Biblical Animals

Hi kids! Last summer, I went on a “goat walk” at a nearby farm. The farmers, who have more than two dozen goats, a few Icelandic horses and some alpacas, invite the community in for fun activities with the animals, including a long walk with a herd of goats. They all roamed together, stopping at trees, bushes and in fields of wildflowers to munch on anything they could. It was so much fun! I even got to hold a baby goat. It was very cute— Meet Goaty, one of the many goats I met on my goat walk. until it started chewing on my hair. Those goats brought me so much joy. To some people in other areas of the world, a simple goat can be a lifeline, providing families with milk, cheese and meat that they can eat or sell for money. Read this issue of Just for Kids to learn more about The Salvation Army’s Gifts of Hope program, which provides lifechanging gifts to people in other countries—including goats!

Did You Know?

Your friend, Abby

Goats are picky eaters and strong chewers. They have a thick upper lip that helps them sort through their food for the parts they want to eat. They are playful and social, living in groups called “herds.” Goats can sense emotion and enjoy spending time with people who are happy. Unlike humans, goats have rectangular pupils in their eyes, allowing them wider vision. But to look up and down, they have to move their necks!

More than 100 different species of animals are mentioned in the Bible. Can you find these ones?

What does this mean? The Salvation Army’s motto is “Giving Hope Today.” That means that when we see people in need, we help them however we can. The Bible tells us to “give freely,” meaning that we should be generous and share with others. This makes God happy because it shows His love.

ave you ever received a gift that changed your life? The Salvation Army’s Gifts of Hope program gives very special gifts to people around the world that can make a huge difference in their lives. One example of these gifts is a goat. Goats produce milk, cheese and meat. For families in countries such as Bangladesh, a goat can provide food and a source of money. They are also easy to care for and are a great addition to any small farm or garden because they can provide so much for a family. The Salvation Army provides many life-changing gifts, such as goats, chickens, bicycles, health care and more, to people around the world. This means that they can provide for their families, neighbours and communities. That’s why we call them Gifts of Hope!

here was once a king named David who loved God very much. He wanted to show his love and celebrate all the wonderful things God did for him. So, David danced and sang with joy in front of all the people. They shouted and blew trumpets as he danced. David didn’t care that he was the king; he danced like nobody was watching! As he danced and sang, some people didn’t understand. They thought he was acting silly. But David didn’t mind at all. esus was on His way to Jerusalem. As He was going into a village, 10 men met Him. They had a skin disease. They were standing close by and called out in a loud voice, “Jesus! Have pity on us!”

Jesus saw them and said, “Go. Show yourselves to the priests.” While they were on the way, they were healed. When one of them saw that he was healed, he came back. He praised God in a loud voice, threw himself at Jesus’ feet and thanked Him.

Jesus asked, “Weren’t all 10 healed? Where are the other nine? Didn’t anyone else return and give praise to God?” Then Jesus Hi kids! said to him, “Get up If you’ve read Just for Kids for a while, you will and go. Your faith know that I like learning about words and has healed you.” what they mean. I have a calendar that teaches me a big word every day of the year—that is 365 new words! This week I have a new word for you: gratitude. Gratitude means to be thankful and to show appreciation for something. If someone treats you with kindness, shares with you or helps you, you may feel gratitude toward them. Maybe you are grateful for people in your life who make you feel happy, safe and loved, such as your family, friends and God. There are plenty of things that I am grateful for, but at the top of my list is Jesus. In this issue of Just for Kids, you will read about a man who was thankful to Jesus for healing him.

Jesus’ Last Supper with the Disciples

Hi kids! If you could only have one meal, what would it be? I think mine would be sushi—there are so many different kinds and they’re all tasty. For dessert, I would choose cheesecake!

Before Jesus died on the cross, He ate a meal with His disciples. They didn’t have sushi, but the meal they ate was significant. Jesus wanted to reassure His disciples that even though He was going to die soon, His death would be important. He would die so that we can know God. At His special dinner, Jesus thanked God for the food they ate together. So, next time you say grace before a meal, choose one thing that you are grateful for and thank God for it.

esus and His disciples went to Jerusalem to celebrate the Festival of Passover. While they were eating the traditional meal together, Jesus took some bread and thanked God for it. He broke off some pieces, gave them to His disciples and said, “Take this bread and eat it. It is My body.” Then He took a cup of wine, thanked God for it, and gave it to them. He said, “Each one of you drink some of it. This wine is My blood, which will be poured out to forgive the sins of many and begin the new agreement from God to His people.” Jesus was telling His disciples that He would die soon. But He wanted them to know that He was choosing to die. He gave up His life so that we can be forgiven for our sins—the wrong things we do. Jesus died on a cross the next day. But He didn’t stay dead. Jesus rose again. Friends and Heroes Image © Friends & Heroes Ltd 2009. Used with permission.
