The idea is that as fall begins, the weather starts to cool down, the leaves change colors and everyone breaks out their coats. You won’t see these telltale signs of autumn in Santa Barbara. It reaches 80 degrees at 9am, we have palm trees and warm beach days. Rather than traditional cold-weather silhouettes, we embrace fall colored clothing. We have our own take on celebrating fall! This issue, our color comes, not from leaves, but from the color of the bourbon cocktail in this month’s Dish It Up, the nasturtiums adorning the healthy dishes at

Alchemy Arts Cafe in The Art of Being Well, and the golden beach sunsets in Getaway From the Everyday. The brown hues of the suede tote in Everything You Need For Fall and the endless coffee drinks and baked goods in What’s in Your Cup? make you forget about walking on sidewalks covered with colorful foliage. The flavors of Santa Maria BBQ from Barbareño, weekend getaways to Shutters on the Beach, sleeveless holiday party dresses, and jewel-toned decor are just a few things in this issue that make our Santa Barbara fall special.

I

t’s a balmy Santa Barbara night, and like many Friday evenings, the energy of State Street seems to grow with every clanking dish and wandering group of chatty out-of-towners. For those looking for the quintessential dinner experience, downtown hosts an impressive sampling. Classic international fare like Italian, French, Mexican, and even traditional pub food, all take residence within this two-mile radius. However, upon closer look, one might notice a lack of creative dining options that feature regional cuisine — cuisine that celebrates the original and authentic flavors of our beloved coastal town. Enter Barbareño.

14 | NOVEMBER 2015

Barely a year old but boasting a strong following and an inventive menu, Barbareño fills the gap by celebrating the homegrown flavors and unique stories native to Santa Barbara. My friend and I decide this standout will perfectly fit the bill for our Friday night excursion. As we drive up De La Vina, the charm of the passing Victorian homes reminds us that we will be dining slightly off the beaten path — a welcome realization. We spot our destination on the corner by the glow of the patio’s overhead string lights and the group of people comfortably socializing beneath them. Already I can feel the allure of the restaurant — a secret gem, a lively meet-up, a local’s Friday night.

Before we know it, we are escorted to our table inside where the energy heightens as we pass passionate foodies gathered over beautifully plated dishes. Our waiter introduces himself as David, and goes on to explain how Barbareño offers an authentic Central Coast experience. The region’s rich history is echoed even in the very name of the restaurant, ‘Barbareño,’ the extinct language of the Chumash people native to Santa Barbara. I don’t think it gets any more authentic than that.

With a quick glance around the room, I pick up on an earthiness that pays tribute to the ancient land on which the restaurant stands. Dark wood and fresh white linen top each table. Piles of chopped wood, indigenous woven baskets and iron stools all surround the bar area. The stained concrete floors and modern lighting lend themselves to a more industrial-feeling restaurant but with a rustic warmth — a unique balance that I’m quite confident was intentional.

SBLIFEANDSTYLE.COM | 15

SANTA MARIA TARTARE cold smoked tenderloin, bean sprouts, tomato coulis

David arrives with the homemade bread and goes on to describe the delicate nuances of the freshly churned butter. I proceed to paint some onto a fresh piece of sourdough canvas. I’m impressed with his knowledge of each ingredient and the intricate process it went through to make it onto the plate. He must have read my facial expression — of both curiosity and excitement — because he reminds me that every dish has a story, and also, that Barbareño is dedicated to the art of reinterpretation. Well from the fresh sourdough and the pure gold they call butter, I say let the reinterpretation begin. To start, we choose the Chef ’s Plate from the “Snacks” section of the menu, and I take the extra time to let the interior soak in. At the center of each table is an intricate rock or shell, its crevices lined with succulents and spouting air plants. I take a sip of my water from a thick-rimmed, olivetinted glass that was crafted from a repurposed wine bottle. Another hidden element to add to the restaurant’s already impressive whimsy. I continue to admire the decor and the lively conversations going on at each table. Everyone

16 | NOVEMBER 2015

seems to be feeding off the energy of the whole room, like a scene from an Italian curbside cafe, a bustling New York City restaurant, or a wine country tasting room. The warm, inviting atmosphere serves as the perfect backdrop to Barbareño’s true loves — community, good conversation and exceptional fare.

As if right on cue, the couple to my left leans over and eagerly unravels the story of how they were introduced to Barbareño. The Ventura residents had read an enthusiastic review of the restaurant and had to make the short trip up north to experience it for themselves. She goes on to say how high her expectations are, and that my friend and I are sure to be in for a real culinary treat. Our conversation is only one of the many lighthearted and spontaneous exchanges that fill the

establishment. Also adding to this welcomed chaos is the open kitchen — the whirring of the KitchenAid mixer, the slicing of more sourdough bread and the focused yet elegant plating by the chef. My friend and I comment on how lucky we are to be seated by the entertainment of the kitchen. I soon realize, though, that most tables are close enough to catch the action. Another job well done by Barbareño. David arrives with our Chef ’s Plate: finger food versions of some of the most flavorful and brave combinations I’ve ever tasted. We sample the Santa Maria Tartare, made using all the components of the classic Santa Maria barbecue, but in mostly raw ingredients. I’m talking garlic crust, cold-smoked tenderloin, tomato coulis, cilantro salt, bean and onion sprouts, and a jalapeño curl — in one bite. Alongside the tartare is the Avocado Gazpacho, a chilled avocado soup with white balsamic, togarashi, a brioche crouton, and Thai basil. One sip alone, and I know I’m coming back. The final feature of the Chef ’s Plate is my favorite; the fun and quirky Eggamuffins are blinis topped with Seascape cheese mousse, speck and cured egg yolk, paying homage to the invention of the Egg McMuffin at the Milpas McDonald’s in 1971. After sampling each daring option of the Chef ’s Plate — and then savoring a second round of them all — I’m confident that Barbareño likes to set the bar pretty high.

MARKET FISH wild king salmon, garlic, potatoes, meyer lemon

As David clears our plates, and we bombard him with various questions about the food, my friend notices herbs hanging in the wide doorway leading to the other half of the kitchen. Rosemary, eucalyptus, bay leaves, and sage placed overhead almost as if a statement: fresh, flavorful herbs and authentic ingredients take center stage here, starring in every dish we send out. We scan through each of the equally tempting appetizer options and decide on the California Roll and the Oak Tagliatelle. They both prove to be perfect snapshots of the individuality Barbareño has brought to the Santa Barbara restaurant scene. The California Roll is drizzled with homemade Sriracha, a black

garlic ponzu swirl and ginger rice milk foam. You heard right — ginger rice milk foam. However, the highlight of the dish is the avocado, which we learn is also a Santa Barbara native, with the first avocado tree having been planted right where the outdoor patio currently sits. The Oak Tagliatelle seems like a meal straight from an enchanted forest, as the acorn pasta sits in a soothing, smokey broth and is sprinkled with asparagus and wild mushrooms that the chef might have just foraged for us. My friend thinks she’s identified a sort of wild zucchini flower among the grated goat cheese garnish. We agree that we can’t be too sure. Regardless, each dish has been outrageously inventive and flavorful so we say bring on the mystery. SBLIFEANDSTYLE.COM | 19

SANTA MARIA BBQ tri tip, red oak, pico de gallo, pinquito beans

Although our stomachs are filling fast, our anticipation for their most popular dish, the Santa Maria BBQ, is sky high. Served with braised pinquito beans, garlic butter and deconstructed pico de gallo, the cold smoked tri-tip is the juicy, melt-inyour-mouth tender you hope for. The top-selling entrée seals the deal. My friend and I take only a minute to conclude that dessert is necessary for a complete Barbareño experience. True to form, the restaurant offers non-traditional yet perfectly paired combinations like Olive Oil Brioche and Basil Ice Cream. David explains that in honoring the classic pesto theme, the basil-infused ice cream is matched with lemon curd, candied pine nuts, a drizzle of olive oil and a parmesan cookie. We take our first bites and practically sigh. The airiness of the homemade ice cream is perfect with the fresh basil, tart lemon and rich olive oil. It’s as if the familiar flavors of pesto have finally met their match in the classic creaminess of everyone’s favorite dessert.

SBLIFEANDSTYLE.COM | 21

The ice cream and this entire culinary adventure couldn’t have been more of a win. Every course was bold, fresh and imaginative — leaving us equally impressed and entertained throughout. As we make our way out we are lucky enough to hear about the vision behind the restaurant from co-owners, Jesse and Julian, general manager and head chef. They explain that a two-month trip to international foodie meccas in Spain, France and Italy served as the inspiration for refining the heart and soul of Santa Barbara’s own palate. From there, their creativity soared once they decided to limit the ingredients to those which best honor the Central Coast. My friend and I, so full from the exquisite food and our renewed sense of Santa Barbara pride, graciously thank the owners and our insightful server. As we slowly walk past the patio on our way to the car, we notice the second shift of Friday night locals getting started; the sourdough bread and fresh butter just arriving. Their outdoor meetup seems enchanting — twinkling lights, fresh air and blankets nearby in case of a chill. My friend and I look at each other with a single thought. What more could have made our already delightful experience that much better? Perhaps the patio? We agree that we’ll have to return shortly to find out.

GET AWAY FROM THE

EVERYDAY Written & Photographed by Silas Fallstich

Luxurious Santa Monica hotel Shutters on the Beach is a home away from home.

36 | NOVEMBER 2015

SBLIFEANDSTYLE.COM | 37

I

’m roaming south on the 101 for a two-day getaway. There is a slight haze on the horizon as my trek begins. I jump off the 101 onto Highway 23 through the Santa Monica Mountains. Tranquil green hills illuminated by a strong midday light hold my eye as I beeline due west. This route may not be as quick as the fast lane but it sure is pretty. As I wheel down into the Malibu city limits, the Pacific Ocean, like most days this Indian summer, is gleaming brightly. I take a left turn on Highway 1, roll the windows down and suddenly I’m in a trance. The ocean is a heart piercing deep blue. I’m doing everything I can to keep my eyes on the road but they’re wandering. Sandy beaches are pushed up against the Pacific Coast Highway and I see surfers in full force, carving hidden patterns on the fronts of waves. Every beach access sign is reaching out and asking me to hold hands. As much as a part of me wants to respond to these innocuous invitations, I must holdfast. I’m destined for Shutters on the Beach and if my patience endures I won’t stop until I’m in Santa Monica. I arrive at high noon and I’m instantly ready for lunch. On a friend’s recommendation I land at Art’s Table. Set on the corner of Montana Avenue and 10th Street, the vibe is relaxed and has an everyone is welcome feel. The service is quick and efficient. While I’m waiting for my beer I take note of the staff ’s delightful assortment of shoes. In just a few moments various explosions of style and color swirl past me. The server recommends the Homemade Turkey Burger. It is loaded with goat cheese, onion confit, roasted tomato, frisée, and

38 | NOVEMBER 2015

garlic aioli. The burger and accompanying curly fries are quite literally consumed. The staff barely has enough time to check on the quality before my meal isn’t gone. Post lunch, I drive towards my destination taking in the Santa Monica scene as I go. I enjoy the bustling feeling. People seem to be everywhere at once. Even the pets seem to have a different level of prestige. At least a twin pair of Dobermans with leopard print bow tie collars seem to think so. I can’t help but notice the Santa Monica strut they exude with each bouncy step they add a new level of refinement. I have some difficulty navigating the transition back to Highway 1 but an interesting structure on Ocean Avenue and Moomat Ahiko Way reminds me that “There are no wrong turns just opportunities to discover something new.” The lobby at Shutters is a hub of activity. A group of thirty-somethings are consumed with their laptops and paper work, an ignored but grand beachfront view sits just behind them, a business woman rummages over the newspaper, a couple laughs exuberantly, cocktails in hand, their beaming faces have a lobster hue, the scene is set and my twoday getaway has just begun. Every time I pass through this space, whether early in the morning, at midday or late in the evening, there’s always something happening. The bell hop gives me a quasi property tour on the way to my room. They opened in 1993 and boast 186 guest rooms, 12 suites, 2 restaurants, and the most undisturbed ocean view you may ever see. Located 0.3 miles from the Santa Monica Pier and less than a few strides from the sand, this location redefines beach front property.

SBLIFEANDSTYLE.COM | 39

40 | NOVEMBER 2015

The hallways at Shutters are lined with a wild assortment of art work. The collection is the personal gallery of the property owners. A light blue oil on canvas of a canoe and glassy ocean puts me at ease, the scene and tones all conveying a sense of comfort. The refined yet comfortable feeling in the lobby and halls segue to a light, airy and familiar feeling in my room. I have never been in a room quite like this yet I instantly feel at home. My first afternoon at Shutters is spent taking in these comforts. The space feels more like a personal beach getaway than a beachside resort. I’m enamored with the trinkets, in-room

library and overall decor. Broad windows and glass doors let in all the pleasantries of the outdoors. Hardwood floors, lead into a white tile-lined fireplace, a raised bed and spacious bathroom with a peek-a-boo window; two balconies encompass the remainder of the space. What really has me intrigued are the “goodies” that are present. A wooden yoyo holds my attention as I attempt to “walk the dog.” Juggling balls, two complimentary ferris wheel tickets and an “If you dare,” sign over the mini bar, make me feel like the property owner is subtly telling me, “I know your stay will be good, I want your stay to be great.”

SBLIFEANDSTYLE.COM | 41

Evening sneaks up on me quickly. I relinquish my street clothes for board shorts and a light t-shirt and walk barefoot to the beach. My only possession is my room key, I have not a care in the world. The sunset is magical. A bright sun disappears behind the pier, momentarily creating an ethereal orange scene. Just as the light sneaks behind the distant mountains orange transcends into rainbow-inspired hues of pink, purple and red. If this isn’t paradise I don’t know what is. In the morning a few clouds highlight the blue lines of the sky. I spend the first hour intermittently reading and gazing out onto the beach walk. Before long I’m treading across the smooth grated sand toward the big blue ocean. A midmorning swim discourages the Indian summer heat. When I lay in the sand to dry I feel disconnected from everything. There’s the sun, the rolling sounds of the ocean and the quickly evaporating coolness from my shorts. Everything else seems pointless.

42 | NOVEMBER 2015

For a time I welcome these things, and then sun begins to sear me. I wriggle as if somehow I can dodge the beating gaze. Before long the heat gets the best of me and I retreat to lunch. 1 Pico is more than the address at Shutters, it’s the hotel dining room. I like the light and fresh feeling the natural light is creating. My table is a stride from the beach. A subtle breeze from the shore offers me respite on this hot day. A cold beer in hand helps in keeping me comfortable. My server is friendly and accommodating. I want to dine slowly and at ease. She aids me in choosing the calamari to start and the lobster BLT for my main. Calamari pan-seared is a welcome break from the recent trend of fried calamari. The flavors are alive and undiluted by breading. Garlic and basil co-mingle on my palate, balanced by the light flavors of arugula and lemon.

SBLIFEANDSTYLE.COM | 43

The lobster BLT is unlike anything I’ve ever had. I like everything about this dish — from the flavors to the way the ingredients are arranged in between the bread. Everything goes together in a simple but delightful way. The lobster is the most apparent flavor, yet it’s enhanced by the other elements. I’m very self-conscious about eating sandwiches in pubic, especially when I’m alone. This BLT is messy yet my inhibition isn’t present; my mind is lost in the flavors, my only concern is that it will be gone too soon. I always enjoy the end of a meal, the end of a trip or well written book, when nothing is before you but what you absolutely need. Right now all I need is a spoon, the remnants of my appetite and the salted caramel sundae the server has just put before me. The variety of ingredients instantly has me bemused. Ice cream, popcorn and brownie chunks, all topped with whipped cream and a delicate drizzle of chocolate.

44 | NOVEMBER 2015

The combination of flavors is making my head swim, this dish is dangerous. The crunch of the popcorn and richness of the brownie balance the creamy sweetness of the ice cream. Before I know it I’m sitting half Indian style, like a child, my mind and body enamored with flavor. Needless to say I happily finish every bite. When I began this trip I wanted to find a new route to somewhere I’d already been. I had grand expectations to experience a vast number of Santa Monica hot spots. Yet when I arrived at Shutters I was enchanted. I felt as if I had returned home after a long time away and nothing, not even the allure of grandiose experiences could pull me away.

Handlebar

Coffee Roasters

I

48 | NOVEMBER 2015

t’s early Monday morning as I cross Canon Perdido and pad up the sidewalk, I pass a long clustered line of parked bicycles — enough to constitute a well formed Peloton. When I move over the threshold and enter Handlebar Coffee Roasters I’m greeted by a busy room. Natural light beams in from north and west facing windows. Expansive

walls are decorated with enlarged photographs. There’s a rolling hum of friendly chatter, coffee equipment and the sudden eruption of the barista’s voice, “Courtney medium latte.” The aroma is what strikes me the most. Freshly roasted beans with sweet and pungent flavors, I feel as if I’m tasting the coffee with my nose and I haven’t ordered yet.

The barista greets me with a big happy smile. Once I’ve ordered I tuck myself into a corner bench seat and open my current read. My coffee experience is usually diluted by computers, consultations and a general sense of lethargy. It’s no wonder I intake my coffee as if it’s another duty on my to-do list. Not today though. At Handlebar owner Aaron Olson’s bidding I’m going to partake in my coffee free of electronic devices, interruptions or other duties. “Coffee always tastes better if you can relax and it is not on the fly,” he said to me recently. Just now he is across the room toiling over his German Probat coffee roaster. Twenty pounds at a time, he hand-roasts all of the coffee Handlebar produces; on average he will put

out 1,000 pounds in a week. Just behind the coffee bar his girlfriend and business partner Kim Anderson is watching over the baristas’ work, she lends an aiding hand when necessary and banters friendlily with guests as they reach for their drinks and treats. On November 1st they will celebrate the shop’s four year anniversary. What began in a local garage has an Old World history for the couple. They spent almost a decade cycling professionally in Europe; in their down time they became enamored with European cafes and coffee shops. “A goal of ours when retiring from cycling was to bring some of the European cafe culture to the US.

We landed in Santa Barbara and shortly after, Handlebar began,” Aaron explains while sorting freshly roasted beans. “Hopefully when people visit us they will want to sit and have more than just a quick coffee on the go. We want to create an environment people are comfortable in and can enjoy.” Based on the crowd before me I’d say they’re achieving high marks. “Silas, cold brew,” echoes a friendly voice. My cold brew is mild in flavor with hints of caramel and subtle nuances of fruit, the season for this drink is almost over but I’ve become attached to it these last months. Through some research I’ve learned the main difference between cold brew and iced coffee involves temperature. Cold brew is

They are not only offering a product and quality customer service, they’re building relationships with the people, that’s why people come back day after day, not just for the coffee but for the relationships. It’s no wonder that a lot of the time you will find a line out the door. Everyone has a particular way they enjoy their coffee. Kim, like many people, loves the ritual of coffee first thing in the morning. Aaron likes the connection with people that coffee affords, “The customer of course, but even more so trying to do justice to all the people that place time, effort and love into producing the coffee.” No matter why you choose coffee as your

brewed cold and never heated, while iced coffee is normal coffee that’s then cooled down. If you’ve found that iced coffee can taste bitter, you should try a cold brew. Due to the brewing style the acidity is much lower, creating a smoother drink. The flavor of coffee and roast strength at Handlebar is truly a matter of personal taste. “We are not trying to align with current or popular trends, we are more interested in the coffee we like and the coffee our clients enjoy,” Aaron explains. Locals are really important at Handlebar. If you take five minutes to sit back and watch Aaron roasting or Kim at work behind the bar you see that their energy and attention is always with their customers.

Valley Grind I

’m sitting on the patio at Valley Grind in Santa Ynez. At the table next to me sits a three-yearold with half of a chocolate cream cheese muffin in his mouth. When I ask him what it’s like he say’s “good.” When I prod a little, I get him to explain that the muffin tastes like chocolate. The boy’s name

is Warren, he has a beaming smile that’s directed at his mom. When he isn’t eating he’s talking to her in a low controlled voice, always aware of my presence. It doesn’t take long for him to warm up to me, soon we are shuffling through photos on my computer, a pastime he takes on regularly with his mom’s iPhone.

Interactions like this are commonplace and happen in great number at Valley Grind. Sometimes they’re planned meetings between friends, other times they are happenstance meetings between complete strangers. No matter what, they always seem to hold an elevated sense of importance. Store owner Chelsey Williams had her first experience at this spot years ago. “Before I worked here I hung out here. I made life long friends and memories here. When I was given the opportunity, I wanted to create the same opportunity for others in this same space,” she explains to me. That’s exactly what’s being offered up at Valley Grind, daily doses of opportunity for not only coffee but also company. I’ve yet to visit them and not interact with a complete stranger.

these are ever apparent when visiting Valley Grind, other things resonate with visitors. The interaction with the barista is always more than the ordering of a coffee, it’s a prompt to your coming experience. The majority of customers receive their coffee how they receive the space, with open arms. “There’s no limit on Wi-Fi or a Wi-Fi code; nobody wants to walk into an empty space,” she explains while greeting several of her regular customers. She embraces the small town vibe and openly explains that they cater to locals. “I want my customers to come back every single day, to trust in Valley Grind and to be able to always get the same quality no matter the day or who is the barista.” That’s why she uses a push button espresso machine, consistency and attention to quality. The staff is never content with bad coffee walking out the door.

She founded the coffee shop on three principles: quality, customer service and consistency. While

Valley Grind opened just over four years ago and has received an out cry of support and love from the local community. To go along with an ever growing base of regular coffee drinkers Chelsey has small groups of women that stroll into the

store just to assess the most recent additions to her merchandise shelves. From Whiskey Stones and Wine Balls to an assortment of gifts and trinkets, there’s a cluster of goodies and gifts; the ever rotating stockpile has something for everyone.

Whether you’re like me and your interactions teeter totter with pre-k chocolate enthusiasts or you strive for something a little more sophisticated, there is a number of things to be enthralled with at Valley Grind. They serve Caribbean Coffee Company beans straight from Goleta. They have a triple threat of coffee on draft, they have seasonal offerings such as a Lavender Latte, and if that isn’t enough, they offer baked goods and daily food specials. There are a lot of good things

about the coffee at Valley Grind, but the best is the connection with people it affords. “Coffee is universal and it brings people together,” Chelsey explains to me. If you’re looking for good coffee, good company and a good space to create memories check out Valley Grind in Santa Ynez. You’ll be sure to find a menagerie of characters and on some days you’ll find me in the corner, flipping through photos with Warren, comparing chocolate muffin mustaches with content smiles on our faces.

Lucky Llama

I

Coffee House

couldn’t count the number of times I’ve driven south to Carpinteria solely for the coffee. While I always make the 15-minute trek for the cup of joe, the baristas always have me bouncing to their beat. When I enter this space I never know what music will be playing but I’m always engaged with what’s on. At the moment it’s “Seconds” by Ghost Loft. A repetitive chorus with a rhythmic and synthesized beat streams into the shop. I recently read a quote that lingered with me and I think it applies to this place; the unknown author of the quote says, “Art is

52 | NOVEMBER 2015

how we decorate space, music is how we decorate time.” Tucked just off of Carpinteria Avenue, behind a red bicycle shop and sitting underneath the world’s largest Torrey Pine tree, is Lucky Llama coffee shop. Like the names of the in store music the name is something conjured by spare of the moment creativity and logic. It was coined by shop owner Ryan Moore and his wife’s daughter. She wanted to call the shop Scary Llama, logic got 50% and they ended up with Lucky Llama.

With enough indoor seating to accommodate just under 20 guests and an open air patio with plenty of overflow, the space exudes a feeling of a boardwalk shop, art gallery and cafe all blended into one. A large number of the guests that come through are decked out in board shorts and flip-flops, they carry a salty sense of the ocean close at hand. It’s late in the afternoon and based on the wavelike gestures of several guests the waves are good. At this moment I’ve just finished 16 ounces of iced chai latte and my leg is bouncing to the the beat of “Sex Tourists” by French Kicks. The beat is mellow, easy to follow and creates a sense of calm. Lucky Llama was one of the first places I visited when I moved to Santa Barbara. In all honesty it has been a lot of firsts for me. It was the first place that made me feel like I made the right choice in moving here. It

was the first place that I spotted a celebrity, and believe it or not it was the first place I enjoyed an acai bowl. If I’m “lucky” maybe some more firsts will come out over time. It’s with all these memories in mind that I’m surprised when people haven’t heard of it, or have never visited. Maybe it’s my rural roots but I don’t want to be the only one willing to drive 24 miles for coffee. Early morning barista Aubrey doesn’t seem to mind the lack of attention. “I see half of the city of Carpinteria in a day, our clients are really local and more like family than anything else.” How many coffee shops have a personal heard of unicorn-clad guests coming to sip their brew? Not any others that I’m aware of. If you need proof check their Instagram @luckyllamacoffee. To go along with their wild customers the shop offers an assortment of pastries, baked goods and drinks. Some guest favorites include; the Gypsy Rose tea, zucchini muffins, Mayan Mocha Latte and the Moon Bowl, an acai bowl with all the fixings and peanut butter. All this and organic locally roasted Castle Coffee Roasters coffee as a trump card. The coffee shop has been open just over four and half years. “When we opened Lucky Llama we really wanted to take speciality coffee and make it approachable and available to everyone, regardless of who they were” he explains to me. If you linger long enough at Lucky Llama you’re likely to see a broad spectrum of patrons. Some straight from the pacific, others out exploring the town, if you get in early enough you’ll find people clad in business attire, many of them shuffling along to their duties with coffee in hand. Others relaxing just long enough to finish their cup and grab a bowl to go. The clientele, music and goodies all have one thing in common and that’s the infectious and laid back space that is Lucky Llama. Whether your next coffee is your very first or your first this week, make time to get something at Lucky Llama, you’re sure to get exactly what you wanted and more than you expected.

PRIDE

of cocktails Photographed by Silas Fallstich Written by Madison Ludlow

I

t’s 5 o‘clock on a Wednesday evening. You know what that means; cocktail hour! I am on my journey to visit one of Santa Barbara’s newer cocktail bars, The Good Lion. I walk through the front doors of this dimly lit spot and find myself in an entirely different decade. The shelves are filled with popular records, vintage suitcases and family heirlooms. From the wood handcrafted bar stools to the iridescent lights hanging from the ceiling, this hole in the wall renders a classic design. Behind the bar two bartenders wearing aprons are bouncing around each other like dancing mice, shaking mixers, slicing produce, and slapping fresh herbs against their forearms to release the beautiful aromas. I am completely captivated.

I settle into a leather-seated stool at the bar. There is a strong crisp scent of citrus floating through the air, and being my curious self, I need to have a taste of whatever it is. Moments later a special drink appears, The Hurricane. Prepared with a sweet tangerine-infused house-made syrup, this tequila-based drink is the perfect kick-off to my warm Santa Barbara evening. I look around to see tables filled. Businessmen with rolled-up sleeves laugh amongst one another, enjoying what looks like not their first round of drinks. Beyond the laughter, I can hear faint sounds of instrumental music humming. As the night goes on, diverse crowds roll in one after another. The bartender brings me another favorite drink, their Bar Drake Manhattan. It’s a traditional Manhattan with an enticing twist. The taste reminds me of a visit to New York years ago, where I first experienced that sharp bourbon warmth against the back of my throat. Except this time they’ve combined it with smoked maple syrup and barrel aged bitters; a drink that’s been perfected for the seasons ahead.

Tucked between the Granada Theatre and hotspot Sama Sama Kitchen, the Good Lion emits an energy that Santa Barbara seemed to have been missing. Misty and Brandon Ristainom, the owners of the bar, sit down next to me over yet another attractive cocktail, The Bramble On. Gin, blackberry, lemon, French vermouth, orange flower water; it is a warm red color, garnished with fresh mint and served with a compostable paper straw. The orange aromas act as a perfect balance against the chilled gin. Brandon tells me how each drink is carefully crafted and the menu is always changing, determined by the local produce they can get their hands on. Currently maintaining 90% local and organic produce, the owners strive for a more sustainable waste system. I’m handed one last drink, The Fizz. Served in a dainty stemmed glass, a layer of sweet egg whites with a hint of lemon sits over homemade raspberry syrup and gin. It is a liquid treat. As I look around the room their popularity doesn’t at all surprise me. The Good Lion is a place that offers a humbling experience and a highly attractive cocktail menu. This unique bar holds a specific intention while still maintaining traditional roots. As I leave with the pleasant tastes on my tongue I can easily say this bar has become a favorite of mine.

EVERYTHING YOU NEED FOR

Written by Rah Riley Photographed by Shannon Jayne Styled by Kym Fregoso Tolentino with Très K

While the rest of the country blushes in leafy crimson and dusky gold, the colors of fall in Santa Barbara get their inspiration from deep jewel tones. Like a cache revealing hefty gemstones and 35-carat rocks, the colors of November have us falling over ourselves with lists of local must-haves. In this month's accessory editorial, burgundy burns with the fiery romantic pieces like plum lipstick, viper polish, snakeskin boots, and feverishly handsome cowhide pillows. A collection of navy, like darling blue polish paired with bold Tanzanite jewels and chunky navy knits, keeps things cool and collected. Our selection of prewinter whites are staples for the season. Erno Laszo's

rejuvenating face creams, a cult-worthy cuff, and a pearl topped white gold and black diamond ring are just a few of the highlights. If you're going green this year, the vintage glasses from Blue Door, Dior cosmetics, a fluffy green handbag, and green tourmaline jewelry from Gauthier have us absolutely emerald with envy. For warmer tones that keep sunshine in the season, we're craving golden trays from Cabana Home, a gilded set of sake cups, and a certain shamelessly gold-studded handbag. Jasmine Rouge fragrance, Red Violet lipstick, and a pair of gold rimmed sunglasses from Occhiali, round out our accessories and bring these jewel tones back to their earthy roots.

THE ART OF BEING WELL Written by Rah Riley Photographed by Riley Yahr

S

tep through the right stone archway on the corner of West Haley and Chapala and it’s impossible not to catch your breath: 9 A.M. light is spreading out across broad wooden tables and freshly cut flowers, filtering through geometric window carvings, and illuminating handcarved patterns that have danced with the sun of Moroccan summers and glided over enlightened dwellers of Tibetan mosques. High vaulted ceilings drenched

in California sunshine meet hallways lined with light wood floors and wooden water bowls afloat with flowers. Sunny geometric and floral motifs drift across the cushioned reception space, laden with mixed-print pillows and authentic Turkish side tables. All the elements are present. Space, air, fire, water, and earth. Consciousness, too. It is both starry-eyed and unsurprising that sunlight, our purest source of energy, would play such an awe-striking role in the life of this space.

SBLIFEANDSTYLE.COM | 77

Outside, clear blue skies sit still beyond rustling palm leaves and the bustle of downtown continues to accelerate with morning traffic. With so much going on — potential for spontaneity, opportunity for attention to be called in different directions (few-to-none being inward), so many personalities and paths crossing over and into one another — it’s exciting. Energizing. In the way that San Francisco and Los Angeles leave me a bit winded and breathless the moment I step in and close the door of my Uber, Santa Barbara has its own moments of perfect hustle as well. It’s a seductive pace, getting swept up in rushed departures for early morning flights, caught in a color-coded rapid fire of afternoon appointments, lost in an unkempt closet of clothes you hardly have time to wear. Perhaps our relationship status with franticness is a testament to our own wellbeing; there’s something about the swell of activity that offers a rush of meaning, vigor, and vitality that we just haven’t found when we are still with ourselves…yet. Alchemy Wellness Spa and Organic Café is a wellness center. Not a gym. Not a multi-functional yoga studio. Not a resort spa. It’s a holistic wellness center that wants to take your hand, listen to your life, and join your journey of well-being. If you have goals like reducing stress, increasing energy, changing the shape of your body, sharpening your mind, or finding deeper connections, there’s an urban retreat you should check out. It’s a community of soul-seekers, listeners, learners, and huggers.

Masters and students. Wives and moms, husbands and fathers nurturing and strengthening their auras. Gracious, patient, kind humans supporting one another in a quest for nourishment and fulfillment. Women and men on a path of cleansing. Treading with you into the filthy difficult muck of unhealthy habits and challenging emotional conflict, sharing their strength and good energy so you may rise up through messy mud to truly blossom as the enlightened lotus. Grounded in earth, aspiring towards the divine, there’s a place in town that has us sizing up our chakras. When we consider that only one-third of our being is physical we recognize that a large part of our being is subtle energy and matter. The Chakra Well-Being treatment package focuses on healing to the subtle energy field via the physical lymphatic system, marma massage, and the light techniques. Essential oils and their plant ancestry heal the energy body, restoring well-being through balancing and harmonizing the chakra system. With so much potential power, it makes sense that we should want to recognize, respect, and harness this energy that fuels our physical and spiritual consciousness. If you want to say hello to all that energy inside of you and begin a life-long journey of well-being, step one towards good vibrations is tuning in to how you are feeling. Not yet worrying about diagnosing your symptoms, just recognizing them. Step two, make some moves.

THE JOURNEY At Alchemy Wellness Spa, the journey starts with a complimentary wellness consultation where you can voice symptoms and intentions and get to know their services and programs. It’s a very good place to start. As for the multifaceted program you put together, the journey will be yours. One day might begin, like mine, with a smoothie, followed by yoga, another stop in the café for lunch, and topped off with a few spa treatments. With a spectrum

78 | NOVEMBER 2015

of healing services like yoga, acupuncture, and energy medicine, as well as bodywork, organic skincare, cleansing programs, and an organic, seasonal vegetarian cafe, Alchemy is bridging the gap between Eastern and Western wellness with a holistic approach. And when you step back to look (I recommend taking a walk-by in the early evening for an extra bit of enchantment) and take in the glow of good vibes, it just makes sense.

ANIMA MUNDI APOTHECARY ELIXIRS & TONICS

ANIMA MUNDI “IN THE MOOD” APHRODISIAC ELIXIR

Enter the first stop on your path to wellness: the café. Morning light is spilling through the carved wooden window coverings onto rich stained tables, wicker chairs, pale amethyst linens lounging on fine floral china plates, and fresh cut aster flowers and tiger lilies. All the walls here are either chalkboards, floor-to-ceiling windows, intricate imported doors, or stocked with Anima Mundi Apothecary and hefty glass jars of assorted tonics and elixirs. A few steps up from the sidewalk and you feel like you’ve ascended into a refuge, and in that, it’s already doing exactly what it was created to do.

THE MENU The menu is a reflection of the Alchemy community and their personal wellness programs. Integrating Chinese Medicine, Ayurveda, Western Herbalism, modern scientific research, and various schools of nutrition, the staff and chefs design the recipes around Alchemy’s ongoing cleansing programs, local and organic produce, and feedback from clients. Breakfast items include Alchemy’s Porridge: organic oats, buckwheat, apples, raisins, vanilla, and cinnamon served with almond milk and topped with toasted almonds and blueberries; coconut curry with a side of sautéed garlic quinoa for a main dish; or the Apple Honey Tart with caramelized apples, almonds, 80 | NOVEMBER 2015

honey, sesame seeds, walnuts, and spirulina with a strawberry and mango mint sauce. If healthy food leads to healthy energy, then you should at least be off to a good start. After yoga, I’ll order the Buckwheat Crepes. These are slathered with Greek yogurt and cardamom cream, stuffed with caramelized apples, and dowsed in winter berries and toasted sweetened nuts. See what I did there? Almost had you thinking you were getting a breakfast burrito.

THE YOGA Let’s just start here: This ain’t your Tuesdays-andThursdays, post-work, bring-a-friend, hot-power-fusionflow sweat-it-all-out yoga session. Those classes are empowering, strengthening, vital, and so wonderful when you want a workout that you’ll feel every time you try to sit down the next day; but that is not what this is. Seriously, let me have made this mistake for you: if you’re planning on joining a quality-over-quantity, transformational yoga session at Alchemy, save your peek-a-boo active wear for CorePower and opt for a breezy pair of palazzo pants. This is Siddhi Yoga. Yoga in its traditional form. Masterto-student. Tailored to the select constellations of energy sitting in the room. Transcendent and transformational

for your subtle body. An evolving practice of pranayam, kriya, asana, movement, meditation, mudra therapy, and chanting all deeply rooted in Kundalini Yoga, Naam Yoga, and Sattva Yoga. By the end of class, I am thinking about blocked energy within my own body that could be counterproductive to my good vibrations. For challenging and brain-oxidizing movements, mudras, and pranayama, the Reset and Rebalance Yoga with Siddhi is offered Monday and Wednesday mornings. Her Kundalini Yoga and Sattva Yoga: Women of Grace and Grit classes are on Saturdays. The weekly yoga schedule also includes pilates, Gyrokinesis, Da Vinci Board sessions, Tai Chi, and community acupuncture.

THE ACUPUNCTURE Not an appointment went by that my therapist did not suggest how the center’s acupuncture might contribute to my wellness within their area of expertise. Working with traditional Chinese medicine, Alchemy’s acupuncturist, Elisa, listens to you and your body to identify systems that are out of harmony in your physical, energetic, and emotional body and uses acupuncture and sound vibrations to help support a positive shift. Say hello to the chiropractor of your subtle body. The acupuncture at Alchemy, in addition to its physical and energetic benefits, actually plays a large community role. Community acupuncture is an open invitation to share a

82 | NOVEMBER 2015

sacred space with others on their path of well-being. Each class has a theme — stress, digestion, or energy building —that comes from the patterns, pain, emotional challenges, and goals of the community members. And while it’s tempting to be apprehensive of the needle aspect, the class opens with group meditation that’s so profound, you may just relax yourself right to sleep. In the stillness that follows, Elisa begins her customized energy work (similar to Reiki) and needle sequencing with needles no more threatening than a strand of hair. It’s a beautiful communal energy shift that has everyone sitting up with healthier systems.

THE MASSAGE Liv Tyler once said, “There is no definition of beauty, but when you can see someone’s spirit coming through, something unexplainable, that’s beautiful to me.” Our spirits are beautiful and pure and radiant and peaceful. But if your body isn’t feeling aligned (mind, body, spirit!), it’s difficult to feel balanced. I’m a big advocate for spa days—it’s so important to truly take some time to relax, rehydrate, and refocus on feeding your body good energy (and that goes far beyond

food)—so here I am, robed up in another spa. This spa’s massage room has, on one wall, a builtin, touch-screen remote for the room’s music and ambiance and, on the other, an exotic hanging lantern over a vast soaker tub. Beyond standard Swedish and deep tissue body work, they also offer Shiatsu, lymphatic, and abdominal massages, therapeutic soaks, wraps, and body polishes, as well as Float hydrotherapy and TheraVibe sessions paired with the Far Infrared Sauna treatments.

SBLIFEANDSTYLE.COM | 83

THE FACIAL The best thing about the body and facial treatments is how confidently they fit among the other healing sessions focused on mind and spirit. You wouldn’t catch 90-yearold Tibetan monks getting facials, but at Alchemy Arts, it’s part of the path to bliss. Spa treatments speak of a conscious commitment to yourself that will make all the difference in your transformation. With the equivalent rejuvenating effectiveness of that lantern-lit massage, the express facial was made for your lunch break. Utilizing everything from micro-currents and the healing vibration of crystals to Amazonian Elixir and organic exfoliants and peels, Alchemy tries to go beyond basic pampering to truly nourish your skin and senses. If you’re having an all-day spa retreat, I have to recommend scheduling your facial at the end of your day. Robin is a goddess of rejuvenation and I walked away with happy hydrated 84 | NOVEMBER 2015

skin that was nothing less than radiant. Even after a desaturating (but relaxing) dip in a glowing orb of watered down Epsom salt, emerging dried out like a bag of mixed fruit, I was just a few quick dollops, misty spritzes, and thoughtful pressure points away from skin hydration bliss. Can confirm: her super speedy, stand up express– express facial is top notch. Despite my hydration hiccup, their flotation IsoPod is actually a dream option if you have any unforgiving pain for which gravity shows no mercy or are craving an endorphins-induced dream state. Super-saturated with Epsom salt, the mere 12 inches of 93.5° water floats you effortlessly in a weightless, harmonious illusion of being suspended in the changing colors of the cosmos. No worries. It’s chill. You can also hit the lights and pretend you’re Sandra Bullock in Gravity for about 55 minutes, if you want to go there.

THE BEGINNING The light has transformed, gliding long and golden across the hallway. Sunlight has been a constant positive presence in this afternoon. As an intuitive future yogini once suggested to me, the sun salutation is an asana of accepting and embracing what the world has given to us and finding a way to let go of that energy with gratitude and enlightenment. In the sequence, the flow of energy starts in grounding poses that support you with the knowledge that you are not alone, the whole earth has your back; the movement from mountain pose into a back bend instantly liberates any weight on your shoulders, returning everything of yourself back out to the world. Thanking it, accepting it, embracing it. I feel hyper-aware of the 700 trillion volts of electricity (science + math) that have been stretched, shook, kneaded, hydrated, and realigned today, energizing my body, mind, and spirit. I’m at a level of gratitude, positive thinking, and sense of oneness that raises vibrations and radiates

joy. It’s how you want to feel walking out of a wellness center, with a glimmer of the powerful peace within us. Even when we are caught up in the hustle of every day, our lives remain a reflection of the world we are letting in. And right now, inside a sunny downtown retreat, there’s a community of healers with a spirit of intention welcoming those who seek well-being.

estled at the foothills of the Santa Ynez Mountains, one of the area’s most luxurious and romantic estates embodies the idyllic union of authentic French spirit and California coastal living. With breathtaking ocean and island views moments from the renowned San Ysidro Ranch, Montecito’s Upper and Lower Villages, Butterfly Beach, and miles of hiking trails, the area’s finest lifestyle amenities surround this private estate. Mountain peaks, ancient oaks, citrus trees, and a cobblestone motor court greet you just beyond the entry gates; the impressive architecture of the circa 1930s estate commands attention. Designed by noted architect Lutah Maria Riggs, with charming shutters, a slate roof and an alluring stone and blush stucco façade, the expansive main residence is reminiscent of an 18th century French country manor. Extensively remodeled in 2006, the home meets every modern standard while maintaining the exceptional architectural pedigree. But this is only the beginning. Stepping into the foyer through exquisite glass and iron doors, an exquisite galleria lined with Carrara marble floors and elegant crown molding meet the smooth curve of the domed ceiling. The formal living and dining rooms boast hand painted walls, herringbone parquet Mahogany wood floors, and a pair of marble fireplaces. French doors pocket into the walls and spill out onto the spacious terrace where the view is on brilliant display. An equally remarkable view and incredibly thoughtful design bring a true cook's kitchen into the this home, offering Carrara gold marble countertops, a soaring coffered ceiling, a center island with a breakfast bar beside a blazing fireplace, and, of course, French doors overlooking the glistening Pacific Ocean. Custom cabinetry, a Viking double oven and range, Miele espresso machine, warming drawer, and a striking copper farmhouse sink are a few of the luxurious amenities for the culinary connoisseur. Just outside, a warm breeze mingles fresh ocean air with sweet citrus creating a fairytale-like ambience for intimate sunset dinners or joyous midday brunches. Stone steps lead to the picturesque pool terrace, crowned by the beautifully appointed pool cabana. A generous lounge terrace surrounds the swimmer’s pool and spa and includes an outdoor fireplace, built-in Viking grill, and a seating area beneath a whimsical vine-covered pergola. A labyrinth of fanciful pathways winds through the alluring Lockwood

de Forest gardens while the mesmerizing fragrances of nearby rose gardens beckon for quiet morning strolls in the dancing light of an oak canopy. Beyond the lush lawn, traditional French gardens, and citrus grove lay gardener’s storage and the sport court. The breathtaking outdoors of this estate are meant to be celebrated and explored. For your guests, the home’s west wing hosts a glamorous powder room, handsome lounge with a private patio, and a truly luxurious guest suite with a spa-like bath, walkin closet, office, and a staff ’s suite with exterior access. Magnificent built-in bookshelves and a remarkable ceiling map depicting the city of light envelope the eastern rotunda. Away from the main residence is an incredibly charming guesthouse to make any chic Parisian feel right at home. Re-enter the house from the sport court and you will find yourself in a state-of-the-art home theater (with a wet bar and cinema-worthy snack bar), game room, in-home gym, and the temperature controlled wine cellar. Meander your way upstairs to discover the home’s expansive upper level. A large landing, perfect for casual reading, boasts ocean views, a beautiful wood floor, and connects the handsome office, two large bedroom suites, and the regal master suite. Cloaked in sumptuous Mahogany paneled walls with custom built-in bookshelves, the home’s primary office creates an exceptional space for quiet study. Two bedrooms, one with a private terrace, both boast south-facing windows that frame island views and flood the serene spaces with sunlight. Spacious walk-in closets provide ample storage and ensuite baths, finished in tile mosaics or glistening blue marble, offer privacy and tranquility. Not to be outdone by any room in the house, the elegant master suite is a lavish haven of romantic details and stunning views. Generous proportions are met with magnificent ocean and mountain views in the spectacular master bedroom. Rich wood floors, a tray ceiling, two custom-fitted walk-in closets, and a romantic fireplace join together to create a truly lavish escape with an unparalleled sense of luxury. The splendid master bathroom, with an oversized shower and peaceful, ocean-view soaking tub, complete this master retreat. From luxurious finishes with authentic French flavor to she-thought-of-everything modern amenities, only the natural beauty of the surrounding ocean and mountain panoramas match the impressive architectural provenance and enchanting landscape of this truly captivating Montecito estate.

SALON AND STYLE BAR MAKEUP by Cynthia

SKIN: MAKEUP FOREVER ULTA FOUNDATION

EYES: GLO MINERALS EYESHADOW IN KONA AND URBAN DECAY BLACK PENCIL EYELINER IN SMOKED OUT CHEEKS: BENEFIT HOOLA MATTE BRONZER LIPS: NYX LIPGLOSS IN TIRAMISU

HAIR: DAVINES DRY SHAMPOO DAVINES MEDIUM HOLD HAIRSPRAY

I started by applying Makeup Forever Ulta Foundation all over Brittany’s face. Next, for a sun-kissed glow, I used Benefit Hoola Matte Bronzer. For her brown smokey eye I used Glo Minerals Eyeshadow in Kona followed by Urban Decay Black Pencil Eyeliner in Smoked Out. I finished off her sophisticated look with NYX Lipgloss in Tiramisu.

HAIR by Lisa To get this soft, slightly beachy curl I started by allowing Brittany’s hair to fall at the natural part and then prepping it with Davines Dry Shampoo. Beginning at the nape and working in sections, I used a oneinch curling iron—doing a combination of curls and wrapping the hair around the iron. I rotated directions with the curls to encourage movement and fullness. I then used my hands to work through the curls and achieve the desired arrangement. I finished her look using Davines Medium Hold Hairspray to hold the curls and control the frizz— essential for being outside most of the day!
