Endurance festival draws quality field Toorbul, just 30 minutes north of Brisbane International Airport, is rapidly developing a reputation as a major venue for endurance riding. In April, a flat open paddock at Toorbul, was the venue for the HH Sheikh Majid bin Mohammed Al Maktoum Challenge which a attracted riders from five different states and five different countries. Competing through the state forest on tracks used for the first time for endurance horse riding, the Challenge generated plenty of atmosphere despite the rain. Teams travelled to the event from Tasmania, Victoria, South Australia. The two day program included international standard FEI 160km*** and FEI 120km** rides as well 80km* and AREA 40km and 20km intro fun rides with more than 150 riders competing. Flat open tracks with ample water allowed for riders to record lower riding times than many other rides. Great horsemanship and management was on display and on the Sunday, those horses presented for best condition for the 160km and 120km rides, looked fresh and ready to
compete again. This event however was only a preview for the major event happening on June 11 to 13 The Al Reef Stables Endurance Festival on that same flat paddock at Toorbul known by locals as the Farm Fantastic site. The festival will include a big screen on the back of the truck to cover the action and already 300 riders have nominated from 13 countries. Eleven separate rides will be conducted include two 20km intro fun rides that anyone can enter. Shaping up to be the largest endurance equestrian festival this year, it is one not to be missed by any horse owner or rider. The sight of riders competing will also provide plenty of action for spectators. Entry by the way is free.. There will be educational presentations, commentary on ride progress and the vet rings, an equestrian trade village for all your shopping needs and much more. It is not too late to be involved either via sponsorship, participating in the trade village or taking part in the action as a festival volunteer.

Understanding horse herbal medicine Understanding equine herbal medicine can be a challenge for many horse owners but not any longer thanks to Victoria Ferguson's new book The Complete Horse Herbal. The course will be taught personally by Victoria through a combination of distance learning and several blocks of practical sessions each year. There will also be short courses on Herbs for Horses, and the first one will be held at Scone TAFE on Saturday, July 23 and Sunday, July 24 July. There will be another one at Tocal Agricultural College, Paterson, NSW, in the latter half of the year, and plans are under way for some other weekend courses south of Sydney. Vets warn of Hendra virus season The Australian Veterinary Association is warning horse owners to take precautions against Hendra virus as the season for infections approaches. “There are still lots of gaps in our knowledge about how Hendra virus spreads, and we don’t know what effect the recent record wet weather will have,� said Dr Barry Smyth, President of the Australian Veterinary Association. “Anyone working with horses should be on the lookout and immediately report any suspected cases of Hendra virus infection over the coming months,� he said. Common signs to look out for include respiratory distress, frothy nasal discharge, elevated body temperature (above 40°C), and elevated heart rate. However, it is important to realise there are no specific signs of infection. “So far cases of Hendra infection have been restricted to Queensland and NSW but there is potential for the disease wherever there are flying foxes,� said
Scientist announces progress in horse vaccine development CSIRO scientists have shown that a new experimental vaccine helps to protect horses against the deadly Hendra virus. Dr Deborah Middleton (pictured) from CSIRO’s Australian Animal Health Laboratory (AAHL) will announce the successful progress to develop the vaccine at the Australian Veterinary Association conference in Adelaide today. “Our trials so far have shown that the vaccine prevents the infection of horses with Hendra virus,� Dr Middleton said. “Stopping the disease in horses could also help protect people from the disease. “A horse vaccine is crucial to breaking the cycle of Hendra virus transmission from flying foxes to horses and then to people, as it prevents both the horse

Sydney prepares to host an equine extravaganza The biggest equine show in the Southern Hemisphere is coming to Sydney in the form of Equitana in November. To be held at the Sydney Showgrounds from November 10 to 11, Equitana will be four days of everything equine featuring horses, Olympic gold medallists, world renowned educators, Aussie cowboys, an elite equine competition program and trade exhibitors. Warregold stud’s road to recovery Everyone is familiar with the iconic image of Warregold Cindy (the cover photo of the March April Horse Report edition) desperately swimming behind the State Emergency Service boat to safety, when floods engulfed Chinchilla late in 2010. That picture told a million words. The mare’s plight showed just how the flood s hit the Warregold Stock Horse Stud near Chinchilla and not once but twice. Now, five months on stud principals, Steve and Ursula Keating are now recovering from the worst of the floods with thanks to the equine community and its kind words and gestures of support. “Quite a lot of people offered us fodder relief and agistment paddocks even financial support,” Steve said. “We have been overwhelmed with appreciation for the kind offers from the equine community and although we could not take up any of the of generous offers, the consistent flow of email support and well wishes was enough to see us through.” The Warregold Stock Horse Stud principals are determined not to be beaten by the disaster and have winter crops sown and winter feed coming through. However, the floods did take their toll. Steve and Ursula were absolutely gutted when they lost one of their most coveted broodmares - Warrenbri Elegance (by

for feed and luckily there was some hay stored in the shed on high ground to feed the horses. The cattle eventually went on to agistment and lucerne was purchased until proper feed came through the organic debris and dead grass. Continued page 9

Fences were destroyed and there was water damage all over the property but with the help of neighbours and local earthmoving contractors, who were also affected, work was done to repair the damage. Many in Chinchilla have been affected the same way as Warregold Stock Horse Stud. Those in lower areas were far worse off houses and sheds destroyed as well as property infrastructure. However, as has been the case across Queensland, the community pulled together to help each other in any way they could. The equine community of Chinchilla are now planning a horse festival week for early 2012 which will feature races, rodeo, campdraft, polocrosse, cutting, horse sports, entertainment and a performance horse sale. Steve has been instrumental in the co-ordination of this event and hopes to see it become a biennial event (alternating with the Chinchilla Melon Festival) commemorating the unity out of the Chinchiila floods and the comradery of the equine community. Even though the Keating property, Coleridge was effectively wiped out, the stud still managed to present quality yearlings at sales earlier this year.

In fact a yearling filly, Warregold Fine Art (by Warrenbri Regal) offered for sale at the Toowoomba 'Select For The Future' ASH Broodmare and Yearling Sale won Champion Led Filly at the sale ASH Show. Steve and Ursula also donated services to Warrenbri Regal and Warregold Coolibah Spirit to the Horsezone Online Stallion Auction. Ursula is currently campaigning the stud's frontline stallion Warrenbri Regal on the
campdraft circuit and is turning heads with his exceptional conformation ability and temperament. “We are extremely proud of Regal,” Ursula . “He is that one in a million horse and we are also very impressed with the quality and calibre of his progeny, taking on all of his outstanding traits.” Warrenbri Regal will be standing at stud this year at Warregold Stock Horse Stud, 'Coleridge' Chinchilla. Makers Mark is a multi supreme Champion stallion who is breeding supreme champion progeny. Mark was top 10 Australian Champion under saddle. Vale Ramadan Arabian Hafiid The passing of Ramadan Arabian Hafiid (Sonny) has saddened all who knew and loved him. He was an Arabian legend. From the time he was born, Sonny showed amazing courage. His dam, Tristram Purette died when he was only a week old. He had to be hand raised and learn to drink out of a bucket. After a few years, it was clear that Sonny needed to be broken in and worked. He was bored and took to ripping the rugs off his own back and tossing his feed bin around his paddock so it became a daily hide and seek to find where he had flung it. Sonny displayed a natural instinct around cattle, and his ability to out run, out turn the mobs made him stand out at camp drafts. He had a strong, nuggety build with excellent bone, short back and feet like dinner plates. He won Australian Champion working stock horse twice and was once reserve. This record has not been beaten to date. He took out the jack pot barrel race a few times at the Australian Championships, clocking up great speeds. He always scored well in dressage, he had lovely paces. Sonny was always a gentleman in a saddle class line up and never put a foot wrong in a work out. Sonny was awarded five Elwyn Bligh buckles and was named stallion of the year on two occasions and appeared on the on the front cover of Arabian Studs and Stallions Sonnyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s legacy lives on in his most successful offspring is The Real McCoy, (Macca) Australian Champion Arabian Stock Horse, led and ridden. Macca is still winning in the show ring and was 2011 Challenge Champion Arabian Stock horse. Macca was successful in the reining arena with John Wicks who started him under saddle. You have left us Sonny, but we will never forget you.

You may be left holding the baby By KAREN HODGES Sometime things don't go as they should and sometimes the breeder is left "holding the baby". It is not common but some mares will reject their new foal. The mare may die during or after the delivery, but whatever the reason for the foal being left without a mother, it needs love and nurturing. That first drink is essential for the foal's life. If the mare has died before the foal has had its first drink of colostrum, then milk the mare out. Milk out as much as possible but an a couple of litres is enough. Transfer the colostrum to a bottle and encourage the foal to drink. Colostrum contains antibodies that the foal will need in the first few days of its life to survive. Most breeders know the value of this first drink and if a mare delivers a dead foal it is advisable to milk her out and freeze the colostrum, you never know, it might save another foals life. Some studs have a litre in the freezer for such emergencies. When administering the colostrum, don't stretch the foals head up, try and keep the bottle and the foals head at about a parallel level. If the foals head is too high then it is likely to aspirate, that is milk will run down into the foals lungs and it will develop pneumonia and that can be fatal. In the situation where the mare has rejected
the foal, the mare still has to be milked out. She may require twitching and restraint to be able to do this safely. The attending vet may sedate her as well. It is a good idea to remove the foal from the mare's presence if she has started to show signs of aggression towards the foal. Some mares, especially with a first foal, might be so overwhelmed by their new offspring that she just wants to keep looking at it and every time the foal attempts to suck the mare moves around so she can see her new foal. In this situation, just hold the mare and once the foal has had a good drink, her udder should have softened a little and she will feel more relaxed about the foal being under her. The mare might squeal when the foal first starts to suck, this indicates the mare is suffering a little discomfort with a very tight udder but after the milk has been released it will be more pleasant for her. When it is clear that you are now the sole parent of this little bundle of joy, you must have a warm clean stable for the both of you for the next 24 hours. There are several milk products on the market that can be purchased from most good produce stores . Di-Vetelact low lactose animal supplement is an excellent one to use. The powdered milk solutions are usually mixed with warm
water in a clean bucket and starting off with a few litres every two hours it is important the milk is mixed fresh every feed. In a few weeks, the foal's needs will grow to several litres per feed. I don't recommend you keep the foal on a bottle for more than 24hrs, introduce the bucket of milk to the foal. By putting your fingers in the milk and letting the foal suck for a minute it will soon get the idea how to drink milk without a bottle. The foal will attach to you very quickly and not want you out of their sight. From personal experience, getting the foal a horse friend is essential. I had a yearling filly that bonded very quickly to the orphan I raised, having a friend meant I could have a couple of hours between feeds to do other things, the foal always galloped over at feed time and sucked every drop of milk offered to her. Within a couple of months the foal will be eating "real" food and you can start cutting the milk supplement down. Don't cut it right out until at least four to five months of age. Equine splints - The causes and cures By DAVID LOVELL BVSc Redlands Veterinary Clinic Your two and a half-year-old horse has been in training for a few months but even though you're taking it slowly and steadily and not pushing too hard, he sometimes comes up lame during or after a workout. The lameness isn't always present and rarely occurs at a walk, but it does show up when he trots and canters. During the vet exam, your horse flinched when his leg was touched. Your veterinarian suggested radiographs, suspecting the splint area is the problem. ‘Splints’ occur primarily in growing horses involved in heavy training. Splint bones are located on each side of the cannon bone. Between the splint bones and the cannon bone is the interosseous ligament, which is made of a dense connective tissue that ossifies into bone as the horse grows into adulthood. Splints are caused by injury or tearing of the interosseous ligament, usually because of a conformational predisposition, or by direct trauma to the periosteum of the splint bones or adjacent bones. (The periosteum is the soft tissue covering bone.) Splints are initially soft tissue swellings which progress to bony swellings. Splints can originate from tearing of the interosseous ligament, external trauma to the bone, or secondary to healing of a fracture. Splints commonly occur in two to three-year-old horses, occasionally in horses four years of age and older and are usually associated with training and subsequent injury. Splints usually occur in the inside forelimb splint, about three inches (75mm) below the knee, although they can occur in the outside splint of the front or rear legs. Four Types of Splints: (1) True Splint - is a fibrous and bony enlargement at the interosseous space secondary to tearing of the interosseous ligament (2) Blind Splint - The inflammation this causes results in a fibrous and bony enlargement between the splint bone and the suspensory ligament. Usually there are no visible external signs. Page 14
(3) Periosteal Splint - This inflammation and bony reaction is secondary to trauma or a knock to the soft tissue covering the bone. Can be on the cannon bone or splint and there may be a fracture (4) Knee Splint - This splint is almost always conformational and results in inflammation and swelling in the uppermost part of the inside splint bone and involves the knee The primary contributor to splints is training. Two-year-old horses in heavy training have an increased frequency of splints. Other potential causes include conformational abnormalities such as offset knees, base narrow (feet close together), toe-out conformation; improper hoof balance; mineral imbalances; and over-nutrition. Conformation and improper hoof balance can also lead to interference and superficial trauma and periostitis. Working on hard ground can increase the risk of splints. Racing horses may develop fractures to the distal splint bone due to tension from the suspensory ligaments. Reining and cutting horses can be at greater risk, due to their quick movements and direction changes increasing the potential for inadvertent gait interference between limbs. Signs and Diagnosis Heat, pain, and swelling along a splint bone in a two to four-yearold horse suggests a splint. The swelling may be painful to palpation initially, but as the inflammation subsides, the swelling becomes firm and nonpainful. Lameness is usually mild and most evident at the trot. Exercise on hard ground will accentuate the lameness. In mild cases no lameness may be evident at the walk. Lameness might come and go or be continuous Radiographs are recommended to confirm the diagnosis, to rule out a splint bone fracture, and to document the size and amount of bony proliferation of the swelling. This establishes a baseline for monitoring for further bony reaction, predicts the degree of permanent cosmetic blemish (bony swelling), and helps determine the healing and prognosis for when to return to work. Occasionally, local infiltration of the area with local anaesthetic

may be needed to confirm the origin of lameness, particularly with a blind splint. Treatment There are various means of addressing splints, but rest is mandatory and is the most appropriate therapy.
Veterinarians and horse owners might also utilize additional treatments adjunctive to rest. The goal of conservative therapy is to eliminate the swelling or minimize its size, although often a small cosmetic blemish (bony swelling) remains. Conservative management, includes rest until the splint is no longer painful to palpation (usually six weeks, but it can range from two weeks to three months); topical cold therapy with icing in the early stages and then support bandaging to reduce swelling. Oral non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, (phenylbutazone), to reduce inflammation; and topical anti-inflammatory drugs such as DMSO or cortisone or local injections of corticosteroids may decrease inflammation and reduce the size of bony swelling. Anti-inflammatory agents are primarily indicated for the acute phase, whereas intralesional injections of steroids may be used in the subacute case to further decrease inflammation and reduce swelling. Starting your horse on lateral exercises By JOHN DOWNES In the last article I talked about the basics of dressage be it in relation to a dressage test or a show jumping round. These basics included accuracy, clarity of transitions and rhythm within the paces. We also mentioned the training scale and the use of set exercises to achieve desired results. Now let's start talking about the individual exercises or movements that you will find not only in the current EA (Equestrian Australia) test book but what you will need to advance you and your horse's education. Looking through the current EA test book is an education not only in the training the scale but also when the individual exercises should be introduced and the
sequence of their introduction. The current test exercises are ridden in a set sequence so as to encourage the horse and rider to the next level and subsequently consolidate the improvements that have been made. Over facing a horse with an exercise that is too difficult be it a half pass or an oxer that is to wide or tall will not only destroy the trust we are trying to build but can lead to irreparable damage to the paces. The other point to keep in mind with the introduction of the exercises is that if the exercise is too difficult the horse will resist so as to make the task easier for itself. This resistance may be very obvious or less so, for example irregularity or just not engaging the inside hind leg.

In the previous articles I have mentioned the exercises are only tools to improve the horse's paces, so a tool that does not work should not be used. When the basics are established we are ready to move on to the individual exercise. Generally the first exercise I introduce is turn on the forehand and although not found in the current EA tests it is a fine training tool. It introduces the horse and rider to the concept of inside leg and outside rein for the first time and as such is the precursor exercise to leg yield which is found in the Novice level tests. If a solid fence or wall is available it makes the introduction of this exercise far easier. The horse is placed parallel to the wall in halt and flexed and bent slightly towards the wall with the riders leg and hand. The direction the horse is being flexed towards is called the inside, and flexion refers to the top two vertebrae of the horse's neck the axis and atlas vertebrae. The flexion is done with the inside hand. The rider should move his/her inside leg back (this is the leg closest to the wall) and ask the horse to move away from the wall with the hind legs, whilst maintaining the bend and flexion. The front legs should stay in place but ideally mark time with the hind leg foot falls. However in the initial training of the exercise the horse will often ground the front legs and at this point it is not an issue. Once the horse is facing in the opposite direction from which we started and maintaining a halt the exercise is completed. Not only is this a great exercise to start the lateral work it but it also has a few other advantages. - It is great precursor exercise to the leg yield - Another way to change rein - If executed correctly it acts as a proof stone of our training - Introduces the concept of inside leg and outside rein to horse and
rider Points to be aware of: - At this point in the training of the horse the exercise is always started and finished with a halt - Stay next to a solid fence in the initial training but once the exercise can be executed with ease try moving away from the wall - Later on the exercise can be done in walk, this is called turn about the forehand rather than turn on the forehand - If the horse walks backwards you are using too much hand - If he walks forward he is going through the bridle and you will need to block more with both hands - The hind legs should cross - If he ignores your leg try a more forceful application of the leg aid. (The whip may be necessary) - It often helps to train the exercise in hand and then under saddle. - Only a very slight bend and flexion is necessary. If excessive bend and flexion is applied the horse will go through the outside shoulder and end up walking along the wall rather than executing the turn on the forehand - Inside and outside refers to the direction the horse is flexed and bent not the direction of travel or where you are in the arena As I mentioned earlier in this article this is a great exercise to introduce the concept of inside leg and outside rein to both horse and rider so it should never be discounted as being too easy or unnecessary in the initial training From here the education will move forward to the leg yield which when executed correctly will result in the horse carrying himself on the bit. Remember that the roundness of the horse should be a result of engagement of the inside hind leg and this exercise is the foundation of this concept. California in May 2009. She completed her three month internship at Flag Is Up in March 2010 and was awarded her instructors certificate. Besides having gained her instructors license with Monty Roberts, Lynn has spent time learning with other trainers and instructors in the equine industry. Most recently, she spent time with Rob Horne, one of Sydney's most respected horsemen with over 40 years experience in breaking and training horses professionally. Rob is also a Monty Roberts Instructor. School of Equus is located in Glenburn, Victoria. Lynn holds courses at her property and also travels around the country to ensure Monty's method of horse training can be shared with as many people as possible. DOWNS YOUTH & AMATEUR SHOW 2011 The Downs Arabian Club Inc is proud to announce the fifth running of the Youth and Amateur Show (YouAm11) on Saturday, July 30 at the Laidley Showgrounds. The show this year will commence at 7.30am and will be hosted by many of Australia's leading professional handlers and trainers from the Arabian show scene. Last year's show was fun-filled and action packed with spectators, competitors and volunteers enjoying themselves so much that all have vowed to return for this year's show and we hope to see many new faces there as well. The day will include Hi-Point Awards, encouragement awards, novelty events as well as a wide variety of led and ridden classes for both purebred and derivative Arabians. This year the club is introducing Newbie classes, for riders and handlers who have never shown a horse before or are in their first year of showing. Newbie classes are open to all breeds of horses and are a great opportunity for newcomers to gain experience. The Downs Arabian Club is a dynamic club intent of promoting the Arabian breed across the Darling Downs and South East Queensland. MUDGEERABA SHOW Here it comes again for the 82nd time - the Mudgeeraba Show will be held on June 25 and 26. What a great line up of fun and excitement, with two stages of all day entertainment, roving acts, pavilions, woodchop and dog and duck show. The Tweed Valley Equestrian Group will be holding the annual Cliff Cartwright Memorial Hack Show on Sunday, July 10 at the Murwillumbah Showgrounds. In the main arena, pony, galloway, hack, rings will include breed, led, ridden and rider classes. Prizes, sashes and /or trophies will be awarded to champions, and sashes for reserve champion winners as well as rugs and garlands for the supreme led, supreme hack and supreme rider The beginner ring will have 28 classes, leadline / assisted or independent riders. There will be highly commended and runner up prizes awarded to both categories This year TVEG introduce the inaugural Baroque Ring with led, ridden and costume classes for both purebred and partbred Andalusian, Iberian, Lusitano, Friesian and Lipizzaner horses. What’s Happening NORTHERN RIVERS ARABIAN SHOW Northern Rivers Arabian Horse Association Inc will hold the A Class Arabian ‘Premier Show’ at Murwillumbah Showgrounds on October 8 and 9. There are many prizes, trophies and sashes to be won over the weekend. This year will see highly respected Australian judges Janette Crutchfield (Vic) and Angela Kovac (NSW) officiate at the event. The very popular Premier Cup events will again be held in both the purebred and derivative rings, where the horses are judged as led hacks as well as under saddle. The top five will be sashed, with the winners also receiving a trophy. A jam-packed program for Purebreds and Derivatives – at the prettiest showground in NSW. EA YOUNG RIDERS SCHOOL Show Horse Queensland will be holding a young riders school on Monday, June 13 at the Park Ridge Pony Club Grounds starting at 8am. The guest instructor for this year will be Mark Kenzig an outstanding show horse competitor with many years of experience in the show ring with recent wins including champion small hack and galloway at the Northern NSW Hack Championships and Champion Large Hack at EA Nationals. Mark is a SHC listed Royal Judge, EFA National Judge and an EFA NCAS Coach. Cost of the clinic is $60 which includes two group lessons and one lecture on ringcraft. Championships put ‘youngsters’ to the test Dressage in Queensland will be breaking new ground when the Saddleworld Queensland Young Dressage Horse and Pony State Championships 2011 are held at the indoor arena at Gatton next month. Conducted by Dressage Queensland, it will be the first time the two day championships have been held indoors, a move which event director Karen Crommelin believes will benefit both competitors and spectators. "Building on the success of previous championships, we want to raise the profile of the young horse classes in Dressage and by holding this year's event at Gatton, we will have access to better facilities, stabling and we won't be hostage to the weather," Karen said. "Another of the appeals of Gatton as a venue was that it is centrally located to many studs and breeders in South East Queensland. "It will be the first time the event has been held over two days. The Saturday features the first round of the four, five and six-yearold young Dressage horse and pony classes which are called tests run with two horses in the arena at once. "This will help spectators understand and appreciate what the horse and rider must perform. On the second day, the top 10 place getters in each age group will perform an individual test." Competitors following national Dressage competition tests. The tests are designed to progress with an increased degree of difficulty as the horse's

level of training progresses. "The standard for the six-year-old horse is equivalent to a medium level test requiring flying changes and trot half pass," Karen said. She said the championships would attract many owner riders and professional riders as well as draw interest from many breeders

The event has attracted support from major sponsors Saddleworld together with age group sponsors Remi Stud, Pryde's Horse Feeds and Lexington Farm. The pony classes have also been sponsored by Barnhill Pony Stud. This has allowed for generous prize money to be offered. One of the features of the championships this year was the introduction of the State Of Origin prize, donated by Max and Robyn Woodward from Equivet Australia, for the highest scoring Queensland born horse in each age group. "The prize is aimed at encouraging Queensland breeders to develop Dressage bloodlines and for riders to compete on Queensland horses," she said. Karen said there would be many quality horses performing at Gatton and was hopeful that the championships could develop interest not only within the equestrian community but among the general public. "These championships are free to attend. We will have catering and there will be some trade displays as well," she said. The 2011 Saddleworld Queensland Young Dressage Horse and Pony State Championships will be held on July 23 and 24 at the indoor arena at the Gatton Showgrounds. Kyogle Pony Club celebrates 50 years 50 Years of Kyogle Pony Club----- Celebrations…… On June 23, 1961, a meeting formed the Kyogle Pony Club. Some of the original families who were there at the formation of the club were the Halls, Mastersons, Feltons, Triheys, Herds and Lehmans. The first club uniform was brown caps, fawn jodhpurs, brown tie, light green shirt and brown jumpers. The club’s first gymkhana was held on December 2, 1961. The club is about to hold their 50th anniversary gymkhana on June 11 and 12 at the Kyogle Showgrounds. This will consist of two full days of pony club competitions involving all the present riders of the club and the members of other clubs within

Surgery is often requested. Certainly in cases of fracture it is often very useful but surgery just to remove a bony lump often results in a return of an even bigger lump so cases need to be selected very carefully Shock wave therapy is one newer treatment that can give spectacular results once the acute phase has settled down.
Cases need to be carefully selected, and it is expensive, but results can make it well worth while Counter-irritation (pin firing, cryotherapy with liquid nitrogen, and blistering, for example) used to be a common practice but knowledge now suggests that this type of approach rarely gives any results. The idea with counter-irritation
is supposedly to change a chronic condition into an acute condition, thus increasing blood flow to the area and improving healing. Shock wave treatment is a far better alternative. Patience with splints is a major factor. The bony callus that forms is nature's way of healing the damage and stabilising the
splint. Once that happens, the splint is very unlikely to be a problem in the future. The lump and blemish are the major issues, and if proper rest is given to minimise the damage, natural wound contraction over time will result in disappearance of most of the fibrous swelling that is present and the splint will be far less obvious.
