MAKE ART— and MAKE MONEY BY BILL O’NEILL Visit the American art meccas: New York, Los Angeles, Cotuit. OK, so Cotuit, a sleepy village on Cape Cod, isn’t quite up there with the Big Apple and LA, but it is home to a bustling community arts center. It serves as proof that you don’t need to be a Broadway singer or a movie star to make a living in the arts. “If you can find employment in the field you love, you’ll have no idea where it can take you,” says David Kuehn, executive director of the Cotuit Center for the Arts. The center offers theater, music and art programs and classes for people in the surrounding towns. Kuehn majored in classical piano performance at the University of California, Los Angeles. “I had the ‘least likely to get a job’ degree of anyone I knew,” he jokes. But people he met while working as a clerk at Tower Records in LA helped him get a foot in the door in the music industry. He worked his way up to a post in New York City as vice president of marketing for BMG Classics. “I had an accidental career, from contacts I had working at a record store,” he says. “But it shows that there’s a way to be connected to your passion. What you do along the way and how you develop your contacts can help you build a career.” Photo: Jules Massenet's Cendrillon opera, UMKC Conservatory of Music and Dance, Kansas City, MO.

IT’S NOT JUST ABOUT ACTING

Despite the myth of the starving artist, a report on payscale.com shows that there are jobs for people with degrees in studio art, graphic design and film studies. Median salaries are $111,500 for senior fashion designers, $92,000 for design managers, $75,500 for senior web designers and $65,100 for video producers. Animation, arts education and arts administration are other career tracks with plenty of job openings, according to worldwidelearn.com. And just look at the credits list for a movie: Actors are only a small portion of the crew. Enrollment in some arts programs is down because of concerns about job prospects, says Charlie Oates, an instructor in the theater and dance program at the University of California, San Diego. “Everyone wants to go into business or engineering, but that’s unfortunate,” he says. “People are underestimating the value of arts and the humanities.” Oates, a movement teacher in the UCSD acting program, says arts majors develop skills that are required in any profession, including problem solving, collaboration and time management. “We have graduates who go into law school and some who go to work for Disney doing stage management or Pixar doing animation,” he says. HOW’S YOUR INNER DRIVE?

Scott Nash, an assistant professor and founder of the illustration department at the Maine College of Art in Portland, says some of his former students have found solid careers in digital illustration. One is an illustrator who launched a clothing line. Nash, himself, is a founding partner of the design studios Nashbox and Big Blue Dot and the illustrator of more than 40 children’s books. No matter what arts majors want to do after school, Nash says it’s important that they have a strong basis in science, literature and history. “You need to be connected to the world,” he says. He recommends that students look at arts colleges with strong liberal arts programs or a liberal arts college with a strong arts program.

“If you have good liberal arts training, you can interject yourself into any situation,” he says. “Any employer needs people who can think, people who feel comfortable brainstorming and have the drive to follow through and flesh out new ideas.” Opportunities are there, but the bar is high, he says. “You don’t need to have a huge amount of talent, but you need to have discipline, an understanding of the world and your own style.” Kuehn, who’s helped expand arts involvement in his Massachusetts community, says a successful career in the arts depends upon inner drive. “We live in an instant-gratification society, but you have to pay your dues,” he says. “Don’t set the bar too low. Go for your dreams. Try not to compromise, but realize that it takes years of hard work.”

LOVE THE ARTS– LOVE STEM BY BILL O’NEILL

s a teenager, Kimberly Moss spent hours at the Bell Museum of Natural History on the University of Minnesota campus, using nature dioramas as inspiration for drawings. She loved science classes as much as her art classes and wondered how she someday would choose between the two. It turns out she didn’t have to. When she was a sophomore in high school, the museum’s curator introduced her to medical illustration. That helped to set her on her path to her job: assistant professor in the Department of Art and Visual Culture and coordinator of the biological pre-medical illustration program at Iowa State University. “I got acquainted with combining science and art early on,” she says. “It was a relief that I didn’t have to choose between science and art.” ISU’s pre-med illustration program is just one example of a major that combines STEM (science,

technology, engineering and mathematics) with art and can lead to a great career. Dr. Edna Grover-Bisker, director of career opportunities and employer relations at Missouri University of Science and Technology (MUST), lists several other careers that blend the two: • Architecture combines engineering and art. • Animation blurs the lines between technology and art. • User-interface design is about how things look and how we use them. • Art conservation uses chemical and biological sciences to preserve treasures. Other possibilities include sound engineering, digital lighting and virtual reality. Even though MUST is a STEM school, it doesn’t discount art. “Eighty percent of our students seek degrees in engineering, but a lot of them are artists, actors or

10 | 2015 TEENLIFE GUIDE TO PERFORMING & VISUAL ARTS COLLEGES

writers,” says Grover-Bisker. “You can design a bridge, or you can design a beautiful bridge. You can design a car, or you can design a car that’s a piece of art.” Combining science and art goes back through the ages and has continued through some of our most recent innovators. “Our culture has drawn an artificial line between art and science, one that did not exist for innovators like Leonardo da Vinci and Steve Jobs,” Dr. Loretta Jackson-Hayes, an associate professor of chemistry at Rhodes College in Memphis, Tenn., wrote in a recent commentary in the Washington Post. Jackson-Hayes uses the example that Leonardo’s study of anatomy helped inform his art. And she quotes Jobs: “It’s in Apple’s DNA that technology alone is not enough. It’s technology married with liberal arts, married with the

humanities, that yields us the result that makes our heart sing.” ISU’s Moss says her students love art and studio classes as much as they love biology coursework and other science classes. “It’s a combination of left brain/right brain thinking,” she says. Recent ISU graduates have gone into medical illustration, construction of prosthetic devices, virtual reality, medical law illustration, and even pharmaceutical sales, using anatomical animation to market drugs. Grover-Bisker says combining studies in STEM and art makes graduates more marketable. “My advice for parents and kids is to do a nice blend,” she says. “Artists have to be able to make things that are functional, and scientists have to be able to communicate. They bolster each other.”

Find & Pursue Your Passions www.iwu.edu/admissions

A Passionate Process:

FINDING YOUR FIT BY LAURA LAMERE xperts agree: It’s important to pursue your passion in college. But for your performing or visual arts experience to be successful, you’ll have to look beyond your passion and take into account how you “fit” with the institutions you’re considering. “Fit” is that hard-to-describe, hard-to-measure mix of passion, personality and place that tells you, “I’ve found the right place for me.” Ultimately, getting to know the school is getting to know if you can see yourself there. How do you research “fit”? Dig in and explore every aspect of every school, and don’t underestimate the importance of visiting in person. Here are tips from our experts: 1. Understand the differences in arts degrees and courses of study. For example, do you want an intense conservatory program or a strong music program in the environment of a liberal arts college or university setting? 2. Start your research and application process as early as 18 months before deadline. As an arts student, you will be working with earlier deadlines and additional requirements. Carefully track everything, including prescreening, auditions, videos, essays, recommendations and entrance exams. 3. Test yourself. “Summer programs are a great way to get a taste of the college experience in your arts area,” says Barbara

Weidlein, founder of MajoringInMusic.com, a clearinghouse site for making decisions about music programs. “You’ll see how many hours a day you can comfortably live and breathe your passion.” 4. Take a trial lesson from an instructor at a college you are considering. You’ll learn about the faculty’s personality and teaching style, and they’ll get to know you. “The schools are prepared for students to ask for lessons,” Weidlein says. “Many charge, but some don’t. Schools love to create relationships and get to know who’s coming up the pipeline.” William Zuckerman, consultant with Music School Central, a music school advising service, agrees. “Schools keep tabs on visits,” he says. “Remember, they want to be wanted. If you visit and meet representatives of schools, it could be beneficial for you.” 5. Location, location, location. “Early on in your process, think about where schools are located to see if the region matches with your future career aspirations,” says Zuckerman. “Music education majors should think ahead about state requirements for certification, while performing-arts majors should consider access to arts-rich cultural areas.” 6. Research performance opportunities. At a major conservatory, there are hundreds of performance opportunities, but when it comes to liberal arts colleges or universities, you need to look deeper to see the opportunities. (Continued on Page 14)

8.

Don’t be dazzled by names. No matter what you plan to study or where you choose to study, remember the “fit” is more important than the name. “To be successful, an artist doesn’t have to go to one of the top schools,” explains Sarah Lovely, director of college counseling at Walnut Hill School for the Arts in Natick, Mass. “We really encourage our students to diversify their lists.” Zuckerman agrees. “Juilliard is known for its piano program, but how many students do they accept each year? Three? Maybe four?” Visit the schools where you have been accepted. This is a must, according to Zuckerman. “You need to see what feels right. If it doesn’t feel right, nothing else matters. I really looked into all of my options. At the University of Michigan, I made

friends outside of the music school, and that was good for me personally. … At the end of the day, it felt right to me.”

AND HOW CAN PARENTS HELP?

“Parents can start by listening and supporting where the child is,” says Weidlein. “I know parents worry, but instead of worrying, they should look at what their child’s passion is all about and trust that they’ll land on their feet.” And even non-arts majors don’t have job guarantees, she says. Kirsten Marella, mother of Lizzy Marella, a music student at Interlochen Arts Academy in Michigan, understands her daughter’s passion. “When Lizzy is passionate and creative, she is firing on all circuits – it’s such a magical thing. You have to support that.”

Laura Lamere, LauraLamere.com, is the founder of Pavoh.org, a nonprofit organization that helps youth find their voice through music and performance.

ARTS DEGEE

BY MARY STEGMEIR

degree in the arts offers endless possibilities. Not only will it help take your skills to the next level, you’ll have the opportunity to surround yourself with other artists and learn how to make a living doing what you love.

Follow these four steps as you navigate the application process: 1. Get feedback. Whether you’re a concert pianist or an aspiring filmmaker, your talents and accomplishments will help determine your admission chances. Figure out where you stand by seeking out an objective assessment of your abilities. Start by asking a trusted teacher or mentor to describe your strengths and weaknesses. You may also consider getting an outside opinion from professionals with a local symphony, dance troupe or theater company. Visual artists can receive portfolio evaluations from college representatives at one of the many National Portfolio Day events offered across the nation. (Visit portfolioday.net for details.) An honest appraisal will help you select the type of school and degree path best suited to your abilities and career goals.

2. Scope out your options. Conservatories, stand-alone arts schools and traditional universities all offer programs for performing and visual arts students. Take time to learn about each option as well as the different degree pathways they provide. Conservatories and art schools offer students the chance to immerse themselves in the arts. At these highly competitive institutions, all students are artists, and degrees typically include a bachelor of fine arts (BFA) for artists/ performers or a bachelor of music (BM) for musicians. Both degrees, also routinely available at larger universities, require rigorous study and practice. Looking for a more traditional college experience? At many universities, students can major in disciplines such as dance, music or the theater arts to meet the requirements of a bachelor of arts (BA) degree. In addition to arts courses, students take liberal arts classes and have the opportunity to double-major or minor in another area of interest, such as history or Spanish. 3. Showcase your talents. A student’s portfolio or audition lies at the heart of their application.

16 | 2015 TEENLIFE GUIDE TO PERFORMING & VISUAL ARTS COLLEGES

Do yourself a favor: Carefully research what each institution requires, and leave yourself plenty of time to prepare. Visual artists who created portfolios stress that only their best work — the pieces they believed illustrated their technical skills and vision as an artist — were included. Give yourself time to create, and choose a range of recent work. Getting ready for a musical, theater or dance audition is equally intense. Focus on perfecting your performance. If you’re going to audition in front of a panel, enlist a friend or teacher to help you prepare for “surprise” elements. Musicians or vocalists are often asked to sight-read a piece of music as part of their audition. Dancers sometimes attend an

open class prior to their solo. Theater students should be prepared to improvise on stage. 4. Polish your resume. Although your creative talent is a critical part of the admission process, grades and test scores still matter. Make sure your academic record is as strong as possible going into your senior year, and be sure to note arts-related achievements on your resume. You should also be prepared to answer questions about your artistic process. Many schools require applicants to write essays or to sit for interviews. Discussing, in an open, honest manner, what your art means to you can help show school officials what makes you unique.

As I sit in my apartment in sunny Los Angeles, I have just finished my fourth day of rehearsals for a Princess Cruise Lines show written by Stephen Schwartz, creator of the music for “Godspell,” “Pippin” and “Wicked,” among others. It’s a job that I never dreamed of getting four short years ago. My bright future is owed to my college experience at Oklahoma City University, and I am quite certain that nothing I write could fully express how passionately I believe this. Four years ago, I was a senior in high school, 17 years old, embarking on the journey that is choosing a college. Many of my peers were anxious about choosing where to go and what to study. For me, knowing what to study had never been a question. From the time I was very little, I was madly in love with dancing and had never once questioned pursuing anything else. I stumbled upon Oklahoma City University by accident. I had completed most of my college applications already, certain that the search was over and ready to commit to being a dance major at another university. But I flipped through Dance Spirit magazine one afternoon and found an article on the dance program at OCU. The more I read, the more

Nothing could have prepared me for the transformation I would make through the Ann Lacy School. Personalized attention from my faculty and staff gave me the confidence, freedom and determination to grow as a dancer. The wide array of classes that I took taught me everything I would need to know about navigating the entertainment industry as a professional. Not only was I expected to challenge myself as an artist on a daily basis, but I was also held to a high professional and ethical standard. I was expected to be on time, look presentable, ask questions, be curious, improve, struggle and grow. I was taught what to put on my resume, what my headshot should look like, how to sign my first contract, how to start a nonprofit arts organization, how to present myself at an audition, how to network, how to produce, how to find a sublet in NYC — you get the point. Pursuing the arts in college, while very rewarding, was also a challenge. It was not a “typical” college experience, nor was it an easy degree to earn, but I wouldn’t trade it for anything. I got to indulge in what I loved every day, and now I have the tools I need to do it for the rest of my life (and make money doing it — what?!). To me, this is invaluable and means so much more than just a diploma. Because of my education at OCU, I am confident, determined, prepared, capable and professional. But most importantly, I am making my dreams a reality.

In fact, looking back, it was all like a microcosm of . . . well, I don’t want to be cliche and say “life,” but it was definitely a test run for something. Take having a roommate, for example.

In Their Own Words By ELIZABETH ALLEN

Minneapolis College of Art and Design For most teenagers, summer exists as a double-edged sword. The first few days are a struggle to do as little as possible, while doing just enough to look like you aren’t growing roots. Parents love for us to have summer jobs, and to attend summer camps and summer schools—yet the idea of squandering away three months of leisure with backbreaking mental labor seemed to me to undermine the very concept of a summer break. However, when I discovered the Minneapolis College of Art and Design’s pre-college summer session, I was proven wrong. There, a three-week educational summer program (offering three transferable college credits!) balanced fun with functionality. There, on the schedule, mixed with challenging, thought-provoking coursework, were outings, movie nights, and the promise that beautiful, cultural Minneapolis would stand like an open door before us all. It was a nobrainer to apply, and the program had amazing financial assistance. Sure, this would be the first time I’d ever be away from my family for so long, but it was only three weeks, and real college would be for much longer. It would be like a test run.

I met my roommate the very first hour of the very first day, just as my family and I were dropping off my metric ton of luggage in the student apartment we’d be sharing. Abigail, my roommate and future BFF, was already inside picking out her bed. It was oddly intimate. We knew we’d be sleeping in the same room that night, yet we knew nothing about each other. It could have been uncomfortable, but really, it was as easy as squealing “Roomie!!!” at the top of my lungs and bounding in for a cheery introduction. Making myself just a little vulnerable went a long way in terms of both our comfort levels. And even though the other students were amazing, the actual school part of the summer session managed to be even better. My teachers and their assistants were the best people I have ever met. My comic-art teacher thrilled me with his critique that was straight to the point and brutal. All my teachers gave me the responsibility of being an adult when dealing with assignments. But by far, my very favorites were the teacher’s assistants. They were living, breathing examples of how good life could be if I followed my dreams and pursued them with purpose. They had been where I was and were full of glittering promise that everything would turn out just fine; that I would go to school and become fantastic, and find a job, and succeed. In the end, that’s what the program taught me: that success was possible if only you tried your hardest. And that it could be pretty fun, too.

In Their Own Words By DAVID FOY BAUER

Minneapolis College of Art and Design Looking for drama schools in Hollywood is like dumpster diving for gold. It’s hard to find a program that puts you, the student, first. However, having just graduated, I can say that Theatre of Arts does just that. The two-year conservatory program provides students with training in every aspect of acting, including, most importantly, the business side. Most schools here in Los Angeles have huge classes of 15 or more. This results in little time on stage or one-on-one with teachers, which is key for growth as an actor. In my class, we had, at most, six people, meaning we became close to each other and to our teachers and got to spend lots of time up on stage. The school has a beautiful theater on campus that students get all to themselves during classes and rehearsals. In the evening, it is used as an indie film cinema – and students get free tickets! All the teachers at the school have to be working in their fields. It’s cool to be watching your favorite show and see a familiar face or two. Casting directors, for example, teach the business classes, and stunt coordi-

nators teach stage combat. And guest speakers visit frequently. This means that, from day one as a student, you are immersed within the Hollywood industry and have countless opportunities to make connections. And in the acting and the filmmaking industry, connections are the No. 1 thing that will get you work. I took classes in various acting techniques, makeup, stage combat, musical theater, voice, movement and dance, to name a few, and then had the opportunity to put all of this into action. We wrote and performed our own one-person shows, did a festival of one-act plays, and got to present a fulllength play for the public. At graduation, we put on a showcase of scenes and monologues that industry professionals attended. Many of us booked meetings afterward. Again, I owe this to the connections of faculty members. So, why choose Theatre of Arts?

• The tuition is priced fairly. • Teachers are all trained as actors and are

now successfully doing what you want to do. Go figure. • You will leave school equipped with a professional showreel, resume and the ability to write resumes and pick great headshots. • Classes with teachers who care about you. • Equal training in both theater and on-camera. You’ll leave knowing the difference between the two and be a more versatile actor for it. You get the picture. If you want to be a professional actor and give yourself the best shot possible for success, then Theatre of Arts is the place to start that journey. They also offer great short summer programs, if you want to try it out without the two-year commitment.

Parents:

BREATHE DEEP & SHARE THE DREAM BY DOREEN SPICER DEAR PARENTS OF A HOLLYWOOD DREAMER: Have no fear, your aspiring-artist student will survive in the real world. Quite often parents of aspiring artists face daunting questions: How is my kid going to make a living being an artist? Will I have to pay off these college loans and help sustain them when they’re out of work? Answer: Your student of the arts is going to be just fine. As a child born to parents with minimal education and meager means, I always knew if I wanted to attend college and become a television writer, I was on my own. With no prior experience in searching for the right college, preparing for SATs or even setting aside funds, my parents had no idea how to prepare me for this enormous endeavor. Little did they know, they already had. My parents constantly encouraged me to dream big and go for it despite any odds. “Be fearless” is what they instilled. Their love and moral support were the greatest gifts they gave me, and today I’ve paid off my student loans, and I’m living my dreams as a Hollywood writer and producer. Now don’t get me wrong: Success didn’t come easy. I had to work three jobs through college and figure out how I was going to journey to Hollywood upon graduation. I had no pedigree,

no connections. But I attributed my success to three main keys: PASSION, EDUCATION and SUPPORT. For an artist, passion is everything. That inner yearning to create is undeniable and has to be fulfilled. Unlike any other professional career, there are no ordered steps for artists, and that’s where the education experience is paramount. For a decent or a good living, it takes planning, smart decisions, knowing one’s strengths and leaderships skills. An artist might be awesome but have poor survival skills, which is not a good look in today’s society, nor will it help with that mortgage-size student loan. Which leads me to the third key: support. I urge parents, to be executive advisers to their artists instead of enforcing their own wills. I’ve seen parents push their kids through med, law and business schools only to find their kid had a passion for music, news reporting, writing or dance. If you have a kid who has a passion for the arts, try not to worry too much about them. Just in this last decade, a plethora of new jobs and careers have been added to the marketplace, creating leaders of industry and entrepreneurship. Take it from a determined little girl from Brooklyn with big dreams, my parents’ love and support was, and still is, the wind beneath my wings.
