Competing in the world’s longest horse race The Mongol Derby across the Mongolian countryside is featured in the Guinness Book of Records as the world’s longest and toughest horse race. The ninth running of the Derby is scheduled for August 9 this year and Australia’s own Warren Sutton is one of 12 men and 22 women, from nine countries, who will compete in the 1000km ride on semi-wild horses. He will be part of the Aussie contingent comprising nine other riders - five men and four women. The race recreates Chinggis Khaan’s ancient horse messenger system in epic fashion. The hardy and semi-wild native horses of Mongolia reprise their traditional role as the legs and lungs of the adventure and the horse stations, or morin urtuus, will be manned by nomadic herding families as they traditionally were. The messengers themselves will be played by horsemen and adventurers from around the world all riding up to 160kms a day, navigating independently and changing horses at 40 kilometre intervals. Working in the thoroughbred racing industry for 30 years, Warren knows winning means everything and has his eye firmly on the Mongol Derby finish line. He is confident he has the experience and skill to achieve this grand feat. Following graduation from Geelong’s Marcus Oldham College, Warren’s first foray into the horse industry was a 20-year stint with Lindsay Park Racing during the Colin, Peter and David Hayes dynasty. During his time with Lindsay Park he honed his skills as track rider, foreman, horse breaker, assistant trainer and property manager and has

In Thailand and South Korea, he conducts Young Horse Clinics and private seminars in horse education. His skill has taken him around the world,
educating horses in Australia, Asia, South Africa, England and France. Warren’s initial invitation to Thailand was to educate all the young horses for the potential Olympic team coached by Andrew Hoy. His expertise extended to the horse film industry, as horse wrangler for Ghostrider, Sun and Moon, The Frontier and many TV commercials and special events. Trying to stop him are 33 competitors including a cattle herder, a dairy farmer, a potato farmer, an ostrich rider, a dog sledder, a psychologist, an artist, a banker, a private investigator. Beach horse racing The Mackay Airport Beach Horse Races, Australia's most unique Horse Racing Event has been acquired by Purple Betty Productions and will be Under New Management from 2017. This means big changes for the event and the way the races are structured. The most important change will be Racing Queensland's presence on the day to review the track and the program that now incorporates Ex-thoroughbred race horses. The amount of Races has decreased slightly from previous years so the horses can be paraded and form can be established. There will be Clydesdales Red Coats and there will also be Pony Rides for the littlies. "We will aim to add more races back in from 2018, however for our first year we wanted to ensure that all the changes would run efficiently" Event Manager Sarah Annett's said "We are very excited to show the horse community how committed we are to improving the Event and looking after them on the day". The August 19 race day will include; Quarter Horse, ExThoroughbred, All Breeds, Youth Only (12-17) and Mixed Breed. Race nominations are only $100 with prize money totalling over $9,000.00. Herbal approach to treating skin allergies By CATHERINE MCDOWELL The problem with Queensland Itch is that it is initiated by a variety of causes and then perpetuated by another variety of causes. Most often the initial reason for the itch in a horse starting off with sensitive skin is some sort of metabolic stress whether that be climatic or illness or difficulty in breaking down (usually in the liver) some sort of chemical substance showing up in feed or supplements. Otherwise the itch is initiated by insect bites or by mites or fungal infestation taking up residence in an area of rubbing where the skin has been injured. However initiated, once the skin is damaged and if the immune system is not totally healthy, the irritation is maintained by the residents, very often fungal whose interests lie in maintaining the status quo. My initial approaches to this problem as with all other health problems is to address the internal causes and allow the skin to heal itself. This has proven inefficient and often fruitless as the initial cause is so variable and may already have passed on in any case. Recently then, I have been approaching it on the grounds that if we can provide healing agents and immune system boosters to the damaged area and antifungal and antibacterial agents to the colonies of bugs, we will get an earlier result and will in many cases fix the problem altogether if the initiating circumstances have passed on. This is not to say what we are now prescrib-

We have been conducting trials using this latest approach recently on horses with encouraging results and I have long used the same group of herbs on dog skin problems which are rife and on tropical skin conditions in humans. My standard skin allergy treatment given as a drench is normally my first recommendation to those with horses showing excessive sensitivity to insects and/or scratching behaviour which creates bare patches and obvious thickening and scarring of the skin. The first task is to clear toxins from the blood and to begin the process of healing the skin from the inside out. After five or six weeks into the course I
encourage my clients to give me feedback so I can recommend the subsequent program to completely get rid of the problem if it has not already gone by then.

Greasy Heel, Rain Scald and Mud fever are in fact, different presentations of the same disease and are directly related to persistent wet conditions. The organism that causes the above three conditions is known as Dermatophilus. This is a type of bacteria that requires a particular environment to grow and survive. Primarily the requirement is protection from the oxygen and light in the environment. The bug needs to be able to hide somewhere and if the conditions are right, the germ establishes itself, forms colonies and invades local tissues, in this case, the skin, and causes disease. the back and top-line. Greasy Heel affects the lower limbs, most commonly the back of the pastern and Mud Fever the front of the cannon bones. The different areas have some slightly different characteristics that predispose them to infections. The top-line usually is not a problem in well-conditioned healthy horses. These have nice oily skin and a very rounded elastic skin contour that water easily runs off. Horses that are debilitated have drier skin and little pockets that can hold moisture and not dry out so quickly. Their hair coat also tends to be a little longer. The pasterns, in particular the heels, often have longer hair and a number of grooves and contours that hold water. The front of the cannons obviously shed water easily but the skin is relatively thin and taut in this area. The major culprit that then contributes to development of disease is mud. Obviously the heels are usually covered, and often submerged, in mud. The cannon almost always have mud spattered all over them and the top-line can have mud under different conditions. The mud stuck to the wet skin provides a five star environment for the Dermatophilus organism to invade. The organism is ubiquitous, that means it is a normal environmental organism that lives everywhere. It is not contagious as such, it simply is everywhere and is on the lookout for somewhere to colonise. The bacteria invade the moist irritated skin and provoke an even greater inflammatory reaction this causes serum to exude and enables the formation of a

The recent rains and prospects of another couple of months of the same, poses many problems for the health of the horse. In particular, we see an increase in the incidences of laminitis, colic, and skin disease. Skin diseases are very common and a large number of horses are affected. The big three problems, Rain Scald, Greasy Heel and Mud Fever, are in fact, different presentations of the same disease. All are directly related to persistent wet conditions and can be difficult to prevent. As always, an understanding of how they occur is fundamental in being able to introduce management practices to protect your horse. Obviously the simplest practice is to keep your horse dry. Easy enough if stabling facilities are available however this won’t apply to the majority of horses. There is nothing wrong with washing your horse as long as he is able to dry off quickly and the skin returns to normal. The problems occur when the skin remains wet for prolonged periods.
scab which now replaces the mud as a cover for the organism. The skin infection can spread very quickly and the typical presentations occur Theoretically, treatment is simple. Expose the organism to virtually any antibiotic or antiseptic agent and it is quickly killed. It is not resistant to drugs. The difficulty is getting the drugs to contact the organism. Obviously if the bug is hiding under the cove of mud or scab, and the drugs are applied to the surface, they do not come in contact. Similarly injectable or systemic drugs are carried in the blood but there is no blood supply to the nooks and crannies where the germ is hiding. The key to treatment is to get rid of the cover. All mud should be washed off the horse’s legs and body at least twice daily and most importantly, the skin dried with a towel. Any longer hair should be clipped or removed. Scabs are a lot more difficult. They often are quite painful, and there obviously already is infection present and so the horse resents attempts to remove the scab. This is critical however and measures must be taken to remove the scab. This may require sedation. Bandaging the area with a surgical soap or oil, or lanolin based ointment to soften the scab to aid removal can be very helpful. Once the scab is removed, the organism can be easily killed. Sometimes there is acute inflammation and irritation to the skin and a topical corticosteroid ointment can help. A particular problem for rain scald can be horses with rugs that are out in the paddock in rain. continued page 11

Prompt treatment is essential for success  from page 10 The rug gets wet, the weather is hot and humid, soaks the skin, causes irritation and the germ prevails. It is better to leave the horse un-rugged than have a persistently wet rug predisposing to disease. Greasy Heel often poses a particular extra problem which can make it one of the most difficult diseases of all to treat. The Dermatophilus organism can cause an allergic type reaction in some horses. The correct term is an immune mediated disease. In this situation the body mounts an antibody reaction to the presence of the germ which causes a vasculitis. This means inflammation of the capillaries and blood vessels. The vessels break down and serum leaks into the tissues and the lower legs swell. In particular, the reaction makes the skin extra sensitive to ultra violet light. The condition is far more common and much worse in chestnut and light coloured horses and breeds that have a finer or more sensitive skin. Once the reaction has been set up, it will persist even after the organism has been killed because of the continual reaction to light and the vasculitis in the blood vessels. These horses often require a course of systemic cortisone to control the intense inflammatory reaction occurring in the tissues. Once the problem is established, our approach at Redlands is to control the inflammation, remove hair, scab, and mud and apply medications.
We commonly use a surgical type shampoo that is either iodine or chlorhexidine based to thoroughly clean the area and remove debris, and apply topical medications according to the presentation. We also see a marked increase in laminitis and hoof infections during wet weather. The laminitis can certainly be due to the green grass and increased load of available sugar, the so called "Equine Metabolic Syndrome", which is a subject in itself, but often is just an environmentally induced inflammation of the laminae caused by continual exposure to wet conditions. This is not usually as potentially devastating as the true toxin induced founders however the mechanical manifestations can be the same and treatment is urgent and essential. Hoof infections occur most commonly in unshod horses and any area of overgrowth, cracks, or chipping allow moisture and mud to infiltrate and set up inflammation and lameness. Bare footed horses should have their feet regularly attended to by a farrier on a four to five week basis to ensure no weaknesses develop. Colic occurs commonly with any change in the weather. In periods of continual rain, all animals tend to be miserable and stand around "moping". As a result, they do not graze and eat as regularly as they would normally do and it is the disruption to the normal routine which creates gut disturbances and can lead to colic.
Thrush is a very common bacterial infection that occurs in the hoof, specifically in the region around the frog. The bacterium involved is Fusobacterium necrophorum, and occurs naturally in the environment in wet, muddy, or unsanitary conditions, such as an unclean stall - and grows best with low oxygen.
Symptoms The most obvious sign of thrush is usually the odor that occurs when picking out the feet. Additionally, the infected areas of the hoof will be black in color and will easily break or crumble when scraped with a hoof pick. Most horses do not become lame if infected with thrush. However, if left untreated, the bacteria may migrate deeper into the sensitive parts of the hoof and result in lameness.
Treatment and prevention Treatment for horses with thrush includes twice-daily picking of the feet and cleaning out the two collateral grooves and the central sulcus, scrubbing clean using a detergent or disinfectant and warm water, and coated with a commercial thrushtreatment product or iodine For best results kept hooves dry and in a clean environment.

Dietary causes of neuro-muscular disorders By JENNY PATERSON B.Sc www.calmhealthyhorses.com Have you ever struggled with a horse which has one or more of the following problems? z Muscle 'Soreness' z Sacro-iliac problems, trouble with the canter, bunny-hopping, swapping leads behind z Hollow posture z Girthiness' z Tight ham-strings, not tracking up, choppy and short-stepping z Hard to sit/ride z Trouble with saddle fitting z Muscle 'weakness' Those who have will know how exasperating, let alone expensive it can be to get to the bottom of them. The issues listed can easily be misdiagnosed as physical problems but actually turn out to be physiological, in other words bio-chemistry problems. These issues are all too common in horses who live on a staple diet of short, green grass, the mineral imbalances of which can be inadvertently compounded by the addition
of potassium-rich supplementary feeds which include Lucerne, soy products, molasses, kelp or seaweed and many herbs. (Note: These items may be just fine for horses who do not have any issues). When horses are subjected to chronic mineral imbalances from an inappropriate diet, their self-regulating mechanisms are apt to malfunction and the mineral content of the blood and body fluids can no longer maintain a state of equilibrium.
Since this is the same fluid in which nerves and muscles bathe and from which they draw the minerals required to properly operate, once it has become defective so does nerve impulse transmission and muscle function. It soon becomes visible on the 'outside' of the horse, looking for all the world like the horse has some kind of physical problem, when the underlying cause is a chemistry one. Issues frequently show up in the hind-quarters first. If nerves cannot send the right
messages to the large muscle masses of the hind-quarters it isn't hard to see how locomotion becomes compromised. On the one hand, muscles can be come tight (see the horse in the picture), resulting in the hollowed out posture along with some or all of the issues listed above. Even the best fitting saddle is going to cause discomfort when a horse is in this state. On the other hand, disturbances to bio-chemistry can also cause muscles to become weak, resulting in staggers, locking stifles, stumbling, knuckling over, slow eating and general lethargy. Horse teeth: how and why they differ to humans? By SAMANTHA GUNTER, AEDP Many people cringe at the idea of filing horse's teeth. Luckily for us, our teeth don't require that kind of maintenance. But why do horse teeth need to be physically filed away? Firstly, horses have Hypsodont teeth, humans have Brachyodont teeth. Hypsodont teeth have a large reserve of tooth crown inside the head, only erupting a small crown with which to grind. Brachyodont (human teeth) are static and have only a short crown - no extra tooth to erupt. Horses use their teeth much more than humans do. Horses can grind for up to 20 hours a day versus humans who grind significantly less. For this reason they wear through their teeth more quickly then we do and need a reserve of crown to allow them to grind effectively over the years. To give a simple example, think of horse teeth like chalk. As you write on the blackboard the chalk gets worn away. For a while there is enough chalk to keep writing but eventually you wear it down to nothing and it can no longer write. Horsesâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; teeth will erupt more quickly when they are younger. As the tooth erupts, the tooth material hasn't had time to completely harden. This means it wears away more quickly as the horse grinds and the horse's body compensates by erupting more tooth in the younger years. This, and the many changes that go on in a young horse's mouth
as they shed baby teeth, is the reason a dentist will want to see a young horse more often than an older horse. The general rule is once the horse is six-years-old, then the eruption slows but this is dependent on each individual horse. The chalk analogy is why older horses struggle with their teeth. Once the tooth runs out, the horse loses all ability to grind hard fibres effectively. The horse's stomach is very small and is equipped to digest very small fibres. If the horse is unable to grind feed effectively, they will eventually lose weight and condition and be at greater risk of colic and choke. There are many different feeding options on the market for older horses that have difficulty chewing and it is relatively easy to maintain a horse well into their senior years. The longer your horse has working teeth, the cheaper, less stressful and more comfortable maintaining your horse will be. Smart feeding tips for horse owners By ANTOINETTE FOSTER Dip. Nut. Equine Nutritional Therapist, Medical Herbalist, Nutritional Therapist Genetics Š 2017 Horse owners are always on the look out for tip to help in their horse feeding routines so I have compiled a list to help: 1. Maximise Pasture by rotating and strip grazing. Look at dividing your paddocks, particularly if you have large paddocks. If you have a small amount of land, like I do, you can still divide your paddocks by creating different sections and closing them off when they are over eaten. A clever idea, is to allow access to a walking track and a quiet, resting area to that horses move and then rest in - places that aren't full of grass. With small properties make sure you pick up your manure and don't harrow. Removing the manure regularly will allow the ground to recover more quickly. 2. Slow down! Try a slow feed net/bin to reduce wastage and increase hay life. If you are lucky enough to have access to round bales invest in a slow hay feeding net which you can secure safely over the round bale, this not only slows your horse's chewing down but also lowers wastage. If you don't have access to a round bale then invest in large hay nets with small holes, or a slow feed bin. This is particularly useful for those managing easy keepers as you can use lucerne and not have them eat it all before it touches the ground! 3. Do horses naturally seek out nutrients that they require for their health and well-being? Some horses eat dirt or chew bark, this is quite common in domesticated horses and the licking of dirt for example is often a way to increase salt intake. In some studies, types of dirt contain higher levels of iron and copper and it is thought that horses seek out this type of dirt and will lick the dirt to uptake these nutrients. We don't really know why horses tend to lick dirt or chew bark but it does appear that horses behave this way if perhaps their diet is nutrient deficient. I believe the best way to eliminate this type of practice in horses is to ensure that horses have an appropriate level of roughage always. We don't have a good understanding of the horse's ability to self-medicate however. 4. Position your food on the ground. Remember horses are grazing animals and it is very important to place feed bins and hay feeders either on the ground or low down. Locating feeders up to chest height or even higher interferes with the normal digestive process. Placing feeders high does not allow the horse to chew and grind his feed normally. If the horse is not digesting its feed properly, they are also not going to be utilising it properly. 5. Roughage, roughage, roughage! Horses require a high level of roughage (pasture, hay) per day to ensure a healthy digestive system. This can be predominantly pasture hay and some lucerne, which has the advantage of being low in starch and sugars. Starving your horse of roughage can cause any number of issues, the worst being ulcers or colic. Particularly those on sandy soils, ensuring your horse has adequate roughage is vital for digestive and overall health. 6. Does increasing the intake of grain impact on horses prone to colic? Colic is associated with abdominal pain and there are many causPage 16
es. The gastrointestinal tract is very long and very complex and really is not a particularly superior design. Certain types of feed can contribute to colic, overfeeding grain is one of them. One of the most important aspects of managing digestive health which in turn relates to colic incidences is lack of pasture or excellent quality hay. What may also impact on the horse's digestive health and in turn colic is a decreased intake of water, so therefore it is very important to ensure that horses have plenty of fresh water available to them 24/7. It is not possible to point the finger specifically at grain being a cause of colic as there are many risk factors. One of the most common causes of colic is insufficient roughage, so ensuring that your horse is receiving an appropriate level of roughage will also reduce the risk of colic and other digestive health issues. The hindgut of the horse is unique and contains a bio system of microorganisms which break down fibre, the small intestines generally digests and absorbs sugar and starch. If a horse consumes a large feed that contains an elevated level of grain this can certainly create issues by spilling over into the hindgut. Microbial breakdown of starch and sugar can produce a more acidic situation this is also known as hindgut acidosis. 7. Feeding a hot brand mash and has been mentioned in the past that this could help to prevent colic particularly in winter? A brand mash fed in winter will not prevent colic. There are many different suggestions to help with the horse's nutritional needs that are quite preposterous. Nutrition can be complicated by incorrect advice and a lack of understanding in the management of horses in general. 8. Overfeeding protein and does this increase the energy level in horses? Protein really should not have this type of effect on horses as it primarily contains amino acids and doesn't contribute much to energy production. Sugars and starch can affect behaviour in some horses. But increasing carbohydrate intake is very likely to influence behaviour in horses that are genetically predisposed. By increasing sugars and starch cortisol levels may also increase this can certainly cause behavioural changes. 9. Horse owners concerned about the possibility of choke. In horses this is an oesophageal obstruction, basically almost any type of feed can cause choke this is generally related to horses that eat their feed to quickly and do not chew the feed efficiently. By ensuring that your horse has sufficient roughage and dental health checks will reduce the risk of choke. 10. Which grain is the best grain to feed your horse? Corn for example is used a lot with ele-
vated level performance horses but unlike oats cannot be fed whole as the outer husk is too hard so therefore some type of processing must take place to enable it to be fed safely. Corn is quite calorie dense and has an average starch concentration of about 70% so certainly is very suitable for these types of horses. My preference is always whole oats as I love the fact that horses can be fed this grain whole safely. It is also a grain that is much lower in energy and protein than any other grain and more readily digestive and utilised by the horse. 11. Giving horses water straight after a hard workout is not recommended. It is important to allow the horse to cool down, lower the heart rate and respiratory rate and ensure that the body temperature returns to normal. It is also important to keep the muscles moving after intense exercise. Not allowing the horse to call down increases the risk of dehydration and in turn can cause some colic like symptoms. 12. Supplementation for maximisation. Feeding a daily supplement will pay for itself in the long run by making sure your horses receive the correct daily nutrient intake with a balanced diet. A daily supplement plays a supporting role to your horseâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s feed program. Make sure you access a trusted source and products that deliver, are safe, natural and easy to feed and offer support and advice so you can choose the right product for your horse. 13. Choosing your feeds. A simple non-complicated diet is essential for the health of your horse. Feeding longer chop chaffs, some grains such as oats or even steamed and rolled barley, mixing your own or using a high fibre, high quality compressed pellet, is not only healthy but economical too. Feeds, such as steamed and compressed long stem fibre pellets are a great option as they slow the chewing process down and this is a great thing for digestion. 14. Talk to a qualified nutritionist. If you want to gain the most out of your feed rations and ensure you are not doubling up or feeding the wrong feed to your horse, contacting a qualified nutritionist is essential. The Horse Report Endurance riders crank up the horse power in Imbil More than 150 endurance riders from as far afield as Osaka in Japan and Mt Martha in Victoria saddled up in Imbil to take on the diverse forestry terrain around the Stirling's Crossing Equestrian Complex over 40km, 80km and 120km distances. The Australian Endurance Riders Association (AERA) event attracted around 400 visitors to the region thanks to families and support crew members joining the riders, temporarily adding over 40 per cent to Imbil's population. Event host and owner of Stirling's Crossing Equestrian Complex, Matthew Sample said he was delighted with how the event, which was oversubscribed, had gone and congratulated the winners on their exceptional results. "It was wonderful to have the current Queensland State Champion and Imbil local Kaylea Maher take the win in the lightweight category and Boreen Point resident and 2016 Pat Slater Cup winner Kelsey Irvine take home the middleweight title," Mr Sample said. "Kenilworth was also well represented with
Leigh Ann Sample taking second in the lightweight category as well as 'best conditioned' while her son Matty came in third in the juniors after winner Emma Dimech and runner-up Maeve Paten. "It really was a fantastic weekend and the feedback we've had has been really positive from all who were involved. This is the second major event we've hosted at the complex and we're really happy with how it all went. "Stirling's Crossing Equestrian Complex is the only purpose-built endurance venue in Australia and we've worked hard to create an environment where the riders can really get the best results both for themselves and their horses. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I am really proud of how everything came together and we are now looking forward to the next major event in early August when we host FEI 1*, 2* and 3* rides including the Bullio Arabians 2* Trans Tasman Challenge. Sharing unique horsemanship with the world By HANA WILSON Gold Coast girl Tanja Kraus is heading abroad with her unique horsemanship clinics this year. Tanja is travelling to the United Kingdom in July, followed by New Zealand in August and concluding her international commitments in the United States in September, where she will not only teach but once again ride in the Cowboy Dressage World Finals. From humble beginnings riding her standardbred gelding around Currumbin District Horse Club as a student, Tanja has gone on to become the events co-ordinator and eventually club president. Tanja's love of all things horse is unwavering. When Tanja first started teaching professionally, it was a few private lessons here and there and now she is travelling the world to share her skills and knowledge. She has a unique ability to pass on her knowledge in a safe environment, with a clear and concise teaching method, while complimenting students existing training. Her passion is teaching kind horsemanship philosophies to develop a lasting partnership for the horse and rider. Tanya's clinics unsurprisingly receive rave reviews. "My inspiration is teaching the horse and rider to be in tune, more flexible, supple, strong, athletic

Sunshine Coast to host Mane Event spectacular The Sunshine Coast Riding for the Disabled at North Arm are busy organising an amazing event which will attract visitors from Brisbane, Sunshine Coast, Gympie and Maryborough. Scheduled for Sunday, July 30, The Sunshine Coast Mane Event will showcase ‘Horses as our Heroes’ and everything to do with life in the country. It will be a family fun day in the country with loads of activities and entertainment for all. The Sunshine Coast Community Equestrian Centre at 2 Monak Road, North Arm will be filled with displays, activities, demonstrations, and spectacular arena shows, as well as music, entertainment, and formal and informal lectures on a range of rural topics. To kick off the celebrations, an Artistes' Exposé, an art competition with the theme "Living and Loving Life" will be part of the official opening on the Saturday afternoon. Also on display will be the Trail of Painted Ponies. More than 100 wooden horses are being decorated and painted by local school children, and these, along with all the art work will be displayed throughout the Sunday event. The outdoor dressage arena will be surrounded by a host of trade displays and the arena will be filled with a variety of demonstrations throughout Sunday, commencing at 8.30am. Lecture marquees will host discussions and information on everything from weed control to equine therapies. The Big Shed Indoor Arena is the venue for a variety of shows from the traditions of Light
The RoofTop Express Wild West Area Spectacular will be one of many highlights of the Sunshine Coast Mane Event at Caboolture in July.
Horse demonstrations, to local dressage "Butterflies", Western and English riding, horse training displays and demonstrations. The feature in the Big Shed Arena will be The RoofTop Express Wild West Arena Spectacular. This interactive animal stunt show is a must to see for all ages, with world first stunts, true blue Australian comedy and awe-inspiring horsemanship.
The Sunshine Coast Mane Event will showcase the volunteers, participants and horses at the Sunshine Coast Riding for the Disabled and will raise both awareness and funds for this very important and active community organisation. Through a team of dedicated volunteers, The Sunshine Coast RDA provides recreational and therapeutic equestrian activities for nearly 200 Sunshine Coast members. Saddle Up... Total Equine Qld Horse Expo is on Again!!!! The Total Equine Queensland Horse Expo is a highlight not to be missed at Toowoomba Showgrounds on Saturday and Sunday. September 23 and 24. The event attracts horse enthusiasts from the Darling Downs, wider Queensland and across Australia to inspect new products and services, gain information on horse health and education, benefit from the many equine disciplines on show and pick up a few bargains in the trade stalls. From Dressage to Western, Total Equine Queensland Horse Expo celebrates a wide variety of equestrian pursuits in a unique two-day event that aligns education and entertainment. Over the weekend, enjoy the very best of our Australian equine lifestyle with health and horsemanship presentations, breed displays and discipline demonstrations, the Trainer's Challenge, be entertained in the fantastic night show and browse through more than 100 different equine retailers. In 2016 the TEQ Trainer's Challenge was introduced which combines three trainers, three judges and one round yard in a challenge which puts three talented horse trainers against each other demonstrating their skills with young horses. The Trainers for the 2017 Trainer's Challenge are: FRED WATKINS Fred Watkins owns and runs Watkins Horse Handlers with his wife Rachel and has recently moved from Western Australia back to his home state of Queensland. Fred was born in Springsure, Queensland and grew up on a large cattle property. School holidays were spent mustering which involved working up young horses for the mustering team. Fred loved helping his father with this work and developed an interest for starting and educating young horses at a very early age. In 1999, Fred moved to Western Australia to work with his uncle, Bruce Watkins, a champion rodeo rider, well regarded breaker and race horse trainer. This gave Fred an opportunity to expand his skills and learn about working in other horse industries. While working for Bruce, Fred met his wife Rachel. Fred and Rachel moved to the beautiful Margaret River region in 2000 and started their business, Watkins Horse Handlers. The business was an immediate success and quickly built up a large and loyal clientele. While in Margaret River Fred became involved with the charity, The Outback Heritage Horse Association of WA (since closed) and began working with rescued wild horses. Fred's admiration for Australia's brumbies began here and he credits much of his horsemanship skills to the many wild horses he has since helped rescue, rehabilitate and train. In 2007, Fred and Rachel moved to Perth. Fred very quickly established himself as WA's most in demand horse trainer and also developed a reputation for being able to rehabilitate horses labelled as difficult or dangerous. In 2016, Fred and Rachel moved back to Qld and have now settled in Boonah in the South East. Having left behind over 5000 clients, Fred Page 32

Horses were an essential way to gather cattle and that's where Donal's interest in horses began. Much later he found himself riding bulls on the coastline of Qld which then led to a job in the Australian Outback Spectacular on the Gold Coast. Shortly after spending some time performing in this show Donal was taken on by "Double Dan Horsemanship" where he has been training and travelling throughout the USA and Canada furthering his horse skills. Just recently, Donal has established "Hancock Horsemanship" where he provides training and lessons for horses and people. Donal is excited to be participating in the TEQ Trainer's Challenge and is looking forward to sharing his knowledge with everyone at the expo. DANIEL ROBINSON Daniel Robinson heads a breaking in business in Sydney's west known as DPR Breaking with his fiancĂŠe Alexandra and
their small team. Daniel was born in Sha Tin, Hong Kong during his father's winning streak as champion jockey there but grew up in the famous racing town of Newmarket, England. From a very early age Daniel's life was submerged in horses and the racing industry. When old enough, Daniel also pursued a career as a jockey but it quickly became too difficult to meet the weight requirements, unfortunately he did not have his father's build. And so he continued to work with horses and soon became interested in educating the young ones and developing his skills as a horseman. He travelled around parts of Europe before heading to Australia to observe and partake in the different methods used for training horses here. Finding it very different to some of the more traditional English methods, Daniel was keen to learn to more and travelled to Murgon, Qld to learn from one of Australia's finest horsemen, Ian Francis. With the help of a great mentor and his naturally calm approach, Daniel continued to refine and shape his method for starting horses, and soon began training horses in Sydney. Now, Daniel breaks in for all disciplines, particularly racing and is known for his ability to turn even the most difficult horses into willing, relaxed partners. When Daniel isn't educating horses for Clients, he spends time training his stock horses Otis and Hazel (The way of the horse winner Roseridge Monroe) and hopes to free up some time to take them out to compete in the future. The event will be judged by three judges from Australia and overseas and will feature a long list of classes included but not limited to newcomer classes, rider classes, children's classes, owner/rider classes and thoroughbred classes. Each State will be running qualifer shows and the top three placegetters from each of the qualifying shows will be invited to compete at the event at the Sydney International Equestrian Centre. For Qld members to be eligible, competitors must be an EQ member at the time of qualification, either participant or competitor senior, depending on the event.
