Letter

from the

Editor This issue is all about contrast. From sea level to high altitudes, and city living to the backcountry, we did it all. In Let Go we drove down the Malibu coast, stopping at the water’s edge. The impending cliffs met the crashing waves and we felt like outlaws in my dad’s 1973 BMW. Then, soaring from 500 feet above ground, Take Flight looks down on the jagged edges of the Channel Islands. Mist rests above the vast blue water with the miniature size of the islands paling in comparison.

Pushing the city limits, we ventured out to Los Angeles, and received the celebrity treatment. With the elegance of The Ritz as our home base for a couple days, we journeyed out to run through the energetic city. In Downtown Girls, we captured the modern woman’s take on geometric street style. Once we left the concrete maze, we escaped north to Circle Bar B Ranch

for a country getaway. With traditional barbecues, a kindhearted staff and therapeutic amenities, it was a weekend of pure indulgence.

After returning to our local zip code, it was all about wellbeing. We sweat it out in Hot Power Fusion Yoga, and cleansed ourselves with Nikki Sharp’s 5-Day Detox. With The Beauty of Berries we took a deeper look into the incredible benefits of antioxidants on our skin and in Pass The Salt we experienced the healing power of a sodium-filled treatment. Now, calling all men and meat-lovers, I made sure there was something in this issue for everybody. We took a look inside a man’s fashion haven at Wolf ’s Head, and ate and drank with the elite at Lucky’s. With pages full of juxtaposition, I hope you are ready to “spring it on.”

T

wo years ago in a small Texas town, I bought my very first beautifully stitched cowboy boots. That pair of exquisite leather artwork has remained, untouched, on the top shelf of my picked-apart closet, just waiting for an excuse to bring out my inner cowgirl. Finally, today’s the day. All too eagerly, I pull them down and shove my feet inside, praying they still fit. Wishing I owned a pickup truck for the quick 30-minute drive north, I hop in my sedan and head up the rolling hills to Circle Bar B Guest Ranch. My partner-in-crime for the weekend turns up the country tunes and the sweet sound of southern twang takes us away. Soon the gravel crunches beneath my tires and I let

out a long repressed exhale: we’re here. Cabins with dark burgundy walls and crisp white trim surround me. I follow the signs leading to the “Ranch Office.” To my left, two smiling faces greet me. One is Kathy, the owner of this remarkable property. Instantly, I sense the aura of family and community. After a brief tour, we are led to our charming cabin and settle in. The clock strikes 5:00 p.m. and, almost hypnotically, we make our way over to the bar. Sitting on leather stools with our backs resting on smooth animal hide, we sip our lemon drops and whiskey sours. A massive stone fireplace looms behind us and the wooden walls give the sense that I’m in a real-life Lincoln Log Cabin. The sound of our chatter with a nearby couple and the bartender echoes through the rustic building.

SBLIFEANDSTYLE.COM | 31

Happy hour comes and goes in an instant, and a member of the closeknit staff announces that dinner is served. Only a few feet away, we enter a dining room lined with a steaming buffet and filled with tables draped in checkered cloths. The smell of barbecue captures my senses. With steamed vegetables, garlic bread, white beans, a baked potato, tri-tip, chicken, salad, and chocolate cake, there’s not an empty square inch on my two overfilled plates. A bottle of Ballard Lane Pinot Noir is set in front of me and I take a deep breath, looking at the food and wine I am about to devour. A grandmother and granddaughter, couples young and old, and best friends—all dining together at communal tables. This setup is exactly what the ranch is about: family. Once you come to Circle Bar B Ranch, you are forever connected. The ranch has been in Kathy’s family since 1939, and she and her brother Pat are the third generation to take over. The pride they have in Circle Bar B is pervasive, from the genuine excitement of their welcome to their utter attentiveness to their guests. The guestbook in the main cabin says it all. Handwritten notes spray the pages in an array of penmanship. I read the words “We cannot wait to come back” countless times, and I chuckle at the children’s adoring reviews. The ranch receives nothing but the highest praise from new and returning guests alike. Although I have been at this oasis for a mere four hours, this slice of heaven has already touched me.

Darkness peers in through the surrounding windows and I look down at the plates I have cleared all too quickly. With half a bottle of wine left, we decide to keep the night going We venture over to the game room, and put our billiard, Ping-Pong, and foosball skills to the test. The competition intensifies, and we retreat to the jacuzzi in order to salvage what friendship we have left. The duet of the frogs and wind through the trees provides background music to the swirling water and quiet banter. Finally, with heavy eyelids, we retire to our cottage. Under substantial blankets, I let the silence and tranquility swallow me and I drift off in preparation for the day ahead. Our purposefully left-open curtains frame the sunlight as it pours in at 6:30 a.m.. Naturally awakened, we head down to the stables to watch the horses in the early morning light. We think we’re getting an early start to the day, but that is put to shame when we find at least five cowboys already hard at work. My senses soar with the sound of clinking metal, the scent of leather and the sight of a herd of horses. We exchange a few polite greetings and let the wranglers get back to work as we head up to breakfast. Homemade fluffy pancakes, savory bacon and flavorful eggs cover my plate, and I enter my second food coma. Luckily our horseback ride is not scheduled until 11:30 a.m., so we have a solid two hours to digest. To pass the time, we head up the carpeted staircase into the lofted library. We each snag a well-worn book and step outside onto the terrace. The thick greenery and the whispering fountain offer a nice change of pace from the concrete city life I have grown accustomed to. This cocoon of pure relaxation is nothing short of therapeutic. My phone is off, I have nowhere to be and there is no work to be done; this is the escape I have been reading about. I’m only 30 minutes from my home and the bustling city, but I feel like I am light-years away. Rejuvenated, I hear the clopping of hooves, and with a glance at the clock, we bid adieu to the main house.

SBLIFEANDSTYLE.COM | 35

We try to walk down to the stables in our best cowboy swagger, bow-legged and all, but we’re outdone by the real deal. Country charm oozes from these cheery and good-humored men. After we sign our lives away and take some good cityfolk teasing, Jack the wrangler sends us down to meet our horses and guide for the day. Now, I bet that almost every woman has dreamt about living out her cowboy fantasy, and I am no different, so when Rick saunters over and introduces himself as our guide, I’m a little rosy-cheeked. Let’s just say he is proof that the fantasy does indeed exist. Sadly, I’m quickly put in my place when within minutes he tells me he’s “Old enough to be my father.” (I’d like to note, however, that this is completely unprovoked.) With my imagination put to rest, we continue up the trail. As a horseback rider myself, I don’t know how you can beat a trail ride up to a stunning view with laughter and amusement the whole way. No matter your skill level, the Circle Bar B Stables allow you to take rides for either 1.5 hours or a half-day. We choose the lighter option, although upon returning to the stables I immediately regret that decision. Rick’s stories of guests, from celebrities to wedding parties to proposals, could have continued for hours and I would’ve been all ears. The moment my feet touch the ground, a wave of melancholy pours over me. My experience is coming to an end. I try to delay my departure as long as possible, but with a butterflyinducing handshake, I say goodbye to my guide. I have officially been on the property for a mere 21 hours, but I already feel connected to the entire staff. Kathy’s comforting smile, the gregarious bartenders and the entertaining wranglers have all seamlessly worked together to provide us with the best possible visit. We had moments of peaceful solitude and exciting exploration. In my experience, there are two types of weekend getaways: the one filled with laughter and adventure, and the one focused on introspection and spirituality. Circle Bar B Ranch is both.

DETOXIFIED Nikki Sharp’s delicious 5-Day Detox ensures a healthier mind and body.

O

ver the last few months I’ve been attending countless bottomless mimosa brunches and frequently ordering Chinese take-out. Even though my eyes light up with excitement seeing the delivery man at my front door, that feeling of delight shortly wears off and guilt kicks in. Since realizing that those tasty indulgences leave me feeling guilty and weighted down, I decide to find a way to consume delicious foods that will leave me feeling confident and healthy! I was recently introduced to Nikki Sharp, a model and author of her new book, The 5-Day Real Food Detox. After talking with her, I was ready to find out what makes her cleanse work as opposed to others I’ve tried in the past. And really, her plan is quite simple; eat real, raw, nutrient-enriched foods. So that’s what I set out to do.

She’s laid out dietary alternatives that help me better understand the difference between what my body might be ‘craving’ and what my body ‘needs.’

Leaving my apartment on a sunny Monday morning, I head to Trader Joe’s and fill my basket to the brim with fresh produce, berries and proteins. It’s important for me to start this cleanse at the beginning of the week with the thought that I will be able to avoid tempting invitations for a quick pizza and glass of wine.

LOVE PANCAKES

40 | APRIL 2016

Having stocked my fridge with everything I need, I am ready to dive right in! I flip to Nikki’s breakfast recipes and, of course, choose the pancakes. Whipping together a small batch, I combine ¼ cup of raw oats, 1 egg, 1 teaspoon of cinnamon, and ¼ teaspoon of turmeric. I drop a bit of olive oil and batter on the pan and prepare my toppings; 1 cup of berries and 12 almonds get poured onto my cutting board. I then load my pancakes and warmed berries onto an oriental plate and garnish the dish with fresh mint.

Sitting down, I take a quick picture of this beautiful dish (if it’s not on Instagram did it really ever happen?) and take my first bite. These pancakes are sweet and hearty, while still light on the belly. After cleaning up my morning mess, I prep snacks to take with me for the day. Following Nikki’s easy snacking essentials makes this fairly simple. I grab all my hummus making ingredients and begin. I toss chickpeas, spinach, tahini, lemon, olive oil, garlic, turmeric, and pepper in my blender and give it a whirl. Anyone will agree, it can be tricky avoiding processed foods when living a busy, uncontrollable lifestyle but having these healthy snacks on hand when you’re feeling a bit hungry will keep you from grabbing that bag of chips off the shelf. Trust me, I’m an expert on this now! Having never completed any diet or juice cleanse I’ve tried in the past, Nikki’s meal plan makes it enjoyable for me to make better decisions day-by-day. Overall, it’s a lot less complicated than I expected. My personal favorite recipe in her book is the cauliflower pizza. Based with a cauliflower almond meal crust, it is topped with juicy tomatoes, garlic, zucchini, mushrooms, and a dash of pepper. This dish makes my mouth water. I pack my hot pizza, grab my lemon water and blanket and head to the park to enjoy those last moments of sun. Feeling the fresh breeze against my skin, I sit here watching the neighborhood dogs run through the fields below me and enjoy every last bite of that pizza, guilt-free.

SBLIFEANDSTYLE.COM | 41

I’m not saying this is easy, but it’s left my mind and body feeling more confident than ever.

As the week continues, I study Nikki’s advice. She’s laid out dietary alternatives that help me better understand the difference between what my body might be ‘craving’ and what my body ‘needs.’ Before, it was routine for me to have a spoonful of coconut ice cream before going to sleep. Now I’ve replaced this habit with a few blackberries, allowing my body to receive the chromium it was craving all along. I’m not saying this is easy, but it’s left my mind and body feeling more confident than ever. I am now more knowledgeable of how certain minerals affect my body; instead of throwing salt in many of my dishes, I simply stick to using black pepper—it’s helped me truly enjoy the taste of the foods I am eating. What I love most about Nikki Sharp’s detox is that it’s not limiting. I am less eager to order the pancakes at brunch or order take-out. Instead I spend more time in my own kitchen, which in return saves me calories and money! I am more confident in my shopping rituals now, knowing just what to pick out and what to avoid. Putting down that loaf of bread that played an essential role in my breakfasts, I load my basket with almonds, broccoli, beans, and grapes. This detox has left me feeling lighter in my step and happier even in the toughest circumstances. As Nikki suggests in her book, if you’re ever feeling like you might cheat, take a walk outside and remember why you started in the first place. It works every time.

T

he State Street Core Power building is not only aesthetically pleasing—with a stone facade and beautiful courtyard, but also a nice introduction to the relief of hot yoga on an overcast morning. Having done yoga before, and knowing how liberating it is, I am eager to try Hot Power Fusion Yoga. Holly, my instructor, excitedly welcomes me and gives me a mat and a towel. I enter the warm room, place my mat on the wood floor, take child’s pose, and begin taking deep breaths. Thirty minutes into the class, my calm state is heightened and I am dripping with sweat. I push myself to do the chair pose with some squatting; it takes all of my focus not to collapse.

This class is not only a physical challenge because of the temperature, but also a mental one. It’s about training your mind to find the strength to work through the heat and reach a point of relaxation. Different from yoga I have done in the past, the added pressure of the heat mixed with the discovery of my natural breathing pattern allows me to concentrate on flowing from one yoga pose to the next. The room is hot, but I feel light and clean. Hot yoga is a therapeutic and naturally detoxifies the body. The intensity of the difficult moves coupled with the heat elevates my heart rate, but allows me to release stress by sweating. Core Power offers a welcoming environment for this holistic cleansing experience. Throughout the class I do not feel pressured to achieve something my body is not prepared for, but encouraged to reach the level I am comfortable with. With Holly’s calm enthusiasm, I challenge myself to try poses that are new to me, like the cobra, lying on my pelvis and lifting my upper body back. The heat and sweat clear my head organically. I leave the class, sixty minutes has passed, and I am refreshed. As I walk to my car I appreciate the cold fresh oxygen I’m deeply breathing in.

I

t seems to me that the more our world evolves, the more we seek the time-tested advice from our past. We dust off old books looking for re-discovered wisdom, and we stock our cupboards with ancient grains hoping for a health breakthrough. But before we can correctly pronounce the word ‘quinoa,’ we’ve unavoidably moved on to our next fascination. Fully aware of this trend, I am going to claim in bold confidence that I have zeroed in on the ultimate ingredient that’s stood the test of time. While casually walking down State Street one afternoon, I decide to take a second look at “Salt.” Its sign, characterized by various pinks and

an organic-shaped etching of a rocky mountain, happened to particularly catch my eye. I peek over and notice an inviting staircase leading downward and the beginnings of a beautiful retail space at its base. Blame it on an inherent spirit of inquiry but I can’t help but tiptoe myself down to examine. As it turns out, Salt is an awe-inspiring hidden gem. Offering more than just a fanciful retail space, Salt features two salt caves, a variety of spa treatments, classes, and events that celebrate the healing benefits of the resident pink Himalayan salt, dating back over 250 million years. Adding beauty, health, cleanliness, and flavor to our lives, Salt is Santa Barbara’s own center for apothecary magic—and I want in.

SBLIFEANDSTYLE.COM | 49

Chava, the manager of Salt, meets me with a warm greeting, and we head to the entrance of the largest Himalayan salt cave in North America. “The largest? In all of North America?” I repeat back to her as if I’ve misheard. She nods with a smile and continues to tell me about the natural wonder. I pull back the curtain and my jaw drops; the cave is what dreams are made of. Completely bedazzled in crystalline pink, the walls, floor and entire ceiling are studded with the jewel-like mineral. I take a timid first step inside, and I bury my toes into a white sand beach of finely-ground Himalayan salt. I peer around the room in fascination; zero-gravity lounge chairs, selective lighting and calming music await in peaceful elegance. Directly above, hundreds of salt stalactites make up the quartz-lined ceiling. The cave effortlessly displays every expression of salt known to the geological world. I am in a trance. I decidedly ready myself for a treatment and its complimentary cave session when Chava reveals the secret of the caves. Like a crowning jewel of the entire experience, I learn that the air is infused with microparticles of salt that can be absorbed through the skin and deep into the lungs, promoting healing through a process called halotherapy. I soak up every word because the air feels like it’s followed a fresh rain—pristine and calm—lighter than you could imagine. I drink it in. The sensation is inarguably novel. My heavenly visit to Salt continues with a Himalayan Salt Scrub and Massage. My massage therapist Catherine ushers me to the back, unveiling a secret wing of Salt through a hallway peppered with tranquil candlelight. She points out the Salt Lounge and three available spa rooms. Passing by the lounge, I notice two women chatting quietly and sipping on spa water. They appear to be sharing in the excitement of their upcoming treatments while allowing their bare feet to play in the salty sand crystals. I’m asked to select one of two divine body scrubs. The added medicinal benefit of the Peppermint and Tea Tree Himalayan calls out to me despite my initial intrigue with the Sweet Almond and Coconut and its obvious decadence. The warm granules of massage salt are placed on my lower back, and I practically melt, forgetting the dilemma completely. She alternates between using the coarse grains as a gentle massage and then with more vigor to exfoliate my skin. This

50 | APRIL 2016

technique, mixed with the aroma of the scrub and the overall quality of the massage, goes far beyond my expectation. Catherine focuses the grit on the areas of my skin crying for extra attention like my hands, elbows and feet. The scrub continues to soften in a refreshingly pure way, not masked with artificial fragrance or unnecessary goo. It’s followed with a deep tissue massage, and the mineralizing duo is perfect: deeply therapeutic, moisturizing yet clean—a combination truly unique to the organic benefits of everyone’s favorite mineral. Flute music dances quietly in the air and the scent of tea tree oil caps off a flawless experience. With improved posture and a lightened heart, I seemingly glide out of the massage room and settle into a chair in the large salt cave for my 45 minutes of sweet relaxation. It’s deeply meditative—my mind quiets and slips into a state of complete serenity. Picturing the micro-healing benefits of halotherapy swirling around the air and into my cells, perhaps through a process akin to osmosis, causes me to sink even deeper into my zero-gravity chair. The only thought that seems to cross my mind is how I can replicate this type of restorative therapy at home. A visit to the retail section is in order. The soap bars are the first to catch my eye as I admiringly peruse the products. Each salt brick is simply elegant with a rustic beauty that could adorn a coffee table or bookshelf. Whimsical arrangements of crushed salts, lip balms and mineral drinks show off its versatility. I meander to the back of the boutique where cooking slabs, room sprays and cozy crystal lamps further convince me that every home could use this type of sophisticated, earthy charm. With my selections in tow, I thank Catherine and Chava for my afternoon of unparalleled revitalization. They’re gracious, allowing their beautiful spirit and dewey skin to glow, which I fully attribute to their daily dose of halotherapy. They invite me back for an upcoming yoga class, and my mind delights simply at the thought. I intentionally savor the last few breaths of the infused oxygen and leave with nothing less than a soul rejuvenation. It appears as though my newfound appreciation for the multifaceted mineralized gem has secured my place in ancient history. I think I’ll celebrate by decorating my bookshelf with its pink elegance. *

L.A.

DREAM Written by Robin Berger

I

glance at my dashboard and see that it’s a whopping 85 out. I get a tinge of summer nostalgia, only to realize it’s February and this heat wave won’t last into next week. I’m speeding down the 101 South, daydreaming about the bustling atmosphere of Los Angeles. There’s something special about L.A.’s eclectic energy, the type that makes people’s dreams come true. It’s a city that incorporates multiple sports identities with a touch of upscale cocktail lounges, art and music venues, and award winning restaurants. An hour later, I step foot at the center of it all. “Welcome to The Ritz Carlton L.A. Live,” the valet utters. Time for my own Los Angeles dreams to come true. On an ordinary sunny afternoon.

66 | APRIL 2016

SBLIFEANDSTYLE.COM | 67

I enter the glass doors to The Ritz’s modern interior and make my way to the front desk. I lock in my surroundings and am drawn to the arrangement of yellow, pink and pearl roses. Four dozen in one simplistic case to be exact. The abstract furniture and heightened ceilings of black marble remind me I’m in a sleek structure that soars 54 levels above the city. This luxurious haven brings a sleek and sophisticated flavor to the entertainment district known as L.A. Live. After sipping a lemon infused iced tea in the elevator lobby, I set foot on the 23rd floor. Opening the dark mahogany door to my room, I’m greeted by a gift and handwritten letter. “Welcome to Downtown Los Angeles Robin, we hope you enjoy your time here. Don’t hesitate to reach out if you need anything.” The suite offers just the right amount of glamour and chic California elegance with contemporary furniture and avant-garde lamps. I detect a velutinous robe in the closet that has me contemplating the opulent tub covered in an ombre of gray tiles. The green tea detoxifying bath salts are already calling my name. Walking to the giant window, I awe at the sweeping view overlooking the Microsoft Theatre and the skyline of L.A., a picturesque scene that elicits a second take.

68 | APRIL 2016

I drop into The Ritz-Carlton Club Lounge, just two doors down. It captures the spirit of L.A. Live’s atmosphere; everything surrounding me amplifies its magnetic vitality. I select a gluten-free chocolate chip cookie from the table in the foyer and take a delicate bite. Continuous food and beverages are presented throughout the day so I meander around the lounge and grab a glass of Sonoma Cutrer Chardonnay and a plate of hors d’ oeuvres to nibble on. The shrimp cocktail bedded under a pineapple red pepper salsa highlights the buttery aftertaste of the white wine, while the simplistic taste of the caprese salad displays itself like an abstract work of art. I polish my plate off with a taste of an orange pepper, bacon and pesto pastry. If stomachs smiled, mine would be gleaming. Speaking of dreams, I couldn’t have picked a better time to infiltrate myself above the crowds of Los Angeles, because the assembly of the 2016 Grammy awards is underway. The impressive views give me an unobstructed perspective of the chaos surrounding the preparation of an award show of this magnitude. As I nestle in my California king bed, I can only think to myself that the Grammy stars might end their night in this same extravagant hotel. There’s a piece of me that feels like one of them, but the only thing separating that from being my reality is I can’t sing.

I open my eyes revitalized and my first thought before even checking my phone is that, ironically, I remember having a dream I could sing. When my dream dissipates into thin air I notice I have a clear view of the STAPLES Center, where the Grammys will be in a few short days and I laugh to myself, knowing I’ll pocket the dream from last night as an amusing one. I stay in my fluffy robe for a little too long but finally make it to the Club Lounge for breakfast. I walk into the all-encompassing view of Los Angeles and stare out onto the morning traffic. I think each one of those people would be slightly jealous of me, standing there watching them sit on the 405. I make a bagel with chive cream cheese, tomato, onion, and avocado and sip my vanilla latte while gazing at the sun peeking over the mountains in the distance. I wish I could start every morning like this. It isn’t easy to find the courage to leave the lounge, let alone the hotel, but Santa Barbara is calling me home. I make my way down to the Ritz lobby and before departing out of the glass doors I grasp just how well this luxurious hotel incorporates the urban buzz of Los Angeles. I found a little inkling of my dreams in L.A. Live and as I drive north, windows down, I sing along to my XM radio, off key and all.

Mr. Lucky Cocktail

It’s a treasure, and it has a rare sophistication that creates a distinctive energy. Tonight I know I’ll feel like a very lucky girl.

I

t’s Thursday night and I’m ready for a cocktail or two, because nothing starts the weekend off better than letting it happen a day early. I eagerly step out to reach the romantically lit sign that greets me above the entrance of Lucky’s. The canvas covered space is passionately pulling me in. The bold fireplace is burning and the cream walls are varnished with vintage photographs of sports and movie stars from the 1940’s and 50’s. This rich history elicits a charm that stands the test

of time. This is why people come here. It’s a treasure, and it has a rare sophistication that creates a distinctive energy. Tonight I know I’ll feel like a very lucky girl. This quaint spot epitomizes the message that the harder one works the more luck one has. The white linen tablecloths coat the table and the thick leather chairs compliment the dark wood surroundings. I’m seated and am told to roll up my sleeves, order a martini and wait to be served. So I do just that.

Romanian Steak

Jumbo Shrimp Cocktail

The server approaches me with a warm welcome and the gleaming antique atmosphere has me enamored with my reality. I feel like I’ve traveled back in time when I’m told my table was Louise Latham’s iconic spot. I may not have been an actress in any of Hitchcock’s films, but I feel as glamorous as Louise. “What do you recommend?” I inquire. “I don’t necessarily recommend anything. I’d tell you to get what your stomach is hungry for,” he expresses. The options are endless, but I know one thing is for certain, everything sounds incredible.

74 | APRIL 2016

I start with the Levrier cocktail, which mimics a vibrant sunset, except no sunsets I gaze at consist of Absolut Ruby Red Vodka, Aperol, fresh grapefruit juice, and sparkling wine. While perusing the menu, the Levrier quenches my thirst and I’m head over heels in love with this potion. Now it’s time for a tough decision, but I make a choice that quells every tinge of hunger I have. To kick it off, a burrata mozzarella with local tomatoes, arugula and basil appears. My eyes smile at the delectable presentation and my server explains that the bread, imported from Italy, is dangerous. And oh is he right.

Burrata Mozzarella

As the soft burrata vanishes within minutes, so does the fresh basket of pillow-like bread. I order the Lucky Lemon Drop to accompany me through the flavors of the 10 oz. Prime Romanian Steak. I see that below each cocktail there’s a quote. “The problem with the world is that everyone is a few drinks behind.” Humphrey Bogart must have known I needed this Lemon Drop. The USDA Prime is chosen from Newport Meat Company, which hand-selects their meat from 50% of beef available. This selection is carefully sought out for its rare marbling,

aging and enhanced flavor. The chef simply seasons with salt and fresh ground black pepper before searing the meat on a 1500 degree broiler. The first bite coats my palate with its full flavored tenderness. I dip the next bite in the creamy sauce and the mouth-watering meat goes down like butter. Each piece I grip is a cut of well-balanced perfection with dense flavors that heighten the garlic and black pepper coating. I devour the rest of my Romanian steak and find a slice of heaven in the Gruyere cheese hash brown potatoes. The potatoes are mixed with caramelized onions and melted cheese. If I recall the best hash browns I’ve ever had, these beat them by a landslide.

Salty Turtle Sundae

76 | APRIL 2016

I don’t remember the last time I was this delightfully full, but I’m already thinking about dessert. I order the Salty Turtle Sundae and my 5-year-old sugar-crazed self is thanking me. The oozing caramel peeks through the vanilla bean ice cream that’s topped off with whipped cream and candied pecans. The dark chocolate fudge is poured over the top, drizzling into the center. If this sundae were in a contest it would win 1st prize. The candy-coated flavors make for gigantic spoonfuls. Calories don’t count when something tastes this good. Post indulging, The friendly staff gives me a tour. I note that Jane Russell, Andy Williams, David Crosby, and Neil Young all made their mark on the restaurant. I make my way to an autographed older football photograph with Troy Akiman, Michael Irvin and Emmitt Smith, saying how the food was exceptional. My brothers would be jealous. Whether you’ve known about Lucky’s for years or you are vacationing in Santa Barbara, it’s a restaurant you can’t go to just once. The remarkable staff and divine food leaves you with a fulfillment like no other, and the ambiance is a storybook of its own history. Lucky’s delivers you an experience they know you deserve after a day of working hard for your own luck.

and decorated with artwork from local and renowned artists. From the old-school theater seating to the custom video-arcade cabinet. Wolf ’s Head maintains a simple layout of their shop; keeping usually only one or two articles of each item on display. Brands like Carhartt Work in Progress and Levi’s Vintage Clothing are some of the classic American companies that can be found in the store, while Pendleton Woolen Mills and Nudie Jeans are some of the more exclusive, yet reputable brands that they carry.

Towards the center of the space you will find a single, classic barber’s chair. Richie’s Barber Shop from Montecito and Wolf ’s Head teamed up to make the store a onestop shop. A man can come to the store to get a new outfit and a haircut before the big night out. With Issac as the inhouse barber, a loyal group of men come in to keep their mop looking crisp. Luxury pomades and other hair products are sold in the store, adding yet another reason why Wolf ’s Head is a man’s go-to retailer. our skin is your primary defense against the elements; it is the first thing people see and the last thing we tend to take care of. With the constant wear and tear we put ourselves through, it is imperative that we give our skin the necessary nutrients to revive itself. Antioxidants are the ideal safeguard. They come from many sources, such as healthy eating, but only a small percentage of consumed antioxidants actually reach the skin. This is primarily because they act internally in the body. Antioxidants can also be found in skin care products such as masks, moisturizers, cleansers, serums, and by receiving professional skin treatments. When using contemporary applications, they should contain a potent assortment of stable antioxidants so that they have the power to stop free radical damage. All antioxidants protect against environmental damage. Daily aggressors such as the sun, air pollution, stress, and cigarette smoke are consistently harming our skin. These aggressors trigger a chain

reaction of oxidation and inflammation, which lead to the breakdown of tissue. The damage eventually results in hyperpigmentation, redness, fine lines, and less supple skin. Antioxidants fight these unwanted effects. When it comes to antioxidants, the more the merrier! The skin is actually healthier when using a cocktail blend of effective antioxidants. Skin Prophecy Clinic and Skin Care Institute has taken this to heart and brought antioxidants to the next level with a clinical skin care line that has been formulated to aggressively treat a variety of damages. The following three berry puree blends from Skin Prophecy include the optimal combinations to give your skin the pampering it deserves. They all share common properties found in fruit (especially in the skin) and vegetables and are polyphenolic falvonoid compounds known as anthocyanins.

Cherry Drop Puree Enzyme Cherry Drop contains 17 different antioxidant compounds that help the body fight aging. The anthocyanin (red pigment) in cherries strengthens connective tissue, which is incredibly important in maintaining healthy skin. Lactic acid is added as a twist to the enzyme for extra exfoliation and hydration. The arbutin and kojic in the enzyme also help to lighten hyperpigmentation.

BENEFITS:

• Antibacterial properties remove toxins from the blood and fight bacteria trapped under the skin. • Minimizes fine lines and wrinkles • Treats all grades of acne • Lactic acid alpha hydroxy hydrates and exfoliates, reducing wrinkles and hyperpigmentation. • Arbutin, a natural plant-based derivative of hydroquinone, brightens skin and blocks epidermal melanin. • Kojic acid, derived from Japanese mushroom, is a skin lightener.

Blueberry Smoothie Blueberries contain more than a dozen vitamins and minerals but are most admired for their wrinkle-busting antioxidants. To take it up a notch, there is added glycolic and salicylic in the Blueberry Smoothie enzyme.

BENEFITS:

• Vitamin A balances out oil levels, helps texture, fine lines, and pore size. • Vitamin C strengthens blood vessels and stimulates new cell growth. • Antifungal and antiviral properties • Glycolic-alpha hydroxy improves texture, reduces pore size, and lightens pigmentation. • Salicylic-beta hydroxy provides exfoliation, reduces inflammation, clears pore activity, alleviates fine lines and wrinkles, and stimulates new cell growth.

82 | APRIL 2016

Raspberry Blast Raspberries are the leading source of ellagic acid and contain high amounts of compounds that have significant amounts of cancer fighting properties.

BENEFITS:

• Reduces solar keratosis (age spots) and actinic keratosis (sun damaged areas that are more prone to develop skin cancers) • Improves capillary blood flow • Natural source of salicylic • Reduces scar formation • Keeps skin supple • Antibacterial and antiviral properties The real beauty in these blends comes from their highperformance treatments that are highly therapeutic, effective and result orientated. Your skin will have more clarity, a smoother texture and a beautiful glow once you implement antioxidants into your skincare regimen.

guide to

antioxidants Photographed by Riley Yahr Written by Theresa Borgatello, Life & Nutrition Coach

E

veryday we make choices that affect our bodies in a multitude of ways, and being conscious of these affects can have both short and long-term benefits. A diet high in antioxidants is one of the simplest ways to reduce the risk of many diseases, including heart disease, certain cancers, and some degenerative diseases. The best sources of antioxidants are found in fruits and vegetables. This said, because harsh chemicals have destroyed the quality of our soil and our fruits and vegetables are now trucked across the country and flown across the world, they are not as nutrient-dense as they were for our ancestors. For this reason, it is my strong belief that additional supplementation is needed. Also, whenever possible, eat organic and grass-fed.

84 | APRIL 2016

The foods that contain the highest antioxidant levels are:

• allium sulphur compounds – leeks, onions and garlic • anthocyanins – eggplant, grapes and berries • beta-carotene – pumpkin, mangoes, apricots, carrots, spinach, and parsley • catechins – tea • copper – seafood, lean meat, milk, and nuts • cryptoxanthins – red capsicum, pumpkin and mangoes • flavonoids – tea, green tea, citrus fruits, red wine, onion, and apples • indoles – cruciferous vegetables such as broccoli, cabbage, and cauliflower • isoflavonoids – soybeans, tofu, lentils, peas, and milk • lignans – sesame seeds, bran, whole grains, and vegetables • lutein – corn and green, leafy vegetables like spinach • lycopene – tomatoes, pink grapefruit and watermelon • manganese – seafood, lean meat, milk, and nuts • polyphenols – thyme and oregano • selenium – seafood, offal, lean meat, brazil nuts, and whole grains • vitamin A – liver, sweet potatoes, carrots, milk, and egg yolks • vitamin C – oranges, blackcurrants, kiwifruit, mangoes, broccoli, spinach, capsicum, and strawberries • vitamin E – vegetable oils (such as wheatgerm oil), avocados, nuts, seeds, and whole grains

• zinc – seafood, lean meat, milk, and nuts

It is very important to understand that while all of these foods are rich in antioxidants, some of them are not recommended for certain individuals based on bio-individuality. Additionally, if your mental, emotional and spiritual health is strong, your physical well-being is much more likely to cooperate. If any part of your being is compromised, it is vital to look at each one of your systems in order to bring your whole body back to into a state of balance and harmony. *

I

t’s golden hour just off the Santa Barbara coast. That perfect moment between afternoon and sunset when long shadows begin to creep across the landscape and warm golden light infuses everything with an ethereal and elevated quality. I’m sailing through the sky at 110 knots some 300 feet above the ocean floor. I’m on a beeline for Anacapa Island. It’s vignetted by a subtle haze and set against the horizon with a rich blue ocean and light wispy clouds. This is the closest I’ve been to the Channel Islands and each passing moment brings me that much closer.

SBLIFEANDSTYLE.COM | 87

88 | APRIL 2016

SBLIFEANDSTYLE.COM | 89

To my left is a four foot expanse where there was once a door; the glare from windows would decrease the quality of photographs. Little gusts of wind tap at me periodically but I’m surprised by the lack of turbulence or vibration. I’ve traveled in a helicopter before but never has it felt like this. Never has the onboard comfort matched that of a luxury sedan. The only things keeping me from flying out the exposed door are my seat belt and a six inch stopper at my feet. Yet I’ve never felt more at ease. Nanco Helicopters Founder and Chief Pilot Taylor Nancarrow is giving me tidbits of information as we wander through the sky. His control of the helicopter is organic as if the entire craft is an extension of himself. They work in unison. With the effortlessness at which we travel, safety is the last thing on my mind. “Whale,” he suddenly exclaims. His narrative about whale migrations through the channel couldn’t have been timed better. In a matter of moments he finds four spouts. We maintain our altitude, not wanting to inhibit the travel of the animals below. The same

90 | APRIL 2016

breeze I feel on my face is blowing across the surface of the ocean, making it difficult to pick anything out. With my eyes focused on the ocean I see several bursts of water, even from this vantage point the plumes become impossible to miss. I’m being serenaded by the calm almost otherworldly serenity of this moment. Has hovering at 500 feet ever been so comfortable and easy? As we close in on the Channel Islands my shutter is clicking repeatedly. I have to remind myself to be present. For me this once in a lifetime opportunity has to be appreciated in every way possible. Taylor’s narrative is expansive and informative yet lacks the trepidation of flight tour dialogue, his explanations and tone openly welcome my interjections. In its most natural form this is a conversation. As we circle around the southern point of Anacapa we see the coast littered with white dots, thousands of seabirds use the island as a nesting ground due to the lack of predators. The southern coast also boasts an active lighthouse, which was built in 1932, and Arch Rock, a grand and captivating arch set just off the southern tip of the island.

As we gain altitude, Anacapa stretches below us and Santa Cruz Island becomes more and more apparent on the horizon. Unlike Anacapa, which has one primary ridge, Santa Cruz’s 96 square miles has two mountain ranges, a large central valley and 77 miles of rugged coastline. It’s no wonder it’s been coined “miniature California.” The land we pass over makes my heart sing. In my life few moments have left me completely spellbound. Both captivated and overwhelmed. The perfect harmony when your experience overcomes your expectations. Rugged mountains, countless valleys and a vibrant green landscape lit by a low lying sun has me enshrined in the beauty of the islands.

up into one moment. There isn’t an explosion of color or an out-of-body transcendence to this sunset. Yet this moment couldn’t be more complete. As we traverse eastward along the coastline our voices are mute and we are enabled to fully embrace the tranquility of hovering at 700 feet with the ocean, an island and the remnants of the sun as our companions.

As the sun dips lower we tip our nose northbound, we bypass Santa Rosa and head for San Miguel Island. A bright orange sun dramatically backlights the smaller island. The majority of the surface is dark. A shadow cast against a rich vibrant orange sky. As dramatic as this moment may appear, it feels light and easy. A subtle balance of beauty, drama and calm. I’ve coined myself a connoisseur of sunsets. I’ve chased them all over the Western United States, into Alaska and throughout the Pacific Northwest. For me sunsets are the culmination of a day’s events. Everything you’ve experienced over 10 hours wrapped

Before we can finish our flight we are asked to momentarily wait off shore. Hovering at 300 feet, the damp, salty wind tickles my face, offering me a moment’s respite from the somewhat out-of-body experience of flying over the Channel Islands with Nanco Helicopters. In the last few minutes I’ve curtailed my life’s best memories down and this experience has just been placed near the top. I take one final look over my shoulder, through the exposed doorway, and see a sliver of light, a last bit of color to carry me forward and prepare me for whichever life’s best memory might come next. *

We chase the last bits of light back to the Santa Barbara coast, the lights of the city illuminating our course home. Void of tour jargon, the remainder of our flight is in silence. My eyes are once again fixed on the ocean. It’s rolling and calm. Just out of reach yet ever-present.

DISH IT UP A simple monthly recipe, to try at home, from our team to you.

Savory Tarts & Melty Goat Cheese Medallions

SAVORY TARTS Yield: 6

Ingredients: 1 sheet frozen puff pastry, thawed 9 ounces ham, diced 3 green onions, thinly sliced 5 eggs 1/2 cup plain yogurt 1/2 cup milk Salt and pepper 6 tbsp shredded cheddar cheese

Directions: Heat oven to 375°. Generously spray tart pans with pan release Place them on a parchment-lined sheet pan.

94 | APRIL 2016

Divide puff pastry into 6 even segments. Press the puff pastry into each of the tart pans, pushing it up the sides and across the middle. Refrigerate until ready to assemble the tarts. In a small skillet, heat 1 tablespoon of olive oil. Sauté the ham in the olive oil until lightly browned. Add the green onions and sauté until just wilted. Remove mixture from the heat. In a small mixing bowl, whisk together the eggs, yogurt and milk. Add a generous pinch of salt and pepper. Whisk to combine. To assemble the tarts, add 1 tbsp of cheddar cheese to each tart shell. Evenly distribute the ham mixture across the tarts. Evenly distribute the custard filling across the tarts shells (about 3 ounces per tart). Bake tarts for 24 minutes, rotating halfway through.

DISH IT UP

GOAT CHEESE MEDALLIONS Yield: 12

In a small mixing bowl, combine the egg whites and water. Place the breadcrumbs in another small mixing bowl.

Ingredients: 1 11-ounce log goat cheese, cold 2 egg whites + 1 tbsp water 1 cup bread crumbs 8 tbsp unsalted butter, divided, for pan frying

Directions: Prepare a sheet pan lined with parchment paper. Portion the goat cheese into 12 even portions. Create patties using the palm of your hands.

Dip each patty into the egg whites, coating both sides completely, then into the breadcrumbs, again, coating them completely. Place breaded patties on the prepared sheet pan. Refrigerate for 15 minutes. Melt 2 tbsp butter in a small skillet over medium high heat. Working with 6 patties at a time, pan-fry the patties for about 1 -1 ½ minutes on each side, achieving a nice brown crust on both sides. Between batches, carefully wipe the pan out with paper towels and start again by melting the butter. Serve warm with fresh greens and vinaigrette.
