April 2017: Women at Work

Confucius said, “Choose a job you love and you will never have to work a day in your life.” Easy for an ancient philosopher to say but not for me. I love my job, but it’s work. It’s hard work. And despite the e pert ad ice, my ob is something use to define who am. belie e a ob is more than a title and work is something you do in all areas of your life. You want to have a great marriage? That takes work. Want to be a good parent? That takes work. Want to experience success in your career? That takes work. One of my favorite things about my work is that I encounter a lot of women whose stories never cease to amaze me. With each issue of skirt! magazine that I have been a part of (94 and counting), I have had the privilege of meeting the most talented and extraordinary women. Each month we share some of their remarkable stories. We celebrate who they are in the community, and we applaud their successes. We are their cheerleaders. But once a year we turn the tables. We give them the megaphone and invite them to shout their achievements from the rooftops! “Women at Work” is a special section for women of all professions to share their passion for their work. It gives them a platform to write in their own words why they love what they do. We ask them to share what other women can expect if they were to do business with them, and we encourage them to shake their pompoms! The women in this directory are brilliant. They are strong, they are beautiful, and they are smart! They have made mistakes, and they are better for them. They are building businesses, creating legacies, and changing lives. I encourage you to take the time to read about them all. To say in your head, “You go, girl” after each one and to consider working with them should you have a need. I am honored to have these women grace the pages of skirt! this month. They took a risk and put themselves out there. So, if you see one of them at the grocery store say, “Hello.” Give them a, “Rock on, sister!” When you’re scrolling your Facebook feed and see a post about their business, give them a “thumbs up.” We are all on the same team. Let’s go girlbosses! Peace, love and skirt! Jenny

Follow skirt! magazine on social media for #WomenatWork Wednesdays when we’ll highlight each woman in our Women at Work Professional Business Directory. And tune into our Facebook live video interviews to see what makes each of them successful.

CHARLESTON FIT & FRESH

COSBAR CHARLESTON

I believe that fueling your body with healthy food is one of the most fundamental lifestyle choices you can make. As a result, Charleston Fit & Fresh was created. Offering healthy meal preparation and delivery – we make healthy eating convenient and enjoyable. Our service helps facilitate a lifestyle change – whether for medical reasons, to reach weight or fitness-related goals, to learn how to eat healthy, portion control or simply for convenience!

I was born with a pad and pencil in my hand, always sketching. I attended the Art Institute in Pittsburgh and moved to Los Angeles, where I did illustration for a magazine. Later, I found myself doing headshot makeup. In Charleston, I started my most important job -- being a mom. While working at Saks Fifth Avenue, I was recruited by Trish McEvoy to be a regional traveling artist. In 2014, I was fortunate enough to meet Lily Garfield, the founder of Cosbar, who offered me the store manager position in Charleston.

REVERIE SHOP THERAPY, AMEY NICOLL CONSULTING, LLC

DERMATOLOGY & LASER CENTER OF CHARLESTON

I am from Denver and moved to Charleston almost eight years ago. An entrepreneur at heart, my desire to learn, create and change is reflected in the mixed-use design of Reverie Shop Therapy. When I purchased Reverie, originally Encore Interiors, in April 2015, it comprised two floors of consignments and antiques. Today, Reverie is a place to discover a carefully curated selection of international and local artisans and to take part in groups dedicated to yoga, sewing, books or women’s co-working events.

I graduated from Grand Valley State University with a master’s in physician assistant studies. As a Michigan native, I escaped the cold winters and love exploring the Lowcountry with my husband, new baby boy, Declan, and dog, Belle. My interest in dermatology began during physician assistant school, further enhanced with a concentration in that discipline. I truly have a passion for dermatology and love treating patients and helping improve their skin conditions. My primary focus is on general medical and surgical dermatology.

OYSTERS ALL AROUND

Entrepreneur

I have always dreamed of owning a place where women could go and be transformed with hair, makeup and fashion. I raised my three sons in Summerville and knew it would be the place I would bring my vision to life. After 30 years, my dream became a reality. In 2014, I opened MOD Beaute Studio and in 2015, I opened FLY Modern Apparel. We began hosting styling events and the response has been overwhelming! Visit us at MOD Beaute Studio and FLY Modern Apparel and let our team assist you with your transformation.

I relocated to Charleston to pursue a career in marriage and family therapy five years ago. I love the therapeutic work I do, but found myself wanting more — personally and professionally. I have been able to combine friendship, fun and my favorite Lowcountry treat in Oysters All Around, a retail business I recently launched with Elly. Our first design was the Charleston Oyster Keychain, and we’ve expanded the accessories line to include necklaces, bottle openers and more, all made out of or inspired by our love for oysters and Charleston. I like to view every patient and medical situation as individual and unique. The best lesson I learned from a recent art class is to recognize that we all have different points of view for how we see the world and what’s important. At Dermatology & Laser enter of harleston, e been able to find a professional home and help each patient find and embrace her uni ue beauty and best skin health. I think having an artist’s eye is instrumental in helping my patients achieve subtle and natural improvements that help them “go for the glow.” When patients ask me, “Dr.Walker, what can I do to have beautiful skin like yours?” I always tell them to use SPF 30 sunblock on your face every single day, even when it’s raining, both to prevent skin cancer and because it’s the best anti-aging thing you can do for your skin.
