel safe when we are expressing what is really going on for us. Just being around a horse tends to help us to feel good- the smell, the feeling, their warmth and empathy. The do's and don'ts of moving horses Cattle ticks, the most serious external parasite of cattle in Australia, can attach to horses and be spread via horse movements. The risk is high with horses moving south from coastal Queensland where cattle ticks are endemic. For this reason, there are varying movement requirements for horses in north-east NSW and Queensland. The three areas that have special significance (see map) are: Tick Infested Queensland Tick Free Queensland Tick Free NSW. Stock travelling between these areas may require inspection, treatment and/or a permit. Contact NSW DPI’s Cattle Tick Program for information: Do's Hang up your horse rugs and saddle when visiting tick-infested Queensland and leave your hay on the truck. Cattle ticks have been found on horses after treatment due to reinfestation from rugs, tack and hay. Stop at a crossing office when moving across the Queensland or NSW tickline with horses. You are required by law to have your horse checked or treated at a treatment centre to prevent cattle tick outbreaks in Tick Free Areas. Give 24 hours notice and obtain an appointment time before arriving at a treatment centre. This will help prevent a delay to your journey, as treatment facilities are staffed to meet confirmed appointments only. Check your horse thoroughly for ticks in the six weeks following a trip to a cattle tick infected area of Queensland. The cattle ticks may be resistant to treatments at the border, or your horse may be reinfested from a rug or other tackle. Report any ticks you find to NSW Department of Primary
Report cattle ticks See the following diagrams and descriptions to help you identify ticks: Bush tick - Legs are dark redbrown and the first pair are close to the snout. Cattle tick - Legs are pale cream

Don’t arrive at a Queensland or NSW treatment centre without first giving 24 hours notice, and obtaining an appointment time. Don’t let your horse go unchecked for ticks in the six weeks following a trip to Queensland. Don’t ignore unusual ticks you
